Dyachenko delivers for ‘Dolphins’
Thai Premier League Football 2012 Season
Pattaya United’s Sergey Dyachenko, left, fires
in his side’s winning goal against Esan United at the Tung Burapha Stadium
in Ubon Ratchathani, Sunday, Sept. 30. (Photo/Pattaya United)
Pattaya United rebounded from a disappointing 2-0 loss at
Insee Police FC last week to take down high-flying Esan United in Ubon
Ratchathani at the weekend.
The only goal of the match came in the 82nd minute when Pattaya’s Russian
midfielder Sergey Dyachenko struck with a beautiful curling shot from the
edge of the penalty area that flew in off the Esan goalkeeper’s left hand
post.
Pattaya had to withstand a virtual siege on their goal for the final 10
minutes of the match but they managed to hold out and take three very
valuable points from, what on paper at least, appeared to be the harder of
their two away fixtures last week.
With just 5 points now separating nine clubs in the mid-table standings it’s
still all to play for and United face another ‘six-pointer’ this weekend
when they take on TOT on Saturday at the Nongprue Stadium in Pattaya.
Kick-off is at 6 p.m.

Pattaya lawn bowlers
flying the flag for Thailand
![](pictures/s23-Lawn.jpg)
Thong Oomen and Orawan Sodok.
Thailand will be sending a men’s and a ladies team to the
World Lawn Bowls Championships in Adelaide, Australia which take place from
November 24th - December 9th. Both teams will consist of five bowlers, each
of whom will compete against the best bowlers in the world, in two of the
singles, pairs, trips or fours events. They will bowl at least 22 games and
more if they qualify for the semi-finals.
Both their men’s and ladies teams qualified as a result of their
performances over the last two years in international tournaments. As only
24 countries qualified for each it is quite a remarkable achievement,
especially bearing in mind that there are less than 60 Thai bowlers in the
whole of the country and only four locations where bowling takes place.
Included in the squad are two girls from Pattaya, Thong Oomen and Orawan
Sodok, both of whom bowl at the two facilities here, The Retreat and The
Coco Club and have regular opportunities to improve their skills by bowling
against the various ‘farangs’ from Europe and Australia who live here.

Gaussa doubles up for the week
PSC golf from Tropical Bert’s
The Scribe, right, presents the MBMG
Group Golfer
of the Month award to Joel Flor.
Derek Brook
Tuesday, September 25, Royal Lakeside -
Stableford
When you go to this golf course, just once in a while you
really have to go with Mashi Kaneta, it is a real experience. We all
know how the ‘Mashi Way’ to a golf course is usually exciting, and I
have learned short cuts over the years I never thought possible, but
this day was different. Somehow we turned off route 7, by mistake I
think, and ended on the entrance to the motorway to Bangkok. Somehow
he got us off it and we arrived at Royal Lakeside at the same time
as the rest, via back roads I could not find again if I tried.
On the way back we went through Chonburi and went shopping at a golf
shop the back of beyond and still arrived in plenty of time for me
to do the result show. And I got 40 winks, great stuff.
Tuesday’s A & B Flight winners, Mike
Gaussa and Andre Van Dyk,
with one of Bert’s finest.
We do not play Royal Lakeside very often, mainly
because of the distance, but at 50 minutes or so, lost or not, this
is now not a bad trip. Last month we booked it and were ‘Bumped’ at
the last minute and moved back to a very late start, so cancelled.
So the ‘Management’ gave us a good deal and we arrived with a full
field.
With the weather of late, rain and more rain, we had checked whether
the course was playable and were told it was if they had no more
rain, so it was with no surprise that we learned that carts were
allowed on the cart path only. This usually makes for a long day for
the ‘Goldies’.
So off we went and soon found why the carts were not allowed on the
course, it was soaking wet. Not only that but the ‘mozzies’ were out
and the good caddies had some insect repellent to help their
players. A quick wipe down with the repellent soon scared the damn
things away and only a few players got bitten. Just one of the joys
of a game of golf.
The day was tough with very wet fairways, soggy greens and a lot of
walking, but we got around. Really tiring these conditions and a few
of the ‘Goldies’ were absolutely shattered at the end. Thus a quick
‘kip’ in the car on the way back. A real refresher.
Back at Bert’s a little late it was soon time to declare the results
and the A Flight, 0 to 18, was outdone by the B Flight 19 upwards.
In the A Flight we had a three-way count back on 34 points that saw
Mike Gaussa win with Mark West in second and Dick Warberg in third.
The scores in the B Flight were a bit better with Andre Van Dyk
winning with 39 points ahead of a count back on 36 points that saw
Joel Flor in second and Tom Cotton in third.
With this being the last Tuesday of the month it was The MBMG Group
Golfer of the Month, and with Joel Flor coming second in the B
Flight he just beat Brian Parish on count back. Well played Joel!
Near Pins: Mike Gaussa, Tom Cotton, Daryl Evans, Graham
Buckingham.
Friday, Sept. 28, Rayong Country Club – Stableford
The plan was to go to Treasure Hill, but with all the
rain around we thought it sensible to contact them and see if the
course was playable. The information was that at 0800 hrs the rain
was heavy and the caddies had not turned up, so the course was
closed. So it was a phone around and we were told by Rayong Country
Club that the rain was light but no carts were allowed on the
course, so off we went.
As are all courses at present, this one was saturated and the
bunkers were water-logged, as were the greens, so it was a question
of getting around the best we could and trying to enjoy the day.
Indeed the Sun even broke through later on although it was very
weak.
The drive back was difficult as the roads were packed so we got back
to Bert’s a bit late. It was soon time for the weary group to hear
the results and find out that the steady player of the last few
months, Mike Gaussa, won with 39 points. Sunny Khamra was in second
with 35 points and we then had a count back on 34 points that saw
Max Matthews in third and Don Carmody in fourth. T.T.F.N.
Near Pins: Don Carmody, Alan Sullivan, Mick Coghlan.

Ebrahim wins Monthly Mug

Monday, Sept. 24,
Pleasant Valley – Stableford
Another excellent field of 20 golfers was signed up
for the trip to the picturesque Pleasant Valley golf course and under
overcast skies after very heavy rain overnight we assembled at The
Growling Swan.
It was good to welcome back Bob Akapita from Gove in
the Northern Territory of Australia; Neil Skilton returning from his 3
week trip to the UK; Walter Baechli after finishing his cycling tour of
Ireland & the UK; and Eddie Townsend, formerly from Perth but now
residing in Pattaya. It was sadly time to wish bon voyage to Stephen
Newton who is returning to work but at the time of writing is not sure
where!
Departing in 2 mini-vans right on time at 8.30 am we
proceeded up No.7 with many glances upwards at the weather but despite
the few pessimists amongst us we were confident of a fine day. After a
38 minute drive we were at the course which was very quiet and just had
to wait for one four-ball to tee off before we got our first group away
25 minutes ahead of schedule at 9.35 am.
Apparently the course had been under water the day
before so no carts were allowed on the fairways which meant winter rules
through the greens were in place. The course was indeed very wet in
parts but with relief, completely playable and looking in fine condition
although the greens did appear to be fairly slow on the front nine.
After completing our first nine in 2 hours we
encountered some very ordinary greens on the back nine which, according
to the knowledgeable amongst us was mainly due to the huge amount of
recent rain. We battled on however and finished the round in the very
good time of four hours and not a drop of rain was sighted on the day.
The ‘rain gods’ had smiled on us once again!
We were able to have 2 grades with four podium spots
in each. A Grade was for handicaps 0 to 17 and B Grade for 18 and over.
We had nearest the pins on all the par threes and longest first putts on
the 9th & 18th greens which
were collectively sponsored by The Growling Swan, Mike Gosden, Dave
Neal, Stephen Newton, Kevin Waycott & Bob Akapita. Many thanks to these
guys for their generosity!
The A Grade was won by yours truly with 37 points, 1
point ahead of Neil Skilton (17 point back nine) who beat Ebrahim (15
point back nine) into third place on a count back. Chris Stewart’s fine
74 gross (eagle on the par five 15th using four
iron, four iron to a metre) secured him 4th place
with 35 points.
The consistent Duangjai Tusagad (Kae) won the B Grade
with a fine 38 points and in a count back for second & third on 37
points Stephen Newton (21 point back nine) eased Walter Baechli (19
point back nine) into third spot with Roy Dayton fourth on 35 points.
A Flight (0-17)
1st Peter Blackburn (11) 37pts
2nd Neil Skilton (7) 36pts
3rd Ebrahim (16) 36pts
4th Chris Stewart (1) 35pts
B Flight (18+)
1st Duangjai Tusagad (34) 38pts
2nd Stephen Newton (28) 37pts
3rd Walter Baechli (18) 37pts
4th Roy Dayton (22) 35pts
Near Pins: 5th – Walter Baechli; 8th – Neil
Skilton; 13th – Bob Akapita; 17th – Chris Stewart
Long Putts: 9th – Ebrahim; 18th – Walter Baechli
The Compass Cap (awarded for the worst score on the
day) was won by Wendy Bernek and was naturally received in good spirit.
Deefa the Dog was back and whilst being paraded by his Master, Hunter,
several donations to charity were collected from the ever generous
Growling Swan Golf crew.
Thursday, Sept. 27, Crystal Bay A & B –
Stroke/Monthly Mug
Despite the pessimistic forecasts from the so called
Growling Swan meteorological “experts” the previous evening, I and most
others were confident of a fine day and a terrific field of 28 assembled
at the G.S. in readiness for the fourth Monthly Mug.
We were happy to welcome Neils Hansen & Jan Lovgreen
from Denmark who are both here for another seven months. Also Sandy
Leiper, who “disappeared” for a couple of weeks and Tom Cotton who is
recovering from a delicate surgical procedure. It was also good to see
Robbie Pollack from Sydney, Australia having a game with us for the
first time. It was sadly time to say farewell to Chris Stewart who will
shortly be returning to Mandurah, Western Australia & Bob Akapita who
has to return to his work in Gove in the Northern Territory of
Australia.
Everyone was on time so we headed off down Sukhumvit
in three mini vans right on schedule at 8.30 am and after a fairly good
run we arrived at Crystal Bay just 40 minutes later. The golf course had
received quite a lot of rain over the last few days so carts were not
allowed on the fairways which meant winter rules through the greens were
once more in place.
After waiting for a couple of groups coming through
from B nine we were able to get our first four-ball away on A nine 10
minutes ahead of our scheduled 10.00 am tee time. The weather was fine
but fairly hot & humid with very little wind with the exception of much
wind from The Growling Swan “delinquents” group who had recruited Max
“Two Corsets” Bracegirdle to lend “support” to Peter Grey in the absence
of Fred Dineley, who was not present due to family reasons.
The course was naturally wet in places but drying out
quickly although the greens were considerably slower than normal. We
proceeded at a very good pace and got through the A nine in right on two
hours and this pace was continued through the B nine enabling us to
complete the full round in four hours exactly, which for a stroke round
is very good for us. A very enjoyable round of golf with great company
in our group and of course the weather was fantastic once again.
In addition to the Monthly Mug winner we were able to
have 2 grades with five podium spots in each. A Grade was for handicaps
0 to 17 and B Grade for 18 and over. We had nearest the pins on all the
par threes and longest first putts on the 9th & 18th
greens which were collectively sponsored by The Growling Swan, Mike
Gosden, Dave Neal, Stephen Newton, Kevin Waycott & Bob Akapita. Many
thanks to all out sponsors!
![](pictures/s19-GS%20Golf-2.jpg)
Wendy Bernek, Kae & Peter Blackburn.
It was fantastic to see Ebrahim have his first win
with us and he took out the fourth Growling Swan Monthly Mug with a very
fine net 67. The winner of A Grade was the consistent John Pierrel who
had a very good net 68 with Mike “Hunter” Gosden in second spot with net
71. Playing on his home course Takeshi Hakozaki finished third with net
73 and in a count back for fourth & fifth your writer (net 35 back nine)
just pipped Niels Hansen (net 36 back nine) with both golfers having net
74.
In B Grade it was Alain “Inspector Clouseau” Tassei
who finished first with a very good net 69 and in another count back on
net 72 it was Dave Neal (net 36 back nine) who finished second from Tom
“T.C.” Cotton (net 38 back nine) in third place. Brad Todd’s net 73 was
good enough for him to secure fourth place with Roy Dayton fifth on net
74.

1st John Pierrel (11) net 68

Back at The Growling Swan for presentations we
thanked Peter Grey for sponsoring this very popular monthly event and
also for providing the delicious chicken supper which enabled Geoff
Phillips to go without a meal for the next two days.
The Compass Cap (awarded for the worst score on the
day) was won by Robbie Pollack who unfortunately left the Growling Swan
to go and pick up his lady but failed to return to collect the award.
Deefa the Dog was present of course and whilst being paraded by his
Master, Hunter several donations to charity were collected from the ever
generous Growling Swan Golf crew.
Many of us stayed back and as usual Peter Grey rang
the bell later in the evening, obviously delighted at not having to wear
the Compass Cap although it was revealed that “Two Corsets” may have had
something to do with this. Details are available “offline” to any
interested parties. Another great day with many laughs!
Note: Growling Swan Golf welcomes golfers of any
persuasion – low & high handicappers alike, female golfers and
beginners. We generally play Mondays & Thursdays, meeting at The
Growling Swan (formerly The Bunker Bar) in Soi Chaiyapoon at 8.00 am
with transport departing at 8.30 am. For bookings or more information
please contact Peter on 0806 351 386 or email to [email protected].

Jerry enjoys a ‘sweet’ day at Green Valley
Jomtien Golf with the IPGC
Monday, Sept. 24,
Green Valley – Stableford
It is remarkable for this time of the year that we
had a field of 41 players out today in three divisions with the equal
cuts at 5-15 in division 1, 16- 20 in division 2 and of course 21+ in
the third division.
Over the past six years that we have been playing
here as Jomtien Golf there have been some remarkable scores returned,
with scores of 45, 44 and slightly lower this has been the norm here,
and now playing off 17 the South African boy Jerry Sweetnam won today in
Division 2 with 44 points. Bryan Rought took second on place 36 and Paul
Hartley was third one point behind.
Wilf Latham topped Division 1 with 37 points after
beating Kari Kuparinen on a 20/18 back nine count back and Chris Voller,
still playing off 8, was third with 35 points.
Ian Plummer, not shopping today with his wife Anne,
won Division 3 with 37 points ahead of Bryan Priestley in second three
points behind and in third place with 33 points was the China based
Bristol boy, Bob Poole.
Near pins went to Jeff Codeiro, Grenville Hill, Ian
Spiers (2), Andy Crabb, Ian Hart, Rod Howett and Bryan Priestley.
In the 2’s there was a rollover to Bangpra next
Monday in division 1 and Ian Hart and Rod Howett birdied the 12th to
split the pot in division 2.
Wednesday, Sept. 26,
Eastern Star – Stableford
It was very dark in the distance as we drove down
towards the coast and with heavy rain yet again here in Jomtien
overnight we wondered if we would be playing today.
It was our second Wednesday trip here in two weeks
due to a management competition here at Eastern Star on Friday, which is
our normal competition day, and we still had two divisions out with the
cut at 8-14 and 16 plus in division 2.
In Division 1 there were four scores returned with 35
points and a back nine count back of 21/19/18/15 saw Marty Rock in first
place ahead of Wilf Latham, Mikael Andersson and Iain Usher finishing in
that order.
Joe Kubon won Division 2 with 34 points while Paul
Hartley took second after beating Harry Vincenzi on a 17/16 back nine
count back, both coming in with 33 points.
Near pins went to Arthur Hancock (2), Tony Kay, Jon
Lay, Mark Armstrong and Joe Kubon.
In the ‘2’s today, Tony Kay birdied the 6th as well
as Wilf Latham and Jon Lay the 3rd to share the Division 1 prize and
Mark Armstrong birdied the tough 13th over the
water to split the rollover pot with Joe Kubon after the latter sank a
three-foot putt on the 17th.
Friday, Sept. 28, The
Emerald – Match-play and Stableford
Our annual challenge, a match-play game over two
rounds against the Ban Chang based Backyard Boys at Emerald was
cancelled fifteen minutes before our first tee-off time due to
horrendous rain overnight here and heavy showers all the way down to the
course this morning.
We had 12 players in each team and another 16 in an
individual stableford competition today, so this is now postponed until
next Friday where the first round will commence at Eastern Star, our
venue. The following Friday we will be back for the second round here at
the Emerald.
As a final note, we have received some positive
updates coming in regarding Fred Duffy’s health back in Scotland and we
will keep you all posted.

Oddur signs off in style
PSC golf from Café Kronborg
Monday, Sept. 24, Century
Chonburi – Stableford
1st Mike Allidi (2) 36pts
2nd Takeshi Hakozaki (11) 36pts
3rd Oddur Olafsson (12) 35pts
4th
Mike Winfield (20) 32pts
It was Century Chonburi today, up the 331 in less than an
hour with heavy traffic, and off the first tee 15 minutes early with cloudy
and humid conditions on the front nine, sunny and hot coming in.
The greens were fine but the course was a bit scruffy
with a lot of grass not being cut in the last week. Back in the building
that claims to be a clubhouse after a round of 4 hours and 30 minutes we
welcomed Elias Magnusson, back from the summer in Iceland, and said goodbye
to Daryl Evans back to Australia for a bit.
Mike Allidi was the winner on a count back from Takeshi
Hakozaki in second, both on 36 points. Oddur Olafsson took third on 35
points and Mike Winfield was fourth with 32.
Thursday, Sept. 27,
Bangpakong – Stableford
1st Oddur Olafsson (12) 40pts
2nd Doug Maiko (16) 39pts
3rd Sunny Khanna (13) 38pts
4th
Dave Richardson (26) 38pts
It was Bangpakong Riverside today, up the route 7 for 1
hour and 7 minutes and we were off the first tee 15 minutes early under
cloudy and humid conditions. The course on the day was very wet but as
always immaculate with some of the best greens around, a real treat to play.
After playing a few holes we discovered a multitude of
5-balls in front for a long round of 5 hours and 20 minutes.
Back in the clubhouse, welcomes went out to Sunny Khanna
and John Haddon and a goodbye to Oddur Olafsson back to fishing off Iceland.
Oddur made sure he signed off in style by winning today
with 40 points. Doug Maiko took second with 39 points, while Sunny Khanna
was third on a count back from Dave Richardson and Elis Magnusson, all on 38
points.

Ryder Cup fever hits TGC
PSC golf from The Golf Club
![](pictures/s15-Golf.jpg)
The Ryder Cup crew at 3:00
a.m. on Sunday night.
Steve Ellison
It was a weekend of late nights as we watched the
European team stage one of the greatest comebacks in history to win the 2012
Ryder Cup over the American team. Congratulations to the entire side, as
Europe seemed to do the impossible and rack up win upon win to colour the
scoreboard a brilliant blue. Thanks to all who joined us for a fascinating
and breathtaking tournament.
Monday, Oct. 24, Green
Valley (White tees) – Stableford
1st Mike Newbert (14) 38pts
T2nd Mick Beresford (16) 36pts
T2nd
John Pierrel (11) 36pts
Rain, rain go away was the lament for many of our golfers
this morning, and many did not bother to turn up. As with the previous week,
once we got out to the course, everything was fine. Never let the weather
dictate your game or use it as an excuse for laziness. The gang had a great
day of golf with no rain and relatively dry conditions.
Mike Newbert (the Montauk Mauler) took it all in stride
as he destroyed the field and turned up in the clubhouse with 38 points on
the card. Micky B. had the same result as the week before and took 2nd
with 36 points once again. Our travelling golfer John Pierrel rounded out
the top 3 with a tie with Mick on 36 and all was good at Green Valley. The
course remains as one of the best in town and is in tip top shape.
Tuesday, Oct. 25, Old
Course (White/Blue tees) – Stableford
1st Paul McNally (2) 37pts
2nd Simon Philbrook (7) 37pts
3rd
Ernie McInerney (11) 36pts
Membership has its privileges. It was a complete podium
sweep for 3 of the members of Siam Old this week as the visitors were left
in the proverbial cold. It must have been the members bounce on a few holes
as the lads took no prisoners on this final outing for the season to the
best course in Pattaya on the last Sports Day of 2012.
Paul (Spike) McNally said it was all in the cleats for
his gripping round. I would imagine that when one plays off a 2 handicap,
the game is far more enjoyable anyway! Congrats Paul, you are the Champ! Or
at least one of them.
Our pal Simon Philbrook from the MBMG Group was also
basking in the sunshine as he shared the limelight with Paul in a tie at 37
Stableford points. Ernie Mac finally shot to his potential and finished a
shot back on 36. It must be those restful nights up on Pratumnak Hill doing
him a world of good.
Friday, Oct. 28, Crystal
Bay (White tees) - Monthly Medal
1st Suresh Mehta (16) net 67
2nd
Phil Smedley (13) net 68
My how time flies, and yet another Monthly Medal was on
the cards, this time at the lovely Crystal Bay. There are 3 nine-hole tracks
here and all are very, very good. It was in great shape and once again,
there was no rain.
As we left Pattaya with a few souls who knew about
weather conditions, the skies cleared and a fine day of nice cool golf was
in store for us. Yes, it was a non-stop drizzle at The Golf Club but the
course is about 35 miles down the road so anything can happen. As I keep
harping on, we rarely get rained out here in Pattaya.
Suresh Mehta is currently visiting from India and is a
mate of our pal Chaten Patel. On a whim, he thought he might get out for a
round while here, and loh and behold he walks away with his first Monthly
Medal shirt for his efforts!
El Capitano, Senor Phil Smedley was just a shot behind
and missed out by a hair with his great score of a net 68 for second place.
Thanks guys, another great month of golf in Pattaya goes into the record
books.
Note: The Golf Club is located on Soi LK Metro. We

Damp courses but
no lack of endeavour
PSC Golf from Mulligans Lakeside
Tuesday, Sept. 25, Khao Kheow -
Stableford
Khao Kheow A & C was the allocated combination for Tuesday and
with no carts on the fairway, we followed PSC guidelines and implemented
‘lift, clean & place’. The course was fairly wet and casual water drops to
go with the pick and place ruling were pretty much the order of the day.
Dave
Edwards.
Jeff Wylie (5) coped best with the conditions to lead the way with a meagre
31 points, followed in by Iain Painter (20) with 27. Co-incidentally the
same prize winning scores as the Tuesday before at Treasure Hill.
Near pins were shared between Chris & Dave.
Thursday, Sept. 27, Pleasant Valley - Stableford
Thursday was a visit to Pleasant Valley, where the course was
much drier than Tuesday’s venue, but still no carts off the path, so ‘lift,
clean & place’ was implemented once again. The fairways were in good
condition today, with very few casual water drops required, but the course
decision re carts was best as there were several areas which would have been
chopped up badly by carts.
Scores were reflective of the better conditions, but again it was Jeff (5)
showing how it’s done with 40 points, followed in by Dave Edwards (17) with
36 points.
Near pins were picked up by Jeff (2), Dave & Willem.
Note: Mulligans Lakeside plays golf generally on Tuesday & Thursday,
with ML hosting prompt presentations on both days. As a PSC affiliated venue
we welcome senior golfers who have opted for the “Silver” tee option. Call
089 094 1841 for scheduling or enquiries. Hope to see you there, cheers &
good golfing!

Bangpra reigns after the rain
IPGC Pattaya Golf Society at Rabbi’s Elephant Bar
A pause in the heaviest storm period the monsoon season
has dumped on Pattaya so far this year saw the Pattaya Golf Society fulfill
their medal fixture at Bangpra on Monday, 24th September under surprisingly
clear skies. The course looked as immaculate as ever but the first steps on
the fairway saw feet settling in the soft surface, though not enough to give
relief from casual water. With very little run nothing but the best
connections saw success and as a result the course held all the aces.
Manfully the group stuck to its task and Neil McIntosh
held on to post a return of net 81 for second place, just edging out Wichai
Tananusorn by two shots. The winner, as so often recently, was Dave Edwards
with net 79.
There were no birdie ‘2’s and Rabbi’s free beer draw was
won by Norwegian Gubbi Innvaer whilst Bryan Barrell savoured the Booby Bevy
yet again for his high scoring round.
One couldn’t blame the field for hoping for better
weather next time at Bangpra but October can be pretty grim as well on the
Eastern Seaboard golf courses.
Hats off to Larry
On Wednesday, 26th September, the Pattaya Golf Society
visited Eastern Star to play a stableford competition as its charity event
for the month. In the main the day stayed fine and the course was reasonably
turned out but with little run, in common with so many other venues
currently.
Returning after ten days from a back spasm and the
resultant sciatica an anaesthetized Mr Len showed his relief at being out
with the lads again as he returned 31 points for a share of second place
with Seil Revels. The winner was Larry Ang, paying only a fleeting visit and
his 35 points was an excellent effort on a day when the lower handicappers
suffered. None more so than Dave Edwards. In one brief rain spell he
relocated his clubs inside the cab of his golf cart and they slipped,
accelerating the vehicle into the cart in front. Ouch! An expensive mistake
which was later supplemented with the Booby Bevy.
Rabbi’s free beer draw was won by Norwegian visitor Khun
Bento. However the real winners on the day were the kids at the Fr Ray
Foundation Outreach Center on Soi Thepprasit when once again the generosity
of the group saw over 4K raised.
Treasure for Tananusorn
The Pattaya Golf Society ended a tough golfing week with
a visit to Treasure Hill on Friday, 28th September. The course was in fine
condition and the day stayed dry but the special challenge of the course is
always present and scores reflected this.
Sharing third place were Dave Edwards and Bent Saeverud
on 29 points, one behind runner up Andrew Purdie, playing the course for the
first time. The winner was Wichai Tananusorn with 33 points and it is always
good to see a very capable golfer make a good fist of the round at the
testing course.
Again there were no birdie ‘2’s and the Booby Bevy was
reserved for Ken Grimes for his low score of the day. The round was
splendidly marshalled by Dave Edwards in the absence of the sciatic golf
geezer. Better times lie ahead no doubt.

Mark’s maths adds up
PSC golf with Lewiinski’s Golf Society
![](pictures/s12-Lewiinski.jpg)
Sunday’s winners Lou
Szigligeti, center, and Mark Wood, right, with golf manager Colin Davis.
Sunday, Sept. 16, Green Valley – Stableford
A Flight
1st Mark Wood (10) 37pts
2nd Tony Huxtable (8) 37pts
B Flight
1st Lou Szigligeti (18) 37pts
2nd Barry Copestake (16) 36pts
Near Pins: No 4 Jim Brackett No 9 Barry Copestake
No 9 Claude Harder No 16 Peter Henshaw
The man of the match was none other than everybody’s
nice guy Mark “Brenton” Wood who out raced a host of 37 points with his
award winning and A Flight count back victory over Tony Huxtable and
Mike Williamson. The esteemed gentleman Tony edged Mike for the silver,
therefore Mike’s trip to the podium was for exercise only.
In B Flight it was a case of who was playing his last
round of his holiday. Aussie Lou ‘the thunder from down under’
Szigligeti did as so many before him have done on getaway day, by
equaling Marks A Flight 37 points Lou to finish one stroke clear of
Gentleman Barry ‘the boot’ Copestake.
What happened to Friday’s PSC B Flight winner Mickey
‘nine holes’ Beresford? Welcome back to the real world Mick.
Mark Wood and Barry Copestake added a 2 to their
flight wins along with Nigel Black, Pat Reagan, John Baxter and Claude
Harder.
Tuesday, Sept. 25, Greenwood B+C - Stableford
1st Nigel Black (8) 37pts
2nd Jim Bell (17) 35pts
2rd JP Maffray (11) 34pts
![](pictures/s13-Lewiinski-1.jpg)
The Baan Jing Jai kids enjoy
a day at the pool courtesy of Lewiinski’s golfers.
Greenwood can play as tough as any course around and
that was certainly in evidence as only one player bettered his handicap.
Nigel Black topped out the field with a fine 37 points, closely followed
by Aussie Jim ‘no’ Bell on 35 points. JJ Maffray closed the flight a
further shot back.
No 2’s so a rollover to Wednesday.
Wednesday, Sept. 19, Burapha B+D - Stableford
1st Billy Briton (17) 44pts
2nd Paul Hack (13) 40pts
3rd Nigel Black (8) 39pts
It was off to Burapha to play the British links and
Dunes layouts for the lads and lasses for the always intriguing “what
time is our real starting time?” regatta. Irelands’ Billy Briton must
have gotten it right as he led the boy’s home with a stunning 44 points
for man of the match and a visit to the handicap sectary.
Paul Hack with a rock solid 40 points must have
thought he had done enough for a win and most days he would have - but
today he just picked the wrong day. Nigel Black tided up the flight with
a very respectable 39 points. Amazingly over half the field posted par
or better.
The Irish cleaned up the 2’s as Christy Knight and
good friend Peter Henshaw split the rollover pot.
Jing Jai swimming pool day
With Friday’s scheduled game at Crystal Bay cancelled
due to the weather, Lewiinski’s decided to empty the Jing Jai orphanage
donation box and treat the kids to a day at the swimming pool. The
donation box receives any unclaimed prizes after a short period, and
this coupled with the Lewiinski’s retirees and Alzheimer’s it does not
take long to fill the box.
Again the day was very wet and downcast but this did
not dampen the kid’s spirits as they had a great time, and they even got
to try the famous Lewiinski’s buffet. At the end of the day they went
home really happy. A big thanks to all concerned, especially to the
Lewiinski’s staff and the golfers.
Note: Lewiinski’s is situated on Pattaya Land Soi
1, Beach Road Soi 13/3 near to Walking Street. Anyone wishing to play
with us just pop in and add your name to the list or call Colin on 089
826 0764. Transport is provided.

Gill and Taylor take the medals
IPGC golf from The Haven
Monday, Sept. 24, Bangpra
- Stableford
CSS 75 NC
1st Alwyne Burley (18) 33pts
2nd Shuichi Kodaka (16) 32pts
3rd
Terry Hodgkiss (23) 26pts
With the recent heavy rain making all the surrounding
courses extremely wet and with many potential golfers staying under the
covers after a quick look out of the window, both the quantity and quality
of the week’s golf played from Soi 13 have been badly affected and another
very difficult week of golf started out at the always difficult Bangpra,
where the group had played two weeks earlier.
![](pictures/s11-Haven-1.jpg)
Paul Taylor.
Once again, even with two groups from the IPGC playing
the same course, none of the competitors from either competition played
within two of their handicaps thus ensuring that the day became non-counting
for upward review of handicaps. But the failure of the contenders to meet
the standard required could not be laid at the door of the course which was
as usual in top condition, apart from the effect that the rain had on the
amount of run available. As usual the greens were fast and true although the
rain had slowed them to just less than lightning fast.
Alwyne Burley made the best of the conditions and almost
made the standard but a couple of blobs and a few one pointers slowed his
progress on the way to the top step of the podium. Shuichi Kodaka, making
his last appearance prior to returning to Japan for a short time to recharge
the batteries, almost made it to the top but he also slipped in a couple of
blobs on the back nine and had to settle for second place, with Terry
Hodgkiss filling put the last place on the winners list a fair way back.
In line with the level of difficulty that the course was
playing it was no surprise to find that there were no 2’s in either
division.
Back at The Haven there was a farewell drink for Shuichi
Kodaka following the prize presentations.
Wednesday, Sept. 26,
Pattana B & C - Stableford
CSS75 NC
1st Phillip Cass (20) 31pts
2nd Terry Hodgkiss (23) 28pts
3rd Trevor Schirmer (17) 27pts
![](pictures/s11-Haven-2.jpg)
Alwyne Burley.
With the A course still under renovation it was once
again the B & C courses to be negotiated. Once the day’s tournament had
started it was immediately apparent that it should have been played off the
yellow tees instead of the longer whites, as the course offered zero run and
played every yard of its measured 6,700 yards and so for the second time in
the week the day became non-counting for upward review of handicaps.
Phillip Cass was playing off his new handicap which had
been reduced by two shots after carding a two under handicap round on a day
when the CSS went up three shots. Today he crawled to the top of the pile
with a return that was a lot better than the bare bones of 31 points, as it
was good enough by a clear three strokes to finish ahead of next best Terry
Hodgkiss and also contained seven three point holes but also unfortunately
too many blanks; whereas Terry had as many blanks but fewer 3 pointers.
Trevor Schirmer played for the first time in a while, but
is still very tentative about his knee problem so is not able to give it a
real go as yet and will probably have to await his return to full fitness
before he can challenge for the top again, but did well enough in the
conditions to see off a few lower handicappers on the day and take third
place.
Once again there were no 2’s in either division.
Before the prize presentations there was a welcome for
new member Ross Schiffke from Queensland.
Friday, Sept. 14, Phoenix
– Monthly Medals
Division 1 (Blue)
CSS 74
1st Paul Gill (14) net 75
2nd Seil Revels (6) net 76
Division 2 (White)
CSS 72
1st Paul Taylor (19) net 75
2nd
Paul Hartley (16) net 76
Following a night when it had rained continuously, at
least in Pattaya, and continued right up to and past the leaving hour of
9a.m., by which point several players had decided that a dry day on the
outside and possibly a wet one inside was the way to go, there were still a
few hardy souls that were vying for the chance to appear in the Gold and
Silver finals to be held in December after winning a Monthly Medal out of
The Haven.
![](pictures/s11-Haven-3.jpg)
Phillip Cass.
They were well rewarded as almost as soon as they had
left for the course the skies cleared and a very pleasant day was in store
without a single drop of rain appearing and playing over the well drained
and manicured Mountain and Lake courses.
Paul Taylor is obviously trying to take out all the
opposition in the second division for the end of year play-offs, as he
claimed his third consecutive medal with a commendable three over handicap
on a course that was playing long even though it was in terrific condition
considering the amount of water that it had absorbed, but at least the rain
had helped to slow the greens down for the higher handicappers.
Paul Hartley almost took his second medal of the year but
a six, six finish ended his chances even as his playing partner Paul Taylor
took a treble on the last to make it extremely close at the finish.
The first division was also a closely contested affair
with new member Paul Gill just getting the top spot with a one over CSS
return over the longer blue tee course which was playing every yard of its
measured 6,700 yards and Seil Revels nearly getting up to win after covering
the back nine in two over gross.
There were no 2’s in the first division but Paul Taylor
added to his haul fir the day with the only one in the second division
sweeping the pool which included a few roll overs.
Prior to the presentations there were welcomes for Paul
Gill and Dave Brannigan together with a farewell for Terry Hodgkiss who is
returning to Oz for a couple of months break.
Note. If you would like to play with The Haven
group, you can contact mobile 082 219 0965 or call in to The Haven Hotel, at
185 Soi 13, between Beach Road and 2nd Road. All
transportation to the course is arranged and you do not need to sign up
prior to the day, but you should be there by 8.30 on Monday, Wednesday, and
Friday on the days you wish to play. A schedule of courses to be played can
be found on our web site at www.thehaven-hotel.com.

Ovens above – Spot takes monthly honours
PSC golf from The Blue Moose Sports Bar
![](pictures/s10-Moose.jpg)
Paul “Spot” Ovens, left, with
Bill Thompson.
Monday, Sept. 24, Pattaya
C.C. - Stableford
A somewhat low turnout for Monday golf as the NFL season
has started and most regulars stay away to watch Sunday Night Football.
Winning was Dale Murphy with a score of 35 points as he continues to work on
bringing his handicap down. Bruce beat out Arnold for second on count back
of their scores of 33.
Larry, who normally is in the running tore up his card.
We did get his score out of him of 25 points. Larry is a regular golfer at
the Moose but this was his last round of golf for a while as he will be
going back to work for 6 months in northern Alberta, Canada. We wish him the
best with the 40 degree below zero weather in the winter!
Wednesday, Sept. 26,
Burapha – Stableford
We played Burapha B & D course for the Blue Moose monthly
trophy, and the course was in surprisingly good shape considering all of the
rain we have had.
We moved fairly quickly until we made the D course where
a 5-ball had teed off. It was slower, but not as slow as we expected. We
finished the round in 3 hours 30 minutes.
For the second monthly in a row the head Moose (Bill
Thompson) came in second. Not only that, but an Australian has won two
months in a row. Billy was looking at a par putt of 6 feet and confident he
would make it to win on the monster 478 yard par 4 finishing hole. While
talking the line over with his caddy, Spot (Paul) Ovens chipped in for a
birdie from off the green. Billy did make his putt for 37 points one short
of Spot’s 38. Gerd Seidel came in third with 31 points.
Back at the Blue Moose, Herbie Ishinaga provided an experiment with a
chicken and coleslaw sub - it was very good.

Melia makes successful return
PSC golf Bunker Boys @ The Ranch
Monday, Sept. 24,
Green Valley – Medal
A slight delay as tee’d off behind two other
local societies, and a longer round than we’ve become accustomed to
recently, but still a pleasant day. The course was in good shape and
although we elected to play ‘pick, clean and place’, following
overnight rain, it really wasn’t necessary.
![](pictures/s9-Bunker.jpg)
Gordon Melia - three
second places in his first three games back.
Alan Freeman was the only golfer to play to his
(dodgy?) handicap and took the top podium position by two clear
shots. We welcomed back Gordon Melia for the start of his annual
visit, and he’s obviously been practicing back in the U.K. as he
took second place on a count back ahead of Geoff Parker, who after a
steady round suffered a disaster on the par 3 sixteenth hole when
his ball plugged in an impossible lie in the bunker, resulting in a
triple bogey.
1 st
Alan Freeman (3) net 72
2nd Gordon Melia (17)
net 74
3rd Geoff Parker (14)
net 74
Near Pins: Colin Greig and Alan Freeman (2).
Wednesday, Sept. 26, The Emerald - Stableford
We arrived at Emerald to find the car park almost
deserted and the course eerily quiet - and it didn’t take long to
find out why. We last visited Emerald four weeks ago and the
approaches to all the greens at that time had suffered severe water
damage. Unfortunately things haven’t improved, and in fact have even
deteriorated, with the ground staff attempting to re-turf the
approaches with some very dodgy turf.
This popular course is now in the worst condition
in recent memory, and there seems little chance that it can improve
in the near future, so we’ll reluctantly have to take it off the
schedule for a month or two.
Predictably, the round progressed quickly and the
first four-ball were back in the clubhouse in well under 4 hours,
leaving ample time for refreshments in nearby Bang Chang.
New boy Al Collinge managed to cope with the
difficult conditions better than most and was the only golfer to
better his handicap on the day to take the winner’s prize, also
collecting the additional bonus of the second KPK food voucher.
Gordon Melia came in second place for the second game in succession
ahead of Alan Freeman.
1 st
Al Collinge (15) 37pts
2nd Gordon Melia (17)
36pts
3rd Alan Freeman (3)
35pts
Near Pins: Alan Freeman, Lee Butler, Gordon Melia and Tony
Robbins.
Friday, Sept. 28, Treasure Hill – Stableford
Prospects for the game looked bleak as we had
breakfast at The Ranch, with continuous, drizzling rain outside, but
a smaller group than normal decided to take the chance and set off
to Treasure Hill. The rain continued all the way up the 331, but
miraculously stopped as we arrived at the course, and we tee’d off
without delay under cool overcast skies.
The weather improved as the round progressed and
by the end we were playing in bright sunny conditions - such is the
unpredictability of the weather in Amazing Thailand.
The course was damp but in good shape, but there
are continuous improvements taking place and today the surrounds of
several greens were being re-turfed, but unlike at Emerald there was
no major problem. One has to wonder just how good this course is
going to be in the future when all the works are eventually
completed.
Paul Smith rediscovered his scoring touch to win
the honours on the day, beating Gordon Melia on a count back. No
doubt Gordon will be suffering nightmares over the weekend after
managing to miss an 8 inch putt!
1 st
Paul Smith (1) 35pts
2nd Gordon Melia (17)
35pts
3rd Dave Ashman (14)
34pts
Near Pins: Dave Ashman, Geoff Parker, Gordon Melia and Paul
Smith.
Gerry Cooney won the September Golfer of the
Month trophy for the second month running, even though he was absent
for the final three games following his departure to the U.K. for
further medical treatment on his shoulder – how good is he going to
be when he gets that sorted out? I guess we’ll find out when he
returns in November.
Note: The Bunker Boys are a PSC affiliated golf
society who now play out of The Ranch bar on Pattaya 3 rd
Road (in front of the fire station, and almost opposite the Buffalo
Bar). We play three times per week on Mondays, Wednesdays, and
Fridays, so if you enjoy a fun day out, and a friendly but
competitive golf competition why not come and join us.
We meet at The Ranch at 9 a.m. for breakfast and
transportation, and new players are always welcome. Contact Buff on
086 046 5091 or 080 605 5663 for all enquiries. You can find all the
news, schedules and results on our website at

Coller shoots lifetime best at Plantation
PSC golf from The Outback Golf Bar
![](pictures/s8-Outback.jpg)
(Left-right) Paul Greenaway,
Sel Wegner, Tim Knight & JinJo O’Neill.
Monday, Sept. 24, Burapha
- Stableford
Thirty-two players on the B & D nines here today on an
otherwise quiet course, which led once again to an early start; the General
was the organiser for the day and set the field off on the white tees. There
had been a couple of cancellations due to the recent heavy rains but apart
from inconvenience of the expected ‘cart path only’ ruling, the course was
eminently playable.
Two course specialists topped the A & B divisions, Jim
Brackett winning the top Div with 38pts and John O’Keefe going one better to
take Div B with 39; interestingly enough they also got the only ‘2’s; on the
3rd hole for John and the 17th for Jim.
Aussie visitor, Rick Speyer won Div C with 34pts ahead of
one his playing partners, Terry Ellis also on 34 and newcomer Brett, playing
with hired clubs, took third with 32. Welcome not only to the rest of the
Aussie boys; Kerry Beck, whose card was never found, Steve (brother of
Terry) and Bart Hantke but also to Englishman, Ron Dickie (snr).
Div A (0–13)
1st Jim Brackett (5) 38pts
2nd Ron Dickie (7) 35pts
3rd Tom Fitzpatrick (12) 34pts
Div B (14–19)
1st John O’Keefe (17) 39pts
2nd Clinton Kimber (14) 36pts
3rd Tony Schuett (17) 33pts
Div C (20+)
1st Rick Speyer (20) 34pts
2nd Terry Ellis (23) 34pts
3rd Brett Padroth (20) 32pts
Monday, Sept. 24, Khao Kheow – Stableford
The weather contributed to a couple of cancellations and
is part of the reason that Khao Kheow remains out of favour for many. Sadly
therefore, there was only 6 people playing but we still had fun.
We played A & C off the whites due to all the rain we
have had and there being no roll but the course was generally reasonably
dry, even though carts were not allowed on the course.
Course A has improved dramatically but Course C let us
down as it was pretty shabby in parts and the greens had been cored and were
a lot slower that A; but that didn’t stop Muzza (Murry Hart) from shooting a
fantastic 40 points (this boy is on fire at the moment).
Suzi got the only ‘2’ on hole 5.
1st Murray Hart (13) 40pts
2nd Dennis Pelly (10) 38pts
3rd Sugar Ray Handford (17) 35pts
Tuesday, Sept. 25, Pattaya C.C. – Stableford
On a damp Tuesday morning there were 15 Outbackers who
made their way to the local Pattaya Country Club for the usual 2x 9
competition.
Whilst the course was wet following recent rain it was in
fairly good condition other than some fairways had not been cut as the
ground was too soft to allow heavy equipment. In particular the bunkers and
greens were in great shape; but with carts on paths only, meant pick and
place was in operation.
There was a warm welcome to Ian Covill returning to
Pattaya following medical treatment in the UK – he was of course with Noy
who we have not seen for a while. Muzza aka Murray Hart was getting another
game in after his success at Khao Kheow on Monday, before leaving for work
later this week.
With 15 players it was one flight – plus ‘2’s. White tees
followed by the blues on the back for the men and correspondingly the red
and white for the ladies. Two PCC members took first and second with Nigel
Cannon (22) taking top spot with 36 points and Geoff Moody (26) with 33;
with in third place was the inform Martin O’Neil (28) on 32 points.
Tuesday organiser Chad - aka Barry Chadbourn had the only
‘2’ on the fifth, chipping in from off the green!
The Outback plays at PCC every Tuesday at 09.00. However
on Thursday 1st November we shall be there for an extra day to enjoy the
opening of the refurbished back 9 making a fine 18 holes.
1st Nigel Cannon (22) 36pts
2nd Geoff Moodie (26) 33pts
3rd Martin O’Neill (28) 32pts
Tuesday, Sept. 25, Laem Chabang – Stableford
A resurgent Laem Chabang followed last week’s five
groups, with another three (12 PAX) today, where Kerry Beck, who NR’d
yesterday at Burapha, shot to the top of the leaderboard with a fine 38pts,
playing off the white tee. Bill Hornick, having his first game back in
Thailand for some time, matched his score, only to be beaten on count back
and that man again, John O’Keefe, who is really going through a purple patch
at the moment, following his win on Monday, took third with 36.
There were three ‘2’s; two from Bill Hornick (B5 & B8)
and John O’Keefe (B5).
1st Kerry Beck (8) 38pts
2nd Bill Hornick (12) 38pts
3rd John O’Keefe (16) 36pts
Wednesday, Sept. 26, Siam Plantation – Stableford
A full house of 20 Outbackers turned out for Plantation
today to play B & A and a big thank-you to General Jack for starting us off
and organising today’s competition even though he didn’t play. We had our
regular slot at 8:36 and we teed off just ahead of time.
What can you say about Plantation, fantastic course and
the greens were fast compared to last Friday where a lot of Outbackers
played in the Pattaya Sports Club Monthly Tournament.
Steve Reece shot his best round of his holiday, scoring
39pts to win from the ever-so consistent, Phil Williams, who has been
catching the handicapper’s eye of late, with 36; and Ron Dickie taking third
on countback with 34.
Div B went to Dave Coller, who was enjoying only his
third round with the Outback; Dave, whose previous rounds have shown no form
at all, came out and played the best round of his life with a very fine
42pts and got the only ‘2’ on B7. Tony McDonough was second with 38 and late
entry Suzi, who switched to here from Treasure Hill, to balance the numbers,
squeezed into third place on 31.
Note: It is now confirmed the Outback have secured a very
special deal to play Siam Plantation every week throughout the high season,
usually we hope on a Wednesday at around 8.40am. The booking will be for a
maximum of five groups on a first come first served basis, please contact
Jack for further information.
Div A (0-14)
1st Steve Reece (13) 39pts
2nd Phil Williams (11) 36pts
3rd Ron Dickie (7) 34pts
Div B (15+)
1st David Coller (26) 42pts
2nd Tony McDonough (15) 38pts
3rd Suzi Lawton (17) 31pts
Wednesday, Sept. 26, Treasure Hill – Stableford
With 20 players at Siam Plantation another 12 Outbackers
travelled up the 331 to Treasure Hill, starting 30 minutes early and having
the course to themselves. From the last time we played in May, the course
has greatly improved in condition and should soon be top notch again and a
good alternative course to play in the High Season.
Don Lehmer showed some early form ahead of the upcoming
Chiang Rai/Mai trip to win the day with 35pts on count back from the
Sugarman, also with 35. Muzza, who was having his third start in as many
days, had a shocker, managing a score of only19pts, one of his worst ever!
There were no ‘2’s
1st Don Lehmer (21) 35pts
2nd Sugar Ray Handford (17) 35pts
3rd Chaten Patel (11) 33pts
Friday, Sept. 28, Green Valley – Stableford
Waking up in Pattaya on Friday morning, anybody would
have thought that the golf would be cancelled, after raining the entire
night and still raining hard in the morning. Whilst compiling the start
sheet of over 50 players for the monthly medal, I kind of felt this was
going to be a complete waste of time; sure enough the phone-calls and text
messages started arriving but surprisingly only about 10 players withdrew
and upon arrival at the course, the heavy rain had stopped and the course
was looking pretty good. So I hastily re-jigged the start sheet as players
turned up and postponed the medal until next Friday; ending up with 42
players in four divisions playing stableford.
The winners of each division were Paul Greenaway (Div A)
with 38pts, Barry Copestake (Div B) ptswith 39pts, Tim Knight (Div C) with
40pts and JinJo O’Neill (Div D) with 36pts.
There were four ‘2’s from Paul Bourke (4th),
Dennis Pelly & Barry Copestake (12th) and Tim Knight
(16th).
