Ebrahim & Sandy too good at the Mountain
PSC Golf from The Growling Swan
Sandy Leiper, Shane Young &
Ebrahim.
Peter Blackburn
Monday, March 11, Mountain Shadow - Stableford
Even with three non-regular people not bothering to show up, we
still had a full field of 32 ready to play the challenging Mountain Shadow
Golf Course for the second time in a couple of weeks.
It was good to see veteran Ted Morris playing with us again and also
newcomers Harry Vincenzi from USA & Jerry McCarthy from Ireland. Another two
Growling Swan Delinquents were also playing with us for the first time in
big Al Evans & Toby Kreegher plus Aaron Shorten – all from Queensland,
Australia. We also had our two charming Thai lady golfers Miss Wanta & Miss
Anna returning to play with us.
It was sadly time to say goodbye to Ed “Willie Nelson” Stewart who will
shortly be returning to California after a couple of months of playing golf
with us.
Mike Allidi, Dave Neal & Niall
Stuart.
We departed the GS a couple of minutes later than our
scheduled 8.30 am and headed off through the heavy Monday morning Pattaya
traffic which slowed us down a little but we arrived at the Golf Course 47
minutes later. There was a fair bit of activity but we were able to send our
first four-ball away 15 minutes earlier than our booked tee time of 10.00
a.m. and in perfect weather, although fairly hot, and we proceeded at a
fairly good pace even with groups directly in front of us.
The breeze was helping to cool things down a touch and as usual the course
was in great shape with the excellent greens once again requiring approach
shots to finish below the hole otherwise “look out”! The company was great
and with Toddy and I having a bit of a “shoot out” it made for a very
enjoyable round of golf which was completed in four hours & twenty five
minutes, which on a hot day on a fairly busy course was quite acceptable.
We were able to have 2 grades with six podium spots in each. A Grade was for
handicaps 0 to 18 and B Grade for 19 and over. We had nearest the pins on
all the par threes and longest first putts on the 9th & 18th greens.
Ebrahim continued his good form and won the A Grade with an excellent 40
points, 2 points clear of Irishman Jerry McCarty in second place. With 2
golfers on 36 points a count back was required which resulted in Ted Morris
(20 point back nine) finishing third ahead of Mike “Hunter” Gosden (18 point
back nine) in fourth spot. Martin Todd finished fifth with 35 points and
with 3 people on 34 points the count back awarded sixth place to Miss Wanta
(20 point back nine) with Peter Bye (18 points back nine) and your writer
Peter Blackburn (17 point back nine) just missing out.
The popular winner of B Grade was Sandy “Leiperfrog” Leiper with a fine 39
points and Ed “Willie Nelson” Stewart finished second with 38 points. In
third place was Geri Crilly on 36 points and Aaron Shorten came fourth with
35 points. Max “Corsets” Bracegirdle was fifth on 33 points and scraping on
to the podium once again in sixth spot was Graham “Grunter” Buckingham with
32 points.

The Growling Swan NAGA Award, (awarded to the golfer who has the worst score
on the day and discreetly their score is not made public) was won in a count
back by Shane “Jockey” Young who after being a last start winner went from
chocolates to boiled lollies. He of course accepted the cap in very fine
style and wore it for quite some time in the bar afterwards, such is the
good nature of our Growling Swan crew.
Martin Todd took Deefa for the usual walk and collected many donations for
the needy in Pattaya from our ever generous Growling Swan golfers.
Thursday, March 14, Royal Lakeside - Stableford
For the second time this week we had a full complement of 32 players signed
up even after a late withdrawal due to sickness and The Growling Swan was a
“hive of industry” as we prepared for our departure to the popular Royal
Lakeside Golf Course.
We welcomed back good and loyal friend Dave Neal from the UK along with
Thientong who is having a break from her caddy duties at Laem Chabang. Marco
Beer from Switzerland was also back with us again and the one and only JJ
Harney has returned once more from Ireland to entertain us. We also welcomed
Mick Seaton from Brisbane, Australia, Graham Rice from Gove in the Northern
Territory of Australia and his brother John from Gladstone in North
Queensland.
The three mini vans departed the GS right on time at 8.30 a.m. and arrived
at the course 60 minutes later. I promised not to mention JJ in his car
missing the Royal Lakeside turn off due to too much talking to his
passengers, so I apologies to him for the “exposure”.
The golf course was not busy so we were invited to the first tee when we
were ready and after a relaxing preparation our first four-ball got away
right on time at 10.00 a.m. Once more the weather was nigh perfect although
a very hot day was anticipated and there was not much breeze but this course
has adequate drink stops so refreshments were readily available.
The course was as ever in great shape and the greens in particular were
beautifully prepared whilst sometimes catching out anyone who had to putt
from lengthy distances above the hole. After a fairly quick front nine of
just over two hours we slowed down a tad due to the hot conditions (me in
particular) and completed the round in the very good time of four hours &
twelve minutes. The company was terrific and it was a most enjoyable round
of golf on one of the best courses around, which most players found tough on
the day.
We were able to have 2 grades with six podium spots in each. A Grade was for
handicaps 0 to 23 and B Grade for 24 and over. We had nearest the pins on
all the par threes and longest first putts on the 9th & 18th greens.
With his 75 gross it was Mike Allidi who took top spot in the A Grade with
35 points and with two golfers on 34 points it was Miss Anna (18 point back
nine) who won the count back and took second place from Marco Beer (15 point
back nine) in third spot. Another count back was needed to determine fourth
& fifth places with Roy “Plums” Dayton (17 point back nine) prevailing over
Don Richardson (16 point back nine).
With four players on 32 points vying for the last spot on the podium it was
Alain “Inspector Clouseau” Taddei (17 point back nine) who finished sixth
from Martin Todd (15 point back nine), Graham Rice (14 point back nine) and
JJ Harney (13 point back nine).
Dave Neal was the only golfer who played to their handicap on the day and
his 36 points was good enough to win the B Grade from Graham “Grunter”
Buckingham (17 point back nine), who beat Duangjai “Kae” Tusagad (15 point
back nine) on a count back with both on 33 points. Yet another count back
was needed to sort out fourth & fifth places with 2 golfers on 32 points and
it was Dick “Reverend” Braimbridge (17 point back nine) edging out Sandy
“Leiperfrog” Leiper (14 point back nine) with Max “Corsets” Bracegirdle
finishing sixth with 29 points.

The Growling Swan NAGA Award was well won once more by Niall Stuart who of
course had no hesitation in proudly wearing the cap, being the very good
sport that he is. Martin Todd took Deefa for the usual walk and collected
many donations for the needy in Pattaya from our ever generous Growling Swan
golfers.
It was then back to the Growling Swan to continue the day’s enjoyment and
there were many tales to be told on this occasion. I guess the main one was
from the “injured” Mine Host, Peter Grey who is pondering over possible
legal proceedings against NAGA winner Niall after being forcibly hit in the
chest by a golf ball while sitting in his golf cart, which apparently flew
“through the covers” (the golf ball not the cart). Niall claims it as his
best shot of the day and most of his playing partners agreed but probably
for the result rather than the execution!
This completely dispels the theory that it is safer to use a cart when
playing with the Growling Swan Delinquents! Lots of laughs, lots of harmless
(well, almost) fun and another great day out was had by all.
Note: Growling Swan Golf welcomes golfers of any persuasion – low & high
handicappers alike, female golfers and beginners. We generally play Mondays
& Thursdays, meeting at The Growling Swan (formerly The Bunker Bar) in Soi
Chaiyapoon at 8.00 a.m. with transport departing at 8.30 a.m. For bookings
or more information please contact Peter on 0806 351 386 or email to

Tuesday, March 12, Khao Kheow – Stableford
Our monthly trip to Khao Kheow started a little earlier than usual as the
tee off time was brought forward by 30 minutes. The book-in here is easy,
and fast, so we were soon through and into the start area where we learnt
that we were to play the A & C Nines, for me the most difficult test, and we
were soon off.
Kei
Kasami and Carole Kubicki
The test on this 18 holes, off the yellow
tees, is amongst the most difficult of any course. I once did a record of
rounds there over 600+ rounds and found this course very rarely was beaten.
Something like 1 in 50 or so rounds actually beat their handicap and only
one in the hundreds beat 40 points and usually the best scores were by our
lady golfers off the red tees.
So on this day what did we expect to get? Well a difficult day out and if
you played well a sense of achieving something. On the day we found that the
course was in better condition than it had been for some time. The fairways
were not too over used, and the greens were in good condition. So as the
wind was not that strong there was a chance some of the players would come
up with a good round.
Doug
Maiko
Back at Bert’ it was soon time for the results. In the A
Flight, 0 to 17, the winner was Kei Kasami on a count back on 36 points
ahead of Mike Gaussa in second. In third was Mark West with 35 points on
another count back over Mashi Kaneta.
Then to the B Flight where the scores were a lot lower. The winner was
Carole Kubicki with 33 points ahead of Dick Warberg with 32 points in
second. For third we had a count back on 29 points that saw Keith Phillips
taking third spot and AVD just missing out. The course as usual had won.
So the moral of the day is - if you want to be in the results at K.K. either
be a lady or a high handicapper! Decision made it looks like I am in the B
Flight from now on!

Friday, March15, Plutaluang - South and East
I thought I would give this place a try as we were booked to play the East
and South, an 18 holes I find quite acceptable when the course is in good
condition. But would it be in good condition? I usually do not go along to
Plutaluang because the other two nines are to me worse that a bad toothache,
even though some players think they are great.
We had a reasonable turnout and we were soon underway. The weather looked
great and apart from the fact that the holes on the green were square the
course was really good; for the first time for a long time I enjoyed a nine
holes at Plutaluang.
Back at Bert’s the winners were announced and in top spot was Doug Maiko
with a fine 41 points ahead of Mike Gaussa in second with 37. In third was
Mike O’Brien with 35 points then a 6-way count back saw Landis Brooks in
fourth, Ken Hatton in fifth and Max Bracegirdle, Walter Baechli, Mark West,
and AVD all just losing out.
All in all a fine day at a good rate and if the course continues to be in
such good condition we will visit again. T.T.F.N.

Noi cans an Ace at Emerald
PSC Golf from Mulligans Lakeside
Tuesday, March 12,
The Emerald - Stableford
After 3 years of golf being played from Mulligans Lakeside and within
sight of the end of our basing there, we had our first Hole in One. Noi
Kamsantia was the golfer who achieved this most special of achievements
for any golfer, on the 15th hole at Emerald.
Noi
Kamsantia.
The course was in good order, with clear skies making for hot conditions,
however good scores were not in abundance. The exception was Clive Hoseason
(21), who has been in good form lately, leading the way in the higher
handicap group, 19+, with 40 points. Second place in the same flight went to
Graham Briggs (26) with 37, while a count back was needed before Kurt Erik
Persson (25) with 35 points got third over Paul Davies (27), 20/18.
In the lower handicap flight, good scores were thin on the ground, with
Jonathan Pratt (17) winning on count back over Martin Hayes (12) 20/16,
after both signed for 33 points, while third went to Neil Harvey (18) with
30.
Near pins were spread around to Mham, Martin, Neil & of course our star of
the day Noi.
Thursday, March 14,
Mt. Shadow - Stableford
Not as big a field today as low season nears, with
our venue being Mountain Shadow from the blue tees. Martin Hayes (12)
continued his good run with a well compiled 36 points, ahead of Jim
Federspiel (18) with 34. Near pins went to Jeff, Jim & Jonathan with 2.
Only 1 more week before we go to our new venue at Rendezvous Restaurant &
Bar on Siam Country Club Road. Similar conditions will apply at our new
venue to Mulligans Lakeside, where we will play golf generally on Tuesday &
Thursday, with Rendezvous hosting prompt presentations on both days.
As a PSC affiliated venue we will continue to welcome ALL golfers, including
ladies & seniors who have opted for the “Silver” tee option. Call 089 094
1841 for scheduling or enquiries. Hope to see you there, cheers & good
golfing!

Hart pips Howard for Hua Hin honours
The Outback Golf Bar 2nd Hua Hin Handicap
From left: Capt’ Steve, Murray
Hart and Howard Marson.
Monday, March 11, Springfield Royal
Country Club - Day 1
We had an easy drive down to Hua Hin on Sunday, just about 3 hours 25
minutes, with no dramas and without getting lost. Those who travelled on
Saturday had a slightly tougher journey due to heavy traffic.
With 68 players in this 2nd Hua Hin Handicap, we were predominately split
into two hotels; the City Thipurai (preferred by some because they have
bacon) and the City Beach, which must make more effort; the internet still
isn’t working (it wasn’t in August when we were here) and the breakfast is a
disaster, unless you order scrambled eggs but they don’t do bacon! Three
guys stayed at the Chalelarn Hotel which has some excellent rooms, if you’re
willing to pay a bit more.
Our first round of this three day tournament was a 10am tee-off at the
Springfield Royal Country Club, just 30 mins north of Hua Hin. To be certain
that they wouldn’t run out of carts as they did last year, 50 were booked in
advance but that didn’t work quite as smoothly as it could have done, as
they wanted them guaranteed and paid for up front and just how many walkers,
sharers and single carters we had, was anybody’s guess, however, we got
there in the end.
Springfield Royal Country
Club Clubhouse from behind the 18th green.
We were away on time from the white tees measuring 6285
yards. The course was in excellent condition and a delight to play, the
fairways and bunkers were generally good and the green fast and lovely to
putt on. Many scored comparatively well on the front nine before the wind
got up later in the round and coupled with some longer par 4’s on the back
nine, one or two cards began to spoil.
For the daily competitions, the 36 visitors and the 32 local Outbackers
played in separate groups, each consisting of two divisions, then there was
the overall three-day without divisions and ‘2’s.
The top score of the day was 39pts, of which there were two; one from Anton
Rowbottam to win Div B Guests and the other from Capt’ Steve to win Div A
Locals. John Player kept up his winning streak to take Div B Locals with 37
and surprisingly the best the Div A Guests could do was a lowly 32, attained
by Mark Rossiter.
There were four ‘2’s, all on the 6th hole, from Tim Balfour, Campbell Potts,
Jim Murray & Paul Lavender.
Div A Guests (0–15)
1st Mark Rossiter (12) 32pts

Tuesday, March 12, Banyan Golf Club –
Day 2
It was a different ball game at Banyan for the second day of the three day
tournament. After some discussion between Capt’ Steve, General Jack and the
Banyan management team, it was decided to play a shortened blue tee course,
set at 6500yds. This was partially influenced by comments from previous
years that the white tees are too short for some of the lower markers and
that they (the white tees) bring water hazards and the likes into play on
some holes.
The weather was once again absolutely brilliant, clear blue skies and very
hot and as the round got underway the wind got up, which was great for
keeping the players cool but made the course extremely difficult to play.
So with the extra length, wind and tricky greens and pin positions, the
scoring was generally low, with a number of comments ranging from, “too
long, it’s a joke and too difficult for me,” to “it was great to play”. I
know that you can’t please all the people all the time but what did happen
is that nobody was going to run away with the tournament this year, with
some 27 players within 7 shots of the lead, so that should give the bookies
something to think about!
Rod Crosswell was one of three players who scored a very fine 35pts, and
with it he won Div A Guests from Kim Stokes, who hit the ball so well all
day and was in second place on the same score.
Howard Marsden was one of five players who got lost on the way to the
course, causing for some hasty reshuffling, but nevertheless he produced a
great score of 33pts to head off one our visiting ladies, Carol Hunter, who
had 2 shots clipped off her handicap, due to the difference in rating
between the short blue tee and the red.
As for the Locals, there was a three-way count back in Div A between Murray
Hart, Martin Kingswood and Andy Butterworth all with 33pts; Muzza (Murray
Hart) got the nod to collect another 2000pts for the Race2Bkk ongoing
tourney. Div B went to Greg Hill, the third person to score 35pts, with the
second and third placed players, Pottsy & Brian Maddox, a long way back on
29.
There was only one ‘2’ today, which came from Cassie Simpson.
Div A Guests (0–15)
1st Rod Crosswell (14) 35pts
2nd Kim Stokes (15) 35pts
3rd Mark Rossiter (12) 33pts
4th Ian Jones (15) 33pts
5th Tim Balfour (11) 30pts
Div B Guests (16+)
1st Howard Marsden (19) 33pts
2nd Carol Hunter (19) 33pts
3rd Brian Elsegood (17) 30pts
4th Tom Earthrowl (19) 29pts
5th Barney Clarkson (24) 28pts
Div A Outbackers (0–17)
1st Murray Hart (14) 33pts
2nd Martin Kingswood (13) 33pts
3rd Andy Butterworth (12) 33pts
4th Paul Bourke (11) 32pts
5th Kev Waycott (11) 32pts
Div B Outbackers (18+)
1st Greg Hill (19) 35pts
2nd Campbell Potts (19) 29pts
3rd Brian Maddox (21) 29pts
4th John Player (19) 28pts
5th Bob Pearce (18) 28pts
Thursday, March 14, Banyan Golf Club –
Day 3
We had a rest day on Wednesday but there was optional organised
golf at Majestic Creek while some of the visitors chose to pay the
exorbitant prices asked by Black Mountain, who still refuse to give us a
good group rate in the high season. Personally, I paid them another visit
today to try to secure a good rate for August, of which I’m hopeful, as we
have managed to do just that for the last two years. The dates for the Syd
LeBron Memorial Putter have been set as the 25th - 30th August 2013 and
details will be released as soon as possible.
So after 36 holes and the trials and tribulations of Banyan from the blues,
the 3-day tournament was wide open, with three tied on 67pts; Murray Hart,
Kev Waycott & Steve Mann; four tied on 65, Mark Rossiter, Brian Elsegood,
Steve Milne & John Player; two more on 63, Rod Crosswell & Paul Bourke; then
another six on 62, Kim Stokes, Andy Butterworth, Martin Crichton, Rosco,
Paul Lavender & Anton Rowbottam.
However, today was the turn of the white tees, just to ease the pain but the
truth is, it was little to do with the length of the course that gave
everybody a problem, it was purely the large slopey greens which were
difficult to read and easy to three putt or even four putt, plus the gusty
varying wind.
Howard Marson (winner of Guests B) had the outstanding score of the day,
with a cracking 40pts which was also the best score of the week. If it
hadn’t been for his shocking 8 points on his back nine at Springfield, he
would surely have had a good chance to have won overall.
The divisional other winners were Tom Bayley (Guests A) with 34; Murray Hart
(Outbackers A) with 36 and Tim Knight, also with 36pts (Outbackers B).
There were eight more ‘2’s from Doug Chalkley, Steve Milne, Kevin O’Dea, &
Pottsy on the 2nd hole; Muzza on the 4th; Howard Marson & Graham Simpson on
the 15th and Howard Marson again on the 17th.
Div A Guests (0-15)
1st Tom Bayley (14) 34pts
2nd Rod Crosswell (14) 33pts
3rd Charlie Ward (12) 31pts
4th Oscar Sheehan (15) 29pts
5th Shane Brown (10) 29pts
Div B Guests (16+)
1st Howard Marson (19) 40pts
2nd John Mills (18) 36pts
3rd Carol Hunter (19) 35pts
4th Jim Murray (16) 33pts
5th Brian Elsegood (17) 32pts
Div A Outbackers (0–17)
1st Murray Hart (14) 36pts
2nd Rosco Langoulant (15) 32pts
3rd Paul Bourke (11) 32pts
4th Mick Leighton (16) 31pts
5th Stephen Mann (12) 31pts
Div B Outbackers (18+)
1st Tim Knight (22) 36pts
2nd Sugar Ray Handford (18) 32pts
3rd John Player (19) 31pts
4th David Earthrowl (22) 31pts
5th Campbell Potts (19) 30pts
It had been a good week with absolutely marvellous weather and everything
had gone quite smoothly. We had had some problems with golf-cart allocation
at Springfield and the policy regarding carts at Banyan had not been the
same as before, with them apparently not having enough carts thus requiring
players to share. We talked to the management as to what was happening and
were advised, that as of May 1st, golfers will be able to walk at Banyan and
carts will be extra.
The presentation for the week was held at the Banyan Clubhouse, starting
with the “fines” for various misdemeanours and crazy things that
participants may have said or done, before moving on to the daily prize
awards and then to the overall.
Before handing out the prizes, General Jack put it to the players that
anyone who had won a prize and had already left should have any winnings
added to the “fines” fund, this was passed unanimously. The fund when we had
finished had reached nearly 19,000 Baht which was handed over to Nigel
Cannon and will be donated to a local charity shortly, the details of which
will be published later. Well done everybody!
When it came down to the final count, Murray Hart turned out to be the
overall winner with a total of 103pts from Howard Marson on 100 and Capt’
Steve on 98.
Overall
1st Murray Hart 103pts
2nd Howard Marsden 100pts
3rd Stephen Mann 98pts
4th Brian Elsegood 97pts
T5th Rod Crosswell 96pts
T5th John Player 96pts
T7th Carol Hunter 95pts
T7th Tim Knight 95pts
T7th Paul Bourke 95pts
T10th Rosco Langoulant 94pts

Myborg - my Medal

B Flight
1st Thomas Myborg (19) net 67

Mikko Mutanen
It was a fine day for Thomas Myborg as he won the Lewiinski’s etched lead
crystal whiskey glass and a bottle of Jameson’s Irish whiskey, emblematic of
the Monthly Medal for March 2013.
As all our readers know, Thomas also gets a non-transferable invite to play
in the year-end Gold Medal. Every bit of Thomas’s net 67 effort was
necessary as there were no less than two players within one stroke of him.
He needed to look no further than his own B Flight where second place was in
the capable hands of Mikko ‘the flying fin’ Mutanen. Mikko’s second place
net 68 was two clear of Mickey ‘nine holes’ Beresford and Claude ‘try a bit’
Harder, with Mickey edging Claude for the remaining flight spot.
A Flight’s Matt Doyle of Co. Offaly gang infamy showed he was riding a
purple patch as he made it two wins in as many games with a net 68. Aussie
ace Bob Watson took the silver with a solid net 71 as Aberdeen’s favourite
son Mark Wood’s even par round closed the flight. ‘Broad more’ Bob and Kevin
‘you know who’ were worth a mention as both carded net 73’s but that’s all.
Paul Shaw, Kevin McNtee, Bob Watson and Mikko Mutanen shared the 2’s pot.
Monday, March 11, Pattana B & C - Stableford
A Flight
1st Conner Doyle (11) 41pts
2nd Kevin McEntee (7) 36pts
3rd Kevin Rogers (10) 34pts
B Flight
1st Serge Straeten (16) 34pts
2nd Gerry Roche (18) 33pts
3rd Terry Mangan (15) 32pts
C Flight
1st Ed Delaney (26) 33pts
2nd Merle Humphreys (21) 32pts
3rd Freddy Starbeck (21) 32pts
Yet another 40 plus round as Conner Doyle romped away with A Flight and man
of the match honours at the well-manicured Pattana course. Conner was five
shots clear of Kevin ‘you know who’ while Kevin had two shots in hand over
third placed namesake Kevin Rogers.
B Flight was tight with just four shots separating first and fifth. Old
friend Serge Straeten sneaked home ahead of the in-form Irishman Gerry
Roche. Fellow Irishman Terry ‘pork chop’ Mangan was the bonze recipient.
In the battered and bruised C Flight, Ed Delaney showed that clean living
was worth something as he bested the lads with a “you’ll never know how good
it was” 33 points. Merle Humphreys and Freddy Starbeck were only separated
by a count back a point adrift, as they took second and third respectively.
John Heaney and Gordon Cameron split the 2’s pot.
Wednesday, March 13, Bangpra - Stableford
A Flight
1st Bob Watson (3) 38pts
2nd Dave Shelton (7) 35pts
3rd Dave Palmer (5) 35pts
B Flight
1st Mikko Mutanen (16) 35pts
2nd Tony Glidden (13) 35pts
3rd Matt Cronin (14) 34pts
C Flight
1st (18) Walter Beachli (18) 36pts
2nd Gerry Roche (18) 33pts
3rd John Heaney (19) 33pts
Bob Watson, who was edged in the Sunday Monthly Medal, was quick to take
revenge as he shot an excellent best on the day 38 points on the lighting
and tricky greens of Bangpra and continued a successful run on the society’s
financial reserves. Bob’s fine score was three shots clear of pay window
regulars Dave Shelton and Dave Palmer, the scales tipping in Dave’s favour -
Mr. Shelton that is.
Count backs abounded in B Flight with Mikko Mutanen sitting atop the podium
with a 35 point count back victory over Tony Glidden. Matt Cronin did the
same to Eddy ‘the Eagle’ and unfortunately there was no podium spot for
Eddy.
The world famous Walter Beachli was holding the biggest bag of loot on the C
Flight podium as his very creditable even par round was three ahead of the
duo of Irish stars Gerry Roche and John Heaney. The mathematics on Gerry’s
card were more favorable than those of John.
Dave Palmer, Pat Regan and Gerry Roche received a equal portion of the 2’s
pot.
Friday, March 15, Eastern Star - Stableford
A Flight
1st Conner Doyle (11) 35pts
2nd Danny Lawson (12) 33pts
3rd Matt Doyle (12) 32pts
B Flight
1st Terry Mangan (15) 39pts
2nd Mikko Mutanen (16) 37pts
3rd Colin Davis (16) 33pts
C Flight
1st Merle Humphreys (21) 50pts
2nd Freddy Starbeck (21) 46pts
3rd Stuart Brown (26) 40pts
If it wasn’t the week of the Monthly Medal surely the star of today would
have had a shot at the title slot with this magnificent 50 points. Before
you call in on the bandit hot line it should be noted the Merle Humphrey has
played with the society many times over the past years and as handicap of
21, he will be receiving his new one shortly, so let’s hope he continues to
play to this high standard as his new handicap will require it.
Fellow C Flighters Mikko Mutanen, with an amazing 46 points, and Stuart
Brown, 40 points, must have thought the day was theirs, that was until they
entered the club house.
Irishman Terry ‘Tea bone steak’ Mangan broke from the pack to take B Flight,
carding a very creditable 39 points followed by the man on form Mikko
Mutanen, who was two shots back. The Donkey and Michael Goggin were tied on
33 points but the Donkey as been in this situation too many times to give
anything away.
The senior circuit was very quiet as Conner Doyle took the top place with 35
points. Danny Lawson on 33 points edged Co. Offaly’s Matt Doyle by a single
digit for the silver.
Jean LaRoche meanwhile was the sole heir to the 2’s pot.
Note: Lewiinski’s is situated on Pattaya land Soi 1, Beach Rd Soi13/13 near

Lightning Leith strikes twice
The Billabong Bar Golf Society
Monday, March 11, The Emerald -
Stableford
We went down to Emerald today and were joined by some of the lads from Perth
who came over for a week or so. It was a great day out, the course was in
great condition but unfortunately it was the last one for Stan Stoker as he
goes back to shovelling snow in Ottawa.
We welcomed Kiwi Bill’s nephew Luke Marsden and his mate Nathan Hogg for a
day out. The scores weren’t great but the top three in reverse order were
Willie Dunlop third with 35 points, The Nipper in second with 36 and coming
first was Leith Turnbull with 37 points.
Wednesday, March 13, Green Valley - Stableford
Our normal trip down 36 today to Green Valley where we started ahead of time
with four groups and were joined once again by some of the Perth lads. The
course is in great shape at the moment and a real pleasure to play.
Coming in third today was Willie Dunlop at the head of a four-way count back
on 32 points. His 19 points on the back nine beat the efforts of Geoff
Ryves, Arab Russell and Leith Turnbull. Second place went to Bob Finley on
33 points and coming first was Nipper with 37.
There was only one 2 today and that went to Arab Russell. He told everyone
it was a fantastic skulled 7-iron that got him to the green and a 50 foot
putt to the hole. Don’t know whether to believe it or not but it went in and
that’s all that matters.
Friday, March 15, Crystal Bay - Stableford
We started out early on our trip to Crystal Bay and had all teed-off by 10
o’clock with the course in grand condition with the greens running fast and
true. Alas only one team got in the full round and one of them was the
eventual winner. Most got as far as the 17th, but didn’t get to play
eighteen as there was so much lightening around it was coming from
everywhere and was a bit scary to say the least. When one bolt hit the tee
we were about to play from it was time for a spell at the drink stop.
Our friend George Barrie flew over for a game from Singapore, bit of a
bugger George you picked the wrong day mate, never mind hopefully you will
be back for Easter.
When we finally got into the locker you didn’t need the shower as you could
stand under the lights in the locker room there was so much water running
through them. Very dodgy indeed and maybe some money needs to spent on
maintenance. With the course being in such good condition it’s a shame the
rest of the place isn’t up to scratch. However we will be back.
Coming in 4th today was Wayne Cotterell with 34 points, being beaten on a
count back By Capt Bob. Second place went to Bob St Aubin with 35 points and
first went to Leith Turnbull with 36, but as stated these lads from Perth
did manage to play 18 holes.
Once again there were no 2’s although Cottee did miss one from about three
feet.
Note: If you are looking for a game with a friendly group call Bob on 082
204 3411 or call into the bar which is just left before you go under the
arch heading to Siam Old Course and about 200 yards down looking straight
down the Lake.
Also don’t forget our Songkran trip to Kanchanaburi playing Royal Ratchaburi
on the way up on the 17th April, Blue Saphire on the 18th and coming back we
play Uniland. It’s limited to 20 players so sign up early.

Williams takes the win
PSC golf from The Beaver Bar & Grill
Johnnie Williams.
Friday, March 15 saw fifteen golfers arrive at the
Emerald Golf Course for the Beaver Bar & Grill weekly golf outing. The
weather was warm and sultry, but bearable with a slight breeze blowing.
Emerald Golf Course was in good condition.
It was also a special day for Larry Willett as several of his Siam Ryder Cup
team members from the past arrived to take part in the day’s activities. The
scores were a little lower than usual with Johnnie Williams taking the top
honors with 34 points.
After the golf, all players returned to the Beaver Bar & Grill for some cold
libations. Sincere thanks to all the players for their continued support.
West wins by one at Emerald
PSC golf Bunker Boys @ The Ranch
Mike Lloyd (front) gets
some tips on how to lose less balls, from visiting teaching pro Keith
Smithson.
Monday, March 11, Khao Kheow C & A -
Stableford
A bright breezy morning today, and we had a strong field of 21 golfers
for our visit to Khao Kheow, where the starter allocated us to play the
C and A courses.
The par 5, first hole, on the C course is always a testing start to the
round, with water on the left and OB on the right, and our three
Scottish newcomers looked very apprehensive as they surveyed the view
from the tee. Eventually everyone got away, although Mike Lloyd, playing
his first game back, was unfortunate enough to lose three balls with his
first three shots, which may go down as a new Bunker Boys record (but
will not be included on the Hall of Fame board).
The course was not overly busy and the round progressed relatively
smoothly, albeit a little more slowly than we would hope. Gerry Cooney
and Gordon Melia both scored 34 points to win the top prizes in the A
and B Flights respectively. Gordon also picked up the least putts prize
– something which most members would have regarded as about as likely as
sighting a passing herd of flying pigs just a few games ago – so our
congratulations go to Gordon.
Shot of the day though, was awarded to William Macey, who hit his
(in?)famous backhanded chip shot from the edge of the water on the par
three C8 hole, only to send the ball skimming across the green and back
into the water on the far side – showering himself with mud in the
process!
A Flight
1st Gerry Cooney (13) 34pts
2nd Colin Greig (10) 33pts
3rd John Graham (10) 32pts
B Flight
1st Gordon Melia (19) 34pts
2nd Jack Robertson (23) 31pts
3rd Jerry Waselenkoff (19) 30pts
Near Pins: John Graham, Tim Winder, and Keiichi Kasami (2).
Least Putts: Gordon Melia (32)
Wednesday, march 13, The Emerald – Stableford
20 golfers today for our regular visit to the Emerald course which is
currently in great condition, with the recent repair work around the
greens now fully settled in. The greens themselves are in good shape and
the weather was ideal, so it was no surprise that some good scores were
returned.
Mark West is enjoying a rich vein of form and recorded the best score of
the day to win the A Flight by a single point ahead of Mark Stanley.
Mark (Stanley) was left ruing a missed putt from 12 inches on the par 3,
16th hole which would have given him the win, and also deprived him of
the outright win in the putting competition.
P.J. Redmond comfortably took the honours in the B Flight, claiming a
near pin prize on the way, and finishing five points clear of Neil
Griffin in second place.
A Flight
1st Mark West (13) 39pts
2nd Mark Stanley (11) 38pts
3rd Gerry Cooney (13) 36pts
B Flight
1st PJ Redmond (22) 38pts
2nd Neil Griffin (25) 33pts
3rd Raleigh Gosney (16) 32pts
Near Pins: John Graham, PJ Redmond, and Mark West (2).
Least Putts: Mark Stanley and Mark West (30)
Friday, march 15, Crystal Bay A & B –
Stableford
The day started brightly enough, as our field of 23 golfers arrived at
Crystal Bay and were able to tee off without delay. However, after the
first few holes the clouds started to gather and the distant rumble of
thunder could be heard.
As the leading group completed the 9th hole, the first drops of rain
were felt, and a quick dash to the nearby rest area was in order. The
storm then arrived in earnest and the following groups bravely struggled
on, until all twenty three players plus caddies were sheltering under
the same roof, as the thunder and lightning crashed all around us.
Normally at this time of year, you would expect any storm to be short
and sharp, but this one seemed content to remain directly over the
course, and the fairways and greens quickly turned into rivers and
lakes. After waiting more than an hour, with no sign of the storm
abating, it was decided that, reluctantly, we would have to cancel the
competition because even if the rain did eventually stop, it was
unlikely that the course would be playable in the next few hours.
Most players were happy to make the dash to the clubhouse, but a hardy
(desperate?) group of eight players decided to wait out the storm, and
surprisingly did manage to complete the eighteen holes before dark.
The management at Crystal Bay generously provided us with a rain-check
of the green fee for nine holes – not something which all courses do
nowadays, so our thanks go them, and we’ll be back again in a few weeks
to complete the unfinished business.
Note: The Bunker Boys are a PSC affiliated golf society, who now play
out of The Ranch bar on Pattaya 3rd Road (in front of the fire station,
and almost opposite the Buffalo Bar). We play three times per week on
Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, so if you enjoy a fun day out, and a
friendly but competitive golf competition why not come and join us.
We meet at The Ranch at 9 a.m. for breakfast and transportation, and new
players are always welcome. Contact “Buff” on 086 046 5091 or 080 605

Tough going
at Eastern Star
The Pattaya Golf Society (IPGC)
at Rabbi’s Elephant Bar
The Pattaya Golf Society visited
Eastern Star on Monday, 11th March to play a stableford competition. The
course was in reasonable condition except for the greens which were
inconsistent and two in particular, the thirteenth and eighteenth, were
under repair to such an extent that they could be unplayable with the
ball settling in the “wrong” area.
Rumours regarding the course condition had cut the field to moderate
size and the single flight struggled in the breezy conditions to make
progress. In third place was Dave Moriarty with 33 points and he was
headed by Larry Slattery and Andrew Purdie, both with 35 points.
Amazingly Andrew managed a birdie ‘2’ on the thirteenth and his feat was
matched by Mikael Andersson on the sixth.
Nothing else of merit happened on the day and Rabbi’s free beer went to
Barry Horman on the eve of his departure whilst Dave Plaiter picked up
the Booby Bevy for his “hero-to-zero” performance the previous week in
which he started with a front nine total of nine and followed it with
eighteen on the home leg.
Dobson’s long wait over
The Pattaya Golf Society enjoyed a visit to Emerald on Wednesday,
13th March when they played a stableford competition on the almost empty
course. The course was in good condition and golfers were refreshed by a
cooling breeze all day.
The single flight saw no birdie ‘2’s and Larry Slattery managed to keep
things going yet again with 36 splendid points which secured third
place. The win was shared by Masashi Iizumi and Richard Dobson on 38
points and for Richard it was his first win with PGS for many a long
day. His golf had been clinical and dependable all round.
In the losers’ pool Mr Len was the benefactor of a generous Rabbi and
the cool beer did enough to persuade him that there are some good things
in a losing golf round! The Booby Bevy went to Larry Ang, so recently
savagely cut, for his 7 - 19 points split.
Generally with Emerald in this condition all can say they had a good
day’s golf in Ban Chang.

Hellstrom holds on
Phoenix Members Golf Society
Tuesday’s winners pose with staff
members at The Relax Bar.
Mike Gerrard
It seems the high season has finished a little early this year. The
course here at Phoenix is nowhere near as busy as it has been the
last 3 or 4 months. However there are still enough players around to
fill most of the tee times on all three courses.
This last year the courses at Phoenix have shown a remarkable
improvement after the appointment of a new head green-keeper, but
now the course is getting more mature each year there does seem to
be many things that need to be addressed and improved even more.
It may be that something may happen soon with the strong rumour that
at last some company has either made an offer to buy the club or has
already done so? We will soon find out. This can only mean good news
for all concerned.
Onto the day’s game, Tuesday, March 12, and Bengt Hellstrom returned
the best score of the day of 35 points, thus proving that this
course is not the pushover many people think it is. No one played
under their handicap today. In second place was Sergio Poggi with 34
points, third came Jim Neilson with 34 and in fourth spot was Peter
Harris on 33.
Near pins went to Jim Carlson, Mark Jennings, Stuart Gordon & Jim
Neilson.
It certainly was Bengt’s day today because he also won the free
massage lucky draw prize donated by our hosts The Relax Bar at Ban
Amphur. They also donate a free drink every game as well and the
recipient of that was yours truly. The other lucky draw consolation
prize went to Mukesh Thakker, which was poetic justice because he
just missed out on a podium place by way of count back on the back
nine holes.
Onto Friday, March 15, our winner was the banana man, Granville
Swanton, who won by a good margin of four strokes to return 37
points. In second place was Pierre Bietry with 33 and third was the
man in fairly consistent form at present, Peter Harris who scored 32
points.
Near pins went to Pierre Bietry (2) and Thiery Petrement (heaven
knows how he did this with the hangover he arrived at the course
with today).
We welcomed Clive Robinson back this week after a long absence and
he duly won the free massage lucky draw prize. The free drink went
to Mark Jennings. Fitting really as this would be his last game for
a while whilst he goes back to work to bolster our pension funds up.
Richard Baldwin managed to receive the last lucky draw prize as a
consolation.
We play every Tuesday and Friday at approx 11.30 am and non-Phoenix
guests are always welcome. If you would like to join in our fun
please call me on 087 091 7565. We also organise sea fishing trips
every fortnight.

Maxwell edges Morel in tight finish
Jomtien Golf with the IPGC
Phoenix winners: Chris
Voller, Rod Howett, Grant Cadell, Wendy Chetland, Andy Oz and Bryan Rought.
Monday, March 11, Pattaya Country Club
- Stableford
This was our last visit here until the front-nine renovation has been
completed and there is no definite date yet from the management as to when
the work will be finished.
It was a very warm and sticky day as we arrived 45 minutes before our
scheduled tee off time of 9.42 but with a few words with the starter we were
able to tee off just after nine o’clock.
Alan Maxwell and Jean Morel returned the best scores of the day in division
1, both playing off 16, and the two of them scored 39 points each but Alan
beat Jean on a 19/18 back nine count back. The Scottish boy Iain Usher was
third with 38 points.
Randy Flello’s 37 beat Welshman David Phillips’ similar score on a 21/16
back nine count back to win division 2 and the cockney boy Rod Howett was
third with 35 after edging Rudi Schaefer, Darryl Blair and Sid Ottaway on a
19/18/18/17 count back.
Daeng Onsakon, playing off 17, topped the ladies division with 34 points.
Near pins went to Gerry Cooke, Jean Morel, Jerry Sweetnam, Chris Voller,
Ernst Baumaun, Darryl Blair and Andy Oz.
Jean Morel birdied the 7th and Dennis Scougall the 12th to share the ‘2’s
pot in division 1 while Andy Oz and David Phillips both birdied the 12th in
division 2. It must be an easy course on the par three’s with these names
appearing on the winners list!
Wednesday, March 13, Phoenix - Stableford
The courses seem to be very empty for this time of the year, the normal low
season for us used to start around the second week of April but for the last
couple of games there has been nobody around.
There were eleven groups out today with one three-ball out first twenty
minutes ahead of our scheduled tee time of 10.00am and playing our allocated
Lakes and Ocean nines they went round in three hours and 25 minutes. There
have been a few discussions and debates regarding slow play over the past
couple of weeks so we will be having a slightly re-organised starting block,
but today all 10 four-balls kept up with the group in front.
Wendy Chetland, playing off 28, won the ladies division with 37 points and
Anna Marie Usher was second with 36 points.
Adrian Shelley, alias Andy Oz, claimed third division honours with 38
points, beating arch rivals Rod Howett and Mark Armstrong in the process.
Those two both had 36 points but Rod beat Mark on a 21/18 back nine count
back for second spot.
In division 2 Eiichi Matsumoto was the winner with an even par 36 points,
Bryan Rought, aka ‘Mr. Happy’ came in second two points behind and in third
place was Grant Cadell who beat Dennis Scougall on a 13/10 back six count
back after they both scored 33 points.
Mike Chatt scored 37 points to top division 1, three ahead of Chris Voller
in second who beat Wichai Tanunsorn on a 21/17 back nine count back.
Near pins were won by Martin Grimoldby, Dennis Scougal, Chris Voller, Jim
Connelly, Rod Howett and David Phillips.
For a historic first, Bryan Rought birdied the Lakes 7 and Ocean 7 to scoop
the ‘2’s pot in division 1, while there was a rollover to Pleasant Valley in
division 2.
Friday, March 15, Eastern Star - Stableford
It was another very hot day here without any breeze at all and the numbers
were slightly down today due to the condition of the course, especially the
13th and 18th greens. However, after the round there were quite a few
positive remarks regarding the slight improvement in general and the 13th
hole had been completely leveled out with the new green additions.
Darryl Blair returned the best score in the two divisions, winning the
second with 37 points while Rod Howett was three points behind and in third
place was Joe Kubon with 33.
There were three scores of 33 in division 1 and Jerry Sweetnam came out on
top with a 17/14/14 count back after beating Karl Flood into second place
and Chris Voller into third.
The Irish boy Cully Monks birdied the 13th to take rollover ‘2’s pot in
division 2 and there are no two’s in division 1 so all to look forward to
next Friday.
Near pins were claimed by Bill Bertram, Mike Smith, Cully Monks and John
Williams.
The Eastern Star pot is building up again ready for the two round contest on
Mon 8th and Friday 12th April. We are still waiting for the green fee prices
for Hua Hin 2013 for our annual trip departing on May 11th but we will
update all of our members soon.

with a welcome breeze coming as we made the turn on to the 9th.
The course was in very good condition with slick greens and we made it
around in 4 hours and 10 minutes, not catching any groups on the way. It
must be the start of the low season.

Thursday, March 14, Pleasant Valley – Stableford
We were off for a very pleasant day at Pleasant Valley and the course as

out to Les Hall and a goodbye to Jack Robertson, back to Canada for 6
months.
Two flights today with the cut at handicap 19 and a full bevy of pins.
Mashi Kaneta won the A Flight with an astounding 45 points. Coming a distant

points, and fourth was Leif Kirkgaard with 36.
Henning Olsen led the B Flight with a fine 42 points ahead of Jan Lovgreen
in second, just one behind, and Mike Winfield was third on a count back over

It was another good week for TRGG around the courses with a number of new

couple of mentions. There was also the first mention for a long time of
Roger Wilkinson, who had a over par back 9 at Green Valley for 24 points and
39 overall. Miss Mod’s good form continues and she took the money from the
guys, again.

Keith Emerson tops the week
IPGC golf from The Haven
Monday, March 11, The Emerald -
Stableford
CSS 72
Div 1 (0-15)
1st Keith Emerson (12) 43pts
2nd Dennis Odgers (14) 34pts
3rd Rodney Hayes (14) 32pts
4th Gary Brown (7) 31pts
5th Russell Gilroy (14) 31pts
Div 2 (16+)
1st Shuichi Kodaka (16) 37pts
2nd Al Rolnik (19) 36pts
3rd Mike Korney (19) 35pts
4th Hal Hart (24) 33pts
5th Glenn Eldershaw (23) 33pts
Following a very hard week of golf, the expectations of an easier week
started out at the Emerald where as usual a local ‘lift and place’ rule was
in operation on the fairways. With the course in generally good shape the
scoring was of a much better order with Keith Emerson being far and away the
best in the first division as he swept all before his in returning a seven
under handicap card to win by nine clear. Keith didn’t miss a single fairway
on his way to his best score in over nine years of playing in Pattaya.
Keith Emerson.
Dennis Odgers came the nearest, although still not really in contention for
the top prize, as his two over round was good for second place ahead of
Rodney Hayes, who was playing for the first time since undergoing heart
surgery in January, in third, with Gary Brown taking fourth after winning a
count back over Russell Gilroy with a better 16 to 13.
The second division was a much closer fought affair with Shuichi Kodaka just
getting the better of Al Rolnik by a single point to take the win and Mike
Korney in third spot another one back. Hal Hart took fourth after he also
won a count back with a better 19 to 16 to leave Glenn Eldershaw in fifth.
The first division 2’s were shared between Dave Ross, Rodney Hayes and Keith
Emerson with Keith’s having been scored on the par four second hole after
chipping in from 50 yards, while the second division pool was shared between
Al Rolnik and Celia Torquato.
Mike Korney.
The day’s prizes were added to by the largesse of Mike Sanders who donated
the balance of his balls left over after his ten rounds this trip - two
sleeves of three balls out of the original five boxes he brought over
following a fire sale in Zurich prior to his departure - with one sleeve
each going to the division winners.
Prior to the prize presentations there were welcomes for John Carling, Celia
Torquato, Francis Wancer and Dennis Odgers and welcome backs for Terry
Martin, Bruno Torquato, Peter Pereira, Rodney Hayes and Dave Ross.
Wednesday, march 13, Greenwood - Stableford
CSS 72
Div 1 (0–12)
1st Erik Donnestad (4) 37pts
2nd Allen Raaen (10) 36pts
3rd Terry Martin (12) 31pts
4th Bob Heath (12) 31pts
Div 2 (13+)
1st Jens Gunnarsson (15) 37pts
2nd Rick Holmes (16) 37pts
3rd Mike Hill (22) 33pts
4th Francis Wancer (24) 32pts
Greenwood as always offered the players a great day’s golf at very
reasonable prices with the course as usual in tip top condition. With not so
many other players the rounds got off early and progressed smoothly with all
players finishing in just under four hours except for the last group, who
found the pace just a bit to quick for their ageing legs to keep up with,
straggling in some thirty minutes after the penultimate group had showered
and tested the temperature of the offerings at the bar.
Rodney Hayes.
Erik Donnestad put in another very steady round of gross 75 to take the
first division honours, just a point ahead of new boy Allen Raaen who was
the only one in the division able to mount a challenge to the winner. The
rest of the division was some way back and led in by Terry Martin who took
third by virtue of a better count back over Bob Heath with a score of 16 to
15.
The second division was also very close, having to go to a count back
between Jens Gunnarsson who found himself unusually in the second division
with the cut coming at 12, and Rick Holmes, with Jens running out the winner
by 19 to 18. Mike Hill’s steady three over handicap was good enough to earn
him third ahead of a three-way count back between Francis Wancer with 18,
Alan Hanlon with 16 and Bruno Torquato with 13.
There were no 2’s in either division which is not an unusual occurrence over
this course as the par threes are notoriously difficult to score well on.
Prior to the prize giving’s there was a welcome for new member Allen Raaen
and welcome backs for Jens Gunnarsson, Yukio Kikuchi and Hideo Akiyama.
Friday, March 15, Phoenix Lakes & Ocean - Stableford
CSS 72
Div 1 (0-15)
1st Rodney Hayes (14) 38pts
2nd Terry Martin (12) 35pts
3rd Alwyne Burley (15) 35pts
4th Peter Pereira (14) 32pts
Div 2 (16+)
1st Mike Korney (19) 42pts
2nd Celia Torquato (22) 42pts
3rd Glenn Eldershaw (23) 38pts
4th Mike Hill (22) 33pts
Once again Phoenix’s Lakes and Ocean courses were the Friday choice but this
week proved to be a lot easier than the last time out, with the wind not a
major factor. And even though the storm clouds gathered all around the
course, they moved away to drench those that had stayed in Pattaya for the
day, leaving the course bone dry while other competitions were being called
off as they were seriously affected by rain and lightning strikes.
Rodney Hayes completed his rehabilitation, winning for the first time in
several months and proving that his decision to return to Sydney for the
heart surgery was indeed well taken as he is now almost back to his old form
and once again able to enjoy his golfing days out on the course. His two
under handicap return was sufficient by three to see off the challenge of
Terry Martin on his last outing before returning to Perth as Terry took
second place after winning a count back over Alwyne Burley with a better 13
to 12 over the last six on the Ocean course after they had tied the nine on
17 a piece. Peter Pereira also had to win a count back for fourth place with
Dave Ross which he did with a superior 16 to 15 to complete the first
division podium.
The second division was led in by Mike Korney, who amazingly had to win a
count back after scoring his best in Thailand at six under handicap as Celia
Torquato almost stole it with her second round in the week of over 40
points, which in the process attracted the attention of the handicap systems
exceptional scoring reduction leaving her with a four stroke reduction. Mike
managed to squeeze out 21 points from the back nine to deny Celia whose 20
was just not quite up to the mark.
Glenn Eldershaw may have though he was in with a chance until hearing of the
exploits of the top two in the division when he had to settle for third
after a very nice round which left Mike Hill once again in the minor placing
some five points further back.
Once again there were no 2’s in the second division but Erik Donnestad
cleared out the unusually high rollover pot in the first division with a
simple putt from two feet on the 149 yard second hole on the Lakes course.
Back at The Haven there was a welcome for new member Markku Myllymaki.
Note: If you would like to play with The Haven group, you can contact mobile
082 219 0965 or call in to The Haven Hotel, at 185 Soi 13, between Beach
Road and 2nd Road. All transportation to the course is arranged and you do
not need to sign up prior to the day, but you should be there by 8.15 on
Monday, Wednesday, and Friday on the days that you wish to play. A schedule
of courses to be played can be found on our web site at
www.thehaven-hotel.com.

Oz has a quiet day
The Backyard Golf Society
Friday’s top three pose with
the staff at Blue Sky Bar.
A good turnout at Emerald on March 15, highlighted by the
society discipline secretary, Mike ‘the taxi’, pointing out to the assembled
players a few rules of golf and expected etiquette prior to their tee off.
Singled out, unfairly some might say, was our Andy Oz, for too much
‘myxomatosis’ (rabbit) whilst on the course. Greatly offended, Oz stormed
off down the first fairway, keeping himself to himself and without holding
the caddy’s hand once or promising her things he couldn’t deliver. His two
partners, Mike the Taxi and Martin, were shocked at this new behaviour and
even more shocked as Oz romped home with 40pts. Here endeth the lesson..
Don ‘the divorcer’ and Tom ‘the bandit’ we’re close behind with 36 and 35
pts respectively.
The near pin went to Mickey while Randy cleaned up the skins with his only
decent hole of the day at the 17th. He had 12 skins, Martin got 3, Tom 2 and
Don 1.
Then it was down to BC where the winner and Randy bought the boys a drink
with their ill gotten gains. We said farewell to Randy who will be back in
Canada by the time this gets to print. He said he will be bringing his
brother next time he comes. Apparently he is the opposite of Randy in looks
and personality, must be a good looking, soft spoken, quiet, French Canadian
loving sort of guy with a sense of humour.
Mike ‘the taxi’ wants to remind everyone that slow play will not be
tolerated.

Lapsley leads from the front
IPGC Golf from the Tara Court
Sunday, March 10, Mt. Shadow —
Stableford
It is getting noticeably quieter here now and today we got off the tee
nearly 30 mins before our tee time. It’s also starting to get a bit hotter
now that we are well into March.
Charlie Lapsley took the honors again today for the second Sunday in a row
with an excellent 39pts and he also got the only 2 so a good payday for
Charlie!
In second place was Joe McArdle with 34 points followed by Gerry O’Dwyre
with 33 and in fourth was Ted Murphy with 30.
Back at O’Garas Bar and Restaurant we said goodbye to Cathal Donoghue and
James Byrne who had their last game with us for this trip. I hope they are
enjoying the nice snow back in Ireland!
1st Charlie Lapsley (9) 39pts
2nd Joe McArdle (15) 34pts
3rd Gerry O’Dwyre (8) 33pts
4th Ted Murphy (23) 30pts
2’s: Charlie Lapsley
Tuesday, March 12, Khao Kheow - Stableford
We were at Khao Kheow today to play the C and A courses. There was a group
in front of us on the A course who were playing very slowly but fortunately
they went on to the B course so we were able to speed up when we got on to A
and still got round in a reasonable time.
As usual the course was in very good condition although the greens don’t
seem to be as fast as they used to be. Nobody managed to play to their
handicap and Charlie Lapsley won again with 33pts. Charlie has had a very
successful trip this year and has been playing very good golf.
Robert Hanson was second with 29pts and in his last game with us for this
trip was Gerry O’Dwyre in third with 27. Not very good scoring today but it
is a very difficult course.
There were no 2’s so a carry over to Thursday.
1st Charlie Lapsley (9) 33pts
2nd Robert Hanson (18) 29pts
3rd Gerry O’Dwyre 27pts
Thursday, March 14, Laem Chabang - Stableford
We were back at the most beautiful course of them all today, Leam Chabang
where we played B and C courses. Unfortunately the heavens opened and we got
thunder and lightning and very heavy rain which made the course unplayable
so we had to call it off after 15 holes, so no competition or results today.
On another note, why do some people put their names down on the time sheet
and then not turn up? It is very bad manners and is not acceptable and these
people will not be welcome with us in the future.
As I said no results today but we will be back here again next week and
don’t forget we can get up to 40% discount on the Green Fees and (almost)
everyone is welcome to join us.
Note: The Tara Court Golf Group plays every Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday,

Practice pays off for Pelly
PSC golf from The Outback Golf Bar
Monday, March 11, Burapha – Stableford
There were 27 players here at Burapha to play the A & B nines from the blue
tees. Welcome to Tony Adams and his group and also to Bart Hantke and his.
Course specialist John Cunningham excelled again with a fine 37pts,playing
off a handicap of 6, to win Div A by one from Mark Potter, Gary Hogg and Bob
Finley, all on 36, separated only on count back in that order.
In Div B, the honours went to another expert round this course, Bob
Lindborg, with 36pts, ahead of Dave Coller (35), John O’Keefe (34) and Ivan
Plunkett with 32.
There was only one ‘2’ from John Cunningham on A3.
Div A (0-14)
1st John Cunningham (6) 37pts
2nd Mark Potter (14) 36pts
3rd Gary Hogg (9) 36pts
4th Bob Finley (14) 36pts
Div B (15+)
1st Bob Lindborg (20) 36pts
2nd David Coller (24) 35pts
3rd John O’Keefe (16) 34pts
4th Ivan Plunkett (22) 32pts
Tuesday, March 12, Khao Kheow – Stableford
16 played A & B off the yellows today. It was a good turnout considering
that 68 Outbackers were up in Hua Hin playing golf. We teed off 30 minutes
early at 9am but at least there was a bit of a breeze to keep us cool. The
greens were a nightmare as the pin positions were put in the most ridiculous
places possible leading to many having 3 putts on numerous holes.
John Lawton whinged and whined all the way round about the greens so maybe
we could have a new nickname for him or give him the Boo Hoo Cup. Our poor
ears were sore by the 18th hole.
Paul Kruining got his first win at last with 36pts off 36 H’cap, so we may
see that start to come down soon, well done Paul! Second place went to one
of Monday’s winners, Bob Lindborg with 33, just edging out Moi, with a
similar 33.
A very special welcome to the Turnip, at last playing a different course to
his home course (PCC) and a very fair 30pts he scored too, to gain fifth
place and his first Race2Bkk points.
There were four ‘2’s from Tony Adams & Martin Burbidge (hole 5), Gary
Hallawell on the 12th and Martin Burbidge got another one on the island
green, 17th.
1st Paul Kruining (36) 36pts
2nd Bob Lindborg (20) 33pts
3rd Suzi Lawton (20) 33pts
4th Martin Burbidge (9) 31pts
5th Dennis Persson (17) 30pts
Wednesday, March 13, Siam Plantation – Stableford
Our thanks to Lumpy for running the day for us in our absence, even though
he failed to play himself and substituted his wife Noodle instead, who
incidentally scored 26pts but we can’t find her card! 24 players on the A &
C, another great turnout on this wonderful course, which is a “must play”
now for many visitors.
Gary Hallawell, having his third game of the week, came good at last to win
Div A with 37pts from Siam member, Steve Poznanski with 35. In Div B it was
Mark Potter who took the win, also with 37pts, from Rex Thomas on 35.
There was only one ‘2’ from Martin Burbidge on C8.
Div A (0-12)
1st Gary Hallawell (11) 37pts
2nd Steve Poznanski (12) 35pts
3rd Martin Burbidge (9) 34pts
Div B (13+)
1st Mark Potter (14) 37pts
2nd Rex Thomas (20) 35pts
3rd Colin Jenkins (18) 32pts
Wednesday, March 13, Eastern Star – Stableford
As Siam Plantation was full today, we booked a couple of last minute tee
times down at Eastern Star; five cards were returned with Adam Smith being
returned as the winner on 35pts from Paul Greenaway with 32. The course was
reported to be in good condition, which may warrant a scheduled return there
soon, especially if the discount vouchers are still available.
Friday, March 15, St. Andrews – Stableford
Twenty-seven players went to St Andrews as Green Valley had a member’s
tournament. The day started well as we got off the tee on time and the first
three groups completed the course in good time, but then things slowed down
and unfortunately the last three groups were caught in a thunderstorm with
two holes to play, which made for a soggy ending.
The course was, in my opinion, nowhere near the condition of Green Valley
and as a so called “premier course” it was not up to standard. The tees are
some of the worst around Pattaya and the greens were like putting on shag
pile carpet; give me Green Valley any day!
Dennis Pelly has been off the course for a few weeks now and in hiding but
now we know why, he’s been having a number of lessons just down the road
from a Thai pro. Obviously it must all be working as apparently he was level
par (gross) for the front nine! Anyway, Dennis went on to score a brilliant
42pts to win Div A by three from Dayle Hoek, who was one of the lads warming
up for the inaugural Aussie Amateurs Tournament, four rounds of strokeplay
at Burapha.
Kev Hamilton, having his last game before returning to cold UK for a couple
of months, took third with 38 with Peter LeNoury heading a three way count
back on 33.
Welcome back to Frank Sharkey, who brought along David Pringle and Jack
Cooney and well done to David Pringle who won Div B with 38pts playing off
30. John Stafford was second with 37, beating Frank on count back, also with
37.
There was only one ‘2’ from Paul Greenaway on the fifth.
Div A (0-15)
1st Dennis Pelly (11) 42pts
2nd Dayle Hoek (12) 39pts
3rd Kevin Hamilton (15) 38pts
4th Peter LeNoury (10) 33pts
Div B (16+)
1st David Pringle (30) 38pts
2nd John Stafford (17) 37pts
3rd Frank Sharkey (18) 37pts
4th Anton Rowbottam (16) 35pts
Note: The Outback Golf Bar is situated about 6km from Sukhumvit Road along
Soi Siam Country. Call Jack on 081 578 1956.

GolfNutter: Putting in Pattaya
Grass varieties being tested
at the Asian Turfgrass Center’s research facility near Bangkok.
Welcome to Golfnutter’s Blog – a new weekly commentary highlighting
contemporary golfing issues, in Pattaya and beyond.
Ever wondered why certain putts don’t behave the way you expect? Why the
pace of some greens appear fast, yet one hole later the pace slows
significantly? What is it about putting surfaces in the tropics compared
to the temperate climates of much of Europe, North America and
Australasia? And why do local caddies say “Lohm” (down) or “Khung” (up)
when there is no slope to be seen?
The answer is grass, or to be more exact, grain.
Grain refers to the direction grass grows, or more precisely, the angle
at which the blades of grass tend to lie. Grain can and does have a huge
impact on the speed of the putt, especially with the types of Bermuda
grass used in tropical climates. It will also influence direction. Some
courses around Pattaya, such as Bangpra and Emerald, are more “grain
obvious” than others. Whereas courses using thinner-bladed grasses on
their putting surfaces, such as Mountain Shadow, Crystal Bay and Khao
Kheow, have grain that is less apparent to the naked eye – but is there
nonetheless.
Reading Grain
The direction of the setting sun, nearby mountains or water is
irrelevant. Over here, there is one simple way to read grain; simply
walk up to the hole you are playing and look in – it should tell you all
you need know. Look at the inside rim of the hole – the cut-line where
the edge meets the surface of the green. You will notice one-third of
the hole’s circumference is ragged. Directly opposite this point is
smooth by comparison.
The ragged look is caused by the grass’s tendency to grow and fray. If
your ball is on the same side of the hole as this rough and ragged
portion, you are putting into the grain. If your ball is located
opposite, on the smooth-cut side, you are putting down-grain. The
difference in putting speed between down-grain (lohm – sounds like
loom), and up-grain (khung), is massive.
When putting cross-grain, expect the ball’s route to be influenced by
the direction of the grain, especially when your ball slows as it
approaches the hole.
Tell-tale signs around the hole at some courses may not be as obvious as
others. If you can’t tell by looking at the rim of the cup – and I would
be surprised – check the fringe – the grass on the edge of the green.
Sometimes this grass is sufficiently long where you can see the
direction of the grain simply by looking at it. This method works best
mid to late afternoon, whereas the rim of the cup can tell all from
early in the day.
Handling a downhill putt that is also down-grain
Many courses around Pattaya will give you this very challenge. The one
thing you don’t want is to putt short as that is the worst possible
outcome. The speed of your putt should be determined by two things – the
length of your back-swing and where on the putter-face you hit the ball.
All putts, whether uphill, downhill or level, should be hit with an
accelerating putter-head. If faced with a particularly fast putt, where
you simply want to get the ball started on line, you can hit it
following a short back-swing, or instead of the sweet-spot, use the toe
of your putter. Whatever method is chosen, it is still a hit. Never use
a decelerating stroke.
Now back to your 25-footer, downhill and down-grain; how do you get this
ball to stop? It’s possible that you can’t, so try not to worry about
it. Just ensure you do not leave it short by any distance greater than
18 inches.
Using the toe of your putter does have a dampening effect, but practise
it first. Personally, when faced with this type of putt, where length
dominates line, I focus solely on the feel of my right hand giving the
ball a gentle tap. Normally, my hands apply equal pressure in my putting
stroke, but not when putting downhill and down-grain.
As with putting generally, it is whatever works best for you. There is
no right or wrong way regarding grip, stance or swing, so long as the
ball is struck squarely with an accelerating putter-head.
Effective putting in Pattaya is absolutely dependent on reading greens
correctly. A major part of this is to determine grain direction and the
effect it has on line and length, particularly length. Achieve this and
your total putts per round will drop.
How sure am I about all of this?
As any good caddie will tell you, “Ha sip, ha sip.”
Happy golfing!

Easy Tiger IV wins Platu Open in Pattaya

Pattaya, Sunday, March 17. (Photo/Scott Finsten)
Lulu Roseman
‘Easy Tiger IV’, the new Platu 25 launched last week by Australia’s Easy Tiger
Racing Team celebrated her first appearance in style by winning at her debut
regatta, the Platu 25 Open held March 16-17 at the Ocean Marina Yacht Club in
Pattaya.
The Platu 25 Open featured a truly international fleet with teams from Japan,
Russia, England, Holland, France, Estonia, Cambodia, Malaysia, Thailand and
Australia taking part. Team Tiger finished each race in the top three over the
two day series with a final score tally of 1,1,1,3,1,2,2 and eleven points.
Their closest rivals, the Russian team onboard ‘Niaid’ finished second with 14
points followed by Rolf Heemskerk, racing his still unnamed boat, and the sister
ship to ‘Easy Tiger IV’, with 24 points in third.
“I am very happy with the new boat and the team’s performance. We are absolutely
ecstatic with this result. It really doesn’t get any better than this and to
have achieved it with a new boat is just magic,” a delighted skipper Chris Way
said afterwards. “The Tiger crew has done an outstanding job in both preparation
and sailing to the best of our ability. We can’t wait to return to defend our
2012 Coronation Cup title in May,”

The Platu 25 is a 25-foot mono hull yacht designed by Bruce Farr of Farr Yacht
Design fame with features incorporated from the Corel 45, Mumm 30 and Farr 40
designs. The class has ISAF status and the Worlds are held annually in Europe
with fleet sizes of between 60-80 boats.
‘Easy Tiger IV’ was constructed by XSP at Batam Island in Singapore who are one
of the official builders of the class. Several of the Easy Tiger Racing crew
were recently on site in Singapore to oversee the final stages of construction
including the surveying of the rig and the fitting and alignment of the keel and
rudder.
“Our expectations going into this event in Pattaya were pretty low and realistic
given the performance of the boat was unknown. But after Saturday’s results we
knew we were fast and had a pretty good shot of winning it. We just tried to
sail as cleanly and consistently as possible. Once we have over 10 knots of wind
speed we just seem to take off,” Way explained.
On Saturday the team recovered well from a disappointing OCS in the fourth and
final race of the day. After returning to the line and starting correctly, they
managed to claw their way back through the fleet to finish third over the line.
“That was hard work but good training and a real the turning point for us. From
that moment on our fierce determination really kicked in and it was game on.
Victory was our only goal.
“Initially we thought this event would be a training regatta where we would get
to learn and tune the new boat as well as further hone our skills. We are so
glad we did it and to win just makes the experience all the more sweeter,” said
Way.
“While we are a pretty resilient team we are bruised and battered Tigers. Last
night at Go Kart racing Peter Gregg hit the wall and bruised his ribs while
Tommy Spithill bruised his elbow and may have broken his pinkie finger.
Regardless, they both put in 110% effort today. Our ‘don’t call it quits before
2:00 a.m. curfew’ was enforced throughout this regatta and it seems to have
enhanced our performance rather than detracted from it,” joked the Aussie
skipper.
“Our missing Tiger crew member Malcolm Clark will be back with us for the
Coronation Cup together with our coach Alex Pallu. Having Alex here racing on
the boat over the last few days has been awesome. He is such a critical member
of our team.”
‘Easy Tiger IV’ will be packed up and stored at the Ocean Marina Yacht Club
until the team returns in early May to prepare their Platu 25 Coronation Cup
defense at the Top Of The Gulf Regatta being held from May 3-7.

Muay Thai vs. Pattaya water fight
Pawinee Kaewkert
A meeting was held at Pattaya City Hall on Monday, March 18 to discuss
arrangements for the annual muaythai ‘Fight Night’ scheduled to take place at
Bali Hai Pier in Pattaya next month.
Nopparat Poottharatanamanee,
Deputy Managing Director of ‘Thai Fight’, talks to city officials and police
representatives at the meeting held March 18 at Pattaya City Hall.
Last year’s inaugural contest was memorable for the surprise and tearful
appearance of suspended fighter Buakaw Por. Pramuk, who defied his promoters’
orders and put in a spectacular ring performance to knock out Russia’s Zaripow
Rastem.
This year organizers will potentially have more than one rogue fighter to worry
about however as the date set for the event is April 19, the traditional Wan Lai
(or final Songkran day) here in Pattaya.
Mayor Itthipon Kunpluem expressed his concerns at the meeting that boxing fans
would find it difficult getting transportation to the stadium on that day,
however Nopparat Poottharatanamanee, the Deputy Managing Director of ‘Thai
Fight’ said the main objective was for the event to coincide with the water
festivities here in Pattaya, to showcase two celebrated aspects of Thai culture
to the world.
‘Fight Night’ this year has adopted the title ‘4 Avatars’ and will feature star
boxers Yodsaenklai Fairtex, Sudsakorn Sor. Klinmee, Saiyok Poompanmuag and
Ikkyusan Kor.Roongtanakiat. The event will take place from 5.45 p.m. – 8.00 p.m.
and will be broadcast live on Thai TV Channel 3.

Chonburi looks overseas
for winning sports strategies
Chonburi is looking overseas for examples on how to
improve its sports competitions and facilities.
At a March 11 Chonburi Sports Committee meeting, Deputy Gov. Pongsak
Preechawit reviewed plans for trips done in coordination with the Sports
Authority of Thailand to foreign sport institutions to observe and collect
information that can be used as guidelines in operating sports projects in
the province.
Sports authority Director Thongjing Siriphaibun also summarized the results
of recent competitions in which Chonburi athletes participated.
At the National Sports Games in Chiang Mai Dec. 9-19, Chonburi earned 65
gold, 39 silver and 54 bronze medals. The province sent 675 athletes in
total.
For the disabled games in Chiang Mail Jan. 15-19, 347 athletes from Chonburi
participated, earning 50 gold, 53 silver and 46 bronze medals.
He said the authority and province are fostering future success through its
Sports Hero program, which pays stipends of up to 3,250 baht per month to 66
athletes in 13 sports. Twenty coaches are also employed. (CPRD)

Ellingsen brace sinks City
in Derby game
Bangkok Casuals League 2013
Paul Frain
Pattaya City faced local rivals Planet FC last weekend and were
looking for revenge following defeat in their previous encounter last month.
Planet FC went into the match leading the league standings over the Londoner
by one point, while City were lying in 6th place.
The game was even in doubt due to a downpour just prior to kick-off, but it
was decided to wait 30 minutes for the pitch to recover. When the game
eventually started it was Planet who applied the early pressure and they
gained a number of free kicks but to no end result.
City finally got themselves into gear and the game was flowing end to end as
both sides played some constructive football. It was City who struck the
first blow however when Tshuma beat three Planet defenders and passed the
ball to the unmarked Vorontsov, whose shot left the keeper stranded to give
City the lead 1-0.
Before the City team could even draw a breath though they were bringing the
ball out of their own net as Planet, straight from the kick off, charged
downfield and Bjorn Ellingsen’s shot flew past the City keeper to make it
1-1.
Both sets of defenses tightened up after this but just before half time
City’s Paul Fox made a good run down the right and found top scorer
Vorontsov, who made it 2-1 to restore City’s lead.
The second half started with Planet attacking the City goal but good work by
the defense kept chances at a premium. City could only counter attack but
the Planet pressure began to tell and the City keeper Yorgui, despite making
a great double save, could not stop Planet’s Kevin Gibbons from tapping the
loose ball home to equalize and make it 2-2.
Planet now went for the winner as more attacks descended on the City goal.
The defense held out manfully but eventually the pressure told when a good
passing move by Planet down the left found Bjorn Ellingsen alone at the far
post and he gave the keeper no chance to prod the ball home to give Planet
the lead at 3-2.
It was then City’s turn to put the pressure on the Planet defense and
Vorontsov from the left saw his shot go along the empty goal line only to be
cleared by a thankful Planet defender. City tried to get the equalizer but
with good covering by the Planet defense City ran out of time and Planet
gained three valuable points in their quest to win the Championship for the
second year running.
