Chiang Mai burning

Editor;
Re: Chiang Mai speeds up easing of smog ahead of Songkran festival (PM / MCOT Tuesday, 26 March 2013) - LOL, the dust level has been way over 200+ the last few days and there are hundreds, I repeat, hundreds of fires just outside and around the city of Chiang Mai (even more around Chiang Rai and Mae Hong Son). The so called officials haven’t done anything about it. They are even burning in national parks, and the armed guards are just sitting there picking their noses and smoke their krongthips. It is also nice to know that Khun Adisorn is more concerned about tourism than the health of the local population. 90,000 people have suffered from illness since January. Disgrace!

Workmanship

Editor;
On the soi where I live in Pattaya, a new 4-inch PVC water line was installed this week. In one day, a 2-ft deep, 18-inch wide trench was dug, the pipe strung, coupled, laid in the trench and backfilled. None of the broken concrete from the original street (other than extra large pieces) was removed, just dumped back in the trench on top of the pipe. No leak test was made prior to backfilling.
It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to know that sharp edged, broken concrete dropped on PVC pipe will eventually, through time and settlement, damage, or even wear holes in the pipe, not to mention coupling leaks if they were not tested before hand.
Are there no rules or quality inspections required for civil work in Thailand?
And we wonder why, when work like this is done, 6 months later crews are back digging up the line to find out where all this water is disappearing too.

Chiang Mai burning, too

Re: Chiang Mai speeds up easing of smog ahead of Songkran festival (PM / MCOT Tuesday, 26 March 2013) - Where did you get this information? This is a joke. Closely monitoring, does that mean they are standing close to the fires watching them burn? People are leaving, getting their children out. Will threaten health? It’s long past will threaten.

No mention of traffic enforcement

Editor;
Re: Land Transport Dept to hold road safety promotion activities during Songkran (PM Friday, 29 March 2013) - As usual, no mention of traffic law enforcement. When will Thailand decide to implement a co-ordinated response to the carnage on the Thai roads based on what has been achieved elsewhere? Or would that be admitting that they do not know what is best and lose face?

Chiang Mai (still) burning

Editor;
Re: Chiang Mai speeds up easing of smog ahead of Songkran festival (PM / MCOT Tuesday, 26 March 2013) - Ha! I live in Chiang Mai and can say without any hesitation that none of this is true. CM is as smoggy as ever and the government is doing absolutely nothing about it. How about stopping the fires rather than “spraying water mist into the air”? Burning season smog is miserable and a huge health concern and it would be nice to see real journalism uncovering the reasons behind it and trying to put a stop to it rather than more false government propaganda.

Start with rental bikes & tour buses

Editor;
Re: City regulators stand firm against street vendor protest over fines, arrests (PM Friday, 29 March 2013) - Why don’t the police & politicians start on the scores of rental bikes & tour buses if they want to start fixing traffic woes? The vendors are minor compared to the others.

Keep pavements safe

Editor;
Re: City regulators stand firm against street vendor protest over fines, arrests (PM Friday, 29 March 2013) - Yes the traders are a hindrance. I travel along Pattaya Klang daily and find that they not only obstruct traffic but make life difficult for people using the pavement. This, I hasten to add, is not confined to just Pattaya Klang but to most of the small sois close by. As for tourists I lol; mostly Thais use these vendors. So move on and keep the traffic flowing and the pavements safe for tourists/Thais alike.

Will the duel track budget be sufficient and well invested?

Editor;
Re: SRT board finally approves dual-track railway plans (PM Thursday, 28 March 2013) - Will the duel track budget be sufficient and well invested? By means of engineering and transportation studies, overtake and lay-by tracks could save needed funds that could be used for rolling stock upgrades and signaling. This brings in the question as to whether the duel track cost estimates include signaling, grade crossings, flyovers and crossovers required for a safe and efficient rail system.

Upset over losing Idol

Editor;
True Vision shows its lack of vision in canceling one of most popular channels with little notice. If there are any “die hard” American Idol or Glee fans - bad news. While viewing American Idol this Friday March 29 a message scrolled in Thai and English at the bottom of the screen stating that effective Monday April 1 True was canceling Star World channel 54 and replacing it with a lifestyle format channel (cooking, glamor, health, and travel programs).
I had my Thai wife call and evaluate the situation and check if perhaps Star World would be reassigned to a different channel. After a long delay the True Visions phone operator came back and said Star World was simply being canceled. Little advance notice via a scrolled message that True Vision is “sorry for the inconvenience”. The True Visions phone operator did state that if there were enough complaints they might reconsider canceling Star World. Hence why I am bringing this information to your attention so that you if you enjoy the programs offered on Star World then perhaps you should contact True Visions and express your concerns over their decision to cancel a popular channel.
List of some programs that will be lost if Star World is canceled: Glee, American Idol, America’s Next Top Model, Revenge season 2, Greek, Miss Advised, New Girl, Parenthood, How I Met Your Mother, Royal Pains, Ben and Kate, Happy Endings, Switched At Birth, 90210, Slash TV, Cougar Town, Don’t Trust The B*** In Apartment 23, Raising Hope, Happy Endings.
