Hack - no hacker
PSC golf from The Growling Swan
San Mig Stu
Monday, April 29 - Pattana B & C – Stroke
All five groups who took the journey to Pattana Golf Course for the end
of month stroke event (Monthly Mug Award) agreed it was well worth the
effort as the course was in great shape having had good rain over the
past few days, and a nice breeze persisted throughout the day to help
alleviate the ever present sunshine heat.
Paul
Hack (right) receives his Monthly Mug from Peter Grey.
The white tees were playing 6,700 yards and the
yellows were 6,300 yards off B and C nines so it was decided, given that
the ground was perhaps going to be a tad heavy, that the yellow tees
would be a fair test of golf. This proved correct as only two players
managed to break par or even.
There were no complaints from any of the players as the fairways and
bunkers were very well presented and the greens, perhaps a little slower
than normal, putted true if you picked the right line. The caddies were
fun and all in all another great golf outing with a good bunch of
blokes.
Having completed our rounds in about 4hrs 25 minutes after our ten
o’clock tee-off time, we had a brief lunch and were back at the Growling
Swan by 5pm for early presentations by the publican Peter Grey (filling
in for Peter Blackburn who is in Oz for a few weeks), which were over by
5.30pm. This pleased a number of players as many had other engagements
to go to or were just happy to get home and put their feet up.
Peter started the formalities by first welcoming Chris Bracegirdle
(brother of Max) who had his first hit out with us and his brother Geoff
who has recently returned to Pattaya for another stint. Farewells were
made to the delightful dad and son duo of Pat and Mike Fleetwood who
return to the US/Korea. Another farewell was also made to Steady Eddie
and good golfer Bill McGarvie who has vowed to be back with us again
next year.
Paul Hack was the overall winner and the recipient of the monthly mug
with a commendable gross 83 and net 69.

The winner of the NAGA award, presented to the player posting the worst
score of the day, was Dick Brainbridge who took the honour on count
back.
Deefa the Dog is a critter who is paraded around after presentations for
acceptance of any spare change from the golfers of the day. We were
pleased to see (Lets here it for) Ken Bernek turn up at presentations
today to pass around Deefa, having had major back surgery ten weeks ago.
He says he should be good to start playing again in about another three
to four months and we all wish him a speedier recovery.
The monies collected each week are accumulated and disposed of toward
worthwhile charities in the Pattaya area through the PSC committee. All
donors can be proud that they have over the past few years brought fresh
filtered water stations, sports equipment, swim wear and the like for
many needy school children in the immediate area.
Note: Growling Swan Golf welcomes golfers of any persuasion – low & high
handicappers alike, female golfers and beginners. We generally play
Mondays & Thursdays, meeting at The Growling Swan in Soi Chaiyapoon at
8.00 am with transport departing at 8.30 am. For bookings or more
information please contact Peter on 080 635 1386 or email to

Dore in dominating form at Burapha
IPGC golf from The Tara Court & The Links
Sunday, April 28, Green Valley (white
tees) – Stableford
Another hot day today at Green Valley, where although the greens are still
not fully recovered from the recent pole forking and sanding, the course is
otherwise in very good condition. Quiet today, especially for a Sunday, and
we got round quickly.
![](pictures/s12Tara32-1.jpg)
Charlie Sheppard.
Charlie Sheppard was the man of the match today with an excellent 39pts to
finish ahead of Vincent Gros who came second on count back over Alec Hoare.
There were no 2’s today.
1st Charlie Sheppard (19) 39pts
2nd Vincent Gros (19) 37pts
3rd Alec Hoare (18) 37pts
Tuesday, April 30, Bangpra (white tees) -
Stableford
An extremely hot day today at Bangpra; it was a
bit uncomfortable actually for golf. Between the heat and with a lot of the
tees placed well back and the course playing long, the scoring wasn’t very
good today. John Batty was the winner with 33pts followed in by Joe McArdle
just one back.
There were no 2’s today so the pot carried on to Thursday.
1st John Batty (9) 33pts
2nd Joe McArdle (13) 32pts
Thursday, April 2, Burapha (blue tees) - Stableford
The challenge was Burapha today, where we played
the A and C courses. The course in beautiful condition and the greens on A
absolutely beautiful and fast, but unfortunately when we went to C they had
been pole forked and sanded so not so good. However, it didn’t stop one of
our players from having an excellent score.
![](pictures/s12Tara32-2.jpg)
Brian Dore.
Despite having a few three-putts on the C
course, Brian Dore went round in one over par 73 gross, which on such a long
difficult course was an exceptional score. Brian was playing his last game
for this trip so he will bring happy memories of his golf back to Ireland
with him.
John Batty was second with 37pts and Joe Peters thought he had done enough
to win with 35pts on such a long course, but only managed to come third.
Tony Pike had the only 2 of the day.
1st Brian Dore (5) 40pts
2nd John Batty (9) 37pts
3rd Joe Peters (20) 35pts
Note: The Tara Court Golf Group and The Links play every Sunday,
Tuesday and Thursday, leaving O’Gara’s Bar and restaurant in the Tara Court
on Pratamnak Rd and The Links on Soi Bukhaow around 10.00 a.m. Sign up
either in O’Gara’s or The Links or ring Joe on 089 249 1364 or John on 080
021 1034 and they will book you in.

Gaussa crowned ‘golfer of the month’
PSC golf from Tropical Bert’s
Derek Brook
Tuesday, April 30, Mountain Shadow – Stableford
The test for the day was to be Mountain Shadow, a
notoriously difficult course but one that these days is always in good
condition and a pleasure to play. Plus it has good rate, so after a cuppa at
Bert’s it was off for a day in the sun.
Dick
Warberg (right) presents The MBMG Group Golfer of the Month award to Mike
Gaussa.
Soon on the first tee, we found the course
nearly empty, still the sun was out and so was a very strong wind. The
course was in very good condition, with clean fairways, rough as is usual
here, and the greens were a little slower than normal, so the course was a
fine place to walk around, except for the heat. Most struggled towards the
end, particularly the scribe.
Round over it was soon in cars and back to Bert’s for the results, and these
were really important as it was The MBMG Group Golfer of the Month day.
The winner today was Mike Gaussa with 36 points ahead of a count back on 35
points that saw Bill McGarvie in second and Brian Parish in third. In fourth
was Barry Elphick with 34 points.
With his win on the day Mike Gaussa won the MBMG Group Golfer of the Month.
Well done Mike!
Near Pin: Mashi Kaneta, Bob Watson, Bill McGarvie.
Friday, May 3, The Emerald – Stableford
Just another day out in paradise? Well not quite, it
was windy and very hot, but apart from that it was a really good day out.
![](pictures/s13Bert32-2.jpg)
Tuesday winners pose with Pu
and one of Bert’s finest.
This course tends to be one you either
love or hate, it really all depends on how much you like playing off lies
that can be anything from way above your feet to way below, or even then
downhill lies across the slope or vice versa. Get the idea, very few flat
lies. Then of course is the fact that most of the greens are above you and
are very narrow, so you have to have the ability to hold narrow greens way
above your feet.
Throw into the fact that it is usually windy here and you can see why it is
beloved or hated. Still, on this day we had 15 players who went out to test
themselves, and very surprisingly did very well. The course was in pretty
good condition, the greens are always fast and usually true if you can get
up to them. Putting above the hole can be tricky, especially as on this day
when the greens were cut ‘vertically’ so putts were affected depending on
going with the cut or across it.
On this day we were also just on the edge of a weather front so had some
drops of rain and some thunder in the distance.

Friday winner Bob Watson.
Back at Bert’s it was interesting to see
the players were showing such good results. Winner with a gross 72 and 40
points was Bob Watson, ahead of Mick Coghlan with 38 points in second. In
third was Max Scott with 37 points ahead of Nigel Perry with 36 points. In
fifth we had a count back on 35 points that saw Mashi Kaneta fifth ahead of
Mike Gaussa and Barry Oats. T.T.F.N.

Go on the Irish
The Backyard Golf Society
Another very hot day greeted the Backyard boys at Emerald on
Friday, May 3. The recent hot and humid weather is not in any way conducive
to good golf, with players looking to get the game over without expiring and
get back in for cool refreshments.
Anyway, the players braved the conditions and the winner today was Irish
John with 37 points. Near-pin was also won by the Irish man as was last
week’s roll-over.
Skins were well doled out with 5 to Don the Divorcer, 4 to Irish John, 3 to
Golden Trowel’s boyfriend and The Quiet Man (he also won the 2 roll-overs
with a win on hole #1), 2 to Michelle Chatt and 1 rolled over to the next
game.
We said goodbye to Second Hand Bob this week so Dan the Diet Whiskey Man
will need to find a new drinking buddy for midweek sessions in B.C. The
Mummy has been tied up all week with the bent copper society from England
but should be back next week. We welcomed back JJ who has lost 2 stone
recently.
If nothing else the players have all acquired a classic white-sock golfers
tan of late so there is something to celebrate in the hot weather.

Stimpson strikes at Burapha
PSC golf from The Outback Golf Bar
![](pictures/s15golf32-1.jpg)
The visiting 7-player group
from Melbourne, led by Gordon Etheridge (3rd left), pose for a photo.
Monday, April 29, Burapha – Stableford
Twenty-eight Outbackers were at their regular Burapha course to play the B &
D nines from the whites. Capt’ Steve, although still unable to play through
injury, got the field away and by the unexpected benefit of a two-tee start,
everybody was gone by 9.55am.
No report as to the condition of the course this week but one would suspect
it was as good as always, judging by the fine 40pts scored by Geoff Stimpson
to win Div A and also to register the best score of the day. One of the
Aussie visitors from the Melbourne area, Dean Whittaker, was second just one
point back with 39 and a regular Burapha player, Bob Lindborg, took third
after beating Paul Rodgers on count back, both on 36.
Div B strangely didn’t fare so well with 34 being the top score, attained by
both Dave Coller and Pete Stonebridge, with Dave getting the nod on count
back. Andy King was third with 32 and Jimmy Little headed a three-way count
back all on 30, to take the last spot.

(From left): Sel Wegner,
Sydney Coetzer, Jinjo O’Neill, and Joe Mooneyham.
There were four ‘2’s from Greg Hill &
Steve Poznanski on B3, John Cunningham on B8 and Jimmy Little on D8.

2nd Dean Whitaker (15) 39pts
3rd Bob Lindborg (17) 36pts

4th Jimmy Little (19) 30pts
Tuesday, April 30, Khao Kheow – Stableford
Fifteen Outbackers played today, playing A & C nines
at Khao Kheow. Regrettably, it was a bit of a slow start and we had only
managed to get about nine holes completed before the heavens opened up. Some
of us managed to get to a watering hole for a 10 minute break while the rain
eased off and once we were back on the course it started raining again.
7 golfers decided enough was enough and headed back to the locker rooms to
get a shower and have a couple of cold ones while they waited for the rest
of the golfers to finish their game. As is normal with the Outback’s rain
policy, if at least half the field finish, it is declared a tournament.
Due to the rain we didn’t have any fantastic scores except Andy Makara with
a great score of 39 points. Well done Andy.
There were no ‘2’s.
1st Andy Makara (28) 39pts
2nd Suzi Lawton (19) 29pts
3rd Yvonne Baker (28) 27pts
4th Sugar Ray Handford (17) 23pts
Friday, May 3, Green Valley – Stableford
An excellent turnout (for the time of year) of 33
Outbackers at Green Valley today, produced some very solid scoring,
particularly in Div A with nine of the eleven players scoring 30pts or more.
The best came from Peter LeNoury, who always seems to do well here at GV,
amassing 40pts to win Div A by four from Sel Wegner (36) and Joe Mooneyham
(35).
Steve Blazsanyik (Waldo) won Div B with 38pts ahead of one of our Karratha
visitors, Sydney Coetzer (36) and the returning Barry McIntosh in third on
33. Div C went to Jinjo O’Neill with 36, from Suzi Lawton (34), who beat
Andy Makara on count back.
Finally, our thanks again to Capt’ Steve, who orchestrated the start, as
General Jack was supervising the ongoing bar improvements, and also to Suzi
for her help in collecting and collating the cards etc.
There were two ‘2’s from Peter LeNoury and Pete Stonebridge
Div A (0-15)
1st Peter LeNoury (9) 40pts
2nd Sel Wegner (13) 36pts
3rd Joe Mooneyham (15) 35pts

The never ending story
PSC golf from Lewiinski’s Golf Society
Sunday, April 28, Green Valley -
Stableford
A Flight
1st Terry Mangan (13) 36pts
2nd Barry Copestake (15) 36pts
3rd Ed Wyckoff (11) 34pts
B Flight
1st Freddy Starbeck (17) 38pts
2nd John Foote (17) 36pts
3rd Bruce Walters (34) 34pts
Near Pins: No 2 - Thierry Petrement; No 9 - Thierry Petrement; No
12 - Jon Haugen; No 16 - Colin Davethell
Freddy
Starbeck and friend.
The day’s author extends his heartfelt
apologies for the redundant message that is to
follow. Get used to “Freddy the Viking Starbeck wins again.” Freddy
continues to amaze as he was the only player to better par on a red hot
humid day with a 38-point man of the match performance. This fine effort
surely must win the golfer of the month award, on this his first
offering of the week. John Foote showed who wears the pants in the
family as he carded his second silver spot pay day in as many days.
Peter ‘Don Corleone’ Henshaw soon got back into winning ways on his
return from a visit to Ireland as he closed the flight with a count back
victory over the unlucky Bruce Walters.
The flagship flight was a bit at half mast as Terry ‘pork chop’ Mangan
had the better of Barry ‘the boot’ Copestake in a count back. This was
Barry’s second count back loss in as many games but Barry was
unconcerned as he is now a card carrying member of the flagship flight.
Ed Wyckoff rounded out the podium with a count back nod over the not so
unlucky Jon Haugen; not unlucky because Jon was the sole heir to an
extremely healthy 2’s pot.
Monday, April 29, Khao Kheow - Stableford
A Flight
1st Freddy Starbeck (17) 32pts
2nd Terry Mangan (13) 30pts
3rd Lawrie McBride (13) 30pts
B Flight
1st Brian Prudden (20) 40pts
2nd Tom Gorey (22) 33pts
3rd Jim Proctor (22) 33pts
C Flight
1st Marlene Prudden (23) 33pts
2nd Christy Knight (23) 31pts
3rd Lyn Foote (25) 30pts
It was a family affair today as the Prudden family - Brian in B Flight
and Marlene in C Flight -both stood atop their podiums. Brian was also
the only player to better par, no mean feat at Khao Kheow as Brian
carded a masterful 40 points. Ireland’s Tom Gorey took the silver a
distant 7 shots back while Jim Proctor picked up the bronze a further 6
strokes in arrears.
In the C Flight (or is it the ladies flight), Belle Marlene took the
gold with 33 points. Marlene was 2 shots clear of Co. Dublin’s Christine
‘good’ Knight. The bronze spot was filled after a cat-fight as Aussie
Lyn Foote’s back side was adjudged to be in better shape than the
unlucky Esara Duangsri.
The clean up guy Freddy ‘the Viking’ Starbeck struck again in the senior
flight with 33 points. The society’s top two ‘Micks’ filled the flight’s
minor places; Terry ‘pork chop’ Mangan and Lawrie McBride were only
separated by count back with Terry having the better of it.
Freddy Starbeck, Lawrie McBride, Les Cobban and Mike Jeffreys shared the
2’s pot.
Thursday, May 2, Bangpakong - Stableford
A Flight
1st Tore Eliassen (15) 39pts
2nd Jon Haugen (9) 37pts
3rd Les Cobban (10) 37pts
B Flight
1st Freddy Starbeck (17) 42pts
2nd Martin Allard (24) 40pts
3rd Marlene Prudden (23) 35pts
There was our title guy again topping B Flight and the field with a man
of the match 42 excellent points. Freddy was two strokes clear of the
in-form Martin Allard. Marlene ‘the Aussie Belle’ Prudden made sure
Brian’s glass was kept full as she captured the last flight money.
Tore Eliassen returned a solid 39 points to top the premier flight; that
winning score was two clear of the duo of Jon Haugen and Les Cobban. Jon
had the better of the count back to secure the silver, but all was not
lost as Les split the ‘2’s pot with Paddy Jordan.
Friday, May 3, Green Valley - Stableford
1st Freddy Starbeck (17) 38pts
2nd JP Maffray (14) 37pts
3rd Ed Wyckoff (11) 37pts
Freddy ‘the @$#%#@’ Starbeck continued his weekly onslaught as he
climbed to the top of the podium as Sunday’s man of the match win was
followed by Monday’s B Flight win, followed by Thursday’s man of the
match performance and accumulated with today’s 38 point lashing. He left
the lower steps of the podium to be sorted out by count back between JP
Maffray and Ed ‘our man in the Whitehouse’ Wyckoff. JP took the count
back and left Ed to the bronze.
Monsieur Serge Straeten (a brace), JP Maffray and Ed Wyckoff shared the
2’s pot.

Baxter bags victory
with season’s best
Travellers Rest Golf Group
Andy Rich
Another hot and steamy week in downtown Pattaya even had the
locals looking for some shade. With the mercury hitting around the 40
degrees centigrade mark we farangs were finding life difficult enough
just getting through the days without trying to master our golf game as
well.
John
Baxter.
Playing eighteen holes in these
conditions is a real test for the young, fit and healthy so you can just
imagine what it was like most of the older clientele who regularly turn
out for the TRGG. It may explain why some thought better of trying to
play four times a week and cut their outings to just two, heading for
the swimming pool or beach or their air-conditioning instead. Hence
Monday and Friday’s outings being cancelled through lack of numbers.
On Tuesday 30th April we all headed off to Green Valley, which I have to
say was looking magnificent. All the field seemed to be sheltering from
the sun under their golf umbrellas and there was some fetching headwear
on display. Something inspired John Baxter (16) to play what he
described as his best round of golf of the year and returned with 40pts
to take first place.
I think I, Andy Rich (19) was inspired by my very beautiful caddie and
shot my best round for many a month to take second with 36pts. I don’t
know what inspired Craig Hitchens (11) but he took third place with
35pts.
![](pictures/s17TR32-2.jpg)
Jimmy
Cleaver.
On Thursday 2nd May we all braved the
elements and went to do our weekly battle with Phoenix (Ocean and
Mountain courses). Young Jim Cleaver (13), that is his handicap not his
age, managed to keep his game together and took first place with 39pts.
The ever youthful Roger Wilkinson (14) ran up 36pts which was good
enough to take second and that tough old bird Fergus Brennan (12) not to
be outdone slipped into third place with 35pts.
Special mention should go to old Methuselah himself Geoff Wilcox who
played as well as anybody can remember, or at least as well as he can
remember, and managed to finish fourth. He would easily have won overall
if the conditions had not got the better of him about the fourteenth
hole when we had to send for his bath chair.
Good luck to all you golfers for the coming week!

Marvelous Mukesh
Phoenix Members Golf Society
Tuesday winner Mike Gerrard (right)
receives his prize standing next to Kevin Bird.
Mike Gerrard
With a nice comfortable amount of players in the group on Friday,
April 26, we set off on the Mountain/Lake course having to implement
‘lift clean and place’ rules due to storms the previous few days.
However, today proved to be very dry and fresh but also very hot. I
have to admire the courage and stamina of the guys who walk the
course at this time of the year - not for me - I am now in the
comfort time of life!
Winners today in the singles match were Mukesh Thakker (36pts) and
Granville Swanton (35pts), who incidentally both walked the course.
In the team match (we had 3 x 3-ball groups) the same two guys plus
another walker Richard Baldwin won by a mile with an accumulated
best two from three scores to notch up 80 points. They were clear
winners by 9 strokes.
Strangely enough the comfort team (with carts) came a very poor last
with only 70 points.
Near pin prizes went to Richard Baldwin & Granville Swanton with two
others not claimed. These prizes went into the lucky draw and the
winners were Clive Robinson and Kristinn Helgason, with Granville
Swanton winning the free massage ticket and yours truly winning the
free drink ticket.
On Tuesday, April 30, we played the Mountain/Lake course again in
our monthly stroke-play tournament for the Trattoria Italiana
restaurant voucher, donated by our very good friend Giorgio
Baccioli.
Playing stroke-play always sorts out, as we say, the men from the
boys. After three months of very poor scores yours truly started the
day off well. Then the wheels fell off on the fourth par three with
a quadruple bogey 7. However, I went on to grab a couple of birdies
and few pars to finish on only one over handicap with a net 73 to
win the day by two shots from three other players all on net 75.
They were Kevin Bird (2nd), Kristinn Helgason (3rd), and Mukesh
Thakker who was just edged out into fourth place on count back.
Near pin winners today were Mukesh Thakker (2) & Kevin Bird. The
fourth near pin was not won and that prize was entered into the
lucky draw prize list of items which for the most part are donated
by our hosts The Relax Bar at Ban Amphur. These went to Tim Mason,
Jim Neilson, Peter Harris, newcomer Roy Dean, and Gerry Hughes.
It now seems certain that at last Phoenix Golf Club has been bought
up by new owners and already some greatly improved scenery work has
taken place on both the entrance to the club and certain areas on
the course. The roof of the clubhouse has had a new coat of paint
and if you could not see it in the distance before, you will now.
We, as members, are still waiting for a statement as to the future
policy of the new owners. I think most feel confident that all will
be for the good.

Hookey wins Silky Oak shoot-out
IPGC Pattaya Golf Society at Rabbi’s Elephant Bar
On Monday, 29th April the Pattaya Golf Society visited the
enigmatic course at Silky Oak to play a stableford “shootout” between some
of the group’s keenest golfers. Like it or loathe it the course is an
excellent challenge to golfers with its expanses of water and hidden flags.
The course was empty and in excellent condition with every fairway taking a
good divot but the greens were slower than were expected. It was
“millionaires’” golf as no-one else was in sight all day and the group had
the course to themselves.
After nine holes Aussie warhorse Garry Hookey held the most slender of
leads, one point ahead of Mr Len with Mike Wilsher within touching distance
further back. Garry’s consistency held on the back nine as Mr Len’s improved
driving took a back seat for a couple of holes but he eventually
rediscovered his rhythm to finish par - par and end with 30 points. Garry
took the pot with a thirty four point total.
To the victor the spoils and in the clubhouse the spoils were lavishly spent
on refreshments for all. It had been the most pleasant of golf days on a
fine course, in good weather and in the splendidly warm company of old
friends. We’ll take some convincing that Pattaya has a better day on offer!
Taylor’s fine form continues
On Labour Day, 1st May, the Pattaya Golf Society left a
steamy Soi Buakhao and travelled to Crystal Bay to play a stableford
competition on the A and B nines, which were in fine order with pacy greens.
The course was full and a five hour round was inevitable as Koreans,
Japanese and Thais populated the course with the usual large playing groups.
The course has a history of producing good scores and this day was not to
disappoint. In third place the returning Finn Erik Anttonen posted 35 points
to share third place with Brian Talbot and rookie Wayne Morrison whilst
Peter Ditz enjoyed his final round this trip with an excellent 38 point card
for second. The winner was Aussie Robbie Taylor with 41 points, coming hard
on the heels of a couple of very fine performances recently.
The ‘2’s pot was shared by Andrew Purdie, Robbie Taylor, Alan Flynn and
Wayne Morrison (two) and the Booby Bevy went to the Rabbi after a shank the
likes of which his playing partners had never seen before, catapulting the
ball and tee marker yards away at right angles towards the cart path on B6.
The free beer draw was won by Dave Plaiter.
Crystal Bay had once again proved a winner in all respects, a fine course, a
good holiday rate and some splendid golf.
Purdie wins tight affair
The golf week ended for the Pattaya Golf Society on Friday,
3rd May with a trip to Greenwood to play a stableford competition on the C
and A nines, which were generally in good order except for some sanded and
uneven greens on the front nine. The weather was a concern with heavy
thunder clouds ever present but the group managed to get away with it
despite the high humidity.
The single flight was treated to some very closely fought golf with Brian
Talbot making his final appearance this trip with 34 points for third place.
One ahead were Jim Proctor and Alan Flynn on 35 whilst the day was bossed by
Andrew Purdie, also making his swansong this trip, with 36 points.
There were no birdie ‘2’s and “gaffer” for the day John Mason earned the
Booby Bevy after a promising front nine turned into a nightmare on the back
giving him split figures of 17 and 7. Rabbi’s free beer draw was won by
Larry Ang and there could not be a more deserving winner after all the
logistical help he offers every golf day. And so the golf week ended with
the PGS.

Allen & Vincent take the Medals
IPGC golf from The Haven
Monday, April 22, Bangpra - Stableford
CSS 72
1st Allen Raaen (9) 34pts
2nd Trevor Schirmer (15) 33pts
3rd Benny Hansen (25) 30pts
Allen
Raaen.
Allen Raaen played very solidly to win a closely fought
round with Trevor Schirmer, showing that he is really recovering well from
his knee surgery in second place, and Benny Hansen returning to take a well
earned third spot on a course that is always in great shape but needs to be
respected when approaching the greens. Any misdirected shot to the wrong
part of the green can mean a three-putt or even worse.
There were no 2’s today in either division.
There were welcome backs for Benny Hansen, Jan Deenoi, Peter Newham and
Murray Frost.
Wednesday, April 24, Treasure Hill - Stableford
CSS 72
1st Trevor Schirmer (15) 35pts
2nd Terry Hodgkiss (23) 33pts
3rd Markku Tynell (25) 25pts
Treasure Hill was once again a pleasure to play with the general condition
superb and the greens as usual fast and true, although the strong wind made
for difficult conditions and worse than usual results from this popular
course.
![](pictures/s20Haven2.jpg)
Vincent Gras.
Trevor Schirmer took yet another podium position with a
solid round of one over handicap, with Terry Hodgkiss taking second two
points back.
Once again there were no 2’s in the first division but surprisingly, under
the very difficult conditions, there were two in the second division as both
Mike Hill and Hal Hart slipped one in each.
Friday, April 26, Eastern Star - Monthly Medal
Division 1 (white tees)
CSS 73
1st Allen Raaen (9) net 77
2nd Trevor Schirmer (15) net 80
Division 2 (yellow tees)
CSS 73
1st Vincent Gras (19) net 69
2nd Terry Hodgkiss (23) net 79
Following the recent changes at Phoenix, the groups were unable to take up
the usual venue for the Monthly Medals and the competitions were then held
at Eastern Star where the conditions were found to have improved compared
with a few months previously.
Allen Raaen booked his place in the end of year Gold and Silver competitions
in the first division with a less than sparkling round but one that was good
enough by three to see off the challenge of the in-form Trevor Schirmer in
second place.
Vincent Gras continued with his fine form, following his renewed interest in
Pattaya and golf which has seen him regularly appear on the podium, as he
left the rest of the second division trailing in his wake with a stunning
three under handicap return. Terry Hodgkiss settled for a very creditable
second place some ten shots behind but well in front of the rest of the
pack.
On a difficult day for almost everyone nobody had a ‘2’ and there were
precious few threes either in either division.
Back at The Haven there was a farewell for George Pittam.
Monday, April 29, Khao Kheow (yellow tees) – Stableford
CSS 71
1st Markku Tynell (25) 34pts
2nd Trevor Schirmer (15) 34pts
3rd Vincent Gras (19) 31pts
Khao Kheow is one of the favoured regular courses that are to be scheduled
twice a month during the low season in consideration of its general
condition, ambience and cost of play. Once again the players were not
disappointed in every aspect of the day with the course in great condition
although the pin placements and the wind made for lower than normal
Stableford scoring.
Markku Tynell at last reached the top of the list with a solid round that
got better as it progressed and thus won the count back with an excellent 22
points as the ever-present Trevor Schirmer could muster only a solid 18 for
second place. Vincent Gras showed well, even though his score did not quite
reflect the better parts of his game, as he took third.
Trevor Schirmer at last took the first division 2’s pool that included
several rollovers whilst Markku Tynell added to his day’s haul with the only
one in the second division.
Prior to the presentations there was a welcome back for Jamie King.
Wednesday, May 1, Mountain Shadow - Stableford
CSS 75 NC
1st Trevor Schirmer (15) 32pts
2nd Allen Raaen (9) 31pts
3rd Vincent Gras (19) 30pts
4th Markku Tynell (25) 25pts
May Day Bank Holiday at most courses means total sell out and Mountain
Shadow was no exception with the car park full when the hopefuls arrived.
After much coming and going amongst the caddies and caddy master it seemed
for a short while that it was going to be another holiday nightmare. But
these fears were soon allayed as within five minutes of the allotted tee
time the first group was away followed by the rest of the competition and
the rounds went as quickly and as smoothly as on any other non-holiday day.
Playing from the blue tees, Trevor Schirmer led in the group with a round
that had been painstakingly built as the greens were found to be as hard as
usual with too many three-putts thrown into the mix.
Allen Raaen was again in contention but also missed to many on the greens
after good play off the tees so he settled for second on the day, with
Vincent Gras another of the usual suspects together with Markku Tynell in
third and fourth respectively.
There were no 2’s in the second division but Allen Raaen had one in the
first division to scoop the pot.
Before the presentations were made there were welcomes for new members Perry
Attfield, who had been unable to complete the round due to a back injury,
and Arthur Barbara.
Friday, May 3, Greenwood - Stableford
CSS 71
1st Vincent Gras (19) 40pts
2nd Trevor Schirmer (15) 38pts
3rd Darryl Kellett (16) 37pts
4th Hal Hart (22) 35pts
5th Terry Hodgkiss (23) 35pts
It is always a pleasure to travel up the 331 to the furthest regular course
that is played by the group as it is also one of the favoured group of
courses, to be played twice a month, with a management that is only too
pleased to find ways to improve the relationships between themselves and the
paying public. Added to this, the course is one of the best designed for the
average golfer and unlike some other courses built by the same course
designers it has not been altered to its detriment.
Vincent Gras again showed his potential as he went four under handicap to
win against stiff competition as at last the weather was in the players
favour with only light winds and clear skies and the high scores meant that
the CSS for the day reduced to 71.
Once again Trevor Schirmer stood on the podium, with a score that will
ensure that his handicap will be reduced, in second spot one ahead of Darryl
Kellett in third. The extra numbers turning out meant a fourth place for Hal
Hart after he won a count back over Terry Hodgkiss, in fifth, with 21 to 14
as Terry unfortunately had his 21 points on the front nine.
There were no 2’s in the first division but Vincent Gras and Terry Hodgkiss
shared the second division roll over pool.
Back at The Haven there were welcome backs for Darryl Kellett and Rusty
Barfield and farewells for Vincent Gras, Peter Newham and Murray Frost.
Note: If you would like to play with The Haven group, you can contact mobile
082 219 0965 or call in to The Haven Hotel, at 185 Soi 13, between Beach
Road and 2nd Road. All transportation to the course is arranged and you do
not need to sign up prior to the day, but you should be there by 8.15 on
Monday, Wednesday, and Friday on the days that you wish to play. A schedule
of courses to be played can be found on our web site at

prizes from Bob Newell.
Thursday, May 2,
Green Valley – 2-Man Better-Ball
1st Terry Mangan & Ed Junger 51pts
2nd Eddy Beilby & Peter LeNoury 50pts
3rd Chaten Patel & Barry Copestake 49pts

Its official, the Players Lounge is now open and Pattaya’s new golfing
outlet kicked off with a two-man better ball at Green Valley, followed
by a buffet and karaoke night at the club premises on Soi Wat Sutthawas
near to and on the same side of the soi as the Courtyard Pub.
The scoring was of an excellent standard as GM ‘Broad more’ Bob and
Simon Philbrook teamed up to take the fourth place with a 47-point
return. The pairing of Chaten ‘the Rajah’ Patel and Barry ‘the boot’
Copestake put together a very useful 49 to take the bronze, this was a
shot adrift of runners up Eddy ‘the Eagle’ Beilby and Peter ‘the Right
Honorable’ LeNoury with a superb 50 points. Terry Mangan, along with his
good friend Ed Junger, celebrated Terry’s birthday in style as they took
the days honours with a fantastic 51 points.
The GM thanked everyone that took part for making it a great success and
said a special thanks for all the hard work put in by the staff.

2nd Jim Bell (16) 38pts
3rd Bob Newell 34pts
The inaugural ‘Saturday Bash’ at Green Valley attracted a small but
talented field and a couple of familiar names. Aberdeen’s favourite son
Mark Wood and ‘Broad more’ Bob used their coarse knowledge to navigate
to first and third respectively. Sitting betwixt them and clutching the
silver was Aussie Jimmy ‘AK47’ Bell who was but one stroke shy of the
top spot.
Bob Newell was sole heir to the ‘2’s pot.
Note: The Players Lounge will be playing golf competitions on Tuesdays,
Thursdays and Saturdays and also a monthly medal comp. If you want a
game with us, the sign-up sheets are in the bar or otherwise give Bob a
call on 080 096 8232.

Rogers rules
PSC golf from The Golf Club
![](pictures/s22Golf32-1.jpg)
Alan Rothwell, Michael
Whelan, Golf Captain Phil Smedley and Dean Whitaker.
Steve Ellison
Monday, April 22, Green Valley (white tees) - Stableford
T1st Peter Rogers (23) 40pts
T1st Frank Riley (18) 40pts
2nd Alan Rothwell (6) 39pts
3rd Ken Aihara (4) 38pts
Peter Rogers is on fire! For the last few weeks, Peter has seen his game
turn around and is scoring consistently well. Today his 40 points tied with
Frank Riley to share the win. Frank has also been in the “Purple Patch” and
did very well up in Khao Yai at our Songkran trip.
The recently departed (as in he’s gone back to the States) Alan Rothwell,
who plays a great game off 6, took second and Ken “Mr. Up & Down” Aihara had
a good day shooting 38 points off his new 4-stoke handicap. Have a good trip
back Alan!
As we are all aware, any golf course must do regular maintenance, especially
on the greens, and Green Valley is no exception. This is the time of year to
expect coring, sanding and verticut procedures for the well-being of the
course, so get over it, it has to be done. The course still played well as
ever and by the time you read this, it will be back to its regular fine
condition.
Wednesday, April 24, Bangpra (white tees) - Stableford
1st Peter Rogers (23) 29pts
2nd Eddie Beilby (18) 26pts
3rd Don Lehmer (5) 23pts
Do you believe those scores? I just wanted to clarify that the above scores
are not a typo and ‘Dandy’ Don Lehmer got to the podium with just 23 points!
Ya never know how it’s going to go in this crazy game.
![](pictures/s22Golf32-2.jpg)
Good Luck to our mates on the
‘Darkside’ with The Players Lounge.
It was also good to see our old pal Eddie Beilby joining
us again and posted 26 points, which in retrospect was a decent tally on the
day. I guess that’s why they call him “Captain Fantastic”!
The story of the day once again was the winning round of our Monday
co-winner, Peter Rogers. It was a tough ol’ slog out at Bangpra today, and
his 29 Stableford points were head and shoulders above the rest.
It’s always fun to take newbies out to Bangpra, as the après-golf table talk
will eventually turn to the toilets and what a nifty invention the Japanese
have come up with.
With 2 wins for Peter so far this week, we were all wondering if he would
have a hat trick on Friday.
Friday, April 26, Crystal Bay A & B (white tees) – Monthly
Medal
1st Dean Whitaker (15) net 67
2nd Michael Whelan (14) net 67
3rd Mark Wood (8) net 70
4th Alan Rothwell (6) net 70
Time once again for our Monthly Medal and the venue was Crystal Bay, the
former Natural Park Resort. This is a course that doesn’t get the credit it
deserves for being a really nice and playable 27-hole track. Designed by
Thai Takenaka, it is a lovely layout cut through swaying palm trees all
around the course and is the sister course to Mountain Shadow. You can
always remember this golf course by the three tall white condo buildings
towering over you.
Dean Whitaker is visiting us from Australia and played well here today. He
tied with Michael Whelan but won on count back to take victory on the day,
and of course the TGC Monthly Medal winners Antigua shirt.
Regular Mark Wood was just off the airplane from Vietnam so not at his top
form, but managed a solid 70, as did Alan Rothwell who finishes his tour of
Pattaya also with a 70 on the day. Thanks guys for joining us for another
great week of golf in the kingdom.
Monday, April 29, Green Valley (white tees) – Stableford
T1st Paul Greenaway (8) 41pts
T1st Henry O’Brien (21) 41pts
T2nd Grant Cadell (14) 39pts
T2nd Jeff Cordeiro (9) 39pts
“I spent a lot of money on birds, booze and fast cars. The rest I just
squandered,” as George Best famously spoke. These days, we spend our money
on green fees, caddies and fast golf carts, with little left to squander. We
have seen the pound and dollar stage a bit of a comeback of late, and you
can now walk up to the exchange counter here in Pattaya and get 45.5 baht to
your Pound Sterling, so things are at least trending positive here.
Today was another fine Monday outing at Green Valley with Paul Greenaway and
Henry O’Brien sharing the win on 41 points. Second was also a shared
position with “Man of the Mountain” from Khao Yai, Grant Cadell, and Jeff
Cordeiro both shooting 39.
Tuesday, April 30, Khao Kheow A & C (white tees) - Stableford
1st Ken Aihara (3) 35pts
2nd Ben Denham (3) 28pts
3rd Taro Mochida (13) 23pts
Ken is at it again, but this time playing off 3! Great shooting to our Mr.
Up and Down as Ben Denham was in the middle of a Japanese 1st and 3rd with
Taro Mochida getting away with a 23 point third place. You just never know!
Thursday, May 2, Burapha A & C (white tees) – Stableford
1st- Henry O’Brien (21) 38pts
2nd Alain Peshlerbe (14) 37pts
3rd Ken Aihara (3) 35pts
Kudos goes to Henry O’Brien today for his 38 points on this lovely but
difficult course. Visiting Frenchman Alain Pelsherbe had one of his best
rounds in Pattaya and was rewarded with a fine 37 for his first time at
Burapha, and of course it’s Ken again with a respectable 35.
Everyone loved the course and condition was great. Thanks for joining us for
this week’s golf at T.G.C.

Kari returns to form with win at Navy
Jomtien Golf with the IPGC
Monday, April 29, Bangpra - Stableford
This was our first visit here in six months - due to the very late tee-time
we are allocated in the high season which was not acceptable to any of us -
and today there was a good turnout. There were three divisions penned in the
night before but with a late cancellation we dropped to 31 players so only
two divisions out today.
![](pictures/s23Jomtien32.jpg)
Sharpshooters Bob and Jon
Poole.
Everyone enjoyed the day back here again and there were some very slick
greens with a few nightmare pin placements. There was a wide difference in
the two top scores in the two groups today with Chris Voller scoring 20 on
the front nine and coming in winning division 1 with 38 points. Jerry
Sweetnam was second one point behind Chris and in third place was Duane
Borgford on 36.
Odd Holm Hansen’s 31 points topped division 2 scores with Andy Oz in second
place on 30 and a 16/14/14/11 back nine count back saw Gordon Everingham
come in third after beating Rod Howett, Jean Morel and Bryan Rought, all on
29 points.
Near pins were won by Don Head, Kari Kuparinen, Jerry sweetnam (2), Gus
Gaskin and Burnie Sinclair.
Jerry Sweetnam birdied the second and twelfth holes to take the ‘2’s pot in
division 1 and ‘count back’ Burnie won the rollover in the second division
after a ‘2’ on the twelfth as well.
Wednesday, May 1, Eastern Star - Stableford
It was a Public Holiday so we switched from our normal Friday game and were
at Eastern Star today. Two divisions went out with the cut set at 5-15 and
16 plus and the best score of the day, winning division 1, came from Marty
Rock with 35 points. Back to see his Dad for three weeks, the Bristol boy
Jon Poole, playing off 12, took second place with 32 points, beating Bill
Bertram on a 19/17 back nine count back.
Frank Kelly was the winner in division 2 with 34 points and Iain Walsh beat
Karl Flood on a 18/13 count back for second after they both came in with 32.
It was another very hot day out there and a few people were suffering yet
again after the round.
Near pins went to Marty Rock, Jerry Sweetnam, Keith Wolley, and Paul Hartley
(2).
There were no ‘2’s recorded on the day.
Friday, May 3, Plutaluang - Stableford
We were playing the West and North courses today and the equal cut was 6-17
and 18+ in the 2 divisions. Our impetuous group teed off thirty minutes
ahead of schedule on a day that was slightly cooler than it has been over
the past week or so.
With his best round for a long time, Kari Aarnio topped the podium in
division 2 with 39 points. In second place with his highest score for a
while was John Harvey with 36 and Ray Gott took third on 33.
There were lower scores in division 1 with Lindsay Phillips winning with 34
after beating the Welsh boy Curtis Hessler on a 17/16 count back. Jean Morel
was third after he beat Marty Rock on a 19/15 count back, both on 32 points.
Near pin prizes were won by Jean Morel, Jon Poole, Bryan Rought, Chris
Voller, Gordon Everingham, Bob Poole, Chris Reed and Iain Walsh.
Once again there were no ‘2’s in either division.

Morris has the
winning numbers
PSC golf from Café Kronborg
Monday, April 29, Pleasant Valley –
Stableford
It was off to Pleasant Valley today for a very pleasant day of golf - up
route 7 for a quick 38 minutes and all checked-in we got off the first tee
36 minutes early under sunny skies and in hot/humid conditions, with a
threat of a storm towards the finish.
The course was in fine condition but wet from rain the day before. We had a
quick round of 4 hours with welcomes to Wanta Dacha, Mark O’Callighan and
Alan Suril, and a goodbye to Niels Hansen until the high season.
One flight today as we had low season numbers and Ted Morris was the winner
on a count back over Jan Lovgreen in second and Wanta Dacha third, all on 39
points. Mark O’Callaghan took fourth with 38 points.
1st Ted Morris (12) 39pts
2nd Jan Lovgreen (20) 39pts
3rd Wanta Dacha (9) 39pts
4th Mark O’Callaghan (19) 38pts
Note: The sign-up sheet is now up in the Cafe Kronborg for the Papa Ray
Rogers Memorial Birthday Scramble on the 16th May at Plutaluang, with food
and prizes back at the house. Entry is THB500 per golfer.

Griffin gets the gold
PSC golf from The Bunker Boys @ The Ranch
Monday, April 29, Phoenix (Mountain & Lake) - Medal
Only 10 players today, so we had some problems when we checked in
because the discounted PSC rate at Phoenix is only for 20 players or
more. Fortunately we have some Phoenix members in the group, so everyone
was able to register as member’s guests at the same rate.
Neil
Griffin.
The weather was hot, with rain in the forecast, but none
appeared and even a very welcome cooling breeze arrived for the last
three holes.
The course was in good shape as usual, but the pace of the greens were
difficult to read, as they appear to be getting more grainy, making
downhill putts with the grain very fast, and uphill putts against the
grain, very slow. The greens can’t be blamed for the poor scores on the
day however, with William Macey taking the honours with a modest score
of net 75, ahead of Mashi Kaneta on a count back.
1st William Macey (20) net 75
2nd Mashi Kaneta (15) net 75
3rd Kenny Chung (25) net 76
Near Pins: Tony Robbins and Steve Durey
Wednesday, May 1, Eastern Star – Stableford
Another public holiday today, and we were forced
to make a late change in venue, because Treasure Hill decided to
increase the green fee from 1,400 Baht to 2,000 Baht when we
re-confirmed our booking a couple of days prior. It’s difficult to
understand the mentality of the management in pulling a stunt like that,
but needless to say, we cancelled on the spot and made an alternative
booking at Eastern Star, taking advantage of their special promotion,
with a holiday green fee of 850 Baht.
We hadn’t played Eastern Star since mid-February when some of the greens
were in a terrible state, but it seemed a better option than submitting
to the Treasure Hill extortion. In the event the course was as good as
anyone could remember, with the greens fully recovered, although as
always, a bit on the slow side. There was a shortage of buggies when we
checked in, but surprisingly the course was quiet, and the round
progressed smoothly.
There was no logical reason for the low scores on the day, and Reg
Smart’s winning total of 29 points was the lowest winning score that
your scribe can remember in Bunker Boys recent history - the less said
about the other scores, the better!
It turned out to be a good day for the small group that played, the
weather was great, the course was good if a little scruffy in places,
and all in all well worth the hassle of changing venues. Thanks to Tony
Robbins for sorting out that little problem for us.
1st Reg Smart (30) 29pts
2nd Ken Davidson (23) 27pts
3rd Tony Robbins (13) 24pts
Near Pins: Tony Robbins.
Friday, May 3, Khao Kheow (A & C) – Stableford
A bright sunny morning at Khao Kheow, but there was an
ominous black cloud looming, which seemed to follow us for the first few
holes, eventually catching us on the 7th. A thirty minute rain delay was
necessary, but the skies soon brightened up again, and the round was
still completed in under four and a half hours.
The course was in good shape, but the greens on the A nine were slow,
whilst those on C were much quicker, which caused some problems.
No problems though for Neil Griffin, who romped home with 41 points,
seven points clear of his nearest challenger. His mate Skinny will be
worried when he reads this in the U.K., and no doubt the beer bets will
be off when he returns.
Charles Cunningham came in second place, despite only scoring six points
on the last six holes, and Tony Robbins was third scoring 18 points on
the inward nine.
There was an interesting race for the wooden spoon today, with Peter
Habgood taking the prize (four points on the back nine) ahead of (or
behind?) Ken Davidson (seven points on the back nine).
1st Neil Griffin (25) 41pts
2nd Charles Cunningham (18) 34pts
3rd Tony Robbins (13) 32pts
Near Pins: Charles Cunningham, PJ Redmond and Tony Robbins.
Note: The Bunker Boys are a PSC affiliated golf society, who now play
out of The Ranch bar on Pattaya 3rd Road (in front of the fire station,
and almost opposite the Buffalo Bar). We play three times per week on

friendly but competitive golf competition why not come and join us.
We meet at The Ranch at 9 a.m. for breakfast and transportation, and new

Maddox claims the booty
at Treasure Hill
Golf from the Billabong Bar Golf Society
Monday, April 29, Treasure Hill - Stableford
It was up 331 to Treasure Hill today for our Monday challenge. This course is in
fantastic condition at the moment but we were almost the only ones playing -
maybe it has something to do with the price being 200 baht more than the high
season price, strange indeed.
However, we all got round in under four hours and missed any rain that
threatened towards the latter part of the round. It was very hot in some places
as well.
For a change there were three ‘2’s recorded today, a brace from Lloyd
Shuttleworth and one from Brian Maddox, a 35-foot snake but it went in.
Brian also won the day with 37 points, closely followed by Lloyd on 36 then
Stuart Banks coming in third with 32. From there it went all the way down to a
lowly 18. There were a few of us who couldn’t handle the slippery greens and we
are sure the green-keeper was hiding behind some trees to watch the antics and
groans from the golfers who kept 3 and 4-putting.
Wednesday, May 1, Plutaluang - Stableford
It was the captain’s knock today with our changed venue at Plutaluang East and
South. As the price went up for May Day at our regular venue Green Valley the
lads decided to play somewhere else, and the Capt thought that was a good idea
as you will see by his score.
This course has had that much money spent on it and the condition of it is
fantastic, although it was bedlam when we got there with no caddies and no
carts, but with a little perseverance and patience we got away on time, albeit
with some sharing carts and caddies. It was a 5-hour round but with a bottle of
Thai whiskey to keep the cockles moving it made the day alright.
We welcomed Sel Wegner, Eddie O’Neill, Joe Tynan and John White to the Billabong
today and farewelled Cottee as he is going home for a few weeks to see the
family.
The score’s were very good with only a few not managing to beat 30 points
barrier. There were three ‘2’s recorded today coming from Bob Pearce, Wayne
Cotterell and Steve Croy, who got the first birdie of his career as a budding
professional golfer playing off his 31 handicap.
In the winner’s circle coming in third with 36 points on a count back over Chris
Dodd was George Barrie. Second place was claimed by Sel Wegner with 39 points
and first was Bob Philp with 41 points even though he three-putted six of the
last nine holes.
Friday, May 3,
The Emerald - Stableford
Emerald today and apart from some dead patches in the fairways and the greens
having been scarified, it was in grand condition. The day threatened rain but it
was all thunder and a little wind which helped get rid of some of the heat that
was oppressive at times.
With three groups we got around in under 4 hours. Again there were no ‘2’s
recorded although there were a few lip outs but alas they don’t count.
Taking third place on a count back was Lloyd Shuttleworth with 37 points from
George Barrie also 37 - hard luck mate, but you got the nod the other day. In
second was Peter Shuttleworth also on a count back with 40 points, getting 22 of
them on the back nine, but Owen Walkley took the winner’s prize with 40 points
and 23 on the back nine, a fine score indeed from both players.
Note: If you are looking for a game with some friendly golfers, give Bob a call
on 082 204 3411 or call into the bar for a cold beer and put your name on the
sheet. Turn left at the arch on Siam Country Club Road and we are 200 yards on
the right.

Golfnutter: Dropgate – Masters Humbled
![](pictures/s28Golfnutter32.jpg)
Welcome to Golfnutter’s Blog – a weekly commentary highlighting contemporary
golfing issues, in Pattaya and beyond. For more on matters golf, especially
Pattaya golf, visitgolfnutter.wordpress.com.
It had to happen. The guardians of golf’s Rules could not allow the furore that
surrounded Tiger’s infamous drop to pass without clarification. Nor do they wish
any future rules committee to take the Masters use of Rule 33-7 as a precedent.
The furore referred to is the action taken by Augusta National’s Rules
Committee, in acting the way they did, over the much-reported incident involving
Tiger Woods’ illegal drop during the second round of this year’s Masters
Tournament.
In a joint statement released last week, the R&A and USGA said that the Masters
Rules Committee, in choosing to apply Rule 33-7; ([a] penalty of
disqualification may in exceptional individual cases be waived, modified or
imposed if the Committee considers such action warranted.) used it in a manner
for which it was not intended. “Such discretion,” said the statement “is not
intended to protect a competitor from the consequences of his erroneous
application of the Rules. The fact that Woods, when he returned his score card,
was not aware that he had incurred a two-stroke penalty on the 15th hole was not
a basis to waive disqualification under Rule 33-7.”
The statement also noted, “Viewing the incident solely from the standpoint of
Woods’ actions, there was no basis to waive the penalty of disqualification
under Rule 6-6d.”
The basis for the Masters Rules Committee to exercise its discretionary powers
under Rule 33-7 was, in the view of the joint statement, due to the consequences
of the Committee’s own actions. This refers to their decision not to act on the
advice offered by a TV viewer, whose phone call first alerted them to Woods’s
infringement.
This in itself raises questions, especially so now that the viewer’s identity
has been revealed. It turns out he is David Eger, a playing member of the
Champions Tour. More importantly, before joining the senior circuit, Eger had a
long career as a tournament director with both the PGA Tour and the USGA. Not
only is Eger known to members of the Masters Rules Committee, but is one of the
most experienced tournament officials in US golf and a recognised expert on the
Rules. Surely that should have alerted Masters Rules Committee Chairman Fred
Ridley and his committee colleagues to the seriousness of the situation?
Notwithstanding their incompetence, the Masters Rules Committee was partly
absolved by the joint statement when it noted; “Given the unusual combination of
facts – as well as the fact that nothing in the existing Rules or Decisions
specifically addressed such circumstances of simultaneous competitor error and
Committee error – the Committee reasonably exercised its discretion under Rule
33-7 to waive the penalty of disqualification under Rule 6-6d, while still
penalizing Woods two strokes under Rules 26-1a and 20-7c for playing from a
wrong place.”
So, have golf’s ruling bodies been undeservedly kind to Augusta National by
saying they “reasonably exercised discretion under Rule 33-7?” It’s hard to be
certain but one thing is for sure; the application of Rule 33-7 as used at this
year’s Masters will never be repeated. The statement, viewable in full on either
organisation’s website, makes that very clear. A precedent it is not.
Augusta National is one of the world’s most exclusive private clubs. They are
what they are – an elite golf club that caters for extremely wealthy gentlemen
and two ladies. From 1934 they have run their own golf tournament, the one we
know as the Masters. That this has evolved into one of golf’s most enduring
events has a lot to do with the wonderful setting around which the tournament is
played. But top golf administration, especially of the majors, needs a degree of
competence that club members – and that includes Augusta – serving as amateur
rules officials, struggle to provide.
Perhaps now the club will act on a long-standing plea to appoint professional
referees, not only to run the rules committee, but also to accompany playing
groups inside the ropes. These two measures would assist in bringing management
of the Masters more into line with other majors. Such “innovations” may also
mean the tournament no longer being viewed among rules officials as “an accident
waiting to happen.”
Tiger Woods finished in a tie for fourth, just four shots off the score needed
to enter the play-off. He won US$352,000 in prize money. That he pocketed this
was down to the most fortunate of incidences – the chance intervention of a TV
viewer. Now, imagine the outcry if he had won?
I wonder how many involved in the game, whether top administrators or just
humble hackers like me, are finding difficulty supressing a certain feeling of
schadenfreude?
Happy golfing!

Pongsapat Pumyam wins
Thailand Optimist National Championships
![](pictures/s30-Optimist1.jpg)
Pongsapat Pumyam – the 2013
Thailand Optimist National Champion.
The 2013 Thailand Optimist National Championships presented
by Sansiri, part of this year’s Top of The Gulf Regatta, came to a close Monday
with a fitting last race grandstand finale. Held over three days at Ocean Marina
Yacht Club in Pattaya, 128 Thai and international youngsters lined up this year
in what was a record fleet, with sailors from Singapore, Hong Kong, India,
Indonesia and Thailand taking part.
Thirty-eight years ago, the Yacht Racing Association of Thailand (YRAT) started
Junior Sailing, a programme to encourage and train young Thai sailors and send
them to compete in international sailing events in 1976 and followed that in the
same year with what was then called the Optimist Thailand Championship Cup.
Known today as the Thailand Optimist National Championships, they are as
competitive and as desired as ever, with many leading Thai juniors,
international teams and world champions competing for the title.
![](pictures/s30-Optimist2.jpg)
Kamonchanok Klahan finished
second overall and was the best placed girl in the competition.
The Championships are the second oldest annual sailing event in Thailand and
continue to develop youth talent and introduce more Thai youngsters to the sport
of sailing. The proof of this was seen on the water over the last three days
with some close racing in challenging conditions and an exceptionally high level
of sailing.
Going into the last race of the last day, the title was within Thai youngster
Suthon Yampinid’s grasp. Having placed in the top five throughout, it was his to
lose, and lose it he did with a ninth in the penultimate race and a tenth in the
final race, dropping him to third overall and missing out on second place by a
single one point.

Class winners Sittisart Ponpun
and Peerapol Wisaka (right) lead the double-handed monohull dinghy fleet
downwind.
Having only sailed one race on Day 2 due to a storm followed by fickle winds,
there were three races on the last day, making the series a total of seven,
which proved critical to the overall positioning.
Despite Pongsapat Pumyam placing 27th in the penultimate race, which he could
drop from his scoresheet, the 14-year old Thai junior had been finishing high in
the standings throughout. He went on to finish the series in style with a first
place in the last race to take the overall title and be crowned 2013 Thailand
Optimist National Champion.
Second place went to Thai girl Kamonchanok Klahan, who was also top placed girl.
Third overall went to Suthon Yampinid.
Second for the girls was Sutida Poonpat, relative of 2010 World Optimist
Champion Noppakao Poonpat, who is another future Thai sailing talent. Third
girls overall went to Praewa Kangkla.
The dinghy and beach catamaran fleets, a spectacular sight and large part of
what makes the TOG Regatta so special, finished their three-day series on Monday
also, and after a storm and fickle winds Sunday which caused havoc amongst the
fleet, things were back to normal with three races across all classes.
The strong winds on Day 2 left damage in its wake with a depleted fleet making
the start line on the final day in the Formula 18 and Open Beach Multihull
classes. In Formula 18, Pom Green/ Apple, sailing the new Olympic Nacra 17,
dropped their final race score (a second place) to finish with an undefeated
scoresheet. Michael Scantlebury/ David Harris placed second overall with Morten
Jakobsen/ Florten Herson in third.

Keerati Bualong gave a sailing
masterclass in the single-handed monohull dinghy event.
There were no surprises on the final day of racing in the Open Beach Multihull
class – three more bullets meant Damrongsak/ Sakda Vongtim were undefeated over
the eight race series, followed by Grahame Southwick/ Khaipho second overall,
and Teerapong Watiboonruang/ Passuree Sompalasin third.
An uncharacteristic ninth place finish for Keerati Bualong in the last
single-handed monohull dinghy class race Sunday was a mere blip on his
scoresheet. Three first place finishes on Monday saw him easily win the class
with Natthawut Paenyaem in second eight points behind, and Supakon Pongwichean
third.
Threatening to make the podium in the double-handed monohull dinghy class was
2010 World Optimist Champion, Noppakao Poonpat, and sailing partner Panida
Suksomporn. However a 7,3,7 list of finishes on Monday put paid to that. The
class honours went to Sittisart Ponpun/ Peerapol Wisaka with three wins on the
final day. Totsapon Mahawichean/ Chaichanamwut Deenak finished second and
Malaysian team Mohd Faizal Norizan/ Ahmad Shukri Abd. Azi were third.
Note: A comprehensive round-up of the 2013 Top of The Gulf Regatta, including
results of all the other classes not mentioned here, will feature in next week’s
Pattaya Mail.

the ‘Dolphins’ eighth consecutive reversal since their only win of the campaign
so far, which came on the opening day of the season
The only goal of the game came in the 89th minute when TOT midfielder Panomkorn
Saisorn fired in an unstoppable shot from the edge of the United area to secure
all three points for his team and lift them into sixth place in the standings.
Pattaya United’s next match is on Sunday, May 12, away at Suphanburi.
Chonburi FC and Buriram United meanwhile both closed to within 2 points of the
top of the table after they won their respective fixtures and leaders Muang

City lose to second
half strike by Scans
Bangkok Casuals Football League 2013
Paul Frain
Pattaya City FC were on their travels to play another mid-table fixture last
weekend against the Scans in Bangkok.
City started well and in an open game there were chances created at both ends of
the field but neither team could find the finishing touch in an entertaining
half of football that remained goalless at the break. City came closest to
scoring when new signing Alex Caliskan’s volley hit the bar and was cleared to
safety.
City could count themselves unfortunate again at the start of the second half
when the tireless Emery’s curling shot also hit the underside of the Scans bar
and a further good scoring opportunity was missed by Paul Fox.
With luck seemingly not on City’s side today, it appeared inevitable that their
opponents would be the ones to make the breakthrough and they duly obliged from
a direct free-kick that the City keeper got a hand to but could not prevent from
crossing the goal line.
City’s response was immediate with Bryant having a shot saved at the other end
and they put the hosts on the back foot for sustained periods of play but just
couldn’t buy a goal today. The final score saw the Scans taking maximum points
with a 1-0 win.

Barbarians retain title at Chris Kays Pattaya Rugby Festival
![](pictures/s34-Rugby.jpg)
Thai Barbarians take on Thai
Legends in the final.
The Amari Orchid Pattaya Chris Kays Memorial Rugby Tournament
took place at Horseshoe Point last weekend and featured 16 teams playing in the
main draw competition.
The Cup final saw the defending champions, the Thai Barbarians, face off against
the Thai Legends and in a close and absorbing contest it was the ‘Baa-Baas’ who
emerged victorious with a 12-7 victory to retain the trophy they won 12 months
ago.
In the other finals, the Plate was won by the Bangkok Japanese, conquerors of
local favourites Pattaya Panthers in an earlier round. The Japanese put on a
show in the final to defeat Bargunchong by a score of 19-5. The Mosquitoes were
equally dominant in the Shield final as they downed Hong Kong Scottish 21-5, and
Nawamin Old Boys showed they still had a spring in their step as they beat
Bangpoo RFC 10-5 to win the Bowl.
Note: A full and comprehensive report of the 2-day rugby festival will feature
in next week’s Pattaya Mail.
