Scramble success at Navy
The Billabong Bar Golf Society
![](pictures/s7-Billabong1.jpg)
Charlie Cunningham, Greig Ritchie
and Chris Dodd.
Friday, August 30, Plutaluang -
Scramble
It was down to Plutaluang today to play our monthly scramble and it was just
great weather for golf. The course was in grand condition and playing the
East and South loops we got off to an early start and were around in a neat
four hours.
With eight groups playing they were from everywhere: The Courtyard Caviliers
who were the reigning champs were out to keep their title but others in the
pack had different ideas. It was the team of Greig Ritchie, Charlie
Cunningham, Duncan McLean and Chris Dodd who were the winners today with a
score of 58.8. Coming in second was the team of Dennis Pelly, Tony Aslett,
Joe, and Warren Galbraith with a score of 59.9, while third place went to
Team Billabong consisting of Capt Bob, Darl White, Eng Duangwaw and our
friend from Royal Fremantle, Bob Bower, with a score of 60.2. The scores
from there were all in the 61’s but all were very good indeed. The next
scramble will be on the 27th September at the same venue.
Note: If you are looking for a game with some friendly golfers, give Bob a
call on 082 204 3411 or call into the bar and put your name on the start
sheet.

Les shoots personal best at Burapha
PSC golf with I-Rovers
Tuesday, August 27, Pleasant Valley
(white tees) -
Stroke play
A good group today, off to Pleasant Valley and we left on time after a
few wake up calls for the overzealous players. We have been using a
really good bus driver lately; good safe driving, not to fast, knows
where all the courses are located and makes the organizer’s job a lot
easier.
Pleasant Valley looked very busy today, but there was no-one on the
first tee. The first group set off at a flying pace and after three
holes they were in front by a hole and completed the first nine in 1
hour 25 minutes! I think they finished in just a touch over 3 hours
while the scribe’s group still made it round in less than 4 hours. Good
quick golf.
Pleasant Valley is in fairly good condition, with the greens looking a
bit rough but they run quick. This is a course I don’t normally like. I
never seem to score well here with the odd slight spray off the tee
being very costly. After a few shanks to get started, I finally sorted
my game out and got 5 birdies in the last 12 holes. Happy days!
There were some good scores coming in today, with the course playing
fairly short. A well deserved congratulations to Leigh. He’s been
playing with us for a while now, and his consistency is starting to
really come. Leigh shot his first ever sub 100 score today by making a
par on the last to record a 99. Well done mate. Keep moving forward.
Rocky shot his best score with us as well today, Gary, Bruce and Dave
also recorded good scores.
1st Paul (11) 78 gross
2nd Dave (9) 83 gross
3rd Gary (13) 89 gross
Thursday, August 29, Burapha C & D (white tees) -
Stroke play
A small group today off to Burapha where the course was in its
usual pristine condition. We actually teed off on time, but had about 3
groups of Koreans in front so time wise it was a fairly quick round,
about 4 hours, but we seemed to be waiting on every shot.
We welcomed two new good golfers today, Les (hcp 10) from Scotland and
Allan (hcp 14) from France.
C & D course was the challenge and the greens at Burapha always run
fairly fast and true, as proven by some of our scores. I must admit that
at some times throughout the day it felt like someone had put glad wrap
or clear plastic over the holes because our balls seemed to run right
over the cup and never drop.
The only real result of mention today was Les (hcp 10) who had a 76
gross, which is one of his best scores ever in Pattaya. Many of our
other golfers, myself included, had days to forget, still, it was a
great day out.
Note: If you are interested in playing golf with I-Rovers, please
contact Paul on 087 189 5250 or call into the bar on Soi LK Metro.

Johns doubles up for the week
PSC golf Bunker Boys @ The Ranch
Monday, August 26, Green Valley – Medal
The Green Valley course was once again in excellent condition and the
weather was almost perfect for our second medal competition of the month.
The course was relatively quiet but the starter allowed a farang five-ball
to tee off ahead of our first group (something which I haven’t seen here
before), so the pace of play was slow throughout the day.
![](pictures/s10-Bunker.jpg)
The boss presents
the KPK voucher to Mike Johns.
Green Valley is always a happy huntin
ground for our resident medal competition expert Peter Habgood, and there
was plenty of banter before the round about his chances of winning again. In
the event Peter performed true to form, coming home with a great score of
net 69, three shots clear of John Graham in second place.
Geoff Parker took third place on a count back over Raleigh Gosney, after
Raleigh managed to take four putts to card an eight on the par five 14th
hole.
We’ve now played thirteen medal competitions so far this year, and Peter
Habgood has four wins and a second place to his name, whilst no other player
has managed to record more than a single victory – not a bad performance for
one of the most vocal anti-medal critics!
1st Peter Habgood (20) net 69
2nd John Graham (9) net 72
3rd Geoff Parker (14) net 74
Only two near pins were claimed today, the first by PJ Redmond and the
second was shared between Mashi Kaneta and Colin Greig, with the balls being
too close to separate by measurement.
Wednesday, August 28, Greenwood C & A – Stableford
Another bright and breezy day and we arrived at
the Greenwood course to find it almost deserted. We were able to tee off a
few minutes early and the leading group completed the round in under four
hours, without encountering any other golfers on the course.
The course was in excellent condition and
even Colin Greig (who’s the course’s biggest critic) was forced to concede
that the surrounds of the greens have now been cut to a reasonable length,
allowing him to use his normal tactic of putting from off the green.
Mike Johns was the outstanding player on the day, coming home with 40 points
to win the coveted KPK voucher. Geoff Parker scored an impressive 22 points
on the outward nine, but faded on the back nine and had to be content with
second place, finishing two points ahead of Gerry Cooney.
1st Mike Johns (18) 40pts
2nd Geoff Parker (14) 37pts
3rd Gerry Cooney (13) 35pts
Only three near pins were claimed, by Geoff Parker and Gerry Cooney (2).
Friday, August 30, Pattana A & C – Stableford
After some confusion over the agreed green fee, we
were eventually able to complete registration (including the reinstatement
of the procedure of photocopying PSC cards) and the first group got away on
schedule.
The course was quiet and the weather almost perfect once again, and at least
on this occasion we were starting on the A nine, thereby avoiding the
intimidating first hole on the B course. We played off the white tees, which
with a course distance of over 6,700 yards, is a little too long for some of
our more senior members, but the fairways and greens were in good condition.
Mike Johns recorded his second win in successive games, finishing two points
clear of Geoff Cox, with Colin Greig taking third place on a count back
ahead of Gerry Cooney.
Special mention is due to Terry Hamilton who was playing his final game at
the end of his brief holiday, and was hoping to emulate his success two
weeks ago when he won the first game of his tour. Terry had a great outward
nine, carding 21 points, and then collapsed on the back nine with an almost
record low total of three (3!!) points. Terry couldn’t offer any explanation
for the disaster, except to say he was worried about the thought of
returning to work!
Over refreshments back at The Ranch we said our goodbyes to Terry, and Colin
Greig was confirmed as the Golfer of the Month for August despite the late
charge from Mike Johns, who finished in second place.
1st Mike Johns (18) 35pts
2nd Geoff Cox (15) 33pts
3rd Colin Greig (9) 32pts
Near pins went to Geoff Cox, Geoff Parker and Mike Johns(2).
Note: The Bunker Boys are a PSC affiliated golf society, who now play out of
The Ranch bar on Pattaya 3rd Road (in front of the fire station, and almost
opposite the Buffalo Bar). We play three times per week on Mondays,
Wednesdays, and Fridays, so if you enjoy a fun day out, and a friendly but
competitive golf competition why not come and join us.
We meet at The Ranch at 9 a.m. for breakfast and transportation, and new
players are always welcome. Contact “Buff” on 086 046 5091 or 080 605 5663
for all enquiries. You can find all the news, schedules and results on our
website at www.bunkersociety.com.

The scribe sneaks in for monthly honours

Tuesday, August 27, Green Valley – Stableford
This was a weird day with many of our players playing
with Colin at Lewiinski’s as he had his 70th birthday competition. We actually
informed our players this was on and probably would have played except it was a
Tuesday. We wish Colin all the best and a happy 70th birthday, even if he is a
young boy.
Back to the golf - we always enjoy this course and despite the fact that many of
our players were missing, we still had three groups to tee off. Not bad really
for a quiet day. I could also say that the weather was fine and it was one of
those days you like to get out for a walk, as long as you have a cart.
All who have played Green Valley know that this is always a great course and
today was no different. The wind did get a bit gusty at times, but the fairways
were great and the greens tricky but sometimes the ball went in the hole. Our
four-ball were all playing well and it put the scribe in a good mood when his
tee shot at the par three 16th hit the pin, but as is usual bounced off and
finished 18 inches from the hole. One day!!
Round over, I took the score cards in and was a bit surprised when Dick reminded
me it was the end of the month and the MBMG Group golfer of the month award.
Where does the time go? Wow, as it stood it looked like the winner on the day
would be golfer of the month.
Soon back at Bert’s we got the results underway a bit early as we had decided to
go down and wish Colin a happy birthday. The winner on the day, with a score of
39 points was the scribe, and it couldn’t have happened to a (nicer!!) man, my
mother told me. In second place was that perennial winner Mashi Kaneta with 36
points and in third was George King with 35 points on count back over Landis
Brooks in fourth.
![](pictures/s10-Bert2.jpg)
Friday’s top two - Don Carmody &
Dick Warberg.
So the MBMG Group golfer of the month was your
humble correspondent Derek Brook (well done me!) and Dick Warberg took it very
well, as per the photo. Then we stopped for quite a few before bimbling down to
Lewiinski’s and having a few more. And a great day was had by all.
Friday, August 30, Plutaluang – Stableford
The test for Friday was to be the West and North
course at Navy, much beloved by some and not by others. As is usual when we go
to this venue I give it a miss as it’s not my favourite, but I am always
disagreed with when I voice my dislike. However, despite my personal
reservations, it is well worth a visit as the people are friendly and the
restaurant has a great view and is very good value. Also they have a very good
green fee rate. Horses for courses!
I actually do not mind the South and East layouts when they are in good
condition, but am not a person who likes playing off the broad leaf grass - very
difficult to hit a wood off.
On this day I am told the course was in good condition, and even though a 3-ball
and a 6-ball were slipped in between our first and second groups, the pace moved
quite well. As said, the fairways were in quite good condition and the greens
although used were fast and a good test.
Back at Bert’s it was time for the results and it was noticeable that the course
had won against all except the winner. So the winner today with 37 points was
Don Carmody and we then had a three-way count back on 32 points that saw Dick
Warberg in second, Anders Pederson in third and George King in fourth. T.T.F.N.

Owen leads the way
PSC Golf from Siam Country Resort
![](pictures/s11-SC.jpg)
Tuesday winners, Owen &
Phill.
Tuesday, August 27, Khao Kheow -
Stableford
Tuesday saw us visit Khao Kheow, with the A & C the combination played from
the yellow tees at a tad over 6300 yards. The B loop renovation is nearing
completion, another week or two and it will be available for play, so I am
told. Several holes at KK are not currently up to the usual high standard
expected after many years of playing this venue, but I am sure the
management will get it in order in the near future.
Owen Walkley (13) came to grips best with the day’s conditions to sign for a
respectable 34 points. Phill Waite (13), making his return to golf after
being hit by a ball several weeks ago, managed to score second spot with a
solid 31 points.
Near pins went to Phill, Jonathan & Jeff with 2.
Thursday, August 29, Phoenix - Stableford
Phoenix was our venue for Thursday, with the Mountain & Lakes being the
allotted test, while Ocean continues with its maintenance. With tees well
forward to near the yellows on Mountain, the course was playing at just
under 6000 yards.
Jeff Wylie (5) maintained some form over the shortened 18 holes to shoot 72
and sign for 41 points. Martin Hayes (13) playing with Jeff, was going shot
for shot, but faded on the last few holes to finish with 36 points,
collecting third place. New lady player Noo Pulbrook (13) almost made a
dream start to playing with SCR, scoring 40 points to just be edged into
second spot.
Near pins were spread around between Jeff, Phill & Martin.
On Wednesday it was the PAGS Tournament at Eastern Star, with a group of 4
representatives from SCR, namely Willem, Jonathan, Jeff & Paddy who all put
on a good showing. Names were written on several technicals, with Willem &
Jeff also getting runner up spots in their flights.
Note: Siam Country Resort, Restaurant & Bar is located just off Siam Country
Club Rd, after going under the arch past the 7/11, turn right after 50
metres, with the venue on the left another 200 metres along. Golf from here
is generally played on Tuesday & Thursday, with the Resort hosting prompt
presentations on both days.
As a PSC affiliated venue we welcome ALL golfers, including ladies & seniors
who have opted for the “Silver” tee option. Call 089 0941 841 for scheduling
or enquiries. Hope to see you there, cheers & good golfing!

Monday, August 26, Eastern Star – Stableford
It was a fine, sunny Monday morning in Pattaya as
a very good field of 18 golfers met at The Growling Swan ready to take the
journey to the challenging Eastern Star Golf Course. There were welcomes
handed out to Marco Beer from Switzerland, John Swanson from Pattaya and the
returning regular Takeshi Hakozaki from Japan.
Departing the GS 5 minutes early at 8.25 am we headed South down Sukhumvit
and after a 45 minute drive arrived at the golf course to find some activity
but relatively quiet. After a few putts on the practice putting green we
were invited to the first tee and our first group, a three-ball got away 15
minutes ahead of schedule at 9.45 am in perfect weather conditions for golf
albeit a bit hot & humid.
The golf course was in great shape with very well maintained greens and
bunkers and there was to be no excuse for anything but good golf being
played, although in the end there was only one golfer who played to their
handicap or better.
Being a three-ball we did have to wait a few times but still had a fairly
quick round managing to complete the 18 holes in three hours & forty five
minutes.
![](pictures/s12-GS2.jpg)
Gerd Riedler, Geri Crilly & Patrick Poussier.
We had 2 Grades - A Grade for handicaps 0 to 18 and B Grade
for handicaps 19 & over with 3 places in each grade. There were also rewards
for nearest the pins on the four par threes and longest first putts on the
9th & 18th greens.
Seven-handicapper Gerd Riedler showed his class in winning the A Grade
section with 37 points and Brad “Bad” Todd was second on 35 points. With two
players on 34 points a count back was required and resulted in Marco Beer
(19 point back nine) finishing third from Ken Hole (17 point back nine).
The B Grade was won by Patrick Poussier who had 35 points and another count
back with two golfers on 33 points saw Walter Baechli (18 point back nine)
end up in second place from Dave Neal (15 point back nine) who finished
third.
A Flight (0-18)
1st Gerd Riedler (7) 37pts
2nd Brad Todd (18) 35pts
3rd Marco Beer (17) 34pts
B Flight (19+)
1st Patrick Poussier (30) 35pts
2nd Walter Baechli (19) 33pts
3rd Dave Neal (22) 33pts
Near Pins: 3rd – Takeshi Hakozaki, 6th – Gerd Riedler, 13th – Kurt – Eric
Persson, 17th – John Pierrel
Long Putts: 9th – Brad Todd,18th – Patrick Poussier
The Growling Swan NAGA Award, (awarded to the golfer who has the worst score
on the day and discreetly their score is not made public) was won by Geri
Crilly and he accepted & wore the award with pride.
Thursday, August 29, Greenwood C & A – Stroke/Monthly Mug
It was that time of the month again when we get to play a stroke round for
the Growling Swan Monthly Mug and we had a very good field of 30 golfers who
were keen to tackle the Greenwood Golf Course. We assembled at the GS 30
minutes later than normal due to a later start time and welcomes were handed
out to good friend J J Harney returning from several months in Ireland,
Vaughan Jackson from Western Australia and Lyndsay Slender from just down
the road in Soi Chaiyapoon.
Departing right on our scheduled time of 9.00 am we headed off up No. 7,
3240 and then the very busy 331 and after a one hour drive arrived at the
golf course where we were allotted the C & A nines. The course appeared to
be surprisingly quiet on this, one of their Sports Days with a 650 baht
green fee rate and we managed to get our first four-ball away right on time
at 10.30 am in fine and sunny weather conditions, although rather humid.
It was my pleasure to have three of The Growling Swan Delinquents with me in
group one and I was looking forward to playing for the first time with Peter
Grey, Paul “Muncha” Moloney and Nolan Wise.
The golf course was in great shape throughout with lush fairways and super
greens and as we teed off on C1 the noise that was heard was that of Peter
Grey’s knees knocking as he shaped up for his drive in front of the hushed
assembled masses but he calmly sent one down the fairway much to his relief.
We didn’t see any other golfers in front of us so proceeded at a good pace,
particularly for a stroke round and we managed to complete the eighteen
holes in four hours & fifteen minutes. It had been great fun with me hearing
swear words that I had never heard before and we all agreed that we should
do it again sometime.
In addition to the Monthly Mug award we were able to have 2 grades with A
Grade being for handicaps 0 to 17 and B Grade for handicaps of 18 and over
with 5 prizes in each grade. There were also rewards for nearest the pins
all the par threes and longest first putts on the A9 & C9 greens.
It was the visiting Dave Neal who took out the coveted Growling Swan Monthly
Mug with a fine score of net 71. The winner of the A Grade was Stu
“Heineken” Rifkin with a net 72 followed by Paul “Hacky” Hack (net 36 back
nine) in second place and J.J. Harney (net 37 back nine) was third with both
having net 74. In fourth place came Martin “Toddy” Todd with a net 75 and
with 2 golfers on net 76 it was your writer, Peter “Blacky” Blackburn (net
36 back nine) who finished in fifth place from John Pierrel (net 37 back
nine) after the count back.
Thientong Charoenrung won the B Grade with a net 74 from Brad “Bad” Todd in
second spot with net 75. With 3 golfers on net 77 another count back was
required which resulted in Geri Crilly (net 36 back nine) taking third place
from John Davis (net 42 back nine) finishing fourth and Max “Corsets”
Bracegirdle (net 43 back nine) was fifth.

The Growling Swan NAGA Award was well won by Niall Stuart who accepted the
cap gracefully and wore it for a considerable time back in the bar.
Presentations were of course back at the bar on this occasion and we thanked
Peter Grey for his continued sponsorship of this monthly event and also for
providing the delicious chicken dinner afterwards.
Toddy then paraded Deefa the Dog after announcing the many fines for the day
and there were plenty of donations to Deefa which of course go the needy
people of Pattaya.
Note: Growling Swan Golf, the home of friendly golf in Pattaya welcomes
golfers of any persuasion – low & high handicappers alike, female golfers
and beginners. We generally play Mondays & Thursdays, meeting at The

Beaker’s big score
The Backyard Golf Society
![](pictures/s13-Backyard.jpg)
Beaker Larsen celebrates his win
with the staff at Blue Sky Bar.
It is not often that a 41 point round
plays second fiddle in a golf report but Michelle’s post-game antics at the
Backyard Golf Society’s game last week stole the show. Not only did Michelle
attempt to check out George’s undercarriage, he also tried to purchase a
rather large set of under-garments and saw double all the way home.
Ok, on to the golf. The winner at Emerald on Friday, August 30 was Beaker
Larsen, his 41 points blitzing the field. His 17 handicap was certainly
generous and will be adjusted down accordingly for his next trip to Pattaya
from Montevideo.
The near-pin prize was won by Jimmy ‘2 Stone’ - his umpteenth win on the
short but tricky par three 15th hole at Emerald.
There was a good spread on the skins with 7 to Beaker, 5 to Passport Control
(currently single-ish and still awaiting Yaya’s return), 4 to Michelle and 1
each to Dan the Diet Whiskey Man and The Quiet Man Anderton.
Down the road for a few cleansing ales where Michelle’s afore mentioned
antics keep everyone entertained even if she could not recall all the
details the next day.

Mann takes the plaudits in Hua Hin
Outback Golf Bar 3rd Syd LeBron Memorial Putter Tournament
![](pictures/s14HH1.jpg)
Hua Hin top three, from
left: Andre Coetzee, Steve Mann and Barney Clarkson.
Monday, August 26, Imperial Lake View Resort &
G.C. – Day 1
Reports came in from the early arriving participants
for the 3rd Syd LeBron Memorial Putter in Hua Hin spoke of poor weather
conditions. However, when the main body of the 35 players arrived here
during the course of Sunday afternoon, there was no sign of rain and
General Jack predicted that the Outback will have good weather for golf
during the week ahead as they always do.
![](pictures/s14HH2.jpg)
Pottsy enjoys his NAGA
reward.
The first round of the three day
tournament was on the C & D nines of the Imperial Lake View Resort &
Golf Club near Cha-Am, about 25 minutes drive North of Hua Hin; an
impressive entrance off highway 4 opening up to many acres of grounds
featuring extensive hotel facilities as well as two 18 hole golf
courses. The greeting from the staff was warm and courteous and the
Manager, K Worawuth was clearly very happy to see us.
We had the course to ourselves with nobody in front of us, resulting in
a good pace of play for everyone. The front nine was tight with well
bunkered small greens whilst the back nine in contrast was more open
with massive greens and some long holes, particularly the last, a par 4,
at 429yds and playing every bit of it.
Murray Hart led the way in Div A with a joint top score of the day
38pts, beating Andree Coetzee (36) and Aussie visitor Colin Hoole,
playing off 2, with 34pts, and Gavin Perfect taking fourth spot with 33.
Denis Steele, the winner of Div B, matched the same 38pts with Steve
Mann (36) in second followed home by Rosco, also on 36 and Kissy with
35.
Div C didn’t do quite so well with the scoring but the winner, Andy
Makara (35pts) is quite accustomed to winning and he beat David Davies
(34), John Player (34) and a name you rarely see, Jack Moseley with 33.
Suzi’s chances were scuppered the minute she looked at the card, if you
guys think the ladies have an advantage on the Pattaya courses, they
certainly don’t here; the red tees were set at 5939 yards!
Finally, there were five ‘2’s which would be added to the overall ‘2’s
pool on Thursday. Barry Copestake (3rd), John Player (7th) from off the
green and Colin Hoole got three 3rd, 7th and 16th.
Div A (0-13)
1st Murray Hart (13) 38pts
2nd Andre Coetzee (6) 36pts
3rd Colin Hoole (2) 34pts
4th Gavin Perfect (12) 33pts
Div B (14-17)
1st Denis Steele (15) 38pts
2nd Stephen Mann (14) 36pts
3rd Rosco Langoulant (15) 36pts
4th Keith Buchanan (15) 35pts
Div C (19+)
1st Andy Makara (25) 35pts
2nd David Davies (25) 34pts
3rd John Player (18) 34pts
4th Jack Moseley (20) 33pts
Tuesday, August 27, Black Mountain G.C. - Day 2
So after the excellent day at Imperial Lake
View, everybody was looking forward to Black Mountain today, a truly
great course and not to be missed but it is getting very pricey but you
can’t come to Hua Hin and not play it. In the high season, when we
return here in March 2014, we will try to include it in the schedule,
even if it’s the “day off” option.
![](pictures/s14HH3.jpg)
John Lawton.
The weather was great again and as we
drove up the approach road to the main course, the check in was swift
and efficient with another new lady (Pookie) looking after the tour
groups; she was keen to tell me the new booking rules and assures me
that it will be the same price for everybody, not one price for us and
another for Thais; Hmmmm, we shall see!
We teed off, about 20 minutes ahead of schedule from the “61” tee
markers rated at 70.4/131 measuring only about 6100 yards (hence “61”
marker). There were one or two murmurs of it (the course being short)
but to move up to the “65” markers is a whole new ball game as the
rating shoots up to 72.2/135; which would be a stern test for our
average 19 handicapper.
Two fantastic scores today both 43’s; one from Steve Mann winning Div B
by nine points over three players tied on 34, namely Bernie Stafford,
Martin Kingswood and Rosco. The other 43pts came as a bit of a surprise
from John Lawton playing in the last group with Jack, Dennis and Jim.
John played really well even with the copious amounts of amber nectar,
never missing a fairway and some great approach shots but he did leave a
few putts out there. John’s best ever stableford points round. Well done
mate!
The minor places in Div C were filled by Andy Makara, who won Monday,
with 38, Dave Bowers with 37 and Barney on 35.
More excellent scores in Div A from Barry Copestake who won with 42pts
from tournament favourite Andre Coetzee (41pts), Nigel Flanagan (37) and
Muzza (35).
There were eight more ‘2’s today from: Martin Kingswood (3rd), Stephen
Mann & David Trantham-Fryer (8th), Paul Bourke, Sugar Ray Handford &
Keith Buchanan (11th) and Dennis Hills & Eddy Beilby on the 14th.
Div A (0-13)
1st Barry Copestake (12) 42pts
2nd Andre Coetzee (6) 41pts
3rd Nigel Flanagan (12) 37pts
4th Murray Hart (13) 35pts
Div B (14-17)
1st Stephen Mann (14) 43pts
2nd Bernie Stafford (14) 34pts
3rd Martin Kingswood (15) 34pts
4th Rosco Langoulant (15) 34pts
Div C (18+)
1st John Lawton (19) 43pts
2nd Andy Makara (25) 38pts
3rd Dave Bowers (19) 37pts
4th Barney Clarkson (23) 35pts
Thursday, August 29, Banyan G.C. - Day 2
As is usual with our Hua Hin tours, the last
round is at the stunning Banyan course, perhaps not quite so efficient
as in the past and with the change in policy which came into effect in
May this year, you can now walk here with the cart a very expensive
add-on! So the prices here are going up as well and are getting up
towards the heady heights of Black Mountain; we’ll just have to wait and
see what the high season will bring.
![](pictures/s14HH4.jpg)
Barry Copestake.
The weather was once again fantastic
and the first tee was scheduled at 9.20 with the field going out in
reverse order (leaders last) after two days. In the first group, a
three-ball, was Suzi, Martin & Pottsy and guess what, John Lawton bought
all three of them in the pre-tournament auction! At the other end of the
field, the last group out was Steve Mann, Andre Coetzee, Andy Makara &
John Lawton.
Jeff Calrow battled well for his 41pts to win Div A from Andre Coetzee
(40pts) who had to step up his game to try to hang on to the shirt tails
of Steve Mann (41pts), who won Div B, as the two of them went head to
head for the overall win. Barry Copestake did well again for 37pts with
three more on 36; Paul Bourke, Fidge Button and Gavin Perfect.
Rosco featured again in Div B for second place with 37, beating Denis
Steele on count back and Micky Leighton claimed his first podium finish
for fourth place on 35. Barney Clarkson, who had 25pts on the front
nine, piled on another 17 on the back to register the day’s top score of
42 to easily win Div C by three from Nigel Cannon (39), Jim Payne and
John Player both with 38.
General Jack, showed some signs of returning to the game after recording
his best score of the week, 37pts after only scoring 3pts in the last
four holes. He claimed he was nobbled by NY Steve!
So how did it all end up? Steve Mann got the overall win with the
massive total of 120 points, just one off Ian Heddle’s record 121pts
also in Hua Hin back in Aug 2010, and it was Steve’s third tour win,
having won previously at Siem Reap and Chiang Mai.
Second was Andre on 117 and these two were a long way clear of the third
place man, Barney who finished on 109 after shooting up from tenth place
after the first two days.
The NAGA was awarded to Pottsy, who downed the beer in record time and
Pottsy also won a very special prize, a pewter tankard for a near pin on
the 11th hole at Black Mountain, presented by Nigel Cannon in memory of
our good mate, Chad.
There were five more ‘2’s - Andre Coetzee had two on holes 4 & 5, Martin
Kingswood had two on holes 4 & 15 and John Lawton on the 4th, making the
total for the week, 18.
Div A (0-13)
1st Jeff Calrow (13) 41pts
2nd Andre Coetzee (6) 40pts
3rd Barry Copestake (12) 37pts
4th Paul Bourke (8) 36pts
Div B (14-17)
1st Stephen Mann (14) 41pts
2nd Rosco Langoulant (15) 37pts
3rd Denis Steele (15) 37pts
4th Mick Leighton (16) 35pts
Div C (18+)
1st Barney Clarkson (23) 42pts
2nd Nigel Cannon (22) 39pts
3rd Jim Payne (26) 38pts
4th John Player (18) 38pts
Overall 3-Day Scores
1st Stephen Mann, 120pts
2nd Andre Coetzee, 117pts
3rd Barney Clarkson, 109pts
4th Andy Makara, 107pts
5th Rosco Langoulant, 107pts
6th Murray Hart, 107pts
7th Barry Copestake, 106pts
8th Jeff Calrow, 106pts

Fitzgerald in sparkling form at Emerald
Jomtien Golf with the IPGC
Monday, August 26, Mountain Shadow
– Stableford
Jomtien Golf, The Haven and the Pattaya Golf Society all
unknowingly booked this same course here today but this did not cause a
problem for any of our groups.
There had been a few discussions over the previous few days as to what
tees to play from here. Our normal ruling has always been one tee from
the back, so there was talk of playing from the whites for a change
instead of the blues. On the card the whites are 5,840 yards and the
blues 6,280 but as we approached the first tee the marshall informed us
that the majority of the blue tees had been moved forward to the white
tee positions for the day, so we teed off from the blues once again!
![](pictures/s15-Jomtien1.jpg)
Rod Howett.
The two divisional cut today was 4-17
in division 1 and 22+ in division 2 and in his last game before
returning to Africa for four weeks, Paul Butler returned a winning score
of 38 points to win division 1 ahead of Steve Richardson in second one
point behind and Lindsay Phillips took third with 36.
The Welsh boy, David Phillips, was the
winner in division 2 with 34 points and Alan Bissell finished second 5
points behind after beating Rodney Howett on a 15/11 back nine count
back.
Near pins were won by Paul Butler, Lindsay Phillips, Roar Berger, David
Phillips, Fred Temminck and Anna Marie Usher.
In the ‘2’s in Division 1, Harry Vincenzi and Terry Madsen birdied the
5th and Paul Butler the 8th to share the pot, while Anna Marie Usher was
the only winner in division 2 with a birdie on the 5th as well.
Wednesday, August 28, The Emerald - Stableford
This was our first visit here for more than seven weeks due to the
improvement work being done to the course and there were still cordoned
off areas approaching the greens, some of which were marked GUR and some
others not, but we played the nearest point of relief for a drop on
these areas.
![](pictures/s15-Jomtien2.jpg)
Lindsay Phillips.
Billy Fitzgerald topped the first
division with 40 points; a full eight points ahead of Lindsay Phillips
in second place who beat Ian Usher on a 15/14 back-nine count back.
These scores were remarkable today as all of the white tees had been
taken back just in front of the blue markers. The shortest par 3 today
was 163 yards off the white tees and in the nearest the pins there were
four prizes left unclaimed.
In division two the cockney boy, Rod Howett, came in with 36 points to
take first place, beating Countback Burnie by seven points, and in third
place on 28 was Alan Bissell who beat David Phillips on a 17/15
back-nine count back after both came in with 28 points each.
Near today went to Billy Fitzgerald (2), Terry Madsen and Paul Hartley.
In the ‘2’s, Billy Fitzgerald birdied the 7th to win the division 1 pot
and in division 2 there was a rollover to the following Wednesday.
For the majority it was an enjoyable return here and we will be back in
three weeks. Today was bon voyage to Steve Richardson, back to Oz for a
few months, have a good trip Steve!
Friday, August 30, Eastern Star - Stableford
Despite heavy rain here on the Thursday, the
course conditions today were almost perfect and the group was split into
two flights with the cut coming at 5-17 and 19 plus.
![](pictures/s15-Jomtien3.jpg)
Kari Kuparinen.
After a three month break in Ireland,
there was a warm welcome return for Frank Kelly who took the top podium
position in division 1 with 37 points. Kari Kuparinen also returned
today and still playing off 5 he came in second on 34 while Bill Bertram
beat Tony Thorne on a 17/16 back-nine count back for third after they
both finished on 33 points.
Bristol Bob, a.k.a. Bob Poole, returned from China and in his first game
for many months he took third place in division 2 with 32 points. The
organizer, sinking every putt on the green in one shot, finished second
with 35 and the winner with 37 was Iain Walsh playing off 20 (and 19
next week!)
Near pins went to Arthur Hancock, Kari Kuparinen, Terry Madsen, Tony
Thorne, Bruce Gardner, Rod Howett and Sid Ottaway.
Rod Howett secured sole possession of the ‘2’s pot in the second
division after a 12ft putt on the 166 yard par-three 6th, while Arthur
Hancock, Terry Madsen and Tony Thorne split the takings in division 1.
Note: Our Chiang Mai trip is fully confirmed now - departing on October
19-20 for one week with 3/4 rounds of golf there with a variety of
accommodation preferences and the four golf courses still under review.
Please contact Glyn or Lyn or sign up at Siam Cats in Soi 5, Jomtien.

Wot! No Aussies?
The Pattaya Golf Society (IPGC) at Rabbi’s Elephant Bar
The Pattaya Golf Society visited
Mountain Shadow on Monday, 26th August to play a stableford competition
on the testing course which was in excellent condition with quite pacey
greens.
Starting on time, the group made good progress and a very pleasant and
comfortable breeze cooled them throughout. For once there were no Aussie
golfers in the top places and Wichai Tananusorn and Mr Len shared third
place with 31 points each. Only one point ahead were the joint winners
Masashi Iizumi and Thai lady golfer Wan Meeraka.
There were no birdie ‘2’s and the Booby Bevy went to Jeff Hunt for his
record split figures of 21 and 7. In addition, he benefitted from an
extreme rebound off a course dog to put himself in position on the sixth
to record his first par of the day.
All-in-all it had been another fine day on a splendid golf course.
Bangpra shows its teeth
Wednesday, 28th August saw the Pattaya Golf Society travel to Bangpra to
play its monthly medal event on the quality course which had been
freshened by some overnight rain that left the fairways lacking the
usual run. In addition, the use of the newly relaid white tees saw tee
placements well back and the greens were their usual tasty and testing
best. Scoring would be tough as the group found out.
Sharing second place with net 80 were the trio of Leigh Abbey, Evan
Millar and Wichai Tananusorn, the latter producing the best gross
figures of the day, 85. The winner was the amiable Frenchman Jean Morel
whose net 78 was a result of accurate if not long hitting, and it proved
the adage that “nice guys sometimes win”.
Evan Millar recorded the only birdie ‘2’ of the day, on the attractive
twelfth hole and Ian Wilson’s quadruple par on the third guaranteed him
the Booby Bevy.
Bangpra continues to be a firm favourite in the minds of many Pattaya
golfers and in this condition it has more than enough to offer golfers
of all handicaps a fair test of golf.
Tananusorn’s gem at Emerald
The Pattaya Golf Society ended the week with a trip to Emerald to play a
stableford competition on a course which was in good condition despite
the remedial work that has been done on the fairways and any efforts
that enhance the quality of the fairway grasses have to be applauded.
With preferred lies in place the flight got off to a prompt start and
those making good progress included Garry Hookey and Robbie Taylor who
both finished with 33 points to share runner-up. The round of the day
was being played by Wichai Tananusorn and after nine holes he was level
par for the course. After sixteen he was still on course for a gross 72
but unbelievably his trusty Cobra turned and bit him with two huge pulls
setting up awkward rescue attempts on both seventeen and eighteen. Such
is golf but his forty point return was his best round since early April.
It was an excellent performance indeed.
There were no birdie ‘2’s and the returning Wayne Morrison took the
Booby Bevy for his low score, on his birthday as well! But the day
belonged to a smiling Khun Wichai who is looking forward to a further
reduction in his small handicap before the new week begins.

Stafford returns standout
score at Burapha
PSC golf from The Outback Golf Bar
Monday, August 26,
Burapha - Stableford
With 35 Outbackers on tour to Hua Hin another 18 played the Burapha C and D
nines in perfect weather with all groups finishing in around three and a half
hours, as the course was virtually empty.
The rough was rough as usual and it was interesting to see the difference in
scores between the two divisions (obviously the better golfers stayed on the
fairway!) as 38 on c/b was not enough for a podium finish in Div A. There were
actually four players with 38pts; the unlucky ones being Pete Stonebridge & John
O’Keefe, as Mark Allen (2nd) pipped Bob Finley (3rd) and the winner by three
with 41pts was John Stafford, who has been playing very well of late.
Division B was won by Bob Lindborg with 35pts from Bruce McAdam (34) and Chris
Smart, who is coming to terms with his new 28 handicap, had 33.
There were three ‘2’s from John Stafford & Peter Stonebridge on C5 and Mark
Allen on C8.
Div A (0-17)
1st John Stafford (16) 41pts
2nd Mark Allen (17) 38pts
3rd Bob Finley (14) 38pts
Div B (18+)
1st Bob Lindborg (22) 35pts
2nd Bruce McAdam (28) 34pts
3rd Chris Smart (28) 33pts
Wednesday, August 28,
Siam Plantation - Stableford
8 players at Plantation on the A & C nines and after
the heavy overnight rain we decided to adopt the “lift, clean and place” option
on the fairways and first cut areas.
Siam Plantation is still without a doubt one of the best presented courses we
play and it was surprising we had the course to ourselves. Today’s winner with
35pts was Chris Smart, who if he keeps playing this well will not be on a 28
h’cp for long! Runner up was Geoff Stimpson with 33 and Ron Dickie third with 30
on count back.
There were no ‘2’s.
1st Chris Smart (28) 35pts
2nd Geoff Stimpson (7) 33pts
3rd Tony Pike (10) 30pts
Friday, August 30,
Green Valley - Stableford
With a members’ tournament at Green Valley, the 20
Outbackers were moved across to St. Andrews. The fairways and rough were
excellent but the greens were a little two paced and a lot of the bunkers were
more like wet mud.
Div A was won by Peter Nixon with 37pts from John Cunningham in second, beating
John O’Keefe on count back, both with 36.
Div B went Mark Allen also with 37pts with Mark Kembrey second on 35 and Waldo
third with 34.
There were two ‘2’s from Joe Mooneyham (5th) and John O’Keefe (17th).
Div A (0-15)
1st Peter Nixon (11) 37pts
2nd John Cunningham (6) 36pts
3rd John O’Keefe (14) 36pts

Pierre and Yui the perfect match
PSC golf from Lewiinski’s Golf Society
![](pictures/s18golf1.jpg)
Sunday winners - Jim Bell & Peter
Henshaw.
Sunday, August 25, Green Valley –
Stableford
A Flight
1st Jim Bell (15) 41pts
2nd Mark Wood (8) 40pts
3rd Chris Davidson (12) 38pts
B Flight
1st Peter Henshaw (16) 37pts
2nd Don Lehmer (17) 37pts
3rd Peter Terry (17) 36pts
Near Pins: No 4 Phil Graham, No 9 Nick Shaw, No 12 Jim Bell, No 16
Warren Meridith.
Nobody told Jimmy A-K-47 Bell it was not the monthly medal so Jim went out
and shot a best of the day41 points, there by reducing his handicap without
the benefit of a trophy! Mark Wood, who has not been able to play as much as
he would like given his work commitments, still gave evidence that
infrequent play will not equate to infrequent pay as he was just a step
below Jim with a credible 40 points. The final spot in A Flight was filled
by our old friend Chris Davidson on 38 points.
![](pictures/s18golf2.jpg)
Birthday bash winners - Pierre &
Yui Bietry.
The roaster of B Flight winners read like
a who’s who of the Lewiinski’s golf society with Peter ‘the silver surfer’
Henshaw and Don ‘the ladies man’ Lehmer in a head to head count back, both
locked on 37 points. Peter wouldn’t budge as he took top spot, leaving Don
waiting at the church with the silver. Peter Terry, always there or there
abouts, filled the flight.
Jim Bell Claude Harder and Fred Graham shared the very healthy 2’s pot.
Tuesday, August 27, Plutaluang - The Donkey’s
Birthday Bash
1st Pierre & Yui, net 64.5
2nd Tom & Max, net 64.5
3rd Bobby & Dipty, net 64.5
Colin the Donkey Davis held his birthday bash and the event had an excellent
turnout. While team events are often viewed as “day‘s off” there is nothing
easy, or particularly relaxing, about the demanding two-person scramble
format. One bad shot by the lead man and the weight of making a golf shot,
and “not letting the team down” falls directly in to the second players lap.
Although the format is considered American it appeared to suit many
different nationalities that make Thailand their home.
Three teams all carded excellent scores of net of 64.5 and emerging from the
pile up was the Swiss/Thai partnership of Pierre and Yui Bietry who were
crowned the winners and presented with the winners’ trophies. Aussie pals
Tom McMahon and Max Bracegirdle took the silver trophies as the Indian Boys
Bobby and Dipty collected the bronze.
Freddy Starbeck decided (as only he could) that the long drive and near pins
were to be abolished and made lucky draw prizes after the presentation. The
party went on long into the early hours as everyone sung happy birthday 70
times.
Wednesday, August 28, Burapha A & B - Stableford
1st Kevin Rogers (12) 36 pts
2nd Rod Brown (17) 34 pts
Whilst the Donkey’s birthday was a great and not to be missed event, it did
little to bolster the turnout for today’s trip to Burapha, as a modest but
sober gang showed up.
Kevin Rogers was happy he made the effort as his solid even par return was
good for the man of the match; he was also the sole recipient of the 2’s
pot. Kevin was closely followed into the barn by Rod Brown two shots adrift.
Friday, August 30, Mountain Shadow - Stableford
A Flight
1st Kevin Rogers (12) 41pts
2nd Max Scott (4) 35pts
3rd Nick Shaw (16) 32pts
B Flight
1st Jim Elphick (27) 36pts
2nd Brian Prudden (19) 35pts
3rd Rod Brown (17) 33pts
To cap the week off right, the society decided to visit old friend Mountain
Shadow on Friday.
The A Flight seemed to weather the ride slightly better than their golf
challenged B Flight compatriots. Kevin Rogers was man of the match with a
fine 41 points six clear of A Flight mate Aussie Max Scott and yet three
more than the trio of Brit Nick Shaw, Lou the pied piper of Oz and Canadian
Jean LaRoche. The Battling Brit got the most Wampum out of the count back as
Lou and Jean came out empty handed.
In B Flight Jimmy ‘two shots’ Elphick stood atop the podium with a steady
even par haul and his fellow step-climbers were second placed Brain Prudden
with 35 points and third placed Rod Brown with 33.
Brian Prudden promised to take Marlene shopping, as he was the sole heir to
the 2’s pot -that’s if she could catch him!

I should like to begin this week’s report by wishing Fergus Brennan, the
organizer of the TRGG, a speedy recovery from his extensive recent
dental work. When it is all completed he will feel like a new man but
for now he is probably going through a period of extreme discomfort not
only to his mouth but to his pocket as well. All the work he is
undergoing does not come cheap.
![](pictures/s19-TR1.jpg)
Tewin (Poopay) Lamthong.
Fergus played his last round of golf, before heading off to the dentist
surgery, on Monday 26th August with the TRGG at Plutaluang (South and
East courses) and probably knowing it was going to be his last for a
while put in the extra effort to get onto the winner’s podium. This
indeed is what happened with him only stepping aside for his lady love
Poopay (what a gentleman), talk about keeping it in the family. His old
adversary Ted Senior was just behind in third place.
1st Tewin Poopay Lamthong (11) 39pts
2nd Fergus Brennan (13) 34pts
3rd Ted Senior (14) 33pts
On Tuesday 27th August a moderate turnout headed off to do battle at
Greenwood (A and C courses) and when I looked to see who had recorded
the best score I immediately thought that a famous old BBC TV soap opera
had moved to Pattaya. Yes, that Eastender Phil Mitchell had muscled his
way into the lead, leaving a trail of fat lips and broken noses in his
wake. Then I remembered that Phil Mitchell was only the characters name
and the real Phil Mitchell was the winner at Greenwood. Fancy having to
go through the last thirty years having to explain you don’t run a pub
in East London.
Welshman Alun Webber (lock up your daughters) returned to Pattaya and
took the runners up spot, only losing out to Phil on count back. For the
second day running father to be Ted Senior took third spot.
![](pictures/s19-TR2.jpg)
Ted Senior
1st Phil Mitchell (6) 35pts
2nd Alun Webber (20) 35pts
3rd Ted Senior (14) 33pts
It was off to Phoenix on Thursday 29th August and as usual we played
Mountain and Lakes as the Ocean course is being extensively rebuilt and
will be out of commission for the next few months.
It was Ted Senior, fed up with coming third, who pulled out all the
stops and marched into first place, shooting an excellent 38pts.
Aberdeen Jimmy took the runners up spot but only just from Antipodean
Steve, Jim winning on count back.
1st Ted Senior (14) 38pts
2nd Jim Cooper (13) 35pts
3rd Steve Smith (20) 35pts
Good luck to all you golfers for the coming week and if you would like
to play a round of golf with the TRGG please phone Fergus Brennan on 086
056 7019 or pop into the Ned Kelly Bar in Soi Lengkee and add your name
to the weekly lists which are posted on the notice board.

Phil & Terry battle for the Monthly Medals
IPGC golf from The Haven
Monday, August 26, Mountain Shadow - Stableford
CSS 72
1st Trevor Schirmer (13) 41pts
2nd Al Rolnik (19) 39pts
3rd Hal Hart (19) 35pts
4th Ben Jackson (15) 34pts
5th Peter Koha (20) 31pts
Under overcast but dry skies the week got off to a good start at the tricky
Mountain Shadow layout that had originally been designed for players with 15
handicaps or less. Although this is one of the shortest courses on the
circuit it usually proves to be one of the most testing with its narrow
fairways and extremely difficult greens. It would appear however to hold
little fear for at least some of the regulars as the scores turned out to be
the best of the week, with even the fourth placed player outscoring the
winners of the other two days.
![](pictures/s20-Haven1.jpg)
Ben Jackson.
Trevor Schirmer took the top spot to dent Al Rolnik’s hopes for a long
awaited win after they both returned their best scores for over two years,
with Trevor proving the toughest over the front nine and ending the day two
points better.
Hal Hart continues to solidify his handicap level as he returned a one over
handicap score to claim third spot just one ahead of Ben Jackson in fourth,
with Peter Koha another three behind him for the last podium placement.
As is fairly usual at Mountain Shadow, due to the severity of the par
threes, there were no 2’s in the second division but very surprisingly there
were three in the first division with Phil Groves, Ben Jackson and Trevor
Schirmer all having one each.
Before the presentations were made there was a welcome back for Alwyne
Burley, whose score for the day had been badly affected by his strained
shoulder occasioned after carrying back some 112 tins of Heinz baked beans
and 8 kilos of Vegemite from Oz. At least Hal Hart was glad to see his
return, having lost six and half kilos in the two weeks that Alwyne had been
absent having had to forego his lobster diet and subsist on mostly dry bread
filled with the odd chip or two.
There was also a welcome back for Mike Hill and a farewell for Toshihiko
Aoki.
Wednesday, August 28, Crystal Bay A & B - Stableford
CSS 75 NC
1st Ben Jackson (15) 33pts
2nd Phil Groves (8) 33pts
3rd Don Everett (19) 32pts
4th Trevor Schirmer (13) 32pts
5th Ian Tanner (20) 30pts
![](pictures/s20-Haven2.jpg)
Phil Groves.
After the successes of the previous outing there were many high hopes of an
even better day at the always easier Crystal Bay where the A and B courses
were the challenge. But even with a ‘lift and place’ in the fairway ruling
for the day, scoring was at a premium with the best being some eight shots
more than Monday’s event.
Some of the difference could be attributed to the wetness of the course,
which affected the distance attained from the shots from the tee, but the
pin placements were also a factor with hardly a one that could have been
regarded as medium difficulty.
Ben Jackson used all his available power to muscle the ball round and
finished in first place after winning a count back over Phil Groves with a
better 20 to 17 after a quiet opening nine, as Phil unfortunately put one in
the water off tee on the par 5 seventeenth to finish with a scratch for the
hole.
![](pictures/s20-Haven3.jpg)
Terry Hodgkiss.
Don Everett also had to win a count back, which he did with a better 17 to
16, to push Trevor Schirmer down to fourth and claim third place for
himself.
Ian Tanner took a little to long to warm up after an expansive supper the
previous evening but a 21 point back nine saw him slip onto the last place
on the day’s podium.
Once again there were no 2’s in either division as the green keeper had
decided that the par threes were playing a little short and therefore sited
the white tees on the blues positions for the day, which also contributed to
the scores spiraling upwards.
Back at The Haven there were farewells for Peter Koha, Ben Jackson and Ian
Tanner who had all had some sort of success during their trip from Perth,
with Ben taking the trophy for the best eclectic results, and all vowed to
return a.s.a.p.
Friday, August 30, Treasure Hill - Monthly Medals
CSS 74 NC
Division 1
1st Phil Groves (8) net 78
2nd Allen Raaen (8) net 78
3rd Mike Dabanovich (13) net 79
4th Jon Batty (8) net 80
Division 2
1st Terry Hodgkiss (23) net 79
2nd Mike Hill (20) net 81
3rd Bruce Hilde (17) net 82
4th Don Everett (19) net 82
With Phoenix still off the schedule due to contractual difficulties, the
month’s medals had been scheduled for Treasure Hill which is never one of
the easier courses, even when playing stableford. The degree of difficulty
rises dramatically when the format is stroke play with the added pressure of
the Monthly Medal at stake and one of the few chances to qualify for the
year end Gold and Silver Medal competitions.
![](pictures/s20-Haven4.jpg)
Trevor Schirmer.
Phil Groves was once again involved in a count back for the top spot of the
day and won it this time, carding a better 37 to 38 to win his first Medal
of the year and become the seventh contender in the first division for the
end of year playoffs. This left Allen Raaen, for once, not at the top of the
list and having to settle for second place.
Mike Dabanovich could have, should have, would have won his first Medal if
he had only managed a double bogey on the 18th, but an inelegant quadruple
bogey consigned him down to third spot, with Jon Batty a close fourth
another one back.
Terry Hodgkiss also won his first Medal since June 2012 to become the ninth
different winner in the second division this year after a difficult day made
more trying by carrying the burden of a badly strained back. So a very good
result in the circumstances as he finished strongly to beat off the
challenge of playing partners Mike Hill, who took second place two further
back, and Don Everett in fourth another one more behind him.
Sandwiched in between Mike and Don was Bruce Hilde who won a count back for
third with a better 39 to 39 over the inward half.
Once again there were no 2’s in either division
Prior to the presentations there was a welcome for new member Robert Moose
and a welcome back for Mark Ward.
Note: If you would like to play with The Haven group, you can contact mobile
082 219 0965 or call in to The Haven Hotel, at 185 Soi 13, between Beach
Road and 2nd Road. All transportation to the course is arranged and you do
not need to sign up prior to the day, but you should be there by 8.15 on
Monday, Wednesday, and Friday on the days that you wish to play. A schedule
of courses to be played can be found on our web site at

The scribe receives a birthday
cake from host Ung & Deiter’s daughter.
Today we had five players all finishing with 37 points, so it meant a little
extra time to sort out back nine scores and then back sixes! In the end
David Lusha romped home on the back nine with 20 points to make him a clear
winner, with two players, Bill Hewitt & John Clift sharing second place and
Jim Neilson & Peter Harris sharing third place.
Near pin prizes went to Werner Schwarz (2) and Jim Neilson, and the one that
no one managed to win was awarded to Fred May as a lucky draw. Other lucky
draw winners (again donated by our hosts The Relax Bar) went to Maurice
Guiney (free massage), John Bartley (free drink) and the 50 baht consolation
went to the birthday boy, yours truly.
Prior to the presentation we were served with a wonderful buffet by our
hosts Ung & Deiter at the Relax Bar to celebrate the scribe’s birthday.

Monday, August 26, Green Valley (white/silver tees) –
Stableford
1st Gary Emmett (17) 39pts
2nd Brian Prudden (19) 39pts
3rd John Pierell (12) 36pts
A fine sunny morning greeted us for our regular venue of Green Valley every
Monday at 9:27. It was an easy drive out and the course was in the usual
great condition, albeit it a bit dry. That is not unusual, as most course
now are feeling the dry spell a wee bit but we should get it while we can as
September is traditionally the wettest month for rainfall in Pattaya.
It turned out to be a fine day as well for our Aussie mate Gary Emmett. Gary
had one of his best rounds in a while with 39 points to share the win with
fellow Antipodean Brian Prudden, playing off the Silver tees. The travelling
golfer John Pierrel took third place on the day.
Wednesday, August 28, Khao Kheow (white tees) – 2-Man Scramble
We had what is starting to become a monthly tradition, a 2-man scramble… but
with a Rainbow thrown in. This is a great way to add a whole new element to
a golf course you thought you were familiar with. You get to choose 6 red, 6
yellow and 6 blue tees and this selection is very much a part of the
strategy of a Rainbow comp.
Jimmy Dundon and John Pierrel ham & cheesed it (another important part of
the game) and walked away with the comp to claim victory for this month’s
scramble. Well played boys!

Golfnutter: Tomorrow’s Tiger Woods – and she’s female
It was early afternoon on Sunday 25 August and the leaders were
preparing to tee off in the LPGA’s Canadian Women’s Open, at the Royal
Mayfair Golf Club in Edmonton, Alberta. In the last grouping was
Caroline Hedwall (the Swede who had just gone 5-0 for Europe in the
previous week’s Solheim Cup – the only golfer to ever do so), Suzanne
Pettersen (the Norwegian who, if she had Anika Sorenstam’s brain, would
already be ranked number one in the world instead of three, and,
amazingly, a 16-yo amateur called Lydia Ko.d Lydia Ko.
Hedwall was the overnight leader at 10-under, with Pettersen and Ko one
shot back. In the field were 23 of the 24 players that had represented
the USA and Europe in the just completed Solheim Cup, as well as
top-ranked Asians including Na Yeon Choi, Jiyai Shin, Yani Tseng, Ai
Miyazato and current world number one, Inbee Park.
Ko became the youngest player ever to win a LPGA event, when she won
this event last year, aged 15 years 4 months. Now, 12 months on and at a
different venue, she would be feeling the weight of expectations that
hadn’t existed 12 months prior. Many in the media, including those
broadcasting the event, thought she would be thereabouts, but none
predicted, let alone imagined, what was to come.
Some digression is warranted.
Lydia Ko was born in Seoul, South Korea in April 1997. Some five years
later, having immigrated to New Zealand, her mother took her into the
pro shop at Pupuke Golf Club in Auckland. There she met club
professional Guy Wilson who agreed to teach the kid some basics. Guy
Wilson has been her coach ever since.
Ko’s promise shone through early with victories in various regional and
national events at a young age. By the time she was in her early teens,
it was obvious to many an erudite eye that this lass was treading where
few have gone before.
She was 14 when she won her first professional tournament; the
Australian LPG sanctioned NSW Open, in January 2012. Later that year she
won the Women’s US Amateur, followed by the LPGA sanctioned Canadian
Women’s Open in Vancouver.
Her next win in a professional event was the European Tour sanctioned NZ
Women’s Open, in February this year. By this stage Lydia’s following and
popularity in NZ meant that the Women’s Open attracted greater crowds
than the men’s equivalent – played at the same venue!
After she won the Canadian Open last year, her school – yes she’s still
at school – held a special assembly for their star golfer. It was no
surprise therefore, when, come Monday morning Kiwi time, Lydia’s
classmates were all huddled around TVs and live-streaming computers
watching the last round of the Canadian Open live.
Students at the Pinehurst School in Albany, near Auckland, were meant to
be sitting mock exams, which Lydia will also sit in October. But
everything at the school came pretty much to a standstill, according to
teacher Vicki Wilson; “We were watching and listening to every shot,
every putt that Lydia made. It was incredible, just absolutely fabulous.
We are all so incredibly proud.”
Now to return to the first tee and Sunday’s leaders, as they prepared to
commence the last round. To say that the pressure on Lydia was a tad
more than last year would be an understatement. She had a significant
portion of a small but sports-mad nation urging her on.
By the time the leaders reached the turn, Lydia had birdied five of the
first nine holes to be 5-under for her round. Her playing partners were
struggling to keep up. When it was all over she had shot a
tournament-best of 64, finishing with a 4-round score of 15-under – five
shots ahead of the field!
Her score was 11 better than one-time leader and world number one Inbee
Park, eight better than world number three and playing partner Pettersen
and six better than Solheim hero Hedwall. The 16-yo amateur wasn’t just
“thereabouts” against the world’s best, as the broadcasters had
predicted, she literally blew them away.
She has now won four professional events from 22 starts. As regards the
LPGA, she has made 14 of 14 cuts with six top-10s and two wins. But the
statistic that is genuinely freakish is that she has now become the
seventh ranked player in women’s golf. She’s still at school remember –
she only plays in selected tournaments here and there.
As much as she doesn’t like them, she had better prepare for another
special assembly when she arrives back home.
To put what Ko has achieved in another perspective, imagine the hype
that would have surrounded Michelle Wie if she had actually won anything
as a teenager?
Lydia Ko – offering a glimpse into the future of women’s golf?
Happy golfing,
Golfnutter
Gymkhana Cricket Club tours Pattaya

Gymkhana Club and Pattaya CC players
pose for a group photo at the Thai Polo Club in Pattaya.
Richard Lockwood
Chiang Mai’s Gymkhana Cricket Club recently made a short tour to Pattaya, which
proved to be an enjoyable prelude to the new season and showed once again the
valuable contribution that is being made to senior cricket by young Thai
players.
Two matches were played against Pattaya Cricket Club at the cricket ground that
has been recently developed at the Thai Polo Club complex. Gymkhana were
delighted to make their first visit to the new ground after Pattaya had played
in a triangular tournament in Chiang Mai in February.
Gymkhana Club’s side was a healthy mixture of young and old, with a collection
of veteran cricketers very grateful for the support of three talented young
Thais.
Cher is a member of the Hill Tribe Program and arrived last Saturday morning on
the bus from Lamphun, while Bank learnt his cricket at school in Chiang Mai and
has taken up the game once more on his return from the US. Nithi played cricket
while he was living in Australia and is delighted to have another chance to play
now he is back in Thailand.
Saturday’s match was a 30-over aside encounter and Cher impressed from the start
by bowling 5 overs for just 7 runs and claiming the wicket of John Guiffrada.
Jon Danby and Martin Papworth bowled tightly but John Speirs made 50 before
retiring.
Bank then ripped through the middle-order of the Pattaya team with figures of 3
for 24 as he hit the stumps three times and three more wickets fell in three
balls, two wickets to Eddie Joyner and a run out, to bring a hectic end to the
innings.
Pattaya finished on 142 for 7 in their 30 overs and Nithi launched Gymkhana’s
reply with an array of shots mostly in the air which brought him 37 runs at
better than a run a ball. Bank retired hurt with cramp but soon returned to make
a composed 30.
71 for 2 quickly became 75 for 5 but the reliable Papworth added 30 for the
sixth wicket with Bank, and then it was left to Cher to hit some lusty blows to
bring Gymkhana to the brink of victory.
A boundary was needed off the last ball but Gymkhana finished just short on 140
for 8 and Pattaya had won by 2 runs, Speirs taking 2 for 12 in 4 overs to go
alongside his half-century. Speirs was awarded man of the match for Pattaya,
while 16-year-old Cher was deservedly given man of the match for Gymkhana.
Celebrations went on long into the night and Sunday’s match was a much more
one-sided encounter with Pattaya winning by 81 runs as a total of 149 for 6 in
20 overs proved far too many. Cher, Bank and Nithi each claimed a wicket, but
Bank was the only batsman who reached double figures as Gymkhana were bowled out
for 68.
Pattaya were the stronger side on this occasion and plans are already being made
for their next visit to Chiang Mai early next year. The club are also hoping for
a pavilion and practice nets to be built in the next year which will mean Thai
Polo Club will quickly establish itself as a top class venue for cricket in
Thailand.
The Gymkhana Club players returned to Chiang Mai ready to practice hard for the
new season and already looking ahead to next year’s visit to Pattaya as the two
clubs look to build a close friendship on and off the field.

Pattaya Sports Club Fishing Trip Report - August 2013
Our trips this past month have been well attended, with 6 or
7 participants on every trip, but it is fair to say that the conditions have
been quite challenging at times, and catches have been variable, although every
time at least one or two have come away with an icebox-full of good fish.
![](pictures/s26-Fishing.jpg)
Enjoy a great day’s sea fishing with
the PSC.
On Saturday 10th August, members reported that at least 10
different species of fish were caught, although few of any remarkable size. They
went back to the Ko Ran Kwian rocks which had provided good sport in July, but
were plagued by a shoal of immature Yellowtails which kept taking the bait, and
which most members rightly saw fit to return to the sea. Solly provided the
chief entertainment of the day with an overenthusiastic cast which took his rod
and reel overboard.
On Tuesday 20th we set out in a stiff south-westerly breeze, and for the first
hour or two sheltered in the lee of Ko Khram, but very few fish were caught.
Charlie had the best start with a fine snapper. Later on the wind dropped a
little and on several drifts outside Ko Khram most of us produced a worthwhile
haul of snapper and pla daeng, with the occasional decent-sized grouper. Peter
caught a nice grey and a snapper in quick succession. Strangely, the fish just
disappeared later in the afternoon and the last hour or so was very quiet.
The wind on Saturday 24th was again quite strong, and Colin reported that most
of the morning was spent clinging to the rails as the boat skipper tried his
luck in the race outside Ko Khram. The gamble failed as few fish were caught, so
they moved to drifting in the Khram Channel and started to catch some good fish.
Dang was again the star performer (how does she do it?), landing a small shark
as well as several greys and pla daeng. The wind kept up throughout the day,
which discouraged any further excursions into less sheltered waters.
In September the South-West monsoon should be abating, so we hope conditions
will allow us a wider choice of locations to drop our hooks. Our trips are
booked for Saturday 7th, Tuesday 10th, Saturday 21st and Thursday 26th
September. There are spaces available on all these trips, and we always welcome
newcomers who can hire rods and tackle if required. Our charges per trip,
including bait, are PSC members 1500 baht, non-members 1750 baht.

Thai youngster aims for
the big time in Formula 1
![](pictures/s27-Stuvik1.jpg)
Thailand’s rising race star - Sandy
Sturvik.
Eighteen year old Thai racing driver Sandy Kraokaew Stuvik,
who is currently competing for the European Formula 3 Open Championship title,
is being keenly watched by the European racing community who have noted the
exploits of this newcomer from Thailand. Not only has Sandy performed well above
expectations this year, but he is leading the championship with just 3 race
weekends left of the season.
Sandy has one race win and 6 podium finishes so far this campaign and is
bringing a sense of pride back to Thai motorsport, with the national anthem
being heard at European racetracks for the first time in decades.
Having learnt to drive go-karts in Thailand since the age of 4, Sandy steadily
progressed until he won the Asian Karting Championship, aged just 12. He then
turned his attention towards Formula racing and at 14 he spent an entire year on
improving his physical conditioning and practicing on circuits in Thailand,
Malaysia and China in Formula BMW and Formula Renault cars.
When he was 15 years old, he took part in the Asian Formula Renault Championship
and won the first race, even though he was the youngest racer in the field and
he would later go on to win the championship with podium finishes in every race,
the first Thai driver to ever win this championship.
![](pictures/s27-Stuvik2.jpg)
Stuvik is currently racing in the
European Formula 3 Open championship for the RP Motorsport team.
After this achievement, Sandy shifted focus towards the
highest levels of racing - Europe. He signed up for the international Formula
Renault Eurocup series, an event that brought together the 36 best young drivers
from all over the world.
Racing at the European level, as the youngest driver in the field, he had to
learn the full gamut of racing skills; from driving in freezing cold weather,
studying all the circuits, tire management, cars, engines and race teams etc.
The learning curve was enormous and considering he was racing against rivals
with several years experience in the series, he did well to finish 28th in his
first year and 14th in his second year.
In 2013, after being spotted by the championship winning Italian race team RP
Motorsport, Sandy was invited to compete in the European Formula 3 Open
championship. A championship that runs over 30 cars and uses the latest
evolution of Dallara’s high down force F312 formula cars.
With 2 years of European racing experience under his belt and extensive training
at the Shape Driver Center in Italy, plus coaching by Neel Jani, a former Red
Bull F1 test-driver, Sandy responded by taking a 4th and a 1st place in his
first Formula 3 race weekend at the Paul Ricard circuit in France. He
immediately took the European F3 Open championship lead and after races at
Portimao, Nürburgring and Silverstone he has continued to hold on to this lead.
However, even though he is the current leader of the championship, Sandy is
keeping himself firmly grounded and well prepared.
“So far my season has been very good, I’m very happy with where I am at the
moment but I also understand that it is now time to improve my results to
constant podiums if I want to finish the championship in first place,” he
stated. “I am glad to not have been involved in any incidents so far, and I
think the consistency of the team and myself throughout the season has helped us
stay where we want to stay.”
Sandy has already been approached by both GP2 teams and Formula 1 teams with the
intention to bring him in as a potential Formula 1 driver in the future. At the
moment he is in negotiations for participation in the GP2 series, the main
feeder series for Formula 1.
Sandy himself has a single goal, which is to become a F1 racer within 3 years.
Even though motorsports still does not attract wide attention from the Thai
public, the Kingdom now has a unique formula racer whose eye-catching
performances are proving that he could soon become the first Formula 1 racer
from Thailand in modern times.
The 6th round of the European Formula 3 Open championship will be held on 7th
and 8th September 2013, at Spa-Francorchamps Circuit in Belgium. You can follow
Sandy’s progress via live streaming broadcast on the official website:

Last gasp United topple
high-flying Suphanburi

League fixture at the Nongprue Stadium in Pattaya, Sunday, Sept. 1. (Photo

A 92nd minute own goal by Suphanburi defender Pairote Sokam
gave Pattaya United a vital 1-0 home win last Sunday at the Nongprue Stadium and
enabled the Dolphins to, temporarily at least, leapfrog Chiangrai United in the
relegation dog-fight.
Suphanburi’s early season good form appears to have deserted them in recent
weeks but they still came into last weekend’s match as firm favourites to take
all three points. As it transpired, the game was a rather dull affair with
neither team able to carve out any clear cut chances as both defences dominated
proceedings. The nearest either team came to scoring in normal time was when
Pattaya’s Jeera Jarernsuk slipped past the Suphanburi goalkeeper in the second
half but could only find the side-netting with his shot.
With the clock ticking into the second minute of injury time it seemed both
teams would have to be content with a point, but a long clearance by Pattaya was
chased down by striker Efe Obode and as he challenged Sokam, the Suphanburi
defender contrived to head the ball over his own keeper and into an empty net.
The significance of the goal and the subsequent win was not lost on the United
supporters who celebrated long after the final whistle. United have now won
three of their last five matches and are finally heading in the right direction
up the league table. The Dolphins will be looking for another morale boosting
win when they take on BEC Tero Sasana in Pattaya this coming Saturday, kick-off
at 6 p.m.
Things are also hotting up at the top end of the table with Buriram taking over
from Muang Thong United at the head of the standings after the latter could only
draw at Police United. Chonburi remain third following their 2-1 home win over
Chainat.
