Can still get cheap flights from the UK
Editor;
Re: Expat life (PM Mailbag Friday, 07 February 2014) - You can still get
cheap flights from the UK though, which is what I’ve just done. I usually
find that 4 weeks in a noisy man-made paradise is enough for me before the
novelty’s worn off. Now all I have to do is conquer my fear of airports and
flying... again!

We would all like some hope
Editor;
Re: Caretaker PM Yingluck asks protesters not to disrupt tomorrow’s polls -
(PM Saturday, 01 February 2014) - I support the Democrat Party’s efforts to
depose the government. Representative democracy is an extortion racket. But
from what I’m seeing, they don’t seem to convey any intellectual or coherent
framework of ideas that would give them the credibility to precipitate
anything other than tyranny. If I am wrong, please draw my attention to some
‘manifesto’ of principled ideas which could give one any convince. I’m
trying to see hope in them...for we would all like some of that.

Expats want more
Editor;
Re: Expat life (PM Mailbag Friday, 07 February 2014) - “The hard truth is,
expat life has never been viable for people who do not have substantial
savings/pensions/incomes”. No, the hard truth is that expat life in a third
world country is very affordable, but that is not what most expats want so
they end up paying a lot more.

Stop in space?
Editor;
Re: Thai woman to travel in space (PM Monday, 10 February 2014) - Stop in
space? Not quite - the upper portion of the trajectory amounts to a glide
where the vehicle reaches maximum altitude before starting the descent
toward landing. In order to “stop” there would need to be additional thrust
to “hold the position against the pull of gravity”. They will be “ballistic”
- just like throwing a rock into the air.

Friend persuaded me to come to Pattaya
Editor;
Re: Stuck in the UK (PM Mailbag Friday, 31 January 2014) - Phil, I know
exactly how you feel. Luckily I didn’t have any money problems but I can
remember sitting in my armchair in January 2011 watching the rain come down
and thinking to myself that I was just waiting to die.
A friend persuaded me to come to Pattaya in that February and a friend of
his introduced me to a lady who has been my wife now for that last 18
months. I am living again and am happier than I have been for years. Don’t
despair - save up and get here!

Would give it a miss
Editor;
Re: The next recession (PM Mailbag Friday, 07 February 2014) - Silly me! I
never knew you had to have a Thai with a 51% stake in a condo. Then again I
consider even if I were rich enough to invest money in a venture that would
lose me money I would give it a miss.
Why would I not invest my savings on long term deposit and rent a property?
Even if the interest were just above the inflation rate it would be to my
advantage as I would be free to up stakes whenever I wanted without the
hassles of trying to off-load what I consider a “Lemon”. With the apartments
for sale at the moment at saturation level, who wants to buy a second hand
one when they would most likely buy a new one cheaper?
I could boast to my family and friends how I was a grand “Land Holder” and
Mum could tell all her friends how Bubba made the big time in Thailand.
Cast your mind back to a series on the BBC where British people were all
heading to Spain to teach the natives how things should be done. Only to be
ripped off by both the locals & their own countrymen. This is “the passing
parade” in Pattaya at the moment.
OK so I am not so smart. I had a house built on my wife’s land, but I went
into it with my eyes open knowing I had absolutely no stake in the property.
Nothing palatial just a 2 bedroom house with outside kitchen. All work done
by the village tradesmen. No Farang real estate man involved. After 12 years
of marriage things have worked out fine.
If you have gone into buying a 3 bed 4 bath condo with European kitchen, all
I can say is som nam na.

Russians working there
Editor;
Re: DSI meets with tour operators to discuss Russian guide complaints (PM
Friday, 07 February 2014) - I guarantee there are illegal Russians working
there. Just look at all the tourist companies catering to Russians, even
being staffed by Russians. I don’t see any tourist company booths or kiosks
with American or English or Scandinavian citizens.

Can’t follow your logic
Editor;
Re: The next recession (PM Mailbag Friday, 07 February 2014) - I can’t quite
follow your logic here. Foreigners can buy units in Thai quota by forming a
Thai company (although most choose not to). If the market value of Thai
quota properties falls dramatically vs. foreign though, then more may be
tempted to do so.
The system whereby only 49% of units can be sold to foreigners actually
ring-fences apartments owned under foreign names as it gives, in effect, two
markets with one having only a marginal effect upon the other.
