Nissan can make
more improvements

Re: Nissan Teana - all the bells and whistles and no chauffeur’s hat (PM
Automania Friday, 31 January 2014) - Don’t get me wrong, I like Nissan and
have 4 parked outside my home that I’ve purchased new in the last 2 years.
You say the car is full of “Options” yet options are optional and Nissan
does not do that in Thailand. You buy the model you want in the color you
choose and it comes that way. As for limousine, which would infer to lots of
rear legroom, some of their smaller models, like the Almera has more legroom
at half the price. So when I am driving I have to be careful when I turn it
off as the seat goes back and crushes the back passengers legs. And 8 kpl is
dismal and last in its class. More improvements can be made by Nissan.

Anyone agree?

After living here for 14 years, and having had over 50 letters to the editor
printed in the Post, Nation, P-Mail, and P-Today, I would again like to put
in my 2-cents worth after a hiatus of a couple years. Probably the most
clever rip-off I have seen in my time here is True Vision. They show 10 to
20 year old films over and over and over, albeit they do toss in an
occasional Golden Oldie or a new release as a tease. Same with their music
channels. What they do is buy a block of programming at fire sale prices,
and then show them over and over... must be the mentality that everyone is a
two week tourist and couldn’t care less or even watch TV. The TV guide is
impossible to inform you of anything, so I just pitch it as soon as it comes
in the mail. Absolutely no Olympics coverage and no Premier League, yet
snooker gets front row seat? Lastly, why is there a logo in each upper
corner telling us that is it True Vision and what show we are already
watching, (paranoid about someone taping their program... no one would
bother) and those ‘pop-ups’ are enough to drive you around the bend. Well,
it’s beer time and nice to be back ‘word smithing’...

Re: Beware the beach scammers (PM Friday, 14 February 2014) – Rule No 2
should read - you have been warned and nobody will help you. If you decide
to ignore Rule No 1 you should expect it to cost you in the tens of
thousands of baht that you could have used to enjoy your hard earned
holiday.
Rule No 3 - refer to rule No 1 which is “NEVER rent a jet ski in Thailand”!

Re: “Smoking laws should be enforced”. First of all, you should be aware
that a couple of months ago the World Health Organization issued the
findings of research on air pollution. In a nutshell they reported that air
pollution from motor vehicle exhaust, industrial smoke and home cooking was
found to be carcinogenic and was causing cancer in human beings. Nothing was
mentioned about second hand smoke, obviously because the volume of S.H.S. in
the air is minuscule compared to the other sources, all of which also enter
enclosed spaces.
It has now been proven that not only has second hand smoke not been the
perpetrator in the case of non smokers getting cancer, but it is now also
impossible to prove that smoking is the main cause of cancer in smokers.
As all of the draconian laws, insults and taxes placed on smokers was a
result of the U.S. Surgeon Generals report on second hand smoke, and as that
report has now been proven to be incomplete at best, it would seem that
demanding unjust laws be enforced is a little out of line.
Not one English language Bangkok paper reported on the W.H.O. findings and
as both refused to print an article I sent them demanding justice for
smokers, it seems that what you should be demanding is an apology from
fanatical non smokers, governments and tax collectors for those of us that
were tormented for three decades.
I sincerely hope that you are fair enough to acknowledge the truth of what I
am saying and will now stop concerning yourself about second hand smoke that
has never killed anyone.

Re: DSI meets with tour operators to discuss Russian guide complaints (PM
Friday, 07 February 2014) - Kind of reminds of my first visit to Thailand,
and our Thai tour guide only taking us to places like World Gems, locking us
into all day tours to Bangkok to pad those ‘kickbacks’. On my second visit,
I got smart, hired a local Thai of my own choosing to take me around. I’ve
been friends with her family for over a decade now.

Home is where the heart is

Although I have lived here a 1/4 of my life & would not change it. It was on
26 January that I found where my true loyalties lie. Being Australia Day I
had read where back home (?) there were BBQ’s, street parades and a giant
fireworks display. The best I could do here would have been a can of Fosters
at an Aussie Bar.
Deciding to have a quiet night instead, I booted up my computer and looked
for something Australian. By chance I hit on that great Aussie poet, “Banjo
Paterson” and watched a trailer of the “Man from Snowy River”. This is an
epic tale of the rough riding horsemen of the Australian Alps. I am not
ashamed to admit that it bought tears to my eyes. You must understand that
our history only goes back a little over 200 years. England has its
Shakespeare & Ireland has its Bards, America has its Gen E Lee & Colonel
Custer but they are outshone by an Irish emigrant. A Catholic Pope once
said, “Give me a child to his seventh year & I will have him for life.”
Looks like that is also true about the place you were born.
Next week “Clancy of the Overflow”. (Man from Snowy River, No one shot or
punched, no animal seriously hurt.)
