Hunter & Clouseau sparkle at Crystal Bay
PSC golf from The Growling Swan

Alain Taddei & Mike Gosden.
Peter Blackburn
Monday, March 3, Crystal Bay, C & A –
Stableford
There were 18 of us signed up to play the popular
Crystal Bay Golf Course and we met at The Growling Swan in readiness for the
journey north up No. 3. Not a big field and with the help of Mark West &
Alain Taddei we required only one mini-van and departed the GS five minutes
early at 8.25 a.m.
Upon arrival the course was fairly quiet and we got our first group, a
three-ball, away 15 minutes ahead of schedule at 9.45 a.m.
The weather was hot with some wind and the golf course was in good shape,
with the greens being very well maintained and with no-one immediately in
front of us we set a very good pace. Things did slow down with three holes
to go as we caught up with the groups ahead but we still managed to complete
our full round in the very good time of three hours & fifty minutes. It had
been once again a very enjoyable round of golf with first class company.
We had 2 Divisions – Division A for handicaps 0 to 16 & Division B for
golfers on handicaps of 17 and over with three places in each Division.
There were also rewards for nearest the pin on two of the four par 3’s and
longest first putts on the A9 & C9 greens.
![](pictures/s10-GS76-2.jpg)
Russell Calcutt, Ebrahim & Martin
Todd.
The A Division winner was Mike “Hunter”
Gosden who continued his good form and had 38 points, with Mark “Westy” West
finishing second on 37 and Steve Truelove third with 36.
Alain “Inspector Clouseau” Taddei was the winner in B Division with 38
points, one point better than Ken Hole in second place and Geri Crilly was
third on 35.
Division A (0-16)
1st Mike Gosden (11) 38pts
2nd Mark West (14) 37pts
3rd Steve Truelove (8) 36pts
Division B (17+)
1st Alain Taddei (18) 38pts
2nd Ken Hole (18) 37pts
3rd Geri Crilly (27) 35pts
Near Pins: A8 – Alain Taddei, C4 – Alain Taddei
Long Putts: A9 – Mark West, C9 – Steve Truelove
The Growling Swan NAGA Award, (awarded to the golfer who has the worst score
on the day and discreetly their score is not made public) was won by Frank
“Woody” Donnelly who accepted the award like the good sport that he is.
Thursday, March 6, Mt. Shadow – Stableford
Mountain Shadow was the challenge on this
particular Thursday and after a couple of withdrawals we were left with a
very good field of 31 to take on this fairly tough golf course. As we were
all on time (even Patrick) we got away from the GS in 3 mini vans 3 minutes
ahead of schedule at 8.27 am and after a good run arrived at the course 44
minutes later. It was not too busy so we had a quick practice putt and
headed down to the first tee where we waited just 10 minutes before we were
able to send our first group, a three-ball away 15 minutes earlier than
booked at 9.45 am.
The weather was hot with a nice breeze to cool things down somewhat and the
golf course was as usual in very good shape, with most greens being quite
fast so the order of the day was keep the ball below the hole on the greens
otherwise look out!
The pace was quite good with very few delays and after going through the
first nine in one hour and fifty minutes things slowed down a bit and we
completed the full round in exactly four hours. Great golf course, terrific
company so what more can you ask for?
I must just mention than I decided we should play off the blue tees as at
5,876 yards; playing off the white tees would have made it too short but it
did catch a lot of us out as there were only 2 golfers who were able to play
to their handicap or better – Mountain Shadow 29, Growling Swan 2!
We had 3 Divisions – Division A for handicaps 0 to 15, Division B for
golfers on handicaps of 16 to 25 and Division C for handicaps of 26 & over
with four places in each Division. There were also rewards for nearest the
pin on the four par 3’s and longest first putts on the 9th & 18th greens.
The winner in Division A was Martin “Toddy” Todd with 34 points and with 2
golfers tied on 32 points a count back was required which resulted in your
humble correspondent Peter “Blacky” Blackburn (17 point back nine) finishing
in second place from Paul Avery (14 point back nine) in third spot, with
Frankie Sharratt in fourth on 31.
The best score of the day went to Ebrahim who won Division B with a terrific
40 points, 5 clear of 2 players who were tied on 35 points and the resultant
count back saw Ian Jessiman (19 point back nine) finish second from Duangjai
“Kae” Tusagad (18 point back nine) in third spot. Rita Zoebelli completed
the podium in fourth on 33.
After just a few hours sleep it was “beware the sick golfer” in C Division
as Russell Calcutt shook off his woes and his 38 points gave him first
place, 8 points clear of second placed Andrew “Turtle” Allen. Dick
Braimbridge came third with 29 points and the returning Nolan “No-one” Wise
was fourth with 27.
Division A (0-15)
1st Martin Todd (8) 34pts
2nd Peter Blackburn (13) 32pts
3rd Paul Avery (10) 32pts
4th Frank Sharratt (13) 31pts
Division B (16-25)

2nd Ian Jessiman (22) 35pts
3rd Duangjai Tusagad (18) 35pts
4th Rita Zoebelli (25) 33pts
Division C (26+)
1st Russell Calcutt (36) 38pts
2nd Andrew Allen (32) 30pts
3rd Dick Braimbridge (36) 29pts
4th Nolan Wise (35) 27pts
Near Pins: 5th – Martin Todd, 8th – Peter Blackburn, 15th – Tom McMahon,
17th – Ken Hole

Tight contest at 17th Pattaya AmAm golf tourney
![](pictures/s11-AmAm-1.jpg)
The winning team: Keith Evans,
Russell Exley, Clive Hall and Terry Hutchings with Lumyai.
Monday, March 3, Khao Kheow - Stableford
Results:
1st Keith Evans (6), Russell Exley (7), Clive Hall (11), Terry Hutchings
(14) - 79
2nd Chris Smith (2), Wichai Tanasusorn (5), Alan Flynn (8), Vic Woolton (10) -
77
3rd Andrew Purdie (8), Steve Jones (8), Garry Hookey (12), Brian Shaw (14) - 76
4th Neville Duncan (8), Russell Gilroy (14), Ray Beavis (16), Frank Dunstan (18)
- 74
5th Alan Hanlon (10), Shuichi Kodaka (14), Mike Armstrong (14), Mike Hill (17) -
73
The 17th Pattaya Am-Am, held over the testing and beautifully prepared A and B
courses at Khao Kheow, turned out to be less well supported than usual but was a
much appreciated event by those that did take part.
![](pictures/s11-AmAm-2.jpg)
Runners up: Chris Smith, Wichai
Tanasusorn, Alan Flynn and Vic Woolton.
The format as usual was Stableford scoring with handicaps rounded to the nearest
whole number after making a deduction of 25 % and allowing for two team member’s
scores to count on each hole, without any restriction on the number of times a
player’s score could be counted.
The conditions for the day were fairly difficult with a strong wind that greatly
affected club selection and punished anything with any deviation from straight
off the club face. It also appeared to be in the player’s faces on most of the
holes no matter which direction they faced and this affected the end results,
placing them well below the expected levels.
It did however make for a very tight contest between the final top five teams
with just six shots separating them all, with the winners just edging in front
over the last few holes to win by two points. In fact the winning team of Keith,
Russell, Clive and Terry started very well with 18 points from the first four
holes but then slipped a bit to finish the nine on 35 points, but a stunning
back nine gave them the best of any nine on the day of 44 points, with 17 of
them coming on the last three holes.
![](pictures/s11-AmAm-3.jpg)
Third placed team: Andrew Purdie,
Steve Jones, Garry Hookey and Brian Shaw.
The second placed team was led by the lowest handicap player in the field, Chris
Smith, who was ably supported by Wichai, Alan and Vic. They had started
favourites on the lowest total handicaps but a poor finish that saw them garner
just six points from the last two holes put paid to their chances of the top
spot for this year, having to settle for an honourable second place.
Third place went to the team comprising Andrew, Steve, Garry and Brian who ran
very close behind just one point back. They had started out very slowly, with a
two over front nine, but improved over the inward half with a six under total.
The fourth place team were representing the Wakefield Club in Sydney and
remembering the old stalwart Rodney Hayes, who had been a regular in this event
up until his still mourned demise last year. They turned in a card that was two
back from third with a better back nine of 39 after starting out with five
dropped shots on the front half.
Last on the podium was the team made up of Alan, Shuichi, Mike and Mike, the
sole representatives of The Haven amongst the winners, as they also suffered
from too many dropped shots over both nines.
The prize giving ceremony was as usual performed at The Haven with Emcee Stephen
Beard ably assisted by his wife Lamyai who presented the winners trophies.
There were thanks for all those that had made the day such a success which
included the players, the organizers, especially Len Jones and Russell Exley,
and the catering staff who had provided such a superb buffet that included many
home made cakes and pastries which left all the attendees totally sated.
The evening really got started following the traditional blowing of the horn by
the host in honour of Lamyai’s birthday and the more serious matters were
discussed at length together with the obligatory “if only” stories, assisted by
a few wet ones and continued late into the night.

2nd Freddy Starbeck (15) net 69
3rd Dave Driscoll (14) net 69
B Flight
1st Tom Gorey (18) net 72
2nd Colin Davis (20) net 72
3rd Nick Shaw (20) net74
The final day at Green Valley had the field abuzz as the pressure
mounted. Regrettably Mike Allidi managed somehow to incur three penalty
points in his net 74 return to dash his hopes of winning, but he did
manage third place with a total of 289. Kevin Rogers, showing the
stamina one would expect from a man of his fitness and relative youth,
almost pulled of a stunning upset with a net 72 total of 286.
![](pictures/s13-Lewiinskis-2.jpg)
Plate winner Paul Shaw (center) with Bruce
Walters and Reg McKay.
The winner however was Freddy Starbeck, who can now add yet another
entry to his extensive golf port folio. Freddy was universally acclaimed
as a worthy champion with his own designed golf swing; his net 69gave
him a winning total of280.
Freddy’s score was not the highest of the day as the man of the match
honours went to Ranay Singh with a stunning net 66.
The Plate
A Flight
1st Reg McKay (12) 36pts
2nd Paul Shaw (8) 35pts
3rd Chaten Patel (12) 35pts
B Flight
1st Alain Taddei (18)37pts
2nd Charles Cunningham (17) 36pts
3rd Lou Szigligeti (17) 35 pts
C Flight
1st Bruce Walters (30) 37pts
2nd Jorn Finnerup (25) 33pts
3rd Martin Allard (23) 31pts
In the Plate comp, Paul Shaw coupled a 35 with his previous round of 39
for a winning 74 points over Buckie Boy Reg McKay’s two-day total of 72.
Bruce Walters took the third spot with 71 points overall.
Colin and Captain Christy Knight acted as co-masters of ceremony at the
presentation dinner and thanked all present for their participation in
such a unique, demanding and interesting test of golf. The field
responded with plaudits for the vision and execution that makes the 2015
Lewiinski’s Open, to be held next February, a much anticipated event.
The new champion Freddy rang the bell to celebrate his victory.
Monday, March 3, Greenwood A & C - Stableford
A Flight
1st Matt Cronin (15) 38pts
2nd Walter Baechli (17) 30pts
3rd Ed Wyckoff (11) 30pts
B Flight
1st Jim Shaw (29) 35pts
2nd Gerry Roche (22) 34pts
3rd Jorn Finnerup (25) 33pts
It was a somewhat smaller than usual field due to Sunday’s Lewiinski’s
championship and the following party. Irishman Matt Cronin took the day
with a man of the match 38 points and he was also the only player to
better par on the day.
Old friends Walter Baechli and Ed ‘our man in the white house’ Wyckoff
went to a count back for second place, both locked on 30 points, with Ed
gaining the worst of it.
Jim Shaw took the top spot in B Flight with 35 points and this left a
pair of ‘Mick’s to fill the minor places. Gerry Roche took the silver a
shot back as Jorn Finnerup garnered the bronze a further stroke back,
but Jorn had the last laugh as he slotted home the only 2 of the day.
Tuesday, March 4, Burapha C & D – Stableford
A Flight
1st Paul Shaw (8) 41pts
2nd Max Scott (6) 38pts
3rd Les Scott (11) 37pts
B Flight
1st Terry Mangan (17) 40pts
2nd Paul Hack (14) 38pts
3rd Freddy Starbeck (14) 36pts
C Flight
1st Colin Davis (20) 39pts
2nd Barry Oats (20) 37pts
3rd Mick Coghlan (21) 36pts
Paul Shaw had been inspecting his handicap construct lately, feeling it
deserving of some upward movement. Well forget that, as Paul put
together a magnificent 41 point effort at the David Graham and Garry
Parks designed Burapha today.
Aussie star Max Scott continued his fine play by tacking the silver with
a rock solid 38 points and in a quite ceremony, Less Cobban edged the
consistent Bruce Walters on count back for third as both returned 37
points. Bruce did however get a share of the 2’s pot, as did eight other
players.
County Wicklow’s Terry ‘pork chop ‘Mangan, with the second best score of
the day, stood on the top spot on the B Flight podium with a excellent
40 points. Aussie Paul Hack took the silver spot with a solid 37 points
and he was two clear of the Lewiinski’s new club champion, ‘Fantastic’
Freddy Starbeck.
The Donkey got back to winning ways as he took the gold in C Flight with
a sound 39 points. Barry Oats took the silver on 37 points as Mick
Coghlan tided up the flight with an even par round.
Wednesday, March 5, Royal Lakeside
A Flight
1st Freddy Starbeck (14) 37pts
2nd Dominic Downey (12) 35pts
3rd Ed Wyckoff (11) 33pts
B Flight
1st Roland Bangerter (19) 36pts
2nd Charles Cunningham (18) 34pts
3rd Matt Cronin (15) 33pts
C Flight
1st Christy Knight (23) 40pts
2nd John Hartigan (20) 34pts
3rd Brian (K) Kent (25) 34pts
Top performer on the day was Captain Christy ‘Good’ Knight who led from
the front, as do all good captains (I can hear Jimmy from hear).
Christy’s 40 point masterpiece was six clear of fellow ‘Mick’ John
Hartigan, and Brian (k) Kent, with the luck of the Irish prevailing.
In A Flight it was the never ending story of Freddy Starbeck as he
continues to amaze. Freddy’s 37 points took the gold and he was two
clear of Dominic Downey. Two mates were seen fighting it out for the
last spot, but it was Matt Cronin who counted up the better than Les
Cobban.
B Flight provided the most modest of winning scores as Roland Bangerter
took the top step with an even par round. The always in the money
Charles Cunningham filled the second step of the podium with 34 points
and Matt Cronin rounded out the flight and the day with a count back
success over the unlucky Tore Eliaseen.
Les Cobban and Colin Smith split the 2’s pot.
Thursday, march 6, Silky Oak – Stableford
A Flight
1st Freddy Starbeck (14) 40pts
2nd Walter Baechli (17) 35pts
3rd Laurie McBride (14) 34pts
B Flight
1st Gerry Roche (22) 34pts
2nd Eddie Henshaw (27) 33pts
3rd Barry Oats (20) 33pts
A slate of 26 golfers were no match for the in-form man of the moment,
Freddy ‘Super’ Starbeck. Nearest to Freddy in A Flight was nice guy
Walter Baechli who was five shots adrift and Irishman Laurie McBride was
a further stoke back as he closed the flight.
The laurels in B Flight went to Irishman Gerry Roche on 34 points. The
lower podium places were decided on a count back with Eddie Henshaw
edging the unlucky Barry Oats for the silver.
Jim Elphick wore the biggest smile of the day as he was the sole heir to
the 2’s pot.
Friday, march 7, Pattavia Century – Stableford
A Flight
1st Pat Regan (15) 38pts
2nd Dominic Downey (12) 37pts
3rd Freddy Starbeck (14) 36pts
B Flight
1st Merle Humphreys (19) 38pts
2nd Roland Bangerter (19) 33pts
3rd Michael Beat (24) 32pts
A long drive turned out to be worthwhile for those who made the effort
as Pattavia Century was in excellent condition and the cost is one of
the best in value.
The game was well contested as both A Flight and B Flight winners were
co-men of the match. Ireland’s Pat Regan was the top boy in A Flight as
his 38 points was one clear of fellow Irishman Dominic Downey and a
further shot clear of the man in form, Freddy Star beck. Freddy’s week
includes his fine club championship win, two flight wins and two third
places - a remarkable feat.
Merle Humphreys was five shots ahead of Roland Bangerter to won the B
Flight as Michael Beat closed the flight and the week’s proceedings.
Pat Reagan and Roland Bangerter split the 2’s pot.

A quiet day at Emerald
The Backyard Golf Society
![](pictures/s14-Backyard.jpg)
Mickey (center rear) celebrates
his win with the staff at the Candy Bar.
It was a very overcast day for the
Backyard Boys at the Emerald on Friday, March 7. The clouds kept the sun at
bay the whole round so the temperature didn’t go too high, a nice way to
play golf.
It was noted by all that it was a far quicker round today; the course wasn’t
jam packed like the few previous weeks and it seems low season is on its
way, which always makes some of us happy. Quite a few of our lads have gone
back home and others back to work so our group was down to seven today.
Mickey came first in the comp today with 38points and he sank some very nice
putts. JJ ran him a close second with 37 while the ‘Quiet Man’ came third
with 36.
The skins were dished out evenly with Mickey and ‘Foos yer doos’ getting
four apiece, ‘Randyman’ and the ‘Quiet Man’ had three each while Mike and JJ
shared two between them.
‘Randyman’ took the near pin at the short par-three 15th.
After the presentations we headed into town for some drinks where the winner
stood his hand as has become traditional in our little band.

Bramley makes it a double
Travellers Rest Golf Group
![](pictures/s15-TR76.jpg)
Neil Bramley.
Andy Rich
Player of the week this week was undoubtedly Neil Bramley, although
Billy Allan gave him a run for his money. Noel Larkin and Mike Rushant
also get an honourable mention in dispatches.
I played with Neil, he of the reverse grip, on Monday and just for once
my driving was good and I passed the two hundred plus marker on numerous
occasions. It was a bit disheartening then when I saw Neil’s ball a
further hundred yards down the fairway, mostly arriving there with a
shapely draw. Unfortunately on Monday the awesomely tricky greens at
Pattavia lay in wait for the unsuspecting golfer and it was these that
did for Neil and he only finished among the also-rans. He made up for it
later in the week however by finishing top of the leader board on two
occasions.
Cheeky chappie and all-round good sort Billy Allan, just back from Aus
but still sporting a very distinct Scouse (Liverpool) accent had the
biggest win of the week, winning his division by six clear points and
also finishing in the top three on two other days. Asked his secret for
his golfing success he told me he trains on beer and by the end of each
round he always sees at least two and sometimes three holes to aim for
on each green.
Noel Larkin and Mike Rushant also finished in the prize money on two
occasions.
Monday, March 3, Pattavia - Stableford
As stated, on Monday the TRGG headed off to do
battle with Pattavia and looking at the final scores for the day I can
categorically tell you the course won.
In Division 1, Graham Johnson recorded the best round of the day by
amassing 35 points, closely followed by Jim Cooper in second and regular
winner Alan Thomas in third.
In Division 2 I can only describe the winning scores as pitiful.
Irishman Noel Larkin just made it to 30 points, with Billy Allen in
second and yours truly, Andy Rich, in third with a wretched offering of
27. There were however eleven other guys in our division who went off to
commit hari-kari.
Div. 1 (0-14)
1st Graham Johnson (8) 35pts
2nd Jim Cooper (14) 34pts
3rd Alan Thomas (4) 31pts
Div. 2 (15+)
1st Noel Larkin (19) 30pts
2nd Bill Allan (18) 29pts
3rd Andy Rich (21) 27pts
Tuesday, March 4, Green Valley - Stableford
On Tuesday it was back to Green Valley after a
two week absence. In Division 1 it turned into ‘count back central’ with
five players all amazingly finishing on 33 points. Neil Bramley thrust
his way to the top, with Stuart Mason and Dave Palmer scrambling for the
second and third places respectively.
By contrast in Division 2 there was no thrusting needed and for Billy
Allan it turned out to be a walk in the park. Stuart Mason and Derek
Thorogood sauntered in a long way behind to take second and third.
Div. 1 (0-15)
1st Neil Bramley (10) 33pts
2nd Stuart Mason (9) 33pts
3rd Dave Palmer (6) 33pts
Div. 2 (16+)
1st Billy Allan (18) 41pts
2nd Noel Larkin (19) 35pts
3rd Derek Thorogood (16) 32pts
Thursday, March 6, Bangpakong - Stableford
On Thursday it was a welcome return to
Bangpakong where the breeze blew and toughened up the course a little.
Nearly everybody had an enjoyable day except for the two minibus drivers
taking us to the course, who were both pulled over by the police and
fined 500 baht for stepping on the cracks in the pavement before being
sent on their way.
1st Neil Bramley (11) 38pts
2nd Billy Allan (15) 36pts
3rd Mike Rushant (13) 36pts
Friday, March 7, Eastern Star - Stableford
On Saturday the TRGG headed off to play
Eastern Star and once again the course got the better of most of the
competitors, but it did lead to another very tight finish. Mike Rushant
prevailed over Jim Cleaver but only after a count back, and Toshikatsu
Salto (apologies if I have that the wrong way round) was third.
1st Mike Rushant (13) 33pts
2nd Jim Cleaver (10) 33pts
3rd Toshikatsu Salto (25) 32pts
Good luck to all you golfers for the coming week and if you would like
to play a round of golf with the TRGG please phone Fergus Brennan on 086
056 7019 or pop into the Ned Kelly Bar in Soi Lengkee and add your name
to the weekly lists which are posted on the notice board.

Melai & Kaneta win back-to-back
PSC golf from the Bunker Boys @ The Ranch
Monday, March 3, Royal Lakeside –
Stableford
It’s always a pleasure to visit this challenging course and
to relax in its impressive clubhouse after the round, and today 20
golfers turned up at The Ranch.
![](pictures/s17-Bunker.jpg)
Mashi Kaneta celebrates a
return to form.
The golfers made the one hour trip down the 7
motorway and Chonburi bypass, arriving before our scheduled start time,
and we were able to tee off a few minutes early. The course was quiet
and in its usual excellent condition with immaculate fairways and greens
which were running true, if a little slower than usual.
Our leading four-ball enjoyed an uninterrupted round with no other
groups ahead of them, although the following groups felt that they
should have moved a bit quicker in such ideal conditions.
It’s rare for anyone to produce a great score on this testing course,
and today was no exception, with Colin Greig being to only golfer to
play to his handicap, winning the “A” flight in the process. Mark
Stanley insists he isn’t the biggest fan of this course, but he still
managed to take the runner’s up spot in the “A” flight on a count back
ahead of Geoff Parker.
Tom McDowell produced his best performance in his 10th game with the
Bunker Boys to take the honours in the “B’ flight, three points clear of
John Hughes, with new arrival Keith Hemmings fighting off jet-lag to
take third place.
The par three’s here are testing, so it was something of a surprise that
the four near pin prizes were split between two stars from the “B”
flight, namely John Hughes and Raleigh Gosney, with the usual “A” flight
suspects left empty handed.
A Flight
1st Colin Greig (7) 36pts
2nd Mark Stanley (7) 33pts
3rd Geoff Parker (15) 33pts
B Flight
1st Tom McDowell (21) 35pts
2nd John Hughes (18) 32pts
3rd Keith Hemmings (17) 31pts
Near Pins: John Hughes (2) and Raleigh Gosney (2).
Wednesday, March 5, Green Valley – Medal
We had twenty-four golfers today for our visit to the always
popular Green Valley course to play our first medal competition of the
month.
Since the management here introduced a high season policy of accepting
bookings with six minute intervals for tee times, there’s always a delay
in setting off, and today was no exception, as the first group got away
around over 15 minutes later than our scheduled time. Fortunately the
pace of play was good once we got past the first couple of holes, and
all the groups were back in the clubhouse in good time.
The course was in excellent condition and the weather almost perfect, so
it was no surprise that the scoring was generally good, particularly in
the A Flight.
Mashi Kaneta is re-finding his form after a relatively bleak spell, and
romped home to win the A Flight by two clear shots ahead of Dave Ashman
and Peter Kelly who had to be separated by a count back. This was
Mashi’s first win in his 15th appearance of the year with the Bunker
Boys, but nowadays he spreads his games over many golf societies in
Pattaya, and none will be surprised to see him returning to good form.
Gordon Melia’s long standing position in the B Flight may not last much
longer as his handicap continues to drop after a string of steady
performances (if he could putt he’d be in single figures already), but
with the cut set at 15 and under, he still managed to take first place
today in the higher handicap division.
Special mention is due to Arthur Rowley who took his first ever podium
position with the Bunker Boys finishing in second place, two points
ahead of Les Burns in the B Flight.
A Flight
1st Mashi Kaneta (15) net 69
2nd Dave Ashman (14) net 71
3rd Peter Kelly (12) net 71
B Flight
1st Gordon Melia (16) net 72
2nd Arthur Rowley (31) net 74
3rd Les Burns (32) net 76
Near Pins: John Graham, Mashi Kaneta, Peter Kelly and Rab
McDonald
Friday, March 7, Khaow Keow A & B – Stapleford
We arrived at Khaow Keow to find the course surprisingly
quiet and our first group were able to tee off a few minutes ahead of
schedule with an empty course ahead of them. The course was in great
condition and once again the weather was glorious, if a little humid.
The leading group (led by “Galloping Graham”) never encountered any
other groups ahead of them and returned to the clubhouse in a little
under three and a half hours, with the following groups well strung out
behind them.
Mashi Kaneta continued his excellent form from Wednesday, and once again
comfortably won the A Flight three points clear of the ever consistent
Colin Greig in second place.
Gordon Melia won the honours in the B Flight also for the second game in
succession, followed by a three-way tie on 32 points, with Tore Eliassen
taking second place ahead of John Hughes, and Les Burns being he unlucky
player to miss out on the prizes.
A Flight
1st Mashi Kaneta (14) 40pts
2nd Colin Greig (7) 37pts
3rd Geoff Parker (15) 33pts
B Flight
1st Gordon Melia (16) 33pts
2nd Tore Eliassen (18) 32pts
3rd John Hughes (18) 32pts
Near Pins: John Graham, Geoff Parker, Roger Touhey and Tony
Robbins
Note: The Bunker Boys are a PSC affiliated golf society who play
out of The Ranch bar on Pattaya 3rd Road (in front of the fire station,
and almost opposite the Buffalo Bar). We play on Mondays, Wednesdays,
and Fridays, so if you enjoy a fun day out, and a friendly but
competitive golf competition why not come and join us. We meet at The
Ranch at 9 a.m. for breakfast and transportation, and new players are
always welcome.

Moriarty sparkles at Emerald
The Pattaya Golf Society (IPGC) at Rabbi’s Elephant Bar
After being spoilt with a number of
fine courses recently, the Pattaya Golf Society lowered its aspirations
slightly with a visit to Emerald on Wednesday, 5th March, to play a
stableford competition on the friendly Ban Chang course. The course
condition could best be described as “Emeraldish” with the crabgrass
still evident on the fairways and greens which were reasonable.
The field was divided into two flights at sixteen and under and in the
second flight the two Larrys, Slattery and Ang, shared third place with
31 points. In second was Dave Lehane, finding some form at last and the
flight was won by Dave Plaiter with a level par 36 points which included
the day’s only birdie ‘2’, on the fifteenth.
The top flight had Greg Gawron and Andrew Purdie sharing second place
with 35 points whilst Dave Moriarty shot the best round of the day,
finishing with 37 points for the win.
Rabbi’s consolation beer went to Jorn Eriksen on his return and the
Booby Bevy went to Steve Jones for his substandard round of eighteen
points. Despite the usual frustrations at Emerald the group had enjoyed
a good day.
Wichai has all the answers
A fine, warm day on Friday, 7th March saw the
Pattaya Golf Society travel to Crystal Bay to play a stableford
competition in two flights with the cut at seventeen and under. The
general course condition was quite good but the greens on the A and B
nines were uneven and patchy and more than a few golfers left shots on
the course.
In the second flight, Alan Walker managed 32 points for steady third
place whilst Masashi Iizumi went one better to record a second place
with 33. The flight winner was Brian Shaw who shook off a lack of sleep
to post 36 points.
The top flight saw better scores with David Thomas and Robbie Taylor
sharing third place with 33 points. Local member Takeshi Hakozaki
recorded 37 points for second place and Wichai Tananusorn recorded his
first forty point total of the year to take a deserved win with the best
gross of the day, 75 shots.
Steve Jones shared the ‘2’s prize with Masashi Iizumi, with birdies
coming on the picturesque B6 and Jorn Eriksen savoured Rabbi’s
consolation free beer for the second consecutive round. Finally, John
Tallett accepted the Booby Bevy as a farewell gesture knowing he would
be returning again in a couple of months time.

Cuddy exits on a winning note
IPGC golf from The Tara Court
![](pictures/s20-1076.jpg)
Joe Cuddy and Don Byrne
Sunday. March 2, St. Andrews -
Stableford
We were in St Andrews today where because of the large numbers playing
Green Valley they kindly moved us over to at Green Valley price. It is
always a pleasure to play here where the fairways are like carpet and
the greens fast.
A bit hotter today as the temperature is starting to rise again. The
course was quiet and we got a free run and got round in just over four
hours, which added very much to the enjoyment.
We had a few good scores today; Joe Cuddy, playing his last game with us
for this year, had an excellent forty points and was a clear winner.
Over the past few weeks a lot of our players seem to be winning on their
last few games. Maybe they should stay on a bit more as the longer they
stay they seem to get used to playing the courses here and come good
just before they go home!
Charlie Lapsley, who has just arrived, came second with thirty seven
points and Sean Hallahan, who was also playing his last game, was third
with thirty six. Joe McArdle came in fourth with thirty four points
after beating John Marsh on a count back. Paul Anderson also had thirty
four but unfortunately was kept out of the prizes on the count back.
1st Joe Cuddy (23) 40pts
2nd Charlie Lapsley (8) 37pts
3rd Sean Hallahan (22) 36pts
4th Joe McArdle (13) 34pts
5th John Marsh (9) 34pts
2’s: Charlie Lapsley, Joe McArdle.
Tuesday, March 4, Pattaya Country Club –
Stableford
Today we made the short trip to Pattaya Country
Club and while the course was in reasonably good condition, it is
probably not good value for money in comparison to other courses in the
area which are cheaper and much better. However, the short journey out
and the fact that is user friendly makes it worth the odd visit.
We had two players with thirty eight points today, Don Byrne and Joe
McArdle, who played together and had a ding-dong battle with Don winning
out on the count back. Next we had two on thirty six, Pat Culloty and
George Cullen, with Pat winning that one on the count back also.
1st Don Byrne (16) 38pts
2nd Joe McArdle (13) 38pts
3rd Pat Culloty (20) 36pts
4th George Cullen (12) 36pts
2’s: Joe McArdle.
Thursday, March 6, Khao Kheow - Stableford
Back at Khao Kheow on Friday to what is probably
the best and most difficult course in the area. We played A and B which
are the best nines to play and the course was in excellent condition,
although the greens were not quite as fast as usual but still very good.
Jon Batty was back with us again after a bit of an absence and quickly
made his mark, being the only player to play to his handicap and winning
with thirty six points. Paul Murphy was second with thirty three and Joe
McArdle third with thirty two. Joe Peters got the fourth place with
thirty one.
1st Jon Batty (10) 36pts
2nd Paul Murphy (5) 33pts
3rd Joe McArdle (13) 32pts
4th Joe Peters (23) 31pts
2’s: Paul Murphy
Note: The Tara Court Golf Group play every Sunday, Tuesday and

Gary Warren bags it
IPGC golf from The Haven
Wednesday, March 5, Mt. Shadow - Stableford
CSS 75 (counting)
Division 1 (0-13)
1st Paul Buckland (12) 33pts
2nd Russell Exley (9) 30pts
3rd Keith Evans (8) 30pts
4th Peter Skinner (12) 29pts
Division 2 (14+)
1st Dave Howden (14) 34pts
2nd Walter O’Keefe (15) 29pts
3rd Ole Stamnes (28) 27pts
4th Ray Beavis (21) 26pts
![](pictures/s21-Haven76-1.jpg)
Gary Warren.
Lately the day’s challenge has been a very tough
course to beat with the competitions played by the IPGC groups last
month seeing the CSS rise from 72 by two strokes on one occasion and
three strokes on another two occasions, with one of those being
non-counting for upward review of handicaps.
This day’s event followed the pattern, with the CSS for the day going up
to 75 but counting as just 5% of the qualifying field achieved a score
of within two of handicap. This was with a field that contained eight
single figure handicappers, but even with this quality entry only six
players scored in the 80’s and all of those were at the high end of the
range. The course could not be faulted as it was found to be in great
shape with the greens playing a tad slower than the recent past.
In the second division Dave Howden returned the best card of the day at
two over handicap and kept the event counting as he led them in by five
clear points to deny Walter O’Keefe a win in his penultimate game before
returning home to the States.
Ole Stamnes returned to take third place another two shots back, with
new member Ray Beavis making an immediate mark, taking fourth.
![](pictures/s21-Haven76-2.jpg)
Peter Skinner and Paul Buckland.
The first division was won by another new member,
Paul Buckland, who showed no fear playing in a group that contained all
lower handicappers, with two of them placing second and third. Paul won
by three clear ahead of Russell Exley in second after the latter had won
a count back over Keith Evans with a better 16 to 14. That left Peter
Skinner in fourth another one behind them.
With the course and the greens being as difficult as they were it was
surprising that there were three 2’s in the first division achieved by
Dave Howden, Neville Duncan and Keith Evans and also one in the second
division by Terry Hodgkiss. But they were all denied their share of the
spoils, as Gary Warren knocked a hole in one on the 8th with a sweetly
hit shot that rolled in nicely after a couple of hops. A mighty fine
effort considering that on the day the hole measured 176 yards to the
stick.
This result ensured that when he returns next time to Thailand he will
have the benefit of a brand new IPGC Hole-in-One golf bag to show off to
his playing partners and remind him of the event.
Friday, March 7, Treasure Hill (yellow tees) -
Stableford
CSS 72
1st Peter Skinner (12) 40pts
2nd Mark Williams (8) 38pts
3rd Keith Evans (8) 34pts
4th John Sutcliffe (17) 33pts
5th Walter O’Keefe (15) 33pts
After the tribulations of the previous outing there were unsurprisingly
fewer contenders as the second individual event of the week was
scheduled for yet another very tough course at Treasure Hill Golf and
Country Club.
Again the course was in excellent condition, seemingly having had very
little play from large groups recently. But it was chalk and cheese in
comparison as regards the scoring with the quality golfers ensuring that
the CSS moved out only a stroke to match the par at 72.
Peter Skinner finally returned to form with a sparkling four under
return that was good by two to wrap up his first win out of The Haven
for some time and ensured that the rumpty dumpty would have to wait a
bit longer on this occasion as he stayed to the end to collect the
crowd’s plaudits.
Mark Williams also had a very good day at two under handicap to claim
second spot after he had started strongly to go two under on the front
nine but could not match the consistency of the winner.
Keith Evans was well in the hunt until he slipped up through the inward
half after he had shown much improvement from his earlier experiences
the last time out when hitting five into the water on the 15th at
Mountain Shadow, which had been describe as “like shooting skeet” but a
bit quicker.
John Sutcliffe made it a happy return to Thailand with his fourth place,
after he had won a count back over Walter O’Keefe, scoring a better 18
to 15.
One again there were three 2’s in the first division but today Geoff
Potter, Paul Buckland and Todd Pahl actually shared the pot whilst John
Sutcliffe had the lone one in the second division to sweep the pool.
Note: If you would like to play with The Haven group, you can contact
mobile 094 567 5726 or call in to The Haven Hotel, at 185 Soi 13,
between Beach Road and 2nd Road. All transportation to the course is
arranged and you do not need to sign up prior to the day, but you should
be there by 8.15 on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday on the days that you
wish to play. A schedule of courses to be played can be found on our web
site at www.thehaven-hotel.com

Wangjuntr Highlands - still polarizing opinions
PSC golf from Tropical Bert’s

behalf of the Royal British Legion Thailand, presents a certificate of
appreciation to the staff at Khao Kheow Country Club.

Tuesday, March 4, Khao Kheow –
Stableford
This course is always the first we play every
month, for two reasons; first it is a great test of golf and second, who
really needs a second. We are always looked after at K.K and as we go to
the course the attitude of the golfers is, ‘here we go for another great
day out’, and it is rare it is not a good day.
This day promised to be a warm one so the players all put their
sunscreen on in the changing room and went out to the start. The
challenge for the day was to be the B & C Nines, which in many respects
is the lesser of the 18 holes to my way of thinking. Still a game is a
game so off we went.
The B nine lead off straight into the wind, but you always know you have
the second and third holes with the wind behind. Except of course the
wind always seems to drop when it is behind you. We usually play the
yellow tees here, but just for a change we decided to play off the
whites. After playing the course every month for a long time, and being
beaten every time, the thought was that just for once we would like a
chance of a walk in the park.
The wind proved a leveler but it was a pleasure to just be able to go
around the course and not be beaten into the ground. The B Nine was in
fine condition and very enjoyable and all who know Khao Kheow can
sympathise with the odd lost ball in the water. The greens were a little
slow however the ball seemed to miss the holes frequently. Such is life.
![](pictures/s22-Berts-2.jpg)
Tuesday winners Mashi Kaneta
(right) and Dick Warberg (left) with one of Bert’s finest.
It was soon time to get onto the C
Nine, probably my least favourite of the three nines. C1 is always a
difficult par 5 as it is usually straight into the wind with water all
down the left side and OB down the right. But play it well and you can
have a great start to this nine holes. Unfortunately there is water on
the left of the pin and as is usual my ball found it. Back to the
drawing board! The round continued and the C Nine proved tough for many
people. I think that C8 as a par 3 is as difficult as any around, and so
it proved on this day.
So it was a windswept group that finally came down the last and went to
the changing room for a shower, however it was a pleasure to play a
round and not be struggling with the course all the way around.
I have been trying to make a presentation to the manager at Khao Kheow
for months as the course always helps me out on ‘Poppy Golf Day’. So I
wished to present them with a ‘Certificate of Appreciation’ from the
Royal British Legion Thailand, and on this day caught the assistant
manageress. I thanked them, especially Khun Surapol, the manager, not
only for their help to the Legion, but also to Tropical Bert’s golf
players.
![](pictures/s22-Berts-3.jpg)
Friday winners Mark West and
Silvano Pizzato pose with one of Bert’s helpers.
Soon back at Bert’s we got the results
under way. In the A Flight, 0 to 18, we had the perennial winner in
first place, yes Mashi Kaneta won with 39 points. In second was John
Hackett with 36 points on count back over Alan Sullivan in third.
The scores in the B Flight were a little better and that ‘Old Warhorse’
Dick Warberg won with a great 41 points. In second place was Paolo De
Grandis who shot his best score ever with 40 points, well done. We then
had a count back on 38 points that saw your scribe, Derek Brook, beat
Tom Cotton on handicap. I felt really sorry for Tom but skill must out
and also Tom loses too much sleep in his other sport to have the stamina
for a full round.

Friday, March 7, Wangjuntr – Stableford
I sometimes wonder if on a day such as this I
should not try to get someone else to do the report, as I have clear
views of this course that some of the others so clearly disagree with.
This was my first visit to this the Highlands course and one I had heard
so much about, so I thought I would go along. I have played the other
course here though and thought it very interesting.
It is a long drive to Wangtunjr but once you get past Greenwood it is
all downhill and the trick is to go with either a kind player with a
car, or jump on the bus. On arrival you drop your clubs off and walk up
the steep steps to the clubhouse. It is a fair climb but if you wait
they will run you up there on a sort of small flatbed with seats on.
However, just having arrived and looking forward to the day, most skip
up the stairs like Spring lambs, till near the top.
The changing room is small but comfortable, but then you can walk down
the steps to the caddies. Here the fun starts as they load you on to the
back of a truck and take you for a drive through the countryside for ten
minutes or so until you disembark at a rest stop. With us, that is when
the caddies went off with the truck to find some carts. This is a fine
time to top up on water and other such goodies.
When the carts arrived, we all loaded up and started the long drive,
maybe 5 to 10 minutes, uphill to the first tee. We stopped at a drink
station and I was surprised to see a set of steps up the side. I then
was told we teed off on this hole from the roof of the rest stop. Not
bad actually and it gave a great view down to a green that seemed a long
way away.
So there we were, and all we had to do to get on to the roof was drive
for miles, take a pickup up a hill, take a truck to a café in the wilds,
go for a drive in a cart and climb onto a roof. And that was the easy
bit!
The drive, with a golf club, from the roof was very interesting as we
then went down the hill in the cart and I lost Darren as he got out of
his cart and went for a walk across the fairway as his ball was on the
left and this was when I discovered that carts were not allowed on the
course. However, so far so good, and I was enjoying the fresh air and
the scenery.
Have you ever taken a cart and not been allowed off the cart path? You
tend to walk as far as you would if you had not taken a cart, and this I
think is the point where those who enjoyed the course and those who did
not parted. I have been on rollercoasters that were more level.
Wangtuntr Highlands is amongst the most picturesque courses I have seen,
that is indisputable. It is also the one with the biggest climbs and
drops I have ever played. So here we have the difference between those
who thought the course was really fine and those who thought it a bit
too much and gimmicky. And maybe it all has to do with age or ability.
Some of the holes are so above or below your feet it defies logic, and
ones like the ‘Stairway to Heaven’ entails you to look at a green way
above you with flat levels every hundred yards or so. Now hit on one of
these flats and you have to go from the cart to the ball and climb to
the green following the ball while your caddy dashes back and forth from
the cart. However, once we got to the top of the hill we were usually
met with large greens in fine condition that had wicked hollows on them.
Indeed one green has a pond in the middle with yellow stakes.
After 13 holes I was absolutely physically beaten and they should have a
health warning advising the ‘not as young as they were’ players to take
insurance out before tackling the course. I scored one point in the last
5 holes, so a bit tough to say the least, with shoulder and back not
working and my legs aching. Oh to be young again!
Round over and back at Bert’s we could get on with the presentation, and
the scores were not very good.
In the A Flight, (0-20), the winner was Mark West with 35 points ahead
of Mike Allidi in second with 32 points on count back over Richard
Kubicki in third.
In the B Flight the winner was Silvano Pizzato with 34 points ahead of
Jim Ferris in second with 32 and Don Cameron in third with 29.
Near Pins: Eddie Glinsek, Paul Alford, Tom Herrington, Richard Kubicki
Long Putts: Mike O’Brien, Mike Allidi

Walkley shoots 42 for Green Valley win
PSC golf from The Billabong Golf Bar
![](pictures/s24golf.jpg)
Friday’s top three (L-R): Jack Piercefield, Bob
Philp and Chris Fletcher.
Monday, March 3, Silky Oak -
Stableford
A deserted Silky Oak today and the course was in great condition, with
fast greens and no way you could get a bad lie on the fairways. We have
to thank John Player for looking after the lads today and he did a
sterling job.
We welcomed Chris Dodd back to the bar today minus his good mate Steve
Croy who is unfortunately laid up waiting for an operation for a
detached retina and broken nose due to shanked golf ball from one of his
friends. If you could see how he looks you will never get in front of a
golfer again, it is a terrible lesson to learn this way. We wish you a
speedy recovery mate and look forward to seeing you soon.
The scores were quite good with a three-way count back on 36 points at
the top that saw Owen Walkley, playing his best golf for a long time,
coming in third, Chris Dodd taking second and Jack Piercefield taking
the day’s honours in first.
There were four ‘2’s coming from Mal Farquharson, John Burns and Doug
Douglas (2).
Wednesday, March 5, Green Valley - Stableford
We had nine groups playing today at our usual
venue Green Valley, and we got off about 10 minutes early and were back
in the clubhouse in just on four hours.
The course was in great condition as always but the greens weren’t as
fast as normal, which meant for the scribe anyway that some putts were
left a little short much to the disgust of his playing partner, however
we didn’t lose the day as it turned out all square.
The scores were really good apart from our mate from Australia, John
Burns, who had a whopping 13 points. I think we will have to get a NAGA
prize for future competitions for scores like this one. No wonder him
and his mate Thommo got rolled by Cottee and John Player in the
challenge.
Amazingly enough in nine groups there were no ‘2’s and that must be a
first with that many players out there.
We had a count back for sixth place between Auke and Roger Ison, both on
35 points, with Roger getting the nod, fifth place went to Greig Ritchie
playing his best round of golf in a long time with 37 points, and again
it was a count back for third and fourth on 39 with Eng Duangwaw taking
fourth and her good friend Nichawan Khiaophuang (Sa) in third. Second
place today went to Chris Dodd with a great 41 points, but not quite
good enough to beat Owen Walkley who pipped him at the post with 42
points, his best round for a long time!
Friday, March 7, Khao Kheow - Stableford
Having not played at Khao Kheow for quite some
time it was a pleasant day out, even though there were a few late
starters who had a night on the town and one too many sherbets.
Chris Fletcher joined us today which turned out to be third time lucky
for him. Every time he has tried before work seemed to get in the way.
He did have some more luck on A7 with a great shot into the green which
initially he thought was a bit short. He had us looking in the rough to
the right of the green only for Martin Hayes to look in the hole and
there it was for an eagle, a two for five points! Playing the scribe for
a couple of ciders he jumped 5 points clear on that hole, but with a
nothing on the last the Capt got him back with a birdie on the 18th to
win by a couple of points overall.
Larry Gamble had the round of his life with a fantastic 13 points all
told I think he was glad to be on his way home the following day. Coming
third was the eagle man Chris Fletcher with 35 points, second was Jack
Piercefield with 36 and taking top spot was Capt Bob with 38 points and
two ciders.
Note: The Billabong Golf Bar is situated just off Siam Country Club Road
looking straight down Lake Mabprachan. Give Bob a call on 082 204 3411.

JTB Charity Classic raises cheers at Camillian Center
![](pictures/s25-JTB.jpg)
2014 JTB Charity Classic
winners –
John, Kenny, Mike and Brad.
The second John Deardon sponsored JTB Charity Classic
golf tournament was played on Thursday, March 6th at Green Valley Golf
Club. The format was a four-man Texas scramble and the numbers were up
from last year’s 52 players to 80 players this year as the contest seems
to be growing from strength to strength.
The course was in fine condition and everyone had a great day. John is
especially thankful to the Sugar Shack and Donavan’s golf society for
switching their golf days to this day and providing so many players.
This year’s winners were the Golf Club’s regulars John Emerson, Brad
Sproxton, Kenny Aiara and Mike Newbert with a very creditable net score
of 59.9.
After auctioning off some excellent golf clubs and a bottle of Cognac
donated by Jim Dundon, plus a cash donation of 12,600 Baht by Roger
Bishop, the total raised for the Camillian children was 127,000 Baht.
The volunteers from the center and John thanked everyone who took part
to make the competition a great success.

Breslin produces a gem

Monday, March 3, Green Valley (white tees) –
Stableford
1st Phil Williams (12) 38pts
2nd Andres Pedersen (8) 37pts
T3rd Dave Edwards (19) 36pts
T3rd Geoff Doody (22) 36pts
It’s that time of the year once again, so it’s best to start thinking
about where you want to go for the madness we call Songkran. I strongly
suggest to all our dear readers to avoid Pattaya like the plague from
the 15th-20th of April as the town descends into a watery mess and
roadside confrontations abound.
We are heading out to the cool mountains of Khao Yai on the morning of
Tuesday the 15th of April for 5 nights and 4 rounds of golf at some
spectacular golf courses. We are staying in the town of Pak Chong so
drop by The Golf Club or check our facebook page for more details.
On Monday we were off to Green Valley,
and Captain Phil had another full sheet of 40 golfers and 3 full vans
chugging up the old 36 to the best all-round golf course in Pattaya. The
course was in beautiful condition as usual, and we were once again
fortunate with the gods of weather on our side.
New blood was the order of the day and smiles all round as we welcomed
our mate Phil Williams to the top of the podium. Phil took the win with
38 points on the card for an outright victory over Andres Pedersen one
shot back. Third place saw a tie on 36 with Dave Edwards and a steady
Geoff Doody. Geoff took second place here the previous week and he is
really showing everyone how much he likes this course!
Wednesday, March 5, Crystal Bay (white tees) –
Stableford
1st Masao Ishikawa (16) 37pts
2nd Alan Rothwell (6) 35pts
3rd Gary Emmett (18) 35pts
Crystal Bay has seen better days. It looks like the lack of rain has
taken its toll on some courses more than others and old C.B. looks to
have drawn the short end of the stick here. Greens were bumpy and
inconsistent today and the fairways were rock hard, so obviously tough
to get your club under the ball and up in the air.
On days like this it is time to “think links” and bump and run the ball
up to the green for a better chance for the par. Masao Ishikawa had that
idea in mind as he was the only golfer to better his handicap and claim
first place in the process. Alan Rothwell was once again in the chase
but could only manage 35 points to share second spot with Aussie Gary
Emmett, who is visiting us once again.
Friday, March 7,
The Emerald (white tees) – Stableford
1st Tom Breslin (25) 43pts
2nd Alan Rothwell (6) 36pts
3rd Vic Hester (15) 35pts
Yep, that was no misprint, Tom Breslin had the round of the year and
walked off with a big 43 points circled at the top of his card. It was a
great day for the Irish and we gotta give Tom a big slap on the back as
shooting that kind of score here is amazing.
Yet again, that name of Alan Rothwell was lurking on the leaderboard,
but when a guy shoots 43 whatdya gonna do? Well played to Alan once
again, he has been very consistent lately.
The rigmeister Vic Hester was also in the hunt and a very respectable 35
points was good going here at the Emerald and gave him sole third place
on the podium.

Bramley blitz at Eastern Star
PSC golf from The Caddyshack
![](pictures/s28-1076.jpg)
Dave Bramley and Phil Cawse.
Monday 3rd March at Green Valley
enabled us to have 2 flights due to a good turnout of players. Leading
the way in ‘A’ flight was Paul Walia (15) with 38 points. Emmet White
(14) was runner up with 36 points and Dave Hester (10) took the final
third spot with 34.
The winner of ‘B’ flight was Terry Phur (20) with 37 points, beating
Tony Baker (23) on countback, while third place went to Gerry Hughes
(22) with 35 points.
On Wednesday March 5th the venue was Eastern Star and only 11 players
showed up to play this fine course. Considering the lack of rain in the
last 3 months the ground staff are doing an excellent job in keeping
this course in good condition.
The consistently erratic Dave Bramley (18) blew away the rest of the
field with an amazing 42 points on a difficult golf track. Phil Cawse
(16) must have thought the victory was his but his 39 points fell short
and only gave him second place. Phonsie McGahan (7) place third with 37
points.
Friday we were back home at Green Valley and the 39 points of Phil Cawse
(16) was good enough this time to take first place. Phonsi McGahan (7)
also had the same score as Wednesday but this time it was good enough
for second place. Paul Walia (15) beat Jack Butler (15) on count back
with 36 points to make up the podium.
Note: The Caddyshack is located on Soi 17 off 3rd Road or soi 8 off
Thepprasit Road. All golfers are welcome and reservations are taken at

Pohja posts magic 43 at Pattaya C.C.
Jomtien Golf with the IPGC
![](pictures/s29-1076.jpg)
Lindsay Phillips and Sid Ottaway.
Wednesday, March 5, Pattaya Country Club –
Stableford
The low season has almost kicked in here and the numbers are dwindling.
Last week we wished bon voyage to Pete Sumner and his lovely lady Porn,
and also to Mark Jennings, Magne Gunnarson and Horst Starchl.
We just about reached three divisions today with 33 players in
attendance.
At the presentation back at Siam Cats there was a long face from Jerry
McCarthy as he was awarded third place in division 2, losing on a 22/21
back-nine count back to Eiichai Matsumoto after both came in with 42
points each. The winner with an amazing 43 was Erkki Pohja.
Lindsay Phillips topped division 1 with a level par 36 points and Edward
Bourn was 2 back in second on 34, beating Terry Madsen on count back.
After a few weeks off, Roar Berger bounced back today to win division 3
with 36 points while Sid Ottaway beat Bryan Priestley count back for
second after they both came in with 35 points each.
Near pins went to Georges Faber, Grenville Hill, Horst Starchl, Mauri
Friman, Paul Hartley, Timo Kakkuri and Burnie Sinclair.
Only one ‘2’ recorded today and it came in division 2 where Sid Ottaway
birdied the 12th.
Friday, March 7, Eastern Star – Stableford
The course is still improving here every week, especially the
greens, but the grass around the lake on the 4th and 5th holes was
almost a foot high and this was reported to the management as we
returned to the clubhouse.
There were nine groups out in total and Tony Oakes recorded the best
score of the day, winning division 1 with a fine 38 points. Paul
Hartley, in his last game with us before returning to the UK, took
second place with 37, beating Chris Voller on a 21/20 back-nine count
back.
Iain Walsh topped division 2 standings with a level par 36, beating
second placed Howard Stanley by two points and there were ironic jeers
from the crowd as Rod Howett picked up the third place with just 30.
Near pins were claimed by Dennis Scougal, Harry Vincenzi, Chris Voller
(2), Jim Connelly, Frank Kelly, Walter Weber and Bob Young.
Tony Oakes, Bryan Rought and Dennis Scougall each scored birdies to
share the ‘2’s pot in division 1 while a rollover ensued in division to
the following Friday.

PAGS on a winner at Royal Lakeside
![](pictures/s30-PAGS-1.jpg)
A smiling Mark Sherwood
with Scott.
Combine clear skies and a light breeze, with a golf
course in great shape and what do you get? The 2nd PAGS tournament of
the year, at Royal Lakeside is clearly the answer. February’s PAGS
tournament was truly on a winner from the get go, the only thing needed
was some eager golfers to enjoy the day. Shane and his team had seen to
that, with some 98 golfers spread over the 4 divisions, including 9
ladies.
Last year there were some truly outstanding scores at this venue when
PAGS held their tournament here, but this year those great scores were
thinner on the ground, maybe the course was playing a little tougher.
![](pictures/s30-PAGS-2.jpg)
Paul McNally shows some winning
form.
One of the strengths of PAGS is that the numerous
sponsors offer technical prizes on every hole, as well as 1st, 2nd & 3rd
in each of the 3 men’s flights and 1st & 2nd available to the ladies
that teed it up on this day.
One of the stars of the day, making his first appearance at a PAGS
tournament, was Mark Sherwood, playing off 2 handicap, who knocked up
winning technical prizes, but admitted to a lapse in concentration,
letting his round slip a little over the last few holes. PAGS policy of
each player winning a maximum of 2 technical prizes means any excesses
go into the “lucky draws” which was the case on this day.
Paul McNally was arguably the shiniest star of the day, winning the Low
Gross with 76, then edging Gerd Riedler & Jeff Wylie for 3rd spot in the
A flight, plus picking up a couple of technicals. There were several
other multiple prize winners on the day, but generally it could be said
that the prizes were shared around amongst many well satisfied players.
Andre Olsson (7) was the A flight winner with a solid 38 points, ahead
of Lars Vesterlund (10) with 37, while the count back decided third
spot.
B flight held the best scores of the day, and it was a count back which
decided the winner after David Gibson (15) & Mashi Kaneta (15) both
signed for 41 points, David edging Mashi 20/19, while Werner (15) got
the bronze spot with 39 points.
The C flight required count backs also, with Randy Flello (18) getting
the nod 20/17 over (24) marker Jan Johansson, while Ronny Walfridson
(25) pipped John Andersson 19/17, after both signed for 37 points.
The Ladies flight was clear cut, with winner Supatra Dulkys (26) scoring
a fine 39 points, while the best of the rest with 32 points was Yuza
Phaohom (25).
PAGS continues to enjoy great support, with the free BBQ at Shenanigans
becoming a fine social event in its own right, family and friends all
come along to support the players. This month’s tournament will be held
at Crystal Bay on 26th March at a cost of 1600 Baht inclusive of green &
caddy fee, competition & BBQ at Shenanigans Jomtien. It will again be
popular, so early registration with Shane on 085 945 9689 is
recommended.

‘Paddy Power’ at Pattavia
PSC golf from Siam Country Resort
![](pictures/s31-SC.jpg)
Paddy Devereux and Bob
Edwards.
Tuesday, March 4, Pattana -
Stableford
First to Tuesday, when we travelled up Hwy 331 to play 1 of the prime
courses and facilities in the area, Pattana, with the A & B loops the
allotted test. The course was in good condition, with fairways well
grassed, while the greens were running smooth and true.
From the white tees, the A & B combination is probably the longest test
we face at about 6800 yards for a par of 73. Bob Edwards (9) came to
grips with the course best, scoring a solid 33 points, 20 of which came
on the B course. Next best was Paddy Devereux (22) with 32, edging Jeff
Wylie (8) on count back 16/15.
Near pins went to Sam, Neil, Bob & Willem.
Thursday, March 6, Pattavia Century -
Stableford
Thursday saw us continue our trip up the 331 a
little further to Pattavia Century, where from the white tees we had a
6600+ yard challenge. The weather was looking after us, with clear skies
and a bit of a breeze, which was needed as the weather is starting to
get a bit hotter.
It was Paddy Devereux (22) who stepped up to take the 1st prize with a
fine 34 points, featuring a nice 2 for 4 on the par 3, 13th. In second
spot was Graham Johnson (9) with 32 points, while Willem Lasonder,
playing from his new handicap of 18, was a further point behind.
Near pins went to Bob, Paddy & Graham.
Note: Siam Country Resort, Restaurant & Bar is located just off Siam
Country Club Rd. After going under the arch past the 7/11, turn right
after 50 metres, with the venue on the left another 200 metres along.
Golf from here is generally played on Tuesday & Thursday, with the
Resort hosting prompt presentations on both days.
As a PSC affiliated venue we welcome ALL golfers, including ladies &
seniors (>60s) who have opted for the “Silver” tee option. Call 089 094
1841 for scheduling or enquiries. Hope to see you there, cheers & good
golfing!

Brass Monkey stay on course for promotion
Bangkok Casuals Football League Div 1 & 2
Paul Frain
Pattaya’s Brass Monkey FC played middle of the table side Cosmos in a
home fixture last weekend with a hard game expected.
The home team started strongly but were guilty of missing some good
chances early in the game and it wasn’t until Tshuma conjured up a
pinpoint cross to Vorontzov for the latter to head home that Brass were
able to take the lead.
The Pattaya team nearly made it 2-0 shortly after as Matveev’s free
header flew wide of the Cosmos goal but then a great three man move
ended with Vorontzov scoring his second goal of the game as his shot
left the opposing keeper flat footed.
Brass keeper Yongui was called into action to make two smart saves just
before the break and Brass went in at halftime two goals to the good.
Cosmos came flying out of the blocks after the break and put the Brass
defense under a lot of pressure, with just some last ditch tackles
preventing the visitors from scoring. Brass slowly started to exert
their authority on the match once more and when Cosmos failed to clear a
free-kick, the ball fell to Ndjana who lobbed it all of 35 yards over
the Cosmos keeper and into the back of the net to make it 3-0. It was an
excellent goal and great thinking from Diptia.
The same player followed up soon after with a shot that slammed against
the Cosmos post and at the other end of the field Brass’s keeper Yongui
brought off two vital saves at the death to keep another clean sheet,
with Brass running out eventual 3-0 winners.
This was an excellent game with both sets of players giving their all in
the hot humid conditions. The win keeps Brass Monkey in line for
promotion as they have four games in hand on the leaders, but they must
win them all.

GIS enjoys spectacular sports day
![](pictures/s34-GIS-1.jpg)
GIS students race for the
line in the 100m sprint.
Abhigyan Khullar
Garden International School recently held its annual inter-house sports
day, an event which involved lots of throwing, running and cheering.
The day was divided into two parts featuring running events and field
sports. Things kicked off with the field events, which consisted of
javelin, shot putt, discus, long jump and triple jump. By the end these
competitions the leading team was Tiger House with 100 points.
After a short break came the foot races, which started off with a 1.5km
cross country mini marathon and was followed by a 100m sprint where the
athletes shot along the track like bullets from a gun. The 400m and 200m
races followed in swift succession and then it was time for the relays,
where everyone took part. Finally an 800m race brought the morning’s
sports events to a close and into a lunch break.
In the afternoon it was time for some fun events. Students hobbled
through the sack race, and then battled each other in the water race
where they had to carry water in perforated tubes to fill bottles at the
end of the course. After this came the last but most awaited event of
the day, the tug of war.
The overall winners of the sports day were Cobra House with 248 points,
followed by Tiger who were 5 points away, then Gecko, who were 7 points
back, and finally Eagle with 222 points.

Bangkok Patana School captures Thailand junior sailing title
![](pictures/s35-Junior1.jpg)
The top three teams representing Bangkok
Patana School, Bangkok Prep and Regents International School Pattaya
pose on the podium during the prize-giving ceremony.
Amid perfect sailing conditions in Jomtien bay, the
inaugural Thailand Junior Team Racing Championships were held at
Pattaya’s Royal Varuna Yacht Club (RVYC) on Saturday and Sunday, March
1-2.
Six teams competed in the RVYC sponsored RS Quba two-handed dinghy
series, representing leading international school teams from the Bangkok
Patana School, Harrow International School Bangkok, Regents
International School Pattaya, Lycée Français International de Bangkok
and Bangkok International Preparatory & Secondary School.
![](pictures/s35-Junior2.jpg)
The sailing was fiercely
competitive during the 2-day regatta.
The first day of racing on Saturday saw a ‘round
robin’ of elimination races with each team sailing three boats with two
crew members each, over a challenging course in perfect sailing
conditions. At the end of day one and after five hard fought races,
Bangkok Prep came out on top followed by Patana A, Regents and Lycée
Français, qualifying all four teams into the finals on Sunday.
Sunday’s sailing conditions were once again perfect as the four
finalists prepared for a competitive day’s racing. In the first
semi-final Bangkok Prep produced one of the shock results of the
competition, beating an enthusiastic Lycée Français 2-0 in a best of
three race series. In the second semi-final Patana A beat Regents in
what was considered to be the upset of the day as Regents were
considered one of the strong favourites going into the Championship.
The final was set amid tense moments pre-race as the Bangkok Prep and
Patana A teams measured the many and varied tactical opinions being
offered. By this time the parents’ and supporters’ enthusiasm had grown
to fever pitch beachside, adding to the general carnival if somewhat
partisan atmosphere.
After a hard fought battle in windy conditions, Bangkok Prep were
narrowly beaten by Patana A who won the Championship. Regents came in
third place with Lycée Français fourth, followed by Patana B who beat
Harrow in the play off for fifth and sixth.
RVYC Commodore David Littlejohn congratulated all the sailors for their
competitive spirit and thanked all schools, parents and members who
contributed to such a spectacular event. Presenting the awards the
Commodore added: “We’ve had a spectacular weekend of match racing and
it’s encouraging to see the professional level of youth sailing in
Thailand. I would also like to thank the international schools involved,
the commitment of the parents involved and our generous sponsors,
Bangkok Pattaya Hospital, The Pizza Company and Kingdom Property.
“Congratulations to Bangkok Patana School who have the honour of holding
and defending the Thailand Junior Team Racing Championships perpetual
trophy at the next regatta to be held towards the end of 2014,”
Commodore Littlejohn said in closing.

Women’s national team provides stern test for Pattaya Cricket Club
![](pictures/s36-Cricket1.jpg)
Andy Emery bowls
to Fon during the first innings.
Pattaya Cricket Club entertained the recently crowned
ACC Women’s Premier 2014 champions, the Thailand National Women’s team,
at the Thai Polo Ground on Saturday, March 8, in a league fixture that
was always going to be a hard assignment.
In the absence of the club captain Simon Philbrook due to injury, his
able deputy Salman managed to lose the toss and PCC were asked to bowl
first on a bright but very warm afternoon.
In the opening exchanges and against such stiff opposition Hamza’s
length proved uncomfortable for the diminutive openers Fon and Jean, and
Jean (9 runs), a reluctant hooker, soon succumbed as she was caught at
mid wicket by David Callick fending off a ball from under her chin.
Despite the early probing of Thomas and Hamza, the PCC bowlers failed to
penetrate any more of the top order. Fon, after the initial testing
examination, got her head down to hold up an end and was joined by the
Thailand captain Noy, who had shunned the use of a helmet. Soon the runs
began to flow as they both punished anything short. At drinks (13overs)
the score had reached 48/1 and the ladies were well positioned for a
second half onslaught.
![](pictures/s36-Cricket2.jpg)
John G’s belligerent 56
helped Pattaya to the target of 122.
After the break, the bowling lengths of both Booby
Young and Richard Harvey were much more to the liking of the ladies and
they duly capitalized with an array of stunning strokes all round the
wicket. Lord Harvey did finally slip one past Noy’s bat to end an
enjoyable innings of 39. But Fon (41no) continued with an immaculate
technique and, ably supported by Yui (14no), the ladies posted an
accomplished 121/2 from their 25 overs.
Needing to be firm in the opening overs it was decided Andy Emery should
be promoted to open the innings with John G. But sadly for Andy there
was no happy ending when after a rush of blood to the head he dragged a
wide ball onto his stumps for 6. John G, the diminutive Aussie feeling
like a giant surrounded by Thai women cricketers, was in an altogether
more dominant mood. Despite being let off early in his innings when he
was dropped at short extra cover, he hit an aggressive 56 before being
bowled by the wily spin of Aami.
![](pictures/s36-Cricket3.jpg)
Player of the match Noy
cracks another boundary during her fluent knock of 39.
Salman contributed another 23 runs before popping one
down the throat of an expectant Pizzy at mid wicket when attempting to
pull Aami and Dave C (18) missed a straight one tossed up by Noy. When
Thomas was run out for 6, it was eventually left to Dan Nicholson (3no)
and John ‘The Anchor’ Spiers (2no) to guide PCC limply over the line
with 2 overs in hand. The win sees PCC stay top of the league with three
fixtures remaining.
After the game Simon, the PCC chairman, congratulated the Thai National
Women on their recent success in the ACC Women’s Premier championship
and presented Noy with the player of the match award.
PCC would like to thank their sponsors the Pattaya Sports Club for all
their support and anyone wishing to get involved with the club is
encouraged to visit the website: www. pattayacricketclub or the club
Facebook page.
PCC’s next fixture is Saturday 15th March at the Thai Polo Ground from
noon versus a touring team from England.

Rising tennis star Thitirat
Kanaphuet wins in Bangkok
![](pictures/s37-Tennis.jpg)
Thitirat Kanaphuet
(right) receives the under-14 champion’s trophy at the Krasae Tennis
Camp Junior Challenge tournament in Bangkok.
Thirteen year-old Pattaya schoolgirl
Thitirat Kanaphuet has been playing tennis for three years now and is
continuing to make a name for herself in the Thai national rankings
LTAT. Now ranked at 20 in the under 14’s and 43 in the under 16’s, her
status will soon be elevated further following her recent win in Bangkok
in an under 14’s tournament and a runner-up award in the under 16’s
category.
Thitirat receives help from her support team of Tee and Gran who are
both leading Chonburi tennis coaches. She also keeps fit and stays in
shape with her personal fitness trainer Ruby. Thitirat still trains hard
three times every day, tennis before school and fitness after school at
the Universe Gym with Ruby and then more tennis in the evening.
She has just changed school to the Regents School who have indicated
they will also give their full support to Thitirat with their tennis
court and modern sports facilities. All this support helps the young
schoolgirl in the pursuit of her dream to become a professional tennis
player, and to maybe one day win the Pattaya Open and Wimbledon.
Thitirat’s tennis idol is still Roger Federer and other favorite players
include Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray. She also likes a lot of the
women tennis players, mostly Li Na and Serena Williams.
The young tennis champ will continue to travel all over Thailand to
various competitions and will also now start competing internationally
as she has reached the age of 13 and is therefore eligible as an ITF
junior member. She has also been chosen to be in the Chonburi team for
the Seagate games which are taking place this month.
Thitirat has also now got the benefit of a sponsor who is helping her
fulfill her dream and she would like to thank him for all his help and
support.
