Dolphins at the double

Pattaya United’s Thanaphol Huangprakone (right) challenges Krabi FC’s Dutch forward Jean Black for the ball during their Thai Division 1 fixture at the Krabi Stadium, Sunday, March 30. (Photo courtesy Pattaya United FC)

Pattaya United enjoyed a reversal of fortunes last week with 2 wins on the bounce to lift them off the foot of the Thai Division 1 standings.
A brace of first half goals by Brazilian forward Cristiano Lopes were enough to see off the challenge of TTM Customs FC at the Nongprue Stadium in Pattaya on Wednesday, March 26 to chalk up United’s first league victory since their Premier League win over Police United at the beginning of November last year.
United took their renewed confidence from this result into last Sunday’s on the road match against the ‘Andaman Eagles’ Krabi FC at the Krabi Stadium.
The home team had the better of the first half exchanges but they were unable to unduly trouble the resolute Pattaya defence and after the half-time break the Dolphins began to play with more freedom and were unlucky not to take the lead when club skipper Pratran Senala sent his header just inches wide off the Krabi goal in the 51st minute.
Krabi players felt aggrieved when the referee waved away their appeals for a penalty kick in the 66th minute after Diego appeared to impede Somkid in the area and things would go from bad to worse for the home team as Narakorn Khana gave Pattaya the lead just 5 minutes later.
Krabi pressed hard for an equalizer as the clock ticked towards full time but they were caught on the break deep into injury time and Cristiano Lopes pounced to score United’s second goal of the match and put the result beyond doubt.
Pattaya United have now climbed to fourteenth position in the Division 1 league table but they still trail the leaders Nakhon Ratachasima by 8 points.
Another local team, Sri Racha FC, are still looking for their first points of the season after suffering their sixth straight defeat last weekend at the hands of Ang Thong. They currently prop up the table having swapped places with Pattaya, who they play this coming Saturday in a local derby match at the Nongprue Stadium in Pattaya, kick-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.

PILC stages bowling family fun night

Allison Lutton and Dianne Hammond (left & centre) were part of the formidable Loch Ness Monsters team.

The Pattaya International Ladies Club (PILC) held its first special event for the year, the PILC Family Fun Bowling Night on the evening of Saturday, March 29.

Edson Uehara (left) is presented with the top scoring adult prize by PILC President Helle Rantsen.

As the name suggests, this year it had a family focus with many keen bowlers battling it out to try and win prizes whilst enjoying a scrumptious buffet dinner with their family and friends.
The bowling event was held at P.S. Bowl and was attended by over 70 people. This included PILC members, special guests the tourist police, and friends and family of members, with the youngest bowler being just 4 years of age!

Top scoring child bowler Zachary Phillips receives his award.

The feedback from the night was that it was ‘great fun’ and was extremely popular with both the children and adults alike. Several members commented on how nice it was to see children at the event this year.
To keep things interesting and entertaining there were competitions and prizes for the top scoring adult bowler (congratulations Edson), top scoring child bowler (congratulations Zachary), and best overall team score which was won by a formidable team called the Loch Ness Monsters, comprising of Dianne, Matt, Allison and Bill.
Prizes were also awarded for the best child and adult team names. Overall the night was a great success and was enjoyed by all.
A big thank you goes to the Special Events Team of Raegan and Nancy, and to Joyce and Sue for their help and contribution in organizing such a fun-filled evening.

Spike takes top prize at Coco Club bowls day

The lawn bowlers pose for a group photo at the Coco Club in East Pattaya.

The weekly Aussie day out to lawn bowls at Coco Club last week turned into an impromptu fun day with 14 players - including lady partners on a 3 x 6 end out of the hat round-robin to find a singles winner. With some “sponsorship” from Mont Clair, Kenya Airways and Coco Club, they all seemed to have some fun.
As it turned out, ‘Big’ Spike took the honours, from Bob and John. Bob also donated 1,000 baht for the best lady on the day - which we called the Boobie prize and which was won by a relative newcomer in the form of Wan.

Pattaya City say ‘Sayonara’ to Uchi with a 4-2 victory

Pattaya City FC line up for their match against Bangkok FC.

Pattaya City Football Club produced a fine performance last weekend to beat Bangkok FC in the Bangkok Casuals League on goalkeeper Uchi’s final game for the Pattaya club. Bangkok FC were hit with goals from the terrible twin combination of Tommy Rooney (1) and Paulo Rooney (3).
City got off to a flying start when Worsel Gummage lookalike Tommy scored his first ever goal for City with a beauty that hit the top corner of the net from 18 yards out. Things got even better for Pattaya when the more handsome sibling, Paulo, ran through and slotted home thanks to a great through ball from Shane.
Pattaya were now dominant and Paulo cemented their superiority with an outstanding left foot strike from 25 yards to make it 3-0 after 30 mins. It looked like game over until Pattaya started to wobble in the last 10 mins of the 1st half and conceded a goal deep into stoppage time.
Following the break, Pattaya again took control but suffered a moment of madness when Chinese goalkeeper Uchi nearly committed Hari Kari and chopped down Bangkok’s main striker. All the Bangkok players and supporters were baying for blood and were unhappy when just a yellow card was shown. Then, with 10 mins left, Bangkok scored again to play on the nerves of Pattaya’s follically-challenged manager Terry Wilcox.
They needn’t have worried on the bench though, as Paulo completed his hat trick after following up a thunderbolt from Chris just 2 minutes from time to confirm the win for Pattaya. It was a marvelous team performance and moved City into mid table.
Pattaya City would like to thank Uchi for all his wonderful support of the club and wish him well on his move to Singapore.

PSC bids farewell to club stalwart Alan Pearce

Alan Pearce
(1943–2014)

Nigel Cannon
The Pattaya Sports Club is sad to report the passing away of Alan Pearce, who died on Tuesday March 18 following a heart attack.
Alan came to Pattaya to live in 1999 and immediately joined Pattaya Sports Club and participated in golf competitions where he had considerable success playing with the Kronborg and Three Sisters golf groups, as well as the monthly competitions. He was known as the ‘Bionic Man’ with his 2 titanium knees.
Alan became a great asset to PSC where he served as Treasurer for 3 years and at the same time sat on the Golf Committee where he assisted the Golf Chairman and purchased all the prizes for the major competitions as well as doing MC duties. He was also instrumental in organizing the merchandising operation with shirts, caps and towels, all with the PSC logo. One of his many ‘claims to fame’ was that he played more the 100 consecutive PSC monthly tournaments.
Prior to his retirement Alan was a Royal Marine and then worked for Thomas Cook, however it was in sport that he was to excel and have many achievements – he represented England in the Decathlon, only missing out on Olympic selection through injury. At one time he held a unique record (maybe he still does) as he played 7 different sports at county level.
For many years Alan could be found most evenings sitting on his regular stool at the Roo Bar in Walking Street watching the world go by and talking to his many friends. As time went on, he restricted his golf to playing with his friends in the Monday Club at Pattaya Country Club where he also organised golf trips away – hotels – courses and competitions.
President Tony Oakes remembers being with Alan marking out a course and putting out sponsor signs in the dark using car head lights to be ready for the Charity Classic. He was a stalwart of PSC and most reliable.
We had not seen much of him for some time but we know if he could not participate in sport then he would be watching it on TV. Alan had certain views on many topics which he was always willing to share.
To sum up – when I called a friend to tell him of Alan’s demise he said, “He was a nice man” - and so say all of us! RIP.
Alan’s funeral took place on Saturday, March 29 at Wat Khao Photong on Siam Country Club Road and was attended by his sister Maggie and many friends.

McDao teams strike at Rotary Plutaluang charity bowling tourney

The Rotary Club of Plutaluang raised more than 60,000 baht to build a new public library at a charity bowling tournament held in Pattaya last weekend.
Chief Petty Officer 1st Class Visanu Tosombut, head of Plutaluang Sub-district, opened the March 29 match at the P.S. Bowl center above Tops supermarket in central Pattaya. 21 three-person teams made of Rotarians, Lions Club members, Sattahip business owners and the Plutaluang Wittaya Club all took part.

Rotary Club of Plutaluang President Bharni Hokka Left) chairperson of the charity bowling tournament presents the 1st runner-up team trophy to Commander Udon Phadung-ut.

A group under the umbrella of the “McDao” label bowled a plethora of strikes to sweep all but one category in the tournament. The McDao 1 team took the total-pins title with 2,114, earning the Pattaya Mayor Khun Ittipol Kunplome’s Cup, the McDao 2 team finished second and, keeping it in numerical order, the McDao 3 team took third and the McDao 4 team fourth. The team with the highest individual score was the McDao 4 team.
The only other team to win an award on the evening was the Rotary Club of Plutaluang with 699 points in the women’s category.
Winner’s cups were presented by Rotary District 3340 Gov. Suwan Sanphakorn, Deputy Gov. Chokchai Muanthamai, and Rotarian Ula Hericson. Six other awards were also presented, including the “booby prize” trophy and a morale and support prize, the President Kohtang Samunjaikhid Cup.

Rotary Club of Plutaluang Charter President Sumon Jaikid presents a trophy to Somchai Poksub.

The proceeds from the event will be used for developing a library for children and families, which is a project organized by the Club every year. Exact proceeds have not been tabulated yet, but 63,000 baht in registration fees were collected and additional donations were made at the event.

Chief Petty Officer 1st Class Visanu Tosombut (3rd left) and former MP for Chonburi Poramet Ngampiches (3rd right) were guests of honour at the charity event.

Rotary fundraisers for charity are all about fun and fellowship.

Breslin bags the medal

PSC golf from The Golf Club

Billy Eyles, Gary Billingham and birthday boy Gary Emmett.

Steve Ellison
Monday, March 24, Green Valley (white tees) – Stableford
1st Gary Billingham (24) 40pts
2nd Ron Robertson (27) 39pts
3rd Sean Hastings (10) 38pts
4th Alan Rothwell (7) 37pts
5th Paul Greenaway (12) 36pts
5th Bill Eyles (24) 36pts
Green Valley was the venue for today and the ‘old girl’ did not let us down. The course was in great shape and all 40 golfers were ready for a fine day of golf in the Kingdom.

Silky Oaks slayer Mark Wood.

Those hard drinkin’ Aussies are in town and keeping up with them is never an easy task but we had to try our best! To make matters even more difficult, it was Gary Emmett’s 60th birthday and that gave us no excuse at all for jumping on the sobriety train this week.
It was a nice cool day for golf and the overcast skies were a treat from the hot weather of late. All except the last 2 groups got through the round rain free, but a sudden downpour soaked the last 8. The leaderboard above tells the tale of the tape, and it was our mate Gary Billingham (who is over for Mr. Emmett’s birthday bash) who had a beautiful round of 40 points to take the top spot on the podium.
Wednesday, March 26, Silky Oaks (white tees) – Stableford
1st Mark Wood (8) 41pts
2nd Scott Witt (11) 34pts
3rd Oly Samonte (12) 29pts
This was the first time I had played this course so it was a day to look forward to. It was a very interesting layout and being right next to St. Andrews, the setting was magnificent. The fairways were generous enough and as we played off the white tees, the 5,973 yards seemed to go on forever. The course played more like 6,300, which is our average length. A few of the holes had pretty long carries over water so the choice of white tees was definitely the correct one, especially when you add in the wind factor as well!
We had some of the US Navy lads join us today and of course we are happy to show the sailors some terra firma in the guise of a beautiful golf course! They all had a great time and were perfect gentlemen golfers the whole day. Glad to have the U.S.S. Frank Cable in town!
Mark Wood was the man of the day and from the first hole birdie, it was in his hands the whole time. The Scotsman is certainly used to the wind and his approach shots were laser-like in their accuracy. It was great fun to watch Mark go from strength to strength and to see our old mate take the day with ease. Well played Mr. Wood!
Friday, March 28, Greenwood – Monthly Medal
1st Tom Breslin (24) net 73
2nd Ken Aihara (4) net 74
3rd Peter Larsson (13) net 75
Oh dear, time for the Monthly Medal already. Funny how time slips away, as the song goes, but 2014 is well underway. Greenwood was our venue for the comp today and 3 vans were ready to roll.
You just never know how these things are going to turn out. Medal play is a whole other ball game and one bad hole can put you out of the action. We must thank TGC pal Jack Grindvold for helping us out today as Captain Phil is still AWOL in Australia for another week.
Fellow Swede Peter Larsson stayed the course and turned in a fine 75 for third spot on the podium while regular Kenny Aihara came so close today but just not quite enough and a shot back on 74 for second place.
The honours for this month’s medal goes to veteran golfer Tom Breslin who outsmarted the low handicappers and big hitters to win the coveted March Monthly Medal with a 73 net off his 24 handicap. That’s a great round Tom, well done mate!
Note: The Golf Club is located on Soi LK Metro. Just call 085 434 3377 or see our website www.golfclub pattaya.com and for more information mail us: [email protected] and see updates at www. facebook.com/golfclubpattaya... all handicaps welcome!

Birthday boy Bob celebrates victory in team scramble

PSC golf from The Billabong Golf Bar

Scramble winners: Bob Newell, Gary Ritchie, Kyle Roadley and Jim Bell.

Monday, March 24, Pattavia - Stableford
A big thank-you goes to John Player for looking after the lads today at Pattavia. With just a small group playing we got off to an early start and with lightening fast greens and a stiff wind it made it different to say the least. Just ask Cottee, he hit a beautiful shot into one green and when he got there it had been blown right off the green! It was very easy to three-putt also.
The new clubhouse facilities are superb, apart from having only a 1-metre long bench seat to service about 10 golfers, however it was a pleasure to have a shower and clean up in such good amenities after using the old ones for so many years.
The road in to the course has also been sorted now and this place is well worth the drive to get here.

Bob Newell (left) picked up second place in the DeVere monthly trophy.

We only paid first and second today due to the small field and taking second place was Rod Croswell with 32 points, but he was just a little way back from the winner John (the stand in Capt) Player with 38 points, a great score round this course.
There was only one ‘2’ today, coming from the ‘2’s specialist Wayne Cotterell. I’m told it very nearly went in for an ace!
Wednesday, March 26, Green Valley – Stableford
We were joined today by the golfers from Royal Fremantle to play for the inaugural DeVere trophy, and with 10 groups playing for glory it turned into a great day out.
There were some pre-round challenges issued, namely the one between Capt Bob and his partner Graham Fardig against Duncan McLean and John Eadie, but with the Capt and his mate going down by nine holes it was a massacre to say the least.
The DeVere trophy will be a monthly tournament with Brian Chapman, representing DeVere, giving out the prizes that include a shirt and hat plus a very nice trophy and some golf balls. At the end of twelve months there will be a play-off for golfer of the year between the twelve winners.
With 40 players the prizes went down to sixth place, which was filled by Paul Greenaway with 36 points. Fourth place went to Usa with 37 points, beating Bob Bower from Royal Fremantle on count back, and at the top of the tree we had three 39s that saw third place going to Duncan McLean, second to Bob Newell and in first place was Nichawan Khiaophuang, getting 24 points on the back nine.
There were only two ‘2’s today, coming from Pete Stonebridge and Barney Clarkson.
Friday, March 28, Plutaluang - Scramble
We had a double celebration today, not only our normal monthly scramble but also a birthday for our good mate Bob Newell who turned I can’t say how old, but it turned out to be a great day out for him and his team.
We also had two teams from the Irish Rovers playing with us today along with a team of guys from the Growling Swan and the Courtyard Cavaliers also joined in but with a reduced number as Dave Done couldn’t make it, which made them into a three-ball and they were not the dangerous team they normally are as they were also missing Helmut the putter.
The Cavaliers promise they will be back to full strength the next scramble match, which will be on May 2, as this course is closing for maintenance on April 25.
Playing the tougher of the course combinations (West and North), it was a hard slog for some of the players today. When you are hitting long irons or even woods for your second shot it makes for a hard day at the office.
With eleven teams and an early 9.15 start we were all away by 10.15 and after about four hours all in the showers. The course was in great condition and with just a gentle breeze to keep us cool it was a good day for golf.
We had a special prize today for the team coming in with the worst score. I think they played the last nine twice to get the score of 66.9 net. I won’t name the boys as that would not be nice but suffice to say there are coming back to better it next time.
Coming in third today with a score of 59.5 was the team of Ron Gale, Robert Cross, David Hausman and Kevin Wild. I know you are reading this over in Angola George, but that’s right, Kev was in the team! Second place went to Paul Hack, Paul Blackshaw, Barry Copestake and Charlie, and first place was taken by the birthday boy Bob Newell and his team of champions, Kyle Roadley, Gary Ritchie and Jim Bell.
Note: The Billabong is situated just off Siam Country Club Road looking straight down Lake Mabprachan. Give Bob a call on 082 204 3411 if you are looking for a game.

Poole sparkles at Eastern Star

Jomtien Golf with the IPGC

(L-R): Jerry McCarthy, Dennis Scougall and Tim Hake.

Monday, March 24, Royal Lakeside – Stableford
A few people think the journey here to play a round of golf is too far to travel but the majority we still had 5 groups of keen golfers here today for the 9.30 tee off time.
Mike Chatt returned the best score of the day, winning division 1 with 40 points, while in his last game with us Jerry McCarthy took second on 39. The Rioja boy Dennis Scougall the ex-telephone box entrepreneur finished third with 38.
Bryan Priestley was the winner in division 2 with 35 points ahead of Steven Cliff in second place on count back over John Walsh, both coming in with 34 points each.
Near pins went to Mike Chatt (3), Dennis Scougall, Bryan Priestley, Burnie Sinclair and John Walsh (2).
There were four birdie ‘2’s today in division 1 with the pot being split by Mike Chatt, Dennis Scougal, and Chris Voller, who had two. There were no ‘2’s in the second division so a rollover to Wednesday.
The numbers are starting to diminish drastically now, even more than last year’s figures and it was Bon Voyage today to Jerry McCarthy and Roar Berger.
Wednesday, March 26, Pattaya C.C. - Stableford
The course here at Pattaya Country Club is still improving slightly each month and this was reflected in the scores today, with Chris Voller playing off 8 and winning division 1 with 39 points. The Luxembourg boy Georges Faber took second with 38 points and in division 2, Burnie Sinclair was the winner with 37 points ahead of Tim Hake in second, one point behind.
Georges Faber birdied the 5th for the only ‘2’ in division 1 and there were none again in division 2 so a double rollover to Plutaluang next Monday.
Friday, March 28, Eastern Star - Stableford
There were a few more out today than Wednesday with eight groups teeing off 15 minutes ahead of schedule. On the drive down here towards Baan Chang the clouds looked very threatening and they hung around for the first four holes before they dispersed and a cool breeze kicked in coming off the coast.
Still playing off 20, Bob Poole topped division 2 today with 41 points. Tony Holehouse came in second with 35 and Jeff Van Uffelen took third after beating Darryl Blair, Ali Dukoney, Glyn Evans and Joe Kubon on a 20/19/18/18/15 back nine count back, all returning scores of 33 points.
In his last game with us before returning to the US, Harry Vincenzi was the winner in division 1 with 38 points, and in the frame again was Dennis Scougall who took second on 34. Mikael Andersson, back playing regular golf again, completed the podium in third with 33.
Near pins were claimed by Paul Butler, Alan Hansen, Chris Voller, Walter Weber, Ali Dukoney and Bob Poole (2).
Darryl Blair birdied the 13th and Bob Poole the 17th to share the four rollover ‘2’s pot in division 2 while in division 1 there is a rollover to next Friday.
The Hua Hin trip has now been finalized for departure on Saturday 17th May for the week.

Lovgreen in the groove at Pleasant Valley

PSC golf from Café Kronborg

Monday winners Jan Lovgreen and Graham Buckingham with Dave Richardson (center).

Monday, March 24, Pleasant Valley - Stableford
A Flight (0-19)
1st Jan Lovgreen (18) 42pts
2nd Mark West (13) 39pts
3rd Arne Max Pedersen (16) 37pts
4th Brian Gabe (16) 34pts
B Flight (20+)
1st Graham Buckingham (22) 37pts
2nd Mike Winfield (22) 37pts
3rd Torben Sorensen (20) 35pts
4th Dave Richardson (25) 34pts
Near Pins: #8 Brian Gabe, #17 Dave Richardson
Long Putts: #9 Leif Kirkgaad, #18 Arne Max Pedersen
It was off for a round at Pleasant Valley and after a swift check-in we teed off from the tenth in overcast conditions but with a nice breeze.
The course was in good condition but was wet from the previous day’s heavy rain and it was not busy so we jetted around in just over 4 hours.
Back in the clubhouse it was more winding down of the high season with goodbyes said to Peter Hammond, Torben Sorensen and Henning Olsen.
Two flights today and Jan Lovgreen continued his fine form with a sizzling 42 points to take the A Flight ahead of Mark West in second. Arne Max Pedersen came third on 37 and Brian Gabe trailed in fourth with 34 points.
Graham Buckingham won the B Flight on a count back from Mike Winfield, both with 37-point returns. Torben Sorensen captured third spot 2 points further back and Dave Richardson completed the podium in fourth.
Thursday, March 27, Mt. Shadow - Stableford
A Flight (0-19)
1st Mashi Kaneta (12) 39pts
2nd Arne Max Pedersen (16) 34pts
3rd Elias Magnusson (19) 34pts
B Flight (20+)
1st Jack Robertson (26) 36pts
2nd Tom McDowell (21) 32pts
3rd Dave Richardson (25) 32pts
Near Pins: #15 Jan Lovgreen
Long Putts: #9 Dave Richardson, #18 Tate Akifumi
Mountain Shadow was the challenge on Thursday, up route 7 for 45 minutes and following a speedy check-in it was off the first tee 35 minutes early under clear skies and very hot conditions. The course was in ok condition but you get the impression of a ship without a rudder.

Mashi Kaneta (left) and Jack Robertson (right) with Dave Richardson.

We managed to hustle around in 3 hours and 50 minutes even though we all had a lot of putts. Back in the clubhouse a welcome went out to Burt Lee from Canada and goodbyes to just about everyone for about a month, with the golf starting up again 25 April at Pattavia.
Two flights again today, with the cut at handicap 19 and 4 pins.
Mashi Kaneta won the A Flight with a fine 39 points ahead of Arne Max Pedersen and Elias Magnusson, both with 34s. The resulting count back saw Arne in second and Elias having to settle for third.
Jack Robertson took out the B Flight with a even-par 36 points, while a count back on 32 points had Tom McDowell placing second and Dave Richardson third.

Smithson sublime at Green Valley

PSC golf Bunker Boys @ The Ranch

Peter Habgood (right) with good mate and popular golfer Reg Smart, who The Bunker Boys regret to inform sadly passed away on Monday following a recent bout of illness.

Monday, March 24, Bangpra - Stableford
Twenty-two contestants made up 2 flights for a trip to this ever-popular albeit stern test of one’s golfing abilities. Songkran must be fast approaching as the car park gave the first clue that the crowds we’d encountered on recent visits are thankfully, a dim and distant memory.
Another pleasant surprise was in store for us when checking in, when we were informed that the green fee price had been reduced by a few beers, dependant on your particular watering hole. The upbeat tone of the day continued when faced with an empty first tee and the always accommodating starter waved us on, half an hour before our appointed time.
The course had been on the receiving end of some very heavy rain the previous night and the grass was responding by showing it’s true colour. Unfortunately the bunkers didn’t respond so well and several needed pumping or bailing out and the damage will need some tlc. On the bright side, the soaking has definitely improved the condition of the fairways and greens. The latter were slower than on previous visits but very true even though the subtle slopes continue to bamboozle the majority of our brethren.
Only 3 golfers shot par or better with the rest of the field licking their wounds. Always consistent Gerry Cooney topped A flight on 37 points, with Mark Stanley a point in arrears. Peter Hapgood carded 36 to take B flight, which was not surprising as those of us that know him are wondering how he has managed to reach the dizzy heights of a 22 handicap.
A Flight
1st Gerry Cooney (13) 37pts
2nd Mark Stanley (8) 36pts
3rd Mashi Kaneta (12) 32pts
B Flight
1st Peter Hapgood (22) 36pts
2nd John Hughes (18) 32pts
3rd Dave Ashman (15) 29pts
Near Pins: Mashi Kaneta, Tore Eliasen, Jon Batty and Gerry Cooney
Wednesday, March 26, Green Valley – Medal
Our scheduled tee time was 50 minutes later than normal today, but in the event the first group got away as soon as they arrived on the tee, and the other 4 groups teed off interspersed with a couple of other outside groups, so that everyone was underway ahead of our scheduled time.
This was probably our final game on the current Green Valley layout since the score cards have already been printed for the new layout which will take effect on 1st April, reverting to having the hardest hole on the course as the starting hole - not a great idea for a medal competition!
The course was in its normal good condition and the weather was hot and humid, but the round progressed smoothly without any significant delays. Today was our second medal competition of the month, once again sponsored by KPK Foods, and was sure to be keenly contested with the race for the Golfer of the Month title also coming to a head.
It was a major surprise then that the normally consistent Colin Greig recorded a very rare NR after a disastrous first nine holes, leaving the field open for the other competitors. Keith Smithson and his good mate Mike Lloyd were playing their final game with us before returning to work in the U.K. (enjoy yourselves guys!) and it was Keith who stepped up to the plate with a level par round, which off his handicap of 2, gave him a net score of 70 - easily good enough to win the day three shots clear of the rest of the field.
Peter Habgood continued his recently re-discovered run of good form to take second place ahead of Raleigh Gosney, with the ever-reliable Mashi Kaneta taking the final podium position.
1st Keith Smithson (2) net 70
2nd Peter Hapgood (22) net 73
3rd Raleigh Gosney (18) net 76
4th Mashi Kaneta (12) net 76
Near Pins: Keith Smithson, Geoff Parker, Mashi Kaneta and Kenny Chung
Friday, March 28, Greenwood C & A – Stableford
Following the trip up the 331 and the extra 5km drive along the course driveway, we arrived at the clubhouse to find the car park almost empty. We were able to tee off at our leisure and quickly discovered that the condition of the course had improved dramatically since our previous visit six weeks ago. The fairways were lush and the greens receptive (more so on the C nine) which had certainly not been the case in February when the fairways were like concrete.
The weather was mostly overcast which kept the temperature down a few degrees, so conditions were perfect for someone to shine.
The scores were generally good with four players playing better than their handicap, but it was Geoff Parker took the opportunity to rediscover some form after a string of indifferent performances. Geoff came back to the clubhouse with 40 points, one shot clear of Raleigh Gosney who took the honours in the B Flight.
Mashi Kaneta took fourth place overall, and the seven points gained were sufficient to give him an unassailable lead in the race for the March Golfer of the Month title. Your scribe’s memory may be failing him, but I think this is Mashi’s first GoM title since September 2008, which seems hard to believe, but I’m sure Mashi will put me straight !
A Flight
1st Geoff Parker (15) 40pts
2nd Mashi Kaneta (12) 37pts
3rd Paul Smith (2) 33pts
B Flight
1st Raleigh Gosney (18) 39pts
2nd Peter Hapgood (22) 38pts
3rd PJ Redmond (29) 33pts
Near Pins: Gordon Melia, Geoff Cox, Paul Smith, and Raleigh Gosney
Note: The Bunker Boys is a PSC affiliated golf society that plays out of The Ranch bar on Pattaya 3rd Road (in front of the fire station, and almost opposite the Buffalo Bar). We play on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, meeting at The Ranch at 9 a.m. for breakfast and transportation, and new players are always welcome. A captain’s knock at Khao Kheow

The Pattaya Golf Society (IPGC) at the Elephant Bar

The Pattaya Golf Society visited Khao Kheow on Monday, 24th March to play a stableford competition on the B and A nines from the yellow tees, with the large field divided into two flights at seventeen and under.
The course was in fine condition with well grassed fairways and bunkers in good condition but with greens which were a lot slower than their advertised 9.5 stimp speed. However an empty course was indeed a bonus and the first groups completed their task within four hours.
In the second flight Masashi Iizumi continued his solid form with 31 points giving him third place, but a country mile behind the joint winners Rod Stevens and Larry Ang, both finishing with 38 points.
In the top flight John Chelo and PJ Mitchell shared third place with 36 points but the winner, after a long time out of the golf picture in Pattaya, was PGS club Captain David Thomas. His two under 38 points won the day and marked his first appearance at the top of the leaderboard for almost five years. It was indeed a captain’s “innings”, including as it did a birdie ‘2’ on B8 to share the pot with Peter Ditz and Murray Edwards.
Robbie Taylor generously drew the name of Mr Len for the consolation beer and the Booby Bevy went to Dave Edwards who for the first time in many a month managed to top thirty points. Hopefully he will feel inspired to emulate this more often. It had been another good day in the life of the Pattaya Golf Society.
Plaiter’s feast at Pleasant Valley
On Wednesday, 26th March the Pattaya Golf Society visited Pleasant Valley to play a stableford event in two flights with the cut coming at 17.6 and under and the second flight going off the white tees. This was to cover the quirks of the twelfth and fourteenth tee shots but in reality it was not needed as results were to show. The course was damp and soft and greens were slow.
In the top flight Larry Slattery and Takeshi Hakozaki shared third place with David Thomas on 33 points whilst Greg Gawron and John Chelo shared the flight honours with 34 points each.
In the second flight the advantaged of a short course showed, with Jack Robertson and John Mason sharing third place with 39 points and Masashi Iizumi posting 41 points for second. The flight winner was Dave Plaiter with the best PGS points score this year so far, a whopping 46 points. He also recorded a birdie ‘2’ on the fifth to share the bonus pot with Peter Ditz and Dave Moriarty, who fared similarly on the eighth and seventeenth holes respectively.
Dave Edwards gratefully accepted the bar’s consolation beer whilst Rod Stevens was awarded the Booby Bevy as compensation for going one under and getting no other reward, except a handicap cut. Pleasant Valley may be a little less pleasant next trip with everyone off the blue tees throughout!
Good test
at Pattaya CC
After an absence of more than year the Pattaya Golf Society visited Pattaya Country Club on Friday, 28th March to play its monthly medal round on the revamped course. Full of trepidation the group were very pleasantly surprised by what the course had become with a more challenging front nine with longer tee shots and contoured greens and a back nine which saw greens much better than when the group were there last time.
It’s good to see the management commit a strong budget to upgrading the course and clubhouse and maybe now the dreaded Phoenix will have a serious contender for Pattaya’s all year round golfers. It certainly is much better value for money and has a much friendlier attitude to its guests.
The single flight played from the white tees and scores were steady, with John Holmes and Khun Wichai sharing third place with net 73, Wichai’s gross of 79 being the best of the day. Sharing first place were Andrew Purdie and Larry Slattery on net 72 and it was especially welcome for Larry who was playing his final round this trip.
Paul Sturgeon celebrated his imminent departure with the only birdie ‘2’ of the day, a prodigious effort on the newly raised seventh.
Dave Edwards enjoyed the consolation beer as the lucky non winner and Masashi Iizumi took the Booby Bevy for his hero-to-zero performance which saw him go from 41 points on Wednesday to net 80 at Pattaya CC. It had been an enjoyable return and the group is planning to play regularly there in the next few months.

Henderson strikes for double success

PSC golf from The Caddyshack

Peter Henderson.

For the superstitious among us, number 38 is a must for the lottery this month since all 3 outings last week ended with this same winning score.
Monday, March 24 at Green Valley, the winner was Jack Butler (H/cap 15) with one of those 38-pointers. Filling the podium places were Don Hachey (17) with 35 points in second and third went to Ed Horrocks (22) on 33.
On Wednesday we made the trip through the pineapple fields to Pattavia Century. This course gets better every time we visit and now with the new club house open all facilities are top class.
Peter Henderson (19) limped over the line in first place with 38 points, beating Phonsie McGahan (6) on count back. Third place went to Phil Cawse (16) with 35, beating Paul Walia (14) on count back.
Friday we were back at Green Valley where again Peter Henderson took the top honors with another 38 point score. Second place went to Ted Gardner (8) with 36 points, beating his scramble partner Jack Butler on count back. April should be the start of low season and we are looking forward to better deals and sports day prices.
Note: The Caddyshack is located on Soi 17 off 3rd Road or soi 8 off Thepprasit Road. All golfers are welcome and reservations are taken at 081 865 3104.

Van Dyk vanquishes the field - twice

PSC golf from Tropical Bert’s

Derek Brook
Tuesday, March 25, Bangpakong – Stableford
We like to play this course once in a while, or sometimes twice in a while. Certainly if it was a little closer it would be played a little more often because it is very much liked by all the golfers as they usually play well here.

Dick Warberg (right) presents the MBMG Group Golfer of The Month award to Andre Van Dyk.

We arrived at the course with 20 or so minutes to spare, and a surprise since last time I was there, they had a vehicle to take us up the hill to reception. The changing rooms here are as good as anywhere, but it was soon time to go out the back and find the caddie and clubs.
For the old hands the start is now located where the tenth used to be, it is however a fairly gentle start. The good thing about this course is that it has good grass on the fairways, and the ball lies very well. The rough is not too penal and the chance of getting in real trouble is less than on most courses.
We played off the yellow tees today, still over 6,300 yards and plenty long enough for mere mortals. This course does have a reputation of players coming in with good scores and so it seemed would happen on this day, with the weather also playing its part. Still, it was very hot so maybe this would make the players struggle.
Round over it was into the changing room and really first class showers. If you decide to eat in the upstairs restaurant here be sure to check the menu closely or you may be left with a bigger bill than you expected. This is a ++ restaurant and some of the meals are at tourist prices.
Back at Bert’s it was soon time to get on with the results and this was particularly important as a few players were in the running for The MBMG Group Golfer of The Month award.
In the A Flight, 0 to 18, the winner with a great round was Andre Van Dyk with 44 points. Andre had 27 points on the back nine and I cannot remember anyone getting more than this in all the years I have run golf. In second was Mike Johns with 42 points ahead of Bob Britton in third with 39.
In the B Flight the winner was your scribe Derek Brook with 39 points and also a fine back nine of 24 points. In second was Jack Robertson with 38 points and for third we had a 4-way count back on 37 that saw Jim Ferris in third ahead of Dick Warberg, George King and Tom Cotton.
So to the MBMG Group Golfer of The Month and with his fine win on the day, Andre Van Dyk stormed home. Well done Andre!
Near Pins: Mashi Kaneta, Bob Britton, Mike Johns, James Ferris
Friday, March 28, Treasure Hill – Stableford
This is a course that is usually on our schedule for a Friday and it has undergone a rather large amount of improvement in the last few years. The road up there is not as good as it once was so the drive up there can be a bit bumpy, however we got there in good time and were soon onto the first tee.
The first and second holes here can be a difficult start, with the first being a par-5 with hazards on either side, while the second is a 200+ yard par three with a hazard on the left and a deep hollow on the right. A tough start indeed!
Not that it gets any easier as this can be a brutal golf course when the wind blows. Fortunately on this day the wind was a breeze and the cloud cover made it a great walk around. The greens were a little slow but the fairways were clean and reasonable to play off.
Back at Bert’s it was soon time for the results and to discover that the hot form of AVD was not over. The winner on the day was Andre Van Dyk once more with a fine 40 points. Back in the dust we then had a count back on 34 points that saw Walter Baechli take second, Tom Herrington in third and David Nicholson fourth. Then it was another count back on 33 points that saw Brian Parish in fifth and Steve Hamstad just losing out. T.T.F.N.
Near Pins: Tom Herrington (3), Doug Maiko.

Pratt pounces at Pattavia

PSC golf from Siam Country Resort

Tuesday, March 25, Mt. Shadow - Stableford
Tuesday was a trip to Mountain Shadow where we played from the blue tees at around 6,200 yards. With clear skies and a light breeze, the course was playing well with the fairways having some run, while the greens were true although not quite as treacherous as they can be at times.

Martin Hayes.

Willem Lasonder (H/cap 19) made it 2 wins in as many weeks, pipping Jeff Wylie (8) on count back 20/19 after both signed for a steady 36 points each.
Near pins went to Neil, Martin & Jeff with 2.
Thursday, March 27, Pattavia - Stableford
Pattavia was the venue for Thursday’s game, from the white tees at around 6,600 yards. The humidity was up but with a bit of cloud cover and a light breeze conditions were fine for golf in the tropics.
The course was in decent condition, although it is quite dry in areas, with the greens having a bit more grass on them, making them significantly slower than when at their best.
Jonathan Pratt (12), who has been battling the dreaded 2-way miss from the tee of late, hit some form with 38 points today to edge Martin Hayes (15) into second on 37.
Near pins went to Neil (2), and Jeff.
Note: Siam Country Resort Restaurant & Bar is located just off Siam Country Club Rd, after going under the arch past the 7/11, turn right after 50 metres, with the venue on the left another 200 metres along. Golf from here is generally played on Tuesday & Thursday, with the Resort hosting prompt presentations on both days. As a PSC affiliated venue we welcome ALL golfers, including ladies & seniors (>60s) who have opted for the “Silver” tee option. Call 089 094 1841 for scheduling or enquiries. Hope to see you there, cheers & good golfing!

Cunningham cans an ‘Ace’

PSC golf from The Outback Golf Bar

Bob Mattes (seated left) with ‘Ace-Man’ John Cunningham, Graeme Pround and Graeme Gibson.

Monday, March 24, Burapha - Stableford
Thirty-five players here at Burapha today, playing the unusual combination of the A & C courses from the white tees as the B & D nines are being prepared for the Singha sponsored, Pattaya Open which starts here on the 10th April.
Jim Brackett has finally had his handicap reduced to 7 but that did not stop him winning today as he picked up another 1st place in Div A with his 37pts. Course regulars Geoff Stimpson and John Cunningham were three shots back in second and third respectively.

Jarod & Geoff Brathwaite, winners of Wednesday’s scramble.

Div B went to one of our Aussie visitors, Graeme Gibson, with the day’s top score of 39 and he was three clear of Jimmy Little and Waldo, whilst Bob Mattes (36) made light work of Div C, winning by six from Tim Knight and Graeme Proud.
Finally we have another hole in one to report as John Cunningham cleaned out the ‘2’s pot, to the disappointment of eight others, with his second Ace in 9 weeks. John holed his tee shot on C5, so congrats to him and thanks for coming back and ringing the bell.
Div A (0-12)
1st Jim Brackett (7) 37pts
2nd Geoff Stimpson (9) 34pts
3rd John Cunningham (7) 34pts
Div B (13-20)
1st Graeme Gibson (16) 39pts
2nd Jimmy Little (18) 36pts
3rd Stephen Blazsanyik (19) 36pts
Div C (21+)
1st Bob Mattes (21) 36pts
2nd Tim Knight (22) 30pts

Wednesday, March 26, Pattaya C.C. - Scramble
Today was our belated St Patrick’s Day 2-person scramble, inspired by John White who had to return to Ireland last week for health reasons and we all wish you well John. Why belated? Many of us were down in Hua Hin on the 17th, the real St. Patrick’s Day.

Bob Lindborg, looking very dapper, with his lovely caddie.

We chose to hold the event at recently renovated Pattaya Country Club for two reasons; one, it wasn’t too far away, and two, it gave golfers a chance to have a look at what they have done to improve the course here.
The first thing that strikes one, is that the friendliness of the staff has not changed but the second thing that rears its head is that even though we had a special price for the day, the course is completely over-priced, which was the comment made by many of the participants. Speaking to the management afterwards, I learned that the low season prices have not been totally settled but around 500 baht green fee when purchasing a book of 10 vouchers seemed to be the likely deal. So good luck with that PCC.
The course itself really isn’t too bad; they have done some good things on the front nine, re-sculpted the greens which have a good growth of grass on them and appear to be coming on well. I can’t quite understand why they removed two perfectly good drink stops and replaced them with a new one on the Par three 5th hole, which has been built back to front, so no-one can see the green – unless you’re in the loo.
The back nine still needs to mature and the greens are not so good but there are still some good holes here and the 16th, 17th and 18th are three great finishing holes.
So overall about a six out of ten but may well improve when the rains come and we will have another look.
A special welcome back to Jarod & Geoff Braithwaite, today’s winners and also to their mate John Leonard, who didn’t feature today.
Back at the bar, the Outback put on corned beef, cabbage and mashed potato which was well received and Suzi & John Lawton kindly sponsored two near-pin prizes with the Outback providing the other two. They (the near-pins) were won by Dave Earthrowl (5th), Kerry Beck (7th), Bob Pearce (12th) and Dennis Persson (16th).
Team Results:
1st Jarod Braithwaite & Geoff Braithwaite (6) net 65
2nd Kerry Beck & Campbell Potts (6.5) net 65.5
3rd Sugar Ray Handford & Jack Moseley (9.5) net 67.5
4th Bob Pearce & John Healy (7.75) net 69.25
5th Andy Makara & Greg LeBlanc (12.25) net 69.75
Friday, March 28, Green Valley - Stableford
We had a full house of 48 players here at Green Valley and everybody arriving early enabling us to get away on time, so well done everybody and thanks – it certainly makes the starter’s job a lot easier.
The weather remained overcast and was a little oppressive until later in the day when a light breeze arrived but there was no rain; and the course was in good condition yet again.
Today was the last time the Outback will play Green Valley in its current format as on 1st April, the starting hole reverts to the present third hole.
Geoff Treloar found new strength since he moved to the silver tee, scoring a massive 41pts to win Div D but if he continues like that he will very quickly find a new handicap as well – but well done Geoff! Greg LeBlanc was six back in second, with Bruce McAdam and Jim Graham completing the podium.
Jim Brackett (37pts) picked up another win in Div A from Steve Mann, John Cunningham and Peter Nixon all on 34. Jarod Braithwaite followed up his win in the scramble at Pattaya CC with another here, taking Div B with 36pts from his good mate, John Leonard on 32. Stefan Hoge and Pete Stonebridge were probably both surprised to find themselves in the frame with 31 and 30pts respectively.
Waldo (Steve Blazsanyik) has been playing well of late and today was no exception as he won Div C with 36, from Howard Marson (35), Tom Sisul (34) and Greg Hill (33).
There were five ‘2’s from Geoff Braithwaite & Geoff Stimpson (4th), John Cunningham (12th) and Jim Brackett & Stephen Mann (16th).
Div A (0-13)
1st Jim Brackett (7) 37pts

Tewin takes it on count-back

Travellers Rest Golf Group

Roger Wilkinson and Tewin ‘Poopay’ Lamthong.

Andy Rich
With the fast approaching end to the high season, the number of golfers in Pattaya was showing a marked decrease last week and the days when two or even three flights/divisions were necessary have disappeared over the horizon for another year.
One thing that hasn’t changed, however, is the sun continues to shine and boy was it a hot week. But for a pleasant and sometimes strong breeze the temperatures would have almost reached unbearable. You can tell I am struggling for something to say when I start off with a detailed weather forecast for Pattaya.
So a quick look at the leaderboards revealed a good number of names of expats based in Pattaya who play at the TRGG all year round.
Monday, March 24, Pattavia - Stableford
For the first outing of the week on Monday it was off to Pattavia or Century Chonburi as it used to be known for our third visit in the last couple of months. Everybody seems to acknowledge the improvements to the course since ‘Mr Chang’ took it over but those same people without exception are left crying in their beers after encountering the wickedly difficult greens and the diabolical pin placements.
Wily old Roger Wilkinson showed that it is still possible to play to your handicap and was to be commended for finishing in first place. He was followed home, not literally of course, by Tewin ‘Poopay’ Lamthong who is showing some good form of late. Third place went to another regular, John Baxter.
1st Roger Wilkinson (14) 36pts
2nd Tewin Lamthong (13) 33pts
3rd John Baxter (15) 32pts
Tuesday, March 25, Green Valley - Stableford
On Tuesday it was off to Green Valley and the largest field of the week was again headed by a member of the indigenous population.
Tewin Lamthong went one better than the day before, but only just. She beat the giantly genial Irishman Louis Flanagan on count back and no doubt received a mouthful of old blarney from the man in green - or was it pink on the day? Louis is known for his outrageous, nee comical, golfing attire and seems completely oblivious to the ribald comments he receives from the other golfers.
Third place went to AJ (Arnold Jones) the larger than life American who has more tales to tell than Uncle Remus and is always good company around a golf course
1st Tewin Lamthong (13) 37pts
2nd Louis Flanagan (12) 37pts
3rd Arnold Jones (13) 36pts
Thursday, March 27, Greenwood - Stableford
The TRGG made the long trek over to Greenwood on Thursday and once again word came back from the troops about what wonderful condition it is in. It probably retains its place in most players’ top three favourite golf courses in the Pattaya region.
It turned out to be a day for the twelve handicappers and they took the top three places. Terry Power certainly enjoyed his visit shooting 40 pts and taking the ‘yellow jersey’. Fergus Brennan rose from his sick bed, wound up his creaking old body and somehow managed to knock up 38, which was good enough to take second place. The more youthful and colourfully dressed Louis Flanagan gaily advanced to third place.
1st Terry Power (12) 40pts
2nd Fergus Brennan (12) 38pts
3rd Louis Flanagan (12) 37pts
Saturday, March 29, Crystal Bay - Stableford
On Saturday it was a return to Crystal Bay to see whether things had improved around the course. Some new showers have been installed and the changing rooms no longer smell of old socks, which was on the plus side, but the greens were still not in the best of condition and the caddies have obviously never been trained to rake the bunkers because some looked like minefields, which was the downside.
Still most of the guys seemed happy, none more so than Graeme Morris who won after being the only golfer to shoot his handicap. He was followed home by Jimmy Graham who just pipped AJ (Arnold Jones) on count back in the race for second place.
1st Graeme Morris (9) 36pts
2nd Jimmy Graham (17) 35pts
3rd Arnold Jones (13) 35pts
Good luck to all you golfers for the coming week and if you would like to play a round of golf with the TRGG please phone Fergus Brennan on 0860567019 or pop into the Ned Kelly Bar in Soi Lengkee and add your name to the weekly lists which are posted on the notice board.

Gary Monley wins March monthly mug

PSC golf from The Growling Swan

Geri Crilly, Sal Brizzi, Gary Monley & Alain Taddei.

Peter Blackburn
Monday, March 24, Greenwood A & C – Stableford
There were 23 of us signed up for the game at Greenwood and we assembled at The Growling Swan in readiness for our departure.
We arrived at an almost deserted golf course and a fairly quick check in and preparation saw us ready for action. We had been allocated the C and A nines in that order and our first four-ball got away on C1 10 minutes earlier than our booked time of 10.00 am.
It was hot and humid with not much wind so we knew that the liquid intake was vital and we proceeded at a very good pace with no other golfers anywhere in sight - “millionaire’s golf!” The course was in great shape as usual and the greens were very firm and true and it was a very enjoyable round of golf which was completed in a couple of minutes over four hours.
Marco Beer was the winner in Division A with a fine 42 points and your writer, Peter “Blacky” Blackburn was second with 40 points. With 3 golfers on 39 points vying for third spot a count back was required which saw Bob Akapita (23 point back nine) prevailing from Ebrahim (20 point back nine) and Frankie “Hollywood” Sharratt (17 point back nine).
In B Division it was a return to form for Geri Crilly who was the winner with 41 points and Dick “Reverend” Braimbridge was second with 39 points, 2 points ahead of Ken Hole in third place.
Division A (0-18)
1st Marco Beer (17) 42pts
2nd Peter Blackburn (13) 40pts
3rd Bob Akapita (18) 39pts

The Growling Swan NAGA Award for the worst score on the day was won by Harry Kelly.
Thursday, March 27, The Emerald – Monthly Mug/Stroke
The Emerald seemed to be a very popular choice for the 22nd Growling Swan Monthly Mug as there were 36 starters eager to participate in this event and we gathered at the bar prior to departure.
It was very quiet when we arrived so there were no delays and we were able to tee off at our leisure and our first four-ball got away 15 minutes early at 9.45 am with the weather quite hot and very little wind.

Marco Beer, Harry Kelly & Geri Crilly.

The course was in quite good shape and the greens, although hard were well kept and true and very quick at times. We didn’t hold up the field as the group behind were not exactly “up our backsides” and we had quite a leisurely back nine and completed the round in the reasonably slow time of four hours and forty five minutes.
In addition to the Monthly Mug award we were able to have 3 divisions with A Division being for handicaps 0 to 14, B Division for handicaps of 15 to 23 and C Division for handicaps of 24 and over with 4 prizes in each division. There were also rewards for nearest the pins all the par threes and longest first putts on the 9th & 18th greens.
The golf course was the winner on the day as just 1 golfer was able to play to their handicap or better and that was Gary Monley who won his first Monthly Mug with a net 71. In Division A the winner was Sal Brizzi (net 35 back nine) with a net 73 on a count back from Mike Allidi (net 36 back nine) in second place and Ed Wyckoff (net 37 back nine) was third. Martin Todd finished fourth with a net 74.
Alain “Inspector Clouseau” Taddei won Division B with net 73 and Ebrahim came second with net 76, one better than Roy “Plums Dayton” in third place. With 2 golfers scoring net 78 a count back was required which saw Tom McMahon (net 35 back nine) take fourth spot from an unlucky Thientong Charoenrung (net 37 back nine).
In C Division Geri Crilly was victorious with net 74 and Rita Zoebelli was runner up with net 76. Third place went to Andrew “Turtle” Allen who had net 77 and Lyndsay Slender took fourth spot with a net 79.

Ed Wyckoff whips the field

PSC golf from Lewiinski’s Golf Society

Sunday winners: Ed Wyckoff and Jum Karagit.

Sunday, March 23, Green Valley - Stableford
A Flight
1st Ed Wyckoff (12) 40pts
2nd Peter LeNoury (12) 38pts
3rd Yui Bietry (15) 37pts
4th Terry Mangan (14) 37pts
B Flight
1st Jum Karagit (20) 39pts
2nd Ulrik Sinding (30) 39pts
3rd Peter Henshaw (19) 38pts
4th Eddie Henshaw (27) 38pts
Well if you are going to have a day you might as well have the whole enchilada, and that is certainly what Ed ‘our man in the White House’ Wyckoff did this Sunday as he stood atop the A Flight, nestled up a near pin and converted the putt for a 2.
Ed’s man of the match 40 points was one clear of the B Flight pair of the toast of the bar Jum Karagit and Ulrik Sindling, with Jum adjudged to have the best back-side in the resulting count back. Two Irish brothers fought it out for the minor places, both tied with 38 points, and when the black stuff was finished it was Peter who took the bronze.
Ed Wyckoff was followed in A Flight by Peter ‘the right honourable’ LeNoury as four players were log-jammed on 37 points. Chivalry prevailed as Yui Bietry emerged the victor followed by Irishman Terry ‘pork chop’ Mangan. ‘Big’ Jim Brackett and Freddy Starbeck were left out in the cold but Jim Did get a little compensation with a 2 which he shared with JP Maffray (2), Ed Wyckoff, Tom Byrne, William Peach and Gerry Roche.
Monday, March 24, Khao Kheow A & C - Stableford
1st Christy Knight (25) 45pts
2nd Colin Smith (12) 40pts
3rd Tom Gorey (16) 38pts
Khao Kheow has a magnetic charm for all golfers. Perhaps it is the challenge of the difficult “A” course, the ample inclusion of water, or even the splendid clubhouse facilities, but, for whatever reason, it drew a fair Monday crowd of Lewiinski’s regulars.

The Henshaw boys - Eddie and Peter.

A very hot and sticky day saw the lads excel, none more so than the good Captain Christy Knight. “What 45 points? You got to be kidding me” was about the nicest thing anybody said to Christy all day. Colin Smith must have thought he had a chance of victory with his splendid 40 points, and most days he would have but he just picked the wrong day. Ireland’s Tom Gorey closed the flight with a rock solid 38 points.
Kevin McEntee (2), Christy Knight, Colin Smith and Freddy Starbeck shared the 2’s pot.
Tuesday, March 25, Bangpra – Stableford
A Flight
1st Colin Smith (12) 38pts
2nd Russell Spratt (6) 35pts
3rd Nick Shaw (17) 35pts
B Flight
1st Manos Volikaisk (18) 40pts
2nd Charles Cunningham (18) 39pts
3rd Peter Henshaw (19) 36pts
Fine weather and the promise of good golf and fellowship brought out a large contingent to travel down to the demanding Bangpra. The man of the match was B Flight’s Manos Volikaisk who carded a cracking 40 points. Volikaisk was closely followed home by Charles Cunningham with a splendid 39 points. Peter ‘the silver surfer’ Henshaw made it two paydays in a row as he closed the flight on 35 points.
Pay-window specialist Colin Smith was the top player in the senior circuit with a solid 38 points. The battle for the minor flight places had Russell Spratt pipping the man riding a purple patch, Nick ‘Elvis’ Shaw, both three shots adrift. Compensation for Nick came via a share of the 2’s pot with Manos Volikaisk and Mike Jefferys.
Wednesday, March 26, Green Valley – Stableford
A Flight
1st Kevin Betts (16) 37pts
2nd Dominic Downey (12) 37pts
B Flight
1st Eddie Henshaw (27) 41pts
2nd Peter Henshaw (19) 40pts
Eddie Henshaw, who was fourth on Sunday, took no chances and no prisoners with his B Flight and man of the match 41 points. Eddie needed every trick in his well worn golf back to beat his brother Peter ‘the silver surfer’ by just one stroke.
A Fight was just as dramatic as a count back was required to separate Kevin Betts and Eric Gobert as both returned 37 points. Kevin’s inward nine was more favourable dispersed.
No 2’s were recorded so a rollover to Thursday.
Thursday, March 27, Crystal Bay B & A – Stableford
A Flight
1st Maurice Roberts (13) 38pts
2nd Kevin Betts (16) 35pts
B Flight
1st Pierre Bietry (18) 37pts
2nd Dave Nicolson (18) 37pts
Thursday marked a welcome return to Crystal Bay and the tough Thai Takenaka design, which was in pretty good shape considering the long period of drought.
Maurice Roberts dominated the senior flight with his man of the match 38 points. Kevin Betts picked up the flight silver with his steady 35 points for his second pay window visit on the bounce.
Pierre ‘the magician’ Bietry claimed the top spot in B Flight (just like that) by virtue of a better back nine over Dave Nicolson and Barry Oats. Dave lifted the silver as Barry was left high and dry.
All the top three performers in B Flight and Thierry Danzas shared the rollover 2’s pot
Friday, March 28, Silky Oak - Stableford
A Flight
1st Ian Pickles (13) 40pts
2nd Eric Gobert (4) 37pts
3rd Matt Cronin (13) 37pts
B Flight
1st William Peach (18) 39pts
2nd Mike Jeffreys (18) 38pts
3rd Allan White (18) 37pts
The week ended with a trip to Silky Oak and that was just fine for Canadian Ian Pickles who put together an A Flight top spot and man of the match 40 points; no mean feat in this heat and humidity. Eric Gobert and Matt Cronin were knotted on 37 points and when the knot was untied by count back it was Eric who had the better of it.
William Peach was holding the biggest bag of loot on the B Flight podium as his excellent 39 points was one clear of Mike ‘the Welsh wizard’ Jeffreys. Mike was also a shot clear of the tandem of Allan White and Peter ‘the silver surfer’ Henshaw, the mathematics on Allan’s card being more favourable than those of Peters.
Ian Pickles, Eric Gobert and Ed Wyckoff shared the 2’s pot.
As was expected Freddy Starbeck was the winner of the golfer of the month for March 2014.
