Pattaya, Saturday, April 5. (Photo courtesy Pattaya United FC)
Pattaya United continued their resurgent Division 1
league form last weekend with a convincing 3-0 victory over near neighbours
Sri Racha FC at the Nongprue Stadium in Pattaya.
Saturday’s game saw both teams play out a cagey first half before United
made the decisive breakthrough on the hour mark as Sarawut Feungdan
unleashed an unstoppable shot from the edge of the penalty area that flew
into the top corner of the visitors’ goal.
Spurred on by their vociferous fans, the Dolphins double their lead in the
73rd minute when Patawee caught the Sri Racha defence napping from a quick
throw-in and Sarawut was on hand to sweep in his cross from close range to
register his second goal of the match.
United’s victory was completed with a third goal in the 76th minute with
midfielder Patipat Armapantree firing home a low shot following a quick
counter attack by the Dolphins.
With their third straight win since Chatchai Phahonpat took over from Sombat
Pinyasiri as managing director of the club, United have now risen to
thirteenth position in the league standings on 9 points, eight behind league
leaders Korat. Pattaya’s next Division 1 league fixture is on April 19 away
at Bangkok FC. Kick off scheduled for 5 p.m.

Top sailors from around the world heading to 10th TOG Regatta

A strong fleet of international and domestic
boats will compete at the 10th anniversary Top of the Gulf Regatta, held
1st to 5th May at Ocean Marina Yacht Club, Jomtien Beach, Pattaya.
The Top of the Gulf Regatta celebrates its 10th anniversary this year with
top sailors from around the world heading to Pattaya, to compete in Asia’s
largest multi-class regatta from 1st to 5th May at Ocean Marina Yacht Club.
Regularly attracting in excess of 250 boats and more than 600 sailors from
over 30 countries, the Top of the Gulf Regatta is known around the world for
its competitive sailing across a diverse fleet of boats, and this year
organisers expect one of the most competitive fleets yet with boats and
crews from Singapore, Australia, Malaysia, Hong Kong, and from as far away
as England and USA all listed to take part.
“The 10th anniversary is shaping up to be one of the best yet. We have a
strong line-up of international boats and crew who will be racing a large
fleet of local talent across twelve classes,” said William Gasson, Chairman
of the Organising Committee.
An iconic event in Pattaya’s sporting calendar, Top of the Gulf Regatta has
become a ‘Festival of Sail’, bringing together a large fleet of keelboats
and multihulls, dinghies, beach catamarans, windsurfs, the prestigious
Coronation Cup and the Thailand Optimist National Championships.
With one of the Regatta’s aims to promote sailing in Thailand, organisers
have worked closely with the Yacht Racing Association of Thailand for ten
years supporting grassroots sailing in Thailand, and have given thousands of
Thai youth sailors the opportunity to develop competitive sailing skills at
an international-standard regatta. Thai youngsters have gone on to compete
in regional and world sailing championships in recent years, as well as the
Olympics.
Having introduced windsurfing to the Regatta a few years ago, organisers
have this year brought the RS:One Asian Championship to Thailand – the first
time this regional championship has been held in Thailand.
“We are proud to bring the RS:One Asian Championship to Thailand as part of
the Top of the Gulf Regatta. This is the first time the championship has
been held in Thailand and we are expecting over 30 national team sailors and
Olympic hopefuls from around Asia to compete,” commented Gasson.
The Top of the Gulf is the only regatta in Thailand to be operated from a
marina and Ocean Marina Yacht Club, South East Asia’s largest marina and
home of the regatta since the beginning, provides an ideal in-water and
onshore base for the event.
“Ocean Marina Yacht Club have been instrumental in the development of
sailing in the Gulf of Thailand and in the success and growth of the Top of
the Gulf Regatta over the past ten years,” said Mr. Gasson. “We look forward
to working together and promoting sailing in Thailand for many more years to
come.”

Goodbye and farewell Mr. Livingston
PSC golf from The Golf Club

Laem Chabang was Richard’s
favourite golf course in Pattaya.
Steve Ellison
We had a sad, but inevitable, telephone call last weekend that brought the
news of the passing of our great friend, Richard Livingston. Richard lived
and breathed golf all his life, as a European Tour pro in the 70’s he played
in 4 Open Championships (once with Gary Player) and probably gave more
lessons to Pattaya golfers than anyone else.
Richard
Livingston - R.I.P.
As we all know, Richard came from that fine generation of English Gentlemen
golfers that is a vanishing breed of humility and gentle charm. Thanks for
the memories, Mr. Livingston. We will raise our Sangsom & Coke to your
passing, Sir, and may you Rest in Peace.
Monday, March 31, Green Valley (white tees) – Stableford
1st Paul Greenaway (12) 42pts
2nd Brian Green (15) 36pts
3rd Bill Eyles (24) 35pts
3rd Mark Wood (8) 35pts
5thAndy Makara (26) 33pts
Good ole Green Valley is our only regular fixture and every Monday the
sign-up sheet is full of locals and tourists alike for this popular venue.
The new scorecard showed a revamped hole configuration that we hope will be
the last change for awhile! Most of the gang finished in the dry but the
last few groups got a bit of a dousing, but in this heat that’s not such a
bad thing!
Our 8 tee times ended up being 9 and so the game was afoot. There were the
usual suspects of course - some guys have been playing this game and this
course for so long they can go ‘round with their eyes closed!
Mark Wood has been in the frame on a very consistent basis on this trip out,
and today was no exception. Today he shared 3rd place with Wild Bill Eyles
as both turned in cards of 35. Tourist Brian Green (with his lovely Russian
wife Angia) was also good for the podium, as he was the previous week, and
36 points were good enough for sole second.
Beating the huddled masses by a whopping 6 strokes, it was Paul Greenaway
who added to his paycheck with a terrific round of 41 points to take the
win. Mr. “Take it Easy” did just that as he strolled off with all the
handsome man vouchers on this Monday afternoon, well played mate!
Wednesday, April 2, Laem Chabang (white tees) – Stableford
1st Alan Rothwell (7) 41pts
2nd Peter Larsson (14) 36pts
3rd Mark Wood (8) 35pts
It has been yonks since we last set foot here. Today we booked our 3:30 p.m.
tee time to try our hand at the Night Golf facility that Laem Chabang
offers. We played the A course first, and by the 12th hole, the massive
floodlights came on like another morning sunrise to light up the B track.
The verdict was generally a good one, but on certain shots the hard shadows
were a bit difficult to deal with. The great benefit of cooler weather was
certainly a bonus, and the 1,950 baht all in price was also a sweetener.
This is still a beautiful golf course in perfect condition. I think that
Laem Chabang has been overshadowed by the grander Siam complex of golf
courses, but don’t forget that for years L.C. was ranked in the top 10 Asian
courses by Golf Digest.
Today it was all Alan Rothwell, as our American friend had the best round of
his trip out so far as he shot to 41 Stableford points with 2 blobs on the
card! Peter Larsson and Mark Wood were 2nd and 3rd respectively with
respectable scores of 36 and 35 under the lights.
Friday, April 4, Khao Kheow (yellow tees) - Stableford
1st Masao Ishikawa (15) 35pts
2nd Jimmy Dundon (15) 34pts
3rd Stefan Berg (3) 31pts
This Pete Dye golf course is one of the best we have in Pattaya, and now is
probably the best value as well. The guys were raving about the course so it
will be on our playlist throughout the summer months. That said, it is one
of the more difficult golf courses in the area, and the scores reflected
that challenge.
The podium today was very international with Japan, America and Sweden all
represented and we like to have that diversity in our comps. Ishi is his
nickname and Masao Ishikawa was the man on top today as 35 points were
enough to beat out 18 golfers for first place.
New York’s Jimmy Dundon is playing good golf these days and today he was
just one shot behind to take second spot. Stefan Berg, playing off just a 3
handicap, stole the last podium slot with his 31 on the day.

Lightning Rod strikes twice
Travellers Rest Golf Group

Fergus Brennan and Rod Ewan.
Andy Rich
Golfers are deserting the sinking ship of Pattaya faster than you can shout
“Fore!” In fact on Monday of last week at Treasure Hill that is precisely
the number the winner had to beat, actually it was nearer three men and a
dog.
Whether this is down to everybody getting out of town before the mayhem and
madness starts, also known as Songkran, or whether the rise in temperatures
has meant everybody headed for the swimming pool or beach instead or maybe
they just don’t like Treasure Hill, who knows.
Monday, March 31, Treasure Hill - Stableford
Monday at Treasure Hill was the lowest turnout of the week and
the small numbers certainly helped Fergus Brennan who had home advantage in
seeing off the opposition. Dave Edwards took the runners up spot with Larry
Simpson in third place. The dog came in last!
1st Fergus Brennan (12) 34pts
2nd Dave Edwards (12) 32pts
3rd Larry Simpson (12) 29pts
Tuesday, April 1, Green Valley - Stableford
On Tuesday the numbers were back up to double figures for the
weekly visit to Green Valley and we found the GV management had decided to
play an April Fool’s joke on everybody by changing the course around again.
So now we all start on the toughest hole on the course, the Stroke Index 1
hole which used to be the third hole. After that you take a left turn
instead of a right to play Hole 2 which used to be Hole 6. Confused? We
certainly were.
Still, as it turned out it appeared to reduce the distance between the green
and the next tee which speeded up the time to complete the round, so perhaps
it will turn out to be a good thing.
Rod Ewan certainly approved of the changes by shooting 38pts which was way
too good for the rest of the field. Gerry Fernandez, or Ravi as he is now
known because of his shanking problems, shook off the dreaded affliction for
the day and strode in second. Dave Palmer, who used to train greyhounds,
showed he also still has a sprightly turn of speed to romp home in third
place after losing out on count back to Gerry.
1st Rod Ewan (14) 38pts
2nd Gerry Fernandez (13) 35pts
3rd Dave Palmer (7) 35pts
Thursday, April 3, The Emerald - Stableford
It was off to Emerald on Thursday for the largest turnout of the
week. Rod Ewan, despite being docked a shot after his round at Green Valley,
stuck two fingers up to the Handicap Committee and sprinted home in first
place with 41pts and was immediately docked a further two shots. He only
beat John Goudge on count back however, so didn’t get things all his own
way. Tewin Poopay Lamthong continued her good form of late by taking third
place.
1st Rod Ewan (13) 41pts
2nd John Goudge (8) 41pts
3rd Tewin Poopay Lamthong (12) 35pts
Saturday, April 5, Mt. Shadow - Stableford
Saturday’s outing to Mountain Shadow rounded off the TRGG’s golf
for the week. Brett Arnold paid us another visit and walked off with first
place while David Booth, another regular visitor, took second spot and
Scotsman Ian Bell was third.
1st Brett Arnold (12) 38pts
2nd David Booth (34) 34pts
3rd Ian Bell (7) 32pts
Good luck to all you golfers for the coming week and if you would like to
play a round of golf with the TRGG, please phone Fergus Brennan on 086 056
7019 or pop into the Ned Kelly Bar in Soi Lengkee and add your name to the
weekly lists which are posted on the notice board..

Gras takes a liking to the podium
IPGC golf from The Tara Court Golf

Vincent Gras
Sunday, March 30, Green Valley –
Stableford
1st Vincent Gras (16) 37pts
2nd Charlie Lapsley (8) 35pts
3rd Alec Hoare (19) 34pts
This was our last visit to Green Valley on the old layout before it was
reconfigured last week. Hopefully the new layout will speed up the play a
bit but I doubt it.
Our winner today was Vincent Gras with a fine thirty seven points, followed
in 2 points back by Charlie Lapsley who was playing his last game for this
trip. Alec Hoare took third place on count back over Declan Kelly after both
returned 34s on their cards.
We had two 2’s today but one of them was a bit special. Frank McGowan
decided that getting one on a par three wasn’t enough of a challenge so he
holed his second shot on a par four instead. Charlie Lapsley slotted the
other more regular ‘2’.
Tuesday, April 1, Mt. Shadow – Stableford
1st Vincent Hogan (14) 37pts
2nd Frank McGowan (17) 34pts
3rd Vincent Gras (16) 31pts
An extremely hot day today in Mountain Shadow and the heat must have got to
our players as the scores weren’t very good. The course was very quiet and
at least we got around fast, under four hours which is very good. As usual
the course was in good condition with the greens fast.
David Hogan was the only player to beat his handicap and won with thirty
seven points, three ahead of Frank McGowan in second and Vincent Gras had to
settle for third with thirty one.
We had no two’s today.
Thursday, April 3, Burapha – Stableford
1st Joe McArdle (12) 37pts
2nd Jon Batty (10) 31pts
3rd Vincent Gras (16) 30pts
Back at Burapha on Thursday for the first of the Sport Days which offers
excellent value for money at this beautiful course in very good condition.
It is also a long course off the blue tees and with many of the tees back on
the black markers and with very fast greens it provided an excellent
challenge of golf today. We will be making Burapha a regular fixture now
while the Sport Days last.
Joe McArdle was the winner today with an excellent thirty seven points and
he won by six points over second placed Jon Batty. Making his third visit to
the podium this week, was Vincent Gras who completed the day’s prize
winners.
Joe McArdle and Vincent Gras recorded the only ‘2’s of the day.
Note: The Tara Court Golf Group play every Sunday, Tuesday and
Thursday, leaving O’Gara’s Bar and Restaurant in the Tara Court on Pratamnak
Rd. around 10.00 a.m. Sign up either in O’Gara’s and ring Joe on 089 249
1364 and he will book you in.

Girls on top at Green Valley
PSC golf from the Billabong Golf Bar
ROrn and Eng with Pip, Paul,
Peter, Greig, Bob and Barry.
Monday, March 31,
Eastern Star - Stableford
It was a fast round of golf today at Eastern Star today taking just
three hours forty minutes. Eastern Star is in good condition but is
starting to dry out on the fairways and the greens on this day were
inconsistent with some being fast and some dreadfully slow.
As we only had a small field today there were only two places on the
podium with second going to Lloyd Shuttleworth on 35 points, and taking
top spot was Bob Philp with 39, getting 24 of them on the back nine.
There were two 2s today, one from Lloyd Shuttleworth and the other from
our resident ‘2’s specialist Wayne Cotterell.
Wednesday, April 2,
Green Valley – Stableford
With eleven groups playing today including our friends from
Royal Fremantle, we got off to an early start and were finished in just
over four hours. The greens were as good as any in this area, terrific
to say the least and although some of the fairways were a little patchy,
overall there could be no complaints.
The ladies swept all before them today as Jittina Tinpranee took first
place with a great 41 points and Eng Duangwaw alias Eng Cotterell came
in third with 38. The thorn between the roses came in the form of Peter
LeNoury who place second on 39. The minor places were filled by Greig
Ritchie in fourth, Barry Copestake fifth, Paul Greenaway sixth and Bob
Newell seventh, all finishing on 37 points and separated by count back.
There were also four ‘2’s recorded today, coming from JJ Harney, Pip
Mangano, Peter LeNoury and Barry Copestake.
Friday, April 4,
The Emerald – Stableford
On Friday we travelled to the Emerald for the first time in
many months and apart from the GUR along some of the fairways the course
was in great condition. The undulating layout here doesn’t take any
prisoners if you happen to be off your game and today was no exception,
with the scores being just average and no more.
Count backs were required to separate all top four positions today with
Wayne Cotterell taking first place ahead of Doug Douglas in second, both
on 35 points, and the new Mrs Cotterell edging Peter LeNoury out of
third place with both locked together on 34. Peter got some consolation
at he slotted in the only ‘2’ of the day.
Note: The Billabong is situated just off Siam Country Club Road
looking straight down Lake Mabprachan. Give Bob a call on 082 204 3411
if you are looking for a game.

Barry bags a hole in one at PAGS monthly

Door 2 Door’s Dez Chalice
congratulates Barry Copestake on his hole in one.
The last Wednesday of March rolled around and a good
turnout of 115 players arrived for the 3rd PAGS Tournament of 2014 at
Crystal Bay, with the B & C combination the chosen layout. The course was
the hot topic of conversation (moreover the greens), after the round. For
many years Crystal Bay’s greens were amongst the elite in the area but they
currently pale in comparison to those days gone by. Still, the course
generally was in good condition, with some recent reported wet areas from
sprinkler leakages being remedied.

Jeff Cordiero tees off at
Crystal Bay.
The undoubted star of the day was Barry Copestake with a
Hole in One on the tricky B6. This hole always presents problems when
putting, so Barry decided to short circuit that, holing out from 119 yards
with a wedge. Barry generously shouted a drink in for all Shenanigans
attendees at the conclusion of the prize presentation, courtesy of his prize
sponsored by Dez Chalice from Door 2 Door.
Paul McNally (H/cap 3) was the standout golfer as he continued his fine PAGS
form with the day’s best low gross score of 72 and second place in the net
competition. He also picked up a couple of technical prizes for good
measure. The opportunity for technical prizes is an attraction of the PAGS
tournaments, with prizes on each hole and several holes offering 2 & 3
prizes across flights, genders & age groups.
Jeff Wylie (8) was this month’s A flight winner with a day’s high of 42
points, ahead of Paul McNally with 39, and Kenneth Soder (8) took third
after being edged on a count back on the last 3 holes by Paul while Shaun
Merriman on the same score was eliminated at the last 6 hole cut.
B flight (13–18) saw Richard Shutt (H/cap 18) lead the way home with 38
points ahead of JP McCaffery (13) on 37. It was a count back which decided
third place after 4 players signed for 36 points, Cavin (18) claiming the
prize with a clear 19 on the back 9.
The C flight (19–28) required count backs also for second and third spots
after Donald NcGuinnen (24) was the clear winner with 39 points. Terry
Hutchinson (19) with 20 on the back 9 got the nod for second over marker
Heiki Kivinemi (25) who signed for a back 9 of 19, while Ronny Walfridson
was the unlucky player with 18.
The Ladies flight was clear cut with only a small contingent turning out
this month. The winner was Yui Bietry (15) scoring a solid 38 points.
The social side of the PAGS tournaments, the prize presentation at
Shenanigans Jomtien, continued its high standard as golfers, family &
friends got together to support all the prize winners of the day while
enjoying the abundance of tucker served up by Dave & his crew.
This month’s tournament will be held at Greenwood on 30th April at a cost of
1,600 baht inclusive of green & caddy fee, competition & BBQ at Shenanigans
Jomtien. It will again be popular so early registration with Shane on 085
945 9689 is recommended.

Latham shines at Eastern Star
Jomtien Golf with the IPGC

Kari Kuparinen and Ray Gott.
Monday, March 31, Plutaluang – Stableford
Our normal schedule here at Plutaluang is to play two rounds on the North and
West courses and then for a change, swap to the East and South courses as we
normally visit here every three weeks. Today was different as upon arrival we
are told the West was closed for renovation and we were allocated the South and
North nines, which made a different combination for us.
The cut today was made at 6-16 and 17+ and in division 2, playing off a handicap
of 19, Tim Hake scored a remarkable 24 points on the front nine and clung on
with only 12 on the back to take the win. Bob Poole came in second juts one
behind on 35 and in third place on count back was Burnie Sinclair, who edged out
Alan Bissell 16/13 on the back nine after they both came in with 31 points each.

Bob Poole with his hole in one
golf bag prize from the previous week.
The best score in division 1 was a meager 30 points from Walter Weber, two up on
Ron Miller in second with 28 and Dennis Scougall finished in third place with
27.
Near pins went to Mike Chatt, Dannie Larsen, Ron Miller, Dennis Scougall, and
John Williams (2).
Tim Hake birdied the fourth on the South course to record the only ‘2’ of the
day and scoop the second division rollover pot.
Wednesday, April 2, Wangjuntr - Stableford
Just a one hour and fifteen minute journey from Siam Cats and it is
worth the visit here a couple of times a year to play the two courses. Today we
were on the Valley course with two divisions out and the cut at 6-17 and 18plus.
Iain Walsh was the star of the day with his division 2 winning 37 points, a full
10 points ahead of Howard Stanley in second.
Ron Miller, playing off 6, topped the division 1 standings with 33 points and
Kari Kuparinen, also off 6, placed second with 32.
The course was in good condition but there were some wicked pin placements,
including one hole where three players putted clean off the green from 10 feet
away and almost ended up in the water hazard below.
Near pins were claimed by Ron Miller (2), Chris Voller, Toi Blair, Bryan
Priestley and Howard Stanley.
Kari Kuparinen birdied the 6th and Ron Miller the 13th to split the ‘2’s pot in
division 1 while Burnie Sinclair and Howard Stanley did the same in division 2
after both birdied the 17th.
Friday, March 28, Eastern Star - Stableford
Two divisions again today with the cut being almost identical to
Wednesday’s game and there were some high scores returned from the 2 flights.
The top score came in the premier division from Wilf Latham, playing off 12, and
his 41 points left him two clear of Dennis Scougall in second. Dennis in turn
needed a count back to fend off the challenge of Khalifa Nasser, which the
former won 19/18 on the back nine. Khalifa was happy with his third place as he
had already sunk a hole in one on the third hole earlier in the day.
Ray Gott won division 2 with 37 points, beating Peter Davies 17/14 on a back six
count back and Iain Walsh came in third with 36.
Near pins went to Khalifa Nasser, Ron Miller, Dennis Scougal, Tim Hake and Tony
Holehouse.
Both division ‘2’s pots were claimed by Khalifa and his hole in one. A quick
look at his card today after the round showed he had a 1 for the hole in one, a
birdie 2, then a 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7. Quite spooky!

O’Brien stars as Maiko makes an ‘Ace’
PSC golf from Tropical Bert’s
Mike O’Brien and Andre Van Dyk pose with hole in
one exponent, Doug Maiko.
Derek Brook
Tuesday, April 1, Khao Kheow – Stableford
The first Tuesday of every month with our group involves a trip
to play Khao Kheow. The question may be asked why?… and the answer is
because this course is one of the best around and does not make you feel
anything but welcome as you play there. This is also a really difficult test
of golf so when you finish your round you know that if you played well you
deserved your score.
The test for the day was to be the C & A Nines in that order, and seeing as
how the players had ‘done good’ in the last couple of Tuesdays, I thought we
would play off the yellow tees. This is a real test of golf and I really
cannot understand how this layout is considered easier than 18 holes on many
courses we play.

Mark West and Jim Ferris with one of Bert’s finest.
The C Nine was, I believe, an add-on after the original A & B
Nines were finished and to my mind it is a little lesser than the other two. It
does not feel quite as polished somehow, but that is not to say it is any
easier. In fact for me this is the hardest of the three nines. And I started
with two non-returns just to prove it. With the wind blowing fairly strong, the
day turned out quite difficult.
The A Nine, stroke index wise, is classed as even more difficult than ‘C’ but it
has a certain class. After a gentle start it turns quite difficult and the first
par-3 is a real monster when the wind is against you, and as is usual, two from
our four-ball went in the water and one in the bunker. Still, Mashi got on the
green. Talking of the greens, they were quite good on this day, if a little
testing.
Round over, and I have to say this was one of the hottest days I can remember
for some time, it was into the welcome shower and up to the restaurant. The
restaurant has a fine view and it is a pleasure to sit in it and relax after
such a hot day. However it was soon time to return to Pattaya.
Back at Bert’s a little early it was time for the results and the scores were
more like we expect from a tough day at Khao Kheow. In the A Flight, 0 to 17,
the winner was Mark West with 35 points on count back over Brian Parish in
second, while in third place was Maurice Roberts with 34.
In the B Flight, 18 up, the winner was Jim Ferris with 35 points ahead of a
count back on 34 points that saw Tom Herrington in second and George King in
third.
Near Pins: John Hackett, Max Scott, Dick Warberg, AVD
Long Putt: Walter Baechli, Derek Brook
Friday The 4 April 2014: Wangjuntr (Stableford)
With the long journey up to this course we had a smaller turnout than
normal but with the decision to play the Valley Course here we still attracted
enough to turn out a reasonable number. We have just reached the time of year
when the low season starts and the Sports Days have started to come in. So the
regulars who play with us, year in and year out, will still be there every week
playing at low season rates.
So today we turned up at Wangjuntr to play the Valley 18 holes, this after
playing the Highland 18 the last time we came here, and frankly were not very
impressed with it. The Highland course is ‘spectacular’ but overly so.
We are more familiar with the Valley layout having played it a few times before
and we remembered as being an enjoyable course. However, we also remember that
the last time we played it poured down and the place was swamped. We hoped for
better on this day.
Getting to the start here is quite easy and so we were soon underway. As said,
the last time we played here the skies opened and we were hit with a deluge and
today the skies threatened to do something similar. So it was with some
trepidation that we teed off and hoped for a dry round.
Now the good news, there was not one player in our group who didn’t agree that
this course was in really excellent condition and all had a very enjoyable
round. The one minor hiccup was that the greens have two pins on each one and on
the back nine there was some problem which to play to. It was a minor quibble as
the greens were really good.
Of course we expected it was going to rain and it did, however it stopped after
a short time and we were able to complete the round following a brief delay. The
course drained very fast and did not unduly affect play. This is a fine course
and well worth a visit.
Back at Bert’s it was soon time to give the results but not before we all
realized that Doug Maiko had recorded a hole in one. After congratulating Doug,
we announced the day’s winner who was Mike O’Brien with a mammoth 43 points,
leaving the rest of the field in the dust. In second place was Andre Van Dyk,
off his new ‘golfers’ handicap, having played so well of late, with 36 points
and he won on count back over Dave Edwards in third. We then had another count
back on 35 points that saw Andy Purdie in fourth and Jim Ferris in fifth.
Now believe it or not, Doug Maiko then bought all the golfers a drink. Now there
is another first, more surprising even than a hole in one. Well done and thanks
Doug! T.T.F.N.

Smith stays the course at Treasure Hill
PSC golf Bunker Boys @ The Ranch
Monday, March 31, Treasure Hill –
Stableford
Thirteen players turned up to be greeted with an empty course. It
was a fine day that turned out very hot and humid and the course was in
excellent condition and extremely good value at THB800.
Gerry
Cooney.
They are really working hard on this course and it is turning into a real
championship venue. It played like it today and the decision to play off the
white tees, which were well back, added to the difficulty. Only Paul Smith
handled it well with an excellent gross 75 (net 73) for 35 points, aided by
birdies on the final three holes. The next best score on the day was just 29
points.
1st Paul Smith (2) 35pts
2ndMark Stanley (8) 29pts
3rd Gordon Melia (17) 29pts
Near Pins: Paul Smith, Dave Ashman and Gerry Cooney
Wednesday, April 2, Khao Kheow B & A – Stableford
Everybody’s favourite course (well almost) attracted a field of
19 to form 2 flights of good and aspiring to be good golfers. Continuing the
recent trend, we encountered no holdups on arrival and our first 3-ball teed
off on time, not catching up with another group until the final hole.
Temperatures and humidity are creeping up into the seriously leaking bracket
and with very little breeze for respite today there were a few participants
running out of puff towards the end. Course conditions were good with the
greens slower than usual and the fairways still quite hard and in need of
some rain. A couple of very light showers passed overhead but not enough to
make any difference.
The weather definitely took its toll on the field, with only Tony Robbins
(37pts) in A flight and Neil Griffin with 36 in B flight posting par or
better scores. Struggling on the back nine, it was lucky for Neil that he
amassed 23 points on the front although unfair calls of applying the brakes
could be heard from one of his victim’s in the sixes.
A negative mark for the golf club at this time of year is the wheeling out
of “trainee” caddies during the school holidays for the same price of
experienced personnel.
A Flight
1st Tony Robbins (12) 37pts
2nd Paul Smith (2) 33pts
3rd Gerry Cooney (14) 32pts
B Flight
1st Neil Griffin (24) 36pts
2nd Kenny Chung (25) 34pts
3rd Tom McDowell (21) 30pts
Near Pins: Paul Smith, Geoff Hart (2) and Geoff Parker
Friday, April 4, Bangpra – Stableford
The Bangpra course is currently in excellent condition (pity
people at Mountain Shadow and Crystal Bay don’t drop in and see how to
maintain bunkers). Heavy shower on first two holes then hot and humid with
thunder rolling around hills provided some challenging weather conditions.
The first two groups got round in well under 4 hours but there were big
delays to next group as they got caught by another heavy shower.
A Flight
1st Gerry Cooney (14) 35pts
2nd Colin Greig (6) 33pts
3rd Geoff Parker (15) 31pts
B Flight
1st Geoff Cox (16) 32pts
2nd Tom McDowell (21) 31pts
3rd Kenny Chung (25) 30pts
Near Pins: Keith Allen, Gerry Cooney (2) and Kenny Chung.
Note: The Bunker Boys are a PSC affiliated golf society, who now play
out of The Ranch bar on Pattaya 3rd Road (in front of the fire station, and
almost opposite the Buffalo Bar). We play on Mondays, Wednesdays, and

Russell Gilroy dominates
IPGC golf from The Haven

Russell Gilroy and Trevor
Schirmer.
Monday, March 31, Khao Kheow B & C -
Stableford
CSS 73
1st Russell Gilroy (18) 39pts
2nd Markku Tynell (23) 35pts
3rd Bill Shepley (5) 31pts
4th Terry Hodgkiss (22) 30pts
5th Ian Dale (9) 29pts
For once the course did not exact a full penalty on the whole field as for the
first time in a few visits a couple of contenders actually made the standard and
the CSS for the day only rose by a stroke.
Following his win the previous Friday, when he took his first Monthly Medal,
Russell Gilroy continued along the same path to take the day’s competition by
four clear after starting out over the front nine five under. Despite having a
rush of blood in the middle of the back nine, that saw him drop three points to
par, Russell still easily did enough to see himself home.
Markku Tynell ran the winner the closest after he finished strongly at two under
handicap for the inward half to finish in second place, four points ahead of
Bill Shepley in third.
Terry Hodgkiss did not play to his recent potential but had just done sufficient
on the front nine to claim fourth ahead of Ian Dale who had taken five more than
Terry going out but nearly caught up over the last four holes.
There were no 2’s in the first division but Markku Tynell had the sole one in
the second division to sweep the pool.
The Presentations were back to normal with The Doc doing the honours once again
but a little slower and a lot quieter following his return from two weeks away
in the hospital. He had a welcome for new member Fran Mootoo together with
welcome backs for Ian Dale, Chris Kershaw, Colin Kershaw, Arthur Todd, Philip
Voas, John Pearce and Hal Hart.
Wednesday, April 2, Crystal Bay A & C – Stableford
CSS 71
1st Trevor Schirmer (14) 36pts
2nd Takeshi Hakozaki (10) 36pts
3rd Ian Dale (9) 35pts
4th Vincent Gras (16) 33pts
The last time the group played this course it was showing some signs of
improvement, but while these have continued over the fairways, drink stops and
changing facilities, the greens have regressed to as bad as they have ever been.
There needs to be an urgent assessment by the greens-keeper and action taken
before it is too late. In the meantime several players are voting with their
feet which is a sad situation as the group have tried to support the course with
twice monthly reservations but players require a putting surface that gives a
semblance of flatness and consistency of pace.
Amazingly the CSS for the day went down, which was a testament to the condition
of the rest of the course.
Trevor Schirmer added to the longest drive of the day with his first win in many
attempts, much to the delight of the audience at the prize giving. Trevor won a
21 to 18 count back over Takeshi Hakozaki, who could not capitalize on his
member’s local knowledge.
Ian Dale fulfilled his undoubted promise with a solid return of one over
handicap to take third spot ahead of Vincent Gras, who had left himself just a
bit too much to do over the back nine.
There were no ‘2’s in either division which was a fair indication of the state
of the greens as the general quality of the golf and golfers of the day were
above a normal turnout.
Friday, April 4,
Mountain Shadow - Stableford
CSS 73
1st Russell Gilroy (18) 45pts
2nd John Carlin (16) 33pts
3rd Bruce Kusyk (13) 32pts
4th Al Rolnik (19) 31pts
5th Trevor Schirmer (14) 31pts
At the end of the week’s events it is obvious that the low season has started
about three weeks early, no doubt due to the unrest in Bangkok although there is
absolutely no reason for travelers to the Pattaya area to be affected, but
clearly the situation in Thailand generally is having some effect. On the plus
side at least it makes for trouble free golf and no pressure on the way to a
good day of sport.
Russell Gilroy took his second win of the week, after missing out on the
Wednesday, with a stunning round of golf that saw him start out with 22 points
(including no score worse than a bogey) and then followed that with a very tidy
back nine of 23 points, which unfortunately included a zero, to finish at nine
under. His card included two 4-pointers, seven 3’s, eight 2’s and a blob, only
the long par-5 14th round the lake defeated him. Russell’s efforts for the week
ensured that his handicap will be reduced by four for the next few outings.
Second place some twelve shots back was filled by returnee John Carlin who
played along with Russell and still could be found muttering that it was
unbelievable.
Bruce Kusyk slipped into third spot another shot behind John and one ahead of
the count back for fourth and fifth, which Al Rolnik won with a better 14 to 13
to consign Trevor Schirmer to the last step of the podium.
One again there were no 2’s in either division but this time it was due to the
difficulty of the greens rather than their condition, which was excellent.
Amazingly Crystal Bay and Mountain Shadow are controlled by the same group, are
next door to each other, and presumably have the benefit of the same greens
staff, but the difference between the two set of greens are as chalk and cheese.
Note. If you would like to play with The Haven group, you can contact
mobile 094 567 5726 or call in to The Haven Hotel, at 185 Soi 13, between Beach
Road and 2nd Road. All transportation to the course is arranged and you do not
need to sign up prior to the day, but you should be there by 8.15 on Monday,
Wednesday, and Friday on the days that you wish to play. A schedule of courses
to be played can be found on our web site at www.thehaven-hotel.com.

Tom’s 46’er is no April fools
PSC golf from Lewiinski’s Golf Society
Sunday, March 30, Green Valley –
Stableford
A Flight
1st JJ Harney (10) 39pts
2nd Mark Pearson (15) 38pts
3rd Peter LeNoury (11) 35pts
B Flight
1st Barry Copestake (15) 39pts
2nd Peter Henshaw (18) 39pts
3rd Pierre Bietry (18) 37pts
Near Pins: No 4 Mark Robinson, No 9 Paul Shaw, No 12 Ed Wyckoff, No 16 Jim
Bell
Tom
Gorey.
A stiff wind in very hot and humid conditions led to some very good scoring
at the unusually quite Green Valley (perhaps it was because Brian the
Wireless was away back home?) JJ Harney and Barry ‘the boot Copestake shared
the man of the match honours in A and B Flights respectively with
commendable 39-point returns.
JJ Harney was followed up the podium steps by Mark Pearson who was just one
stroke adrift while Peter ‘the right honourable’ LeNoury rounded out the
flight.
Peter ‘the silver surfer’ Henshaw lifted the B Flight silver and Pierre ‘the
magician’ Bietry took home the bronze as they trailed in by one shot
increments.
Good friends Barry the boot and Eddy the Eagle shared the 2’s pot.
Monday, March 31, Greenwood C & B - Stableford
A Flight
1st Ian Pickles (13) 35pts
2nd Thierry Petrement (12) 35pts
3rd Eric Gobert (4) 32pts
B Flight
1st Floyd Briney (26) 36pts
2nd Colin Davis (18) 35pts
3rd Martin Childs (18) 35pts
Once again the course and the conditions promised to be a fine day out at
Greenwood. Playing off the white tees however turned into a bit of nightmare
for most as the scores spiraled out of control with players trying
unsuccessfully to manage the tough conditions. It was certainly a green too
far for the majority.
Man of the match and top in B Flight was Floyd Briney as he returned an even
par round. The Donkey and Martin Childs locked it up at 35 points and only
the count back stopped Martin from getting one over the Donkey.

Barry Copestake & JJ Harney.
Ian Pickles and Monsieur Thierry Petrement
carded the same score in A Flight but Ian left Thierry only the second spot
thanks to the count back. Eric Gobert was three back as he picked up the
bronze.
No 2’s were recorded so it is a rollover on Tuesday.
Tuesday, April 1, Bangpra - Stableford
A Flight
1st Terry Mangan (14) 34pts
2nd Nick Shaw (16) 34pts
3rd Freddy Starbeck (12) 31pts
B Flight
1st Mike Jeffreys (18) 40pts
2nd Barry Oats (21) 38pts
3rd Eddy Beilby (18) 34pts
It was off to Bangpra to battle the lightning fast greens and the marauding
monkeys. Mike ‘the Welsh wizard’ Jeffreys did it best as his 40 points
topped B Flight and the day. Mike was two clear of Barry Oats and four clear
of that esteemed gentleman Eddy ‘the Eagle’ Beilby.
In A Flight, Terry ‘pork chop’ Mangan and Nick ‘Elvis’ Shaw were locked on
34 points and were left to the perils of count back as Terry edged Nick for
the gold. Freddy ‘the quite one’ Starbeck closed the flight on 31 points.
A Co. Offaly gang man who has been a bit quite this trip slotted home the
only 2 of the day to pick up the rollover 2’s pot, a missing persons repot
has been issued.
Wednesday, April 2, St. Andrews - Stableford
A Flight
1st Kevin McEntee (7) 40pts
2nd Eric Gobert (4) 39pts
3rd Ed Wyckoff (11) 35pts
B Flight
1st Martin Childs (18) 38pts
2nd Colin Davis (18) 36pts
3rd William Peach (18) 34pts
C Flight
1st John Ianson (26) 29pts
2nd Ulrik Sinding (30) 28pts
3rd Bruce Walters (30) 26pts
The intrepid golfers who took up the challenge of St Andrews, where the
advice is that players with handicaps of 18 should practice elsewhere,
started out- in awe but generally at or near their handicaps and a slightly
springier step into the showers.
Co. Offaly gang boss Kevin ‘you know who’ at last started to show the form
that we expect as he took the man of the match honours and top spot in A
Flight with a admirable 40 points. Kevin was closely followed up the podium
steps by pay window specialist Eric Gobert a shot in arrears.
Last week’s headline boy Ed ‘our man in the White House’ Wyckoff and Ian
Pickles went to a count back, both on 35 points, and when the divots had
settled there was no room on the podium for Ian.
B Flight was topped out by Martin Childs with a very creditable 38 points,
two ahead of the Donkey who seems to cash in here on a regular basis. Sir
William Peach esquire tided up the flight with 34 points.
C Flight struggled with the conditions as John Ianson took the top spot on
29 points. Ulrich Sinding took the flight silver a shot back and Bruce
Walters plus the Irish pair of Gerry ‘the Irish rover’ Roche and Jimmy
‘good’ Day all returned 26-point hauls. Count back decided it would not be
right to separate the two Micks so Bruce got to lift the bronze and Gerry
and Jimmy got to share a beer at the bar.
Kevin McEntee, Ed Wyckoff, Thierry Petrement and Matt Doyle shared the 2’s
pot.
Friday, April 4,
Crystal Bay B & C - Stableford
A Flight
1st Kevin McEntee (7) 41pts
2nd Takeshi Hakozaki (13) 38pts
3rd Terry Mangan (14) 36pts
B Flight
1st Tom Gorey (15) 46pts
2nd John Feehan (15) 42pts
3rd Nick Shaw (16) 35pts
C Flight
1st Barry Oats (21)35pts
2nd Christy Knight (24) 34pts
3rd Alistair Gall (21) 33pts
It’s not often you shoot 41points and do not even make it into second place
at Crystal Bay, but this was the fate of A Flight’s Kevin ‘you know who’
McEntee who had his best competition round this trip and still came up short
by five strokes. It must have been even more surprising for fellow Irishman
John Feehan who fired a great 42 points and still missed out by four
strokes.
They were both upstaged by Co. Wexford man Tom Gorey who shot a fantastic 46
points playing of his old handicap as he was top man on the day and top in B
Flight. John Feehan took the flight silver with his 42 points as Nick
‘Elvis’ Shaw closed the flight on 35 points.
As you would expect, Kevin’s 41 was the top in the senior flight and he was
three clear of Takeshi Hakozaki, with Terry ‘pork chop’ Mangan rounding out
the flight with a steady even par round.
The junior flight found the course a bit of a challenge as Barry Oats took
top spot with 35 points. Christy ‘the Knight in shining Amour’ rode off with
the silver a shot back as Alistair Gall tided up the flight a further shot
in arrears.
Ed Wyckoff was by far the happiest golfer as he rolled in the only 2 of the
day.
Note: Lewiinski’s is situated on Pattaya land Soi 1, Beach Rd
Soi13/13 near Walking Street. Anyone wishing to play with us just pop in and
add your name to the list or call Colin on 089 826 0764. Transport is

Willem wows ‘em at Khao Kheow
PSC golf from Siam Country Resort

Jeff Wylie, Willem Lasonder and Neil Harvey.
Tuesday, April 1, Khao Kheow - Stableford
Tuesday was a trip to arguably 1 of the best courses in the area, Khao
Kheow, where we played the C & A combination from the yellow tees at a
tad over 6300 yards. The course was in good order, a pleasure to play,
although under clear skies with only a light breeze it meant hot and
humid conditions for the players.
Willem Lasonder (18), who has been in good form of late with his
recently acquired new irons, shot a fine 40 points for the win. The
scores were of a good standard generally with over half the field
equalling or bettering their handicap.
Willem was again too good for Jeff Wylie (8) who scraped in to second
spot with 37 points, ahead of Sam, Jonathan & Martin all on 36.
Near pins were spread around between Neil, Jeff & Willem.
Thursday, April 3, Greenwood - Stableford
Greenwood was the venue for Thursday’s game with the C & B
nines, at 6600 yards from the white tees, being the test of the day. It
was again hot, although a little more breeze than Tuesday kept the
humidity down a bit.
The course was in good condition and really it was a great day for golf.
Jeff Wylie was able to get the better of Willem Lasonder on this day
after he signed for 38 points to Willem’s 35. Willem, the count back
king, just got the better of Neil Harvey (19) on count back 20/16.
Only the 1 technical prize was won today, by Willem, so we paid out to
third which pleased Neil (& Ploy).
Note: Siam Country Resort, Restaurant & Bar is located just off
Siam Country Club Rd, after going under the arch past the 7/11, turn
right after 50 metres, with the venue on the left another 200 metres
along. Golf from here is generally played on Tuesday & Thursday, with
the Resort hosting prompt presentations on both days. As a PSC
affiliated venue we welcome ALL golfers, including ladies & seniors
(>60s) who have opted for the “Silver” tee option. Call 089 094 1841 for
scheduling or enquiries. Hope to see you there, cheers & good golfing!

Ang toughs it out at Green Valley
The Pattaya Golf Society (IPGC) at Rabbi’s Elephant Bar
Green Valley was the venue for the Pattaya Golf Society
on Monday, 31st March as the Soi Buakhao based group finished its high
season with a stableford competition.
The course was in good condition but the greens were slower than many could
remember. A fresh breeze, tees set back and compacted bunkers all added to
the cocktail of skill and luck which is needed to play a course well.
Reinforced by the return of old friends Tony Thorne, Tim Dale and Rabbi, the
group set off in one flight and saw Masashi Iizumi draw a successful visit
to an end with a fourth place finish with 30 points. Sharing second were
Robbie Taylor and Tim Dale with 34 points and Larry Ang was the only player
to make par, therefore winning the day with 36 points.
Robbie Taylor shared the ‘2’s pot with Murray Edwards and Billy Hill
received the consolation beer on his final round this trip. The Booby Bevy
went to “Rabbi” Cohen after his split figures of six and twenty.
The day had begun with the presentation of a hole-in-one certificate to
Wichai Tananusorn after his memorable moment at the course two weeks
previously and the presentation was again splendidly hosted by Shane and
Peter back at the Elephant Bar in Soi Buakhao.
Plaiter again
on track
On Tuesday, 2nd April the Pattaya Golf Society travelled to
Pattavia to try the revamped course on a day when it would be empty. So it
was except for greens staff trying to extend the area of sanding on the
greens. The result was seven heavily sanded greens and eleven in their
normal testing state.
The course was otherwise in good condition with green fairways and excellent
tee boxes. The bunkers however were of coarse river sand, heavily compressed
and from which escape was difficult. The group put on a brave face and did
their best.
Sharing third place were Leigh Abbey, Peter Ditz and Ken Grimes, all on 32
points, whilst the winner was one point better. Dave Plaiter had survived a
very recent four shot cut in handicap to post the winning score of 33
points.
Robbie Taylor recorded the only birdie ‘2’ on the thirteenth and John
Chelo’s day was marked with the Booby Bevy after an uncharacteristic round
with a 15-11 split. Finally, the non winner’s consolation beer was drawn in
favour of Mr Len but a redraw saw Pat Murphy enjoy the cool beer.
Hopefully greens will be in better order when the group travels to Pattavia
next month.
Close call
at Crystal Bay
On Friday, 4th April the Pattaya Golf Society visited Crystal Bay
to play a stableford event on the B and C nines, which were in reasonable
condition but the unkempt bunkers and bobbly, slow greens detracted from
what should have been an otherwise excellent day.
The result was a close contest, with David Thomas firing the best gross of
the day in recording 35 points for third place. One point to the better were
Leigh Abbey and John Mason on 36 points and for Leigh it closed a very short
visit which saw him perform very well in two out of three competitions.
There were no birdie ‘2’s, Larry Ang took the bar’s consolation beer for the
non winners and Joe Dourley was rewarded with the Booby Bevy as a farewell
gesture from the organiser David Thomas.

JJ & Thientong take the plaudits
PSC golf from The Growling Swan

Peter Blackburn, John
Anderson, Lindsay Slender & Tom McMahon.
Peter Blackburn
Monday, March 31, Pattavia – Stableford
We had heard that the new clubhouse at
Pattavia was open and functioning so there was a fair amount of interest
in the day’s competition and after one “no-show” we were left with a
field of 25. The new clubhouse was impressive and the facilities
excellent, with a swift check-in and a very impressive locker room, and
of course no need for the long walk from the “bag drop” area.

JJ Harney
& Thientong Charoenrung.
The course was quiet and for some reason we were asked to start on the
tenth tee which was not a problem and we sent our first four-ball away
15 minutes later than our booked 10.00 am tee time. It was hot and humid
with not much wind and the course was in quite good shape although there
were many bare patches on some fairways and the greens were a bit
inconsistent with some of the pin positions possibly the result of the
greenkeeper having a “domestic” with his missus earlier in the day!
We proceeded at a fairly good pace and although it was necessary to have
a couple of drinks breaks due to the heat we completed our round in four
hours & twenty minutes. The round had been very enjoyable with good
company on an improving golf course and once they get the greens worked
out it will be even better.
The Division A winner was JJ Harney with a fine 39 points and with 2
golfers on 34 points it was necessary to have a count back to decide the
remaining 2 places on the podium. The result was that your writer, Peter
“Blacky” Blackburn (19 point back nine) finished in second place, with
Mike Allidi (17 point back nine) in third spot.
Thientong Charoenrung won Division B with 36 points and in second place
was the departing JC Lhoste with 31 while his fellow countryman Patrick
Poussier came third with 30.
Division A (0-17)
1st JJ Harney (10) 39pts
2nd Peter Blackburn (12) 34pts
3rd Mike Allidi (3) 34pts
Division B (18+)
1st Thientong Charoenrung (19) 36pts
2nd JC Lhoste (23) 31pts
3rd Patrick Poussier (23) 30pts
Near Pins: 4th – Alain Taddei, 13th – Alain Taddei, 17th – Takeshi
Hakozaki
Long Putts: 9th – Mike Gosden, 18th - Patrick Poussier
The Growling Swan NAGA Award for the worst score on the day was won by
Harry Wszola in a three-way count back and he accepted the award like
the good sport that he is.
Thursday, April 3, Khao Kheow B & C –
Stableford
A chance to play at one of our premier golf
courses is always very popular and this showed as we had 40 golfers
signed up to play at Khao Kheow. Obtaining more tee spots was no problem
and we also received a very good green fee rate for the day.
There was no rush as our scheduled start was 10.30 am and we arrived at
the course after a 43 minute drive to find it fairly deserted and were
told we were to play the B & C nines. As expected we were called to the
B1 tee early and our first four-ball hit off 40 minutes ahead of our
booked tee time in hot and humid conditions with just a suggestion of a
breeze.
I cannot speak too highly about the course as it was in magnificent
condition with lush fairways and perfectly maintained greens, which were
just a little bit slower than they usually are and it took a few holes
to adjust.
We played at a steady pace and the heat & humidity forced us to take a
couple of drinks breaks as we completed the full round in four hours &
thirty minutes. One always enjoys the day whilst playing well and 34
points was the worst score in our group and we all were full of praise
for the venue and of course the company was first class.
Your humble correspondent, Peter “Blacky” Blackburn continued his good
form and was the winner in Division A with 41 points, 2 points ahead of
Sal Brizzi in second place and Sunni Khanna came third with 37. There
were 4 golfers on 36 points vying for fourth spot so a count back was
necessary with Frankie “Hollywood” Sharratt (20 point back nine) getting
the chocolates from Marc Robinson (18 point back nine), Mashi Kaneta (17
point back nine) and Martin “Toddy” Todd (16 point back nine).
In Division B it was Tom McMahon who was victorious with 40 points, 2
points ahead of Bob Akapita in second place, while third place went to
the departing Duangjai “Kae” Tusagad who had 36. With two on 35 points
the resultant count back saw Alain “Inspector Clouseau” Taddei (20 point
back nine) finish in fourth place from Ken Hole (18 point back nine).
Breaking through for his first win with us was Lindsay Slender who won
Division C with 38 points and Jack Robertson came second with 37. Gary
Monley was third with 36 points and Andrew “Turtle” Allen scraped on to
the podium to finish fourth with 35.
Division A (0-14)
1st Peter Blackburn (12) 41pts
2nd Sal Brizzi (6) 39pts
3rd Sunni Khanna (12) 37pts
4th Frank Sharratt (13) 36pts
Division B (15-23)
1st Tom McMahon (17) 40pts
2nd Bob Akapita (18) 38pts
3rd Duangjai Tusagad (18) 36pts
4th Alain Taddei (16) 35pts
Division C (23+)
1st Lindsay Slender (25) 38pts
2nd Jack Robertson (25) 37pts
3rd Gary Monley (33) 36pts
4th Andrew Allen (32) 35pts
Near Pins: B3 – John Davis, B8 – Bob Akapita, C3 – Lindsay Slender, C8 –
Duangjai Tusagad
Long Putts: B9 - Jack Robertson, C9 – Brad Todd
The Growling Swan NAGA Award was won once again by John Anderson in a
count back and he wore the cap for quite some time while back at the
bar. Andrew then kindly paraded Deefa the Dog and of course collected
many donations for the needy in Pattaya from our generous Growling Swan
golfers.
Note: Growling Swan Golf welcomes golfers of any persuasion – low
& high handicappers alike, female golfers and beginners. We generally
play Mondays & Thursdays, meeting at The Growling Swan in Soi Chaiyapoon
at 8.00 am with transport departing at 8.30 am. For bookings or more
information please contact Peter on 0806 351 386 or email to

Huel tops scoring charts at Burapha
PSC golf from The Outback Golf Bar

Wednesday Div. B winners
Nut, Kim Danboise and Peter Hausberger with Geoff (standing rear).
Monday, March 31, Burapha -
Stableford
The first venue for the week was our regular visit to Burapha where we
originally elected to play A & B from the blues but for some reason,
better known to the caddies or the starter, we ended up on B & D from
the whites.
We had 36 players, which included Lance Robinson’s group joining us for
the first day of their two week tour. Swedish Jack and Kiwi Glen also
joined us and Jack is now playing off 3.

Lance Robinson, Gordon
Etheridge, Bob McDowell, John Poulter, Colin Jenkins, Jack Huel, Martin
Burbidge & Gary Hallawell.
The course must have played easy, as there were some
great scores returned; two 39’s from John Cunningham and Steve Mann,
followed home by a 38 (73 gross) from the aforementioned Jack Grindvold.
Svenn Lund was having his first game since arriving from Norway the
night before but the colder weather there had done little to affect
Svenn’s handicap as he won Div B with 37pts, after only 20 minutes
warming up on the driving range. Steady Jarod (2nd) was there again with
another 36pts so the handicapper won’t be able to get at him - much to
the disappointment of Geoff and John.
Peter Nixon and Mark Kembrey were the other two on the Div B podium as
they both scored creditable 34’s.
Greg
Hirst.
The day’s top score came from one of our Aussie visitors who admitted he
had a good day out with a very fine 41pts, but for sure he will have a
lot of barracking from the rest of the group to put up with, so well
done Jack Huel. Just one point back was Kiwi Glen with 40pts, another
very good score and he in turn was four points clear of third placed
Bruce McAdam.
There were nine ‘2’s from John Cunningham & Svenn Ole Lund (B3), Gary
Hallawell (B8), Jack Grindvold, Tony Pike, John Poulter & Glen Perkinson
(D2) and Paul Bourke & Kerry Beck (D8).

Tuesday, April 1, Laem Chabang - Stableford
29 players for our return to Laem Chabang for the first time
in 2014 as this was the first of their series of Sport Days during the
low season. The welcome by the staff was great and the caddies were
happy to see us as the high season had not been very good because of the
troubles in Bangkok.
We played the Mountain and the Ocean courses (or A & B on the card) and
both nines were in great condition, with good fairways, greens that were
flat and true and just the right speed for us amateurs. Overall it was a
great experience and I am certainly looking forward to playing every
Tuesday in the low season.
The group was split into two divisions with Ron Dickie taking Div A with
an excellent 38pts from Aussie visitor Martin Burbidge on 37 and a
newbie to the Outback, the American Ian Pickles on 36. Fourth place was
occupied by another of Martin’s travelling companions, Gary Hallawell
who beat Steve Mann on c/b.
Two top drawer scores came in Div B from Tony McDonough and Waldo, both
with 42’s, and just one point back was another Aussie from the group,
Gordon Etheridge, while his mate Colin Jenkins was well back in fourth
with 34.
There were two ‘2’s from Jack Huel and Colin Jenkins.
Div A (0-15)
1st Ron Dickie (6) 38pts
2nd Martin Burbidge (7) 37pts
3rd Ian Pickles (13) 36pts
4th Gary Hallawell (12) 35pts
Div B (16+)
1st Tony McDonough (17) 42pts
2nd Stephen Blazsanyik (19) 42pts
3rd Gordon Etheridge (16) 41pts
4th Colin Jenkins (16) 34pts
Wednesday, April 2, Khao Kheow - Stableford
There is something about Khao Kheow which makes a golfer’s
best game vanish and with the exception of one player today, Nut – aka
Tangphong Phipit, the rest of the 20 strong field once again failed to
play to handicap.
Playing B & A from the yellow tees, we were away on time in fairly
sultry conditions on a busy course which was generally in good nick. The
pace of play wasn’t brilliant but was acceptable and after the exalted
showings from our Aussie group at both Burapha and Laem Chabang, it was
here at Khao Kheow where they crashed and burned. The best they could
offer was the 29pts returned by Colin Jenkins for third place in Div A
and although ‘Scrubbs’, who we later identified as Gordon Etheridge, got
a ‘2’, there was little else on the card of any value. Gary Hallawell’s
card also went astray, probably for the same reasons.
Steve Mann took the honours in Div A with his 34pts while a fast
finishing Jack Grindvold, with 38 gross on A, was just one point back in
second. Nut recorded the best score of the day, playing extremely well
for her 38pts off a handicap of 26 and she and Suzi thoroughly outplayed
Jack and visitor from Hua Hin, Peter Hayes. Welcome to you Peter and
also to Peter Hausberger from Austria who shot 33pts off a 22 h’cap to
take third place in Div B, with Kim Danboise in second on 34.
There was one other ‘2’, from Jack Grindvold.
Div A (0-16)
1st Stephen Mann (10) 34pts
2nd Jack Grindvold (3) 33pts
3rd Colin Jenkins (16) 29pts
Div B (17+)
1st Tangphong Phipit (26) 38pts
2nd Kim Danboise (19) 34pts
3rd Peter Hausberger (22) 33pts
Friday, April 4, St. Andrews - Stableford
There were nine groups today playing at St Andrews due to
Green Valley having a competition. The course was only in average
condition and this is supposed to be one of the better courses in the
area – if our customers had to pay the full rate it most certainly
wouldn’t be on their current list of ‘must-plays’ was a comment made by
many. The bunkers were like concrete as they had very little sand in
them and the greens were very ordinary and didn’t seem to hold their
consistency.
I do believe from a source that they are putting in new sand at St
Andrews and at Green Valley but we will wait and see what happens but
something desperately needs to be done here at St Andrews.
Not that we promote the idea of club throwing but I guess when you can’t
get a birdie on the course (state of the greens?), best you try for one
in the trees - I heard from a dickie bird that somebody threw a club
which landed in a tree and didn’t come down; then to retrieve it he
threw his driver as well. Now he’s got two clubs stuck – See, don’t
throw clubs, it could be dangerous or just very embarrassing.
The division split was a little uneven with nine in Div A, eleven in Div
B and thirteen in Div C, with the best score coming from a newbie with
the Outback, Robert Moore with a very fine 40pts to win Div B from the
returning Sel Wegner (39) and the resurgent Martin Kingswood (38).
Waldo continued his run of excellent form, winning Div C with 38pts from
another man playing well at the moment, Tony McDonough (36) – Tony beat
Carl Luke on count back.
The top division went to no stranger to the podium, Paul Bourke on 36,
beating Kerry Beck on c/b with Peter Nixon one back on 35.
There were five ‘2’s from Peter Nixon & Barry Copestake (3rd), Jimmy
Little (5th) and Paul Bourke & Martin Burbidge (10th).
Div A (0-12)
1st Paul Bourke (10) 36pts
2nd Kerry Beck (11) 36pts
3rd Peter Nixon (11) 35pts
Div B (13-16)
1st Robert Moore (13) 40pts
2nd Sel Wegner (15) 39pts
3rd Martin Kingswood (14) 38pts
Div C (17+)
1st Stephen Blazsanyik (18) 38pts
2nd Tony McDonough (17) 36pts
3rd Carl Luke (17) 36pts
Saturday, April 5, Green Valley - Stableford
It’s pleasing to report a good turnout on Saturday at Green
Valley, although the weather did it’s very best to disrupt the field
with four players cancelling early in the morning. Of the brave-hearts
who played, our Monthly Medal sponsor Greg Hirst of DeVere led the way
having scored only 12 points on the front nine before romping in with 22
on the back for a total of 34pts. He beat Aussie visitor Colin Jenkins
on count back, with Gary Hallawell five back on 29.
With no ‘2’s the podium places went down to fifth place.
The Saturday golf here at Green Valley is aimed primarily at the guys
who work in Thailand, Monday to Friday as well of course to visitors but
regular players are always welcome.
1st Greg Hirst (28) 34pts
2nd Colin Jenkins (16) 34pts
3rd Gary Hallawell (12) 29pts
4th Geoff Braithwaite (8) 27pts
5th Martin Burbidge (7) 27pts

Wilkin signs off with a win
PSC golf from The Caddyshack
Monday 31st March’s outing was at Green
Valley and our departing Scotsman Derek Wilkin (H/cap 20) ended
his holiday with a win on 39 points. Turning back the years in
second place was Bruce Tollit (20) with 35 points, beating the
ever present Ted Gardner (8) on count back.
Derek
Wilkin.
Wednesday saw us take a trip to Bangpra, now that high season is over
and rates are back to being affordable. The monkeys have obviously been
very busy over high season, with lots of little critters about.
The winner was Peter Henderson (18) with 35 points ahead of
runner-up Jason Barnett (4) with 33, and Phonsie McGahan (6) was
flying the flag for the more mature players, returning 28 points
in third.
Friday was another same price switch to St Andrews and we had
Jason Barnett (4) taking the top honors with 37 points. Shooting
a gross 75 on this course is worth some applause. Behind Jason
we had 4 players on 35 points and the count back machine was
called into action. After an hour of consideration, Bruce
finally figured out that Groot Gelten (19) was second, with
Peter Harris (21) in third, Don Hachey (17) in fourth and
Phonsie McGahan (6) in fifth.
Note: The Caddyshack is located on Soi 17 off 3rd Road or soi 8
off Thepprasit Road. All golfers are welcome and reservations
are taken at 081 865 3104
