Thailand and Hong Kong dominate RS:One Asian Championships

Asian Championships, held for the first time in Thailand at the 2014 Top of
the Gulf Regatta. (Photo by Kah Soon Ho)
Held in collaboration with the Top of the Gulf Regatta
and the Windsurfing Association of Thailand (WATH), the RS:One Asian
Championships took place in Thailand for the first time ever last weekend.
Twenty-one racers from seven countries (including the promising new
windsurfing countries of Myanmar and Sri Lanka) took part in three days of
intense competition off Ocean Marina Yacht Club from May 3-5.
The technical conditions and shifty winds provided some challenging
competition over the three days with racing taking place in four divisions:
Men, Espoir Men, Women, and Espoir Women.

RS:One is an exciting, ISAF-approved one-design racing class by NeilPryde.
One sail, one board – everyone competing on the same equipment. And it was
evident at the 2014 RS:One Asian Championships how close the racing is with
the top male and top female windsurfers just metres apart throughout.
RS:One comes from the same racing pedigree as the Olympic RS:X and the
NeilPryde RS:Racing. The universal one-design class allows male and female
racers of all ages to compete on the same equipment.
Leading Thai racer in the Men’s division was Natthaphong Phonoppharat who
started the first day with a run of first places that continued through the
competition, winning seven out of eight races overall – the last race being
a fourth place finish and his drop race for the series.

Kong was crowned RS:One Asian Women Champion after remaining unbeaten in
eight races. (Photo by Kah Soon Ho)
Second place went to fellow Thai sailor Pattaradanai Jinin who also won the
Espoir Men crown, holding off the challenge from the sole Sri Lankan
competitor Chameera Gunawardena, who was third in the Men’s division and
second in Espoir Men. Third place in the Men’s Espoir went to Suttiphong
Krowparkobkit from Thailand.
In the Women’s division, an unbeaten run of eight races secured the Asian
crown for Hong Kong’s Sin Lam Sonia Lo, ahead of Thai Sarocha Prumprai (who
also won Espoir Women) in second, and Wai Yan Ngai (also second in Espoir
Women) from Hong Kong in third.
Third place in Espoir Women went to a racer from upcoming windsurfing
nation, Myanmar, July Hmwe.
Hong Kong and Thailand dominated this year’s RS:One Asian Championships and
as the class grows in popularity the RS:One class will continue its 2014
journey with the European Championships in Cesme (Turkey), the Asian Sailing
Championships and Asian Games in Incheon (South Korea), the Asian Beach
Games in Phuket (Thailand) and at the end of the year the 2014 World
Championships, which will be held in Bintan (Indonesia).
Note: A full review of the 10th sailing of the Top of the Gulf Regatta will
be featured in next week’s Pattaya Mail.

Thai driver Stuvik shines at Nurbürgring Formula 3 opening round
Sandy Stuvik (center) stands on the podium
as the Thai national anthem is played at the end of race 2 of the
opening weekend of the EuroFormula Open at the Nurbürgring in Germany,
Sunday, May 4.
Thai racing star Sandy Stuvik once again demonstrated his burgeoning talent
by dominating both wet and dry conditions at the season opening EuroFormula
Open at the Nurbürgring in Germany last weekend. The 19 year old constantly
stayed amongst the fastest drivers during Friday test sessions in wet and
foggy conditions, showing his determination to be a force to be reckoned
with for the 2014 season.
During qualifying for Saturday’s first race, Stuvik continually caught the
cars ahead of him during his fast laps and needed to find a clear lap
without overtaking in order to set the fastest time. In the end he had to
settle for P2, with only one good clear lap to set a representative time.
In the season opening race on Saturday, the Thai driver had to fend of
several challengers in the first few corners, leaving the pole sitter an
opportunity to open a lead on the first lap. Stuvik then gave chase through
the race and in the end took the checkered flag only 2.9 seconds behind the
Spanish race winner Alex Palou.
For the Sunday qualifying, run at a sunny but cold Nurbürgring, Stuvik was
unbeatable and set his fastest time in the middle of the session and again
repeated the same fastest time at the end of a hard fought qualifying
period. The Thai driver took pole position with a time of 1:51:923, almost 4
tenths faster than the second placed driver.
The 21 Formula 3 cars saw the red lights go out for the second race at noon
and a jump-starting car immediately shot up past Stuvik to take the lead,
however in the second chicane on the first lap Stuvik overtook to regain the
lead and started immediately to pull away from the other cars.
Saturday’s winner Palou managed to move from 6th to 2nd at the start and
gave the Thai driver a chase, but a mid race mistake from the Spaniard saw
Stuvik pulling away with a huge lead. By the checkered flag Sandy Stuvik had
built a lead gap of 10.6 seconds for a dominant victory at the German
circuit.
After the race Stuvik commented: “For Sunday’s qualifying session I was
determined to push to the maximum for a pole position and I felt all the
hard training paid off when I got back up to the front again. In the race I
felt I had a good start and was surprised to see Igor Urien flying past me
into the first corner, however in the second chicane I saw an opportunity to
pass him around the outside and after that I felt I could control the race
pace. It was a fantastic feeling to be back on top of the podium again and
hear the Thai national anthem played in Germany.”
With a 2nd and a 1st place from the two season opening races, Stuvik takes a
commanding lead in the championship with 44 points, with his team mate,
Polish driver Arthur Janosz in second with 30 points and Alex Palou from
Spain in 3rd with 27 points. The next round of the EuroFormula open
Championship will run in Algarve’s Portimao Circuit on the 7-8 June, 2014.
Sandy Stuvik celebrates on his car after winning
the second race of the season opening round of the EuroFormula Open at the
Nurbürgring in Germany, Sunday, May 4.

Phuket Vagabonds win Pattaya Rugby 10’s Cup Final

trophy after winning the Cup final at the 14th Chris Kays Memorial Pattaya
Rugby 10’s tournament at Horseshoe Point Resort, Sunday, May 4. (Photo

The Phuket Vagabonds beat the Mosquitoes F team 12-7 in
the Cup final at last weekend’s Chris Kays Memorial Rugby 10’s tournament
held at the Horseshoe Point Resort from May 3-4.
The fourteenth staging of this popular sporting event was played in a
mixture of stifling heat and heavy downpours, however the heavy showers did
nothing to dampen the enthusiasm of all the participants or spectators.
There was some tremendous rugby displayed both in the main tournament and in
the Kingdom Property Youth tournament for boys Under 16. The foreign
visitors included Stade Khmer a team from Cambodia, the Stray Cats from
Australia and two returnees from Hong Kong, the Valley Griffina and the Hong
Kong Scottish.
In the youth tournament Surawittyakarn from Surin retained the trophy in a
hard fought battle with the Bangkok Barbarians, a newly founded team who
were making their debut at this tournament. The Kingdom Property Plate was
taken out by Thepsirin from Samutprakarn who outlasted Kanjanpisek from
Chacheongsau in the final game to emerge victors 12: 7.
Back in the main event, the Bangkok University team beat Khon Kaen Blue
Hawks 14-7 in the Shield final while Hong Kong Scottish went home with the
Bowl after a low scoring 3-0 victory over Thammasat University. Meanwhile,
the Plate competition saw the Royal Thai Air Force overwhelm Bangkok Bangers
31-0.

Crabb blitzes Burapha with 43 points
Jomtien Golf with the IPGC
Monday, April 28, Burapha – Stableford
It was a very warm and sticky day here and we were allocated the D and A
nines with the field cut into two flights at handicaps 7-16 and 17+.
Friday
winner Karl Flood.
Playing off 20, Andy Crabb recorded the highest score of the day with 43
points, a full 10 points up on Rod Howett who took second on count back over
Burnie Sinclair.
Chris Voller topped division 1 standings with 37 points and Lindsay Phillips
beat Bryan Rought 20/17 on the back nine count back for second after they
both came in with 35 points each.
John Hall and Terry Madsen claimed the nearest the pins in division 1 while
Andy Crabb was the only winner in division 2.
John Hall birdied D8 and Lindsay Phillips D2 to split the ‘2’s pot in
division 1 while in the second division a rollover ensued to Plutaluang.
Wednesday, April 30, Plutaluang – Stableford
It was a beautiful day as we left Siam Cats but as we travel
towards the course the clouds were starting to bubble in the distance. We
teed off on the West with the North to follow and after seven holes the
skies opened up and very heavy rain followed for at least 20 minutes. After
a short delay we continued in light drizzle but this stopped soon after and
we completed the round with no more rain.
Division 1 had a handicap range from 7-17 and Chris Voller took the honours
with 36 points for his second victory in a row. Mike Chatt came in with 35
points for second place and in third was Paul Hartley on 31.
Near pins went to Grenville Hill, Terry Madsen (2), Chris Voller, Paul
Hartley, Rodney Howett, Sid Ottaway and Tom Novak.
Chris Voller and Curtis Hessler both recorded birdie ‘2’s.
Friday, May 2,
Eastern Star – Stableford
As we got around the front nine here at Eastern Star today there
was thunder and lightning all around but we were lucky with the weather and
there was no rain at all on the course.
Frank Weiand shot 41 points to win division 2 ahead of Joe Kubon in second
one point behind and Paul Hartley took third with 38.
Karl Flood beat Jon Batty 12/11 on the back six holes after they both scored
19/19 on the back nine with 37 points each to win the premier division,
while Alan Hansen took third on 35.
Near pins went to Alan Hansen, Grenville Hill, Khalifa Nasser, Mark Stanley,
Joe Kubon (2) and Sid Ottaway.
Khalifa Nasser got the only ‘2’ in division 1 while Paul Hartley birdied the
3rd and Joe Kubon the signature 13th to share the division 2 pot.
We had some very sad news today when we heard of the passing of our good
friend and long time golfing companion Jean Yves Morel. He fought valiantly
and in the end lost his battle with cancer. R.I.P. Jean.

Jack Levy wins 3rd annual
Hoser Memorial Golf Tournament
Tournament organizer Matt
Millar (right) congratulates tournament champion Jack Levy (left).
Original Dream Teamer Jack Levy scored 53 Stableford
points to win the 3rd annual Hoser Memorial Golf Tournament, this year
played at Plutaluang Golf Course on Friday, May 2. Fifty-three points might
sound like a lot, and indeed it is, but to reach such a lofty score one must
certainly work for it. In this case, for this tournament, that means much
bending at the elbow.
In the first 2 tournaments, a modified Stableford system was used. Each
player would start out with a 0 handicap, and for each drink consumed, be
that beer or liquor, 1 stroke would be added to the player’s handicap. That
proved to be an extra advantage for low handicap golfers, so this year the
format was changed slightly to try and even the field. Obviously it worked.
Shawn “Hoser” Field - we miss
you buddy.
For the 3rd annual Hoser Memorial, each player stated his non-alcoholic
handicap, and for each alcoholic beverage consumed on the course, 1 stroke
was added to determine the player’s final handicap. And for sure this year,
drinks were selling like pancakes.
Jack Levy started with a 36 handicap, and somehow managed to consume 19
beverages on the course, and still had 2 pars and 2 bogies. This all added
up to his lofty 53 points.
Last year’s winner, Mike “Dabber” Dabanovich, finished runner-up with 45
points off his original 12 handicap and 17 beverages, for a combined
handicap of 29.
Third place went to perennial highest drinks handicapper, Patrick Asklund,
who scored 43 points off his regular 26 handicap and 23 drinks, for a
“respectable” 49 handicap. After the tournament was over, Patrick declined
to comment, and even declined food, and if one listened close enough, one
might have heard Hoser somewhere saying that Fido must be glad this doesn’t
happen on a daily basic.
Oh no! It’s a toosami!
Wayne Ogonoski and Gordon McKnight did a commendable job
driving the beer cart around the course, making sure everyone’s handicaps
continued to rise. And although there was no toosami in the Gulf this year,
there was certainly one in Golf when, fresh from refilling the beer cart
with beer and ice, gravity reared its ugly head, pulling the cooler off the
back of the cart on a steep hill, spilling all its contents.
All golfers were generously invited to stop by Paul Oven’s home on the way
back into town for a taste of single malt Scotch. About half the field took
him up on the offer - thanks Spot.
(L to R) Matt Millar, Mike
Dabanovich, Paul Ovens and Patrick Asklund, still standing after a grueling
round of golf.
Holiday traffic was stop and go most of the way back into
town, but eventually everyone made it back for the awards presentation at
the Haven for delicious food, even more beverages, and the now-famous Hoser
shakes. Thanks to Stephen and Lamyai.
Matt Millar, who once again organized a great day out (Thanks Matt) stood
for photos with the winner as Wayne Ogonoski announced the results (Well
done Wayne).
The final stop on the journey was a migration to TQ on Beach Road, where
Woody had donated a bottle of vodka to the winner (Thank you Woody). The
bottle was duly consumed on the spot. By this time, it is unknown whether
Hooter and the Blowflies were being played on the sound system, or whether
any Italian questions (intelligent questions) were being asked, but I hear
there was some kind of talk about the Jersey Highway.
(Ed’s note: please don’t adjust your sets, as the above write-up contains a
number of Hoserisms, given that Hoser was the master of malapropisms.)
Trees? What trees?
Jack Levy shows off the form
that won him the tournament.
Just hit the one in the
middle!
(L to R) Gordon, Alex, John,
Jack, Dan and caddy Aoi pause for the cause.

Ferris the form man for April
PSC golf from Tropical Bert’s
Derek Brook (right) and Tom Herrington (left)
with one of Bert’s helpers. Derek
Brook
Tuesday, April 29, Greenwood – Stableford
This golf game is really played between the ears and in some
respect according to ‘Anno Domini’. There is no doubt that with the passing
of the years the power to play the game tends to fade away, but many golfers
compensate for this fall in physical strength with a much better thinking
game between the ears. But some alas do not.
James
Ferris (left) receives the MBMG Golfer of the Month award from Mashi Kaneta.
It has to be said that there are many golfers here who have maintained their
ability well into the three score years and ten, but also some who find
their handicap rise as they get on in years. The scribe was like that until
a couple of months ago and had a handicap that seemed to be flying out.
However, a sudden thought on a day’s golf seemed to remind me of forgotten
actions. The result is a couple of months of playing well and suddenly this
golf game has become a pleasure to play again, and the handicap is falling
like a lead balloon. I wondered what would happen on this day at a Green
Valley that could become anything.
We had a late start but we were still off at 1145 into a strong wind. The
course is in reasonable condition at present but the wind was unsettling on
the day and as we teed off effectually at mid-day, it was very hot, I mean
really hot! As the day wore on we moved into a cooling late afternoon, but
by then of course we were all fried.
The front nine was difficult and not surprising the scribe struggled, while
some in our 4-ball had really good front nines. Still, I was 4 or 5 shots
behind after 9 holes and the question was could I get it back on the
homeward stretch. Surprisingly I played the back nine really well and as we
finished I was living in hope, but the rest had been playing well also, so
we would see.
As soon as we got to Bert’s it was time to announce the results and it was
also time for the MBMG Group Golfer of the Month award which had really been
decided early on as the winner had won the first two competitions of the
month.
So first things first, the winner on the day was your humble scribe, Derek
Brook, with 38 points and a really good back nine. In second was Tom
Herrington with 37 points and we then had a count back on 36 that saw Brian
Parish in third, Dave Cooper fourth and Brian Gabe fifth.
It was then time for the MBMG Group Golfer of the Month to be announced and
the winner was James Ferris. Well done!
Near Pins: AVD, Brian Gabe, Steve Durey (2)
Friday, May 2,
Treasure Hill – Stableford
Not a big group on this day, and with Dick busy moving it fell to
AVD and Brian Gabe to run the event.
Soon booked in it was onto the first tee and away we went. It was a bit
breezy but well within our ability to play, and with the fairways being in
quite good condition we made good speed around the course. The greens were
also in good shape except for the 16th where the multi-grass and was a bit
of a problem.
The round was soon over and it was into transport and back to Bert’s.
Treasure Hill is a difficult course and no one on this day managed to shoot
their handicap, still all in all the scores were quite good.
The winner was Brian Parish with 35 points ahead of Jim Ferris in second
with 34. We then had a count back on 33 points that saw Brian Gabe in third
and Tom Herrington (losing a count back again) in fourth. Alan Sullivan was
fifth with 31 points. T.T.F.N.
Near Pins: Alan Sullivan, AVD, Barry Elphick, Brian Gabe

Scott takes low gross honours at PAGS monthly
Low Gross winner Max Scott
(right) with Bob Watson, Jason McDonald and William Vickers
Clear skies and a light breeze met the players on their
arrival at Greenwood on Wednesday, April 30 to play in last month’s PAGS
tournament.
The golf course was in great shape, with the B & C combination to be the
test for this fine day. The 4th PAGS tournament of the year saw a good field
of 92 players test their skills in an effort to move up the Order of Merit
for the end of year prizes, as well as the huge selection on offer for the
day. There were some good scores at this venue, but given the conditions of
the day higher scores may have been expected, maybe the course was playing a
little tougher than it looked.
A flight winner Kris
Kritsanajootha (center) accepts his rewards.
The numerous sponsors offering technical prizes on every
hole, as well as 1st, 2nd & 3rd in each of the 3 Men’s flights and 1st & 2nd
available to the Ladies that teed it up on this day meant there were plenty
of chances to take home a little something.
One of the stars of the day was Max Scott, playing off a 5 handicap, who
shot 77 to win the Low Gross and second place in the A flight, along with
his maximum of 2 technicals. PAGS policy of each player winning a maximum of
2 technical prizes means any excesses go into the “lucky draws”, which was
the case on this day with both Max and Andrew Purdie. There were a couple of
other multiple prize winners on the day, but generally it could be said that
the prizes were shared around amongst many well satisfied players.
C flight winner Dave Bowers
shows his style.
Kris Kritsanajootha (10) was April’s A flight winner with a solid 37 points,
ahead of the aforementioned Max Scott (5) with 36, while a 3-way count back
decided third spot; Andrew Purdie (11) getting the nod with 21 points on the
back, ahead of Jeff Wylie and Lex Suvin with 19 and 15 respectively.
B flight required a count back to decide the winner after Wolfram Kruger
(18) and Jonathan Fortis (16) both signed for 37 points each. Wolfram
prevailed in the count back 22/21, while Brian Neal (15) got the remaining
podium spot with 36 points.
The C flight was hotly contested, with Dave Bowers (22), the BBQ King,
leading the way with 34 points, with the minor placings requiring a count
back to separate Charlie Ayres (19) and Nick Creasey (28). Charlie got the
nod 19/18, with Jan Johansson and Frank Mills eliminated with 16 and 15
respectively.
Long Drive winner Willem
Lasonder.
The Ladies flight was clear cut, with winner Orn
Kanasaengsrist (17) scoring a day’s best score of 38 points, while the best
of the rest with 34 points was Yui Bietry (15).
While PAGS continues to enjoy great support, with the free BBQ at
Shenanigans becoming a fine social event in its own right, family and
friends are also coming along to the golf to support the players. Despite
the absence of a Hole in One to add to the excitement of the event, there
was plenty of good cheer and well wishes for the participants of another
most enjoyable tournament, and all look forward to May’s event at Khao
Kheow. Contact Shane on 085 945 9689 if you are interested in playing.

Nyborg nails it at Greenwood
PSC golf from the Bunker Boys @ The Ranch
April Golfer of the Month - Gerry
Cooney (left).
Monday, April 28, Greenwood B & C - Medal
We previously visited Greenwood at the end of March when we’d seen a dramatic
improvement in the condition of the course, which had been very dry in the high
season, and today it was immediately obvious that the course had improved even
more. The fairways were soft, with the greens running true and considerably
quicker than many we have played on recently.
Today was a Sports Day, but the course was quiet and our three groups completed
the round without catching up with anyone in front of them, and with the leading
group back in the clubhouse in under four hours. All in all, a perfect example
of the pleasures of low season golf, with a good course in great condition, a
reasonable price and the freedom to play at one’s own pace, although a few
players did suffer in the heat.
Surprisingly it turned out to be great day for the higher handicappers with
Thomas Nyborg leading the way after carding a tremendous score of net 64 (off
h/cap. 25); we can only hope that PSC come to their senses soon and give him a
proper handicap! Roger Mitchell continued his run of good form to take second
place ahead of the medal specialist Peter Habgood in third.
Only two near pin prizes were claimed, again both by higher handicappers, one
going to Peter Habgood and the other giving newly arrived Ken Davidson a small
compensation after a disastrous start (13 over par after 4 holes) had
effectively killed off his chances in the medal competition.
1st Thomas Nyborg (25) net 64
2nd Roger Mitchell (24) net 70
3rd Peter Habgood (20) net 72
Wednesday, April 30, Green Valley – Stableford
The clouds were gathering and the weather looked ominous as we
assembled for breakfast at The Ranch, but our four groups set off undeterred for
the trip to Green Valley. It soon appeared to be a foolhardy decision as we
travelled down highway 36 and the storm broke with torrential rain reducing the
visibility to almost zero. The road quickly began to flood and there was a
three-car shunt at the traffic lights for the turnoff to Green Valley, but all
our vehicles arrived safely.
On arrival at the course it was still bucketing down and the old 17th fairway
was completely flooded, but we decided to have a coffee and see if the rain
would stop, buoyed by the knowledge that this is one of the best draining
courses in the area. After a wait of about 45 minutes, the rain had indeed
stopped and the course was looking playable, so we bit the bullet and as the
first group tee’d off the sun began to break through.
We’d decided to play ‘pick, clean and place’, but the course dried out so
quickly that it proved to be unnecessary, and the round was completed in
searingly hot conditions without a further drop of rain.
The greens were slow and bumpy, in the process of recovering from recent coring,
but nothing could deter Roger Mitchell who came back to the clubhouse with a
fantastic score of 43 points. It was Roger’s third win of the month, but his
late charge for the Golfer of the Month title came up two points short, leaving
Gerry Cooney to take his first title since September 2012.
Only three near pins were claimed, by Geoff Williams, Mashi Kaneta and Peter
Habgood.
1st Roger Mitchell (24) 43pts
2nd Geoff Williams (22) 37pts
3rd Mashi Kaneta (12) 36pts
Friday, May 2,
Khaow Keow B & A – Stableford
We passed through a shower of rain as we travelled up the 7 motorway,
but it was nowhere near as heavy as Wednesday and when we arrived at the course
the weather was overcast but dry. The clubhouse was quiet and we were able to
tee off at our leisure, but it was immediately apparent that the overcast sky
was producing stifling humidity.
The course was in great condition and the round progressed smoothly without any
holdups, bringing the leading group back to the clubhouse comfortably in 4
hours. Thomas Nyborg produced his second impressive round of the week, coming
home with 38 points, which is always a good score on this demanding track.
April’s Golfer of the Month, Gerry Cooney, was as steady as ever, but could only
manage second place ahead of Geoff Parker.
Thomas completed a fine day’s golf by taking all four near pin prizes, a feat
which has only been achieved by three other golfers in the eleven year history
of the Bunker Boys society. His performance on the par three’s consisting of one
birdie and three pars, produced thirteen points which is effectively five points
below his current (but surely soon to be reduced!) handicap.
1st Thomas Nyborg (22) 38pts
2nd Gerry Cooney (13) 36pts
3rd Geoff Parker (14) 33pts

Greenaway garners monthly award
PSC golf from The Billabong Golf Bar
Paul Greenaway (left) accepts the Devere monthly
trophy from Brian Chapman.
Monday, April 28,
Mt. Shadow - Stableford
With just a small team today, led by Cottee, we took off for Mountain Shadow and
as usual it was in great condition with lightening fast greens. This is a course
that eats golf balls for lunch and dinner if you are not on your game; you
either like it you don’t and while it is not one of the scribe’s favourite
courses it still goes on the list as the boys enjoy the challenge.
Friday scramblers: George, Barney, Geoff and Jeff.
The scores were up and down today but Stan had an excuse as he had just arrived
from Toronto and the temp there was about minus 40 when he left. Taking third
place was Tony McDonough with 37 points which a good game around here but he was
beaten on a count back by Sel Wegner also on 37. The consistent Cottee was the
big winner with 40 points - now that is a score on Mountain Shadow. Well done
and thanks for running the show.
There was only one ‘2’ today, coming from Sel Wegner.
Wednesday, April 30, Green Valley - Stableford
Playing Green Valley today we started out under threatening skies,
which soon turned to thunder and lightning so the drinks stops were overloaded
with players trying to stay dry. It didn’t last long, about 40 minutes, and we
were out again on course in great weather.
Our tournament today was for the Devere monthly trophy, kindly sponsored by
Brian Chapman, and the prizes that Brian comes up with are exceptionally good,
with shirts, hats and golf balls all up for grabs. With eight groups playing it
was a well supported day for our sponsors.
The scores were pretty good considering the weather interruption and the
fairways were a little sloppy in places, but they did dry out amazingly quickly.
We had a four-way count back on 38 points to decide third, fourth and fifth
places with John Baikie filling the bottom rung, Owie getting fourth Bob Finley
having the better of it in third. Steve Kilner on the same score missed out
completely as he didn’t have a good back nine.
Owen Walkley came second overall with 39 points, being beaten on another count
back by Paul Greenaway who took the Devere trophy with 22 points on the back
nine.
There were two ‘2’s today, coming from Bob Philp and Peter LeNoury.
Friday, May 2, Plutaluang - Scramble
We played our monthly scramble today - yes a couple of days later
than usual because of the East and South courses being closed for maintenance.
With eight groups playing West and North we were off to an early start in rain
for the first hole but then it abated for the remainder of the round. There was
plenty of thunder around and dark clouds but no more wet stuff.
The scores were all in the 60s apart from one group who managed to get under
that. In our team we had to do a ‘Darl White’ on Phil Elliott, i.e. leaving his
last drive till the final hole, a number we did on Darl a few times. There is a
lot of pressure when everyone else is sitting in their carts and you are the
only one on the tee, but Phil took a practice swing and launched himself like a
miniature Craig Stadler and nailed the ball straight down the middle. Well done
mate and we got a par, but if only we could putt!
Coming in third today was the team of George Barrie, Ron Gale, Robert Frost and
Stan Stoker with a score of 61.9. Second went to The Dodgy Boys (aka) Brian
Maddox, Willim Lasonder, Owen Walkley and Barney Clarkson with 61.1, but it was
the Courtyard Cavaliers turn to win for a change, they haven’t been in the
winner’s circle for some time, so with a score of 58.9 Geoff Couch, Jeff North,
Arch Armstrong and Graham Beaumont were quite a way in front. Well done fellas!
Note: If you are looking for a game of golf, give Bob a call on 082 204

Pat romps home down the Valley
PSC golf from Lewiinski’s Golf Society
Sunday’s winners: Ed Wyckoff
(left) and Pat Reagan.
Sunday, April 27, Green Valley -
Stableford
A Flight
1st Ed Wyckoff (12) 41pts
2nd Dave Boran (15) 38pts
3rd Nick Shaw (14) 36pts
B Flight
1st Pat Reagan (17) 46pts
2nd Pierre Bietry (17) 40pts
3rd Christian Boysen (17) 38pts
Near Pins: No 5 Dave Boran No 8 Colin Davis No 12 Dave Boran No 16 Ludovic
Henninot
It was time to feel good about our game, and what better way to do it than
having a day out at the Sunday configured Green Valley “lay-in” (it’s a
“lay-out” on the week days.) There is no better way to improve your game
than to play an easier course – it’s sort of an “ends” justifying the means”
type deal.
Nick
Shaw.
Well the lads and lasses kindly obliged, firing one 46, a 41, a 40 and five
38’s. You have to go to the lingerie shop across from the plastic surgeons
office to see those kinds of numbers.
But lest the efforts of the winners be diminished, you have to realize that
many in the big Sunday field did not fare so well. So it’s hats off to the
man of the match, Irishman Pat Regan, who had the 46 point output and it
could have been a lot better as Pat stood on forty points after 14 holes.
Unfortunately for him the wheels then fell off as he made three double
bogies on the trot but he still won the B Flight at a canter and he also
picked up a 2.
Pat was six clear of Pierre ‘the magician’ Bietry while Christian Boysen
closed the flight podium, gaining a count back decision over Jum Karagit,
Bruce Walters and John Ianson.
Ed ‘our man in the White house’ Wyckoff led the A Flight players into the
barn with a very creditable 41 points. Big hitting Dave Boran lifted the
silver with38 points and Nick ‘Elvis’ Shaw tided up the flight as he edged
the speechless Freddy Starbeck on count back.
Ian Pickles, Pierre Bietry, Colin Davis, Jim Bell and Jorn Finnerup shared
the 2’s pot with Pat.
Tuesday, April 29, Bangpra - Stableford
A Flight
1st Peter Henshaw (16) 38pts
2nd Laurie McBride (14) 38pts
3rd Ian Pickles (13) 37pts
B Flight
1st Tore Eliassen (17) 37pts
2nd Mick Coghlan (21) 36pts
3rd Barry Oats (19) 35pts
It was back to old favorite Bangpra on Tuesday to battle the lightning fast
greens and anywhere above the hole usually meant a three or four-putt on the
card.
The day’s honours were shared between two of Ireland’s favourite sons, Peter
‘the silver surfer’ and Laurie ‘the Irish rover’, both in A Flight and each
with best of the day 38 point scores. The sharing came to an end however
when the count back handed the bigger bag of loot to Peter. Ian Pickles
closed the flight with a very good 37 points, plus he took home the ‘2’s
pot.
Tore ‘the quite one’ Eliaseen briefly became the Baron of Bangpra as his 37
points nipped his B Flight buddies, Mick Coghlan by a single counter and
Barry Oats by two.
Wednesday, April 30, St. Andrews - Stableford
A Flight
1st Ed Wyckoff (12) 39pts
2nd Nick Shaw (14) 38pts
3rd Freddy Starbeck (13) 36pts
B Flight
1st Alistair gall (22) 33pts
2nd Jim Elphick (20) 32pts
3rd Christian Boysen (17) 31pts
The fear that St Andrews strikes in the golfer’s heart and the fact that
Wednesday is our back to back outings contributed to a smaller crowd than
usual for this fixture. However, the field still warranted two flights and
that was just fine for the man riding a purple patch, Ed ‘our man in the
White House’ Wyckoff, who made his second pay-window trip this week with a
rock solid 39 points. Ed was one stroke clear of Nick ‘Elvis’ Shaw and a
further stoke clear of Freddy ‘the quite one’ Starbeck.
B Flight was the province of Alistair Gall on this day with a one point
victory over Jimmy ‘two shots’ Elphick. Jim was one ahead of Christian
Boysen and Bruce Walters and Christian, as he has done so often, wrenched
the third place money from Bruce under the guise of count back.
Ed Wyckoff made it a day to remember as he slotted in the only 2 of the day.
Congratulations to Peter Henshaw as he took the golfer of the month award
for April from under the noses of the Danish duo with only three points
separating them.
Friday, May 2, Pattavia Century - Stableford
A Flight
1st Nick Shaw (14) 36pts
2nd Laurie McBride (14) 35pts
3rd Bill Steinman (10) 34pts
B Flight
1st Eddy Beilby (17) 37pts
2nd Jonathan Fortis (16) 34pts
3rd Christy Knight (24) 32pts
Although Friday’s traffic can be a challenge, the risk is always worth it to
play a most enjoyable and value for money event at Pattavia Century.
B Flight’s Eddy ‘the Eagle’ Beilby was the man of the match as he was the
only player to better his handicap. Eddy’s 37 points was three clear of
Jonathan Fortis while Christy ‘good’ Knight picked up the bronze a further
two strokes back.
Nick ‘Elvis’ Shaw made it three pay-window visits this week with a steady
even par return to top the A Flight. Ireland’s Laurie McBride and Bill
Steinman trailed Nick up the podium steps by one digit increments and in
that order.
Kevin Waycott, a brace, Nick Shaw, Peter Godfrey, Tom Gorey and Jonathan
Fortis shared the ‘2’s pot.

Soi13/13 near Walking Street. Anyone wishing to play with us just pop in and

Pratt powers to Laem Chabang victory
PSC golf from the Outback Golf Bar
Norm Cheetham (left) with his mate
Wally.
Monday, April 28, Burapha - Stableford
23 Outbackers played A and B from the longer blue tees and surprisingly Div B
had the better scores. The course was in great condition though the speed of the
greens did seem to vary.
In Div B, Kim Danboise edged out the returning Steve Kilner on c/b, both
recording the day’s top score of 39pts. Coming in third was Steve’s partner Owie
Boribun, who scored a very creditable 38.
Kerry Beck had 37 pts to win the higher division from Norm Cheetham’s mate,
two-handicapper Walter Panichi (36) and Bob Finley on 35. Finally, Geoff
Stimpson returns to the UK for a few weeks, so have a good trip and we will see
you in about five weeks.
There were three ‘2’s from Pete Stonebridge (A6) and Geoff Stimpson & Kim
Danboise (B3).
Div A (0-16)
1st Kerry Beck (10) 37pts
2nd Walter Panichi (2) 36pts
3rd Bob Finley (14) 35pts
Div B (17+)
1st Kim Danboise (20) 39pts
2nd Steve Kilner (23) 39pts
3rd Owie Boribun (32) 38pts
Tuesday, April 29, Laem Chabang – Stableford
A small field of just 10 golfers played the Valley and
Mountain nines (C & A) at the magnificent Jack Nicklaus designed Laem Chabang
course, which was, as usual, in great condition. The B loop (Lake) remains
closed for maintenance until mid-May. Although there was a lot of thunder all
around us we were lucky and missed all the storms.
Welcome to Melbourne visitor Geoff Pratt, who had a great 41pts to win the day
from Perth visitor, Matt Badman (38) and regular player and member, Sakorn with
35. Geoff also had the only ‘2’ but his friend and playing partner, Michael
Prideaux, didn’t have such a good day, preferring not to return his card.
It is one of the best courses in the area and with reduced green fees during all
of May to celebrate its 20 year anniversary hopefully it will be better
supported. The Outback will be here every Wednesday, except for the 21st, when
we shall be at The Thai Country Club.
1st Geoff Pratt (13) 41pts
2nd Matt Badman (11) 38pts
3rd Sakorn Pramoolchart (14) 35pts
Wednesday, April 30, Khao Kheow - Stableford
This was our last fortnightly visit to this great course
for a month. We played the preferred two nines (A & B) from the yellow tees with
the course in great shape apart from a few patches on some of the greens, but
they didn’t have any detrimental effect on the play except a little problem on
the A9 green where the local dogs have been scratching at it.
The course continues to be the winner as only Norm Cheetham could match his
handicap with an excellent 36pts, beating Any Makara on 34. Course specialist
Suzi edged out Norm’s mate Wally on c/b, both with 33, and needless to say this
delighted Norm who took all the money.
Also a big welcome back at last to John O’Keefe, who has been off for some time
recovering from knee surgery and was just trying things out and taking it a
little easy, but it won’t take long for him to get back into the swing of
things, so to speak.
There was nobody good enough to get a ‘2’.
1st Norm Cheetham (13) 36pts
2nd Andy Makara (26) 34pts
3rd Suzi Lawton (25) 33pts
Note: The Outback Golf Bar is situated about 6km from Sukhumvit Road
along Soi Siam Country. Call Jack on 081 578 1956.

Triple Crown at Emerald
The Pattaya Golf Society (IPGC) at the Elephant Bar
The Pattaya Golf Society began the new week with a visit
to Emerald on Monday, April 28, to play a stableford competition on the
course which is still undergoing fairway repairs and is therefore not in the
best of conditions, and the greens were still slow.
The round was just one day short of the third anniversary of John Mason’s
“ace” on the thirteenth and he sponsored a near pin on the tough par three
to celebrate, and Tommy Wicklund almost repeated the feat with a tee shot
which finished just three inches behind the hole for the prize. Birdie ‘2’s
were achieved by John Chelo and Erik Anttonen whilst Chris Smith and Tommy
Wicklund produced a brace of birdies for a share of the pot.
In the main event Robbie Taylor scored 37 points for fourth place, with Ken
Grimes, Andrew Purdie and the redoubtable Brian Talbot sharing the win with
38 points each. The bar’s consolation prize went to Dave Plaiter and the
Booby Bevy went to Wayne Morrison for the lowest score of the day.
Edwards emerges from the shadows
On Wednesday, 30th April the Pattaya Golf Society turned out at
Mountain Shadow to play its monthly medal round on the course from the blue
tees. The day began with a very overcast sky but it continued to improve and
the course was in excellent condition with very consistent and quick greens.
The single flight enjoyed a fine competition with Mike King occupying fourth
place with net 76, and David Thomas taking third with net 73. Brian Talbot
ended his trip with net 71, showing again what a consistent golfer he is
with a series of scores which will be difficult to match when next he joins
the PGS later in the year.
The winner was Dave Edwards, for whom the last six months has been the
proverbial golfing nightmare. His quality has never been in doubt but his
swing had lost all its length and accuracy and at times resembled a bag of
spanners. His best gross score of eighty gave him net 67 and was no more
than the hours of practice and trial and error deserved. Hopefully he never
has to tread that particular road again!
There were no birdie ‘2’s and the Booby Bevy went to the Norwegian pair of
Bent Saeverud and Gubbi Innvaer who submitted stableford scores not strokes.
The day’s golf had been an enjoyable one and for Dave Edwards a turn in the
road and a return to better times.
Patience & putts - prerequisites at Pattavia
Great strides have been made by the new regime at Pattavia since
the reopening of the course last year and the Pattaya Golf Society visited
the club on Friday, 2nd May, to play a stableford round. Sadly things got
off to a bad start when there were no caddies available for the pre-booked
group and a late start inevitably ensued.
Play eventually got underway with a motley collection of caddies from
Pattana as well as the home course and some golfers were disadvantaged with
no advice given regarding the subtleties of the greens, which may well be
the most difficult to putt on in the area.
In the single flight Jesper Hansen, Murray Edwards, Gubbi Innvaer and Mike
Firkin all shared third place with 32 points. Playing his final round this
trip Bent Saeverud recorded 33 points to share the win with Craig Thomas,
ironically both golfers making their first visit to the club.
Dave Plaiter took the ‘2’s pot with a fine effort on the thirteenth. Roy
Basset won the consolation beer and the Booby Bevy went to Willie Barbour
for his low score of the day.
The presentation ended on a sad note with the initial reports of the sad
passing of one of the group’s old friends, Jean Morel, earlier in the day.
God bless you Jean, we’ll all miss your comradeship and your smile.

Takeshi sets Crystal Bay alight
IPGC golf from The Haven
Mark Lang, Markku Tynell and Terry Hodgkiss.
Monday, April 28, Crystal Bay C & A - Stableford
CSS 71
1st Takeshi Hakozaki (10) 42pts
2nd Mark Lang (8) 40pts
3rd Paul Young (15) 34pts
4th John Carlin (17) 32pts
5th Trevor Schirmer (14) 31pts
In an otherwise gloomy week for scores, the first venue turned in the
best results by far with the two front runners at least six better than
any of the other scores for the week.
Although the general condition of the course here is excellent, it is
the greens that leave the player with the most abiding memory as most of
them have been invaded with additional varieties of coarse grass. The
result being a tremendous difference in roll over any given green and
reading a putt can mean right to left, quick, slower, faster, very
quick, slow, with a slight left to right at the end. It might well need
a complete relaying of most of the greens before a reasonable game can
be achieved again on these once great putting surfaces, once renowned as
the best in the area and now a sad caricature. It surely cannot be too
much to ask the green keeper from sister course Mountain Shadow, where
the greens are in great shape, to have a quick look and put things on
the right track once again.
The condition of the greens did not faze Takeshi Hakozaki on this day
however, as his local member’s knowledge must have played a significant
part in his almost runaway win, finishing six under handicap. Takeshi
was chased very hard and closely by the runner up, in form Mark Lang,
but a stunning 23 points on the back nine, that included seven
3-pointers and a two and a huge anchor for zero points on the last hole,
saw off the challenge as Takeshi returned his best round ever in
Thailand to win by two.
Mark Lang had started well at three under handicap and a steady one
under back nine would have normally been sufficient to see him home on
most other days but not this one, so second it was to be.
Paul Young slipped into third place a further six strokes back with an
almost very good round, blighted with a zero on each nine, as John
Carling took fourth place another two back.
Considering the state of the greens it was no surprise to find that here
were no’2 in either division.
Before the presentations were made there were welcome backs for Don
Everett and Phil Stevenson, the latter now almost recovered from his
long and futile wait outside his house for Maggie Thatcher’s funeral
cortege to pass by so he could pay his final respects. There was also a
sigh of relief from many as a farewell was given to Mark Lang, leaving
the way clear for a few different names to appear on the podium.
Wednesday, April 30, Mountain Shadow - Stableford
CSS 72
1st Markku Tynell (23) 33pts
2nd Paul Young (15) 33pts
3rd Allen Raaen (7) 28pts
4th Russell Gilroy (14) 26pts
5th Don Everett (19) 26pts
After the stresses of the previous outing it was a pleasure to be
playing once again on greens that although extremely difficult due to
the pin placements were at least very dependable for line and length if
the individual could pick the right ones. Although the course is one of
the shortest in the local area, even off the blue tees, at just under
6,300 yards, it is a stern test for the average golfer with its tight
driving areas and undulating greens, but one that most golfers look
forward to with relish as it is also one of the most picturesque.
Markku Tynell took the top honours of the day after winning a count back
over Paul Young with a better 19 to 16 over the inward half. Markku’s
fine win include a four-pointer and six three-pointers but just three
too many zeros in what could have been a truly outstanding round of
golf.
Paul’s steady round did not include any blobs and with just a little
more luck would surely have proved to have been the winner.
Allen Raaen, pointed up the difficulty of the course as he could manage
just 28 points but that was enough by two to claim third spot ahead of
Russell Gilroy in fourth and Don Everett in fifth, after Russell had won
a count back with a better 15 to 11 as Don subsided over the last four
holes.
Allen Raaen cleared out the first division 2’s pool but there were still
no takers for the second division.
Prior to the presentations being made there was a welcome back for Allen
Raaen following his trek to the North and a very pleasant week spent
immersed in Thai Culture.
Friday, May 2,
Eastern Star - Stableford
CSS 72
1st Terry Hodgkiss (22) 32pts
2nd John Carlin (17) 32pts
3rd Markku Tynell (23) 32pts
4th Darryll Kellett (15) 31pts
5th Russell Exley (9) 30pts
A last minute change of venue was necessary after The Emerald had once
again lost the tee reservations for the group, this being the second
time in succession, and being unable to squeeze the groups into the busy
tee schedule meant a trip down the road after a quick phone call to
Eastern Star, where in fact the cost was less for the day, so not all
bad.
The course was also good although as usual the length of the layout
pressurized too many golfers to hit harder than they could, with the
usual results showing up in the final scores.
Terry Hodgkiss led in the group after winning a three-way count back
over John Carling in second and Markku Tynell in third, as he returned a
best 20 on the back nine and John had a better return of 11 to 10 on the
last six after he had tied with Markku on 17 a piece for the nine.
Darryl Kellett took fourth place just one away from joining the count
back and Russell Exley fifth another one back.
Allen Raaen again showed his prowess on the par threes as he took the
first division 2’s pool on his own as again there were none in the
second division.
Back at the Haven there were welcome backs for Tony O’Neal, Darryll
Kellett and Kevin Blake.
Note: If you would like to play with The Haven group, you can
contact mobile 094 567 5726 or call in to The Haven Hotel, at 185 Soi
13, between Beach Road and 2nd Road. All transportation to the course is
arranged and you do not need to sign up prior to the day, but you should
be there by 8.15 on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday on the days that you
wish to play. A schedule of courses to be played can be found on our web
site at www.thehaven-hotel.com.

Cawse gets the edge on count-back
PSC golf from The Caddyshack
Phil Cawse.
Monday 28th April was at Green Valley and although Mike
Pledger (H/cap 16) recorded 8 consecutive pars, it was not good enough as
Phil Cawse (15) beat him on count back with 40 points. Third place went to
Ben Findon (21) with 38 points.
Wednesday 30th April was a trip to Bangprakong, which is always a delight to
play although a bit on the long side for the higher handicappers. It
probably has the best quality grass of any of the class B courses and it
would be better if it was 20 minutes closer to Pattaya. Continuing his
recent good form was Peter Henderson (15) with 41 points to take the honors.
Friday 2nd May was a same price swop to St Andrews from Green Valley and
again the in-form Peter Henderson (15) took first place with 40 points.
Runner up was Ted Gardner (9) with 39 points and Mike Philips (12) took
third with 35.
Note: The Caddyshack is located on Soi 17 off 3rd Road or soi 8 off
Thepprasit Road. All golfers are welcome and reservations are taken at 081

Buckingham bags the win
PSC golf from the Café Kronborg
Monday. April 28,
Greenwood B & C – Stableford
1st Graham Buckingham (22) 39pts
2nd Niels Hansen (14) 38pts
3rd Jan Lovgreen (18) 37pts
Greenwood was the venue for our first game back after the Songkran
festivities and following a swift check-in we teed off on B1 30
minutes early under partly cloudy skies and in very hot conditions.
The course was in fine condition with very firm greens and even
though it was quite busy we managed to get around in 4 hours. Back
at the clubhouse we said goodbye to Jan Lovegreen who was heading
back to Denmark.
Just the one flight today and Graham Buckingham was the winner with
a fine 39 points, one ahead of Niels Hansen in second while the
aforementioned Jan Lovgreen signed off in style with 37 points for
third.
Big Bill & Bat shine at Emerald
PSC golf from The Growling Swan
Bill Steinman, Frankie Sharratt & Ian
Masterson.
Peter Blackburn
Monday, April 28, The Emerald – Stableford
The Emerald was the venue for our first game of the week
and we had 17 golfers on the starting sheet after one late
withdrawal. We welcomed back Australian Peter Bye and also good
friend Volker Buley from Germany who has returned for another 3
weeks in Pattaya. It was sadly time to say farewell to Brad “Bad”
Todd who will shortly return to Perth, Western Australia, Ian “Bat”
Masterson who is returning to Belfast, Ireland and good mate Frankie
“Hollywood” Sharratt who is going back to Derby, UK after 6 months
in Pattaya and Australia.
Our 2 mini vans departed the GS 5 minutes earlier than scheduled at
8.25 am and headed south, arriving at the course 50 minutes later to
find it practically deserted. There was no rush so we took our time
with preparation and sent our first four-ball away 10 minutes early
at 9.50 am.
Dick Braimbridge, Niall Stuart &
Ebrahim.
The weather was hot and thankfully there was some
breeze to cool things down as we proceeded with no-one in sight
ahead of us. The course was very dry and the greens were just
alright although several were quite slow.
As it was very hot we stopped a couple of times for drinks which
caused the round to be slow and we completed the 18 holes in four
hours & forty minutes. It had been another enjoyable day with
excellent company.
It was very tight at the top of Division A with 2 golfers on 37
points and the count back resulted in “Big” Bill Steinman (19 point
back nine & 12 points on the last 6 holes) being awarded first place
ahead of Mike “Hunter” Gosden (19 point back nine & 11 points on the
last 6 holes) in second spot, with Gerd Riedler coming third with 36
points.
There was another very close finish at the top of Division B as
there were 2 on 39 points so another count back was necessary which
saw Ian “Bat” Masterson (23 point back nine) finish first and Geri
Crilly (19 point back nine) was second, with Ebrahim in third spot
with 36 points.
Division A (0-13)
1st Bill Steinman (10) 37pts
2nd Mike Gosden (12) 37pts
3rd Gerd Riedler (8) 36pts
Division B (14+)
1st Ian Masterson (35) 39pts
2nd Geri Crilly (26) 39pts
3rd Ebrahim (14) 36pts
Near Pins: 5th – John Davis, 13th – Bill Steinman
Long Putts: 9th – Frankie Sharratt, 18th – Geri Crilly
The Growling Swan NAGA Award (awarded to the golfer who has the
worst score on the) was won by the departing Frankie “Hollywood”
Sharratt and he accepted the award like the good sport that he is.
Friday, May 2, Crystal Bay A & C – Stableford
It was once again time to visit one of our favourite golf
courses, Crystal Bay, and we had 18 golfers on the starting sheet.
We assembled at The Growling Swan and welcomed Adrian Schmidt from
Darwin, Australia and it was good to have Takeshi Hakozaki from
Japan back with us once more.
Everyone was on time so our 2 mini vans departed the GS right on
schedule at 8.30 am and we headed North up Sukhumvit Road, arriving
at the course 45 minutes later. The course appeared to be fairly
quiet and we were allocated the C & A nines to be played in that
sequence so our first group, a three-ball, teed off 10 minutes ahead
of our booked time of 10.00 am.
It was hot and humid with ominous looking rain clouds above and in
fact as we putted out on C1 it did start to rain but by the time we
had completed C2 it had stopped. The golf course was in fine
condition with lush fairways and very well maintained greens and we
proceeded at a good pace for three holes until we caught up with a
very slow four-ball in front of us who did slow us down considerably
for the rest of the round.
The humidity was very high after the rain so we took the opportunity
to have a few drinks breaks while waiting for those in front of us
and we completed the round in four hours & twenty minutes.
Nonetheless, it was a very enjoyable day on a very good golf course
with excellent company.
Ebrahim continued his very good form and won the A Division with a
fine 39 points, 3 points ahead of John Davis in second place. With 2
golfers on 32 points a count back was required to determine third
spot which went to your writer, Peter “Blacky” Blackburn (15 point
back nine), who just edged out Alain “Inspector Clouseau” Taddei (12
point back nine).
There were more count backs in Division B and with 2 people on 34
points it was Dick “The Reverend” Braimbridge (16 point back nine,
12 points on the last 6 holes & 5 points on the last 3 holes) who
was declared the winner from Frank “Woody” Donnelly (16 point back
nine, 12 points on the last 6 holes & 3 points on the last 3 holes)
in second place. Another count back was needed to decide third place
and it was Russell Calcutt (16 point back nine) who was victorious
over Volker Buley (12 point back nine) with both scoring 32 points.
Division A (0-18)
1st Ebrahim (14) 39pts
2nd John Davis (14) 36pts
3rd Peter Blackburn (11) 32pts
Division B (19+)
1st Dick Braimbridge (36) 34pts
2nd Frank Donnelly (22) 34pts
3rd Russell Calcutt (35) 32pts
Near Pins: A8 – Peter Bye, C7 - Ebrahim
Long Putts: A9 – Frank Donnelly, C9 – Geri Crilly
The Growling Swan NAGA Award was won by Niall Stuart and he wore the
cap for quite some time while back at the bar.
Note: Growling Swan Golf welcomes golfers of any persuasion –
low & high handicappers alike, female golfers and beginners. We
generally play Mondays & Thursdays, meeting at The Growling Swan in
Soi Chaiyapoon at 8.00 am with transport departing at 8.30 am. For

Lightning strikes twice
PSC golf from Siam Country Resort
Tuesday, April 29, Pattavia -
Stableford
After taking a break for Songkran, when players avoided
the water, there was no escaping a deluge last week as lots of rain
and heavy electrical activity filled the air. Pattavia was the venue
for Tuesday and the players had to take shelter at about the halfway
mark of the round. The course was in good condition and quickly
drained and was back to playable after about 45 minutes with the
weather holding off for the balance of the round.
Jonathan Pratt (10) continued his recent resurgence with a solid 35
from the white tees at about 6,600 yards, just tipping out Jeff
Wylie (7) who could manage only 34 points. Sam was the sole winner
of a near pin this week with the small field.
Friday, May 2, Wangjuntr Highlands - Stableford
Thursday was a holiday so we opted for a Friday game at
Wangjuntr Highlands, as it had been a while since our last trip
here, plus we had a couple of debutants who had not played this
course before.
As the headline alludes to, we were once again caught out by the
weather, with a severe electrical storm and associated deluge
necessitating a rest stop of 1½ hours. However the course was
playable in surprisingly quick time, so it was onwards and upwards
from Hole 6 on, with ‘lift, clean & place’ to ensure fairness for
all.
There was no competition today, to ensure everybody had time to
“smell the roses” as it were, with this course striking for both its
views & hazards. I will say that Jonathan played well in patches,
but all attendees enjoyed the course and the day, despite the
extended delay making it an after dark return to SCR.
Note: Siam Country Resort, Restaurant & Bar is located just
off Siam Country Club Rd, after going under the arch past the 7/11,
turn right after 50 metres, with the venue on the left another 200
metres along. Golf from here is generally played on Tuesday &
Thursday, with the Resort hosting prompt presentations on both days.
As a PSC affiliated venue we welcome ALL golfers, including ladies &
seniors (>60s) who have opted for the “Silver” tee option. Call 089
094 1841 for scheduling or enquiries. Hope to see you there, cheers
& good golfing!
