Beach needs to be less abused
Editor;
Re: Bidding begins on Pattaya Beach sand-refill project - (PM Friday, 27
June 2014) - To keep the beach it needs to be less abused. Too many
umbrellas and vendors. Too many embarkation points for buses full of
tourists who could be getting on boats at Bali Hai pier. This area is simply
over used. Move certain of these activities to Na Jomtien.
Of course incorrect disposal of food leftovers by tourists and inadequate
supply and collection of garbage are also important sources of the rat
problem. Even so, rats are the last thing I worry about on Beach
Road...there is so much else going on.

Science to beach erosion
Editor;
Re: Bidding begins on Pattaya Beach sand-refill project - (PM Friday, 27
June 2014) - There is some science to beach erosion. Placing some
out-jutting barriers can catch and stop the sand. Channeling surface water
and drains and catch basins properly. None of this is in Pattaya
unfortunately.

Boring and repetitive
Editor;
Re: “Why put something in your lungs that doesn’t belong”? Human Being, Jun
27 Mailbag. Mr Being, our bodies were not created with alcohol or fatty
foods in our stomachs either, or wings attached to our back for jumping out
of airplanes or skis attached to our feet for skiing down mountains but a
lot of people ingest those things or do those things. Why? Because they
enjoy them.
It appears that you are all missing the point.
Even if you don’t drive a car, you ride in taxis or buses or whatever. You
purchase products manufactured in factories that billow smoke into the air
and you cook at home creating yet more pollution. In other words, you are
polluting the air that I breathe.
The difference between us is that I am not complaining about it, I am not
verbally abusing you, or calling for your segregation or taxing the hell out
of you.
Why you have all ignored that one simple fact and continued on with these
never ending declarations of your right not to have your air polluted is a
mystery to me because you are all guilty, either directly or indirectly of
polluting the air we all breathe. The question of who is the most guilty is
an enigma that no one seems to want to deal with. You have all chosen to
believe the surgeon general of the U.S. and I have chosen to believe the
World Health Organization. I made that choice while sitting in front of a
shopping mall smoking a cigarette and watching the stalled traffic on
Sukhumvit Road in Bangkok one day. A glance at the smoke from my cigarette
and then at the smoke billowing from the cars convinced me.
So please, until someone does a study to try and ascertain what percentages
of pollution come from which offender, lets put a hold on the “your
polluting my air” declarations. All of which are designed to be the final
word of the debate, but are in fact boring and repetitive.

Rat solution shouted
down by tree huggers
Editor;
Re: Move the garbage bins (PM Friday, 27 June 2014) - No doubt about it we
all would be better off without rats. Several years ago City Hall came up
with the idea of spreading baits about to lessen the problem only to be
shouted down by tree huggers of the dangers to other wild life. One of these
radicals said that rats were one of God’s creatures and had as much right to
be here as us. Let’s try a little of Thai logic. When we have an invasion of
ants into the house, my wife places a saucer of sweet substance outside the
door and they have no reason to come inside. Could this be the reason the
vendors are lax in cleaning their area? While the rats are at the beach they
know their house is free of them. All this is said with tongue in cheek and
I realise is not the ultimate solution.

Infrastructure projects = higher taxes

Re: Thai transport projects proceed (PM Tuesday, 24 June 2014) -
Budget-funded mega infrastructure projects come hand in hand with tax
crusades to get all this financed.

Must live in Oz
to receive age pension
Editor;
Re: Australian aged pensioners leaving to live overseas PM Mailbag June 20)
- I feel that I should expand on Mr. Bill Neal’s published letter for the
benefit of other readers who may be in the same position here in Thailand. I
have been attempting to obtain the Australian Age Pension for more than one
year and have now given up in disgust. I have letters from the relevant
Ministers Office in Canberra and the Senior Advisor, International Services,
Dept of Human Services (which is Centrelink) advising me that I cannot apply
for the age pension and will never get it unless I return to Australia and
live there for two years.
I do maintain an Australian address, a working Australian bank account, and
still have a NSW drivers license and seniors card as well as a Medibank
card. The problem is that because I have been absent from Australia for more
than two years I am now considered a non resident of my own country (where I
was born and worked from 18 to 60, all that time paying taxes).
I quote from the correspondence received as mentioned above:
“Australian Citizens are Australian residents. To qualify for the Australian
Age Pension, you must then be determined to be residing permanently in
Australia.
On returning to Australia for permanent residence, you may apply for the
Australian Age Pension. You may leave the country within 2 years of the
initial arrival; however, your Age pension will cancel from date of
departure. It may only be restored if you return within 13 weeks, and will
be restored from date of return only.”
I hope this clarifies the situation.

Out of sight
out of mind
Editor;
Re: Beach Road rat race continues - In reply to: PattayaGuy33 (PM Friday, 20
June 2014) - You are so right, whilst there are tourists who irresponsibly
discard the their rubbish the vast majority of rubbish in and around Pattaya
is discarded by the Thais whose attitude seems to be out of sight out of
mind. They should learn from Singapore.

Two ways to ruin an economy
Editor;
Re: Pattaya business owners want military government to impose price
controls - (PM Friday, 13 June 2014) - There are two main ways to in a
controlled fashion ruin an economy:
* Price control
* Currency devaluation
Pattaya businesses have opted for the first.
