Runners & walkers hit the beach for charity fundraiser
Poramet Ngamphichet, Chonburi
Member of the House of the Representatives, sounds the horn to set the
competitors on their way.
Jetsada Homklin
The local branch of the YWCA, led by Chairwoman Praichit Jetpai, organized a
charity walk/run event on Saturday, June 21 along the Pattaya beachfront.
Poramet Ngamphichet, Chonburi Member of the House of the Representatives,
sent the competitors on their way along the sandy shoreline from a start
point opposite the Central Beach shopping mall. The route took the athletes
northwards up to the Amari Pattaya and Dusit Thani resorts before returning
back to the start/finish line. Deckchair operators and food vendors had
already complied with requests from City Hall to clear the beach area to
allow the event to take place.
Boys fight for an early lead
in the male under-15 race.
The walk/run was well attended and included a healthy
number of local civil servants, local politicians and personnel from related
organizations, who all gave up part of their weekend to do their bit for
worthy causes.
The race itself was divided into 4 age and gender related categories with
Anan Promsene and Waraporn Jatwisit winning the male and female under 15’s
titles respectively and Sap Singhkaraha and Anyamanee Glapajan taking the
male and female senior honours. Trophies, kindly sponsored by Her Royal
Highness Princess Soamsavali, were presented to the winners and runners up
by the mayor of Pattaya, Itthipol Khunplome.
Winners and runners-up pose on
stage with their HRH Princess Soamsavali trophies.
All money raised from the walk/run event will be used to
support activities and projects that help disadvantaged children and women,
such as the Loving and Supportive Family Project that provides scholarships
to underprivileged students and assists children with special-needs.

Petanque players vie for honours
Petanque players test their
skills at the 13th Pattaya Petanque tournament held at the Pattaya No. 2
School, June 21.
Jetsada Homklin
The 13th Pattaya Petanque tournament was held at the Pattaya No. 2 School
over the weekend, June 21-22 and brought both local and foreign aficionados
of the game into direct competition as they strove to be crowned this year’s
champions.
The Petanque Association of Thailand, along with support from the Royal Thai
Navy, gave their full backing to the event by providing referees and judging
officials for all the games played over the weekend. Pattaya City also gave
its support to the tournament as it continues to encourage public
participation in a sport made famous in the Kingdom by Her Royal Highness
Princess Srinagarindra, the Princess Mother, who made petanque widely known
and played throughout the nation.
At this year’s tournament, the Kittipat Team took the Open Division 1 title,
edging out the Electricity Authority Pattaya City 2 team in the final. The
Jandara team proved too strong for the Tepracha line-up in the Division 2
play-off and the Mor Pan team were the standout winners in the separate
Women’s Division. All winning teams and runners-up received trophies and
cash prizes.

Baechli bags a win
PSC golf from The Golf Club
Walter Baechli (centre) wins
the lot.
Steve Ellison
Monday, June 23, Green Valley (white tees) –
Stableford
1st Walter Baechli (15) 39pts
2nd John Hutt (28) 37pts
How green was your valley? Well in this case, just stunning as we found
ourselves on a beautiful golf course in fantastic condition once again. It’s
hard to beat Green Valley for consistency as the grounds crew here do a
magnificent job of keeping this track in top nick.
The Golf Club has started an unofficial charity group consisting of Phil
Smedley, David Ferris, John Hutt, John Eske and now contributing his
winnings today, Walter Baechli. Caddy “Joy” from Pattavia Century is the
first beneficiary of the funds to give her a new smile. Joy was in one of
our groups earlier this month and the guys noted what poor condition her
teeth had grown into and before you knew it, 50,000 baht had been raised for
her cause.
The group met with her mother and brother and we are now in the long process
of getting her dental problems sorted out one step at a time. We will keep
you posted and have a photo gallery of our progress. Thank you gentlemen,
for being such generous guests here in Thailand. If you care to donate your
time and help, please let us know.
Tuesday, June 24, Laem Chabang B & C (white tees) –
Stableford
1st Les Cobain (8) 40pts
2nd Buddi Nogi (4) 37pts
2nd Mark Bamber (7) 37pts
It was a good day to be a single digit handicapper today as the podium had
but 19 strokes given on the day. Laem Chabang was the venue and Tuesday was
their Sports Day so a good field of 20 golfers headed out to our local Jack
Nicklaus course.
I had a memo sent to me a few days ago from here to let us know that until
October 31, the weekday green fee will be only 1,000 baht. They are giving
us all this special price as renovations in the main building (restaurant,
locker rooms and pro shop) will start now for the next 4 months. This summer
will be a great time to enjoy this beautiful course at a bargain rate!
I’m sure Les Cobain will be back, as his 40 point round was a great result
for this 8 handicapper. Les has proven elusive as of late and getting a
photo of him has been impossible! All right mate, maybe next time. Buddi
Nogi and Mark Bamber ended up tied at 37, three shots back from Les to share
second place on the steps.
Thursday, June 26, Bangpakong (white tees) – Stableford
1st Dale Shier (13) 39pts
2nd David Ferris (25) 38pts
3rd Phil Smedley (9) 35pts
As nice as the other 2 courses were this week, Bangpakong let us down a bit
with temporary greens and the rest of the greens sanded and choppy. Fairways
were perfect and the rest of the course was in fine condition so it wasn’t a
total loss. It was a surprise, really, as Bangpakong is usually in great
shape, but maintenance is one of those necessary evils we must put up with.
That said, Dale Shier had no problem negotiating those greens and with 39
points on the card, we must wonder if he ever even noticed them. Mr. Shier
also put his winnings into the “Cure a Caddy” pot so thanks go to him for
that. Dale was completely overwhelmed by his win and is currently
recuperating on the island of Koh Chang and due to be released shortly.
25 handicapper Dave Ferris was also on fire and a shot behind Shier for
second. Our fearless Golf Captain Phil Smedley turned in a sweet 35 for
third place. Thanks again to all, you guys are great!

Allen & Bruce claim the medals
IPGC golf from The Haven.
Bruce Hilde and Allen Raaen.
Monday, June 23, Crystal Bay - Stableford
CSS 71
1st Allen Raaen (7) 37pts
2nd Bruce Hilde (17) 36pts
3rd Philip Cass (19) 35pts
4th Markku Tynell (23) 33pts
5th Hal Hart (22) 33pts
After a couple of recent visits when the greens were somewhat questionable
they now generally seem to be getting back into shape, and allied to the
general condition of the course the scores on this occasion were quite good.
Allen Raaen started out a very agreeable week’s golf with a win after a one
under handicap round which included a very untypical zero-pointer on a par
3, but he had enough three-pointers to keep the rest of the hard chasing
pack behind him.
Most notable was Bruce Hilde in second place whose round also boded well for
the rest of the week, being just one adrift after returning a level handicap
round and but for no less than three blobs he would surely have taken
another win on this trip.
Philip Cass took third spot with a solid one over scoring five
three-pointers on the way round.
Markku Tynell closed out fourth place after winning a count back over Hal
Hart with a better 12 to 11 on the last six after they had tied the nine on
16 each.
There were no 2’s in the second division but Allen Raaen added to his day’s
collection with the only one in the first division to take the roll over
pool.
Before the presentations were made there was a welcome back for Philip Cass.
Wednesday, June 25, Khao Kheow A & B - Stableford
CSS 72
1st Bruce Hilde (17) 37pts
2nd Allen Raaen (7) 33pts
3rd Shuichi Kodaka (19) 32pts
4th Hal Hart (22) 28pts
5th Markku Tynell (23) 28pts
Perhaps the hole positions were a little easier today, or possibly the
conditions for golf were just about right, with overcast skies and little
wind, or just maybe playing the same A and B courses for the third week
running engendered confidence through a presumed inside knowledge. But
whatever it was, it certainly helped the scoring to be a lot better than on
the previous outings, with the CSS remaining at 72 and the winner actually
breaking par after taking handicap into consideration.
That winner was one of the likely suspects for the week, Bruce Hilde, firing
his best round in Thailand and leaving the chasers some four shots adrift,
even allowing for a couple of slight slips on the sixteenth and the last
when he scored just a single point on the two holes.
The other likely suspect for the week, Allen Raaen, took second place after
a very spotty round that was still good enough to keep many others behind
him and just missing the chance of a double in the week.
Shuichi Kodaka almost got up on the back nine but an unfortunate last three
holes that netted him just five points put an end to his chances for the
day.
Hal Hart took fourth place and gained some revenge for Monday as he won a
count back over Markku Tynell following a better 20 to 14 result.
There were no 2’s in the first division but Bruce Hilde made it a day to
remember as he had the only one in the second division on the signature
island green hole, the eighth on the B course, to clear out the
multi-rollover pool.
Friday, June 27, Greenwood B & C - Monthly Medals
CSS 71
Division 1 (0–15)
1st Allen Raaen (7) net 72
2nd Kevin Blake (8) net 74
3rd Russell Gilroy (14) net 74
Division 2 (16+)
1st Bruce Hilde (17) net 72
2nd Tom McCarthy (19) net 72
3rd Hal Hart (22) net 74
Following the week’s two previous competitions, when the weather had been
just about right for golf, the skies were ominous for the Monthly Medals at
the picturesque Greenwood course on Friday where possibly the two nines
comprising the more difficult of the combinations from the twenty seven
holes, the B and C nines, were the challenge. But with the courses found to
be in excellent condition as usual and the weather remaining clear for the
whole round, the scores were unusually good in both divisions ensuring that
the CSS for the day went down a stroke to 71.
The first division was taken by Allen Raaen, the red hot favourite following
his two immediate previous rounds, with a level par score that included just
one six, which was unfortunately on the last par four on the B, which was
unusually being played last after starting on C. It was Allen’s second medal
success for the year having already secured his place in the end of year
Gold and Silver Medals in the February competition.
Kevin Blake had the better of a count back over Russell Gilroy with a better
35 to 36 on the C course to take second place and leave Russell in a very
creditable third. This followed Kevin’s best round since October the
previous day with the Donovan’s group and indicates a welcome return to his
old form after a difficult period in the golfing doldrums when his language
studies appear to have taken up most of his attention.
The second division winner was also the favourite to win, after his two
earlier efforts in the week, but Bruce Hilde needed to win a count back,
which he did with a better 25.3 to 25.7 on the last six, after tying with
Tom McCarthy over the back nine on 35.5 apiece. The win ensured that Bruce
became the seventh different second division player to qualify for the Gold
and Silver Medals.
Hal Hart was involved in his third count back of the week and won it with a
better 36 to 37.5, which left him in third place and Philip Cass in fourth
but just off the podium.
Allen Raaen took the first division 2’s pot whilst Hal Hart and Tom McCarthy
shared the second division.
Prior to the presentations there was a welcome for new member Robert
Hohenhaus and also a welcome back for Mike Hill who had been away in sunny
England for a cricketing holiday where he unusually did not play but stood
as an umpire and forgot himself when he appealed “How’s that” for leg before
and then decided “Yes, that was out”, which added much to the day’s pleasure
for the crowd.
Note: If you would like to play with The Haven group, you can contact
mobile 094 567 5726 or call in to The Haven Hotel, at 185 Soi 13, between
Beach Road and 2nd Road. All transportation to the course is arranged and
you do not need to sign up prior to the day, but you should be there by 8.15
on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday on the days that you wish to play. A
schedule of courses to be played can be found on our web site at
www.thehaven-hotel.com.

Joe jets in for the win
at Greenwood
PSC golf from Café Kronborg
Joe Vanderwegon.
Monday, June 23,
Greenwood B & C - Stableford
1st Joe Vanderwegon (21) 38pts
2nd Hugh O’Donnell (33) 35pts
3rd Thomas Johansson (3) 33pts
Greenwood golf course was the challenge today and following a quick check-in
we teed off on C1 approx. 15 minutes ahead of schedule in overcast but hot
conditions.
The course on the day was in fine shape, with fast and firm greens.
We managed to get around in a tidy 4 hours and back in the clubhouse
welcomes went out to Thomas Johansson from Sweden, Hugh O’Donnell, just back
from the USA and Spain, and Joe Vanderwegon from Belgium. We also bid a
farewell to Ernst Hansen who was heading back to Denmark.
The aforementioned Joe Vanderwegon was the winner on the day with a fine 38
points, three up on second placed Hugh O’Donnell and Thomas Johansson took
third with 33.
Hamilton in hot form at the Valley
PSC golf from The Billabong Golf Bar
Kevin Hamilton with Brian Chapman from DeVeres.
Monday, June 23, The Emerald - Stableford
The Emerald golf course was the outing today and it is in great condition at the
moment, with fast greens and most of the fairways back to normal after the work
that was done to get rid of the blade grass.
We were joined today by a young man of 71 years playing off a 1 handicap, but
unfortunately on each six he was let down by his playing partners and had to
shell out at the end for all three sixes. It was a grand day for golf no rain
but heavy cloud cover to keep a lot of the heat out.
There were some good scores coming in with a count back on 38 for second and
third, which Greg Hill edged over Phil Waite. Taking first place was Bob Philp
with his best score for a long time of 39 points.
There was only one ‘2’ coming from Lloyd Shuttleworth on the 7th.
Wednesday, June 25, Green Valley - Stableford
Arriving at Green Valley in pouring rain it was out to John and
Geoff’s at the golf driving centre for a cup of coffee and to see what would
become of the day - would it be a wash out or would the intrepid seven groups
play? After about 30 minutes it was decided to give it a go and the rain stayed
away for the most part and it turned out to be a great day for golf.
Friday winners: John, Sel, Eng and
Cottie.
We were joined today by Rosco’s good mates from Karratha,
‘Happy Feet’ and his wife Mrs Happy Feet (alias Monica), plus Noel and Andy from
England who were heard to remark that the weather seemed fairly similar to what
they had just left at home. The course however had stood up well to the
overnight rain and carts were allowed on the fairways, much to our surprise.
The day was our monthly tournament sponsored by Brian Chapman from the DeVere
Group. The winner of the trophy was Kevin Hamilton with a great 40 points, one
ahead of John Player in second who garnered an amazing 24 points on the back
nine, pity about the front-nine mate! In third spot was Mal (if I can say it
right ) Farquharson with 37 points, while fourth went to Sel Wegner on a count
back over Kiwi Bill Marsden, both with 36.
There were four ‘2’s coming from Noi, Bill, Kev and Owen.
Friday, June 27, Plutaluang - Scramble
Playing Plutaluang in our monthly scramble today on the West and
North loops we were met with ideal weather conditions, no rain but just a light
cloud cover to keep out the heat. The course was in great shape and as usual as
tough as hell on these two nines.
The target was to beat the omnipresent Courtyard Cavaliers, and today that
happened. You could have thrown a tea towel over the scores with just 4 shots
separating first to last. It was all about handicap with one team starting on a
1 handicap and another off 10.5 but it was all down to the middle runners to
take the plaudits today.
Coming in at number three was the team of Chris Dodd, Jim Grieve, Don Wilson and
Mal Farquharson with a net score of 61. Second place went to Bob Philp, Lloyd
Shuttleworth, Bill Marsden and Phil Elliott with a net score of 60.6, but the
winners were the team of Sel Wegner, John Player, Wayne Cotterell and Eng
Cotterell, with a net score of 60.1.
It was a good day out for all concerned and all are looking forward to the next
match.
Note: There will be a party at the Billabong on July 5 for the second
birthday party of the bar. Karaoke, pig on a spit, and lots of fun so hope to
see you there.
The Billabong is situated just off Siam Country Club Road looking straight down
Lake Mabprachan. Give Bob a call on 082 204 3411 if you are looking for a game
of golf.

Stonebridge stars at Burapha
PSC golf from The Outback Golf Bar
(From left): Kerry Beck, Nuan Keddie and Jimmy
Little.
Monday, June 23, Burapha - Stableford
Four groups played the C and D loops on a cloudy day with a cooling wind. We
welcomed back Dave Buchanan after a long absence and congratulated him on
becoming a father during that time.
The course was nearly empty as is usual at the moment but in top condition. Pete
Stonebridge brought is ‘A’ game today, scoring a great 42pts to win by five
points over the consistent Peter Nixon on 37. Bob Mattes came third with 35 and
scratch marker, Dave Buchanan fourth with 34pts.
Dave Buchanan (left) with Bob Mattes.
There were four ‘2’s; three from Dave Buchanan, which
included a holed second shot for eagle on D6 and more conventionally, on the 5th
& the 8th and one from Steve Reece, also on the 8th.
1st Pete Stonebridge (18) 42pts
2nd Peter Nixon (11) 37pts
3rd Bob Mattes (22) 35pts
4th Dave Buchanan (0) 34pts
Tuesday, June 24, Laem Chabang - Stableford
A disappointing number of Outbackers played this renowned Nicklaus
course, with just 11 on the C & B nines at Laem Chabang, but fortunately they
were lucky enough to tee off after some heavy rain and have a dry round.
Even though only the one division, Andre Coetzee and Ron Dickie elected to play
from the longer blue tees whilst the remainder were on the more regular whites,
but the power of Andre off the tee was enough to put him in good stead to take
second place with 34pts. Rob Barnes, who has been playing well of late, was the
day’s winner with a creditable 36pts, with Steve Durey back in third on 32.
There were no ‘2’s.
1st Robert Barnes (13) 36pts
2nd Andre Coetzee (08) 34pts
3rd Steve Durey (20) 32pts
Wednesday, June 25, Khao Kheow - Stableford
You could hardly blame the two late withdrawals leaving a small field
at Khao Kheow today on the A & B nines. The journey to the course was pretty
miserable, with heavy showers and poor visibility and it did look very unlikely
that any golf would be played. However, we sat and waited for about half an hour
at the course with a couple of beers and it began to brighten up; ten minutes
later we paid our green fee and were on the course.
Surprisingly, the course had stood up to the rain well and was in good
condition, although were patches of GUR both on the fairways and the greens.
Apart from another light shower around the turn, we enjoyed a very pleasant
round in cool conditions with Barnsey following yesterday’s win at Laem Chabang,
with another win here, this time with 39pts. Greg Hill took the only other
podium place with 38 and General Jack just missed out with 36.
Rob Barnes got the only ‘2’ on B8.
1st Robert Barnes (13) 39pts
2nd Greg Hill (19) 38pts
Friday, June 27, Green Valley - Stableford
Green Valley had a members’ competition on today so we opted to play
Silky Oak instead of the other alternate, St Andrews. 23 Outbackers participated
in today’s game.
The course was in good condition although the greens were slow and we played
from the whites, which are the forward tees as there is many a hole which you
need to carry the water hazards. This course just loves golf balls, and talking
about golf balls it is so easy to play the wrong ball even if you have marked it
and that is why you should always take a look (David) before you decide to play
someone else’s ball as it will cost you.
A big thank you to Kerry Beck who sponsored the near pins today as it was his
birthday a couple of weeks ago and thanks also for helping to get the boys and
girls away off the first tee.
Jimmy Little recorded the day’s top score of 39pts to win Div A by two from
Kerry in second (37) and Dennis Pelly took third with 36, beating JP Maffray on
count back.
In Div B, Andy Makara’s 36pts was enough to win from Greg Hill and Nuan Keddie.
There were a bundle of ‘2’s from Barry McIntosh, Kim Danboise & KerryBeck (5th),
Paul Greenaway & Nuan Keddie (7th), Bob Finley (14th) and Jimmy Little (16th).
Div A (0–18)
1st Jimmy Little (18) 39pts
2nd Kerry Beck (11) 37pts
3rd Dennis Pelly (13) 36pts
Div B (19+)
1st Andy Makara (24) 36pts
2nd Greg Hill (19) 36pts
3rd Nuan Keddie (19) 33pts

Slick greens offer tough test at Bangpra
Jomtien golf with the IPGC
(From left) Grenville Hill,Bryan Priestley
and Chris Voller.
Monday, June 23, Bangpra – Stableford
Our first visit here for some considerable time for certain reasons and
there were six groups out today with the cut set at 7-14 in division 1 and
17+ in division 2.
It was an easy journey up the 7 and with the decent weather conditions it
looked like a promising day out. The course was found to be in very good
condition and the greens were very, very slick and this was reflected in the
scores.
Playing off 8 James McCallan had the best return of the day, winning
division 1 with 33 points. Chris Voller took second place two points behind
and Terry Madsen beat Mike Chatt on a 6/4 back-three count back after they
both came in with 30 points each.
Bryan Priestley topped division 2 with 31 points, one ahead of Jimmy Johnson
in second, and Roar Berger secured third place after beating Bryan Rought
15/11 on the back nine, both on 29 points.
Near pins went to Terry Madsen, Andy Mills (2), Chris Voller, Ray Gott, Sid
Ottaway and Bryan Rought (2).
Ray Gott birdied the 8th for the only ‘2’ of the day so a rollover in
division 1 to Pattaya C.C. on Wednesday.
Wednesday, June 25, Pattaya C.C. - Stableford
There were a few moans last time out here regarding the hardness
of the greens, with no help for the lower handicappers, but they were all
smiling today after the balls were leaving pitch marks and holding on most
of the putting surfaces. The course has definitely improved over the past
few weeks.
There was a light drizzle as we teed off today but it proved only a minor
inconvenience. The field was divided into two flights with the cut at 10-19
in division 1 and 20 + in division 2.
Chris Voller, playing off 10, was the winner in division 1 with 35 points
ahead of Grenville Hill in second one point behind and Terry Madsen was
third on 31.
Rodney Howett topped division 2 with a meagre 31 points while his buddy Roar
Berger was second just two points behind. Jimmy Johnson took third place,
beating Pepo Frick 5/4 on the back three holes after they came in with 27
points each.
Grenville Hill and Terry Madsen won near pins in division 1 while there was
only one winner in division 2, that being Rod Howett.
In the ‘2’s Grenville was in the frame again as he birdied the 16th to take
the division 1 pot. There were no ‘2’s in the second flight.
Friday, June 27, Eastern Star - 1-2-3 Stableford
An individual stableford game today for two divisions as normal
but also a 1-2-3, three person team competition where on the first six holes
the best score is recorded, the next six the best two scores are added
together and the last six holes all three scores are added together.
Paul Hartley was on the top podium position in division 1 today with 35
points, beating Mikael Andersson 21/16 on the back nine. Chris Voller came
in third one point behind.
Ray Gott was the winner in division 2 with 34 points while Iain Walsh took
second on 33 and Jimmy Johnson claimed third after beating Joe Kubon 12/11
on the back six holes, both on 32 overall.
Near pins went to Mikael Andersson (2), Grenville Hill, Marty Rock, Jimmy
Johnson, Frank Kelly and Eiichi Matsumoto.
Mikael Andersson birdied the 6th hole to scoop a rollover ‘2’s pot in
division 1 and Frank Kelly and Iain Walsh both birdied the 17th to split the
pot in division 2.
In the 1-2-3 team event, Paul Hartley, Frank Kelly and Joe Kubon score 80
points in total to win the event, with Mike Chatt, Glyn Evans and Rod Howett
taking second place on 74.

Wylie takes the win,
Paddy to the fore of five
PSC golf from Siam Country Resort
Paddy Devereux.
Tuesday, June 24, Eastern Star - Stableford
Eastern Star was our venue for Tuesday, playing from
the white tees at a little over 6,500 yards, under clear skies with a light
breeze. It was pretty much perfect conditions for golf, with the course
maintaining a good level of maintenance currently, fairways running out and
greens rolling true.
Jeff Wylie (H/cap 6) was the clear leader with 38 points, while the battle for
the minor places was torrid, being settled on a 5-way count back. Yes, 5
players, all with 30 points, and it was Paddy Devereux (21) getting the nod with
a mammoth 21 points on the back 9. He was followed by Yves (33) with 18,
Jonathan (10) 17, Martin (15) 16 and Neil (19) with 15.
Neil and Yves had to be content with joining Jeff in picking up a near pin each.
Thursday, June 26, Rayong C.C. - Stableford
Thursday saw us travel to Rayong Country Club, under
threatening skies which eventually opened up with some rain, but not enough to
deter our hearty bunch.
We played from the whites at just under 6,400 yards, although it did seem to
play longer, or maybe it is just me getting older. The course was in reasonable
condition, for the price, and although it may not fit the bill of some, it
provides a good test with at least 2 holes being amongst the most testing of any
in the area.
Jonathan Pratt (10) played some good golf but a lost ball on the last and let
Jeff Wylie (6), who equalled his score of 33 points, squeak past him for 1st on
count back 17/14.
Near pins went to Martin, Jonathan & Jeff.
A good contingent of SCR golfers went to Pattana on Wednesday with the PAGS
tournament, which was dogged by some heavy rain at times. Not our best day,
result wise, but we still had some fun and everybody that attended the
presentation went home with at least a lucky draw.
Note: Siam Country Resort, Restaurant & Bar is located just off Siam
Country Club Rd, after going under the arch past the 7/11, turn right after 50
metres, with the venue on the left another 200 metres along. Golf from here is
generally played on Tuesday & Thursday, with the Resort hosting prompt
presentations on both days. Call 0890941841 for scheduling or enquiries.

Ito sparkles at Crystal Bay
Travellers Rest Golf Group
Charlie Cox - winner at
Bangpra.
Andy Rich
In the week that will be remembered at the World Cup for the Luis Suarez
affair, at the TRGG it will be remembered for an incident that took place at
Crystal Bay on Friday 27th June when a certain Mr Ito Akitoshi finished his
round of golf with a truly amazing 45 points. Must be a complete bandit I
hear you say. ‘Au contraire’ I would reply.
Ito
Akitoshi - winner at Crystal Bay.
Unlike some I could name who return to Thailand claiming their handicap is
now seven or eight shots higher that it was when they left Thailand three
months before, Ito is a regular with the TRGG and is in my opinion an
honourable and honest Japanese gentleman. Some people will blatantly cheat
to win a golf competition and I have no time for people who would do that,
and they do themselves an injustice by stooping so low. Mr Akitoshi is not
one of those people and I offer my sincere congratulations for shooting such
a magnificent score. I wish I could have been there to see it.
Monday, June 23, Bangpra - Stableford
The week got off to a quiet start on Monday with a trip to
Bangpra. Always a tricky course with a lot of good holes it requires
consistency to get the better of it. So that left me, and I have to say most
of my playing partners, out in the cold.
It was however a close-run finish at the top of the leaderboard where
Charlie Cox just got his nose in front after a count back. Losing out, but
taking second place was Bob Cannon, continuing his good form from the
previous week, and bringing up third place was Craig Worley just a point
behind.
1st Charlie Cox (19) 35pts
2nd Robert Cannon (18) 35pts
3rd Craig Worley (12) 34pts
Wednesday,
It was off to Treasure Hill on Wednesday, another very tricky
course which normally gets the better of most who play it, and on the day
none of the field bettered their handicap. The nearest to succeed was the
previous week’s winner at Pattana, Jim Cooper, who finished with a very
presentable 35 points. He was followed home by Ito Akitoshi, obviously
getting himself prepared for his great effort on Friday.
Derek Thorogood again made it onto the podium, a very regular occurrence
over the last few weeks, to take third spot and only losing out on second
after a count back.
1st Jim Cooper (15) 35pts
2nd Ito Akitoshi (9) 33pts
3rd Derek Thorogood (17) 33pts
The TRGG completed the week with a trip to Crystal Bay (C and A courses),
which is a more forgiving course than most and this was reflected in the
number of good scores on the day.
As already mentioned, Ito Akitoshi had a red letter day, the only downside
is that he is now going to play off seven instead of nine, but I am sure he
will still be there or thereabouts when it comes to handing out the prizes.
Charlie Cox completed a good week by taking second place on count back from
‘Mr. Consistent’ and regular podium dweller Derek Thorogood.
1st Ito Akitoshi (9) 45pts
2nd Charlie Cox (19) 37pts
3rd Derek Thorogood (37) 37pts
Good luck to all you golfers for the coming week and if you would like to
play a round of golf with the TRGG, please phone Fergus Brennan on 086 056
7019 or pop into the Ned Kelly Bar in Soi Lengkee and add your name to the
weekly lists which are posted on the notice board.

Magnifique
The Pattaya Golf Society at The Elephant Bar
Jean Morel Memorial winners, Donal McGuigan
and Declan Kelly, receive the trophy from Khun Tookta, flanked by David
Thomas and Len Jones.
In May the PGS lost a very good friend in Jean Morel,
so in association with his son Louis the group hosted the inaugural Jean
Morel Memorial Tournament on what would have been Jean’s birthday, 26th
June.
The event was to be unique in two ways; the format was Pairs Rainbow
Best Score, never before used for a “major” in Pattaya and it drew the
support of golfers from all of Pattaya’s golf disciplines, IPGC, PSC,
standalone groups and so on. Eastern Star was the venue and the course
was almost empty which gave a cosy and private feeling to the day.
With no experience of winning scores to fall back on no-one knew what to
expect but in most cases homework had been done in making the choice of
tees to take the best advantage of the individual’s handicap. At the end
of the day placings were very tight with a count-back needed to separate
third from fifth place, with the Outback team of “Les Bleus”, comprising
Tim Knight and Sugar Ray Handford scoring best on the back nine and
finishing on 42 points.
Two old friends, Ronnie Ramsay and Tim Lazecki, took second with 43
points but the event was won by the Irish combination of Donal McGuigan
and Declan Kelly with an excellent 46 points, Donal contributing nine
points on successive holes in the middle of the back nine to seal an
outstanding effort.
Near Pins were sponsored by Declan Kelly and Joe McArdle and these were
won by Brian Beaupre and Tim Lazecki.
The special guest at the presentation was Khun Tookta, Jean’s long term
carer and in keeping with the day a toast was raised to celebrate Jean’s
birthday. It had been a unique day and a highly enjoyable one in honour
of an old friend, and at Louis’ request a charity “bonus” donation of
15,000 baht will be passed to Fr. Michael Picharn at the Father Ray
Foundation as soon as possible. “Magnifique mes amis”.
A long hitter’s delight
The Pattaya Golf Society had a treat in store for its golfers
on Monday, 23rd June when Pattana was the chosen venue for a stableford
competition on the splendidly presented B and C nines, a grand total of
6706 yards off the white tees on soft fairways which yielded no run!
With only five holes shorter than 350 yards this would be a day for the
long hitters to show their form. Or the most accurate, as Larry Slattery
was to show with a return of 30 points for third place. In second place
was Aussie powerhouse Andrew Purdie with 31 points but way out ahead of
the rest of the field was Swedish golfer Tomas Nilsson whose 35 points
would have been a dream for most of the field.
There were no birdie ‘2’s and the bar’s consolation beer went to Alan
Walker, Friday’s hero but today’s zero.
With an excellent “vfm” ratio the course will continue to be the golfing
masochist’s favourite track during low season. Stout-hearted lads, these
PGS golfers.
Andrew Purdie continued in the same vein on Wednesday in the group’s
monthly medal event at Greenwood where he returned the group’s second
best score of the year so far, a net 65 to win by a street. In second
place was Tomas Nilsson with net 71, followed by Brian Beaupre in third
with net 72.

Peter wins Freddy’s Birthday Bash
PSC golf from Lewiinski’s Golf Society
Peter and Freddy with friend.
Sunday, June 22, Green Valley -
Stableford
A Flight
1st Les Cobban (8) 41pts
2nd Freddy Starbeck (12) 38pts
3rd Daniel Willet (12) 38pts
B Flight
1st Tom Byrne (16) 39pts
2nd Gerry Roche (20) 38pts
3rd Terry Mangan (15) 38pts
Near Pins: No 5 Gabriel Enright, No 8 Gerry Roche, No 12 Dave Stockman, No
16 Tom Byrne.
Les Cobban was man of the match today with an A Flight winning 41 points.
Looking up at Les on the podium were two regular society members, Freddy
‘the quite one’ Starbeck and Danny Willet, both three shots back of Les.
Danny generously gave Freddy the second spot on the podium as long as Freddy
promised not to tell him about his game, and believe me there is not enough
space in the Mail to do that.
Alistair, Aman, Christian and
Peter.
B Flight was the Irish flight this day as all podium spots were took by
Mick’s. Co. Dublin’s Tom Byrne was the happiest as his 39 points filled the
top spot. As in A Flight the minor places went to count back, both with the
same 38 points; Gerry ‘the Irish rover’ Roche made it two out of two for Co.
Dublin with Co. Wicklow’s Terry ‘pork chop’ Mangan closing the flight.
Freddy Starbeck and Dave Stockman split the 2’s pot.
Tuesday, June 24, Bangpra - Stableford
A Flight
1st Colin Davis (14) 35pts
2nd Gerry Rafferty (17) 34pts
3rd Jacob Olsen (15) 33pts
B Flight
1st Aiden Murray (20) 35pts
2nd Martin Allard (23) 33pts
3rd Mike Jeffreys (18) 31pts
The Donkey, a.k.a. Colin Davis, and Aiden Murray were co-men of the match as
they posted best scores on the day of 35 points in A Flight and B Flight
respectively. Aiden was followed in the junior flight by Martin Allard with
33 points and Mike ‘the Welsh wizard’ Jefferys, who was very pleased to
accept the third spot with 31 points.
The Donkey was followed in the senior circuit by Gerry ‘the Irish rover’
Rafferty, just a shot off the pace, and Jacob Olsen came in a further shot
back.
Gerry Rafferty and Bernard Green split the 2’s pot.
Wednesday, June 25, Burapha A & B - Freddy’s Birthday Bash
A Flight
1st German Odermatt (12) 38pts
2nd Bruce Anderson (8) 37pts
3rd Dipty (13) 37pts
B Flight
1st Peter Henshaw (16) 39pts
2nd Aman (21) 39pts
3rd Christian Boysen (17) 39pts
C Flight
1st Martin Allard (23) 36pts
2nd Gabriel Enright (23) 35pts
3rd Leif Hallin (23) 34pts
56 players turned out to celebrate Freddy Starbeck’s 38th (sic) birthday
with a prize on every one of the 18 holes for the entrants to vie for.
Once again the competition was played in very hot and humid conditions and
this kept the score higher than one would normally expect from such a large
field. The exception was in B Flight that found a triumvirate of players all
returning men of the match 39 points. In the following count back, and when
the divots had settled, it was the luck of the Irish that prevailed as Peter
‘the silver surfer’ Henshaw took the top spot on the podium while Aman and
Christian Boysen took the second and third steps and in that order.
Commiserations must go to the unlucky Alistair Gall as there was no step on
the podium for him.
In the A Flight were the lads who know how to play the game and it was
German Odermatt who took the top rung with a solid 38 points. German was a
stroke clear of Bruce Anderson and Dipty, with the scales tipping in Bruce’s
favour.
Martin Allard, with an even par round, was top in C Flight and the only
player to sink a 2 for what must be the largest 2’s pot ever. Gabriel
Enright and Leif Hallin were strung out in one shot increments as they
filled the minor flight spots.
In the battle for the golfer of the month, The Donkey and Freddy are now
neck and neck with 43 points and Terry ‘pork chop’ Mangan is just a shot
back with only two games to play.
Back at the Phantom Bar it was party time and after the presentation Freddy
rang the bell and thanked all the sponsors and everyone who played. A big
thank you also to Lewiinski’s for providing their famous buffet and everyone
had a great time as the party went on into the small hours.
Friday, June 27,
Mt. Shadow – Stableford
1st Colin Davis (14) 36pts
2nd Danny Willets (12) 35pts
A talented but small group, more than likely due to the not to be missed
Freddy’s Birthday Bash on Wednesday, turned out to take on the Mountain
Shadow layout on Friday. The Donkey, resilient as ever, led the field in
with a solid even par round and was one clear of Danny Willets.
The Donkey and ‘pork chop’ Mangan split the 2’s pot.
Note: Lewiinski’s is situated on Pattaya land Soi 1, Beach Rd
Soi13/13 near Walking Street. Anyone wishing to play with us just pop in and
add your name to the list or call Colin on 089 826 0764. Transport is
provided.

Corner boys sign off in style
PSC golf Bunker Boys @ The Ranch
Mike and Paul Corner took a win each in
their final two games.
Monday, June 23, Treasure Hill – Stableford
We had a good turnout of sixteen golfers for our competition at the
much improved Treasure Hill course. When we arrived at the clubhouse
it appeared that we were the only golfers on the course, so we teed
off at our leisure in overcast and relatively cool conditions.
The round progressed smoothly with no rain and no holdups, although
the temperature did start to rise as the sun broke through on the
inward nine. With all the recent course renovations now fully
settled in, the course is in great condition and always presents a
good test of golf even from the shorter yellow tees which we elected
to play off today.
Following a recent slump, Thomas Nyborg rediscovered the form that
won him May’s Golfer of the Month title, taking the winner’s spot
with 37 points. Sean Murphy continued his run of steady form to take
second place, two points clear of PJ Redmond.
1st Thomas Nyborg (17) 37pts
2nd Sean Murphy (16) 34pts
3rd P.J. Redmond (29) 32pts
Near Pins: Dave Jones, Paul Corner, Ken Young and Mashi Kaneta.
Wednesday, June 25, Green Valley – Medal
It was a grey overcast morning with persistent light
drizzle falling as we had breakfast at The Ranch, so it was no
surprise that several golfers decided to stay in bed.
The rain continued unabated during the trip to Green Valley, but it
wasn’t heavy enough to deter our keen golfers and the first two
groups teed off on schedule. One car (driven by Rab “The Navigator”
McDonald) had however gone missing on the trip, and eventually ended
up at Emerald Golf Club, making the return trip in time to tee off
three holes behind the groups ahead.
Eventually after six holes the skies brightened and the round was
completed in cool overcast conditions, which was great for the
regular golfers but newcomer Gordon Sutherland (making his first
golfing trip outside Scotland) was heard to comment that although he
thoroughly enjoyed his first round of golf here, the temperature was
too hot – what’s he going to think when the sun comes out!
The rain didn’t have any serious effect on the condition of the
course, and the greens were soft and receptive, if running a little
slower than usual.
The scores on the day were a little disappointing, and Mike Corner
was able to record the maiden victory of his visit with a modest
score of net 74. Geoff Parker took second place a point behind
despite a disappointing inward nine, finishing two points clear of
playing partner Colin Greig who’s suffering from lack of practice
whilst refurbishing his condo.
1st Mike Corner (19) net 74
2nd Geoff Parker (14) net 75
3rd Colin Greig (7) net 77
Near Pins: Andy Brady, Geoff Parker, Gordon Sutherland and Paul
Carey.
Friday, June 27, Greenwood C & B – Stableford
Fifteen golfers today for our visit to Greenwood and when
we arrived at the course (even Rab managed to find his way today!)
the car park was virtually empty. It’s a slightly longer journey
than normal, but the condition of the course is good and the current
low season rate provides good value for money.
The sky was bright and sunny, although the fairways were soft from
recent rain, giving very little run, and making the course play even
longer than normal. The round progressed at a steady pace with no
holdups, but the final group did manage to fall a couple of holes
behind.
We were saying farewell today to father and son duo, Mike and Paul
Corner, and Paul duly produced the best performance of his six-game
visit to take the winner’s spot, following on from Dad’s win on
Wednesday. Ken Young took second place ahead of the ever consistent
Gerry Cooney, and Sean Murphy, who was also playing his final game
before heading back to Ireland, was unlucky to miss out on a podium
spot.
Tony Robbins had already secured the Golfer of the Month title, and
despite a somewhat disappointing score on the day, still managed to
take two near pin prizes as consolation.
1st Paul Corner (13) 37pts
2nd Ken Young (27) 34pts
3rd Gerry Cooney (13) 33pts
Near Pins: Geoff Parker and Tony Robbins (2)
Note: The Bunker Boys are a PSC affiliated golf society, who
now play out of The Ranch bar on Pattaya 3rd Road (in front of the
fire station, and almost opposite the Buffalo Bar). We play on
Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, so if you enjoy a fun day out and
a friendly but competitive golf competition, why not come and join
us.
We meet at The Ranch at 9 a.m. for breakfast and transportation, and
new players are always welcome. Contact “Buff” on 086 046 5091 or

Brooks bests the field to land monthly award
PSC golf from Tropical Bert’s
Friday’s top three (from left) Kenny Chung,
Henry O’Brien and Tom Herrington.
Derek Brook
Tuesday, June 24, Crystal Bay – Stableford
The ‘wife’ woke me up with the comment, generally, that I
wanted my head testing as everyone knew it was going to be stormy for
the next couple of days and that I would make better use of my time by
just rolling over and going to sleep. However, forcing my eyes open I
struggled out of bed and half asleep bimbled around to Bert’s.
Dick
Warberg (left) presents the MBMG Group Golfer of the Month award to
Landis Brooks.
It looked a bit grey above but being pretty stubborn I entered Bert’s to
be met by the players for the day. The decision was made we would go,
although there were few of us as this is the quiet time of the year
after all, so off we went.
As we approached Crystal Bay the clouds seemed to clear a little and we
lived in hope. However a surprise met the scribe as I opened my carry
bag to find no shoes and a very clean bag. So new shoes had to be
bought. Then arriving at the first tee I opened my very clean golf bag
to find no golf balls, no tees and all the golf gloves clean and lined
up. As I walked to the tee I also found the gloves inside out - seems
madam had washed everything. Final bite was three drivers in the bag,
happy days!
We found the test for the day was to be the A & C nines, and a very
strong wind was blowing, and while it was helping us at the start we
were mindful of the fact that all too soon it would be blowing into our
face. This also does not take into account the cross wind that took the
ball where it wanted.
The course was in reasonable condition, with the greens on the C nine
slower than the other nine. The fairways also were not too bad but
seemed a bit short of grass.
Golf over and back at Bert’s we were ready for the results, not
forgetting this was also the MBMG Group Golfer of the Month award day
also. The winner on the day was Landis Brooks with 38 points ahead of
Mashi Kanata with 37 in second and Thomas Johansson in third.
The winner of the MBMG Group monthly award was Landis Brooks having won
two competitions in June. Well done indeed on taking his first MBMG
award.
Friday, June 27, Pattaya C.C. - Stableford
Today saw us take the relatively short drive to Pattaya
Country Club. This course had fallen off the radar for a couple of years
due to a major modification programme, but is back on the rotation on
many golf groups and deservedly so. In addition, there are signs that
the weather is returning to more tolerable conditions, and this day was
a fine example. High clouds and a steady breeze kept this almost
pleasant for the round.
Pattaya C.C. gets the award for the ‘most improved’ over the last few
months. Our group had played here a month ago and we were pleasantly
surprised to see notable improvements, especially on the back nine
greens. Fairways are very nice, if a little thin in places, but they
continue to fill in very well. They are also generous in their width but
the payback is well protected greens with gentle slopes affecting most
puts.
The new clubhouse is progressing, maybe a little behind schedule, but it
looks like it will be fabulous when completed. Now if they could just
put some flypaper into the current dining area.
Pattaya C.C. is a good site for scoring opportunities, and on this day
in particular one golfer took full advantage. Henry O’Brien smashed the
competition with a fantastic 42 points, five points clear of second
placed Tom Herrington while Kenny Chung edged out Walter Baechli on
count back for third, both with 36 points. In fifth was Landis Brooks
with 35.
Congrats to all and see you next time.

Blacky wins his second Monthly Mug
PSC golf from The Growling Swan
Ian Parry, Peter Blackburn
& Dave Fletcher.
Peter Blackburn
Monday, June 23, Pleasant Valley – Stableford
Pleasant Valley was the venue for our first game of this
particular week and after one late withdrawal due to a family
bereavement we were left with 24 on the starting sheet.
Buckers was back from the UK and his “driver” Tom Cotton also presented
himself again. We also welcomed back Alan Ray from Melbourne and Steve
Truelove from Sydney. It was sadly time to say farewell to Greg
Preferment who will shortly be returning to Sydney.
When we arrived at the golf course the car park was nearly empty so
after a quick check-in we were all raring to go and told that we would
be starting on the 10th tee, which quite frankly is not my first option
but “it is what it is”!
The weather was good, hot with some breeze and the course was looking in
very good shape with of course the spectacular scenery.
Ken Hole & Mike Gosden.
Our first four-ball got away 15 minutes ahead of our
allotted time at 9.45 am and with no-one directly in front of us we
proceeded at a reasonable pace. As mentioned earlier the course was very
good although damp in parts so we played preferred lies through the
greens and the greens were somewhat slow with a couple of them having
residual sand on them. We stopped for a drinks break just before the
fourth tee and after continuing managed to complete an enjoyable round
of golf with good company in four hours & fifteen minutes.
We had 2 Divisions – Division A for handicaps 0 to 17 & Division B for
golfers on handicaps of 18 and over with three places in each Division.
There were also rewards for nearest the pin on all the par threes and
longest first putts on the 9th & 18th greens.
It was close at the top of Division A with 2 golfers on 43 points and
the resultant count back saw first place being awarded to Mike “Hunter”
Gosden (23 point back nine) with Bob Akapita (18 point back nine)
finishing second. Another count back with 2 golfers on 38 points
resulted in Gerd Riedler (20 point back nine) being awarded third place
with Mike Allidi (19 point back nine) just missing out.
Ken Hole lost 2 shots off his handicap after the previous Thursday’s 49
points at Bangpakong but it didn’t seem to bother him as he scored 41
points and was the winner in B Division. With 2 golfers on 40 points
another count back was needed and resulted in second spot going to
Patrick Poussier (19 point back nine) with Sandy “Cindy Lauper” Leiper
(18 point back nine) finishing third.
The Growling Swan NAGA Award, (awarded to the golfer who has the worst
score on the day and discreetly their score is not made public) was won
by Tom Cotton and he accepted the award like the good sport that he i
Division A (0-17)

Thursday, June 26, Burapha –
Monthly Mug
It was that time again when we play our one and only stroke
round of the month for the Growling Swan Monthly Mug and this month’s
challenge was at the classy Burapha Golf Course.
After a late withdrawal due to illness we were left with a terrific low
season field of 33 golfers and we assembled at the bar in readiness for
our departure. There were old & new faces and welcomes were handed out
to Trevor McLeod & Peter Booth from Bundaberg in Queensland, Gerry Swan
from Jersey in the Channel Islands, Martin Kempton from London, Ian
Parry from Melbourne, Dave Fletcher from his work in Western Australia
back with us again, Steve Newton on a “flying” visit from his work in
Singapore and Growling Swan stalwart Martin “Toddy” Todd back again from
Mandurah in Western Australia for another 3 months.
After a 30 minute drive we arrived at the course where it was
surprisingly quiet. After the downpours of the previous day most eyes
kept glancing upwards at the overcast skies but we all knew deep down
that the “rain gods” would look after us and indeed they did! After
checking in and getting ready we went down to the assembly area and
after a quick practice putt for some we were caught off guard a little
bit when told we could start, a very rare occurrence at Burapha.
C & D were our designated nines so off we went to C1 where there were no
other groups ahead to be seen and our first four-ball got away 15
minutes ahead of schedule at 9.45 am. I must mention that the first
group consisted of T.C., Buckers, the amazingly colorful Walter Baechli
and myself so I knew that regardless of the standard of golf played it
would be a very enjoyable day and indeed it was.
The weather was perfect, not very hot with a nice breeze and the golf
course was in absolutely superb condition with the greens on these two
nines being among the best anywhere. We proceeded at a very good pace
and after completing the first nine in two hours we maintained that rate
of progress and completed the round in just a tad over four hours. It
had been a fabulous day with top class company and lots of laughs on a
super golf course.
In addition to the Monthly Mug award we were able to have 2 divisions
with A Division being for handicaps 0 to 18 & B Division for handicaps
of 19 and over with 6 prizes in each. There were also rewards for
nearest the pins all the par threes and longest first putts on the C9 &
D9 greens.
I’m convinced that it was the good company that I had that enabled me,
your writer, Peter “Blacky” Blackburn to score a net 68 and win my
second Growling Swan Monthly Mug, having won the very first one two
years previous.
In Division A the winner was Ian Parry with a net 71 and with three
golfers on net 72 it was count back time. This resulted in second place
going to Steve Truelove (net 34 back nine and net 19 on the last 6
holes) with “Big” Bill Steinman (net 34 back nine and net 24 on the last
6 holes) finishing third and Mashi Kaneta (net 36 back nine) was fourth.
In another count back fifth place was awarded to Mike “Hunter” Gosden
(net 38 back nine) and sixth place went to Trevor McLeod (net 38 back
nine) both having carded a net 74.
In B Division it was Dave “Fletch” Fletcher who emerged for his first
ever win with us after shooting net 73. There were 2 golfers with net 76
and the count back saw second place going to Steve Newton (net 36 back
nine) and Sandy “Cindy Lauper” Leiper (net 37 back nine) was third. In
fourth place was Lindsay Slender with net 77 (those daily visits to the
Driving Range are starting to pay off!) followed by Gary Monley in fifth
spot after a net 78 and Geri Crilly finished sixth with a net 79.
The Growling Swan NAGA Award was won by Growling Swan Mine Host Peter
Grey.
