Stuvik loses championship lead in Hungary

Thailand’s Sandy Stuvik (front left) challenges
for the lead at the start of Race 2 during the Euroformula Open championship
Round 4 at the Hungaroring Circuit in Hungary, Sunday, July 6.
Rayong based driver Sandy Stuvik looked set to dominate yet another weekend
of Euroformula Open racing during Round 4 of the championship, held July 5-6
at the Hungaroring Circuit outside Budapest in Hungary.
Stuvik would prove to be the fastest driver on both the Thursday and Friday
testing ahead of the race weekend, however during qualifying for Saturday’s
first race the Thai driver had his car set up too rigidly in the rear and
could only manage a P3 starting position. Teammate Artur Janosz secured the
pole position, while Spain’s Alex Paulo was P2.
Stuvik made a very good start off the grid and went for an aggressive
overtake into the first turn, but he overshot onto the runoff area and
rejoined the race in 9th position. He started fighting through the field and
saw several cars crashing out or getting penalized ahead of him. In the end
he finished the race in 4th position.
The young Thai looked to be back on the pace for Sunday morning’s
qualification for the second race, but agian it was Artur Janosz who would
claim pole position, one tenth of a second in front.
The second race start was again good for Stuvik, but he soon started
struggling and ran wide off the track in what would soon be revealed to be a
front suspension failure. Midway through the race he had to retire and the
race was eventually won by Spain’s Alex Palou, with Poland’s Artur Janosz in
second.
The weekend’s results mean that Janosz once again takes over the
championship lead with 140 points, with Stuvik sitting second on 135. The
next race will be at the British Silverstone Circuit on July 19-20 and
promises to be another exciting battle between the title contenders.

Jonathan does the double
PSC golf from Siam Country Resort

Martin Hayes & Jeff Wylie at
St. Andrews.
Tuesday, July 1, Pattavia Century -
Stableford
Jonathan Pratt (H/cap 10) got the week off to a good start at Pattavia,
playing from the white tees at about 6600 yards. The course was in generally
good condition, although the greens have had the pace taken out of them, to
cater to the vociferous whiners who found them a bit too fiery. But, having
said that, they are the same for everybody, it is just a pity that the
course’s main defense is disarmed.
Jonathan scored a solid 34 points, with 20 on the back 9, to just get the
nod over Jeff on count back, after he could only manage 18 on the back. Near
pins meanwhile were shared between Jeff & Neil.
Thursday, July 3, Pattana - Stableford
Pattana was the Thursday venue, from the white tees on the B & C
combination at nearly 6700 yards. The course was in good condition, and
under clear skies with a light breeze it made for a fine day of golf.
No-one really came to terms with the course, although there were some
patches of good golf from several of the players. Jonathan Pratt (10) was
able to maintain his form the best to sign for 33 points, putting him well
clear of Jeff Wylie (6) & Willem Lasonder (18), both on 30 points with Jeff
getting the edge on count back 14/12. Jeff got the only 2 near pins of the
day.
Thanks this week go to Martin Hayes for giving the opportunity for some of
the SCR regulars to participate in member’s day at St Andrews. It was a long
day, but we had a few laughs, got amongst the lucky draws and 1 of our crew
could have a cheap new Mizuno driver for sale shortly!
Note: Siam Country Resort, Restaurant & Bar is located just off Siam
Country Club Rd, after going under the arch past the 7/11, turn right after
50 metres, with the venue on the left another 200 metres along. Golf from
here is generally played on Tuesday & Thursday, with the resort hosting
prompt presentations on both days. As a PSC affiliated venue we welcome ALL
golfers, including ladies & seniors (>60s) who have opted for the “Silver”
tee option. Call 089 094 1841 for scheduling or enquiries. Hope to see you
there, cheers & good golfing!

Markku is best of the week
IPGC golf from The Haven

(From left) Markku Tynell, Peter Buckley and
Shuichi Kodaka.
Monday, June 30, Bangpra - Stableford
CSS 75 NC
1st Peter Buckley (20) 33pts
2nd Takeshi Hakozaki (9) 33pts
3rd Trevor Schirmer (15) 32pts
4th Kevin Blake (8) 31pts
With the wind blustering most of the week scoring was at a premium, with the
best of them being a level par round on Friday, so starting out the week at
possibly the toughest test in the area, when the greens are at their
fastest, was no easy task for the hopefuls from Soi 13.
The day’s winner, Peter Buckley, having just come in from the wintery climes
of Australia, was perhaps unaware of how difficult the course was playing in
the wind but he eventually just scraped onto the top step of the podium
after almost losing it with a couple of zeros on the last two holes.
Indeed, the closing holes both appeared to be playing into the wind at the
time as one of Peter’s playing partners, Takeshi Hakozaki, collapsed through
the back nine after a stunning start that promised to be his best round of
the year. But scoring just half of the points over the inward that he had
accumulated on the outward nine ruined his chances and so he settled for
second place.
Trevor Schirmer followed closely behind in third and Kevin Blake, on his
last outing on this visit, took fourth another shot back.
Unsurprisingly there were no 2’s on the day and precious few threes either.
Before the presentations were made there were welcome backs for Jens
Gunnarsson, Peter Buckley, and Terry Hodgkiss who had to take a rest after
suffering from a tricky ticker and returning to play very gently. There was
also a farewell for Kevin Blake returning to Brighton to a rest.
Wednesday, July 2, Khao Kheow – Stableford
CSS 71
1st Shuichi Kodaka (20) 35pts
2nd Jens Gunnarsson (16) 34pts
3rd Keith Emerson (11) 32pts
4th Terry Hodgkiss (23) 31pts
5th Trevor Schirmer (15) 31pts
Even playing Khao Kheow every Wednesday for the past couple of months does
not seem to have helped the hopefuls to get to grips with the A and B nines,
as the scores continue to be below standard for most of the players.
This day’s best was a one over handicap card returned by Shuichi Kodaka, who
was the hot favourite after his handicap went out to 20 for the first time
since arriving many years ago in Pattaya and playing under the CONGU system,
but still he could not match par on another difficult day of golf.
Jens Gunnarsson ran the winner close, losing out by a single stroke after a
great effort to close the gap on the back nine where he scored twenty
points, but a slow start proved to be the main factor as Shuichi finished
well with eighteen on the back nine.
Keith Emerson, having seen off all other challenges on other golfing days
away from The Haven, could not repeat his form and he had to be satisfied
with a third place another two behind Jens.
Terry Hodgkiss proved the old adage of “beware the injured golfer” as he
swung gently and walked a little slower to lay claim to fourth spot after
winning a count back over Trevor Schirmer with a better 15 to 14 on the
inward nine.
Once again there were no 2’s in the first division but Mike Hill cleared out
the rollover pot in the second division.
Prior to the presentations there was a welcome back for Keith Emerson.
Friday, July 4, The Emerald - Stableford
CSS 72
1st Markku Tynell (23) 36pts
2nd Mike Hill (22) 35pts
3rd Keith Emerson (11) 35pts
4th Trevor Schirmer (15) 35pts
5th Peter Buckley (20) 33pts
For the third time in the week the local rule of ‘lift and place’ was in
play and as is usual on this course it was to allow for the condition of
most of the fairways, where the crab grass has taken a serious hold. The
previous two occasions in the week were because golf carts were not allowed
on the fairways.
Markku Tynell at last appeared amongst the winners in the week, having been
an ever-present during previous weeks, with the best of the week at level
par as he returned a 19/17 split which was just good enough by a single
stroke to hold off a strong three-way challenge behind him.
Mike Hill came the closest in second place after he won a three-way count
back over Keith Emerson in third with a better 14 on the last six after they
had tied at 18 apiece for the nine. Trevor Schirmer took fourth after he
returned 17 on the back nine.
Peter Buckley rounded out the winners another two back in fifth.
Very unusually for the third time in a row there were no 2’s in the first
division but Jens Gunnarsson, just out of that group, took the second
division pool with his solo effort.
Back at The Haven there were welcome backs for Graham Davis and Russell
Gilroy the latter from a whirlwind trip to Sydney that included just a
couple of meetings, a lunch, dinner and one night in the airport hotel, then
back to reality in Pattaya.
Note. If you would like to play with The Haven group, you can contact
mobile 094 567 5726 or call in to The Haven Hotel, at 185 Soi 13, between
Beach Road and 2nd Road. All transportation to the course is arranged and
you do not need to sign up prior to the day, but you should be there by 8.15
on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday on the days that you wish to play. A
schedule of courses to be played can be found on our web site at
www.thehaven-hotel.com.

A rich man’s 4th of July
PSC golf from The Golf Club

Monthly medal winner Gabriel
Enright (center) with Phil & Mike.
Steve Ellison
Monday, June 30, Green Valley (white tees) -
Monthly Medal
1st Gabriel Enright (24) net 68
2nd Andy Makara (23) net 70
3rd Mike Newbert (9) net 71
The pages on the calendar are flying by as we staged our final round of June
in the form of our monthly medal. We gave Green Valley the nod once again as
it is by far the most popular course we play these days.

4th of July 2-man scramble
winners Ken Price & Eddie Behr celebrate with the lads at The Golf Club.
It was a good showing for a low season event as we had 16
lads turn up on the day. Many Aussies are out here at the moment as they are
escaping the cool winter months down under for the tropical summer warmth of
Pattaya. One of those lads out from Sydney just happened to have the best
round of his trip, and a 68 did the trick for Gabe Enright to capture the
June medal. Good on ya mate!
Andy Makara was on the podium again for second place and regular Mike
Newbert, the Montauk Mauler himself, took the last box on stage to take sole
third place off his 9 handicap.
Friday, July 4, Pattavia Century –
2-Man Scramble
1st Eddie Behr & Ken Price (11.2) 60.8
2nd John Hutt & David Ferris (19.5) 63.5
3rd Dan Willits & Steve Ellison (10.6) 64.4
Independence Day is a good excuse for a red, white and blue 2-man scramble,
so after a morning of free Bloody Mary’s the blood-alcohol levels were at
just the right mark to get us going to the first tee box. If you haven’t
played this format before, the team gets to choose 6 red, 6 white and 6 blue
tees to play from and there is a great deal of strategy involved. Handicaps
for the 11 teams were set at the 37.5 % of the team total, as recommended by
the PGA.
First, the technicals: Near pins went to Peter Rogers, Mike Newbert and John
Emmerson who bagged 2. Ken Price took the long drive on the 9th, which may
suggest the reason he and Eddie Behr won the event! Eddie has the Rich Man,
Poor Man in Jomtien and I would suggest you visit him on Soi 9 for some
great American food.
The crowned greens at Pattavia were treacherous today but the condition of
the course was very good and the few spots that were cored and sanded will
be great in a few weeks, so Pattavia is on our recommended list. The new
clubhouse was terrific and food and drink was reasonably priced.

Odnoral goes low to win monthly medal
PSC golf from The Outback Golf Bar

Suzi (left) presents the DeVere Monthly Medal trophy to Nick
Odnoral.
Monday, June 30, Burapha - Stableford
High cloud and a cool breeze greeted the 12 Outbackers who played the A and B
loops from the white tees, which resulted generally in some better than average
scoring and all but one player returning 30 points or more.
It is always difficult to pick the tee of the day; some prefer the blues which
are a bit long for the higher handicappers, whilst the whites tend to be a
little bit short. So generally we try to alternate the tees from one week to
another, personally I think while there is run on the course we should always
play off the blues.
Dennis Pelly struck the ball sweetly to record a great 43pts to win from Burapha
regular, Jimmy Little on 38, with Barney Clarkson taking third place on 37pts.
Dennis and Jimmy had the only ‘2’s.
1st Dennis Pelly (13) 43pts
2nd Jimmy Little (18) 38pts
3rd Barney Clarkson (25) 37pts
Tuesday, July 1, Laem Chabang - Stableford
Three groups here at Laem Chabang, where they have just started
renovations on parts of the clubhouse and changing rooms; indeed as we arrived
they were hastily putting up signs to the temporary areas, including the Pro
shop. Management and marketing were all outside directing the prospective
golfers of the day to the right areas.

Rick Evans (left), Low Gross
winner on Friday, with runner-up David Davies.
During this time of remodelling, they (Laem Chabang) have
reduced the green fee for the next three months, an opportunity not to be
missed, and in keeping with this the Outback will be switching to Laem Chabang
every Wednesday and moving the options of Bangpra or Khao Kheow to Tuesdays.
Murray Hart is on a short break between his workload and made the most of his
round today to win comfortably by four with 40pts from Andy Brady (36). Sugar
Ray played his last game before returning home for a few weeks and squeezed into
third on 35.
Today was also Nuan Keddie’s birthday so she made the most of the day and
thoroughly enjoyed herself, which culminated in a party back at the Outback that
went on quite late into the evening.
Once again, Ron Dickie and Andre Coetzee played from the blue tees, whilst
everyone else played from the regular whites.
Tony Garnett got the only ‘2’.
1st Murray Hart (14) 40pts
2nd Andy Brady (16) 36pts
3rd Sugar Ray Handford (19) 35pts
Wednesday, July 2, Bangpra - Stableford
The field of ten for our fortnightly visit to Bangpra arrived to find
a quiet course in excellent condition. The weather was also great, if a little
hot and the day look set for a good round.
All was tickity-boo until our leading 3-ball caught up with a group which was
just content to amble. At the halfway stage we asked the marshall if he could
speed them up which he duly did but they (the group) were reluctant to call our
first group through but did eventually on the par 3 twelfth. However, they
refused to call any other groups through as the rest of the field stacked up
behind, thus spoiling a few cards and hence perhaps the lower than average
scoring.
Kerry Beck did the business with a fine 37pts off his 12 handicap, with Peter
Nixon a distant second on 31 and Suzi hung in there with her 29pts to grab
third.
Kerry Beck got the only ‘2’.
1st Kerry Beck (12) 37pts
2nd Peter Nixon (10) 31pts
3rd Suzi Lawton (23) 29pts
Friday, July 4, Green Valley – Medal
Today we had a field of 32 players playing in our monthly medal,
which was kindly sponsored by Greg Hirst of the DeVere Financial Group.
The course played well with no less than 12 players recording their handicap or
better, resulting in a competition scratch rating of just 69. However there were
two exceptional scores; David Davies, playing off 23 returned a net 64, which
was awesome considering he had a ten on one hole and we felt for a long time he
would be the winner. But playing in the last group was Nick Odnoral who somehow
managed to pull out all the stops to go one better to return an amazing 63. Nick
had five birdies on the front nine, one of them being just a little tap-in to
show us how it was done.
Murray Hart took third with 68, Kev Waycott fourth with 69 and Greg Hill the
last podium place on 70. The low gross was won for the second time by Rick Evans
with 74.
Finally, welcome to the boys from Bermuda; Heinz, Mike, Alistair & Dave who are
here for a 10 day golfing holiday organised by the Outback, which they started
on Thursday at Waterside.
There were six ‘2’s, two from Nick Odnoral (5th & 8th), two from Dave Buchanan
(8th & 12th) and one each from John Lawton (8th) and Rick Evans (16th).
1st Nick Odnoral (14) net 63
2nd David Davies (23) net 64
3rd Murray Hart (14) net 68
4th Kev Waycott (9) net 69
5th Greg Hill (19) net 70
Note: The Outback Golf Bar is situated about 6km from Sukhumvit Road
along Soi Siam Country. Call Jack on 081 578 1956.

Gerd, Hunter & Patrick on top at the Mountain
PSC golf from The Growling Swan
Gerd Riedler, Mike Gosden, John Anderson &
Patrick Poussier.
Peter Blackburn
Monday, June 30, Mt. Shadow – Stableford
Well, Monday morning was here again and it was time for our first
game of the week, which was to be at the tough Mountain Shadow Golf Course.
After yet again another late withdrawal due to illness we were left with a fine
field of 28 who were up to the challenge.
As we met at The Growling Swan there were once again many welcomes to be handed
out which included Eric “Judge” Black from Geelong in Victoria, Kev Waycott
having relief from his teaching duties, Geoff Bracegirdle from Perth in Western
Australia, Richard Shutt formerly from Newcastle in New South Wales but now
living in Pattaya, Andrew Purdie from Australia and Keith “Kissy” Buchanan with
us once more.

Gerd Riedler & Bob Akapita.
When we arrived at the course things were fairly quiet and we were able to send
our first four-ball away 15 minutes ahead of schedule at 9.45am. The groups in
front were a couple of holes ahead and moving quite well so in perfect weather
conditions we proceeded and found the golf course to be in great condition with
the lush fairways and very well prepared greens. We maintained a steady pace,
getting round the front nine in just over two hours and kept it up, completing a
very enjoyable round of golf in four hours & ten minutes.
The best score on the day went to the form golfer Gerd Riedler whose 40 points
was easily good enough to secure him first place in A Division. In second place
came “Big” Bill Steinman with 35 points and your writer, Peter “Blacky”
Blackburn came third with 34 points.
In Division B it was Mike “Hunter” Gosden who was victorious with 38 points, 2
points clear of Keith “Kissy” Buchanan in second spot and Eric “Judge” Black was
third with 35 points.
Patrick Poussier continued his good form and won the C Division with 37 points,
4 points ahead of Geri Crilly in second place and Frank “Woody” Donnelly came
third with 32 points.
Division A (0-12)
1st Gerd Riedler (8) 40pts

The Growling Swan NAGA Award (awarded to the golfer who has the worst score on
the day and discreetly their score is not made public) was won by John Anderson
on a count back.
Thursday, July 3, Crystal Bay – Stableford
A late inclusion brought our total up to 24 for the game at Crystal
Bay and we assembled at the bar in readiness for the drive North up Sukhumvit.
We handed out welcomes to Tom Queen from Mandurah in Western Australia, Hugh
O’Donnell from Spain/USA, Takeshi Hakozaki from Japan & Peter Bye from “who
knows where”.
Upon arrival we found the golf course was quiet as expected and we were told
that it was to be C & A nines in that order and we could start when we ready.
Our first four-ball teed off on C1 10 minutes ahead of schedule with the sun
shining and very little breeze.
The course was in very good shape although the greens were somewhat “patchy” but
posed very few problems for most. With no-one ahead of us we proceeded at a good
pace and after stopping once or twice for cold drinks we soldiered on in the
heat and finished the complete round in four hours & fifteen minutes.
It was very tight at the top of A Division with 3 golfers scoring 38 points and
the count back resulted in the win going to the “in form” Gerd Riedler (20 point
back nine), with second place being awarded to Ebrahim (19 point back nine) and
Geoff Bracegirdle (18 point back nine) was third. With 2 golfers on 37 points
another count back was required and it saw fourth place going to your writer,
Peter “Blacky” Blackburn (19 point back nine) with Steve Truelove (17 point back
nine) just missing out.
Bob Akapita was the winner in B Division with 38 points and second place went to
Russell Calcutt who had 37. In third place was Eric “Judge” Black with 36 points
and Andrew “Turtle” Allen was fourth with 34 points.
Division A (0-15)
1st Gerd Riedler (8) 38pts
2nd Ebrahim (13) 38pts
3rd Geoff Bracegirdle (15) 38pts
4th Peter Blackburn (12) 37pts
Division B (16+)
1st Bob Akapita (16) 38pts
2nd Russell Calcutt (35) 37pts
3rd Eric Black (16) 36pts
4th Andrew Allen (32) 34pts
Near Pins: A5 – Gerd Riedler, A8 – Andrew Allen, C4 – Steve Truelove, C7 – Bob
Akapita
Long Putts: A9 – Geri Crilly, C9 – Steve Truelove
The Growling Swan NAGA Award was won by Growling Swan Mine Host Peter Grey and
he accepted the award like the good sport that he is.
Note: Growling Swan Golf welcomes golfers of any persuasion – low & high
handicappers alike, female golfers and beginners. We generally play Mondays &

Wegner wins overall in Khao Yai
PSC golf from The Billabong Golf Bar
Auke, Gerry, Phil, Sel and Pottsy in Khao
Yai.
Sunday, June 29, Bonanza G.C. -
Stableford
After a leisurely drive up to Pak Chong we booked into the hotel, put the
cheese and biscuits in the fridges then it was off to golf. It was a great
day for playing weather wise and the course was in fine condition, even
though the greens had been renovated recently and were running a little
slow.
The scores were good with Sel Wegner getting fourth place with 37 points,
just edged out by Wayne Cotterell on the same score. Second spot went to Jim
Bell with 38 points and coming in first was Lloyd Shuttleworth with a fine
score of 40. There was only one ‘2’, coming from Barry Copestake.
Monday, June 30, Khao Yai G.C. - Stableford
Khao Yai, what can you say, this course would have to be one of
the best in Thailand and Jack Nicklaus needs a pat on the back for this one.
With eight groups playing we were off to an early start and all back in the
club house in a little over four hours. It had rained like hell overnight
and was still raining a little as we left the hotel, however when we got to
the course it stopped completely and we played in great conditions.

Bill Marsden & Bob Philp.
It was a bit of a shame one group didn’t look at the colour of the tee’s on
the first and moved up to the whites for the other seventeen holes but they
took the group behind with them. Playing from the blue tees it gives
everyone a chance, and today belonged to anyone getting 40 points or more.
Fifth place overall today went to Chris Dodd on a count back over Auke and
Jim Grieve, all on 40 points. Fourth place meanwhile went to Owen Walkley
with 41, with Sel Wegner beating him on a count back on the same score. In
second place was Graham Beaumont with 42 points but coming out on top Phil
Waite with a fine 43 points.
Nearest the pins today were kindly sponsored by Mal, Fon and Zac Farquharson
to the tune of 1000 baht each - a very nice gesture and thank you from all
the players. The prizes were won by Owen Walkley, John Player, J.P Maffray
and Jeff North.
There were three ‘2’s recorded with Jeff North getting two of them and Wayne
Cotterell nabbing the other.
Tuesday, July 1, Rancho Charnvee - Stableford
Day three saw us heading to Rancho Charnvee, a favourite with all
the boys. Anyone coming to Khao Yai for a golf trip and not putting this
course on the list would be missing out on one of the best in Thailand; it
is an absolute pleasure to play.
The course was in magic condition with lightening fast greens and once again
we blessed by the weather as the rain held off.
Today was a seeded draw with the worst two day scores going out in front and
the best going last. There were nearest the pins again sponsored by Mal and
Fon, and they were taken by Ron Gale, Graham Beaumont, Gerry Roche and Mal
Farquharson, who took one of his own donations.
There were four ‘2’ on the day from Owen Walkley, Auke, Gerry Roche and once
again Mal Farquharson taking the last one.
You don’t often see any scores much above your handicap here but today was a
little different with a count back on 37 points between Phil Waite and
Pottsy for third place, with Phil just edging it. Second place went to Bob
Philp with 40 points but in first was Sel Wegner with a fine lesson in golf
for us all on 43 points, now that is a round of golf here for sure.
In the overall three day comp, Bob Philp came fifth with 106 points, fourth
went to Auke with 107, third to Jim Bell on 110, second to Phil Waite with
115, and once again the runaway winner was Sel Wegner with 121.
Wednesday, July 2, Green Valley - Stableford
As usual Green Valley was in its normal pristine condition and
with only three groups out we were away to an early start. After a very
successful trip away the field was a little depleted, four days in a row at
golf is too much for this old bag of bones, but there were a few intrepid
souls who managed to play another 18.
The scoring was very good with 36 and 37 points getting nowhere. Third place
went to J.P. Maffray with 39 points and second to Gerry Roche with 40, but
the winning score was 43 points from William Macey, well done mate.
There were three ‘2’s from Kevin Hamilton, William Macey and Wayne
Cotterell.
Friday, July 4, Plutaluang - Stableford
The course today was in great condition apart from the greens
which were full of a weed that made the ball bounce and thus difficult
putting. I think in the near future if something is not done about it, this
weed will take over and they will have to redo the greens entirely. In
saying that, we will be back as it is a great golf course.
There were quite a few good scores today, with Bill Marsden taking top spot
on 39 points and second place going to Bob Philp with 38, that was the sum
total of the prizes today.
Note: The Billabong Golf Club is situated just off Siam Country Club
Road looking straight down Lake Mabprachan. Call Bob on 082 204 3411 if you
are looking for a game.

Phillips & Howett form deadly combination
Jomtien Golf with the IPGC

Pairs winners at Burapha - Lindsay
Phillips and Rod Howett.
Monday, June 30, Khao Kheow – Stableford
Upon arrival today we were allocated the B and A nines and the cut was made at
7-19 in division 1 and 20+ in division 2. It was a very pleasant day with the
weather conditions almost perfect and the course in good condition, especially
the slick greens and this was reflected in the scores.
Now playing off 7, Andy Mills lost out to Andy Crabb on a 20/16 back-nine count
back for the top spot in the premier flight after they both came in with 34
points each. Pepo Frick meanwhile was the winner in division 2 with 35 points
and Rod Howett was one point behind him to take second.
Near pins went to Andy Mills, Lindsay Phillips (2), Roar Berger, Alan Bissell
and Andy Crabb.
Wednesday, July 2, Burapha – Stableford
Today we had a normal two division stableford competition
but also a pairs-multiplier where you paired one person’s score from division 1
(1-16) with another player’s score from division 2.
The favourite A course was closed today for major renovation and we were playing
C and D courses and standing on the first tee there are quite a few people who
could not recollect playing off this tee before.
In form lately and playing off 28, Rod Howett topped division 2 with a fine 40
points. Tom Novak came in second eight points behind Rod and Pepo Frick took
third with 31.
Neville Scourall, in his last round with us before his return to OZ, won
division 1 with 33 points and, as always, Chris Voller was in the winning line
up in second place with 32 and Martin Grimoldby was third with 31 points.
Near pins were claimed by Mike Chatt, Martin Grimoldby, Lindsay Phillips and
Jimmy Johnson.
In the pairs-multiplier event, Lindsay Phillips and Rod Howett were streets
ahead of the rest as they won with 71 points. Chris Voller and Tom Novak came in
second on 57 and Neville Scurrell and Alan Bissell took third after beating
Martin Grimoldby and Pepo Frick 30/26 on the back nine, both teams with 52
points each.
Friday, July 4,
Eastern Star – Stableford
The fairways here are still not up to scratch since the
weed-killer went down a couple of weeks ago and heavy rain is needed to bring
this course back to norm, but all in all it’s not really a big problem.
Mikael Andersson came back today to win division 1 with 35 points ahead of
Grenville Hill in on 34, the latter beating Frank Kelly 10/7 on a back-six count
back.
After being cut two shots since Wednesday’s game, Rod Howett lost out to Pepo
Frick on count back for the top spot in the second flight, both with 35 points
each, and Joe Kubon placed third with 34.
Near pins went to Karl Flood, Frank Kelly, Glenn King (2) and Iain Walsh.
Glenn King birdied the signature 13th hole for the only ‘2’ of the day.
At the presentation at Siam Cats there was a warm welcome back to Harry Vincenzi
and a bon voyage to Roar Berger and James.

Bryan Neal’s 42, best of the day
June 2014 PAGS Tournament

A & B flight winners, Steve
Murray & Bryan Neal.
The day started off with some heavy rain as a prelude to
the June PAGS tournament, held at Pattana Golf Club on Wednesday 25th. The B
& C nines was the allotted combination for the day’s field of 70 odd keen,
but apprehensive players which included 10 ladies.
The weather conditions were not the best, with the rain bucketing down just
as the first few groups were to get away. Following some heavy overnight
rain previously, the decision to have preferred lies on the closely mown
areas, to help avoid the dreaded mud ball, was a welcome one.
As with most months, there is generally a standout performer or two on the
day. This month it was hard to split Bryan Neal, Steve Murray and Jack
Grinvold for the clear star of the day title. All three got 1st placings in
their respective flights and all picked up at least 1 technical prize. The
best score of the day went to the B flight winner, Bryan Neal (15) with an
outstanding 42 points, while Steve Murray (10) led the way in the A flight
with 39 points, with Jack Grinvold scoring the coveted Low Gross of the day
with a fine 76, under the conditions.
The Ladies flight placings were hotly contested, with Orn just getting the
nod with 34 points while 2nd and 3rd required a count back to separate
Suphattra Dulkys (26) and Ning Neal (12) after both signed for 33 points;
Suphattra prevailing 18/15 on the back 9.
C flight went to Lloyd (28) with a good 38 points, just getting the better
of Donel McGuinhan (22) with 37 points, who was in turn 2 clear of Erik
Reginiussen (20) on 35.
Jari Laakkonen (17) got 2nd spot in B flight with a handy 41 points, while
Ian Hunt (17) was in the bronze medal position in this flight. As mentioned
previously, it was Steve Murray leading the way in A flight, while Mika
Viljakainen (7) did well to record 38 points for 2nd spot. 3rd place went to
Jeff Wylie (6) on 36 points and a count back was required to separate Jeff,
Jack & Olaf who had 18, 16 & 14 respectively.
It was still raining minutes before Dave and his team were setting up for
the presentation buffet, but fortunately the showers ceased and everything
flowed along smoothly. As always, the Sportsman & Shenanigans crews did a
fantastic job of keeping all the golfers and their guests satisfied. We will
all look forward to another successful tournament with this month’s event at
Green Valley on 30 July. Contact Shane on 085 945 9689 to ensure your
preferred tee time.

Cox takes a shine to Monday golf
Travellers Rest Golf Group

Fergus Brennan.
Andy Rich
Monday, June 30, Greenwood - Stableford
Many moon’s ago the Boomtown Rats sang a song that topped the
charts called “I Don’t Like Mondays”, and most people would agree, as
they have to return to work on Monday after having the weekend off.
Charlie Cox however is an exception because he obviously does like
Mondays and for two weeks running he has he has jumped out of bed at the
start of the week and proceeded to win a golf competition.
Derek
Thorogood.
On Monday at Greenwood (B and C courses) Charlie rattled off 40 points and
walked off with the first prize, leaving all the other golfers wishing they
had stayed in bed. Mind you, although Charlie made it look easy there was
quite a scrap going on behind him for second and third places. Aussies Daryl
Ottaway and Ted Senior were locking horns and both finished with a highly
respectable 37 points each and it took a count back to finally separate
them.
1st Charlie Cox (19) 40pts
2nd Daryl Ottaway (5) 37pts
3rd Ted Senior (14) 37pts
Wednesday, July 2, Burapha - Stableford
On Wednesday Fergus Brennan packed up his troubles in his old
kitbag, smiled, smiled, smiled and proceeded to show some true grit just
like John Wayne. Despite having the troubles of the world on his shoulders
of late, he cast them all off on Burapha’s B and C courses and came out on
top of the leader board and then told everybody it was the first round of
golf he had won in living memory. And as somebody once said to John Wayne in
True Grit, it was “big talk from a one eyed fat man,” but he carried it off
with his usual aplomb or should that be his Irish blarney.
Fergus was very nearly pipped for top spot by a lady, Carmen Hurdon, but she
had to settle for second place after a count back. ‘Mr Reliable’ a.k.a. Neil
Bramley had to make do with third place on this occasion.
1st Fergus Brennan (12) 35pts
2nd Carmen Hurdon (18) 35pts
3rd Neil Bramley (8) 32pts
Friday, July 4, Plutaluang - Stableford
The TRGG took another trip over to the Navy Course at Plutaluang
(West and North courses) on Friday and not wishing to be outdone by his
partner at the TRGG, Derek Thorogood thought he would get into the act and
won the day’s competition. Derek has been very consistent of late and has
cemented a regular appearance on the winner’s podium and he even managed to
beat off last week’s hero Ito Akitoshi who finished in second place.
Carmen Hurdon again had a good day again, finishing in the places but this
time in third.
1st Derek Thorogood (16) 38pts
2nd Ito Akitoshi (7) 37pts
3rd Carmen Hurdon (18) 35pts
Good luck to all you golfers for the coming week and if you would like to
play a round of golf with the TRGG, please phone Fergus Brennan on 086 056
7019 or pop into the Ned Kelly Bar in Soi Lengkee and add your name to the
weekly lists which are posted on the notice board.

Parker leads from the front
PSC golf Bunker Boys @ The Ranch

Geoff Parker enjoyed two wins
and a third place for the week.
Monday, June 30, Plutuluang N & W -
Stableford
Sixteen golfers today for our regular visit to the popular Navy course,
which is currently in great condition and the low season pricing offers
excellent value for money. We elected to play the North and West courses
which are most player’s favourites (but also decided that we must play the
South and East courses again soon) and the first group tee’d off on schedule
with no other golfers in sight ahead of them.
The weather was slightly overcast with a gentle breeze, so the conditions
were almost perfect to tackle this demanding track. The groups quickly
spread out with the leading group eventually finishing three holes and some
45 minutes ahead of the second group but everyone was back in the clubhouse
in good time, and a good day was had by all.
The scores reflected the difficulty of the course (and according to some the
slow greens), with Geoff Parker taking the top spot after scoring a modest
34 points, one point clear of Gerry Cooney who was making a late bid for the
Golfer of the Month title but came up two points short.
Following the presentation of the day’s prizes back at The Ranch, Tony
Robbins was presented with the June GoM trophy and duly rang the bell for
the thirsty golfers.
1st Geoff Parker (14) 34pts
2nd Gerry Cooney (13) 33pts
3rd Steve Durey (22) 30pts
Near Pins: Geoff Parker, Rab McDonald and Alan Sullivan(2)
Wednesday, July 2, Khao Keow B & A – Stableford
A nearly empty car park greeted us when we arrived at Khao Keow,
but unfortunately we still had a four-ball ahead of our first group as they
teed off. The weather was bright and sunny but a gentle breeze kept the
temperature at a reasonable level until later in the round when the mercury
rose considerably.
It has to be said that the course isn’t in its best condition at the moment,
and the speed of the greens were significantly different on the outward and
inward nines, but it’s still a great test of golf and good value for money.
The round was completed in a little over four hours, leaving ample time to
replenish depleted body fluids on the return journey, before the
presentation back at The Ranch.
Geoff Parker and Colin Greig were playing together and had a great tussle on
the front nine (Geoff 21 points and Colin 20 points) but unfortunately Colin
developed back problems on the back nine and dropped out of contention,
leaving the field open for Geoff to come back to the clubhouse with a
winning score of 37 points.
1st Geoff Parker (14) 37pts
2nd Dave Anon (7) 35pts
3rd Gerry Cooney (13) 32pts
Near Pins: Colin Greig, Gerry Cooney and Dave Anon (2).
Friday, July 4,
The Emerald – Medal
Given the poor condition of the course on our last visit it
wasn’t surprising that it was a smaller group of golfers that headed off to
Bang Chang for our first medal competition of the month, once again
sponsored by KPK Foods.
The weather was sunny and a fresh breeze kept the temperature at a
reasonable level, but it was evident from the first hole that there were
still extensive areas of GUR which hadn’t recovered since our previous
visit. To make things worse the greens have also recently been cored and
sanded so it has to be said that overall the course is currently in poor
condition and doesn’t represent good value for money, especially when you
can play the Navy course, a few kilometres closer to Pattaya, for 500 baht
less.
Nevertheless a good day was had by all who played, and none more so than
Andy Brady who narrowly took first prize on a count back ahead of Tony
Robbins. Third place was also decided on a count back, with Geoff Parker
narrowly edging out debutant Geoff Bracegirdle.
1st Andy Brady (17) net 73
2nd Tony Robbins (14) net 73
3rd Geoff Parker (14) net 74
Near Pins: Geoff Bracegirdle and Barry Murnin
Note: The Bunker Boys are a PSC affiliated golf society who now play
out of The Ranch bar on Pattaya 3rd Road (in front of the fire station, and
almost opposite the Buffalo Bar). We play on Mondays, Wednesdays, and
Fridays, so if you enjoy a fun day out, and a friendly but competitive golf
competition why not come and join us. We meet at The Ranch at 9 a.m. for
breakfast and transportation, and new players are always welcome. Contact
“Buff” on 086 046 5091 or 080 605 5663 for all enquiries or go to website:

Kim Jarvinen pillages the Valley
PSC golf from Lewiinski’s Golf Society

Sunday’s winner Kim Jarvinen with the
lovely Tengmo.
Sunday, June 29, Green Valley - Stableford
A Flight
1st Claude Harder (14) 35pts
2nd Colin Davis (14) 34pts
B Flight
1st Kim Jarvinen (24) 43pts
2nd Don Lehmer (18) 39pts
Near Pins: No 5 Eddy Beilby, No 8 Bruce Anderson, No 12 Lou Zig zag,
N0 16 Claude Harder
It’s inevitable in Pattaya that whenever a new golfer wins with an
outstanding score, like 43 points with no points on the first three
holes and a lost ball on the back nine, eyebrows are raised and
questions asked, but the fact is Kim has played with Lewiinski’s
before and this, to my knowledge, is the first time he has seen the
podium.
We have all enjoyed similar days at some point and have been very
happy to turn in the card of our lives. So it is congratulations to
Kim with his man of the match and AB Flight achievement. Kim was
four strokes clear of Don ‘the ladies man’ Lehmer.
Claude Harder took the top step in the senior circuit with 35
points, followed by the Donkey one stroke in arrears.
Bruce Anderson and Peter Henshaw split the 2’s pot.
Tuesday, July 1, Laem Chabang C & B – Stableford
A Flight
1st Lawrie McBride (14) 39pts
2nd Kevin Rogers (12) 37pts
3rd Nick Odnoral (14) 35pts
B Flight
1st Gabriel Enright (24) 40pts
2nd Mike Jefferys (18) 38pts
3rd Peter Henshaw (16) 38pts
A fair sized field enjoyed the low season opportunity to play Jack’s
masterpiece Laem Chabang, and the always well-conditioned course
yielded the best score to B Flight winner Gabriel ‘the thunder from
down under’ Enright who shot a sparkling 40 points.
That left two players locked with 38 points apiece; Mike ‘the Welsh
Dragon’ Jefferys and Peter ‘the silver surfer’ Henshaw. The luck of
the Irish ran out for Peter with Mike getting the nod in the count
back but Peter wasn’t too concerned as he sunk a ‘2’ on the day.
In A Flight it was Irishman Lawrie McBride who stood atop the podium
with a solid 39 points. Three Aussie stars vied for the minor places
as Kevin Rodgers lifted the silver on 37 points, leaving Nick ‘walk
abut’ Odnoral and Paul Bray in a logjam on 35 points; Nick ‘s luck
held up in the following count back as he edged Paul off the podium.
Sunday’s hero Kim Jarvinen came back down to earth as he could only
manage 17 points today.
Bruce Anderson a brace and Gabriel Enright shared the 2’s pot with
Peter
Wednesday, July 2, Treasure Hill - Stableford
A Flight
1st Tom Gorey (16) 37pts
2nd Freddy Starbeck (12) 36pts
3rd Ed Wyckoff (11) 31pts
B Flight
1st Barbara Cooper (33) 29pts
2nd John Ianson (26) 29pts
3rd Aiden Murray (20) 29pts
The ever-improving Treasure Hill hosted the third game of the week,
which saw B Flight finding the course a little tough to handle in
the heat and humidity as the scores would reflect. Three players all
returned 29 points; Barbra Cooper, John Ianson and Aiden Murray, and
chivalry was shown by John and Aiden as they stood aside to let
Barbra clinch the gold. John was then awarded the silver and Aiden
the bronze.
A Flight provided the man of the match in Co. Killkeny’s Tom Gorey
as he was the only player to better his handicap with 37 points.
Freddy ‘the quite one’ Starbeck followed Tom closely with a steady
even par return and Peter ‘the silver surfer’ Henshaw suffered his
second count back defeat in as many games as he fell victim to Ed
‘our man in the Whitehouse’ Wyckoff, both with 31 points.
Freddy Starbeck, a pair, Peter Henshaw, Colin Davis, Terry Mangan
and Ulrik Sindling shared the 2’s pot.
Friday, July 4,
Crystal Bay C & A - Stableford
A Flight
1st Greg Bates (11) 41pts
2nd Paul Bray (6) 37pts
3rd Lawrie McBride (14) 37pts
B Flight
1st Mike Jeffreys (18) 42pts
2nd Aiden Murray (20) 42pts
3rd Thomas Nyberg (17) 37pts
Following the disappointing day at Treasure Hill, B Flight bounced
back to life as it provided the co-men of the match today in Mike
‘the Welsh wizard’ Jefferys and always there or there about’s Aiden
Murray. Mike’s score was more favorably dispersed between the
outward and inner nine as he edged Aiden off the top step. Thomas
Nyberg slid quietly into the third spot while nobody was looking
with a steady 37 points.
The laurels in A Flight went to an Aussie star, the always happy
Greg Bates with a splendid 41 points. Greg was even happier as he
had the only ‘2’ of the day.
A count back was required to sort out the minor flight places and
again it was the Aussie’s who came out on top; Paul ‘walk about’
Bray’s 37 points gave him the silver and Irishman Lawrie McBride
took the bronze.
Note: Lewiinski’s is situated on Pattaya land Soi 1, Beach Rd
Soi13/13 near Walking Street. Anyone wishing to play with us just
pop in and add your name to the list or call Colin on 089 826 0764.
Transport is provided.

Not a Pleasant Valley Monday
IPGC Pattaya Golf Society
at The Elephant Bar
The Pattaya Golf Society visited Pleasant Valley on the last day of the
month, June 30, to play a stableford competition on a course which,
frankly, was not worth visiting.
All golfers when hitting straight off the tee are entitled to believe
they will play their next shot from the short stuff but at Pleasant
Valley that could only be expected on the par threes. Fairways were
uneven and worse, uncut, meaning the best drive of the day could be
lying four inches deep in rough, in the middle of the fairway.
Winning scores were David Thomas 34 points and John O’Sullivan and Larry
Slattery both on 27 points. The only birdie ‘2’ of the day was John
O’Sullivan’s chip in on the seventeenth.
Purdie and Tynell tough it out
On Wednesday, July 2, The Pattaya Golf Society travelled to
Burapha to play a stableford competition on the C and D nines. Organiser
David Thomas chewed over the options of a blue tee event but he and the
rest of the field were relieved when common sense won the day. With some
tees well back, cruel “US Open” rough and two greens in particular
needing some urgent repair it would challenge all the golfers, even off
the whites.
Results showed the wisdom of the choice as a very tight competition
followed. Sharing third place with 33 points were David Thomas, Roy
Bassett and Graham Davis whilst the joint leaders, Andrew Purdie and
Markku Tynell, recorded 34 points for the win. The victory was a boost
for Andrew Purdie as he would leave very shortly to play in the European
Amateur Tour events in Ayrshire, Scotland and the group wished him well
on links courses such as Royal Troon and Prestwick.
The bar’s beer draw was won by Evan Millar and the Booby Bevy went to
Tom McCarthy, once a regular with the group in Soi Rungland, as being
the only Haven golfer to miss out. There’s something for everyone with
PGS.
Plaiter leads the parade
On Independence Day, 4th July, an assorted group of PGS
golfers travelled to Mountain Shadow to play a stableford competition on
a course which from the first blue tee to the final green was in
splendid condition throughout.
The eclectic field saw the higher handicappers get the best of the day
with Larry Slattery and Dave Edwards sharing second place with 35 points
and Dave Plaiter top the frame with 36 points after two or three
forgettable recent rounds. Dave Thomas took the ‘2’s pot with birdie on
the fifth and the Booby Bevy went to Erik Anttonen after salvaging some
personal pride on the eighteenth hole.

Crims, husbands and candles
The Backyard Golf Society

Birthday boy ‘The Quiet
Man’, Andy ‘Deadliest Catch’ Crabb and newly-wedded ‘The Biss’ celebrate
with a staff member at the Blue Sky Bar.
After a few weeks with insufficient numbers for a
competition, The Backyard Boys returned to action at Emerald last
Friday, July 4. With our members’ propensity for the unusual,
self-destructive and unexpected, we have several items to report in
addition to the golf of course.
First up, an honourable mention must go to our first Dongtan
monkey-house player. The Diet Whiskey Man’s refusal to accept his
copious consumption of grog and the associated check-bin landed him with
a one-night stay in the clink recently, although he does claim to have
been the sole occupant in the cell and he has not picked up any new
ailments or bizarre practices from his incarceration. Apparently he
became quite loud during his short stay and the lads in brown were only
too happy to let him out at 8 a.m. shift-change.
On to the golf and winner today was Andy “The Deadliest Catch” Crabb,
his 42 points winning easily. Near-pin went to Diet Dan, although those
who did not witness the actual shot were somewhat skeptical about the
miracle. The skins were highlighted by the fact that the last 10 holes
were all drawn so a large rollover to next week. Deadliest Catch did win
6 and Foos yer Doos (pre-smash) won the other 2.
Down the road for The Quiet Man’s birthday bash and Foos yer Doos and
his better-half were rear-ended (don’t get excited Dan!!!) at the
intersection by a bloke in a car with no lights, no brakes apparently
and no license. Sensing the local custom of always blaming the farang
for a causing a crash, Foos made a judicious withdrawal to the birthday
cake and candles and left the boss to deal with the constabulary. Watch
this space next week for further updates as Foos goes after his
compensation.
Whilst sipping a few ales we were also informed that The Biss has tied
the knot again (as he himself said “she must be brave or stupid as my
other 2 wives are dead.”)
Finally, welcome back to Second-hand Bob and his cute caddy. Bob was
wonderfully attired today with a Chelsea blue band-aid below his right
knee; something he claims has improved his game no end? Maybe Torres
should wear one next season if he is still around.

Great Scott - Max wins scorefest
PSC golf from Tropical Bert’s
Derek Brook
Tuesday, July 1, Khao Kheow - Stableford
We arrived nice and early at Khao Kheow and it was soon to
down the first tee. We had been informed by the starter that the
challenge for the day would be the A & C Nines, the original test and to
me still the best. The weather was also great except for a strong wind.
Derek
Brook.
The first thing we noticed was that the ground was quite soft, it has
rained a lot of late, but not enough to make any great difference, just
enough to let the ball pick up a bit of mud now and then.
Starting on the A Nine we also noticed that the greens were a bit hairy
and slow but as we moved along the greens started to dry up and I
suspect the cutter got to a couple before we did and so some were a lot
faster. We noticed the grass mover was out so also as we went on the
fairways got that bit cleaner.
It is not long since the B Nine was totally refurbished, and it is a
pleasure to play it. On this day we sailed along, but did not rush, and
enjoyed the company. Most of the changes appear subtle, however if we
had plans of the original course I am sure we would notice the
improvements. Suffice to say we enjoyed this nine as we sailed around,
and the scribe, playing his second round for a month, enjoyed it more as
he was playing well.
Back at Bert’s we got the results and presentation underway. The winner
was your humble scribe Derek Brook with a fine 38 points, ahead of Daryl
Evans in second with 37 and that man Mashi Kaneta in third with 34.
Friday, July 4, Mt. Shadow – Rainbow Stableford
It was Friday July 4th - American Independence Day - and the
ever hopefuls turned up at Tropical Bert’s and planned for the day. The
venue was to be Mountain Shadow, and to commemorate the holiday and
inject some variety into the game, a red, white and blue ‘rainbow’ tee
rotation was set up. This proved to be interesting and popular, making
most holes somewhat different than in the past and requiring a little
more thought. Some tees presented a gift of less distance but more
strategy, while others were longer and required more consideration for
your second shot.
Mountain Shadow was in fine condition and the weather was hot and sunny.
They have been fixing up the fairways here and work continues on the
remodeling the clubhouse.
Maybe it was because the tee rotation required golfers to concentrate a
bit more, or because the course was in good condition, but during the
round quite a lot of golfers must have thought “This is my Day.”

Max Scott, Mashi Kaneta
and Tom Herrington with one of Bert’s finest.
Back at Tropical Bert’s the golfers were met with two
surprises: the first was a typical American 4th of July meal courtesy of
Bert and his staff, while the second surprise was how many good scores
had been recorded, and you had to be very good to get a mention.
When the counting was done, Max Scott (6) took a well deserved first
place with 42 points off his handicap of six! Anytime someone shoots par
golf they deserve a big congrats from we mere mortals, no matter which
tees they play from. Fireworks indeed this day from Max. Second place
went to Mashi Kaneta (13) with 40 points and the Yanks made a showing
with Tom Herrington (16) in third place with 39 that included an eagle.
Mike O’Brien (23) took fourth place over Ted Morris in fifth on count
back, each with 38 points, and more than a few golfers who had 36 and 37
points were left scratching their heads wondering what it takes to win
some days.
Near pins went to Max Scott, Tom Herrington, Kurt Ebentheller and Thomas
Johansson
