Sandy Stuvik becomes first Thai to win Formula 3 Championship

Stuvik waves to fans on his victory lap at the Monza race circuit in Italy, Sunday, Sept. 28.

Thai racing ace Sandy Kraokaew Stuvik read the legendary Monza Circuit in Italy best of his rivals in the EuroFormula Open championship last weekend, to secure a dominant pole position for the first of the two races for the 7th round of the 2014 championship.

Thai racer Sandy Stuvik celebrates in the pit lane after securing the 2014 EuroFormula Open championship title.

Lining up for the first race in front of RP Motorsport’s Andres Saravia from Uruguay in second and championship challenger Alex Palou from Spain in third, the start of the race soon became dramatic, in true Monza style, as Stuvik dropped a position in the drag race towards the first chicane, while contact between Japan’s Yu Kanamaru and Palou saw the Spaniard’s car flipped high up in the air and into retirement already on the opening lap.
Stuvik however managed to overtake Saravia on the second lap and instantly started pushing hard to open a gap and break the slipstream tow. After 4 laps the Thai racer had opened up a 3 second lead and as he was no longer under threat from slipstream overtaking along Monza’s long straights, he could focus on producing perfect laps and pulled out a 12 second lead by the checkered flag.
The brilliant win was Stuvik’s 9th victory from 13 races of the season and generated enough of a points margin for the Italian RP Motorsport Team to claim the 2014 team championship with 3 races still remaining of the season.
For Sunday morning’s second race Stuvik repeated his qualifying feat from the day before, superbly taking pole position with a time of 1:47:278, well over half a second faster that second placed Christopher Hoher from Austria and Italy’s Kevin Giovesi in third position.
The second race saw the Thai racer make a good start and garner enough space to prevent an overtaking move on him into Monza first chicane and after that point he pushed hard to open up a lead and break the slipstream. As in the first race, after 4 laps Stuvik had opened a 2 second gap, enough to break the famous Monza draft and could slowly ease away from the pursuing Formula 3 cars.
Although Stuvik would have a solitary race alone at the front, behind him there was plenty of action, as earlier championship rival Palou was again involved in contacts with other cars and would finish without any points. Stuvik’s RP Motorsport teammate Artur Janosz from Poland had a race long fight with Italian Kevin Giovesi, but would in the end secure 2nd place, in front of Austria’s Hoher.
With his second victory at Monza, Stuvik’s 6th race win in a row, he easily secured the 2014 EuroFormula Championship title, even with one round in Barcelona left on the calendar.
Stuvik now carries 293 points, with Janosz in second place on 216 points and Palou on 197, as the championship moves to Barcelona for the final round during on 1st to 2nd November, 2014.
Sandy Stuvik races for the Royal Automobile Association of Thailand and is sponsored by The Pizza Company, Singha Corporation and Dacon Inspection Services and Sports Authority of Thailand.

Sailors join hands for charity at Bart’s Bash

Sailors attend the pre-race briefing for Bart’s Bash on Sunday, Sept. 21 at Royal Varuna Yacht Club.

The Royal Varuna Yacht Club in Pattaya and Ocean Marina Yacht Club members came out in force to support the Bart’s Bash race on Sunday 21st September, a Guinness World Record attempt for the largest sailing event hosted by over 750 yacht clubs worldwide on the same day.
Though this was a record breaking day, most came to support the Andrew Simpson Foundation and local Thai children’s charities with some sailors brushing off the cobwebs from their racing machines after being dormant for a period of time.
Some great racing happened the day before with a pursuit race and a junior team racing competition, finishing with a party at the famous Royal Varuna Beach Bar on Saturday evening.

Junior sailors all smiles after Saturday’s team racing.

Sunday dawned with a few hangovers but with 65 boats getting ready for the Bart’s Bash Race itself. After the briefing and team photos, the race team set a square course in the little wind there was. After a delay to the proceedings to get all the boats launched and out to the start area, the race team went into a start sequence. However the wind was desperately light and the tide was pushing everyone over the line. The inevitable happened and a general recall was signaled.
By this time the wind, which had been from the north-west, was starting to die and swing left. A further attempt was made at a start, but with so many boats over the line and a 90 degree hard shift left in the wind, a second recall ensued. The race team reset the start and course to where they guessed the wind would steady, and luckily it wasn’t a bad guess and the third start saw the fleet get away with only an individual recall for two boats which did return to start correctly.
The breeze had also filled in to give some good sailing for all. After the first lap, the top contenders were showing. Alex Skaria’s F20 was the first through the gate and was obviously benefiting from the conditions. He was chased across the line and all round the course by Pom Green and Pong in their F17.
The most impressive first lap was by Sophie and David Tulloch who were 9th over the line but after the first lap in their RS400 they were ahead of the majority of F18’s and other catamarans! Amongst the single-handed dinghies it was Charlie Zbinden who had made the best start and led the Laser fleet, with Morten Jacobsen in his OK just behind.
Apart from the front runners, this race was also about getting everyone on the water and sailing together. As such there was a high range of abilities and experience from several people in their first major race right up to sailors who compete in World Championships.

Sailing stars of tomorrow showed off their boat handling skills.

It was also great to see the participation of all of the junior sailors. They took a break from their RS QuBa Team Racing and joined together on various boats from QuBa’s through RS Visions right up to Hobie 16’s. One of the greatest sights was seeing 6 junior Optimist sailors in an RS Vision together - they probably still didn’t make up a higher crew weight than two adults!
Apart from experience there were sailors from 6 years old up to over (maybe significantly over!) 70 years old, all competing in the same race. The youngest competitor was also in an RS Vision with his parents, and they were actually the first RS Vision to finish.

Boats of all shapes and sizes manned by crews spanning many generations attended the world record attempt.

After 40 minutes the race team raised the ‘U’ flag to indicate boats would then be finishing when passing through the gate. Overall local results were calculated based on average lap times and the club handicap. Alex in the F20 took the win very closely followed by Sophie and David in their RS400. Pom Green and Pong then followed in the F17.
Further down the fleet, top single-handed dinghy was Morten in 7th who had overtaken Charlie. However Charlie was still the first Laser at 12th overall.
After all the excitement of the race, the sailors headed ashore for a beach barbecue. They were also joined by 12 keelboats and large multihulls who had started their race at Ocean Marina and had finished at Varuna. It was great to see them come up to support the weekend. The big boats then anchored up off the club to come ashore for the celebrations. The sight with all the dinghies on the water together with the big boats was fantastic. However the juniors were not allowed time off to recover - they had to finish the finals for the RS QuBa team racing which was also held directly off the beach for all to enjoy.

Multihulls line up for the pursuit race.

Overall the weekend and special race was an amazing tribute to Andrew (Bart) Simpson and 70,000 baht (£1350) was raised with the money split evenly between the Andrew Simpson Foundation and local Thai charities. It also showcased sailing as a great, inclusive sport for all ages and abilities!

Freeman tames treacherous Pattavia greens

PSC Golf Bunker Boys @ The Ranch

Alan Freeman made a successful return to Pattaya.

Monday, Sept. 22, Mountain Shadow – Stableford
Twelve golfers today for our visit to Mountain Shadow, and we set off up the 7 motorway on a bright sunny morning. We teed off at our leisure and although there was another local society ahead of us, they were far enough ahead that our leading group never caught up with them throughout the round.
We welcomed back Alan Freeman who was playing on his birthday and celebrated by taking third place and two near pin prizes. It’s usually the lower handicappers who are successful on this testing course and today was no exception with Colin Greig continuing his run of good form to come in first place ahead of John Graham.
Several players commented that the course is beginning to appear a little bit scruffy, and although the recent renovations to the changing rooms are very welcome, it’s to be hoped that it’s not going to be to the detriment of the course, which is one of our most popular venues.
1st Colin Greig (7) 36pts
2nd John Graham (11) 34pts
3rd Alan Freeman (4) 33pts
Near Pins: Colin Greig, Tore Eliassen, and Alan Freeman (2).
Wednesday, Sept. 24, Greenwood B & C – Medal
It was another bright morning as our golfers teed off for a medal competition at the popular Greenwood course. The course was quiet and in good condition, but the fairways were still damp and heavy from recent downpours.
The round went smoothly for the outward nine, but the clouds were starting to build as we set off on the inward nine, and as the leading group played the 15th hole the heavens opened and a violent thunder storm interrupted the round. After waiting in the shelter for 45 minutes the course was completely flooded and we were reluctantly forced to abandon the competition.
The journey back to the clubhouse was tricky with the cart paths flooded almost too deep for a buggy to pass through, and everyone was relieved to finally get back to the clubhouse with the rain still pouring.
This was the third time we’ve had to abandon a competition this year, which is just about the average for a complete year’s golf in tropical Thailand.
Friday, Sept. 26, Pattavia – Stableford
When we arrived at the club house it was evident that the course was busy and we soon discovered that two or three other local societies were on the course ahead of us, which is testament to the new found popularity of this vastly improved venue and the good value for money it offers.
We teed off a few minutes later than scheduled and the round was soon interrupted by another heavy storm as the leading group played the third hole. Fortunately the rain ceased after 30 minutes and we were able to complete the round in increasingly pleasant conditions with the course drying out rapidly.
The outward nine had taken almost three hours to complete but the pace of play picked up on the inward nine and we were able to complete the round in reasonable time.
The greens here are notoriously difficult, although today they were not running too fast, but still anyone hoping for a good score had to be on their best putting form. Alan Freeman was the only player to play to his handicap on the day taking first place ahead of Peter Habgood and Geoff Hart who were all playing in the same group.
1st Alan Freeman (4) 36pts
2nd Peter Habgood (19) 32pts
3rd Geoff Hart (24) 30pts
Near Pins: Alan Freeman and Geoff Parker.
Note: The Bunker Boys are a PSC affiliated golf society who now play out of The Ranch bar on Pattaya 3rd Road (in front of the fire station, and almost opposite the Buffalo Bar). We play on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, so if you enjoy a fun day out, and a friendly but competitive golf competition why not come and join us.
We meet at The Ranch at 9 a.m. for breakfast and transportation, and new players are always welcome. Contact “Buff” on 086 046 5091 or 080 605 5663 for all enquiries or go to website: www. bunkersociety.com.

Our wonderland for golf

PSC Golf from The Golf Club

Greg, Phil & Stan after Friday’s golf.

Steve Ellison
Monday, Sept. 22, Green Valley (white tees) – Stableford
1st Terry Dyer (15) 40pts
T2nd Sandy Bennie (18) 35pts
T2nd Kim Scadden (18) 35pts
The Boomtown Rats wouldn’t be singing “I don’t like Mondays” if they had been playing Green Valley lately. We really do like Mondays for the last who knows how long as the course continues to be the most played and in the best condition of just about anywhere. If only Sir Bob took to the links to join us here at TGC!
Weather: perfect, Course: perfect, Scores: well, 2 out of 3 ain’t bad! Terry Dyer from Kiwiland was the only bloke to beat his handicap and his 40 points was 4 better than his score here last week to climb to the top of the pile for 1st place. Well done mate!
Wednesday, Sept. 24, Pattavia Century (white tees) – Stableford
1st Steve Ellison (18) 36pts
2nd Terry Dyer (15) 34pts
3rd Phil Smedley (10) 32pts
The weather was looking a bit dicey on the drive out today. Blustery, dark clouds were swirling all around but the attention was drawn to the near perfect road to the course as more of it has gotten paved lately. Those axle busting potholes are a thing of the past now.

All in a day’s work, Phil bagged his 1st ‘Ace’ last week.

Shane and the lads at the P.A.G.S. comp were also out there today and it was nice to see so many familiar faces out at this lovely golf course. Shane runs an excellent tournament and he had a full card of golfers for this very popular monthly event.
We had 3 groups out today and were full of anticipation to see how Pattavia has improved since we were here last, just 3 weeks ago. Aside from some sort of disease on the back of the 18th green, the golf course was in good nick and those greens are becoming the stuff of legend here in Pattaya golf circles. On some positions on the green, a downhill putt can become unstoppable and a 4-putt is not out of the question. The many crowned greens can hide a tremendous break, so pace and angle combine to make this the most challenging test of putting in Pattaya. This is also the best value for money course in Pattaya at the moment.
The day was purring along nicely and aside from a slight wait at the turn, we had no hold ups other than the usual 4th par-3. Having the welcoming drinks stop there silenced any thoughts of complaints. The back nine saw us make the turn just under the 2-hour mark.
All was going to plan when at the 16th the wind started to pick up quickly and those charcoal clouds we witnessed on the way in had now become of Biblical intensity looming over the 17th tee box. It all became a game of balance as a 30 mph wind made stance a test and we rushed to get to the clubhouse before the inevitable downpour. As we finished the 18th, put the clubs in the van and just got to the clubhouse, those clouds opened up right on cue.
Looking back at the results sheet, this writer found his 36 points were enough to snag first place from some of the real golfers out there. After making a few good chips followed by a few good putts, it ended up being the best round in a few years. Like they say, every dog has his day!
Friday, Sept. 26, Khao Kheow (white tees) – Stableford
1st Phil Smedley (10) 36pts
2nd Greg Gawron (17) 34pts
3rd Stan Buchan (0) 32pts
Khao Kheow is in the best shape it has been in a long time. Everyone raved about the course and we will definitely be going out there more over the high season. The layout by Pete Dye has always been great, but sometimes keeping the rough down in the rainy season gets to be difficult. That is not a problem now.
Today was Cap’t. Phil’s last round before he heads off to the homeland for a well deserved break before high season. It must have been on the agenda to go out with a bang and so it was he took first by shooting his handicap and the win by a comfortable 2 strokes.
Fellow Aussies Greg Gawron and Stan Buchan were just behind for 2nd and 3rd slots to complete the Antipodean Podium.

Olafsson wins by a mile

PSC golf from Cafe Kronborg

Oddur Olafsson & Kenny Chung.

Monday, Sept. 22, Khao Kheow B&C - Stableford
1st Oddur Olafsson (13) 41 Points
2nd Dave Richardson (27) 30 Points
3rd Jan Lovgreen (16) 29 Points
The game today was Khao Kheow up Route 7 in 44 minutes, but over an hour on the return trip. The course was deserted when we arrived so we were off B1 35 minutes early under overcast skies and steamy hot conditions with a short shower on B4 and 5. The course was in fine dry condition with fast greens.
Back in the clubhouse after a round of 3 hours and 40 minutes it was determined that Oddur Olafsson was the winner by a mile with 41 points. Dave Richardson came second with a measly 30 points and Jan Lovgreen third on a countback from Mike Winfield, both 29 points.
Thursday, Sept. 25, Pattaya C.C. - Stableford
1st Kenny Chung (25) 41pts
2nd Karl Beter (31) 37pts
3rd Jan Lovgreen (16) 34pts
4th Oddur Olafsson (13) 34pts
Pattaya Country Club was the game today departing under rainy conditions and arriving 22 minutes later with no rain and overcast skies. We bought the vouchers and were off the first tee 45 minutes early under overcast and steamy conditions with a brief shower on the 13th and 14th holes.
The course was in good shape, progressing to a better condition every month over the last few months. It was indicated that the green fee for October will be THB 600 with the new clubhouse opening by the end of the year.
Back in the clubhouse after a round of 3 hours and 45 minutes the winner was declared to be Kenny Chung with a fine 41 points. Karl Beter came second on 37 and Jan Lovgreen took third on a count back from Oddur Olafsson, both with 34.

Mike & Noi lead the way at PAGS monthly

September 2014 PAGS Tournament from Pattavia

Dave Bowers tees off.

Another day dawned and golfers assembled en masse at the renovated Pattavia for the September PAGS tournament.
The day’s field of 92 players, which included 14 ladies, had an eye on the weather conditions as it was raining in some parts of Pattaya early and the forecast was for a storm later in the day. Following some recent rain, and some patchy fairways, the decision was made to have preferred lies on the closely mown areas, to help avoid the dreaded mud ball. The storm hit late in the day, which vindicated the implementation of this allowance, ensuring fairness for all players across the day.
Mile Allidi shot the undoubted round of the day, winning the Low Gross with a fine 71, that’s 1 under for the mathematically challenged. He also picked up second spot in the A Flight net category, along with a bonus technical prize.

Noi Emmerson was the ladies winner.

Another headlining score of the day went to the Ladies winner, Noi Emmerson (18) with a fine 40 points to go with the maximum of 2 technical prizes, putting her new car to use and taking all the prizes home. The Ladies minor placing went to Ning Neal (11) with a steady 36 points, while the ladies in general dominated the technical prizes, winning 7 of the open prizes available.
The best score of the day, unusually, was in the A flight, with John Pierrel (11) signing for a strong 41 points, ahead of Mike Allidi, while Pelle Petterson (10) picked up third spot with 38 points to go with his technical prize.
B flight was a tightly contested affair with Karl Flood (15) on 37 points edging Tom Thompson (14) on count back on the last 3 holes, 8/7. The bronze medal position in this flight went to Kissy (14) with a creditable 36 points, 22 on the back 9 to edge Ken Price & Chris Willmott with 19 & 15 respectively on the back 9.
In the C flight it was our favorite BBQ King, Dave Bowers (23) getting the chocolates with a solid 38 points, while Reijo Heiskanen (20) was 4 points behind on 34, with Stefan Lord (18) a further point behind in third spot.
This month I will throw out a few honourable mentions, to Kevin Mackintosh, Duang and Leif Pettersson, who each picked up the maximum 2 technical prizes, well done to all.
The Annual Order of Merit race is starting to really take some shape, with less than 20 points covering the top 3 of Leo Ruuskanen, Mike Allidi & Jeff Wylie. There are plenty of players knocking on the door as the year draws to a close and with 3 rounds left it is still anybody’s to win.
Dave and his team once again did a tip top job in the tucker department, with plenty of non golfers coming along to enjoy the social atmosphere of the evening with their golfing partners, family & friends. As always, there is only 1 person to blame if you go home hungry from Shenanigans Jomtien after a PAGS presentation.
We look forward to next month’s event at Emerald on 29 October, as I am sure all who have experienced the PAGS organisation and hospitality do. Contact Shane on 0859459689 to ensure your preferred tee time.

Lamond’s farewell flourish

IPGC Pattaya Golf Society at the Elephant Bar

Rob Lamond flanked by Jesper Hansen, Andrew Purdie and Tony “Tiny” Campbell.

The Pattaya Golf Society gave itself a treat on Monday, 22nd September when the group visited Laem Chabang for the first time in seven years to play a stableford competition on the C and A nines. Needless to say the course was in excellent condition with well grassed fairways and very consistent greens, which certainly ranked amongst the best there are currently in the province.
A clear fine day lay ahead as the group teed off on time. Beginning on C the round had the toughest of starts imaginable with the first four long holes, punctuated by water and lateral bunkers giving their share of problems and for many in the field getting through the front nine reasonably unscathed proved the priority. Those who did were set up for some good scores thereafter.
In fourth place was Tony Campbell with a strong 34 points, only a couple behind the joint runners up Andrew Purdie and Jesper Hansen, on 36. The winner with a one-under the card back nine was Rob Lamond, celebrating his final round this trip in style with forty points, which is the best winning score the group has ever achieved at the course. His gross 77 was testimony to his ball striking and was a thoroughly deserved reward for the Aussie golfer.
There were no birdie ‘2’s and the non-winner’s beer went to Ron Matthews whilst Kevin Pross took the Booby Bevy for presuming that because he missed a tree trunk on his backswing, he would also miss it on the downswing! Silly boy! However Laem Chabang was all about quality and that will be the lasting memory of the day.
Bolger heads up Bangpra
The Pattaya Golf Society followed up its visit to Laem Chabang two days previously with a call at Bangpra on Wednesday, 24th September, to play a stableford competition on the finely prepared course. Bangpra has always been a favourite of the PGS and seeing it in all its splendour with deliciously testing greens is what golf is all about here on the Eastern Seaboard.
The large group got underway well before time and the excess humidity caused problems with club selection and scores were destined to be on the low side. Charlie Landrebe, Bryan Brown and Mr Len all shared third place with 30 points, only one behind Wichai Tananusorn’s hard earned second place finish. The winner with 34 points was Gary Bolger who continues to play with length and accuracy and his score ranks with others of such merit recently.
There were no birdie ‘2’s and Willie Barbour, after a better day of late, enjoyed the hosts’ non-winner’s beer. The Booby Bevy went to Jon Batty for his hero-to-zero performance after a round he will hopefully forget before next playing with the group as his other performances recently have been very creditable.
Bangpra continues to be a quality course which offers all the challenges golfers enjoy.
Murray’s mojo’s working
The Pattaya Golf Society played its monthly medal competition at Pattavia on Friday, 26th September under brooding skies which soon evacuated their contents and for an hour or so the course, and golfers, got quite a soaking. However the members of PGS are made of stern stuff and the threat of saturation was nothing compared with the threat of the Booby Bevy for abandoning!
Scoring became a problem on the well prepared course as greens became slower and fairways lost their run but some individual golfers excelled in their efforts. Wichai Tananusorn gave a steady display in recording net 74. His playing partner was the club champion Chris Smith and rumours of a gross 34 on the front nine proved to be true as expectations mounted for a special round from Chris but the weather took its toll and he finished with net 74, also to share second place.
The winner was Murray Edwards, all focus and good humour and the blend of steady driving and solid accurate approach shots gave him the opportunity to perform well. He grabbed it and recorded a laudable net 73 for the win.
There was only one birdie ‘2’ and Tony Campbell took a healthy bonus for the effort on the fourth hole. Jon Batty enjoyed the bar’s non-winner’s beer and Mr Len took the Booby Bevy. The accolades were saved for the hero of the day however as Murray Edwards took his first Monthly Medal win in a long time in his stride.

Jordison stars at Laem Chabang

PSC Golf from the Outback Golf Bar

Brad Jordison, Geoff Stimpson & Bruce McAdam.

Monday, Sept. 22, Burapha - Stableford
1st Bob Finley (14) 41pts
2nd Tony McDonough (15) 41pts
3rd Ken Young (26) 38pts
4th Geoff Stimpson (07) 36pts
5th Brad Jordison (05) 36pts
The eighteen Outbackers at Burapha this week stayed on the slightly preferred A & B nines, once again from the white tees.
Two very fine scores of 41 points apiece came in from Bob Finley and Tony McDonough, who were split on count back with Bob getting the nod for first place. They were both three clear of Ken Young in third followed home by two in form players, Geoff Stimpson and Brad Jordison both on 36.
The course was reported to be in excellent condition and there were three ‘2’s from Jim Brackett & Dennis Pelly on B3 and Bob Finley on B8.
Tuesday, Sept. 23, Bangpra -
Stableford
1st Rick Forrest (22) 30pts
2nd Peter Nixon (12) 30pts
3rd Geoff Stimpson (07) 30pts
4th Sugar Ray Handford (18) 30pts
Welcome back to Aussie visitors John Mills, Paul Kruining, Bob Cannon and Rick Forrest who together with another Aussie visitor, Ray Cody, made up almost half the field of 12 players at the tough Bangpra course. Just how tough can be seen by the scoring, with the best being 30 points as no less than four players returned that score. On count back Rick Forrest won from Peter Nixon, Geoff Stimpson and Sugar Ray.
There were no ‘2’s.
Wednesday, Sept. 24, Laem Chabang - Stableford
1st Brad Jordison (06) 38pts
2nd Mike Missler (06) 35pts
3rd John Mills (20) 34pts
There were 11 playing today at Laem Chabang off the white tees in overcast conditions. It was seemingly perfect weather for golf but no - the humidity was a killer and for most of us our golf umbrellas were required to help us when the sun came out.
Unfortunately, we had to start off C again which seems unfair and is not how the course was designed as many will be aware, the four first holes are very tough and as you haven’t warmed up properly, can often destroy one’s round. The problem has been created by the floodlit B course which always has to be the back nine but A & C is always possible.
Brad Jordison was first today with 38 points and will see his handicap come back to 5. Mike took second with 35 points and visitor John Mills was third on 34.
We only have three more games left playing at this fantastic course in the low season so if you fancy taking on the course then please play before the time runs out as I doubt that we will be playing here in the high season.
There were three ‘2’s from Howard Marson, Brad Jordison and Mike Missler.
Friday, Sept. 26, Green Valley - Stableford
Div A (0–14)
1st Geoff Stimpson (07) 40pts
2nd Peter LeNoury (10) 37pts
3rd Bob Finley (14) 34pts
Div B (15–18)
1st Keith Allen (17) 38pts
2nd John Stafford (16) 35pts
3rd John O’Keefe (17) 33pts
Div C (19+)
1st Suzi Lawton (26) 42pts
2nd Rick Forrest (22) 34pts
3rd Bruce McAdam (26) 33pts
We had a good turn out today with 32 Outbackers playing back on Green Valley. The course was wet underfoot from overnight rain and we employed ‘lift clean and place’ through the green - the balls were often muddy and I think that it was the correct shout for the day.
Geoff Stimpson continued to shine as he recorded another good score, this time 40 points to win Div A and probably ensure a new handicap of 6 for him. He beat course specialists, Peter LeNoury (37) and Bob Finley (34).
Div B went to Keith Allen on 38 points, who has clearly recovered from his wrist injury last month in Hua Hin. Second was John Stafford (35) and third John O’Keefe (33).
Top scorer for the day was Suzi Lawton with 42 points to win Div C. Eight shots back was Rick Forrest in second and Bruce McAdam one further back in third.
There were three ‘2’s from Usman Janjua & Peter LeNoury (8th) and Suzi Lawton (12th).
Note: The Outback Golf Bar is situated about 6km from Sukhumvit Road along Soi Siam Country. Call Jack on 081 578 1956.

Sports Bag: Golf membership information

Sports Editor;
This year Eastern Star golf club has increased its annual member’s green fees by 50% to 18,000 baht and demanded payment in full up front. Before you had the option to play and pay each round which was great for people that only visit Thailand for short periods. As a result a lot of members decided not to pay and just use the course as a visitor because they are not in Thailand all year round. If those members want to sell their membership, Eastern Star is insisting that the purchaser/seller will still have to pay the full years green fee of 18,000 baht regardless.
If the transfer takes place even on the 31st of December this year they still have to pay for the full year, before Eastern Star will process it. Next year it will be 36,000 baht and so on, assuming they don’t increase the fees.
The point being is that non paying members will lose all the transfer value of their membership over the next few years if they don’t sell it and will be heavily penalised if they do. So if you would be kind enough to print this it may help some members to realise what is going on and try to sell their membership while they can.

Girl power on show in lawn bowls final

Pairs champions and finalists pose with their trophies.

The Pattaya based Coco Club held its lawn bowls pairs tournament finals weekend of September 20-21. Two divisions were created for all teams to play at least 5 qualifying games to decide who would proceed to the finals.
In Division A it was Bangkok’s Buzz and Go who were flying with 5 wins from 5 games, including wins over probably four of the top six lady bowlers in Thailand - Lek and Thanom 20-4 and Thong and Yupa 14-8. Division B was closer with Coco’s Sue off to a flyer of 4 from 4 until meeting Num for a 14-8 defeat and Frank and Bank coming good after slow starts.
The semi-finals drew Buzz and Lek again but this time it was a real game with Lek gaining her revenge and Thong overcoming Sue to set up an all girls final. But after their very slow start it was Lek and Thanom - the current ladies 1 and 2 in Thailand - who overcame previous champions Thong and Yupa to show all the boys the way home.
The weekend’s bowls was followed by a buffet and super sing song – most probably helped by the 20,000 baht prize money.

Don Carmody sparkles at Emerald

PSC Golf from Tropical Bert’s

Tuesday’s winners pose with Pu.

Derek Brook
Tuesday, Sept. 23, Pleasant Valley - Stableford
We had not been to this course for a long time, and with the rain of late we were more than a little worried as we know the course does not seem to drain well. Indeed in the early days one of our players always referred to it as ‘Pleasant Swamp’. But it has improved since.
The worry for the day was should we use ‘lift, clean and place’, however after the course starter said we could drive carts on the fairway, normal rules of golf were employed. So on a course that seemed nearly empty, off we went a little early.
The layout was wet and the ball did pick up mud at times but such is golf. The rough was soaking wet and if you got in it, getting out could be a problem and I came back with a wrist that was not good. Still, all in all it was not a bad walk around and the only other area of concern was the greens, they tended to be very slow and most of the golfers struggled on them.
Round over it was into the showers and at this course they are very good, then into the restaurant for a bite before we were on the road back.
Back at Bert’s a bit early we could relax before the results were declared. The winner on the day was John Anderson with a fine 40 point in the heavy going. We then had a count back on 37 points that saw Dick Warberg in second, Steve Hamstad in third and Alan Sullivan fourth.
Near pins went to Walter Baechli, Landis Brooks and Derek Brook.
002 All the winners with Pu, definitely Bert’s finest.
Friday, Sept. 26, The Emerald - Stableford
It was Friday, and that means the Tropical Bert’s golf groupies were gathering for breakfast and planning the day’s golf. Today was a little special as the group headed out to Emerald and the group hadn’t played there in quite a while and everyone was looking forward to visiting this difficult but very interesting layout.
We are happy to report that Emerald is in excellent condition. There are some soggy spots due to the recent rains but not so bad. This rolling Faldo design requires luck or skill in finding flat areas of the fairway, and the par threes always give the jitters.
The weather on this day was very humid but cloud cover kept it tolerable, and a late afternoon breeze cooled things down. Fortunately we were spared any rain delays.
Emerald usually plays tough, but on this day a few got tougher. The winner by an impressive four shots was Don Carmody (Hcp 28) with a score of 42 points. Excellent golf Don! Second place went to Maurice Roberts (12) with an impressive 38 points. Bob Watson (4) is often on the winner’s list and was again this day taking third with 37 points. Colorful Walter Baechli (18) took fourth with 35.
Near pins were claimed by DickWarberg, Landis Brooks, Mark West and John Harrison.

Murray storms to victory

Travellers Rest Golf Group

Alan Murray - winner at Pattavia.

Andy Rich
With the Ryder Cup at Gleneagles occupying most of last weekend, the TRGG arranged all of their golf trips to finish well before the big one got started. Unfortunately Donner und Blitzen decided to intervene. I am not talking about two of Santa’s reindeers I am talking about thunder and lightning of a different kind.
We were halfway round Pattavia Century on Friday when we were interrupted by some pretty severe weather. The ground shook and the heavens opened and swinging a metal seven iron in the middle of an open field suddenly didn’t seem such a very good idea. So we all headed for shelter and coffee and biscuits or a beer depending on one’s preferences. An hour or so later we were back underway but as a result missed the opening six or seven holes of the Ryder Cup.
Monday, Sept. 22, Plutaluang - Stableford
The week had started in a more benign fashion on Monday with a trip over to the Navy Course at Plutaluang (East and West courses). A good turnout enjoyed their day’s golf, none more so than Howard Marson who rattled up 39 points to take the honours.
Jim Cleaver, freshly returned from his lengthy trip back to Blighty to check that his chain of restaurants were still raking in enough money to keep him out of the kitchen and on the golf course, took second place.
The only lady in the field Tewin Poopay Lamthong also managed to escape the kitchen for at least one day and took third place, only just losing out in the battle of the chefs on count back.
1st Howard Marson (20) 39pts
2nd Jim Cleaver (8) 36pts
3rd Tewin Poopay Lamthong (13) 36pts
Wednesday, Sept. 24, Treasure Hill - Stableford
It was off to Treasure Hill on Wednesday and it was that old prospector Fergus Brennan who struck gold. On a course most golfers find extremely difficult Fergus picked his way around, collecting gold nuggets along the way and finishing a very rich man. His 37 points was far too good for all the rest and it was only Ito Akitoshi on 34 who finished anywhere near him. Jim Cooper in third place was a long way back.
1st Fergus Brennan (13) 37pts
2nd Ito Akitoshi (8) 34pts
3rd Jim Cooper (15) 30pts
Friday, Sept. 26, Pattavia - Stableford
Back to where I started on Friday and the Ryder Cup. Perhaps we should have arranged a Europe versus the USA competition as well as the usual Stableford but only two Americans turned up so it would have been a little one sided. Not unlike the outcome in the real event.
It was a Scotsman Alan Murray who won our competition, which was not too surprising as he is probably used to playing in bad weather. Mike Smith made it into second place and another Scotsman Jim Cooper finished third.
1st Alan Murray (14) 38pts
2nd Mike Smith (6) 35pts
3rd Jim Cooper (16) 30pts
Good luck to all you golfers for the coming week and if you would like to play a round of golf with the TRGG, please phone Fergus Brennan on 0860567019 or pop into the Ned Kelly Bar in Soi Lengkee and add your name to the weekly lists which are posted on the notice board.

Bissell blitz at Green Valley

Jomtien Golf with the IPGC

Monday, Sept. 22, Green Valley - Stableford
There were six groups out today and as always we alternated the first tee and we were over the water today.
The best returned score was 40 points in division 2 from Alan Bissell while Chris Reed was second some six points behind and Chris Slota took third on 32.
Jeff Cargill won division 1 with 38 points, one ahead of Wilf Latham in second and Chris Voller finished third with 36.
Near pins went to Wilf Latham, Chris Voller (2), Sid Ottaway and Chris Reed (2).
There were no ‘2’s today.
Wednesday, Sept. 24,
Khao Kheow - Stableford
A smaller field than normal out today and with 34 points Chris Reed won division 1 ahead of Chris Slota in second on 33. We were playing the B and C courses and with just 27 points Alan Bissell topped division 2 standings while Willy van Heetvelde placed second one point behind.
Once again there were no ‘2’s recorded.
Friday, Sept. 26, Eastern Star - Stableford
We approached Eastern Star today in a slight drizzle and our tee-off was delayed 45 minutes while we waited for the rain to cease. When we did get underway we found the 9th fairway to be saturated so we employed the ‘pick, clean and place’ ruling. As it transpired most of the holes were fine and relief wasn’t really required.
Frank Kelly came in with 36 points to finish 5th in division 1 while Karl Flood was fourth with 37, losing on count back, so there were not in the reckoning today. Bill Bertram won the division with 38 points and Alan Hansen beat Chris Voller 14/12 on the back six holes for second after they both scored 19 each on the back nine and 37 overall.
Chris Slota topped division 2 with 36 points ahead of Glyn Evans in second with 35 and Darryl Blair third on 34.
Near pins went to Alan Hansen, Harry Vincenzi, Chris Voller, Glyn Evans and Chris Slota.
Wilf Latham birdied the 13th and Harry Vincenzi the 3rd to split the ‘2’s pot in division 1 while another rollover ensued in division 2.
We said bon voyage today to Bob Poole, Chris Reed and Harry Vincenzi.

Bruce Hilde dances to the top

IPGC golf from The Haven

Bruce Hilde, Mathew Badman & Trevor Schirmer.

Monday, Sept. 22, Greenwood B & C - Stableford
CSS 71
1st Mathew Badman (11) 37pts
2nd Allen Raaen (8) 36pts
3rd Kevin Blake (8) 36pts
4th Phil Groves (10) 34pts
5th John Carlin (18) 33pts
The once a fortnight competitions at Greenwood are proving to be very popular as the course is always in excellent condition and usually not very busy, even though at 500 baht the green fee is one of the cheapest amongst the Eastern Seaboard courses. Presumably the distance form Pattaya at almost fifty kilometers is something of a deterrent.
This day was no exception as the course was almost deserted and the rounds progressed at a very pleasant rate and with very good scoring across the field the CSS for the day reduced to 71, even allowing that the two most difficult nines were the test for the day.
Mathew Badman obviously has the measure of the layout as he returned a gross 82 for the third time in a row at the course, but this time making it count for the win on one under handicap.
Allen Raaen took second place just a shot behind, winning a count back against the resurgent Kevin Blake with a better 19 to 18 after starting out the day with a couple of one point bogeys before recovering from the long drive. Kevin’s round showed promise as he completed the eighteen without a single blob for the first time since returning to Thailand at the start of this trip.
Phil Groves, who is also still trying to get back into the golfing groove after several months layoff without even holding a club, slipped or rather stumbled into fourth place two points further back, with John Carlin another shot back in fifth.
Returnee Murray Frost would have figured in the prizes if only he had not allowed his or another caddy to mark his card, as it had been filled in with scores for the A & B courses, the wrong nines, and unfortunately Murray signed for them ensuring a DQ for the day after a very nice round and a card that showed thirty seven points.
There were no 2’s’ in either division.
Before the presentations were made there was a welcome for new member J.T. Goodes together with a welcome back for Murray Frost.
Wednesday, Sept. 24, Khao Kheow B & C - Stableford
CSS 72
1st Bruce Hilde (18) 41pts
2nd Kevin Blake (8) 36pts
3rd Mark Armstrong (24) 34pts
4th Markku Tynell (23) 34pts
5th Mike Hill (21) 32pts
Another course where the group are bi-weekly visitors is Khao Kheow and while the prices are not quite so competitive, the 700 baht green vouchers go a long way towards bringing the costs of three times a week golf down towards affordable. But once again the group were amongst a very small attendance at one of the top courses in the area and certainly amongst the best value for quality and condition.
Bruce Hilde at last made his way to the top of the pecking order, and without accruing any penalty strokes, as his recent purchase of a matched set of chipping wedges plus presumably some additional tuition from his Bamboo Bar dancing partner seem to have transformed his game to the point where he looks like a contender when he finally gets to play his shots. On this day he almost flew around the course, leaving his playing partners, all much lower handicappers, flailing in his wake and unable to get within ten strokes of his final score.
Kevin Blake took second spot on level handicap some five strokes back, again without a blemish of a zero on the card. It was a very tidy round on a course that played fairly long off the yellow tees, even with the day’s “lift and place in the fairway” ruling.
Mark Armstrong, having had his handicap reduced three strokes recently, still managed to take third place after he won a count back over Markku Tynell with a score of 20 to 13. Markku had started very strongly with twenty one points after nine but faded badly over the last five holes, scraping just three points from them on his way to fourth place. Mike Hill rounded out the podium another two shots back in fifth.
Once again there were no 2’s in either of the divisions.
Prior to the presentations there was a welcome back for Markku Tynell who had been back for a little while but unable to play due to a motor accident in which he suffered a neck injury. There was also a farewell for Kevin Blake returning to Blighty just as his game was finally coming together and sporting a Hollywood smile as things were looking so rosy.
Friday, Sept. 26, The Emerald - Monthly Medals
CSS 72
Division 1 (0-15)
1st Trevor Schirmer (14) net 79
2nd Bob Webb (12) net 80
3rd Shuichi Kodaka (14) net 86
Division 2 (16+)
1st Jon Yarrow (16) net 74
2nd Markku Tynell (23) net 74
3rd Bruce Hilde (18) net 75
With the bare minimum making the required score the CSS for the day remained at 72, even though the final scores indicated that the course was playing about as long and difficult as it could be after heavy overnight rain had left it (the course) very wet and offering very little run.
Trevor Schirmer won the first division Medal after returning the highest winning total of the year to become the eighth player to be included in the list for the end of year Gold and Silver Medals. Trevor won by the slimmest of margins ahead of Bob Webb in second and Shuichi Kodaka in third.
Jon Yarrow took his first ever Monthly Medal in the second division to also add his name to the end of year entries, being the ninth in the second division list.
Jon had to go through a count back which he won with a better 36 to 40.5 against Markku Tynell after the latter had once again collapsed through the back nine following an excellent opening half when he was seven strokes better. Bruce Hilde almost made it a week to remember as he took third place just a shot behind the leading pair.
With the par threes playing particularly long on the day it was not surprising that once again there were no 2’s in either division ensuring a couple of swollen pots for the following week.
Back at The Haven there were welcome backs for Shane Heavey, Ron Kerslake and Bob Webb.
Note: If you would like to play with The Haven group, you can contact mobile 094 567 5726 or call in to The Haven Hotel, at 185 Soi 13, between Beach Road and 2nd Road. All transportation to the course is arranged and you do not need to sign up prior to the day, but you should be there by 8.15 on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday on the days that you wish to play. A schedule of courses to be played can be found on our web site at www.thehaven-hotel.com.

Thip captures deVere trophy

PSC Golf from The Billabong Golf Bar

Bob Newell, Simon Philbrook and Bobby Young.

Monday, Sept. 22, The Emerald - Stableford
After a hearty breakfast we took off for Emerald, it being a lovely day but hot, not too used to heat like this at this time of the year. Anyway we got off to an early start and the course was in grand condition apart from the odd dry patch here and there.
With only a small field we got around in no time flat. It was Peter Terry who led the way today with 34 points and John Baikie took second with 31. There were no ‘2’s recorded.
Wednesday, Sept. 24, Green Valley - Stableford
We played St. Andrews today as Green Valley had a rather large tournament being played on it by the Bangkok Bank. We were competing for the monthly deVere trophy proudly sponsored by Brian Chapman from deVere’s. The course was in great condition with the greens being recently sanded and they were at their best, i.e. fast and true but not fast enough for one of my playing partners.

Brian Chapman presents the deVere monthly award to Thip Sakulthip.

With 8 groups playing we were away on time and were very fortunate we didn’t get any rain on us, although it tried very hard for the last four holes with thunder and lightning around the hills but we finished dry.
We had a two way count back for third and fourth between Robbie Taylor and Chris Smith with Chris taking third with a fine 74 gross off his 2 handicap, edging Robbie after both returned 38 points each. Second place went to J.J. Harney with 39 points but taking the deVere trophy on the same score of 39 was Thip Sakulthip with 23 on the back nine.
There were two ‘2’s coming from Robbie Taylor and Lumpy Russell.
Friday, Sept. 26, Plutaluang - Scramble
We enjoyed another successful day at Plutaluang for our monthly scramble, with 14 groups out and a two-tee start. We were all away by about 9.45 and we literally flew around with no hold-ups at all. It was raining hard on the way to the course and was still spitting when we began playing but it didn’t stay around for long and the sun came out making for a great day for golf.

John Player, Sa, Wayne Cotterell and Eng.

The course was in great condition even though they must have had a lot of rain and carts were still allowed on the fairways.
John Player had Wayne Cotterell especially flown in from the Central coast of NSW for the day with his new hat and because Sel Wegner couldn’t get the same flight he had to get another ringer in to make up the four-ball. The Courtyard Cavaliers, missing their star putter in Helmut, just couldn’t get the putts to drop and in all the months they have played in these tournaments they had their first ever bogie.
The scores were separated by only six shots overall which is pretty consistent golf. The prizes went down to fourth place and the team taking that spot consisted of James Savage, Ramsay Smith, Clive Bruce and Rick Culley, with a score of 59. Third place went to the team of Robert Cross, J.J. Harney, Ron Gale and William Macey, with a score of 58.4, and first equal with 57.5 was the team of John Player, Wayne Cotterell, Nichawan Khiaophuang (Sa) and Sunanta Duangwaw (Eng), tying it up with the boys from The Players Lounge, Bob Newell, Paul Bourke, Simon Philbrook and Bobby Young.
It was a fantastic day out for all and a big thank you from the Billabong to the players for making this tournament such a success. Hope to see you all next month.
Note: The Billabong is situated just off Siam Country Club Road looking straight down Lake Mabprachan. Give Bob a call on 082 204 3411 if you are looking for a game.

Ron Gale and William Macey.

‘Fletch’ captures his first Monthly Mug

PSC Golf from The Growling Swan

Alain Taddei, Neil King & David Fletcher.

Peter Blackburn
Monday, Sept. 22, Mountain Shadow - Stableford
It was the start of a new week and the challenging Mountain Shadow was our booked venue, so we made our way to the Growling Swan in readiness for our departure. We had 2 mini vans booked with Alain transporting the “overflow” and we handed out welcomes to Martin Todd, who had just returned from a week of golf in Japan, Chris Stewart, Steve Jones & Leeroy Bloomfield from Western Australia and our old mate Roy “Plums” Dayton who was back with us from San Francisco and his lady Kae.
We were able to leave the GS 7 minutes early as all were on time and after a 45 minute drive we arrived at the golf course where it was fairly quiet. After a few minutes on the practice putting green we headed off to the first tee and decided to use the blue tees which meant a test for some of us.
We had 2 three-balls at the head of the field and the first one hit off 20 minutes ahead of schedule at 9.40 a.m. in excellent weather conditions, although somewhat hot and steamy. The golf course was in great shape and the greens were very well prepared as usual and with no-one ahead of us we maintained a very good pace, reaching the half way mark in one hour & fifty minutes.

Ron Grafton, Gordon Clegg & Chris Stewart.

After stopping for a drinks break before the 13th tee our pace slowed down a bit, especially as after coming off the 14th tee good old Buckers was seen writhing on the ground in agony after being accidentally hit in the “orchestra stalls” by JP’s caddy. After a quick perusal of the Rules Book it was decided that there would be no penalty to Buckers or the caddy and we proceeded at a reasonable pace, finishing the round in three hours & forty five minutes.
It had been a very enjoyable round with excellent company although very hot and it was great to get into the showers afterwards.
There were a couple of very good scores but many very ordinary ones so I guess the golf course was the winner on the day. But it was no trouble for Chris Stewart who won the A Division with a fine 39 points, with good old Ebrahim in second place with 34 points and your writer, Peter “Blacky” Blackburn, in third spot after scoring 33 points.
Ron Grafton was the winner in B Division with 37 points, 4 points ahead of John Anderson in second place and Steve Jones took out third spot with 27.
Division A (0-14)
1st Chris Stewart (4) 39pts
2nd Ebrahim (12) 34pts
3rd Peter Blackburn (13) 33pts
Division B (15+)
1st Ron Grafton (15) 37pts
2nd John Anderson (32) 33pts
3rd Steve Jones (22) 27pts
Near Pins: 5th - Chris Stewart, 8th - Duangjai Tusagad, 15th - Martin Todd, and 17th - Takeshi Hakozaki.
Long Putts: 9th - Ebrahim and 18th - Chris Stewart.
Thursday, Sept. 25, Greenwood B & C – Stroke/Monthly Mug
The sky was overcast but at least it was fine as we all made our way to The Growling Swan in readiness for our departure to the Greenwood Golf Course where we were all playing for the 27th Monthly Mug. After a late withdrawal due to sickness and a couple of regulars opting not to play we were left with an excellent field of 31 true golfers who were ready to accept the challenge of a round of stroke.
We handed out welcomes to Stuart Mann from Canberra, David Fletcher on R & R from Western Australia, Greg Bates & Neil King from Brisbane, Sal Brizzi returning after a few months in Melbourne & Brendan Devlin from Ireland. It was time to say farewell to Chris Stewart, Steve Jones, Leeroy Bloomfield & John Coombs who will shortly be returning to Western Australia and our good friend and Growling Swan stalwart Geri Crilly who is off back to Sydney for a month or so.
When we arrived at the course there was hardly anyone there. C & B were the allocated nines in that sequence so we headed off to C1 and our first group, a three-ball, got away a couple of minutes after our booked 10.00 am tee time.
The weather was still fine but very humid and it was inevitable that we would sooner or later get wet and sure enough the rain came as we were on the C6 green. We putted out and then sheltered in the adjacent drink hut for about twenty five minutes as it rained heavily and C6 green flooded but then it stopped and as usual the greens rapidly drained and although the fairways were very wet we continued our round without any more interruptions.
Apart from the wet conditions the course was in very good shape with the greens extremely good and receptive. We concluded our round in about four hours & forty five minutes which included the break for rain and the company had been terrific.
In addition to the Monthly Mug award we were able to have 2 Divisions with 5 prizes in each. There were also rewards for nearest the pins all the par threes and longest first putts on the B9 & C9 greens.
David “Fletch” Fletcher certainly enjoyed playing in the rain as he won the Monthly Mug with the only net sub-par round of the day, a net 71 – his first Mug.
Visitors figured prominently on the podium as Neil King won Division A with a net 73, one stroke better than Chris Stewart with net 74. With 2 golfers on net 75 a count back was required which resulted in Graham “Ricey” Rice (net 38 back nine) finishing third from your writer Peter “Blacky” Blackburn (net 45 back nine) in fourth spot. Another count back was needed to determine fifth place with 2 players on net 76 and it was Bill “Buffalo” Steinman (net 37 back nine) who got “the chocolates” from John Pierrel (net 44 back nine).
In Division B it was Alain “Inspector Clouseau” Taddei who was declared the winner with net 73 and in second place was Lindsay Slender with net 76. Two players on net 78 meant another count back which saw Gary Monley (net 42 back nine & net 29 on the last 6 holes) finish third from Steve Jones (net 42 back nine & net 31 on the last 6 holes) who finished fourth. Roy “Plums” Dayton finished in fifth place with a score of net 79.
The Growling Swan NAGA Award was won by Gordon Clegg for the second time in the week.
