Dolphin’s robbed by ‘ghost’ goal in Korat

Pattaya United put up a spirited display against Division
1 leaders Nakhon Ratchasima last Saturday but were ultimately undone by a
contentious 65th minute goal from Korat’s Dantrai Longjamnong.
In front of a boisterous crowd of just under 18,000 spectators at the 5th
December Stadium in Korat, the home team not surprisingly started out the
strongest but the Pattaya defence remained resolute throughout a first half
that offered little in the way of goalmouth action at either end of the
field.
Early in the second half Korat had the ball in the Pattaya net twice in
quick succession but on both occasions the ‘goals’ were correctly ruled out
for offside.
The talking point of the game came just after the hour mark when Longjamnong
headed the ball towards the Pattaya goal from a corner kick only to see it
headed off the line and onto the crossbar by a United defender. The referee
and linesman immediately signaled a goal but replays later suggested that
the ball had at no point crossed the goal line.
It was a cruel blow to the United players who had nullified most of Korat’s
attacking threat and were looking like coming away from the game with at
least a point. United created some chances of their own late in the game as
they chased an equalizer but luck was not on their side on this occasion.
The win gave Korat a convincing lead at the top of the table but left United
at the lower end of the standings and with a few anxious matches to
negotiate to secure their Division 1 status for next season. United’s next
fixture is on Sunday, Oct. 12 when they entertain visiting Saraburi FC at
the Nongprue Stadium in Pattaya. Kick-off is scheduled for 4 p.m.

an event called “Max MuayThai” in Khon Kaen province where Buakaw came up
big and claimed his victory with a unanimous decision.
Aside from the main event between Buakaw and Eriko, the event will feature

Thailand’s women cricketers impress as Pakistan win Asian Games gold
Stylish batsman Nattaya
Boochatham has taken over as Captain of the Women’s National Cricket Team.
Richard Lockwood
Thailand’s women cricket team, winners of two cricket tournaments
over the last two years, took to the world stage again last month as they
took part in the women’s 20-over cricket competition at the recently
completed Asian Games. The girls have become firm favourites in Thailand
where they won competitions at 25 and 40 overs in Chiang Mai and were hoping
to win a medal in Incheon, South Korea, which would have been another real
breakthrough for cricket in the Kingdom.
Thailand made an impressive start to the competition by defeating Malaysia
by nine wickets in their opening match. The Thai girls bowled well and
fielded magnificently to restrict Malaysia to a total of just 49 for 8 in 20
overs and the top three in the batting order saw their side home with only
one wicket down.
Nattakan Chantam, still only 18 years old, is making quite a name for
herself in international cricket with a string of match-winning performances
and finished with the outstanding figures of 4-0-6-4 with no fewer than 20
dot balls.
Thailand’s women cricketers
impressed at the 17th Asian Games.
Nattaya Boochatham captained the side against Malaysia in
the absence of Sornnarin Tippoch and also took the responsibility of opening
the batting and was there to score the winning runs. Now against a stronger
Nepal side in the second round she did it again, captaining the side to see
Thailand home by six wickets and a place in the quarter-finals.
Nattaya has developed into a left-hander with an impeccable technique and
enormous powers of concentration and she has shown that these are still
important attributes even in 20-over cricket, particularly in low-scoring
encounters. She has done the almost impossible in taking the place of
Sornnarin Tippoch as the rock on which Thailand women’s cricket is being
built.
The girls could take pride at their ninth consecutive victory at this level
as they have confirmed their reputation as the best side in ACC women’s
cricket.
With China and Sri Lanka already through to the semi-finals, Thailand faced
Pakistan in the third quarter-final of the women’s cricket competition. A
late change in the schedule mean that the Thai girls faced defending
champions Pakistan rather than Japan, which was scant reward for winning
their group so impressively.
The start of the match was delayed by overnight rain and the contest was
reduced to 14 overs aside. When play finally got underway Thailand began
with an all seam attack and restricted the opposition to 37 for 2 after 7
overs. Pakistan lost their third wicket in the eighth over as Bismah Maroof
was run out for 16 as the Thai fielding continued to shine.
Thailand had acquitted themselves well in the field and had competed on even
terms with Pakistan for the first 10 overs of the match. The difference in
quality began to tell however as runs flowed at the end of the innings and
Pakistan finished on a strong 97 for 5 in their 14 overs, with 42 runs
coming in the last four overs.
Chasing 98 to earn a place in the semi-finals Thailand struggled throughout
with the bat, the exception again being Nattaya Boochatham who reached 17 as
she took her tournament average above 50. The Thai team could only reach 46
for 7 in their 14 overs and Pakistan had won by 51 runs and would face China
in the semi-finals.
Thailand’s women cricketers had looked the part in their opening two matches
in the Asian Games but once again found the step up in class too much. It
was their fourth defeat in as many matches against the same opposition and
once again showed the difference in quality between playing in ACC
competitions, where Thailand have ruled supreme, and then facing a full
member country which has been playing regularly in ICC competitions.
Thailand’s women’s team are an improving side but so are Pakistan and the
gulf in class remains significant.
The Pakistan team went on to retain their Asian Games women’s cricket title
as they bowled out China for just 37 in the semi-finals and won by nine
wickets, then they overcame Bangladesh in the final in a match decided by
the Duckworth Lewis method. Pakistan took the gold medal, Bangladesh the
silver and Sri Lanka the bronze.
Thailand need to play more matches against this standard of opposition if
they are to progress further in the future but the girls can again be proud
of their efforts here in South Korea.

Pattaya United teach football to Kamphaeng Phet students
Pattaya United manager Songyot
Klinsrisouk (2nd left) led the 90 selected youths in the training program.
Jetsada Homklin
Ninety northern youths recently headed south to take up sports as an
alternative to using drugs at a camp run by the Pattaya United Football
Club.
Coaches and trainers from both Pattaya and Chonburi FC’s ran the Oct. 1 camp
for Kamphaeng Phet province youths at the Nongprue Stadium.
Pattaya United manager Songyot Klinsrisouk, with leading Thai football
athletes including Sarawut Fuengkaen, Pathipat Amatontree and Wacharapong
Buasri, offered a two-hour lesson on all aspects of the game.
The program, run with the National Command Center for Drugs for the second
year in a row, pointed students from Kampaeng Phet Sports School and other
provincial youths toward football as a way to spend their free time instead
of using drugs.
Sports Bag: Phoenix rising
Phoenix Gold Golf Course.
Dear sports editor,
Despite some recent negative reports about golf courses in the Pattaya area,
last Thursday I played at the newly opened Mountain Course at Phoenix Gold
Golf and all I can say is that it is a job well done with regards to the
renovation. I and my friends had a great round followed by another 9 holes
on the beautiful Ocean Course.
We purposely went there on Thursday as they are currently offering a Sports
Day rate at only 900 baht for 18 holes and we didn’t have to use a golf cart
as they are not mandatory anymore. What good news! We will for sure revisit
the club again before the end of the month although I understand that they
are closing the course for a few days for Singha Open.
All the best,

City pay penalty for Rooney’s costly miss
Bangkok Casuals Football League Div 1
Pattaya City line up before their match against
Londoner in Bangkok, Saturday, Oct. 4.
Pattaya City kicked off their league season with a well
contested battle against a powerful Londoner side at the Arsenal Centre of
Excellence in Bangkok last Saturday. But City were left ruing a woeful penalty
miss by last season’s player of the season, Tommy Rooney.
City, losing 1-0 in the 2nd half, had a glorious chance to equalize, but Rooney
(100% in penalty takes so far this season) stubbed his spot kick weakly into the
arms of the Londoner goalkeeper.
The day started with a multitude of problems as City stalwart Rod Torrie
couldn’t make the game as he was suffering from a severe bout of Ombrophobia.
Many people think that Ombrophobia is a made up disease (fear of rain) but the
symptoms are very clear. People who suffer from Ombrophobia have an “Inability
to think or speak clear, uncontrollable feelings of panic, anxiety or dread,
have an inability to track back in defence, and like to moan at people for a bad
pass.”
City left back Shane said “To be honest I thought Ombrophobia was a load of
rubbish, but it must be true – Rodders suffers from all the symptoms – I think
we should get him some counseling.”
Manager Terry commented, “Now I’ve heard of Ombrophobia, I am thinking it is
contagious, as I am pretty sure all the team has got it!”
Pattaya, despite the setback of Rod Torrie, started the game in bright fashion.
Luke Turnill smashed a 30-yard pile-driver that narrowly missed. At the other
end, Harry was in impeccable form making a couple of sharp saves against
Londoner’s speedy striker.
Richie Ruthless was in imperious form at the back as he tightly marked winger
Scholley, even though he had a yellow card for tugging the Londoner flyer.
Unfortunately for Pattaya, Londoner managed to get a winner in the second half
through good work from the centre forward Beale. It was the first time he
escaped from man of the match debutant Chris Wilmott all afternoon and slotted
from a tight angle.
It was a terrific display of determination shown by City. Bobby typified this by
courageously playing through an injury he sustained from a vicious kick by a
12-year old in a mid-week game. Manager Terry went onto say, “Bobby showed
terrific mental strength even lacing up his football boots today, as not many
lads would get over the embarrassment of getting beaten up by a school kid. I
know he pulled out of a few challenges today, but let’s face it – he is from
Yorkshire!!”
When questioned about the choice of penalty taker, Wilcox went onto say, “I’ve
never seen Tommy Rooney move so fast, apart from when it comes to running away
from his bar bill. He wasn’t meant to take the penalty, but unfortunately we are
paying him 5 baht per goal and he wasn’t going to let anyone else have it.”
Pattaya City would like to thank Pattaya Rent a Car, I- Rovers, Gecko
Properties, Thai Visa, KPK foods, Asia Backpackers and Puma for their
sponsorship in this year’s league. If anyone is interested in playing football
at an amateur standard, please contact out Facebook page:

‘Buffalo’ Bill & Fletch on top at KK
PSC Golf from The Growling Swan - 2014
David Fletcher, Phil Taylor & Bill Steinman.
Peter Blackburn
Monday, Sept. 29, Khao Kheow - Stableford
The very popular Khao Kheow was the venue for the first
competition of this week and we had 26 golfers signed up to take up the
challenge.
We welcomed back Bob Akapita from Darwin, Col Hopkins from Brisbane and Rick
Forrest, Bob Cannon, John Mills & Brendon Cope from Perth, Western Australia
and also said farewell to Stu Mann who will shortly be returning to
Canberra.
We assembled at the Starter’s point where we were told it was to be C & A
nines in that order. As there was no-one directly in front of us on C1 our
first group, a three-ball, got away 10 minutes before our booked time of
10.00 am.
It was very hot and steamy with very little breeze but the course was in
great shape and the greens in superb condition. We completed the C nine in
just under 2 hours and then had to wait as we had caught up with the Thai
group of four in front but it was a welcome break as we were struggling with
the humidity.
Alain Taddei, Bob Akapita & Mike Gosden.
A couple of holes into A nine the thunder & lightning started and the rain
came but it was not too bad and didn’t hold us up much but we were waiting
several times for the group in front. Just as we were putting out on the
last hole the heavens opened again with a heavy downpour but it didn’t last
too long so the groups behind us were not affected very much.
It was a tough day on a challenging course with just 2 golfers playing to
their handicap or better and the winner in A Division was “Buffalo” Bill
Steinman with a fine 38 points, 1 point ahead of Keith “Kissy” Buchanan in
second place. With three people on 35 points a count back was necessary
which resulted in Martin “Toddy” Todd (19 point back nine) finishing third
from Greg Bates (17 point back nine) in fourth spot and Neil King (16 point
back nine) just missed out.
Fresh from winning the Monthly Mug the week before David “Fletch” Fletcher
was victorious in B Division with 35 points and Roy “Plums” Dayton was
second with 32 points. Another count back was required as there were three
golfers on 31 points and the result was that John Mills (19 point back nine)
finished in third place from Stu Mann (16 point back nine) in fourth spot
and Rick Forrest (12 point back nine) was the unlucky one.
The Growling Swan NAGA Award was won by Phil Taylor.
Division A (0-14)
1st Bill Steinman (10) 38pts
2nd Keith Buchanan (14) 36pts
3rd Martin Todd (8) 35pts
4th Greg Bates (12) 35pts
Division B (15+)
1st David Fletcher (34) 35pts
2nd Roy Dayton (26) 32pts
3rd John Mills (20) 31pts
4th Stu Mann (22) 31pts
Near Pins: A5 – Keith Buchanan, C3 – Bob Akapita, C8 – Bill Steinman
Long Putts: A9 – Ebrahim, C9 - Peter Blackburn
Thursday, Oct. 2, Green Valley – Stableford
After a late withdrawal due to sickness and one “no show” we were
left with a field of 26 golfers who were keen to tackle the Green Valley
Golf Course.
There were several welcomes including Kurt Eric Persson & Seesa Phompinmon
back with us again, Freddy Starbeck playing with us for the very first time,
Peter Bye who had just returned from the Philippines, Bob Maloney from Perth
with Wayne Waywood from Collie in Western Australia and my son, Matthew
Blackburn here from Perth for a week’s holiday.
The weather was fine but cloudy and we assembled at the first tee awaiting a
couple of groups of Korean lady golfers but nonetheless were able to get our
first four-ball away right on schedule at 10.00 am. The ladies did not hold
us up so we proceeded at a good pace and the golf course was in very good
condition with excellent greens which were mostly very quick and we
completed the front nine in just on two hours.
During the second nine the weather took a turn for the worse and there was
much thunder & some lightning but the rain held off until we were walking
off the eighteenth green – dodged the bullet once again. The groups behind
us were not so fortunate and there were several delays in play but all were
able to complete their rounds. Despite the weather it had been very
enjoyable and once again the company was great.
Mike “Hunter” Gosden returned to form and was the winner in A Division with
39 points and another in form golfer “Buffalo” Bill Steinman was second on
37 points. A count back was required to determine third spot as there were 2
golfers with 34 points and it was Peter Bye (19 point back nine) who
prevailed over Bob Maloney (18 point back nine).
In B Division an outstanding round by Alain “Inspector Clousseau) Taddei
which enabled him to compile 43 points (26 points on the front nine) saw him
declared the winner and there were three golfers on 39 points vying for
second & third places. The count back resulted in veteran Ken Hole (20 point
back nine & 14 points on the last 6 holes) taking second spot from Sandy
“Cindy Lauper” Leiper (20 point back nine & 13 points on the last 6 holes)
in third place with Adrian Schmidt (19 point back nine) just missing out.
The Growling Swan NAGA Award, went to Bob Akapita.
Division A (0-14)
1st Mike Gosden (13) 39pts
2nd Bill Steinman (10) 37pts
3rd Peter Bye (14) 34pts
Division B (15+)

2nd Ken Hole (16) 39pts

Wylie doubles up as weather turns sour
PSC Golf from Siam Country Resort
Jonathan Pratt eyes his tee shot.
Tuesday, Sept. 30, Pattavia - Stableford
Tuesday was a visit to Pattavia, with intermittent
rain over pretty much the whole day, and with carts not allowed on the fairways
we implemented ‘lift, clean & place’ through the green. The rain wasn’t heavy
enough to stop play, just sufficient to keep the cover on the bag and keep the
grips dry.
Jeff Wylie (H/cap 7) led the way home today, with Neil Harvey (17) in 2nd spot.
Highlight of the day had to be Jonathan’s near pin on the Par 3, 7th, knocking
Jeff off the marker after he had stiffed it to make an easy 2. Jonathan and Neil
shared the near pins with 2 each.
Thursday, Oct. 2, Khao Kheow - Stableford
Thursday we went to Khao Kheow following a visit the
week before, when we had played C & B which was in great condition. This week we
were sent to the C & A combination, and while the C is in great nick,
unfortunately the A is in relatively poor condition, with the grass covering
sparse in some areas over several of the fairways. Hole A8 is currently playing
as a medium length par 4 as the tee has been moved forward 50+ yards while some
renovations are undertaken.
Jeff Wylie led the way with a solid 33 points, with Jonathan Pratt (11) on 30
points collecting the 2nd prize. Despite the par 3s being collectively easier
than Pattavia’s, only 2 were won today, Jeff & Willem with 1 each and Willem
converting for a nice 2 on A5.
Note: Siam Country Resort, Restaurant & Bar is located just off Siam
Country Club Rd, after going under the arch past the 7/11, turn right after 50
metres, with the venue on the left another 200 metres along. Golf from here is
generally played on Tuesday & Thursday, with the Resort hosting prompt
presentations on both days. As a PSC affiliated venue we welcome ALL golfers,
including ladies & seniors (>60s) who have opted for the “Silver” tee option.

Rune Aksdal four time winner
PSC Golf from Lewiinski’s Golf Society
Rune Askdal (right) with
Tookta.
Sunday, Sept. 28, Green Valley -
Stableford
A Flight
1st Paul Smith (4) 40pts
2nd Neil King (6) 39pts
3rd J P Maffray (11) 37pts
B Flight
1st Rune Aksdal (25) 44pts
2nd William Peach (16) 39pts
3rd Mick Beresford (18) 36pts
Near Pins: No 5 Rune Aksdal, No 8 Greg Bates, No 12 Neil Young, No 16 Gerry
Roche
31 players squared up to contest the Sunday bash at the traditional Sunday
venue of Green Valley Rayong. To say that Rune Aksdal vanquished the field
is putting it lightly. He was a tigeresque 4 shots clear of both divisions.
He is fortunate that he has an alias because the field might be after him
following his brilliant 44 point performance which contained a near pin that
he converted for a 2.
William Peach was five shots back for the silver and a count back was
required to sort out the bronze between Mickey Beresford, Colin ‘the Donkey’
Davis and Eddy ‘the Eagle’ Beilby, with Mickey having the upper hand.
Paul Smith’s sparkling 40 point return was the best of the mere mortals in A
Flight while Neil King took the top flight silver with a solid 39 points and
old friend JP Maffray rounded out the flight.
Neil King, Dave Stockman, Greg Bates and Gerry Roche shared the 2’s pot with
Rune.
Tuesday, Sept. 30, Khao Kheow - Stableford
A Flight
1st Eddy Beilby (15) 38pts
2nd Neil King (6) 37pts
3rd Colin Hopkins (12) 33pts
B Flight
1st Rune Aksdal (25) 37pts
2nd Jim Elphick (26) 36pts
3rd Marcus Earp (33) 34pts
A visit to Khao Kheow is usually a popular and very competitive affair, and
today’s visit proved to be no exception playing in very hot and humid
conditions as the scores reflected the difficulty with only three players
breaking par.
Eddy ‘the Eagle’ Beilby, playing his usual steady game, headed the senior
flight with a man of the match 68 points, although Neil King gave him a
close race as he was just a point adrift. Colin Hopkins took the third spot
all on his own with a useful 33 points after the initial count back which
left Kris Kay potless at sea level.
The inform Rune Aksdal took his second podium position of the week as he
headed the junior flight with a solid 37 points. Rune was followed up the
podium steps by Jimmy ‘two shots’ Elphick with a steady even par round.
Marcus Earp fired a useful 34 points to close the flight out.
Neil King a brace, Colin Davis and Phil Davies shared the 2’s pot.
Wednesday, Oct. 1, Bangpra - Stableford
A Flight
1st Paul Smith (4) 38pts
2nd John Pierrel (11) 36pts
3rd Neil King (15) 32pts
B Flight
1st Rod Brown (17) 38pts
2nd Rune Askdal (25) 37pts
3rd Aiden Murray (19) 34pts
Nothing new to report, the same old faces and Paul Smith with his second win
of the week. Paul was followed up the podium steps by John Pierrel with a
steady even par round as Neil King, who himself made it three flight spots
this week, closed the flight with 32 points.
Aussie star Rod Brown was one clear of Rune Askdal and Aiden Murray rounded
out the flight on 34 points.
With so much talent on display it was surprising to find that no one carded
a 2.
Friday, Oct. 3, Silky Oak - Stableford
A Flight
1st Adrian Schmidt (15) 41pts
2nd Paul Smith (4) 39pts
3rd Peter Bye (14) 38pts
B Flight
1st Rune Askdal (25) 38pts
2nd Aiden Murray (19) 37pts
3rd Christy Knight (22) 34pts
Adrian Schmidt was best in A Flight and on the day with a rousing 41 points,
relegating two-time winner this week Paul Smith to second place with 39
points. Paul was one clear of Peter Bye.
Rune Askdal continued his remarkable run of form as he topped B Flight with
38 points. His three wins and a second place finish has earned him a trip to
the handicap office. Aiden Murray picked up the silver with 37 points
leaving newly arrived back from Ireland Christy ‘good’ Knight to close the
flight with 34.
Paul Smith retuned a remarkable three 2’s along with six other players.

Rosco races to victory at Burapha
PSC Golf from The Billabong Golf Bar
Bob Philp, Ron Kroening, Jerry and William
Macey.
Wednesday, Oct. 1, Green Valley -
Stableford
We were joined by the Kiwi Tour group today at our usual
venue Green Valley. The course as usual was in magnificent condition and
the work going on around the course is just fantastic, new cart paths
etc., good for everyone.
With seven groups playing we got away a little bit early and were around
in just on four hours. It was dammed hot for the first nine holes but it
didn’t rain until after were in having a beer.
Rosco and his Tukatar.
The Kiwi connection made a good fist of the course and some got into the
prizes also. The prizes went down to sixth place which was taken by one of
our regular boys Wayne Cotterell with 35 points. Fifth place went to Jerry
from Christchurch, fourth to Barry Copestake, both also with 35, and third
to Bob Philp on 36. William Macey with 37 secured the silver but taking top
spot was Ron Kroening with a fine 39 points, being the best of the Kiwi
team.
Friday, Oct. 3, Burapha - Stableford
We had a couple of no shows at Burapha due the fact one person
couldn’t answer the phone another couldn’t get off the nest, but I guess
when you are on holiday you need to relax.
Of those who did turn up it was to be Rosco’s day with a 37 off the bat
round the front nine and 23 points. He matched that with a 17 points finish
on the back for 40 points to win the day by 7 clear. Coming a distant second
was Capt. Bob on 33.
Rosco also managed to get two ‘2’s and Capt Bob got the other one.
Note: The Billabong is situated just off Siam Country road looking
straight down Lake Mabprachan. Give Bob a call on 082 204 3411 if you are
looking for a game.

Warberg wins monthly award
PSC Golf from Tropical Bert’s
Dick Warberg (right) is
presented with the MBMG Group Golfer of the Month award by Mark West.
Derek Brook
Tuesday, Sept. 30, Green Valley – Stableford
The day did not look at all promising as the rain was coming down
early morning but we still managed to gather enough for 4 groups so off we
went to the course.
The rain stopped as we reached the course but there was still that damp
feeling around as we headed for the first tee. The course was lightly used
today and except for a group ahead that we had to slow down for at times, we
moved along very nicely. The layout itself had recovered from the storms
well and apart from slow greens it played well.
Back at Bert’s it was soon time for the results and they were important as,
it being the last Tuesday of the month, it was also the MBMG Golfer of the
Month award.
The winner on the day was Dick Warberg with 39 points and we then had a
count back on 37 points that saw Mark West in second, Max Scott in third and
Bob Watson in fourth.
Maurice Roberts (left) and Bob
Watson (right) with Nim from Tropical Bert’s.
The golfer of the month award was a close affair, however
by winning on the day, and other contenders not winning the count back, the
MBMG Group Golfer of the Month was Dick Warberg. Well done Dick.
Near Pins: Landis Brooks, Max Scott, AVD, Mark West
Friday, Oct. 3,
Treasure Hill - Stableford
A rainy Thursday night made for a nervous Tropical Bert’s golf
group Friday morning. Even though the sky was clear in the morning, the
forecast was for more rain that afternoon, right in the middle of the golf
day. Well, nothing to do but get out there and hope for the best. Treasure
Hill was waiting.
During the round at Treasure Hill, perhaps many golfers were hoping for some
rain to provide an excuse for the scores this day, yet despite some rumbling
off in the distance the weather remained clear.
Treasure Hill is currently in excellent condition, but it is a challenging
layout. Group after group returned to admit that on this day the course won.
So how would it end?
Tropical Bert’s has no shortage of talent, but some days things get tough
and it’s a rare event when no one comes close to hitting their handicap. The
best of the lot was Maurice Roberts (11) with 33 points. Well done Maurice!
Bob Watson (4) lost to Maurice on count back with his 33 points. Mark West
(13) claimed third place with 31 points, and Tom Herrington (17) even got
into the money by taking fourth place with a measly 29.
Despite the scores no one complained about the course, and the upcoming PSC
monthly to be held there couldn’t be at a better place.
Near Pins: Bob Watson, Dick Warberg, Tom Herrington

Jon Yarrow completes rare treble
IPGC golf from The Haven
Jon Yarrow, Erik Donnestad & Phillip
Cass.
Monday, Sept. 29, Treasure Hill - Stableford
CSS 71
1st Jon Yarrow (16) 38pts
2nd Trevor Schirmer (14) 37pts
3rd Shane Heavey (19) 37pts
4th Markku Tynell (23) 34pts
5th Bruce Hilde (16) 32pts
6th Mathew Badman (11) 32pts
The course was found to be in tip top condition with very few signs
of wear, and with thunder rolling all around but no sign of
lightning, the group were fortunate not to experience any wet
weather.
It is not often that the CSS at Treasure Hill goes down but on this
occasion playing from the yellow tees, which had been set well back
towards the usual white positions, the scoring was unusually good
ensuring that it reduced to 71.
Jon Yarrow started off what was to be a record equaling series of
results with a two under return to lead in a very happy set of
golfers and could have been much better as he managed to blob the
11th and 12th holes, but he had done enough over the front nine to
just keep ahead of the close battle for second.
Trevor Schirmer won that tussle after winning a count back with a
better 18 to 17 and leave Shane Heavey in third spot, both having
scores that would normally be winners.
Markku Tynell continues to play steadily to finish amongst the
podium placements as he did once again in fourth, with Bruce Hilde
still competitive from his reduced handicap and winning a count back
with Mathew Badman for fifth with a better 16 to 15.
Once again there were no 2’s in the second division but Trevor
Schirmer, made up slightly for missing out on the win, slotting in
the only one in the first division to claim the roll over pot.
Wednesday, Oct. 1, Khao Kheow A & C - Stableford
CSS 72
1st Jon Yarrow (16) 38pts
2nd Ole Stamnes (28) 35pts
3rd Erik Donnestad (4) 31pts
4th Trevor Schirmer (14) 31pts
5th Markku Tynell (23) 30pts
The bi-weekly competition at Khao Kheow was as usual well attended
but again no-one was able to catch the runaway Jon Yarrow who
returned yet another two under handicap to win, on this occasion by
three clear and once again slipping in not two but four
zero-pointers. It further underlined that it will not be too long in
the future that his handicap will be down near the single figure
mark after returning a card containing nine 3-pointers and one
4-pointer, a sparkling results indeed and well worthy of his second
win of the week.
Ole Stamnes made it a happy return to Pattaya golf following his
annual summer holiday in Oslo with a well deserved second place,
three shots behind Jon but a further four in front of third placed
mentor and playing partner Erik Donnestad. Eric needed to win a
count back to hold his position, which he did taking 7 from the last
three holes to deny Trevor Schirmer. Markku Tynell slipped onto the
podium once more a shot back in fifth place.
Prior to the prize presentations there was a farewell for Bruce
Hilde together with welcome backs for Al Rolnik, Ole Stamnes and
Erik Donnestad. Interestingly Erik and his wife Anna were recently
the winners in the Mixed Foursomes Swedish Open no mean feat as it
was completely open with many European professionals in the field
vying for the honours.
Friday, Oct. 3, Greenwood B & C – Stableford
CSS 75 NC
1st Jon Yarrow (16) 34pts
2nd Phillip Cass (19) 33pts
3rd Markku Tynell (23) 33pts
4th Mathew Badman (11) 33pts
5th Erik Donnestad (4) 33pts
Another of the regular courses that the group play was also found to
be in excellent condition and once again the competition was far
enough away from Pattaya to be able to spend the day under cloud
cover but without a drop of rain as the home base roads were again
flooded.
And once again the top of the podium was claimed by Jon Yarrow but
four strokes worse than his previous two wins and the result was
also a much closer affair with eight other players within two shots.
But Jon’s win was the third in a row and a very rare occurrence in
the group from Soi 13 where the triple win in the same week has only
been achieved twice before, once in 2008 by Kevin Taylor from Leeds
and once by Stephen Beard in 2003, so its announcement resulted in
an extra round of appreciation at the prize giving.
The chasing pack was led in by Phillip Cass after he had prevailed
in the four-way count back with the best return of 18 for the nine
followed by Markku Tynell who scored 17 in third.
Mathew Badman was playing his last game and so was pleased to figure
amongst the podium placements after he claimed fourth with 11 on the
back six as Erik Donnestad made 10 after they had tied the nine on
16 each. There were another four players just missing out just a
shot away.
With the course playing about as tough as it gets and all the par
threes having the tees set well back it was no surprise to find that
once again there were no 2’s.
Note. If you would like to play with The Haven group, you can
contact mobile 094 567 5726 or call in to The Haven Hotel, at 185
Soi 13, between Beach Road and 2nd Road. All transportation to the
course is arranged and you do not need to sign up prior to the day,
but you should be there by 8.15 on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday on
the days that you wish to play. A schedule of courses to be played
can be found on our web site at www.thehaven-hotel.com.

It’s a family affair
Travellers Rest Golf Group
Carmen and Graham Hurdon - winners at
Mountain Shadow and Greenwood.
Andy Rich
October is with us again and the great migration of golfers from
the western world is building by the day, with the arrival of familiar
faces seeking better weather and golf courses in prime condition,
amongst other things.
The early birds flying south will have discovered a hotter climate but
also that it is still the rainy season in Thailand and will probably
have had to use their golf umbrellas for some protection from the
elements at least once this past week.
Monday, Sept. 29, Bangpra - Stableford
On Monday at Bangpra, Jim Cooper, the guy with the gravelly
Scottish accent (in fact he has so much gravel in his voice I could
resurface my front drive with it), took the course and the opposition
apart and his 41 points left everybody else speechless. Just as well, as
you don’t want to get into an argument with Jim.
Second and third place could only be decided after a count back as they
both finished with 31 points, but Mike Smith pushed Fergus Brennan into
the back end of the pantomime horse position.
1st Jim Cooper (16) 41pts
2nd Mike Smith (6) 31pts
3rd Fergus Brennan (12) 31pts
Wednesday, Oct. 1, Greenwood - Stableford
On Wednesday the TRGG headed over to Greenwood (C and B
nines) and a course that plays long when it is wet. It resulted in a
family affair which I assume ended amicably as at the end of the day
Graham and Carmen Hurdon could only be separated after a count back.
Mike Smith again got into the frame but only as best boy, finishing in
third.
1st Graham Hurdon (9) 35pts
2nd Carmen Hurdon (18) 35pts
3rd Mike Smith (5) 33pts
Friday, Oct. 3, Mt. Shadow - Stableford
Whilst all around were getting soaked on Friday, we enjoyed a
dry day at Mountain Shadow and Mr and Mrs Hurdon showed that Wednesday’s
result was no fluke. This time Carmen did the business with a very
commendable 37 points and finished top of the pile. Her husband Graham
had to settle for third place after being beaten on count back by Jim
Cleaver.
Unfortunately the weather had the last word by causing a power-cut in
the area which meant the showers were not working so we all trooped back
to Pattaya in a very uncomfortable disheveled state.
1st Carmen Hurdon (18) 37pts
2nd Jim Cleaver (8) 35pts
3rd Graham Hurdon (9) 35pts
Good luck to all you golfers for the coming week and if you would like
to play a round of golf with the TRGG please phone Fergus Brennan on 086
056 7019 or pop into the Ned Kelly Bar in Soi Lengkee and add your name
to the weekly lists which are posted on the notice board.

Bolger blows away storm and the field
IPGC Pattaya Golf Society at the Elephant Bar
Tony Campbell & Jon Batty.
September closed for the Pattaya Golf Society
with a visit to Mountain Shadow to play a stableford competition on
the well prepared course.
The day showed a miserable face to welcome the group as clouds
gathered over the backdrop of hills and, as frequently happens at
the course, rolls of thunder closed in around the noon mark and
lightning made its presence known as one caddy took a slight hit via
a putter and the top was exploded off an Emperor palm which graced
the entrance to the clubhouse. All frightening stuff but eventually
the storm abated and play was able to continue.
With soft fairways and slower, rain affected greens, scores were
kept low and Tony Campbell survived to post a score of 32 points for
third whilst Charlie Landrebe went one better with 33 points for
second. Winning for the third week in a row was Gary Bolger and his
39 points was completely unexpected at the top of the leaderboard.
Generously he volunteered an immediate cut in his handicap.
There were ‘2’s on all the par threes with Dave Robinson, Alan
Flynn, Tony Campbell and Wichai Tananusorn sharing the spoils.
The bar’s consolation beer went to Bunny Forde and Keith Melbourne
did what he does best - celebrated his return with the Booby Bevy
for a lacklustre start to his annual golf trip.
Mountain Shadow still retains a comfortable place in the minds of
PGS golfers, storm or no storm!
Tony Campbell finds form
1st Tony Campbell (8) 39pts
2nd Murray Edwards (22) 37pts
3rd Robbie Taylor (11) 34pts
T4th Chris Smith (2) 33pts
T4th Wichai Tananusorn (8) 33pts
The Pattaya Golf Society started the month with an Order of Merit
stableford round at Khao Kheow on Wednesday 1 October. Early
planning went out the window following two golfers not bothering to
turn up. If there is one thing golf organisers detest it is the
no-show, particularly when they request transport.
The course, still wet from recent rain, was nonetheless well
presented. Allocated the A and C nines, preferred lies were in place
giving a guarantee of good lies provided one ’s ball found the
fairway. Putting surfaces had been recently sanded, but still gave a
reasonably true and consistent roll.
From our five groups, there were four ‘2’s; Tony Campbell, Wichai
Tananusorn and Ron Mathews all scoring theirs on A5, whilst Alan
Flynn picked one up at C8. Near Pins were won by Alan Flynn (A3),
Wichai Tananusorn (A5, C3) and Robbie Taylor (C8).
Scoring was good at the top, with two players breaking par. The
first of these, Murray Edwards, threatened all sorts of records
after amassing 25 points on the front nine. Clearly the turn is a
good place to start thinking about one’s swing, as Murray appears to
have done. His back nine saw him come home with a mere 12 points!
Winner Tony Campbell showed more consistency with a very well-put
together round, accumulating 39 points.
Back at the Elephant Bar a welcome back was extended to Erik
Anttonen from Finland while John Tallet’s name was drawn as the
winner of the beer draw. The Booby Bevy went to today’s winner, Tony
Campbell, found guilty of failing to show due and proper care of
club property, namely eight scorecards returned from the day’s
round. The cards, containing the scores of four of the five
podium-placers, were eventually found by Khao Kheow restaurant staff
in a rubbish-bin. Their attempts to dry the sodden cards, by hanging
them over the grill of a fan, were appreciated, if futile. TiT!
Pattavia’s pin
placements –
a huge test
1st Jon Batty (9) 37pts
T2nd David Thomas (8) 31pts
T2nd Steve Donahue (10) 31pts
After an unusual delay, which resulted in a booby bevy, the Pattaya
Golf Society finally made Sukhumvit before heading up the 331 for
our stableford competition, at Pattavia Century CC.
Even allowing for much recent rain, the course was well presented
with fairways and bunkers in good to very good order. The greens,
although consistent and true, are particularly difficult to master
as most greens are domed. Putting on these sloping surfaces is a
real test, unless your ball is immediately below the hole. If the
approach shot is slightly off, getting up and down would test even
the best, such is the severity of many slopes around the holes.
Our small number of four groups did not manage a ‘2’ between them,
and the scoring, apart from the winner, was modest indeed. In joint
second was the recently returned Steve Donahue who managed a
creditable 31 points, creditable because he wouldn’t have played
this course for some time.
No such excuse can be offered on behalf of the other player who tied
for second. Having hacked his way around the course, and suffering
two attacks of the dreaded s….s on the way, he would not have
expected his lowly 31 points would make any podium, let alone this
one…..but such was the difficulty of those pin placements, it did.
The winning score of 37 was a class act given the way the course was
set up. This was the one golfer who managed better than all others,
the best way to approach those greens. Yes, he still missed his fair
share of makeable putts, but he got a few as well. His ball striking
was also good enough to avoid many of the pitfalls that most found.
Back at the Elephant Bar, Toshiro Aoki won the lucky beer draw. The
booby bevy was awarded to Gary Bolger; the only person in the whole
of Thailand whose timepiece read 0800 when in fact it should have
stated 0900. Rushing to catch up to the waiting mini-van on the back
of a speeding motor-bike taxi is no way to prepare for the test that
is Pattavia.

Lawton leads the way at soggy Khao Kheow
PSC golf from The Outback Golf Bar
From left: Bob Mattes, Bob
St. Aubin, Usman Janjua and Dennis Pelly.
Monday, Sept. 29, Burapha –
Stableford
The A course was played in hot stifling conditions but at the
start of B we knew the weather was taking a turn for the worse as a cool
breeze developed and the sky began to darken. Sure enough, with a few
holes to go the heavens opened and flooded the course. Some elected not
to continue but thirteen chose to finish after waiting for the course to
drain.
In Div B the winner was Bob Lindborg with 34pts from Marek Wernicke and
Ed Turner both with 32 and Div A was once again won by Brad Jordison
with 35pts from Ralph Kaeding (32) and Carl Luke (29).
Welcome back to Ed Turner and Carl Luke, and a warm welcome to Ralph,
Marek and Heiko.
There were six ‘2’s from Pete Stonebridge, John Cunningham, Jim
Brackett, Ralf Kaeding, Ed Turner and Dennis Pelly, who used a driver
from the tee and on the green!
Div A (0-15)
1st Brad Jordison (05) 35pts
2nd Ralph Kaeding (15) 32pts
3rd Carl Luke (15) 29pts
Div B (16+)
1st Bob Lindborg (23) 34 pts
2nd Ed Turner (20) 33 pts
3rd Marek Wernicke (22) 32 pts
Tuesday, Sept. 30, Khao Kheow – Stableford
We were greeted at Khao Kheow this week by a course that probably should
not have been open but it was, so we took the decision to declare all
the bunkers GUR and the use of a tee-peg thru the green was permissible.
In doing so the competition was deemed a non-qualifier for handicap
purposes.
Suzi won the day with 42 hard earned points from Bob St. Aubin (37) who
chased her all the way until a couple of mistakes on the back nine took
the wind out of his sails. Sugar was third with his 35; it was golf but
not as we know it but the day was enjoyed by all.
1st Suzi Lawton (25) 42pts
2nd Bob St. Aubin (13) 37pts
3rd Sugar Ray Handford (18) 35pts
Wednesday, Oct. 1, Laem Chabang – Stableford
After Tuesday’s terrible rain, we were somewhat apprehensive as to quite
what Laem Chabang would have in store for us, a course which always
seems to attract the storms. Well, although there were plenty (of
storms) about we actually got away with it to enjoy a good day’s golf,
playing A & B for an overdue change; someone there is listening to us
about starting on C all the time.
LC member Sakorn beat the field with the day’s top score of 39pts to win
not only Div A but also the first 2015 Race2Bkk points, from Kim
Danboise, who beat Tony McDonough, both on 38.
Div B went to Brendan Cope (37) who has suddenly found his form just
ahead of the Chiang Rai & Chiang Mai tournament. John Mills was second
with 38pts, which followed his 45pts Tuesday at Waterside and Ed Turner
was third on 34.
We said goodbye to the Aussie group, John, Howard, Chris, Paul and Jim
and also to Ralph, Marek and Heiko.
There were seven ‘2’s – two from Sakorn A2 & A7 and one each from Ed
Turner (B5) and all the rest came on B8 - Kim Danboise, Tony Garnett,
Carl Luke, Tony McDonough and Marek Wernicke.
Div A (0-17)
1st Sakorn Pramoolchart (17) 39pts
2nd Kim Danboise (14) 38pts
3rd Tony McDonough (14) 38pts
Div B (18+)
1st Brendan Cope (28) 37pts
2nd John Mills (18) 36pts
3rd Ed Turner (20) 34pts
Friday, Oct. 3, St. Andrews – Stableford
Two or three of months ago, getting players to move across to St.
Andrews whenever Green Valley had a tournament was nigh on impossible,
they may even have preferred Silky Oak, but at long last after extensive
work this course has been restored to the condition expected from a
first class course.
32 players tried their hand at this good test of golf and fortunately
enough, everybody got round before this week’s series of storms arrived
yet again. Not so lucky at Siam Plantation or at the bar where we also
experienced our fourth afternoon power cut of more than one hour this
week.
Bob St. Aubin notched up a surprise win in Div A with 39pts, also the
day’s top score, beating Denny Pelly (37) and another familiar name on
the podium, Bob Finley (35).
Keith Allen recorded another win with just 33pts, taking Div B from
Usman Janjua, who beat John Stafford on c/b both on 32.
Greg Hill won Div C with 35pts ahead of Bob Mattes (32) and David Davies
(29). Suzi declined to return a score, no doubt saving her form for
Chiang Mai.
The only ‘2’ came from Usman Janjua and our thanks to first Bob St Aubin
and after Usman, both of whom rang the bell for the golfers. Thanks
guys.
Div A (0-13)

Flood delivers points
deluge at Eastern Star
Jomtien Golf with the IPGC
Karl Flood.
Monday, Sept. 29, The Emerald –
Stableford
This course is still improving and there were a few players who
had not been since the renovation had been completed but were impressed with
what they saw today.
36 points was the best score from Alan Bissell to win division 2 ahead of
Reijo Heiskanen in second on 33 while Chris Voller’s 33 points was enough to
claim the division 1 spoils, with Chris Slota taking second place one point
behind.
Chris Voller took nearest the pin prizes on the 5th and 15th and Alan
Bissell took the only one in division 2.
Wednesday, Oct. 1, Burapha – Stableford
Playing off 20 Reijo Heiskanen recorded his best score for many
years today, winning division 2 with 45 points. Willy Van Heetvelde was a
whopping twelve points behind in second and Bryan Priestley took third place
with 32.
There were three score cards returned with 33 points in division 1, and an
18/17/16 back-nine count back saw Chris Slota take first, Tony Bless second
and Chris Voller third.
Tony Bless (2) and Chris Voller shared the near pins in division 1 while in
division 2 Reijo, Andy Oz and Chris Slota notched 1 each.
Chris Voller birdied D8 for the only ‘2’ in the top flight while in division
2 Reijo birdied C5 and C8 and Chris Slota C8 to share the five rollovers.
Friday, Oct. 3,
Eastern Star – Stableford
Seven groups out today with the cut at 8-17 and playing off 15
Karl Flood scored 19 on the front nine and 25 on the back nine to record his
best score for many years, winning division 1 with an amazing 44 points.
Well done Karl! Bill Bertram was second with a ‘meagre’ 37 and Mikael
Andersson took third on 35.
Darryl Blair was the winner in division 2 with 36 points ahead of the
organizer in second on 35 and Reijo Heiskanen claimed third place with 34.
Ron Mathews and Chris Voller both recorded ‘2’s on the third while Reijo
birdied the 6th to be the only winner in division 2.
Near pins went to Karl Flood, Wilf Latham, Terry Madsen, Ron Mathews, Reiji
Heiskanen, Colin James and Karl Lang.

Greig signs off in style
Bunker Boys @ The Ranch
The John Preddy trophy.
Monday, Sept. 29, Pattana B & C –
Stableford
Upon registration at the Pattana clubhouse we were informed
that buggies were restricted to cart paths only, and when we assembled
on the first tee it was obvious that the ground was very soft from
recent heavy rain. We elected to play under winter rules from the longer
white tees and set off on the notorious B1 hole in sunny but
oppressively hot conditions.
The temperature and humidity were stifling for the first half dozen
holes and then the inevitable storm clouds began to build as we played
the closing holes on the outward nine. It seemed as though we heading
for another major downpour and the lightning alarm was duly sounded
causing our three groups to congregate in the water stop on the 10th
tee. Miraculously though, the storm passed us by and we were able to
recommence the round after a 15 minute refreshment stop, although it
appeared that the storm still had us completely surrounded.
The weather gods were smiling on us and even though the lightening was
not far away, no rain fell until a few drops on the closing couple of
holes (not worthy of raising an umbrella) and the round was completed in
cooler conditions to everyone’s relief.
With no run on the fairways, it was always going to be a day which
favoured the longer hitters, and Alan Freeman duly performed to take
first place with a great score of 36 points, given the difficult
conditions. Alan’s round included an impressive eagle three on the par
five C3 hole, where he holed his third shot from the greenside bunker.
The rest of the scores were forgettable, as the other mere mortals
struggled, and even the par three’s proved difficult with only two of
the four greens being hit, resulting in Colin Greig and Dave Keats
sharing the pot.
1st Alan Freeman (4) 36pts
2nd Gerry Keys (27) 30pts
3rd Geoff Parker (16) 27pts
Near Pins: Colin Greig and Dave Keats.
Wednesday, Oct. 1, Khao Keow A & C – Stableford
Even with some chaotic traffic due to the road works on the 7
motorway, we arrived at Khaow Keow in good time on a bright sunny
morning. Once again buggies were restricted to cat paths only, but the
condition of the fairways appeared to be OK so we decided to play under
normal rules and set off on the A nine a few minutes behind schedule.
The course was surprisingly busy and the pace of play on the outward
nine was particularly slow, but fortunately picked up on the inward
nine. Whilst the fairways and greens were in reasonable condition, the
rough hadn’t been cut for several days, and the ground was very soft
which severely punished any wayward shots.
Colin Greig started like an express train and was two under par after
the first five holes, unfortunately though he couldn’t keep it up, but
still managed to take first place with 34 points. Geoff Parker was a
point behind in second place and Alan Freeman took third place after
scoring 20 points on the front nine and then finding the water on three
separate holes on the back nine, yielding a disappointing 11 points.
1st Colin Greig (8) 34pts
2nd Geoff Parker (16) 33pts
3rd Alan Freeman (4) 31pts
Near Pins: Colin Greig, Chris Stephenson, Geoff Cox and Ken Young.
Friday, Oct. 3, Pattaya C.C. – Stableford
Fifteen golfers today for our competition at Pattaya Country
Club on another bright sunny morning. It’s been two months since we
played here last time, and it’s fair to say the course is improving, but
today the greens were bumpy and slow, particularly on the back nine.
As the leading group played the eighth hole a rogue thunder storm rolled
in and we ended up with all four groups huddled under the shelter on the
ninth tee for 30 minutes as the storm passed through. The greens dried
out very rapidly and although the fairways were flooded in places, the
course was perfectly playable immediately after the rain stopped.
Despite the tricky conditions Geoff Parker had his best round for quite
some time, coming in three points clear of the ever consistent Alan
Freeman, with Peter Habgood completing the podium in third place.
The near pin competition was particularly intense on the par 3 twelfth
hole with Tore Eliassen placing the initial marker about three feet from
the hole, only for Geoff Parker to get inside by about 9 inches, and
then Alan Freeman in the final group snatching the prize with his ball
finishing 6 inches from a hole in one.
Following the presentation back at The Ranch bar, Colin Greig was
presented with the Golfer of the Month trophy for September and duly
rang the bell on what was his final game before heading back to Scotland
for a winter break.
1st Geoff Parker (16) 39pts
2nd Alan Freeman (4) 36pts
3rd Peter Habgood (20) 30pts
Near Pins: Alan Freeman, Ken Young, Tony Robbins and Geoff Parker.
The 9th John Preddy charity golf tournament has been scheduled for
Monday 24th November at the Emerald Golf Club. The tournament has been
held for the last 8 years, but this year we are expanding the event to
remember those golfing friends in Pattaya who have passed away recently.
A new Memorial Trophy has been purchased which will be inscribed with
the names of those departed friends and will be held in the bar of the
winning team for one year.
The team event is intended to be an inter-society tournament including
as many local golf societies as possible. Full details can be found on
the website www.bunkersociety.com.
Note: The Bunker Boys play Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, so
if you enjoy a fun day out, and a friendly but competitive golf
competition why not come and join us. We meet at The Ranch on Pattaya
3rd Road at 9 a.m. and new players are always welcome. Contact “Buff” on
086 046 5091 or 080 605 5663 for all enquiries.
