Jack’s cruising atop Wed. Darts League
Jack’s Bar has put together an amazing 81% winning
percentage this season and stands well clear of the field in the Pattaya
Wednesday Night Darts League. With an 81 and 18 record, Jack’s is a full 14
games ahead of Mick’s Place 2 in the race for the championship of the
toughest league in town.
No doubt a large part of the reason for Jack’s good showing is that they
have managed to achieve 194 team tons so far this season. The figure leads
the league.
In individual categories, Su from Mick’s Place 1 leads the league with the
highest check out so far this season. Su managed to check out at 137. Pook
from Tippy’s 2 leads the league in two categories, most check outs (48), and
most individual tons (53).
Results from week 11: Jack’s romped over Tippy’s 1, 9 to 0 at home. Mick’s
Place 2 tried to keep pace with an 8 to 1 victory over Sweet Dream on the
road. Toi’s Place got on the winning track with a 6 to 3 triumph over
Londoner 1 away. Mick’s Place 1 defeated Londoner 2, 5 to 4 at home. Tippy’s
2 defeated Texxan Inn 5 to 4 away.

Beer Put starts new season atop standings
Beer Put has begun the new season of the Friday Night
Mickey Mouse Darts League with three straight wins. No strangers to winning
streaks, Beer Put has gained the early lead in the standings. Mick’s Place
is doing their best to keep pace, having won 2 out of 3, and are only one
game back in early stages of the season.
Rising Sun, meanwhile, who looked as though they would cruise to an
undefeated season on their way to capturing the championship last season,
have gotten off to an inauspicious start. Rising Sun has only won 1 of their
first three games.
Results from week 3: Beer Put won the match but lost the beer leg to
Pleasure Dome at home. Mick’s Place took the match and the beer leg from
Palmer’s on the road. Cheers handed the defending champs from Rising Sun a
match loss and a beer leg loss away.
Pattaya Sports Club at Bangpra
Bangpra was the venue for Pattaya Sports Club’s Thursday
competition. 22 golfers left Cafe Kronborg, all with the belief that today
they would master the tough Bangpra layout with greens that make Augusta
look slow. But only one returned (via the Butterfly Bar) having completed
the feat. Gez (The Cheese) Tracy, renowned for his ability at driving,
chipping, putting and general abuse of caddies, came in with 40 Stableford
points to clinch first place in the A Flight.
PSC Chairman Alec Chilcott came in second with a very respectable 34 points.
The rest became casualties to one of the hardest courses in the region.
“Bob Davis loves a beer” was the first not making it out of his house due to
a stiff neck acquired while on the driving range, and ‘not’ due to sitting
to close to the stage at TQ as malicious gossip would have us believe.
Bob Greenfield was next, having hit the turn at 6 under (not strokes under
his handicap, but bottles of Amarit under his belt). He was forced into the
clubhouse for a Kip.
Dave Richardson was forced out of contention after the par 3 12th. Having
put his first in the water, he ran out of pipe tobacco, bad luck Dave.
Martin Furzer was the final victim. Having made birdies at 4, 9 and 12, then
picking up an eagle at 14, he dropped his monkey at the next, leaving him
out of contention.
The final word went to our winner. When asked by our reporter the secret of
his success, he modestly replied, with a witticism only to be compared with
Oscar Wilde, Winston Churchill or Vinny Jones, “Gez is the name, golf is the
game”.
The Pattaya Sports Club would like to thank all the staff at Bangpra for an
enjoyable day. The PSC meets every Monday and Thursday at Cafe Kronborg.
Departure time is 8:15 a.m. Sign up early.

Gun fired in Wednesday Quiz
“Which country qualified for the World Cup after a zero-zero draw against
Poland?” “Which season begins with the vernal equinox?”
The starting pistol has been fired, and eight teams are coming round the
first bend of the Wednesday Quiz’s new season. Rising Sun and Britannia have
taken the lead, each with an impressive 99 marks out of 120. Next comes
Bob’s and Aussie Ken’s, followed by Palmer’s, Fawlty Towers and Cheers.
Shamrock did not field a team in week one.
Early indications are that the bars will have a competitive season with only
a handful of marks separating the top from the bottom. All the bars are
looking forward to the high season when trivial pursuits whiz-kids on
holiday will fill both numbers and points. You can join the fun by arriving
at any of the bars before 8:30 p.m.
Answers to the above questions are “England” and “Spring”.
Attention all fishermen
Not only are the local
denizens of the deep fun to catch, they make for great eating as well.

announced they will sponsor their next Deep Sea Fishing competition on
Monday, October 28, 1996.
Rules for the monthly tournaments are as follows: Each team captain will pay
an entrance fee of 600 baht to the Pattaya Sports Club. The entrance fee

board. Each team will be responsible for hiring their own boat. There will
be no limit on persons or tackle on board. Boats and crew may not leave
shore before 4:00 a.m., October 28. Weigh in for trophies will be at the
Fishing Lodge, Bang Saree, or the Marine Bar Pier, Pattaya, no later than
6:00 p.m., October 28.

weight), and 3) First Place Plaque for boat captain with the biggest fish.

Palmer’s looks un-catchable
Up to 1990, what has the highest score by one team been
in one game in the World Cup? (Look for the answer at the end of this write
up.)
Palmer’s has boosted their lead to 64 points now in the tough Sunday Night
Quiz League. With only a handful of contests to go, it appears as though the
master minds at Palmer’s should wrap up the championship well before the end
of the season.
What’s left is the race for the minor positions. Cheers seems to have a
pretty good hold on second place. They stand 36 points ahead of the surging
Pleasure Dome squad. Wild Chicken, meanwhile, has a secure lock on the
wooden spoon. The wild one’s are 191 points behind Bob’s for the bottom of
the league, and an amazing 395 points out of first place. It has to be some
sort of record.
Results from week 13: First place Palmer’s defeated last place Wild Chicken
79 to 62 in a mismatch. Pleasure Dome gained a bit on second place Cheers
with a 71 to 61 victory at home over the team they are trying to catch.
Fawlty Towers showed some spunk with a 76 to 73 home win over Rising Sun in
the race for fourth place. Mick’s Place triumphed over Viking Beachcomber 64
to 56 in a low scoring affair. Bob’s bar scored 75 points at home.
The answer to this week’s question; “Up to 1990, what has
the highest score by one team been in one game in the World Cup?” 10 by
Hungary in 1882 against El Salvador.
The public is invited to join the fun every Sunday night in the Quiz League.
Interested parties need only show up Sunday nights at 8:30 p.m. at the
venues listed n the Sports Roundup column of Pattaya Mail.

Jack’s starts new winning streak
Last season’s champions of the Pattaya Sports Club Darts
League are once again carrying on with their winning ways. Through the first
eight weeks of the season, Jack’s remains unbeaten.
Mick’s Place is nipping at their heals after having only lost one match so
far this season.
The sharp shooters from Texxan Inn must be getting quite thirsty by now.
They have yet to win a single beer leg in eight weeks.
Rod from Sports Corner is holding the highest check out so far this season.
Rod shot a double top, treble top, bull finish for a 150 check.
There has been 2 maximum 180 scores achieved so far. Jack from Jack’s Bar
and Kevin from Rising Sun have managed the feat. Kevin’s 180 capped off an
especially good night for he and his team. Not only did Kevin shoot a
perfect 180, his team won the match and took the beer leg over rivals
Pleasure Dome.
Harry Riley, PSC Darts Chairman, told Pattaya Mail that this league table
has been prepared with 4 results sheets missing. “As my psychic powers are
diminishing, I would like all the results delivered to the Pleasure Dome
within a couple of days after the match. In the future, when I prepare a
league table, I will have to assume a win for away teams for missing
results. The offending teams to date are: Sports Corner (2), Jack’s and
Tippy’s.”

Toi’s Place draws again
Toi’s Place has taken on the toughest teams in the
Pattaya Pool League and has so far managed to gain a draw twice. Their
propensity for the tie has positioned the team in second place, even though
they have only managed to actually win two of the seven games they have
played.
Sports Corner, meanwhile, has built a 9 point lead atop the standings. They
will have their work cut out for them, however, when they take on the always
tough Beer Put squad in week 9.
Results from week 8: Beer Put defeated Atmospher Club 8 to 4. Sports Corner
and Toi’s Place played to a 6 to 6 tie. Penthouse drew a bye.
TQ Masters returns
The third annual TQ Masters Tournament, one of the most
anticipated tournaments in the area, will be held at Pattaya Country Club on
Friday, October 18, 1996. This year it is being billed as the biggest and
best yet. Lower entrance fees, more prizes, plenty of mobile libations on
the course, T-shirt, hat, and buffet dinner in the clubhouse, with the
trophy award presentation to be held at TQ on Beach Road.
Once again, whomever finishes the day atop the leader board will be awarded
the coveted green jacket. This year, organizers will also award special
prizes for runner-up and technical winners, as well as “special” special
prizes for the other of end of the performance spectrum.
Early sign up is being encouraged. Deposits are being accepted by Wayne at
the Hare House on Soi Post Office, Graham at the Wild Chicken on Soi Post
Office, and Richard and Woody at TQ on Beach Road.
Dive Pattaya
by Bill Collis
Skin Diving/Snorkelling
The place to go is Koh Larn or Koh Suk. Both have clear water and lots
of fish. (One word of advice - don’t go on your own. The problems
reported in this paper regarding low level extortion and general
harassment by local touts on the islands are real.) All of the dive
shops in Pattaya offer half and full day packages for snorkelers that
will pick you up at your hotel, take you by boat to the best sites,
provide lunch, and return you to your hotel, all the while avoiding the
problems creating by the individual extortionists on the islands.
Scuba for Beginners
Everyone should experience Scuba diving at least once. Most dive shops
offer a Discover Scuba package which gives you an hour or so to
familiarise yourself with some of the basics of skin and scuba, followed
by a dive over the coral at Koh Suk or Koh Larn. SEAFARI is now offering
a discover Scuba package that gives you a free pool session followed the
next day by two dives on the islands - all closely accompanied by one of
their skilled instructors. The only limitations are that you must be
able to swim, be in reasonable health, and children must be age 12 or
over. Discounts are available for groups.
Learning Scuba/Open Water Certification
If you wish to obtain Open Water Certification that will allow you to
dive anywhere in the world, Pattaya offers world class training. We
would first suggest that you obtain certification through a dive shop
that provides training through one of the major certifiers (PADI, NAUI,
....), as this certification will be accepted world-wide. Second, you
should make sure that the shop’s instructors have a current
certification. Generally certification for new divers will take about 4
full days; two days of pool work (2 sessions/day) and two days of open
water diving (2 dives with lunch per day). SEAFARI and Dave’s Diver’s
Den offer packages that allow working people to do the course over three
or four weekends at their convenience. Cost for certification should be
about 9,000 baht (US$360) per diver. Along with the dives, this includes
all equipment, dive books, and usually a video. Compare this to the
average US cost of US$600-700 per person. Discounts are also generally
available for groups.
Remember, don’t miss out on one of the most fun and exciting things to
do in this area, DIVE PATTAYA!

9th Asian Open Veterans Tennis Championships
Princess Jotshana Basnyat
and Singha Basnyat from Nepal both took home trophies from the 9th Asian
Open Veterans’ Tennis Championship
The top story coming out of the 9th Asian Open
Veterans Tennis Championships at the Royal Cliff Beach Resort from
September 30 through October 6, 1996, had to be the great showing of
former two time Thai national men’s champion Pichet Boratisa.
Pichet showed that even in retirement, he can still hold his own against
good international competition. Pichet won two men’s singles titles in
two different age group categories.
Pichet first won the Men’s Singles over 45 title by defeating compatriot
Manit Kosolinsri 6-0, 6-3. Not satisfied with just one championship
trophy, Pichet suited up again, then went out and handily defeated
second seed Yanick Abree of Australia 6-0, 6-1, in the final match of
the Men’s Singles over 50 category. It took the sixth seeded Pichet less
than an hour to dispose of the higher ranked Aussie.
The true story of the tournament, however, was the camaraderie shared by
all those who participated. Although international veteran ranking
points were on the line, competitors displayed the best of
sportsmanship, as was evidenced by the addition to the event of the
“Fruit Bowl”. In this special event, teams (named after fruit) were put
together for “friendly” competition, and were made up of a mixture of
tennis players from all the different countries that took part in the
event. The “Banana” team met the “Mango” team in the finals.
The Royal Cliff Beach Resort, with support from the Tourism Authority of
Thailand (TAT) and private organizations, organized the 9th Asian Open
Veterans Tennis Championship 1996, with all matches being played on the
tennis courts of the Royal Cliff Beach Resort.

Andy Wellington captures Wild Chicken Medal
Andy Wellington, playing in the A flight, scored 39
Stableford points to win the Wild Chicken Monthly Medal competition in
conjunction with the Splinter Golf Group on Friday, October 4, 1996, at
Phoenix Country Club. Andy’s 39 points were just good enough to take the
title, but he needed a count back to overcome the 39 point effort of
Steve Ross in the B flight.
Wellington, despite his falling handicap, headed a strong field of
golfers on the soggy Phoenix course. Ross, meanwhile, has been runner up
in the last two successive Wild Chicken medals. Both his second place
finishes came after count back. Third time lucky?
Arthur Bailey fell just short of the top, falling behind the top two by
just one point to finish third overall. Last month’s winner, Paul Kraft,
just missed a successful defense of his title. Kraft finished just two
points back of the leaders.
Champion Wellington put together a remarkable round en route to his
title. Wellington shot a gross 1 over par 73 playing off his 4 handicap.
Two newcomers to Pattaya golf, Ed Rossenquost and Colin Willis, both
claimed third prizes in their respective flights.
Results of the Wild Chicken Monthly Medal:
A flight:
Andy Wellington 39 points
Paul Kraft 37 points
Ed Rossenquost 37 points (lost on count back)
B flight:
Steve Ross 39 points (lost overall title on count back to
Wellington)
Arthur Bailey 38 points
Colin Willis 32 points
