Doug’s Slugs take two

Two hotly contested games played by the Pattaya Sports Club softball section on February 2 resulted in Doug’s Slugs downing Rick’s Fab 10 in both games.
Rick’s Fab 10, sparked by homers from Kenny T.D. and Dick Cagg in the 3rd and 4th innings, took a comfortable 6 - 1 lead after 4. A triple by Hoser in the bottom of the sixth started the Slugs’ comeback. Kenny T.D., troubled with an injury, caused a defensive gap in left field which the Slugs took advantage of.

Doug’s Slugs 1 0 0 0 2 4 x 7
In the second game, the Slugs got off to an 8 - 0 lead. The Fabs came back to tie the game at 8 - 8 in the fourth, and again at 10 - 10 in the fifth. Hoser hit his second and third 3 baggers of the day to the cheers of the standing crowd. Also pounding the ball for the Slugs were Jerry Caltex, George Davis, and Alan Rutsky, all constantly finding the soft underbelly of the Fabs’ left field.

Pattaya Sports Club Golf

Green Valley, January 27, 1997
A four ball better ball, identical to one of the Ryder Cup formats, attracted a large entry on a cloudy but breezy day. Everyone chose his or her partner in a Stableford format. This form of tourney always results in high scores, particularly with superb greens as on this day.
Terry Dalton and “Steady” Freddy Lewis came in with a creditable 43 points in third place. Daphne from Perth and Brendon “our man from Dublin” returned a 44 points and were counting their chickens, alas not to hatch, and came second to Sven “the Viking” Vistung and George Zahorsky, “the poor man’s Pete Sampras” in first place with a massive 47 points which was greeted with some incredulity by the assembled throng.
Baldwin Johannsen, Pete Daff, and Rich Schramm gained nearest the pin prizes as did Alex Rose who also claimed the long drive. Bill Davis and Simon Irvine took the long putts on 9 and 18.
Alec returned to the nineteenth hole, the Cafe Kronborg, to hear the bell ring but to no avail.
Siam Country Club, January 30, 1997
As a testimony to the difficulty of Siam Country Club, only 3 players out of a field of 66 played better than their handicap. There were no excuses for the course was in better condition than of late and the weather was glorious.
A master of consistency, Sven Vistung shone once again in A flight with a net 70. Jim Watson was on 73 and second on count back to Paul Kraft third.
Andy Anderson, a long time member and one of our most popular characters whose golf has been somewhat in the doldrums of late, showed a great return to form by winning B flight with a creditable net 70. Close on his heels in second place with net 71 came Kris Helgason, who spends 4 months a year with us from the rigors of the Iceland climate. Third was Michael Franklin on 72.
The scratch prize was won by Mauno Polari with a gross 83.
Robin Lennon, one of our Scots contingent, won the long drive. Johan Reynison, Bob Greenfield, Victor Chance, and Rick Schram won nearest pins, and Bob Davis and Robin Lennon won the long putts.
Please note that apart from the usual tournaments every Monday and Thursday, we are now playing a monthly medal round on the last Friday of every month.

Beer Put secures Mickey Mouse Championship

With only one week to go, Beer Put has secured the Friday Night Mickey Mouse Darts League Championship. Beer Put has yet to lose a match this season, extending their streak to 10 straight over two seasons. Cheers, who is battling for a second place finish, is the only team left that stands in the way of a perfect season for Beer Put.
In that battle for second, Rising Sun and Mick’s Place have the inside track. Both are playing teams at the bottom of the table in the final match, meaning a tie is likely. Rising Sun has the advantage in tie breakers, with 7 beer legs won and 60 under tens, to 2 and 45 respectively for Mick’s Place.
Results from week 9: Rising Sun won the match and the beer leg over Cheers away. Mick’s Place won the match but lost the beer leg to Palmer’s at home. Beer Put won the match and the beer leg over Pleasure Dome at home.
Nervous Dave from Rising Sun held the league lead for highest check out all season, but was finally surpassed by Lorenzo from Cheers in the penultimate week. Lorenzo checked out with 117 to gain the top spot.

Wednesday Quiz recalls the Lusitania

“What is the subtitle of the movie Omen Three, last of the series?” “In which century was the first successful parachute jump?”
The new season of the mid week trivial pursuits league started in good style. Last season’s winners, Bob’s ale house, obtained the highest score of 91/120. Fawlty Towers, Cheers and Shamrock also won their matches. Under the reformed scoring system, teams get three points for a win, two for a draw and one for a loss.
There were some heated discussions about how many torpedoes sank the Lusitania in May 1915. Two loud explosions were heard, but the second one came from exploding coal dust in the bunkers. The correct answer is one torpedo. Marine archaeologists have proved that most of the damage to the doomed liner’s plates were caused by an interior explosion.
Meanwhile, the Sunday Quiz is nearing the end of its season. Cheers and Palmer’s are battling it out in a neck and neck finish.
Answers to the above questions are “The Final Conflict” and “eighteenth century”.
Newcomers are welcome and need only turn up at the listed bars Sunday or Wednesday just before 8:30 p.m.

Archie gains first Pattaya Golf Society victory

Archie Nicholson wins his first title. (file photo).

Archie Nicholson put together the round of his life to win his first ever Pattaya Golf Society title on Tuesday, January 28, 1997 at Pattaya Country Club. Archie shot a gross 102 off his previously secure 36 handicap to finish the day 6 under par net.
Asked how he managed to win his first tournament, Archie told Pattaya Mail, “First, you take a one hour lesson from (PGA Pro) Richard L. the day before. Then, you get up at 4:30 a.m. the morning of the tournament, take a taxi to Asia Pattaya, jump the fence, and while its still dark, you begin to practice what you learned the day before. Two hours later, its back home for breakfast and transport to First House. Then, (during the round) you play with better golfers, Billy Young and Herbie.” Archie finished by saying, “I give all the credit to Richard”.
On a day that saw high handicappers rule (three of the top four had at least 35 handicaps), the shot of the day came from William Rice (35 hcp). On the 10th, William sank a 70 foot putt, prompting his playing partner, Billy Russel, to comment, “I thought my 40 footer was something, but he almost doubled it!”
Les Winch shot a 103 off his 35 handicap to finish second with a 4 under par net. Roy Mitchell shot a scratch 94 off his 25 handicap to finish third at 3 under par net. William Rice rode his long putt to a fourth place finish at 1 under par net. George Meigh rounded out the top five with an even par net.
Nearest to the pin honors, with complimentary green fees provided by Pattaya Country Club management as prizes, went to Peter Johannson on #7 and Roy Mitchell on #12.
The Pattaya Golf Society “Player of the Month” award went to Ken Carr after he finished the four rounds in January at even par. His title didn’t come without a struggle, however. Carr started the day nine shots ahead of Roy Mitchell and 13 ahead of John Gibson, and the three made up the final group. Roy Mitchell kept the pressure on all day, gaining ground all the way. It wasn’t until the final hole before the title was settled. With Roy climbing up his back, Ken needed to hole an eight foot putt for a par on the 18th to win. Although the pressure must have been immense, Ken was able to hole the putt for a one stroke victory.

PSC Bowling awards

Last week’s winners Tiew and Ken (back) celebrate their winnings with PSC bowling chairwoman La.

The Pattaya Sports Club Bowling League has instituted a new awards program as a way of giving something back to the people who participate. Each week the “Top Bowler of the Day” will receive prizes from the league. Awards will go to bowlers who produce such outstanding performances as high game or high series of the week, including handicap.
On Friday, January 31, Tiew took home top honors for high series/women, with a solid 604. Ken Crow also received accolades for high series/men with an equally solid 605.
Anyone interested in bowling with the Pattaya Sports Club league is invited to join the fun on Fridays at 1:30 p.m. at Pattaya Bowl in North Pattaya. Just see La.

Improve your Bridge

by Barrie Kenyon

My grandmother, who was the terror of Wigan bridge club in the 1960s, always said you should never take a finesse if you can possibly avoid it. Brandishing her stick, she would lecture her unfortunate partners about the foolishness of relying on fifty percent chances. In twenty years, no-one ever succeeded in contradicting grandmother. She was stone deaf.
Actually she had a point. Recently, Hungry Horace, known for his irritating habit of munching sandwiches during play, opened One No Trump (16-18 points) between mouthfuls. He was sitting South and was pleased to hear his partner North reply Three No Trumps. Opponent West led a small Club and North, the dummy, displayed:
Spades 6, 4 ,3
Hearts Ace, 8 ,7
Diamonds Ace, King, Jack, 10
Clubs 8, 7 ,6
Declarer Horace examined his own hand which, together with the dummy, provided twenty eight points in the combined hands. This should be a walkover. Horace held:
Spades Ace, King, Queen
Hearts King, 5 ,4
Diamonds 7, 4, 3, 2
Clubs King, Jack, 2
The West opponent led a small club, dummy followed, East contributed the Ten and Horace covered with the Jack. He could see eight top tricks and needed to find the missing Queen of Diamonds to make the contract. At trick two, Horace led a small diamond from hand, West played low and Horace finessed dummy’s Jack. Curtains: East pounced with the Queen and returned a small Club. Horace, with more hope than expectation, rose with the King which lost to the enemy Ace. The opposition altogether cashed four Spade tricks and the Queen of Diamonds. One down. Horace ordered another plate of sandwiches, the consolation prize of the defeated.
Horace’s mistake was to finesse in Diamonds and allow East to make that devastating Club return. His best play is to cash Ace and King of Diamonds and hope that the Queen drops. If it does, he is home and dry. If not, he is still safe provided West holds the Queen because the Spade King and 2 still provide a stop. If East has three Diamonds to the Queen, the contract will fail anyway.
As grandmother warned, Horace’s line of play gave him a fifty percent chance of success. The alternative suggested above would improve his chance to around eighty percent. And bridge is mainly about statistics.

PSC 1996 Grand Champion Fishing Tournament

Dieter Jahoda with his winning 22 kilo Black Tip Shark.

Dieter Jahoda was crowned champion of the Pattaya Sports Club 1996 Grand Champion Deep Sea Fishing Tournament held Saturday and Sunday, January 25 & 26, 1997. Jahoda, fishing with the Hogs Breath anglers, landed a 22 kilo Black Tip Shark to earn first place.
Carl Engel, fishing with the Bull Ring team, came in second place after landing a 7 kilo Cobia.
There was a good turn out with five boats and twenty fishermen and women participating in this championship tournament. A total of 77 kilo of fish, including Snapper, Barracuda, Mackerel, Cobia, and Tuna were landed.
As PSC fishing chairman Carl Engel put it, “The most exciting part was the ones that got away. I had a 30 kilo Black Marlin on the line for 20 minutes before it got away, and Selwyn Leightly had a 20 kilo Black Marlin on the line for 40 minutes before it got away. We have photos of the Marlin on the line for proof. But the ones that got away and photos don’t win tourna-ments.”

Low Scores in TAGGS Hare House Scramble

With tournament officials giving a liberal 40% of each team’s combined handicap, low scores were the rule of the day in The Alternative Golf Gentlemen’s Society Hare House Scramble at Khao Kheow, Wednesday, January 29, 1997.
Derek Reaper, Matt Miller and Serge “Harley” proved the team to beat. The threesome put together 3 birdies and 3 bogies, parring the rest of the way to turn in a gross 72 off their 29.2 handicap to take the title.
Paul Kraft, Charlie Davlin, Jerry Lien and Dene Munday shot a better overall gross (64), but due to their lower handicap, were relegated to second place. Their round wasn’t without incident, however. On the 2nd hole of the B course, Jerry Lien sliced his drive over to the adjoining fairway, striking Vic Cross squarely in the chest. Fore was called, unfortunately into a strong wind, meaning Vic didn’t hear the warning. As a result, Jerry incurred a 2 beer penalty. Vic was last seen looking for “a good attorney”.
Steve Beard, Woody Underwood, Patrick Asklund and Vic Cross tied for third, although Jerry Lien’s early strategic ploy took Vic out of his game early on. Mullis, Jan and Bellan also tied for third.
Fifth place overall, but tied for the best scratch score with Kraft, Lien, Davlin and Munday, was the foursome of Jonas, Dave, Ken, and Mattiss. The latter foursome started par, eagle, and 4 birdies for a 6 under par gross after the first six holes of the tournament. They then parred each of the next 10, and finished with 2 birdies for a gross 64.
In all, 25 golfers turned out for the tournament and were treated to superb conditions at Khao Kheow. Of the 25 golfers, the shot of the day came from Cameron Randford on #18 of the B course. Cameron’s massive 260 yard drive landed in a fairway bunker, leaving him with 120 yards to the pin. His was also the only playable drive of his foursome. Cameron hit his second shot just a little too cleanly, causing his ball to exit the bunker like an exo-@*#%-set missile, heading toward the water 10 yards left of the green. The ball pitched just short, hit a rock, careened 90° to the right, hopped on the front edge on the green, lipped out, and finished 12 inches from the hole.
The next TAGGS tourney will be a better ball pairs medal on Wednesday, February 5. Venue to be announced.
