The Pattaya International Ladies Club - What’s it all about?

New President of the PILC, Jo Hall
(with glasses) enjoys the fellowship with club members at the February luncheon
in the Moon River Pub.
The Pattaya International Ladies Club started in the late
1960s when just a few ex-pat ladies met for informal meetings and social
gatherings at the Nipa Lodge - the only hotel in Pattaya then. With the arrival
of a larger number of ex-pats to the community in the 1980s, the club was
formally established with a committee organising luncheons, activities and fund
raising for local charities.
Membership for this year is currently 146 ladies from all over the world,
including Thailand, and more ladies are arriving in the area as the work at
Map-ta-phut and Laem Chabang industrial estates is on the increase.
Activities range from all kinds of sport, cultural outings and seminars,
shopping trips and visits to markets and factories. There is a monthly luncheon
held the 1st Tuesday of the month at different hotels and a coffee morning on
the 2nd Tuesday of the month.
Raising money for various local charities is a high priority area and the
Welfare Committee is very active in this area. Each month at the luncheon a
raffle is held to raise money for the Welfare Fund. In 1996 many charities
benefited from the help of the PILC, the Fountain of Life, Eastern Child Welfare
Protection Institution (Huey-pong Home), YWCA, Drug Treatment Centre, 2 Pattaya
schools, just to name a few, but there are many projects that are ongoing and
also some new ones planned for 1997. So, PILC is not just a club for member’s
enjoyment - just by being a member you are helping others.
A monthly newsletter is sent to all members containing information about all the
activities, outings, welfare reports, forthcoming luncheon details, articles
from members, for sale and wanted columns, and adverts from local businesses.
The elected committee members work very hard to ensure all members enjoy the
club and invite guest speakers to the luncheons to talk about various and
interesting subjects. The more diverse the membership, the more interesting and
educational the PILC will become by the participation of members in club
activities. The PILC is often the first contact that many newly arrived members
have to the local and ex-pat community - and for some, a much needed lifeline in
this strange but wonderful country.
PILC February luncheon:
The 1997 committee hosted their 1st luncheon at the Moon River Pub, Thai Garden
Resort earlier this month. The theme being the Chinese New Year, more than 80
ladies attended and were all given a synopsis of the year of their birth,
followed by fortune cookies and a video showing the Chinese Lion Dance Troupe.
An excellent buffet lunch had been arranged by Michael and Marion and PILC would
like to say “thank you” to both for all the hard work and support of the ladies’
club throughout the year. Also thanks for the donations to the charity raffle.
Next month’s luncheon will be held at the Royal Garden Resort and the theme will
be “colours” so come dressed in your most colourful outfit and find out how you
can use colours to your best advantage.

Rotary Club of Jomtien/Pattaya celebrates 10th Anniversary
Tons of Fun for All at the Rotary Club of Jomtien-Pattaya
10th Anniversary Fun-Fair.
The park of the Royal Cliff Beach Resort will be the site of the 10th
anniversary celebration of the Rotary Club of Jomtien-Pattaya.
The men and women of Rotary are just as adept at madcap and zany fun as they
are at helping society.
As this year marks the 10th anniversary of the Jomtien-Pattaya Chapter,
Rotarians thought it would be a good opportunity to provide a wild carnival
atmosphere and rake in lots of money for charity at the same time.
The fair’s basic idea is the same as that of the old-fashioned ‘country
fairs’ that most Americans have enjoyed during childhood.
The Celebration Fair will include games of skill, games of chance and prizes
galore. There will also be rivers of drink and mountains of food.
Rotarians, who are always up for a party after doing their tiring but
rewarding charity work are waiting to show you that they are the ‘hosts with
the most’.
This being a rotary event, all proceeds will of course go to charity.
No 10,000 baht a plate charity dinner this, though. The fair is designed for
maximum fun at fun prices. The food and drink will be in the 20-80 baht
range.
There will also be a lucky draw with prizes that you have only imagined in
your dreams. It would be unfair to reveal them here.
Don’t be a grinch. Give the Rotary Club of Jomtien-Pattaya’s 11th year a
great beginning while helping charity at the same time.
