Jan O’Brian: origi-nally from England but moved later with
her American hus-band to the USA.
Husband: Steve.
Children: None.
Present address: Royal Cliff Garden Condominium.
Occupation: Cur-rently a house-wife, in England she was Technical Direc-tor,
Sound Engineer and Studio Manager - all for BBC World-Service. In the USA she
was a jewelry designer.
Hobby’s: All cultural activi-ties; reading - mainly about Asian culture in
general; creative cooking - normal stuff is to boring for her; lectures at
national museums and not to forget her former occupation: jewelry designing and
creating, enameling, metal-smiting which includes all the beautiful wall-pieces
hanging in her flat. Strolling around all handicraft markets and shops to get
more ideas from different ethnic-groups.
Sports: Aerobics, sailing, scuba diving, hiking and snow-skiing.
Stay in Pattaya: Since three years and for sure another year or two.
Plans for future traveling: Her first choice would be Indonesia and second South
America to look at all the historic places there.
What she likes about Pattaya:
Living next to the sea, the view from her flat, the still tropical environment,
the magical trips to the nearby orchid farm, sailing at their yacht club and
laying on the beach, Thai food, Pattaya being like a center - all places can be
reached within a short time, the smiles and the friendliness of Thai people, the
way how some people will cheat you for a few baht in the most charming way.
What she doesn’t like about Pattaya:
The lack of cultural and intellectual stimu-lation, bad smell from rotting
garbage on the side of the streets, broken down streets, the many areas of still
polluted sea and beaches, rude baht-bus drivers, blazed sex-scene, tourists who
don’t behave the way they should.
What she thinks about life in general in Pattaya:
“I like the extreme chal-lenge of living here. When I arrived three years ago, I
was quite shocked. Now, I’ve gotten used to it. What’s still very saddening is
seeing young Thai girls coming from the North, being generally nice persons, but
becoming hard and tough by working in the sex-trade. Otherwise, life is very
nice here. I can go anywhere without being bothered, neither by sales people nor
by sex-hungry men. I really hope my husband is able to extend his contract to
give us the chance to stay here much longer.
