A visit to the Spaghetti Factory
(There is more to it than only noodles)
Friendly staff are eager to serve
delicious Italian food at the Spaghetti Factory on the corner of Beach Road and
Soi Post Office.
by Ariyada
The idea of opening a restaurant called the Spaghetti Factory
came to Pino, one of the four owners (three Farangs, one Thai), during a
vacation back in Switzerland. He realized that most Farangs would balk at the
idea of going to a Farang place in Pattaya to eat Thai food, opting instead for
Farang food. From this thought, the Spaghetti Factory was born, opening its
doors for the first time 15 December 1993.
Located on the corner of Beach Road and Soi Post Office, the Spaghetti Factory
is an open-air restaurant decorated with original paintings of Van Klimt. Tables
of all sizes are arranged between pillars with mosaic-work. Several hundred
fairy lights illuminate the cozy ambiance. A huge pizza kitchen, directly at the
entrance, also with mosaic-work, gives it a bit of an Italian touch.
My companion and I chose a Salad Sicily and an Antipasto (mixed Salami platter)
as an entree from the wide ranging menu. Although Cordon Bleu and BBQ might be
the favorites, 4 different entrees, 5 kinds of salad, 9 spaghetti-dishes, penne
in 4 variations, 3 various tagliatelle, 12 freshly prepared pizzas and finally 5
delicious desserts are also available. By the way, breakfast is available as
well since 12 apartments are attached for tourists.
We chose Italian dressing for our salad and it had just the right taste. The
salami platter was hearty and we had to rest a bit before going on to order some
more.
Finally, we decided to try Tagliatelle Boscaiola (cream-sauce of tomatoes, ham
and mushrooms), Spaghetti Carbonara (my favorite, whenever I talk about Italian
food I think of Carbonara), Spaghetti Al Pesto (with green basilica sauce - the
basilica imported from Switzerland for better taste), Spaghetti Nicotera (a
delicious mixture of veal, cream and edible mushrooms picked by Pinos wife,
Took, in Switzerland). All noodles were cooked to perfection, very delicious,
but very filling. It took Pino at least five minutes to convince me to try
Zabaione with ice cream, (you might have realized my sweet tooth already), a
typical Italian dessert. It’s based on eggs and cognac made into a kind of
mousse. Martin, one of the other owners, told me it should perform miracles on
tired men.
To round up this perfect dining out, Pino ordered a four season pizza. Delicious
and crispy, yet I still could only try one more bite for any more would have
been impossible. Martin, Pino and my companion finished it in no time - I still
wonder where it went.
To eat Spaghetti or Pizza of all kinds, the Spaghetti Factory comes highly
recommended. You can find it on the corner of Beach Road and Soi Post Office.

Recipe
Take half a kilo of ground pork and mix it with:
two or three very finely shred kaffir lime leaves (Bai Makrut)
Pound in a mortar:
A small piece of galangar (Kah, ginger family);
A bit of dried powdered bird chilli (Prik Kee Noo Heng);
A stalk of lemon grass, finely shredded;
A teaspoon of toasted cashew nuts;
A small piece of toasted shrimp paste (Kapi);
Half a teaspoon of sugar;
Salt or fish sauce (Nam Plah) to taste.
Mix this with the pork and stuff this in some pig’s casing which you
must order from the market or if this is too difficult make small
parcels of it wrapped in banana leaves. The sausages are grilled very
slowly in an oven or over a fire. In fact they are more or less dried.
The banana leaf parcels may be steamed and afterwards, just before
eating, them toasted over charcoal to give them the unique flavour of
burned banana leaves.
