Enjoying the changes for the better
Editor;
The following is a very pleasant experience about Thailand - I believe an excellent point for other beach areas to note for improving tourist & Thai enjoyment.
I just returned from the beautiful beach at Jomtien. What a dramatic change for the better from three years ago! The sand is raked & swept clean every morning. Ample large trash containers abound. At the rented beach chair/table/umbrella sites, smaller "trash baskets" are provided for each table. Their use was encouraged. The area "rental" people promptly picked up any trash dropped by thoughtless tourists or Thai vacationers. As soon as a group departed - their table & area was promptly cleaned up - no trash, bottles, cigarette butts, etc. to litter and blow around the beach.
The beach was packed - as it should be because the water and beach were sparkling clean. I recall how sad it was a few years ago to witness the garbage increasing at Pattaya, Cha Am and Phuk Dian, to name a few. If other Thai beaches are cleaned up and maintained like Jomtien, Thailand will experience an increasing surge in of tourists. I know we already tell everyone to go here now. With the new road, it’s only about 5-10 minutes from Pattaya.
Another interesting point - I dropped a large piece of chicken onto the sand. Brushing it off, I set out to feed it to one of the ever present/ever hungry Thai Dogs. Guess what? There were no dogs! Amazing Indeed! (An occasional dog does slink through with its ears down, but its evident they know they can’t "hang out" at the beach until dusk.)
The Jomtien area is also much more active now with plenty of Baht Busses, large & small restaurants, supermarkets, 7-11’s and decent nightly hotels from the cheap end (250-500 Baht) on up to luxury. Plenty of food, drink and even newspapers are available from the vendors, too. Though evidently the vendors are not supposed to come down onto the beach - as evident by their mass scramble when the police are near! Eventually some more safety law/enforcement will be required as a number of jet ski’s and power boats are among the swimmers all too often.
In conclusion - congratulations to Jomtien, it’s citizens, local government and beach workers! Congratulations to Amazing Thailand!
So let’s print some of the good work - it’s nice to let people know when something they do good is noticed and appreciated, too.
From Khun Bill Tode

Should we be the “Fattaya Mail”?
Dear Sir,
After reading "How to spell our name" in the Pattaya Mail of 24th July, 1998, I came up with this solution:
I am not a Philologist, nor a Linguistic, but in English fluent I am. My Thai is absurd. Most Sanskrit unheard, yet of "PH" sound I slam. In every dictionary, "PH" is popularly read with "F" pronounced sound. Thus phonetically and universally "Fattaya" can be renowned. Some use a Farynx to utter a Frase, but to me the Fenomenom will be a Fase. If an F is used instead of PH, so many less letters needed. Thus in this economical stage, we are thrifty and save, but become seeded.
Better late than never - "Best wishes to Fattaya Mail and the staff for the 5th anniversary. May the world continue to enjoy reading the Fattaya Mail for umpteen more years."
Yours Sincerely,
"Blatherer"

Editor:
In the "Designer Clothes" letter (Vol. VI No. 32, 7 August 98), the writer appears to have answered his own question (Are they genuine or fake?) by quoting the price paid versus the cost of the merchandise in Canada. It has been my observation that the quality of designer clothes purchased in the Kingdom is reproduced as faithfully as the designer labels.
Another Pattaya and Pattaya Mail Fan,

Dear Ed,
Further to your reply in last week’s issue concerning your change of Logo, the staff and customers at Jit’s Place rose to the challenge and willingly donned their thinking caps in an attempt to identify any subtle changes previously missed.
After a lengthy brainstorming session which was somewhat akin to a full blown quiz night, 2 other changes were noted - namely; the grey background to the lettering below the Pattaya Mail Logo and the transposition and additions to the wording on this background.
At the conclusion of this grueling session, it was generally agreed that, in a changing world, one of the few things you can still be sure of are the generous portions and the value for money of Jit’s Fish & Chips!
Sorry for another plug, but our intention is simply to raise a smile. Good luck for the future and we promise now to close this correspondence so that space can be allotted to more serious matters.
Yours Sincerely,
Nevill
Editor’s reply: Thanks for taking the time to notice some of the changes. However, you missed about a half dozen, although I admit some are quite subtle. By the way, the staff here at Pattaya Mail does love your fish & chips!
