Winning week for Brothers Clare
PSC TAGGS golf from the Hare House
Wednesday, August 12 - Pattaya Country Club (Pairs Medal)
1st: Peter Clare and Malcolm Clare, 55 net
2nd: Jonas Bergstrom and Joachim Hansson, 59 net
3rd: Ronnie Glaister and Harry Riley, 64 netThe term " brother in law" is used in better ball to describe the play of a pair that never do badly on the same hole. They "brother in lawed" the course. Brothers Malcolm and Peter Clare have obviously coined a new phrase as they shot a fantastic 17 under par in the Pairs Medal competition at Pattaya Country Club on Wednesday. They "brothered" this course to its knees and clobbered the field for a net 55 and a new TAGGS Pairs Medal record. It would take a great score to win on this day, as of the eleven teams competing, seven would overcome the pathetic Pattaya Country Club greens and shoot under par. But "under par" doesn’t quite describe what the Clare brothers did. They were twelve under par after the first nine holes!
Finishing second with a score that would normally be a cinch to win was the Swedish duo of Jonas Bergstrom and Joachim Hansson. Having a ball and enriching the Pattaya Country Club concession stands (and probably leaving them short of Singha) this team shot 13 under par and still lost by 4 strokes. Feeling no pressure, the only persons on the course looser than these two were their caddies who fell asleep at the long wait on the sixteenth tee.
Yet another brother combination of Dennis and Larry Willett had a fine score of 64 but lost out third place in a count back to the team of Harry Riley and Ronnie Glaister. This was Harry’s birthday bash and he celebrated with a great effort on the course and afterwards at a Mexican buffet provided by the Hare House. One of the highlights of the party was the serenade by Jonas and Joachim who sang Happy Birthday to Harry in what was thought to be Swedish.
Friday, August 14 - Great Lake Golf & Country Club (Stableford)
1st: Peter Clare, 37 points
2nd: Carl Baumann, 36 points
3rd: Lewis Underwood, 33 pointsPeter Clare brought home 37 points and took the first place TAGGS trophy in the weekly Stableford competition Friday at Great Lake. It capped a fairytale week for the Brothers Clare. Malcolm Clare took second place in Division II at the Las Vegas Open the week before. And on Wednesday, the two brothers paired up to win the Better Ball competition at Pattaya Country Club.
In second place with 36 points was Carl Baumann who needed his long drives on the Great Lake course that had the white tees back almost to the blues. Carl’s game is as steady as his demeanor and he quietly went about his business in shooting even par.
Long time Hare House regular Woody Underwood took third place with 33 points on a day when 33 points was a good score. Woody overcame such obstacles as taking over an hour to get to the course. He swears he wasn’t lost and the Insect Bar isn’t open that early. His foursome rushed up to the first hole only to watch in agony as a novice golfer playing with his father took seven shots to get out of range of the first tees. A quick trip to the tenth tee solved that problem and put off the hellish fourth hole for at least a couple of hours.
