David Davey captures Thai-Ger tournament

David Davey went out in less-than-ideal conditions and managed to equal the low round of his career, finishing with 42 Stableford points to win the Thai-Ger Line Golf Tournament played at Pattaya Country Club on Saturday, October 10.

David boomed long drives (with clubs bought at the Thai-Ger shop, by the way) while negotiating the soggy conditions to card a scratch 84, net 66 to win by 6 strokes.

“The other day I lost every hole in a skins match with a local,” David mused over the ups and downs of the game of golf. “Today I was on.”

Stefan Khun came down from Bangkok for the tournament and equaled his handicap, shooting a scratch 100, net 72 for 36 Stableford points and a second place finish. Stefan was later seen schmoozing a local Austrian woman, attempting to teach her how to swing a golf club on the Thai-Ger inside driving range.

Cathrin and Tip each finished the day with 30 Stableford points for joint third place.

“I just wanted to treat the local golfing community to a game of golf and introduce them to my shop,” Managing Director of Thai-Ger Line Golf Carl-Fabian Arp told Pattaya Mail.

After the tournament, local golfers were treated to cold Carlsberg on tap and a delicious suckling pig at the Thai-Ger shop on Soi Chaiyapoon. Warm food after a wet day on the golf course - it doesn’t get much better.

First Charity Mini-Golf Challenge

The First Charity Mini-Golf Challenge will be held from 1 to 8 November at Fairplay Mini-Golf, Thappaya Road.

20,000 baht in prizes will be up for grabs with categories for ladies, gentlemen, and children, for the purpose of raising funds for the Louis Fassbind Foundation, Pattaya Orphanage, and various local charities.

The tournament will be hosted by the Rotary Club of Jomtien Pattaya and concerned local businesses, in cooperation with Echo du Siam, Der Farang, Pattaya Mail, Ferien Magazin, Jesters MC, Pattaya Sports Club, and PILC. All sponsorship & donations welcome.

How it started

As with many great ideas, this one also started at a bar counter where French, Swiss and Belgian local business people gathered after a game of mini-golf. The topic was the poor, the handicapped, the homeless, and the orphans in and around Pattaya, and the necessity to help the charity organizations that take care of these people. Fairplay proposed the free use of the Mini-Golf for this fund raising action and the base was laid for the Charity Mini-Golf Challenge. Help was found with the Rotary Club of Jomtien Pattaya and soon many other businesses and clubs joined.

The Aims

The main aim of the “Challenge” is to generate funds for local community charities such as the Pattaya Orphanage, the Louis Fassbind Foundation and many other small local charity organizations to support their good work. The Rotary Club of Jomtien Pattaya will oversee the fair distribution of funds to the various charities.

The Target

The target of the “Mini-Golf Challenge” is to generate Baht 250,000 and more. This goal can only be reached with all of you helping and supporting this event.

How can you help?

a. By becoming one of the head-sponsors (6 meter banner + money-prize)
b. By sponsoring, privately or through your company, a banner at one of the 18 holes.
c. By giving some prizes for the Charity Raffle.
d. By helping to promote the first “Charity Mini-Golf Challenge”.
e. By participating in the Mini-Golf Challenge and bringing many friends along.
f. By volunteering to be a judge during the Mini-Golf tournament.

How does it work?

Every Mini-Golf competitor has to play 4 rounds of 18 holes during the period of 1 to 8 November (children 8-11 years - 2 rounds, and 12-15 years - 3 rounds), where all points are added to get the final score results. A judge will mark the score of all players. Unlucky holes (with too many strokes) can immediately be replayed against a payment of a “Joker” (Mulligan). A player can buy a maximum of 18 Jokers over the whole competition (10 for children 8-11 and 14 for children 12-15). Jokers are sold by book of 3. A book of 3 Jokers costs 200 baht before starting, 300 baht during the first round, 400 baht during the 2nd round, 500 baht during the 3rd round and a final price of 600 baht during the 4th and final round. The presentation of prizes and the raffle-draw will take place on Sunday 8 November at 17:00 (5:00 p.m.). The tickets for the Charity Mini-golf Challenge are sold at 500 baht for adults, 200 baht for children 8-11 and 300 baht for children 12-15.

England 1 Scotland 0

PSC Splinter Golf Group

Mon. 5th Oct., Laem Chabang (Stableford)

1st Stan Fry -39 pts
2nd Andy Wellington - 38 pts
3rd Steve Ross - 38 pts

In a very slow played round Stan Fry just managed to edge out the resurgent Andy Wellington, who just beat Steve Ross on count back in an otherwise miserable day at Laem Chabang.

Fri 9th Oct, Khao Kheow (stoke play)

1st Stan Fry - net 71
2nd Dick Holt - net 71
3rd Andy Wellington - net 72

On another wet miserable day Stan Fry again mastered the conditions to play superb golf, although he was pushed hard by Dick Holt, winning on count back, with “Subic” a shot behind.

In other splinter news, the England team of Gez Tracy and Steve Ross have gone one up in their series against the Scotland team of Neil Monro and Jim Mills, to be resumed next Weds. An inconsolable Neil was seen leaving the bar questioning the ability of his partner, who had contributed only a half in 27 holes play! It was also discovered there are doubts over his ancestry, with the shocking revelation that his mother was in fact English. Rumours late last night have Neil Cameron being drafted in to replace Jim.

Hiatus Over-Softball is Back!

Pattaya Sports Club Softball News

Spread the word around, Pattaya Sports Club softball is back in town! The Pattaya Pagans and the Mitsubishi Monarchs hooked up in an exciting doubleheader on Sunday, October 11th. This was the first clash of what promises to be a stimulating monthly rivalry.

The first game saw the Monarchs, comprised mainly of Japanese and Korean athletes, jump out to a two run lead in the top of the first.

But the Pagans came to play and behind the hard hitting of Mike (Mr. Ice) Berg, Slammin Sammy and Vagabond Mike, amassed fifteen runs by the end of the fourth.

The Monarchs rallied for three in the sixth with timely hitting by Good Arm Sakamoto and Koba San but could not overcome the deficit and the Pagans prevailed fifteen to six.

The second game was a see-saw battle all the way. Uno San and Iwasaki San put the Monarchs up by four with R.B.I. doubles in the bottom of the second. However, the Pagans erupted for eight runs in the top of the third, back to back dingers by C.F. (Fowl Ball) MacAllen and Curious Curt being the big hits.

Not to be outdone, the Monarchs bounced right back and scored four with Seoulful Lee and Mike (In the Deep) providing the firepower.

In the fourth, the Pagans added four more, thanks to the bats of Rockin’ Robin and Staten Island Jerry, and appeared to have the game in hand. But the Monarchs came back yet again to tie the score and send the game into extra innings.

Finally, in the top of the eighth, clutch hits by M. J. (Coffee) Jim and Terry (Five) Strikes sealed the victory for the Pagans-fifteen to twelve.

This week’s and future games, until further notice, will be played on a temporary field in the back of Somprasong Plaza on Jomtien Beach Rd. The regular field is undergoing extensive renovation which caused the hiatus of the past few months.

As before, games are every Sunday at 2:00 p.m. at the aforementioned site. Equipment is provided and refreshments are available.

All are welcome.

Bierra and Palmer take soggy victories

PSC TAGGS... golf from the Hare House

Wednesday, October 7 - Phoenix Golf and Country Club (Medal)

1st: Phillipe Bierra, 72 net
2nd: Patrick Palmer, 73 net
3rd: Mike Dabanovich, 75 net

The Alternative Golf Gentlemen’s Society made the short trip to Phoenix for a medal competition on Wednesday. The day promised clear skies and light breezes. The promise was not kept. Half way through the round the bottom fell out and torrential rain swept across the fairways. Those who could cope with such adversity did well. Perhaps Swiss native Phillipe Bierra’s profession as a ski instructor helped him in dealing with the inclement weather. He certainly kept his cool and shot an even par 89 off his l7 handicap to win the tournament.

In second place and just one stroke off the pace was American Patrick Palmer. Patrick has been playing well of late and his fellow golfers are anxious to see his 30 handicap start falling. Patrick is concentrating on the putts falling. He figures his handicap will take care of itself.

In third place was Canadian Mike Dabanovich who shot a 96 off a twenty-one handicap for a net 75 and his first trip up on the podium in a while. “Dabber” was still showing the scrapes and bruises that were the result of stepping off a baht bus and into a sewer. He was much more steady on his feet at Phoenix in the rain but the day was early.

Richard Livingston, the local PGA instructor at Pattaya Driving Range welcomed a host of newcomers from around the world. There was Ray from Australia, Mike from America, Mike from England, and Peter from Danmark.

It was a very international field that made for good fellowship on the course and a rousing good time back at the Hare House afterwards.

Friday, October 9 - Laem Chabang International Country Club (Stableford)

1st: Patrick Palmer, 38 points
2nd: Stephen Beard, 33 points
3rd: Jerry Lien, 32 points

Patrick Palmer capped a pretty good week with his best ever Stableford effort at Laem Chabang on Friday. Patrick, who came in second on Wednesday in the Hare House medal competition, shot two under par and pulled in 38 points to take the TAGGS weekly Stableford tournament. He did it on a soggy, soggy course that slowed the ball down everywhere except seemingly on the greens. It didn’t actually rain on Friday. It drizzled. And it drizzled all day. You gotta love golf to play under these conditions and you got to be a little crazy to enjoy it as much as Patrick does.

In second place with 33 points was TAGGS chairman Stephen Beard. Unfortunately, Steve not only had to cope with the wet, but with the extraordinarily slow play as well. Lack of ability on a golf course is excusable. Lack of manners in not allowing faster groups to play through is not. Laem Chabang even exacerbated the problem with a caddy school out on the course that held up play as well. It would be a welcome sight to see marshals out on the local courses keeping the pace of play moving on and reminding the uninformed about their obligations in helping in that regard.

In third place with 32 points was Jerry Lien. Jerry seems to be coming out of his hibernation and is starting to make those regular trips up on the rostrum. He must have a new girlfriend who has been nagging him for some of those TAGGS golf shirts to sleep in.

PH3 Run 761

5/10/98. Hares: F & F, P. T. and Alicia. It was a slow sign-up this week, I think many people didn’t know that the bus leaves at 4 p.m. starting in October, but we were still with 64 runners. Later than planned, the bus left at last in the direction of Sattahip. Somewhere at a Wat a few miles more the bus stopped. No beer truck? No cars? The hares told us with a smile we had to walk a mile to the A-site. Good start, but the A-site brought us a Deja Vu. We were there before. The circle was called, there was one N.N.S.D.D.(Norwegian New Shoe Down Down). The hares were P. T. and F. & F.

About the run there is not much to say. A good run, little bit long, only a few people were not so happy with the two wet spots we had to cross, so what! We are Hash Runners not Sunday Joggers.

The second circle was called and started with beautiful Interhash Prizes presented by our raffle master Who Ate All The Pies. A while later he had to sit on the ice because he gave the Grand Master almost a heart attack by telling a wrong raffle number.

Returners and visitors were called in for Down Downs and then what we were all waiting for - some Religion Advice by Sir Airhead. Hares were iced but as I told before there was nothing to say about the run, only the story about that Rental Crocodile. This is the first time in Hash History that the Hares rent a Crocodile to make the run more exciting. Well done Hares. F & F was iced again for running over his best friend Long Lost Don a while ago. Duck F., Seagull S., Boy George and all the other guys with Cambodian shirts were iced for being Cambodian All Male Hashers. The spinning team Heifer Dust and his friend succeeded to do ONE spin. Well done guys! Teeny Weeny and his friend Benny The Nerd were iced for acting as the Dong Beatles by their haircuts and trying to be one of the last Mohicans (T.W.). The final touch was Sir Airhead’s performance with the “Boom Titty Boom” song. The virgins and their sponsors were called in for Down Downs. What I heard was only one name for sponsor “C. Face”. This guy must be awarded as “Sponsor of the Year”.

There were two cracks named: Seagull Surfer and Betty Boop (with a beautiful tattoo on her ..., which we were not allowed to see). Two anniversary mugs were given to Kill Benny for having 50 runs and one for Flying Frog (me) for having 100 runs. The Hares were called in to sing us their song, but half of the runners ran away from the awful sound. Even my cat is doing better. But nice try guys. The Hash Hymn was done and then back to the bus in the direction of Rovers Return for some good food offered by Who Ate All The Pies. Well done buddy! See you guys next Monday.

Patrick, the Flying Frog

Look up the Pattaya Hash House Harries on the Internet at http://members.tripod.com/~The_Nerd/hashsheet.html or email Susie at [email protected] or call 364 185. We meet every Monday 15:30 hours at the Hare House in Soi Post Office.
