Dining Out: Montien’s Friday BBQ and Seafood Buffet - a great catch!

by Miss Terry Diner

Recently the Dining Out team tried the Montien Hotel’s Saturday night International BBQ and was most impressed with the depth of choice and the excellent value at baht 380++ (hotel speak for plus VAT and service charge). At the invitation of the Montien’s energetic PR lady, Pornpimon Geybui and their executive chef Horst Reichel, the Dining Out Team returned for their Friday BBQ and Seafood buffet.

The venue for both these BBQ’s (and their Tuesday night Asian buffets) is the Verandah Coffee shop, downstairs from the main lobby and adjoining the swimming pool. The term “coffee shop” does not do this place justice. It has been re-modelled recently and now looks very bright and open. The tables are large, chairs ditto and well padded, spotless linen tablecloths with turquoise chequered throw-overs, good quality cutlery and plenty of helpful service staff. There is also an air-conditioned section; however, with the current balmy weather, we chose to dine outside.

Before we began, Miss Terry did a tour of the food stations with Chef Horst, and it is well worthwhile doing this yourself too. There are nine stations and a lot of food choices. Horst also said that each week he changes some of the items, so there is no monotony for regular guests and diners. Another important point, and one stressed by chef Horst was the fact that all of his seafood is fresh, “Alive this afternoon!” he assured me.

Commencing at the appetizers, there was tuna terrine, various salads, fresh oysters, a shrimp pyramid and a crab leg one too. Of course there are various condiments to go with these.

There is also a dedicated salad bar with its own condiments and dressings and then a hot food station which has 10 items, including a beef pepper steak and a chicken breast with mushroom sauce as well as a wasabi salmon with orange pepper sauce, Horst stressing that there is much more than just seafood on offer.

The BBQ meat station included lamb, pork loin on the spit and a marinated beef tenderloin steak. The sauces to go with these are very different too with a South American chimichurri, a Lao pepper sauce and a Bourbon BBQ sauce too. The BBQ seafood station had a whole snapper, rock lobsters, river prawns, crab, squid, mussels and mackerel steak along with more sauce choices.

On another station there was a baked salmon “Wellington” in puff pastry, with three sauces, a seafood paella and a cream of seafood soup.

Yes! There’s more - there is a Fritto Misto station, a type of Italian “satay” cooking with salmon, sweetlip fish, shrimps, crab and various vegetables, with an aioli sauce, wasabi (yippee!), blue cheese dressing and a couple of others.

Finally there are a couple of desserts stations doing amongst other items, a deep fried ice cream and chocolate fondues for those not afraid of their waistline!

We decided to stick with the house white, a pleasant and eminently drinkable chardonnay that evening, and then headed into the food stations. On my first trip it was the oysters and prawns, with a selection of sauces, while Madame made for the Fritto Misto section. Having had a little nibble of Madame’s salmon, I went up and got some more for myself. For me, this was the station of the night. The items are skewered and dipped in a very light crunchy batter then quickly deep fried on the spot. Needless to say, the wasabi went well with them too.

As the night continued there were BBQ rock lobsters to be eaten, steamed fish and yet more Fritto Misto items. Quite honestly, if there had been any more room we would have stayed there all night!

The Dining Out team continues to be impressed with the standard of food at the Montien BBQ’s, and the Friday night one at B. 450++ is excellent value for the seafood on offer, especially as an “all you can eat” deal. We have no hesitation in highly recommending it.

Nightmarch

Early turkey: This Monday December 24 the new collection of seven beer boozers in Soi Zero (just up from Bruno’s munching palace) will be holding a street party commencing at midday and continuing until late. A free buffet, including turkey and ham and the usual Christmas goodies, is on offer as well as live music and entertainment in quiet part of north Pattaya. Worth a look.

Foam snow: The TQ 2 ogling den (Soi BJ, Walking Street) is holding a Christmas Party on Monday, December 24 from 2:00 p.m. onwards. A fat bloke in a red suit, bearing gifts, is due to make an appearance at midnight, sans reindeer.

A three-day Christmas: Pretty much every munching den worthy of the cognomen is offering a Christmas Day noshfest guaranteed to stretch many already bulging waistlines to breaking point. For those who haven’t yet made up their minds where to go, allow me to proffer four possibilities.

First, the Greg’s Kitchen feed bin (Second Road, around the corner from Soi 6) has decided to celebrate Christmas Day on December 24, 25 and 26 with a special menu, available all day. The cost of the three-course munchout is 675 baht. For those who don’t wish to chow down on the Christmas dinner, the regular a la carte menu will still be operational. Second, the Restaurant (Soi 3), run by the Pat, Matt and Chard Comedy Troupe, has three sittings on December 25, at midday, 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. with a three-courser totalling 690 baht. If you would rather dine in the luxury of your own home or hotel, then the slap-up feed can be home delivered.

Third, the relatively new kid on the block, The Lobby (Soi Buakhow, just around the corner from Soi Chaiyapoon) is offering a three-course Xmas dinner at just 375 baht, also over the three days between December 24 and 26. Don’t be fooled by the low tariff, if the dinner is anything like the rest of the menu, the nosh is top of the range and filling.

Finally, Lasse, the Sexy Swede and jovial mine host of the Globetrotter Inn (between Central Road and Soi 7), is conducting a 495 baht Christmas buffet featuring no less than 56 different dishes. Bookings are essential (038 423 167) and if you hurry you may just be able to book in for his preliminary buffet on Saturday, December 22.

I think I’ve gained six kilos just writing this.

The Mouse has a new house: The former Winchester lounge lizard libation room- located above the Champion ogling den in Walking Street - was recently converted into a chrome pole palace, although it remains in the same ownership. The small ogling den formerly attached to the nite-spot has been closed and a new batch of g-stringed sashay artistes has been recruited. Actually, a few of the mini-skirted waitresses can give the dancing maidens a run for their money.

Happy hours are from 7:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. with all libations retailing at just 50 baht. Lady drinks are reasonable at 80 baht.

The new meeter and greeter is Mickey Mouse, formerly of the Spicy Girls Too ogling den. Enticed by a bigger slice of cheese, the rotund roustabout seems to have settled right into his new environment, a fact reflected by the increasing patronage in the revamped den.

‘A good walk spoiled’ (Mark Twain): The new Winchester Two ogling den will be sponsoring a Golf Day to be held on Friday, December 28. It’s a Two Man Better Ball (you show me yours and I’ll show you mine?) tournament that tees off at 10:30 a.m. at the Ban Chang course. Tickets are 1,200 baht and this includes green fees, caddy fees, a T-shirt, dinner and a complimentary drink at the Winchester. Anyone interested should contact the Winchester Two ogling den, the Winchester Sierra Tango operation (Jomtien), the Asylum beer boozer (Soi Chaiyapoon) or Tom Elsey at the Jan boozer in Walking Street.

Carols, not quite by candlelight: The Queen Victoria Inn (Soi 6) will be conducting Christmas Carols between 6:30 p.m. and 6:45 p.m. on Monday, December 24. There will be a free cold buffet available from 6-7:00 p.m. All proceeds will go to the Pattaya Orphanage.

Out of the Rumour Mill: In recent months, the Sexy ogling den (Walking Street) had seemed to be enjoying a major revival in its fortunes following a change of ownership and the installation of new management. Then came a rift between the major shareholder and the popular manager, leading to the latter finding himself in the unemployment queue. Now the chrome pole palace has been completely shut down for either (1) the alleged non-payment of rent or (2) the intransigence of the building owner who has allegedly decided the best way to repossess the property is to lock the lessee’s out.
