3 Sisters #2 slip past Ban
Chang Bandits for PSC Charity Classic title
PSC Charity Classic 2002 - for the benefit
of Underprivileged Kids
PSC
Golf Chairman Steve Donovan (center) awards championship trophies to PSC
Charity Classic 2002 winners 3 Sisters #2 Doug Powell, Jim Montgomery,
Andy Bettany and Ian Edwards.
The 3 Sisters #2 team, made up of Jim Montgomery, Doug
Powell, Andy Bettany and Ian Edwards scored a best 3 out of 4 scores total
of 148 Stableford points to win the PSC Charity Classic 2002 held at
Phoenix Country Club on Friday, January 4.
Jim Montgomery, who “had a great time ... and not
just because our team won, although that had a lot to do with it,” led
the team in scoring with 53 points, followed by Doug Powell’s 51 and
Andy Bettany’s 44.
Ken Leadstone scored 52 points to lead the Ban Chang
Bandits into second place, just one point behind the champions. Combined
with Arthur Hancock’s 48 points and Terry Coles 47, along with Ake
Overgren, the aptly named Bandits finished the tournament with 147
Stableford points.
These outrageously high Stableford points totals are
part of the fun of the tournament, for each player was allocated 24
“Mulligans” over 18 holes, to replay any shot on the course, including
putts. The points totals are also testament that given 24 extra chances,
good scores are bound to result.
Even though this was a team event, individual
performances did not go unrecognized. 140 golfers teed it up to compete
for a veritable king’s ransom in technical and lucky draw prizes, and
nearly all 140 went home with a prize. Prizes included television sets,
microwave ovens, cash, gold, stereos, DVD players, golf equipment, golf
memberships, hotel rooms, restaurant vouchers, plus much, much more, even
a bowling ball.
Most importantly, however, was that the tournament
raised in the vicinity of 400,000 baht to go into the Pattaya Sports Club
charity coffers. This money will be put into the PSC “Fund for
Underprivileged Children”, and will be distributed to worthy charities
throughout the year.
The money raised at the tournament came in part from
entry fees, and part from sponsorships. Every hole on the course had at
least one technical prize up for grabs, sponsored by the benevolence
Pattaya is now becoming well-known for. (Technical prizes, sponsors and
winners are listed in the tables at right.)
As always, tournaments of this magnitude cannot happen
without a lot of hard work from people working “behind the scenes”;
people like PSC Golf Chairman Steven Donovan, Charity Chairman Bernie
Tuppin, Party Chairman Ken Crow (ably assisted by Jan Aamlid), PSC
President Carl Engle, the “Admiral” Dave Richardsom, Bjarne Neilson
(who cooked up a great buffet), Phoenix Country Club management and staff,
and many more too numerous to mention. A big thanks to all who helped, and
apologies to those not mentioned here.

The Londoner's Ian wins
Pattaya Open Darts Tournament
Ian from the Londoner defeated Thanawat Yong from
Bangkok 5 games to 4 in the finals to win the Pattaya Open Darts
Tournament played January 2nd and 3rd at the Bull’s Eye Bar on 2nd Road.
Big
Ian from the Londoner - champion of the Pattaya Darts Open
Ian, a former Pattaya Sports Club season winner said,
“Win or lose, I would have been happy. It was a good game and I was
playing well.”
The Pattaya Open Darts Tournament was organized by
proprietors of the Bull’s Eye, Nee and Dominic. The Bull’s Eye is one
the many venues in Pattaya to host weekly darts league competitions. Nee
finished 4th in the tournament.
Noy, cashier from the Bulls Eye, won the Ladies
Division, edging out 15-year-old Tanya, a rising star on Pattaya darts
scene.
The tournament, a sponsored event, offered a first
prize of 11,000 baht and a trophy.
One of the sponsors, Carl Burgess, thought it was good
idea for both the Bulls Eye and Pattaya. Players and organizers
unanimously agreed that the tournament was a great success and are already
planning the next one for April this year.

UNICEF to benefit from
inaugural 'Pee-Wee' Charity Golf Invitational
The inaugural Pee-Wee Charity Golf Invitational is
scheduled to take place at Eastern Star Resort on Friday February 1st.
Exclusively for up to 45 keen young 7-14 year old golfers, this charity
golf invitational, over 18 holes in four age divisions, is being staged
the day before the 2nd Khun Anand Panyarachun Charity Golf Invitational
for UNICEF.
The organizers saw this as an opportunity to seek
individual sponsorship for the young golfers and thereby raise money for
UNICEF. Former Prime Minister Anand Panyarachun, who is also the
Ambassador for UNICEF in Thailand, will be attending the prize giving
ceremony in the Masters Conference Hall to present trophies and prizes to
the winners. All proceeds from this event, and the Anand Panyarachun
Charity Golf Invitational the day after, will benefit disadvantaged
children in Thailand through UNICEF projects.
The challenging Robert Trent Jones Jnr. course at
Eastern Star Resort is a good place for Pee-Wee golfers to start, using
special fairway tees, and each Pee-Wee ‘Three-Ball’ will be
accompanied by a non-playing adult golfer to supervise and advise on rules
and etiquette. PGA Professional Glyn Jenkins will also be on hand to
supervise the overall activity on the course.
Schools on the Eastern Seaboard are being invited to
enter their junior golfers and raise sponsorship support for them, related
to individual performance on the day.
Mike Franklin, tournament director for both events,
commented, “Having the opportunity to run a Pee-We golf tournament was
good in itself, but the addition of the charity element linked to the Khun
Anand Panyarachun Charity Golf Invitational for UNICEF is a real bonus. We
hope that local schools will encourage their young golfers to take part,
and for parents and friends to give them encouragement through generous
sponsorship support.
“Grateful thanks to Cathay Pacific Airways,
Shenanigans and Eastern Star Resort for organizing and supporting the
Pee-Wee Charity Golf Invitational Tournament, and to recently retired
Cathay executive, Paul Horsting, for coming up with the Pee-Wee concept
and piloting the idea to reality.
“It is never too early to start to play golf, and
this level of activity introduces these very young players to the game in
the best way possible.”
Any company or individual wishing to sponsor the
players or donate prizes should contact Mike Franklin, by e-mail at [email protected]
or by phone/fax at 038 731144.
Full details with entry form, and player sponsorship
forms are available at Eastern Star Resort and at Shenanigans, Pattaya.

Fitness Tips: Programming,
techniques into practice - part 1
by David Garred
Club Manager Dusit Resort Sports Club
G’day readers,
Over the past 3 months, well almost, I’ve been
subjecting you to lifting techniques lessons for gym enthusiasts, personal
trainers and making them applicable for someone that just wants to get
into shape at their own speed with their own gear at home. Cans of baked
beans for equipment, that sort of training.
Now we come to the good stuff, when we learn, as
briefly as possible, why a can of baked beans is suitable for all training
goals. Yes, I’ll be aiming at the mass market, the average person that
wants to get rid of a bit of fat and feel better about themselves with a
bit of a strength gain without having to worry about being huge, like
Arnold. No, not the little Japanese-American bloke from happy days, Arnold
Swartzenegger (apologies if I have spelt that wrongly).
Realistically speaking, less than 1% of the population
have to worry about being that type of huge. On the other hand, again,
realistically speaking, Cindy Crawford is also a genetic freak and very
few women have a chance of manufacturing that level of supermodel. Yes she
trains hard but she is also genetically predisposed to be a tall and slim
lady.
Back to the topic at hand, let’s not obsess about
achieving an ideal that we are physically incapable of achieving. Let’s
instead focus upon what we can do: eat healthy food often but in moderate
proportions, train our bodies regularly so they can achieve a healthy
level of metabolic function and as a result of both, enjoy life!
Aerobic/cardiovascular training for your
lungs/heart-circulatory system is fine and will ensure that the pump
continues to function and function well but once you reach the age of 30
you will never be able to burn sufficient amounts of fat to keep your body
weight under control. That is unless you seriously take up marathon events
and compete at the top level, not for most of us and certainly not this
little black duck. Time is not sufficient for 1 thing in 99% of cases.
Considering that time is a factor for us all, more or
less, then we are all looking for the fastest possible results in the most
time efficient way possible. Also, considering that most of us want to be
burning fat, especially after a big Christmas and a massive New Year, how
can we burn off the extra fat that has been there some time as well as the
new deposits of fat that have gone on in the last month? Simple answer:
that involves a good deal of quality work. You have to increase your
metabolic rate. How do you do that?
You can ONLY achieve that by increasing muscle density,
strength and or size.
Did you notice the last bit - “and or size”? Yes,
ladies in particular, you can increase your metabolic rate without looking
like a lady bodybuilder. Which means that you can help your body burn the
extra fat without making your muscles bigger! They will get harder but
won’t necessarily increase in size with training. Further to that, a
very high percentage of ladies don’t have the growth hormone levels that
will allow them to increase in size no matter how hard they train.
OK now you are interested, you can burn that extra fat
without getting bigger or for the men, you can put on a bit of size if you
want while making the beer gut go away. How much time do you have to spend
in the gym? Hours a day, day in day out for years? Yep, if you want to be
huge and if you are lucky enough to have that genetic disposition.
More next week. Until then,
Carpe’ Diem
Asian ladies quick to sign
up for the Asia Challenge Cup
Asia vs. The Rest Of The World
Friday 25th January is the date
for the inaugural Ladies Match, Asia vs. The Rest Of The World, to be held
at Eastern Star Resort, competing for the Shenanigans Asia Challenge Cup.
The tournament format is ‘Pairs Combined Stableford’
with two Asian ladies paired against two farang ladies, representing The
Rest of the World, in each four ball. The pair scoring the highest
combined Stableford points total will win a ‘match point’ for their
team.
The predominantly Thai Asian Team is captained by Usa
Chaiyusit, and The ‘Rest of the World’ Team by Kitty Stor of OK Golf
Fashions, also a sponsor of the tournament.
In addition to the match trophy, the Asia Challenge
Cup, there will be trophies and prizes for pairs and individual
performances, plus a range of technical prizes including near pins, long
putts and straight drives.
There will also be, quite intentionally, just one long
drive to compete for!
The local Asian lady golfers have already been quick to
sign-up and an exciting field is in prospect for this inaugural event.
Shenanigans’ landlord, Kim Fletcher, guarantees
Shenanigans very friendly hospitality on the course, and afterwards at
Shenanigans, Pattaya, for the renowned carvery buffet, prize giving
ceremony and lucky draw.
Full details and entry form for the Shenanigans Asia
Challenge Cup, Ladies Golf Match, Asia vs. The Rest Of The World, is in
current issues of Pattaya Mail, can be downloaded from Shenanigans

High numbers from TAGGS,
shoot low
IPGC TAGGS Golf from The Haven
Monday 31st December 2001 - Century Ban Chan (Stableford)
1st: Bob Van Mol, 36 pts.
2nd: Al Rolnik, 34 pts.
3rd: Rick Bevington, 32 pts.
4th: Jeff McLaury, 31 pts. (cb 9, 15 pts.)
5th: Stephen Beard, 31 pts. (cb 9, 13 pts.)
6th: Karl Holm, 31 pts. (cb 9, 12 pts.)
“Back Door” at last sneaked into first place as the
TAGGS saw out the old year at the short but difficult Nick Faldo layout at
Ban Chan. Shooting a gross 34 on the front that he was not quite able to
repeat on the back nine, he was still good enough to see off the rest of
the chasing pack headed by the improving Al Rolnik.
Back at The Haven Richard Livingston, the resident PGA
professional, welcomed new members Granville Swanton and David Johnson,
whilst welcoming back Nilaet Hongthong (Tehn), Alan Jones, Stuart
Hutchings and David Jones.
The twos pool was shared by David Johnson, Brian Kelly,
Jeff McLaury and George Thompson, the latter at last having some success
after much effort to little avail in the recent past.
Wednesday 2nd January - Khao Kheow (Stableford)
1st Division
1st: Peter Hall, 34 pts.
2nd: Harry Riley, 33 pts.
3rd: Alan Jones, 31 pts.
2nd Division
1st: Serge Straeten, 38 pts.
2nd: Nilaet Hongthong, 35 pts.
3rd: Beth Lill, 33 pts.
A large contingent of golfers necessitated the
formation of two divisions to welcome in the New Year at the Pete Dye
designed Khao Kheow, played over the A and C courses.
Peter at last showed a little of the form that earned
him his 13 handicap, just pipping the “Garden Gnome” in the first
division, with Serge still showing the benefits of private lessons taking
the second division from the beautiful Tehn.
Richard welcomed new members Gary Welch, Bengt and Eva
Viklund and David Mather, while at the same time welcoming back Claes
Mueller, Nikki De Bliek and Chris John. Brian Kelly again knocked in a two
but this time did not have to share the pot with anyone.
Friday 4th December - Great Lake (Stableford)
Ladies Division
1st: Nilaet Hongthong, 36 pts. (cb9, 19 pts.)
2nd: Lamud Lindborg, 36 pts. (cb9, 15 pts.)
Gentlemen’s Division
1st: Karl Holm, 38 pts.
2nd: Al Rolnik, 35 pts.
3rd: Harry Riley, 34 pts. (cb9, 20 pts.)
4th: Klaus Schackt, 34 pts. (cb9, 14 pts.)
For the second time in the week the TAGGS played a Nick
Faldo designed course, this one being at Great Lake, and again the numbers
of entrants required the formation of two divisions, but this time they
were split by sex. Tehn went one better than her previous outing, just
managing to win on count back from Lamud, who could not maintain the
pressure over the back nine holes.
Karl ensured his usual single win during his holiday
with a solid performance over the two nines that cosigned Al to his second
runner up placing of the week. Surely it will not be long before the big
quiet man is in first position.
Ed McMurray managed to get the only two of the day,
thus livening up an otherwise disappointing performance.
PSC golfers set sail for
Royal Thai navy course
Monday 31 Dec - Sattahip (Stableford)
Nineteen duffers, led by the ‘Admiral’, set sail
for the Royal Thai Navy’s north & west layouts for a Stableford
competition on New Year’s Eve.
Steady Dane Mike Dige took the A flight with 34 points.
Icelander Einar Johansson was second with 33 points and Aussie Mike (I
know a joke) Gosden finished third with 31 points.
The B flight had better scores, with Canuk Walter Hanak
taking the B flight with 38 points, Bahraini Ebrahim second with 36 points
and Icelander Bjorn Kristjohansson third with 33 points.
Lt (JG) Aree Yearkyen, the assistant course director,
informed the golfers that the new clubhouse, now under construction, will
be open in late February offering greatly enhanced facilities for all
golfers.
Thursday 3 Jan - Pattaya CC
On a gentle New Year’s Day, with a light breeze just
stirring the leaves on the trees, low humidity and a temperature just
right to warm the ageing bones of the ‘not young anymore’, it would be
a pleasure to play a friendly round of golf at Pattaya C.C.
Unfortunately, this was not to be, with howling winds
battering at all 35 competitors, and many balls going at right angles to
the direction they were supposed to go. It was a fight against the
elements, a situation not normally met in this friendly country.
However, golfers being of stout spirit, they battled on
and in fact produced some commendable results.
In the A flight, Paul Huneker won with 69 net, second
was Don Richardson on 70 net, third was Rick Evans with net 73 on count
back from Mike (tell me when my name’s in so I can buy copies for the
whole of Perth) Gosden.
In B flight, John Swanson won with net 71, beating Rick
Berington on count back into second place, also 71 net. Third was Alf
Carlsson on 73 net.
Closest to pins: No. 5 Michael Dige (at .25cm nearly a
hole in 1), No. 7 Alan Pearce, No. 12 Wayne Koch, and No. 16 Walter Hanak.
Long putts: No. 9 Rich Montana and No. 18 Bjorn Krisjansson.
New Year Joy for Bill Hewitt
IPGC Pattaya Golf Society from the Bunker
On Friday, 4th January, forty-two Bunker Boys travelled
the long road to Century Chonburi for their first taste of competition
golf this year. This, coupled with the absence of the transport manager,
John Preddy, made the task of moving the throng “oop north” almost
insoluble until some baht buses were commandeered.
The course was overwhelmed with players and there was
great difficulty in securing enough caddies for the day, so the usual
assortment of gardeners and drivers were press-ganged into service.
The course played very tough with difficult pin
positions and rock hard surfaces off the fairways, but in division one
Bill Hewitt came to the fore with his creditable 37 points, holding off
the challenges of Keith Saunders, 34, and Michael Dige, 33.
In division two young Tyrone Renggli powered his way to
the front with 32 points, narrowly ahead of Sunny Ruthsip, 31, and the
leprechaun Joe McKerr on 30 points.
Once again Frank Neilsen shared the Bunker Super Sawng
award, this time with Keith Saunders, both recording two’s on their
cards. The Bunker Banana Booby went to the jovial Mental Micky for his
total of 15 points which included a splendid back nine total of 9 points!
Altogether it was a difficult day in terms of logistics but a thoroughly
enjoyable one nevertheless. Find out more at http://www.thebunkerboys.com
PH3 Run 930
A short trip out to the A site, a wonderful idea for
New Year’s Eve. After some Christmas chat the circle is called by Sir
Chicken F. One pair of new shoes this week christened in the usual way.
Time for the virgin hares, Mobile and SBS to send us on our way straight
into thick undergrowth. Screams echoing out as the branches twanged back,
severely impairing the vision of many runners. A few hundred yards of this
and then out onto the open dirt tracks following paper back to the A site
as we do.
On arrival back to the beer truck some good food to
keep our energy for the drinking session to follow. The circle was called
as darkness fell; Dr Pinky wasted no time in calling the raffle. Then
Hammer collected donations for our bus driver. After this, traditionally,
the hares were called in. Both were sporting full Hogmanay dress. The
voting was decisive: good run especially for virgin hares and a good
shirt.
Returnees and visitors drunk their down downs, Syphy
Pee was iced for not wearing a Hash shirt. Time for the bad RA who
instantly called in the Hares to the sound of screaming Thistle cracks.
Next, Prince of Spin’s lady was named Moon Star. It was then decided
that the Belgium Hash s@#s will stay Hash s@#s and Quarter pounder with
cheese will remain Hash trash. Dave Walker called onto the ice. After 18
runs a hash name is needed! The choices given by Sir Airhead: Boring C or
Flat Liner. However, a friend of his was called onto the ice and when
asked his opinion he said I’ve no @# idea. You guessed it, that’s the
name he was given ‘I’ve No @# idea! One more name, Mobile’s lady Pim,
was named Butterfly Hollywood.
Over to Sir Chicken who iced the bad RA for losing his
motorbike keys. Two lying leavers, W and One Hump. After the virgins drank
their down downs, it was time for the choir with many new members. Charlie
Manson received his 200 run mug (well done), Fini took over the circle and
another RA iced. Sir Chicken was asked why James was walking around with a
condom in his possession. His answer was that the chicken family practice
safe sex! NMC and One Hump took a seat for spying on Sir Fossil while she
was changing after the run. A Breadfruit and gang were iced for no
apparent reason. It’s that time of the night to listen to the Hares
song, wonderfully sung, followed by the Hash hymn sung by all the Hashers
facing the full moon.
On On and happy New Year to everyone - MC
Bill Thompson Aces #7A at
Laem Chabang
Bill
Thompson (foreground) used his 8 wood to ace the par 3 #7A at Laem Chabang.
(File Photo)
On January 5, 2002, Bill Thompson used his now famous
eight wood to score a hole-in-one at the 170 yard seventh hole on the A
course at Laem Chabang Golf Resort. The shot was high and soft as it
bounced once just in front of the hole and disappeared from sight. Just as
rare, his playing partners scored a 2, 3 and 4 on the hole. They were:
Dennis Willett, Tim McMaster and George Davis.
