Klaus Schackt scores 44 to win Wayne Tischbern Memorial 2002

Julian Clarke double-bogies last to finish 1 over par - scratch

Every year now for the past 3 years, some of Pattaya’s best (and worst) golfers play a tournament in honor of a lost hacker, Wayne Tischbern. Wayne wasn’t exactly known for his golfing prowess; au contraire mon fraire, in fact his antics on the links were legendary. His golf cap, complete with fish lures, buttons and propeller, his eccentric dress, the Mekong (or Sangthip) Coke always within reach, and his propensity to finish each tournament he entered (which, in fact, were few each year) sometimes up to an hour after all others, were in part the impetus for the birth of the now-famous “Dream Team”. It wouldn’t be a stretch to label Wayne a “hacker’s hacker”.

Winners of the Wayne Tischbern Memorial 2002: (L to R) Alan Alexander (Rabbits), Arthur Bailey (3rd Division), Nora Haugsjordet (Ladies), PGA Professional Richard Livingston, Overall Champion Klaus Schackt, and Russell Finch (2nd Division).

The tournament now known as the Wayne Tischbern Memorial was birthed many moons ago to celebrate Wayne’s birthday. It, too, became legendary as a raucous day on the links when, for many, especially those of similar golfing ability to Wayne, finishing the round with empty bottles (and without spilling too much), as well as all the antics that would produce, seemed more important than where one finished, like in 1998 when Mats Mueller ran his golf cart into a tree on the very first hole, just missing out on the coveted “Lassie’s Outstanding Achievement Award”. Or in the last “Hare House Open” (which was what this tournament was called before its name change) in 1999 when fellow Dream Teamer Jack Levy earned the “American Award” for his truly remarkable 186 scratch for 0 Stableford points - a truly proud day for Jack and the Dream Team.

Mention was made of turning around the format of this tournament so that the “worst golf” would win the day, but alas that would be a hard sell. This is, after all, considered one of the “majors” on the golfing calendar. Besides, and perhaps this is attributable to the great golf instruction available here in Pattaya (thanks Richard), scores have improved over time, and some great scores were turned in this year in the 3rd Wayne Tischbern Memorial Golf Tournament played at Phoenix Country Club on Friday, January 11.

Klaus Schackt shot what was arguably the best round of the day. Klaus went out in even par 36, including two birdies on the Mountain, and came back in with a 3 over par 39 to finish with a scratch 75 and 44 Stableford points off his 11 handicap to win the Wayne Tischbern Memorial championship trophy.

Seven-handicapper Julian Clarke played an amazing round. Julian went out on the Ocean nine, carded 2 birdies, a bogey and 6 pars to make the turn at 1 under par - scratch. Julian continued his form on his back nine, the Mountain, carding 1 birdie, 1 bogey and 6 pars, and was 1 under par on the day going into the last hole. Unfortunately, Julian hiccupped on the last and double-bogeyed, but nonetheless finished his round just 1 over par (73) to win low gross honors. His 42 Stableford points also earned him the runner-up spot in Division 1 to Klaus’s 44.

Alan Alexander shot what might have been his best round ever, and raised a few eyebrows along the way. Alan carded 48 Stableford points (12 under par) off his 34 handicap to win the Rabbits Division.

Nora Haugsjordet shot a scratch 89, net 64 off her 25 handicap to card 44 Stableford points en route to winning the Ladies Division. When asked if it was her best round ever, she replied, “No, I once shot an 84”. Well done Nora.

Russell “Pin Eye” Finch, who admitted to everyone who would listen that, “I’m hitting the ball great,” did just that, winning Division 2 on count back over Thomas Breslin with 41 Stableford points. Both men had 20 points on the back nine, with Russell getting the edge by virtue of 13 points to Thomas’s 12 over the last 6 holes. Russell amassed 21 points on the front nine, which included one hole on which he didn’t get any points.

“Steady” Arthur Bailey put together 4 pars on the day, and no “big” holes en route to scoring 43 points, winning Division 3 by one point over Harald Cranz.

The more “eventful” golf on the day didn’t go unnoticed. Dream Teamer Kurt Farnham finished the day (early) with 0 Stableford points - not necessarily because he shot particularly bad, although being on the Dream Team it wouldn’t be far-fetched to assume so. Instead, Kurt had to “retire” early from the competition due to a “delicate” condition. Word from other members of the Dream Team was that the wait at each succeeding drink stand was becoming increasingly longer. After giving it his best shot, Kurt finally had to trot off the course. A commendable effort under difficult circumstances.

Meanwhile, a certain 28 handicapper named “Frank” carded an amazing 5 (five) Stableford points to finish the day with the lowest score for those who actually finished the day.

Also worth note, two judges made their presence felt in the long drive competition. Judge “FF” Brian Brizzell crunched a booming shot off the tee on Ocean #9 to win the Rabbits Division long drive, and Toto, under the watchful eyes of Richard Livingston, our resident PGA professional, out-drove all others in Division 3. “Dirt Groupie” might have been proud.

Every golfer who participated on the day, whether they shot a good score or bad, were treated to a great day out, probably the best shirt ever for this event, and an absolutely mouth-watering buffet at the prize giving ceremony back at The Haven.

A big thanks to all who worked very hard behind the scenes to make this tournament a success: tournament organizer Stephen Beard, on course marshal Richard Livingston, scorekeeper Wayne Ogonoski, MC at the prize giving Mike Franklin, and Lamyai and all the staff at The Haven.

And finally, a Mekong-Coke toast to Wayne Tischbern - a legendary hacker taken from us well before his time.

Kran holds onto the lead

Cafe Kronborg Tuesday Bowling League

After week 17 of Cafe Kronborg Tuesday Bowling League competition, and the league’s little New Year break, they are back in action again.

Songkran started the year out with a 224 string.

This week Kran’s team won against Somrak’s 3-1 (the team will be renamed team Udom, in the absence of Somrak).

Mio’s team won 3-1 against Nual’s, in a match where it was down to the last pin in two of the games.

Otto’s team had a good day and came out with a 3-1 win against Jeed’s.

Only one string over 200 on the day, bowled by Kran, whose 224 was a good way to start the new year.

Fitness Tips: Programming, techniques into practice – part 2

by David Garred Club Manager Dusit Resort Sports Club

G’day readers,

Fortunately for all of us the fat burn we require as a result of increased metabolic rate comes from 2-3 good, hard training sessions per week. About 1 hour each session should see you well and truly on the right track but correct technique must be employed, that is what I’ve been showing for the last 3 months, and correct programming is the other key component.

The chart below is what they are making us train to (at P.T. Colleges and P.E. Universities) so we know what will work with our clients. I’ll not be going into why, too long and boring, but we’ll take a short look at how to make it work for you.

So what does this mean?
Purpose, we’ll go into a little later.
Load and % of 1 RM
are for you trainer to help you determine. Load is relative while % of 1 RM is far more exact. It’s talking about the amount of weight that you need to lift. 1 RM is an abbreviation for 1 “Repetition Maximum” which means the maximum amount of weight that you can lift (at the correct speed for your training goal) 1 time only. % of 1 RM is the percentage of the 1 repetition maximum weight that you should use for your regular training weight.

E.G. if I can lift 70kg 1 time at the correct speed and can not complete the second lift without help from my trainer or spotter then my 1RM is 70kg. If I’m a beginner strength training person in that gym then I should be lifting 70 to 80 percent of the 70kg, or 49kg-56kg should be my regular training weight range - the weights that I normally lift when training.

Reps are the number of lifts without stopping to rest, the repetitions.

Sets are the number of lift groups; you would do x number of reps in 1 set and then rest before doing it again.

Next week we will get into “lifting speed”. Until then,

Carpe Diem

Ebrahim and Carriere triumph at Great Lake and Noble Place

PSC Golf from the Cafe Kronborg

Monday 7 Jan - Great Lake (Stableford)
Forty golfers travelled to Great Lake for a Stableford competition, divided into two flights, A flight 0-19, and B flight 20 upwards.

Steady Ebrahim took the A flight with 41 points, second with 36 points was Walter Hanak, third with 35 points was Jens Schalberg and fourth was Mike Dige with 33 points.

“Steady” Ebrahim

Britt-Marie Wardstrom took the B flight with 37 points, second was Arthur Bailey (Mr Steady) with 36 points, third Alf Carlson with 36 points and fourth Sum Yui Wah with 35 points on a count back from John Swanson.

Near pins: #5 Johan Reynisson, #7 Barry Kerr, #12 Walter Hanak, and #16 Walter Hanak

Long putts: #9 Ebrahim and #18 John Swanson

Thursday 10 Jan - Noble Place (Stroke)
There are some days when everything seems to point to great golf and low scores, and Nobel Place on the day seemed to promise just that. The course seemed to be in good condition, if a little dry and fairways a little bare. Weather was fine if a little warm, breeze light, so lets set some low records.

Playing B & C courses, our four ball zoomed round B, then hit the wall on C. Still surely the other 30 players couldn’t have played as bad. I was soon to find out.

Chuck Carriere

When the scores started to come in it became apparent the course had won, Noble Place 32 Competitors 0 Draw 2, nobody had broken par and most of the scores were the stuff of nightmares.

Most of the winners were pleasantly surprised, and perhaps the biggest surprise was in the A flight (0-15) where the ‘better’ players should have been able to handle conditions better than the B flight (16 up), but obviously could not.

A flight winner was Chuck Carriere with net 72, second Rick Evans net 76, third Thomas Bergwall net 77 on count back from Ged Mason.

B flight - winner Neils Jorgenson net 72, second Ebrahim net 74 on count back from third Mick O’Connor net 74.

Near pins: B2 Chuck Carriere, B5 Johann Reynisson, C3 Elias Magnusson and C6 Ebrahim

Long putt: B9 Jerry Kurtz and C9 Mick O’Connor

Despite the scores most people had a fine day out and all voted it better than working.

Don Antonio wins bragging rights

PSC Three Sister’s Golf

by Herbie Ishinaga

Monday brought the normal group of golfers along with a few new ones out for a beautiful day of golf at Siam Country Club. The holidays must have factored in to the scores, as there were very few good scores, even though the day was perfect for golfing.

I guess Don Antonio didn’t have as much to drink as the rest of the field as he carded 39 points to take the bragging rights. We will have to be cutting Don’s handicap as he keeps winning, even as his handicap goes down.

Don Antonio carded 39 points to win Three Sisters bragging rights for the week.

Running a close second was Bob Moberg with 36 points - as I wrote, the rest of us didn’t do so well as the holiday celebrations caught up with us.

Also for the new players - be sure to count all of your shots. Air shots, tree shots, and grounding your club in the bunkers count as strokes played and should be added to your score. Please inform your playing partners of the rules and enter it on the cards.

Holding the bag for the week was Eddie Rudkin with a blazing 14 points. I guess Eddie really tied one on over the holidays. Hands shaking on the putts Eddie? Anyway, Eddie has joined the Monday golf group but will not be holding the bag for long as most of us take our turn at the bottom.

The Irish take Diamond Dave’s sparkle

It was a different heading a year ago when Dave Pittman (Diamond Dave) had his team inflict a crushing defeat on the County Cork Club. Diminished yes, that is the word. But last Thursday at Burapha, the new team from Ireland and Pattaya, led by their Captain Lumpy Russell, organized themselves a litter better.

At an earlier breakfast held in the Kronborg, the teams were announced and it looked like the Irish had a fighting chance when one of their star players, Sean Ewing (Donegal) arrived on the scene, and the Kronborg team knew they were going to have a fight on there hands. It was also a bit like an Australian Rugby match with the captain Lumpy going around to every one of the 18 players representing Fernhill Golf and Country Club and saying that he wanted a game of golf never seen before - and that is what he got.

On leaving the Kronborg to board the coach, captain of the Pattaya team asked all his golfers, dressed in their very red shirts, to sit on one side of the bus as he did not want his team talking to the opposition, who were dressed in very smart white shirts with the collars and cuffs in green and orange (designed by Bill Davies and Gert Hanson).

It was not long before the first team from the Kronborg, led by the Diamond himself, hit a screamer down the first and the battle royal started. As Dave’s partner Nual Russell waited for the Irish Mick Bowes, proprietor of Fernhill, and his partner Paul O Mahoney, ex captain of Fernhill, to follow the screamer, Paul did. The match was a scotch foursome, with the Kronborg taking the first, but that was the last hole that they won in the match. Mick and Paul went on to win 5 and 4.

As the game progressed, the Kronborg were doing well at the turn, and were ahead in six of the 9 four balls. But Lumpy’s words kept spreading across the course: “don’t let me down lads”. Sure enough, as the battle weary lads were heading for the clubhouse an air of despair came over the Diamond’s face. Defeat? No, it cant happen to us, we have beaten these Irish 3 years in the running and surely not today. But as the teams returned it did not look good for the Pattaya golfers.

The Irish team, resplendent in their white golf-shirts with green and orange trim, defeated the Kronborg at Burapha.

The only heroes the Kronborg had were Egon Nielsen, the son of the owner of the Kronborg, and his partner Rick Montana who smashed poor Joe Banks and Ray (Rocky) Ryan 6 and 5. But, as the names were going up on the leader board, it grew apparent what the day had in store.

Bob Walton and Willie Mercer, 3 down going to the 15, again heard their captain’s words: “don’t let me down”. The two lads responded by winning the next 4. Poor, devastated Geoff Couch bowed his head in defeat.

Then the Irish captain and his partner Joe Clines came in with a resounding win of 4 and 3 over Archi Armstrong and Peter (the King) Thompson. They were followed by Bill Davies, vice captain of the Irish and ex Irish captain Darl White with a 1 up against the Admiral Dave Richardson and Jeff North.

At this point it was all over and the Pattaya lads were beaten 7 and a half to 1 and a half.

The bus back to the Kronborg was something else, as Diamond Dave took his defeat well. It was a bit like a retuning Rugby team: lots of Rugby songs (no golf songs).

The Kronborg produced food that would rank with the very best in Thailand. When that was through, more singing ensued and all the speeches praised Bill Davies and Gert Hansen for their organization, and Dow Banks for her video work.

The two captains spoke a resounding yes - they will take on each other again and next time it might be Cork.

The 2nd Khun Anand Panyarachun Charity Golf Invitational for UNICEF

Eastern Star Resort and UNICEF are pleased to announce that the 2nd Khun Anand Panyarachun Charity Golf Invitational Tournament for UNICEF will be held on Saturday, 2nd February.

Last year ‘s inaugural event was a great success, and 1.2 million baht was raised to benefit disadvantaged children in Thailand through UNICEF assisted projects.

This year ‘s event promises to be equally successful, thanks primarily to the two platinum sponsors: Cathay Pacific Airways and Proctor & Gamble; and the two gold sponsors: Thai Farmers Bank and GE Capital. The four-ball team scramble, a format introduced last year, proved to be popular among the predominantly Thai field of golfers and will be repeated again.

In addition to the main tournament, an inaugural Pee-Wee Tournament for young golfers, aged 7-14 years, will be held on Friday, 1st February, with sponsorship and proceeds from this event contributing to the overall sum raised for UNICEF.

The United Nations Children’s Fund, UNICEF, has been active in Thailand for more than fifty years, and provides education research, protection, health care and support for the rights of children. His Excellency, Khun Anand, is the ambassador for UNICEF in Thailand and he will present the numerous trophies and prizes at the awards ceremonies on both days.

A limited number of sponsorship packages are still available for the Khun Anand Charity Golf Invitational on February 2nd. Please contact Eastern Star Resort (038-630410-6) if you would like to participate in, and support, this most worthwhile charity event.

“Yesterday’s children are today’s youth and tomorrow’s adults. They are our future, and we need to invest in their future” - HE Anand Panyarachun, UNICEF Ambassador for Thailand.

Tony and Noi just in front to win Shenanigans January pairs scramble

Shenanigans Very Friendly Golf Society began the New Year with a pair’s scramble at Eastern Star, with Tony Stevens and Usa (Noi) Chaiyusit winning by one fifth of a shot from Ban Chang ‘locals’ Arthur Hancock and Ken Leadstone.

Tony and Usa, off a modest team handicap of 5.2, carded a gross 71 to produce a net 65.8. Arthur and Ken grossed 72 and a net 66 off their team handicap of 6 to take the runners-up spot.

A surprised Ray and Im Woodruffe, returning a net 70.8, found themselves in third place.

Arthur and Ken further demonstrated their current form by claiming near pins on holes four and eight respectively, and Arthur adding to his spoils by sinking the longest first putt on hole six. Ed Trayling and visitor/newcomer Vanna Adams claimed the other two near pins, and Mike Franklin the long putt on the fourteenth.

The weather was near perfect for golf, the course was in great shape, but play was slow for most, due to much traffic on the course.

Tuesday January 22nd is the next outing for a pairs better ball - sign-up at Shenanigans for that and ladies, don’t forget to sign-up for the Shenanigans Asia Challenge Cup Ladies Match: Asia vs. The Rest of the World, that takes place a few days later on Friday 25th January. Entry forms are on the notice board in Shenanigans.

The Square Ring

OK, Veeraphol Nakhonluang (35-1-1) has successfully defended his WBC Bantamweight title by beating up on yet another fighter from South of the Border (South of the USA Border. That would be Mexico for those of you in the Sunday Night Quiz), Sergio Perez (23-8-1). Veeraphol, besides being undefeated since 1998, has beaten four fighters from Mexico. Going into the fight Perez said, “It’s a curse. I am not afraid.” Note to Senior Perez, “It is not a curse. It’s called inviting someone you can whip into your house and then whipping them. It’s called Thai Boxing.” Yes it is.

The fight itself was one sided. Perez had about as much chance as a “farang arguing with a baht buss driver”. In truth, as that’s what we deal in here, Veeraphol should have knocked him out. Perez was almost down and out in the 5th and the 11th but he’s one tough hombre. The judges had it 118-111, 118-110, and 120-108.

Pitchit Siriwat (25-1) gets a chance to knock off Nicaragua’s Rosendo Alvarez (30-2-1, 19 KOs) and capture the WBA Jr. Flyweight Title as part of a 4 hours national TV card on America’s Showtime Cable. (The bout should be seen sometime Sunday morning Jan 20 in Pattaya). The fight, which will be held in the Jai-Alai Fronton in Miami Florida, will certainly seem like home for the champ considering the large Latin population in the Miami area. Alvarez has only two losses on his record. One when he was DQ’d for a low blow and the other to perennial 105 champ Richard Lopez.

Pitchit Siriwat (25-1, 12 KOs), of Chaiyaphoom, won the WBA 108-pound crown in his 18th career bout with a second-round TKO over Keiji Yamaguchi on Dec. 3, 1996, in Osaka, Japan. The Thailand native successfully defended the title five times from June 1997 through February 2000. Siriwat has captured 18 consecutive contests since suffering his lone defeat at the hands of Leo Gamez on Oct. 9, 1994, for the WBA 108-pound championship.

You gotta laugh every time one of the rankings organization throws a “hissy fit.” Pattaya saw the WBC’s version when they held their convention in Pattaya last December. Well, batten down the hatches boys and girls cause there’s another one a brewing. The entire world knows that Lennox Lewis and Mike Tyson are going to fight on April 6th in Las Vegas. That is unless Mike does something usual and ends up in the Monkey House. The WBC issued a statement to the effect that unless the fight was signed by a week ago Tuesday, the WBC would put it out to “purse bid”. In a “purse bid” any promoter can bid on the fight. The WBC would take the highest bid. The champ (Lewis) would get 75% of the purse while the challenger (Tyson) would get 25%. How did the two fighters’ camps handle the deadline? They ignored it. The WBC has called for purse bids to be in by the 24th of January. Lewis-Tyson will be a done deal by then. The WBC will posture, stamp their feet then take their sanctioning fee and move on. Gotta love it.

GOT a note from Patrick “aka The Belgian”. “My next fight and promotion will be in the Thepprasit International Stadium on 8 March”. Then on the 10th of March he’s off to Belgium to get his boxing license. He’ll probably fight sometime in April in Gent or Antwerp. He writes, “Maybe a title shot for the Belgium title?” There are plans for a Friday Night Fight in Pattaya that will include 3 Muay Thai and 3 International Fights with some entertainment. In July there will be a Dinner Gala for Charity much like the one held at the Marriott in Pattaya last December. Yep that’s what he did say.
