"Football" Finch
crushes field with 44 points
PSC Three Sisters Golf
On Monday the 14th, golfers from the Three Sisters
gathered at Siam for the bragging rights session. The field was the
biggest for our Monday golf, and as the hangovers from the holidays are
over, scores reflected the change.
Russell
“Football” Finch (left) shot par on the Front 9 at Siam Country Club
and brought home 44 points to win the bragging rights and a golf cap
donated by “Don” Antonio at the 3 Sisters weekly golf competition on
Monday14 January. Keith (right) came in last with 23 points.
Crushing the field was good old Russell “Football”
Finch (formerly, or perhaps still also, “Pin-Eye” Finch) with 44
points. Russell played an excellent round and shot par on the front nine.
Chasing Russell around the course were Thibault and Don
Ratcliffe, but they came in a distant second with 39 points. Close behind
the second place finishers were Jimmy Little with 38 points, George Davis,
Gerry Carpenter, and Eddie Kristianson with 37 points. Obviously the
hangovers were gone and the golfing showed a marked improvement from last
week’s scores.
Holding up the bottom this week was Keith Jones - hard
luck Keith. Last week Keith would have been well in the pack with his 23
points but with hangovers gone, even the bottom has moved up to a
respectable 23 points. Almost snatching away the bottom bag was another
Keith. Keith Philips managed 24 points and just escaped being the bag
holder for the week. As always on Mondays, everyone had fun.

The 2nd Khun Anand
Panyarachun Charity Golf Invitational for UNICEF
Eastern Star Resort and UNICEF are pleased to announce
that the 2nd Khun Anand Panyarachun Charity Golf Invitational Tournament
for UNICEF will be held on Saturday, 2nd February.
Last year ‘s inaugural event was a great success, and
1.2 million baht was raised to benefit disadvantaged children in Thailand
through UNICEF assisted projects.
This year ‘s event promises to be equally successful,
thanks primarily to the two platinum sponsors: Cathay Pacific Airways and
Proctor & Gamble; and the two gold sponsors: Thai Farmers Bank and GE
Capital. The four-ball team scramble, a format introduced last year,
proved to be popular among the predominantly Thai field of golfers and
will be repeated again.
In addition to the main tournament, an inaugural
Pee-Wee Tournament for young golfers, aged 7-14 years, will be held on
Friday, 1st February, with sponsorship and proceeds from this event
contributing to the overall sum raised for UNICEF.
The United Nations Children’s Fund, UNICEF, has been
active in Thailand for more than fifty years, and provides education
research, protection, health care and support for the rights of children.
His Excellency, Khun Anand, is the ambassador for UNICEF in Thailand and
he will present the numerous trophies and prizes at the awards ceremonies
on both days.
A limited number of sponsorship packages are still
available for the Khun Anand Charity Golf Invitational on February 2nd.
Please contact Eastern Star Resort (038-630410-6) if you would like to
participate in, and support, this most worthwhile charity event.
“Yesterday’s children are today’s youth and
tomorrow’s adults. They are our future, and we need to invest in their
future” - HE Anand Panyarachun, UNICEF Ambassador for Thailand.

Fitness Tips: Programming,
techniques into practice - part 3
by David Garred
Club Manager Dusit Resort Sports Club
G’day readers,
As promised, what follows is more on lifting speeds and
later, we’ll get into the purpose of it all.
Lifting speed is one of the biggest revolutions
that has happened in the recent past of the Fitness Industry. Speeds have
dramatically reduced as scientific studies have shown that every single
muscle fiber applicable needs to fail for the optimal training effect. We
now know that there are at least 12 different types of muscle fibers, 1
slow twitch, that’s the red one, and the rest are all increasingly
faster twitching fibers/cells. Most traditional lift speeds do not even go
close to stimulating the slow twitch and when you do, you can feel the
difference.
Basically speeds are as follows:
Fast/Max explosive – not worth talking about
unless you want to be an Olympic sprinter, shot put event participant or
power-lifting champion.
Medium – for most trainers looking for endurance
performance and fat burning due to metabolic speed increase, 3 seconds to
lift up and 3 seconds to lower down on each and every single lift. Best to
use a stopwatch or a second hand to get the correct speed.
Slow – 7 seconds up and 7 seconds down. For
general strength training.
Very slow – 8 seconds up and 10 seconds down or
even slower but ensure that breathing is regulated and the weight never
stops. This is for Body Building and increasing Lean Muscle Mass.
To make these speeds of lift work you must ensure that
you have the correct weight; too little and insufficient stimulation, no
results; too much and you can’t complete the set, resistance is not on
the muscles to be worked long enough, no results.
Stick to the guidelines and be a purist about your
training, you’ll be happy within 6-12 weeks.
Rest time: you have to get your breath back
between sets, don’t take longer, you are wasting your social time.
Days: Yep, that is all you need to do if you
train your full body and train it hard enough each week.
Back to Purpose: I’m sure that by getting to
this stage of the article that you already have an idea but let’s clear
it up completely:
Strength, Beginner – anyone looking to stay in
shape without wanting to make major changes to their body.
Strength, Advanced – same as above but people
here have been doing the beginner regime for at least 6 months, constantly
under supervision of a trainer, or 1 year partially supervised. They have
learnt all the basic techniques and their body as well as their mind needs
the regular changes in training to keep stimulation there.
Power – very short duration sporting events, up
to 10 seconds.
Lean Body Mass – Body Builders and Body
Sculptors. People looking to try to put on some size.
Muscular Endurance – Athletes participating in
long distance events greater than 30 minutes in duration and people
looking for metabolic rate increases to induce post training fat burning.
Exercise to music classes like Body Pump, Pump, Body
Bar, etc., are all based upon this. 3-5 minutes of lifting a light weight
without stopping with minimal rest between 1 body part and the next. 1
song per body part, finish with stretching and if you have done it right,
with enough weight you get 2 hours of fat burning after the class as well
as a greater energy requirement every day which gives you even more fat
burning potential.
It all comes back to metabolic rate; the only way to
seriously change your shape for good while being safe for you body as a
whole is by increasing your metabolic rate. Liposuction, wrap treatments,
ultrasound and alike don’t work for the fat cells they leave behind
still have infinite expansion potential!
Now you know what can be done with the entire series of
lifts, go out and use them to achieve your New Year’s resolution.

IPGC TAGGS Golf from The Haven
Monday 14th January - Century Ban Chan (Bogey)
1st: Chuck Carrier, 2 up
2nd: Mo Bertrand, 1 up
3rd: Serge Straeten, All square
On an unusually full Century course, where the fairways
were teeming with still life, Chuck managed to at last squeeze out a win
after several close finishes in which he has yet to record a score of more
than 80 off his 8 handicap. Mo Bertrand stayed in contention until the
last hole but still kept Serge the traveling gourmet in third. Chuck also
managed the only two of the day to clean up in the two’s.
Prior to the prize giving back at The Haven, Richard
Livingston the resident PGA professional, welcomed back Patrick Scullion
from the darkest reaches of India where he is currently serving his time.
Wednesday 16th January - Khao Kheow (Stableford)
1st: Rick Bevington, 39 pts.
2nd: Al Rolnik, 37 pts.
3rd: Chuck Carrier, 36 pts. (cb 9 18)
4th: Bob Morrison, 36 pts. (cb 9 16)
Rick at last showed some of the form he usually expects
on his annual visit to Pattaya and playing very steadily succeeded in
keeping “Big Al” far enough behind to comfortably take the winner’s
trophy and the pot of gold. Once again Chuck played a round of 80 that was
evenly matched over the two nines to push the always-competitive Bob into
fourth place.
The two’s were shared between Bob Lindborg, Oradee
Kaesavane and Mark Campbell.
Richard welcomed back Doug Campbell from halfway round
the world, and Larry Ball from halfway round the Gulf.
Friday 18th January - Phoenix (Monthly Medal)
Ladies
1st: Lamud Lindborg, 69 (cb9 33, cb6 21)
2nd: Saranya Chaiyanont, 69 (cb9 33, cb6 21.3)
Gentlemen 1st Division
1st: Russell Finch, 68 (cb9 33.5)
2nd: Phil Groves, 68 (cb9 36)
3rd: Klaus Schackt, 72
2nd Division
1st: Harry Riley, 71
2nd: Al Rolnik, 74
3rd: Bob Lindborg, 76 (cb9 33)
4th: Jimmy Little, 76 (cb9 36)
5th: B.J. Smith, 76 (cb9 37)
Once again the TAGGS held their monthly medal at
Phoenix and played from the blue tees, which proved to be a tee too far
back for many, in addition the course was completely full of other golfers
not competing in the tournament, which made for a very long day in all
respects.
In the ladies division, Lamud again proved to be the
steadiest player, just pipping Ya by count back over the last six holes.
The second division was headed by the “Garden
Gnome” who continues to succeed following the change in his housekeeping
arrangements, no doubt due to now eating proper food and the reduction in
fluid intake. Big Al as usual was in the frame followed by a trio that was
only separated following an exhausting (for Richard that is) series of
count backs.
In the first Division “Pin Eye” at last returned to
the winner’s rostrum, just edging out Phil on count back. This follows a
fine run of form, which included a win in the Wayne Tischbern Memorial the
previous week. If you have a couple of hours to spare Russell will be
delighted to tell you how well he is striking the ball at the present
time.
"It were a grand

PSC Golf from the Cafe Kronborg
Monday 14 Jan - Treasure Hills
Just another day in paradise. Rising to the first rays
of the sun with a fuzzy head from a super night out, breakfast on the
balcony, plenty of black coffee, and watching the blue sea crisscrossed
with the wake of the boats picking up the happy tourists and speeding away
to exotic locations. Slowly driving along the seafront to the Kronborg to
be greeted by the happy, smiling face of the ‘Admiral’ (soon to be
demoted to stoker cause he ain’t found the golden rivet).
Air-conditioned bus to the course with a chance of a snooze to catch up on
lost sleep. Arrival at Treasure Hills, don’t bother with the clubs the
caddy (beauty as well too today) will take care, pay later the
receptionist isn’t in yet and nobody will run away as it’s only 430
baht. Change and down to the start to find bag & caddy, how about a
few practice putts first, nice stroke, lets get to it.
Kevin
Ward
First tee, good drive, walking down the fairway, caddy
in tow, the grass still damp from the nights dew and all is peace and
quiet only broken by the crack of club on ball, and early morning calls of
the birds. 18 holes spent in good company, then back to the clubhouse for
a hot shower and a cold beer and the chance to tell all the ‘if onlys’.
It doesn’t get any better than this. It were a grand day.
Oh! We also played a competition, seems a pity to spoil
the day by not winning, but the day was marked by an excellent round by
Kevin Ward (pic 1) who shot a gross 74 & net 70 on his first visit to
the course. He will be a danger in all upcoming gross competitions and is
here at least for the next year.
Results:
A flight
1st: Kevin Ward, net 70
2nd: Don Richardson, net 72
3rd: Ged Mason, net 74 on count back from Paul Huneker

points, Ged Mason came second on 36 points, Elias Magnisson third on 36
pts, and fourth Kevin Ward 36 pts. Lot of count backs.

Bosman 33 pts. Again lotsa count backs.

Rising Sun enjoys record
turnout
The Rising Sun golfers had a record turnout with 24
players going to Phoenix Country Club on Tuesday, January 15.
Rob Wilkin won the A flight with 33 points off his 10
handicap. Joe McArdle finished runner-up with 32 points off his 13
handicap.
Fred O’Connor won the B flight with 38 points off his
20 handicap. Don House from western Oz finished runner-up with 37 points.
Near pins: M4 Don House, M8 Granville Swanton, L2 Rab
McDonald and L7 Heinz Benz.
On Thursday, 19 Rising Sun golfers went to Khao Kheow.
A very tough and demanding day resulted in low scores, apart from winner
Tom Breslin, who carded 39 points. Joe McArdle finished runner-up with 30
points, getting the nod on count back over Rob McDonald, also with 30
points.
Near pins went to Dave Hughes, Bernard Bailey, Rob
McDonald and Fred O’Connor.
Yuzo conquers Bangpra
IPGC Pattaya Golf Society at the Bunker
On Tuesday, 15th January, the Bunker Boys travelled to
beautiful Bangpra for their weekly medal competition. At the moment the
course is a blaze of colour and it is a privilege to tread the lush
fairways and lightning fast greens.
It was an ominous sign for the Bunker Boys when they
saw the golfing samurai, Yuzo Nishikawa, arrive at the Bunker on his
bicycle, armed with nothing more than his driver, but this was a
smokescreen designed to confuse everyone, including the returning Guru,
Mick Jones. Yuzo proceeded to pedal his way to the top of the leader
board, easily winning the division one race with net 69.
In second place was Roy Mitchell on net 70 and one shot
back in third came Michael Dige, playing of a handicap of six and who
incredibly had sixteen birdie putts in his round!
The division two winner was Wee Jon Wood with net 72,
followed by Kevin Wilson and Chris John on 76.
Nobody qualified for the Bunker Super Sawng award as
the greens proved to be very difficult to master and therefore no two’s
were recorded.
The Bunker Banana Booby went to “Skinny”, Blair
Newton to his mates, for his gross 124. He also posed the question of the
week, “Where do the Japanese come from?” Answers, please, on a
postcard.
Mather and Meigh fire forty at Phoenix
On Friday, 18th January, another large group of Bunker
Boys chased the weekly Stableford prize at Phoenix Golf Club. The day was
hot and the course was in good condition even if the greens were slower
than those played at Bangpra and Eastern Star on the two previous days.
The field was cut at 22 and under and in division one
the scores were high. George Meigh and Dave Mather shared the honours with
scores of 40, closely followed by Per Ascham on 38.
The star of division two was Clive Harris who secured
only his second victory in more than a year with the Bunker Boys and his
level par 36, shared with Colin Morgan, was enough to see off the rest of
the group.
In third place was Jon Wood who shot 35 points.
George Meigh and Colin Morgan shared the Bunker Super
Sawng award with the first two’s of the week and the Bunker was engulfed
in mirth when the Banana Booby was presented to the Golfing Guru, Mick
Jones, for his valiant efforts to break into his own locker at the
clubhouse!
The previous day saw the inaugural monthly
Bunker-Cheers/Sugar Shack Challenge at Eastern Star and the scores were
absolutely tied at six points each at the end of the day. When individual
net scores were tallied there were only three shots separating the teams
after almost 1370 shots in all. Cheers took the trophy and have the honour
of gloating for this month, but as winning captain Stan “The Man” Axon
said afterwards, “I find it very difficult to boast of anything other
than sharing a great day with fifteen good friends!” This is indeed what
the Bunker Boys are all about.

A look ahead at the NFL Conference Championships
by Howie Reed
Year in and year out there’s a Cinderella in the NFL.
It defies all the “know it all’s”. Get invited to the Championship.
This year the slipper fit the new England Patriots (11-5) who were not
only a bad team last year but a lousy team through four game this year.
They started 1-3, lost their QB, and were going nowhere. Tom Brady steps
in, new team. They finish 10-2. Coach Bill Belichick has a simple
approach. Run the ball and don’t make mistakes. They made none in their
16-13 OT win against the Raiders in the snow, wind and cold of Foxboro.
Their defense is adequate, the running game is OK with the power of
Antowain Smith and the speed of JR Redmond and they are on a roll.
The Patriots real worry is that they travel to Heinz
Field in Pittsburgh for the Championship game. The Steelers, in
dismantling last year’s champs the Ravens 27-10, proved they are the
best team in the AFC. The win came without “The Bus” Jerome Bettis,
their “bread and butter” on the ground. “Famous Amos” Zereoue and
Chris Faumatu-Ma’Afala more than compensated combining for 154 yards on
the ground. Zereoue, pronounced Zer A WAY, got two TD’s. Kordell
Stewart’s stats were nothing to write home about (15-22 and 154) but he
didn’t make the costly mistakes. That and always operating with a short
field made their win a “walk-in the park.” The Steelers had five
drives of 51 yards or less. In the words of NFL commentator John Madden,
“That’s a snowball running downhill gathering moss.”
The Patriots are in “deep stuff.” The only chink in
the Steelers’ amour may be kick returner Troy Edwards (La Tech). Against
the Ravens he was brilliant returning the ball but couldn’t hold it. The
Steelers were able to recover all four of his fumbles. That may be the
only advantage the Patriots have. Their star of the “Snow Bowl”,
kicker Adam Vinatieri will find it difficult scoring when kicking into the
Bermuda Triangle that is the open end of Heinz Field. Kickers only
connected on 51% during the year. The Pat’s other “ace in the hole”
referee Walt Coleman darn sure won’t be there. The Steelers should have
an easy time with New England. It is written that, “In Heinz Field when
you’re in a pickle it’s hard to play catch-up.”
The Rams and Eagles game is easy to digest. For the
Rams you stop Donnavan McNabb, you stop the Eagles. Chicago was going to
make McNabb move to his left. Yea, that worked really well. McNabb
accounted for 299 of the 336 yards for the Eagles and a 33-19 win at
Chicago. McNabb was 20-40 for 266 with 2 TDs. His 8 rushes for 37 yards
was just icing on the cake. The Eagles defense is allowing only 8 points a
game. The Eagles “D” Backs can be beat, especially with the pass
across the middle. That’s the Rams cup of tea. Toss it short. Let speedy
receivers run free.
These two teams played opening day. The Rams prevailed
20-17 in a game the Eagles could have sent to overtime by falling on the
ball. Two fumbles allowed the Rams to score 14 points with drives of 12
and 30 yards. The Packers, losers 45-17, had a “helping” of Ram D. 6
interceptions for 161 yards, and a fumble recovery. “The Rams are the
best team in football.” There’s a reason. Coach Lovie Smith and the
defense. When the Rams get the ball they either pass you silly or run
Marshall Faulk down your throat. They are a basketball team running a
pressure defense on both sides of the ball. If the Eagles play error free
football, control the clock and can somehow stay patient they have a
chance. If they can stop “The Greatest Show on Turf” it’s possible
they can pull the upset.
The Square Ring
by Howie Reed
Bangkok, which had seemed like a “Desert of
Boxing”, has had its second major card of the year recently. The
subtitle of this one was, “Let’s invite some Filipino’s to Land of
Smiles and kick some ‘booty’”. WBA #15 and PABA lightweight champ
Prawet Singwancha (13-2-1) won in six over Filipino Renado Jonas. All
scorecards were 60-54. WBO #12 and WBO Asia-Pacific super bantam champ Sod
Looknongyantoy (4-0) out pointed Filipino Fedrito Laurente. Sod was sent
to the canvas in round 4 but got up for the win. Pramuansak Phosuwan (3-0)
knocked out Filipino Julius Occopra with a right hook in 8 to win the
vacant WBO Asia-Pacific superfly title. ABCO lightfly champ Pikmy
Muangchaiyaphum (14-2-1) knocked out Chaisit Twingym in round 2. What the
heck are two Thai’s doing fighting each other?
Pitchit Siriwat (25-2) got the chance to knock off
Nicaragua’s Rosendo Alvarez (31-2-1, 20 KOs) and capture the WBA Jr.
Flyweight Title again last Sunday morning. Siriwat held the title only to
lose it to Richard Lopez, who is considered the best little man in the
world. The key for a Thailand win here was that the ex-champ had to jab,
and move while staying away from the power of Alvarez. He did neither but
for a while got away with standing and trading punches. After the sixth
round the champ held a slim lead on all judges and the Pattaya Mail
scorecards. Between rounds Siriwat’s corner man was heard to say,
through an interrupter, “Think about your wife.” If you’re ever
training a Thai fighter don’t use that speech as a motivational tool.
Late in the 7 th Siriwat was
dropped with a plethora of punches set up by the former champion consuming
a bevy of right hands. The truth is that he ate right hand like a
“chocoholic” at a Hershey plant. Alvarez would cruse the first minute
of each round then would turn up the steam. Finally, with just 50 seconds
left in the 12th Siriwat went
down for the second and last time as the referee stepped in and stopped
things.
Sugar Shane Mosley (38-0) had done everything but fight
someone with ability since he won the title in June of 2000 from Oscar
DeLaHoya. He’s become the “good guy” of boxing and become a PR
man’s dream. While a large segment of the boxing public are ready to
crown him the “best” pound-for-pound fighter today, there are others,
this writer among them, that wants to see him actually fight someone with
talent. The “aginers” get their wish Sunday morning Pattaya time when
he defends his WBS Welter title against undefeated Vernon Forrest (33-0).
This match doesn’t draw into the “dream” category but it is a couple
of steps ahead of good. Forrest defeated Mosley for a spot on the Olympic
team. Sugar Shane would like nothing better than to provide Forrest his
first professional loss.
Mike Tyson’s wife is suing him for divorce on grounds
of adultery. Tyson, from his training camp where he’s getting ready for
his April 6 date with Lennox Lewis, has let it be known that he’s suing
her for “incompatibility”. Seems whenever he was having sex she
wasn’t there. That would make her incompatible. Silly? Sure but it’s a
living.
UNICEF to benefit from inaugural 'Pee-Wee' Charity Golf Invitational
The inaugural ‘Pee-Wee’ Charity Golf Invitational
is scheduled to take place at Eastern Star Resort on Friday February 1st.
Exclusively for up to 45 keen young 7-14 year old golfers, this Charity
Golf Invitational, over 18 holes in four age divisions, is being staged
the day before the 2nd Khun Anand Panyarachun Charity Golf Invitational
for UNICEF.
The organizers saw this as an opportunity to seek
individual sponsorship for the young golfers and thereby raise money for
UNICEF. Former Prime Minister Anand Panyarachun, who is also the
Ambassador for UNICEF in Thailand, will be attending the prize giving
ceremony in the Masters Conference Hall to present trophies and prizes to
the winners. All proceeds from this event, and the Anand Panyarachun
Charity Golf Invitational the day after, will benefit disadvantaged
children in Thailand through UNICEF projects.
The challenging Robert Trent Jones Jnr. course at
Eastern Star Resort is a good place for Peewee golfers to start, using
special fairway tees and each Peewee ‘Three-Ball’ accompanied by a
non-playing adult golfer to supervise and advise on Rules and Etiquette.
PGA professional Glyn Jenkins will also be on hand to supervise overall,
the activity on the course.
Schools on the Eastern Seaboard are being invited to
enter their junior golfers and raise sponsorship support for them, related
to individual performance on the day.
Mike Franklin, tournament director for both events,
commented, “Having the opportunity to run a peewee golf tournament was
good in itself, but the addition of the charity element linked to the Khun
Anand Panyarachun Charity Golf Invitational for UNICEF is a real bonus. We
hope that local schools will encourage their young golfers to take part,
and for parents and friends to give them encouragement through generous
sponsorship support.
“Grateful thanks to Cathay Pacific Airways,
Shenanigans and Eastern Star Resort for organizing and supporting the
Pee-Wee Charity Golf Invitational Tournament, and to recently retired
Cathay executive, Paul Horsting, for coming up with the Pee-Wee concept
and piloting the idea to reality.
“It is never too early to start to play golf, and
this level of activity introduces these very young players to the game in
the best way possible.”
Any company, or individual, wishing to sponsor the
players or donate prizes, should contact Mike Franklin, by e-mail at [email protected],
or by phone/fax at 038 731144.
Full details with entry form, and player sponsorship
forms, are available at Eastern Star Resort and at Shenanigans Pattaya, or
