Students from Pattaya City School 7 were the first to learn good dental health care as part of a city-wide project instituted by city hall. Mayor Pairat Suthithamrongsawat presided over the opening exhibit at School #7 on February 14.

The dental exhibit is to be presented at all 10 city schools and other schools within the city education system. During the opening, Kanda Nawong, sanitation and health section leader, stated that statistics collected during a recent survey in city school primary grades found that 44.5% of the students had cavities, and almost 29% were permanent teeth with cavities.

Although Pattaya has no shortage of dental clinics, sanitation and health section believes this indicates that the high rate of cavities in school children is an indication that preventive care is lacking in the home environment.

The dental exhibit is designed to increase student awareness on the importance of proper care for teeth. Dental hygiene was stressed, with an emphasis that teeth should be brushed after each meal and certainly at least twice a day.

The exhibit included a number of contests promoting dental care with games on stage, and prizes for individuals most knowledgeable in the proper brushing technique, for having the prettiest and healthiest teeth, and for the best picture demonstrating proper brushing.

GIS celebrates opening of new sports field

Last Saturday, students, parents and staff at Garden International School celebrated the grand opening of their new sports field by hosting a football tournament.

Built over the summer break and complete with a proper drainage system, the GIS sports field is now one and half times bigger than before and is large enough for a 200 metre running track.

The ribbon cutting ceremony took place at 9 a.m. Helle Rantzen, president of the Garden School Association (GSA) thanked the numerous amount of support from all sectors of the Garden community for making this momentous day happen.

‘Fun Football’ set the tone of the day, as children from Reception to Year 3 participated in various dribbling techniques and shooting games with the football. “What’s the time, Mr Wolf?” was most definitely the favourite game of the day.

Students from Primary and Secondary sectors of the school were involved in a ‘World Cup’ competition. The children were placed in different ‘countries’ and played a round robin match. In the Primary competition, ‘Italy’ managed to reign supreme and beat off contenders from ‘Belgium’, ‘England’ and ‘Canada’.

As for the Secondary students, it was a tight competition; however, ‘Brazil’ stayed on top to overcome ‘United Kingdom’ and ‘Germany’. Excellent football skills as well as high levels of sportsmanship were demonstrated from all of the students throughout the day.

The ‘football-fest’ continued with the Seniors playing against the local Pala Temple School in Ban Chang. Despite the heat of the day, spirits were high. GIS defended and played extremely well; however, Pala’s team was just too good on the day! Hamburgers at half time did not deter Pala from their determination or stamina. Final score 5-3.

The final match of the day involved the parents and staff of GIS against Foster Wheeler. It was a tough and exciting match as both teams continued to attack and defend successfully. After the first third of the match, the score was still deadlocked at 0-0. The first goal for GIS came from the boot of the only female on the team, head of PE, Miss Sue Burke. Foster Wheeler, however, were quick to retaliate to equal the score yet again. It was a match of highs and lows as near misses from both teams resulted in the crowd ‘oohing’ and ‘sighing’ continuously. Despite two goals from GIS parent Mark Harrison, Foster Wheeler were able to just take the lead in the final minutes of the game. Final score 4-3.

GIS have promised a re-match with Foster Wheeler and look forward to hosting many more matches in the future.
