Senator Meechai Viravaidhya, well known for his efforts in family planning and AIDS prevention in Thailand, is to be the special guest speaker at a dinner hosted by the British Chamber of Commerce Eastern Seaboard at the Royal Cliff Beach Resort Hotel on June 28.

Also discussed at the committee meeting of the BCCT last week, held at the Royal Cliff, were upcoming events scheduled in the region for the remainder of the year. “We will start providing services for the members, as we used to do. Membership is on the increase for the Eastern Seaboard,” he added.

The event will be of local interest, as Senator Meechai, who also owns the famed Cabbages and Condom Restaurant and Resort in Pattaya, will speak on ‘How big business in Thailand can help the rural sector’.

Hard Rock announces its new wedding packages for young lovers

‘Love is in the Air’ at the Hard Rock Hotel Pattaya! The hotel management recently announced, in style, their new wedding packages for those willing to tie the knot.

The grand announcement “Wedding Fair and Fashion Show” featured many of the hotel’s partners in this new venture, a concept new to the region.

Traditional white was highly featured on the catwalk.

Various sponsor booths were set up to demonstrate the type of services the new packages can provide on ‘that special day’. Whether it’s traditional Thai Style with all the trimmings or an underwater affair complete with scuba tanks, or a modern contemporary deal complete with rock ‘n’ roll band, couples looking to tie the knot can do it at the Hard Rock.

During the fair, one of the country’s best-known hair stylists, Pasin Choopan dropped in to demonstrate some easy ways to have a ‘good hair day’ for that special event.

More modern, seductive wedding attire was also paraded on the catwalk.

Following the fair, an afternoon party and fashion show was put on with many of Chonburi’s local ‘Hi-So’ attending. Then, a superb buffet preceded the evening’s main event, the Fashion Show.

The models on the runway featured a wide range of wedding apparel, from the many traditional styles of long, flowing satin and silk dresses and tuxedos to a seductive fusion of modern contemporary and jazzy styles.

Teaming up with the Hard Rock to introduce this new concept to the marriage market are the province’s largest wedding studio, Modern Bride Studio, which provides both wedding attire for men and women as well as photography, plus the Wedding Gallery, Bella Nina and Wild Orchid Cosmetics, Epson Digital Studio, Calisto Salon and the Central Gift Registry.

The packages on offer range from ‘Loving You’, which goes for less than 55,000 baht, through to ‘Love Me Tender’, ‘Unforgettable’ and at the top end, ‘Endless Love’. Hard Rock will also provide services such invitations, photography, video, beauty needs and limo service, and if your party is big enough, they will even hire out the Hard Rock Bus.

The “Golden Fifty” Charity Balloon Challenge

2002 is the Golden Jubilee year of HM Queen Elizabeth II and marks the 50th anniversary of Her Majesty’s Accession. While events celebrating the Jubilee are taking place in the United Kingdom throughout the year, a particular focus has been given to the weekend of 1st and 2nd June.

The “Golden Fifty” Charity Balloon Challenge is an informal private initiative that aims to mark the Jubilee locally, and reflect the long-standing links between Thailand and the United Kingdom, with a sponsored ‘friendly’ hot air balloon flying mini-competition to take place over the weekend of 1st and 2nd June.

Two hot air balloons representing Thailand and the United Kingdom will take off from the Eastern Sports Flying Club near Pattaya with two goals in mind: to accumulate the most flying time within a 5.0 nautical mile radius of the airfield, and to make the longest individual flight. On each day, weather permitting, the teams will have potential opportunities to fly in the early morning and late afternoon.

Representing Thailand will be Thai balloon pilots Chan Trakarnvanich, also the world’s youngest hot air airship pilot, and Suthichai Malikao, and an official timekeeper.

The British team will comprise pilot David Tuck, a former assistant press secretary to the Queen now resident in Bangkok, and an official timekeeper from the British Embassy.

Reflecting the friendly nature of the competition, the two teams are seeking sponsorship to be calculated on the basis of total flying time amassed by both balloons over the course of the weekend. Suggested sponsorship rates are Bt50 per minute for companies and Bt5.0 per minute for individuals. A typical flight lasts approximately 30-60 minutes.

All monies raised are to be donated to the Sai Jai Thai Foundation under the patronage of HM The King. The choice of Sai Jai Thai, which was established to assist Thai service veterans, reflects the identification of SSAFA Forces Help in the United Kingdom as one of six Official Jubilee Charities.

To register as a sponsor, contact by fax on 0 2712 2077 or by post to 38/1 Soi Saengchan, Sukhumvit 42, Bangkok 10110. For further information please contact David Tuck on 0 1440 2131.

Dusit Resort’s Food & Beverage team receives special treat

Salim Khoury, head bartender of the Savoy Hotel in London, recently gave the Dusit Resort’s Food & Beverage team a special treat.

Hi three-hour cocktail training session, attended by the hotel’s 15 bartenders and service attendants of various outlets, gave great insight into the fine art of cocktail preparation, American Bar style.

Salim Khoury has been in the employ of the famous “The Savoy London”, working at the American Bar since 1969. Salim Khoury won Barman of the Year 4 times in the UK. Some of his tips for all young bartenders are:

- Use only good liquor to mix drinks in front of your guest.

- Start preparing the cocktail with the cheapest ingredients first; if you make a mistake, it doesn’t cost as much.

- Always keep your working place clean, no matter how much business you are doing.

- Always remember guests’ names and anticipate their needs, but keep a professional distance to respect their privacy.

German Thai Chamber very upbeat in forecasts

The German Thai Chamber of Commerce had their Stammtisch at the Moon River Pub in the Thai Garden Resort last weekend. With over 60 of the members turning out for the evening it was a successful event for the chamber.

No, he isn’t singing karaoke - this is Stefan Buerkle announcing the Stammtisch.

Bangkok members who were not conversant with the developments on the Eastern Seaboard were taken by bus for a tour through the Eastern Seaboard during the day, to see the level of German investment in this region. One of the principal stops was at Grohe Siam, the manufacturer of high quality bathroom fittings and hardware.

Stefan Buerkle, the business investment advisor for the German Thai Chamber, said that business estimates have had to be revised upwards, the Thai economy again looking very strong, both from the point of view of exports and subsequent incoming German investment. Financial year to date was much improved over 2001, although this was also a reflection of the world economy. However, he felt that this economic upward trend would continue well into 2003.

Australian Thai Chamber as safe as a bank?

AustCham, the snappy new name for the Australian Thai Chamber of Commerce held their Seaboard Sundowners networking evening at the Marriott Resort and Spa last weekend. A healthy turn-out of Sandgropers and Banana Benders and others from the different states in Australia got together for a convivial evening over some Aussie white (or red) wine, with the new players such as Glenn Mills from Allied Pickfords passing out so many business cards he ran out one third into the evening.

Steele Lambrinos addresses the audience at the Australian Thai Chamber of Commerce Seaboard Sundowners networking evening at the Marriott Resort and Spa last weekend.

The evening was sponsored in part by Australia’s oldest bank, Westpac, which began its corporate life as the Bank of New South Wales. The chief representative of the bank, Gary White, was introduced to the members and guests by Steele Lambrinos, the Australian in charge of Kirwan Industries, these days a big player in the automotive support industry on the Eastern Seaboard. Gary White said he was confident of the long term security in Thailand, citing the better infrastructure in this country as one of the reasons for the bank’s continuing presence here. Despite one other Australian bank withdrawing this last week, Westpac was strengthening its position and was offering both corporate and personal banking services for expatriate Australians in Asia, as well as banking facilities for Thai industries wishing to expand into Australia, and for Australians wishing to invest in Thailand.
