Woodruffes win better ball 3-way count back
By Mike Franklin
Im and Ray Woodruffe once again showed their consistent
form by returning 43 Stableford points and a good back nine to win a
three-way count back in Shenanigans Pairs Better Ball on May 28th at
Eastern Star.
Their 23 points on the back nine were enough to beat
two other 43 point scores from Steve & Toy Ryser, and Mam Trayling
& Ali Kirkwood, with back nines of 19 and 18 points respectively.
Im
and Ray Woodruffe scored 43 Stableford points to win the Shenanigans Pairs
Better Ball on May 28th at Eastern Star.
Im also featured in the technicals by being nearest the
pin on #4, which she has done on two consecutive outings. Arthur Hancock
was closest on #8, Lamun Hanley on #12 and Banjob Franklin on #15.
Aree Chusri had the longest putt on #9 and nobody
claimed a putt on #18.
The weather was cooler than of late with a strong wind
and plenty of cloud cover. Cobra Gold was audibly in evidence in the skies
and added to the excitement of the round.
Back at Shenanigans, the now established prize giving
party ensued with the ladies downing a varied assortment of brightly
colored drinks and generally having a good time. Mark Meuhr was welcomed
as a new member, and a farewell to legionnaire Philippe Berra who returns
to Switzerland until the autumn.
Tuesday June 11th is the next Shenanigans outing for a
Pairs Scramble, so sign-up early in Pairs for that.
World Cup no excuse for bad diet, smoking, say health experts
By Busaba Sivasomboon
Associated Press Writer
Thai soccer fans be warned: viewing the upcoming World
Cup on television is no excuse for unhealthy behavior such as chain
smoking and eating junk food.
A Thai health expert sounded the alarm Thursday over
the prospect of couch potatoes and other sports fans following the action
while stuffing themselves with junk food, chased with beer and topped off
with a smoke.
“Soccer fans, especially teen-agers, might flock
together in pubs, bars or restaurants to cheer their favorite teams, and
at the same time risk their health by drinking alcoholic beverages and
smoking,” said Dr. Hatai Chitanondh, president of Thailand Health
Promotion Institute.
“We will also encourage die-hard soccer fans to
refrain from eating unhealthy food such as potato chips and popcorn,” he
told The Associated Press.
His observation followed up a suggestion Wednesday by
Deputy Public Health Minister Surapong Suebwonglee, who called on World
Cup viewers to drink pure water or herbal drinks, instead of liquor or
beer, and refrain from noshing on sugary or salty snacks.
“People who consume liquor, beer and snacks tend to
suffer high blood pressure and other illnesses in the future,” he was
quoted as saying by the official Thai News Agency.
Hatai warned that smoking in some public places is not
just a bad idea - it’s against the law.
He said he would ask for the cooperation of the Health
Ministry and the police in strictly enforcing a law prohibiting smoking in
enclosed places “because we expect Thai soccer fans to smoke more while
they are watching the matches.”
Hatai said that owners of establishments that let their
customers flout the law are subject to fines of up to 20,000 baht and a
one-month jail term, while the smokers themselves could face a 2,000 baht
penalty and a month in jail.
“If the government enforces such a law, I think all
pubs, restaurants and bars will face huge losses because many customers
will not go to places where they cannot smoke,” said Kompiya Rojanavej,
a self-employed businessman and soccer fan. “I think this is a
nonsensical action.”
Hanley, Hurst & Humberstone best in Seniors & Ladies May Open
By Mike Franklin
All the winners returned scores of thirty-eight points
or better in the Diana Group Seniors and Ladies May Open at Pattaya
Country Club.
Lamun Hanley with 39 Stableford points won the
well-represented Ladies section, just beating Lamud Chaidara’s
thirty-eight points.
In the 50-64 Seniors category, John Hurst produced the
best score of the day with forty points and Chris John with thirty-eight
was runner-up.
For the over 65 Super Seniors, young Ken Humberstone
returned thirty-nine points with Ray Woodruffe in second place with the
all-category runner-up score of thirty-eight points. Ray won on count-back
from David Earthrowl.
Near pins were claimed by Chris John, Banjob Franklin,
Toy Ryser and Lamun Hanley; and the long putts by Mick O’Meara and Tony
Baker.
Back at the Green Bottle Mike Franklin welcomed ‘new
faces’ Terry Sylvester, Tosh Demesher, Tony Baker, Ray Woodruffe and
Nora Haugsjordet to the Diana Monthly Open, and announced the next event
taking place on Thursday June 27th - amazingly a day when no World Cup
matches are being televised! The weather was good and John Cole with
Richard Livingston were even better.
Ron and Karl’s big day out
Pattaya Sports Club Fishing
Ron and Karl James went fishing on Thursday May 23 and
came home with a fantastic catch. Fishing under the J & M Bar mantle
they set off with Captain Dang for an area close to Pattaya Park. There
they landed a large grouper, a jack, a barracuda and four crevallies.
Ron
and Karl James show off their big, good eating catch of the day.
They then set out for Koh Pi where they stayed for the
rest of the day. There they just could not stop catching fish, and hoping
to have a little respite they tried to have a catnap. Not to be, as the
reel suddenly screamed out and they knew they were into a big one, which
turned out to be a King Mackerel weighing in at 33.5 pounds, the best
mackerel this season.
The day’s fishing ended with a catch including the
following: Queen fish 2 at 6.5 lbs, 6 crevallies at 2 lbs, 1 barracuda at
6.6 lbs 1 jack 2 lbs and a sting ray not to count. All in all a fantastic
day out for the James family.

PH3 Run 951
Well here we go again on a Monday looking forward to
another hash run! I was just about to start getting ready at 3 p.m., when
all of a sudden, there was Chicken person standing at my door. Hurry,
Hurry he said, you have got to drive the beer truck because Chicken Nugget
has got to go to the hospital. What’s up I asked whilst throwing a few
things into a bag? We have been to the doctor and it’s been suggested he
goes in, okay. On the way we will load the beer truck and get the ice. By
now it’s 4 p.m., after a 20-minute drive and Chicken Fellow asking the
kid repeatedly, James, what do you want, hospital or go to the run? We
arrived at the A-site. A good turn out as usual, late sign ups called.
The circle was called and more new shoes than I have
ever seen were christened. Spunk Bubble the hare was then called in to
explain the run and off we go, plenty of checks, not the most exiting of
runs, but it was ok. The first runner was in after 19 minutes; I was well
back due to getting lost after chasing down several false trails trying to
find the cards for special prizes at the FT signs.
Once the circle was called, Ewok did the raffle, and
then it was time for the hares to bite the ice. Spunk Bubble who is very
camera shy threatened Tampax that he would eat his camera if he kept
taking pictures. Then a guy called Tiny who was quite the opposite picked
up Fini and shook him about like a rag doll. Lots of Americans on the ice,
then virgins and sponsors were dealt with. King Yao Yao and Sir Chicken F
were iced because Queen Stella said John sang like a goat. It was then the
turn of the choir lead by Big Nosed B along with hand picked dancing girls
who were encouraged by a bare-chested Boy George. I think it was
anniversary time then with John S II getting his 50th run mug after 10
years of hashing, AH got his 100th run mug, then I got my 250th run mug
which is a really nice mug. Spunk Bubble did his 10th hare today and he
duly received his 10th hare shirt.
Sir Airhead was iced for being mistaken as a first time
tourist to Pattaya. Then it was new name time. Two guys, first one was
easy with the crowd voting for Texas Camel F. The second was a tie between
Diamond Head and Hoola Hips. Yes, you guessed it. Diamond Head Hoola Hips
he was named. Then it was time for RA Sir Chicken F, he called me in as
hash hero for helping out in his time of need. He immediately called me
back in for a story about black stockings bought for a friend. I can’t
remember a lot more after all my down downs but going back to the TQ 2
where the hot dogs just kept coming, and then later, more pizza than
people, a really good night, thanks Spunk Bubble. Oh, by the way, Chicken
Nugget made a full recovery after finding some girls to chase round all
night.

The weather was just beautiful, the sea was just right,
and the fishing was wonderful. What more can any fisherman ask for?
Frank
Collins and Carl Engel showing the day’s catch.
Wednesday May 15 Frank Collins and Carl Engel entered
the Pattaya Sports Club Monthly Deep Sea Fishing Tournament as the Fish
& Trips Team. Unable to locate the mai mai fish last week, and the
large bill fish have not arrived in our waters as yet, they went for the
traditional reef fish and had a great day. Steady fishing all day, even
had two fish on at a time.
At the end of the day the score was one 22 lb. king
mackerel, five pompano 9 to 14 lb. each, three barracuda 4 to 6 lbs each,
one snapper 7 lbs., one queen fish 4 lbs. and two rays 10 lbs. each for a
day’s total catch of 104 lbs. of good eating game fish and 20 lbs. of

ladies team of four.
After the practice games on Thursday the serious
matches were held on Friday, and on the evening The Bowling Green won four
matches to two with an aggregate score of 110-72.
After the game all the contestants enjoyed a delicious
three-course dinner in the clubhouse where the presentation of the winners
and runners up medals were given.
The Bowling Green would like to thank the members of
the R.S.A.B.A. and all their players for making it a tremendously
enjoyable two-day event
Next week it’s back to the first and second
divisions.

Mick O'Connor drinks from
the Mug
P.S.C. Golf from The Cafe Kronborg
Thursday
the 30 May - Phoenix C.C. (Kronborg Monthly Mug - Stroke)
The build up to the mug went well with many people
thinking they had a good chance, and with a strong entry from the Three
Sisters, it was not impossible they would not continue their fine form of
late which has seen both Bob Moberg and Herbie triumph, and indeed only a
late charge by Jim Flanagan last month pipped Herbie on the post for a
repeat.
The
Admiral (who also won at Great Lakes on Monday) presents the Mug to Mick
O’Connor.
The challenge from the Kronborg regulars looked strong
with Howie vowing to lose his tag as the ‘nearly’ man and Dave
Richardson noticeably leaving the round table early as he had been showing
fine form of late and thought he had a chance. The ‘ever improving’
Mick O’Connor who despite playing very well of late has just started to
go through one of those dips we all go through and was most despondent.
The only question was would one of the favourites win or would a complete
outsider come out of the woodwork.
As said the Kronborg Mug, put up for the competition by
‘Mien Host Bjarne’, is the premier monthly competition from the
Kronborg and to the winner is not only the prestige of winning but the
right to have the mug filled once during the following month by all the
competitors. This is the only presentation held back at the Kronborg so
the winner usually gets a good start on his free beers; however, last
month the winner was a teetotaller so water all around. This month was
destined to be won by someone who could take advantage of the spoils of
his efforts.
When the results started to come in, it soon became
apparent that this was not to be a month of low scores, probably due to
the fact that Mountain & Lake nines were used, but a good score under
par would have a chance.
Straight from the bell Mick O’Connor playing from the
first group had shaken off his poor form of late and set a target to be
shot at of net 69, and despite a fine round of net 69 also by Barry Kerr
(beaten on count back) and Ebrahim and Herbie pushing him, Mick managed to
hang on and keep his ‘Ever Improving’ title.
The only question to be decided is if Howie (the nearly
man) Forrest has lost his pseudonym because he won the B flight. Results:
Winner of the Mug: Mick O’Connor net 69.
A flight (0 to 20): Barry Kerr net 69, second Ebrahim
net 72 beating Herbie also net 72 into third place on count back.
B flight (21 Up): Howie Forrest net 73, second Dave
Richardson net 75 beating Pete Galle also net 75 into third place on count
back.
Near pins: M4 Bert Ekstrom, M8 Brian Holden, L2 Barry
Kerr, and L7 Bert Ekstrom
Monday the 27th May -
Great Lakes (Stableford)
Great Lakes was host to a Stableford competition on a
course, the condition of which could only be judged as fair as the rough
was really rough, but the fairways and the greens were fine. The result of
this was that the ‘short’ hitters bombed around the course, whilst the
long hitters had trouble keeping it on the fairway.
Dave Richardson took first place with 38 points, Ricky
Ferguson came second with 35 points and Barry Kerr came third with 33
points (all ‘short’ hitters).
Trevor and Moe have lifetime bests
IPGC TAGGS Golf from The Haven
Monday
27th May - Century Ban Chan (Bogey)
1st: Trevor Schirmer, 2 up
2nd: Barry Winton, 1 up
3rd: Bob Lindborg, 1 down
On an unusually quiet bank holiday at the picturesque
and challenging course at Ban Chan, the contenders reveled in their rounds
that were played as if they were the only golfers in Thailand, and swept
round the two nines in under four hours. As is normal at the moment on
most of the local courses, the greens were a bit wooly, necessitating a
very firm putting stroke to get the ball up to the hole on nearly all the
greens.
Trevor mastered the conditions slightly better than
most and just edged out the in-form Barry to secure his first win during
his current campaign in the Land of Smiles.
Unusually at Century, there were no winners in the twos
and the pot was therefore carried forward to Burapha.
Back at The Haven, Richard Livingston the resident PGA
professional welcomed new member Dermot Keith from Scotland who had come
to Thailand to watch his national team in The World Cup. Unfortunately he
had bought his flight a little too early in an effort to get a ticket
before they were sold out. In the event he had the white Cross of St
David, which had been dyed into his blue hair, shaved off which enabled
him to take his place on the first tee without comment.
Wednesday 29th May -
Burapha East (stroke play)
1st: Trevor Schirmer, 59
2nd: Moe Bertrand, 65
3rd: Doug Campbell, 68
4th: Harry Riley, 70 cb9 32
5th: Mike Davies, 70 cb9 33.5
It is not often in a medal round that you shoot 68 and
do not even make it into second place, but this was the fate of Doug who
had his best competition round for some time and still came up short by
nine strokes. It must have been even more surprising for Moe, who fired a
lifetime best of gross ninety and missed out by six. Moe stood on the last
green needing a two putt for that first score in the eighties, but
unfortunately nerves just got the better of him as he took his first three
putt of an otherwise most memorable round.
They were both upstaged by Trevor, who having just had
a series of lessons from Richard and coming off a win in the previous
tournament, was firing on all twelve cylinders and shot a gross forty over
each of the front and back nines, to record his lifetime best, and take
the winners place by a street. He attributed his stylish win to his
teaching guru (20%) and his own ability (80%), together with the fact
that, now that he has sold the sheep farm in Australia he can concentrate
on golf and not be sidetracked by any romantic yearnings whilst away from
home.
Wee Harry won the twos, including the carry over, on
his own which together with his 4th prize made it a very worthwhile day
out.
Prior to the prize giving, Richard welcomed back Gordon
McKnight. But this time he was unable to take home a prize as he normally
does on his visits to The Haven.
Friday 29th May -
Eastern Star (Stableford)
1st: Phil Groves, 36
2nd: Gordon Langtry, 33
3rd: B.J. Smith, 32
It is no surprise when a quality player wins at Eastern
Star, as the course always demands the best technique to conjure shots
from the very tight fairways into greens that do not take kindly to shots
that are not struck cleanly and crisply. This again proved to be the case
as Phil used the full bag of clubs to squeeze out a level par round and
lead the field by three clear shots and show why he is one of the better
proponents of the game. He was trailed by Gordon, who is now starting to
show some promise, having forsworn all other cultural activities other
than golf except for following the efforts of the USA team in the World
Cup. B.J. made up the winners podium on the day, whilst beating Trevor,
who succumbed to an over-celebration of his previous outing.
Back at The Haven Richard welcomed new members John
Wassall from Shrewsbury in England and Larry Hall from the USA. Newcomer
John Wassall took the twos on his own to ensure his return for the next
outing and another bite at “money for old rope”.
Big Ian plunders huge win
IPGC Pattaya Golf Society at the Bunker
The Bunker Boys are becoming depleted as a result of
overseas visits, visa runs, and injuries but it did not stop thirteen
hardy souls from tackling one of the toughest courses in the area on
Tuesday, 28th May. Treasure Hill Golf Club has a reputation for being a
“man-eater” and proved to be as tough as its tradition.
In the one division of medal play only Big Ian Phillips
managed to stick in the throat of the beast whilst all others were being
consumed. Ian returned an admirable score of net 71, easily enough to beat
Roy Mitchell and Charlie Chen, his nearest rivals, with net 81.
Elsewhere players were recording double figures on
their cards, bemoaning their misfortunes and Alan Alexander huffed and
puffed around the course, picking his ball up on the last when he missed a
simple par putt, unaware that his score would still have been good enough
for second place. The “silly billy” was rewarded with the Bunker
Banana Booby for this slip. No player recorded a two on their cards and so
the treasured Super Sawng award was kept back.
Imagine the relief back at the Bunker when the
returning combatants were greeted by a surprise visit from the Guru, Mick
Jones. “There is a Buddha!” one was heard to mutter as, one by one,
spirits rose after such a tough experience.
Tight at the top at Siam
On Friday, 31st May, the “duchess” amongst local
courses, Siam Country Club, played host to the Bunker boys and ladies in
their weekly Stableford competition. More than two dozen golfers competed
in three divisions, one of which was exclusively for the ladies.
The very dry and dusty course was undergoing some
extensive maintenance work and the notoriously slow greens were virtually
unplayable as a result of heavy spiking and sanding. Putts bounced en
route to the holes, skidded into aeration holes and generally added to the
frustrations of the day!
In division two Les Winch and Bryn Jones overcame these
problems to fire 38 points each and carry the day, whilst in division one
Roy Mitchell and John Hanley tied with 35 points each to take the prize.
The exclusive ladies’ division saw Lamud Chaidara and
Lamun Hanley share the honours with 38 points each.
Unsurprisingly, for the third competition in
succession, no two was recorded and all eyes will be on Pattaya Country
Club in the next tournament to see if the Bunker Super Sawng award can be
won.
The course itself was a contender for the Bunker Banana
Booby but after discounting John Hanley for his very late return to the
Bunker with eight scorecards it was awarded to Prasan Boonsiri, of Khun
John’s restaurant, for his last place score of 24 points. It is hoped
that the “duchess” will recover soon and be restored to her former
glory.

The Square Ring
Special Report
by Howie Reed
The Sunday sun moves through the skies over Pattaya
Beach. The seaside resort is waking up after the typical Saturday Night.
It’s not just another day in paradise. At the Haven on Soi 13 there’ll
be a “Fighting Breakfast” where for 100 baht (US$2.35) you can eat
till you drop. In the words of my late father, “you pitch till you
win.” At the back of Tim’s the snooker games have stopped. The World
Cup in Japan/ South Korea is on hold until night matches featuring
Japan-Russia, Mexico-Ecuador and Costa Rica-Turkey. In Memphis Tennessee
USA more than 21,000 will shake off a night on Beale Street (blue’s,
booze and ribs) to enter Pyramid Arena where $2,400 ringside tickets are
the order of the day. They’ll pack the 32 story third largest pyramid in
the world, taller than either the Taj Mahal or the Statue of Liberty, to
watch the most anticipated boxing match since Ali-Frazer I or II. Mike
Tyson (49-3-0, 43 KOs) and World Heavyweight Champion Lennox Lewis
(39-2-1, 30 KOs) will finally meet in the ring.
Of the 135 plus countries that belong to the World
Boxing Council or play it lip service, Thailand will play a very important
part in this match of the century. Of course the century is barely a year
old. The three judges are Anek Hongtonkan from Thailand, Alfried Bukwana
of South Africa and Bob Logist from Belgium. Logist was the referee when
Patrick the Belgium fought on the charity show last December at the
Marriott in Pattaya. The referee will be Eddie Cotton of New Jersey who
one of America’s top trainers’s described as “too slow. Thinking and
acting”. Cotton was the guy in blue shirt and tie when Andy “The Foul
Pole” Golota banged on Riddick Bowe’s “privates” causing fun
loving Andy to get DQ’d and lose a chance at a world title (1996). Two
Thai’s have been appointed to important positions by the WBC, the lead
sanctioning organization.
The WBC Representative will be General Kovid
Bhakdibhumi of Thailand. He will be assisted by Rex Walker of Denver, Co.,
Arlen Bynum, of Dallas, Tex., and Edward Thangarajah of Bangkok, Thai.
“General Bhakdibhumi is an impeccable man of prestige and respect in his
home country. He holds a high position in the government and will come to
Memphis with great enthusiasm. He has stated to the WBC that this
appointment is a great honor for him.” And the “Cow jumped over the
moon”.
The most important fight in year is being run by a Thai
General? If that’s not scary enough he’s assisted by Edward
Thangarajah a second rate propagandist with the Bangkok Post. Is there any
doubt that “Key and Tea Money flowed”? With almost no respect for the
officials, with the exception of Hongtonkan and Walker, the appointment of
these officials could well turn out to be a disaster of major proportions.
In general those appointed’s single major accomplishment is placing
their “soup coolers on Dr. Jose’ Sulaiman’s backside.” But then
that’s boxing.
Everything else aside, what Tyson and Lewis do in the
ring will make the difference. Can or will Lennox Lewis use his height and
size to push forward while keeping Tyson off balance? Will Lewis even move
forward? Throughout his career Lewis has a style that calls for him to
move backward, toss a jab and wait for a left. He used this tactic against
David Tua and drove him goofy. The “goofy” part was probably inside
the leathers and a gimme. Tua froze which Tyson will not. Iron Mike on the
other hand must move forward in a controlled fashion while hammering away
at Lewis’ ribs which have to be a great target for the shorter Tyson.
Iron Mike’s last against the “Danish Pastry” (aka Brian Nielsen) in
October of last year was a great example of using the body to kill the
head.
In comparing their records there isn’t a lot to
choose from. Tyson KO’d Frank Bruno twice. Once in 3 and then in 7.
Anyone that saw the second Bruno fight knows that Bruno was scared
“shiftless” of Tyson. That despite the fact that Bruno landed a couple
of good punches that stunned Tyson. Lewis took care of Bruno in 7. Lewis
dispatched Fran Botha in 2 while it took Tyson 3. Lennox Lewis took out
Andy “The Foul Pole” Golota in 1 while Tyson mucked about for 3 before
the fight was called “No contest”. There may be a clue though in
looking at the two fights each had with Evander Holyfield. Lewis got a
draw in New York the first time out. The Champ got a UD in the second
meeting in Las Vegas. Many thought Holyfield won the second after clearly
losing the battle in New York. Tyson lost twice to Evander. Once on an
11th round TKO. The second time on the DQ which has become known as the
“Buffet de Ear”.
There is a clue as to who will win by looking at the
first Holyfield fight with Tyson. The second is inconsequential as
Holyfield had already “had sex with Tyson’s mind” by the time they
stepped in the ring. In an interview Holyfield said, “If Lewis doesn’t
move forward Tyson can win.” Evander didn’t tell the entire truth. In
his first fight with Tyson, Holyfield “out dirtied” Tyson. He did it
coming forward. Tyson and most all fighters have a little dirty in them.
They use elbows, knees and gloves anyway they can to distract the opponent
from the task at hand. Holyfield met Tyson head on while refusing to be
intimidated. When Tyson hit after a clinch so did Holyfield. When Tyson
tried a head butt, Holyfield returned the favor. When Tyson tried the old
“face wash” with his glove lace’s Holyfield returned the favor. It
was tit for tat.
In the 5th or 6th round Mike Tyson landed a punch on
the point of Holyfield’s jaw - a punch that would have decked all the
horses and the entire population of Johnson City from the movie Blazing
Saddles. Holyfield never flinched. Instead he countered with two lefts to
the body, a right to the head and a left to the jaw. Tyson was stopped
dead in his tracks. If one could read Tyson’s mind, which is impossible,
he was probably thinking, “Whoops I’m in deep trouble” or words to
that effect. From that moment on Tyson was a beaten man. Evander Holyfield
had stood up to the bully. He saved “Little Eva” from the on coming
train. The bully, Tyson, had to resort to plan “B” for a win. The
problem? With Mike Tyson there never is a plan “B”. Holyfield not only
had played with Tyson’s mind but he had out “hearted” him. The mind
deal being a stroll in the park - the other almost Mission Impossible.
There are a lot of things about Tyson that can be questioned but his heart
isn’t one of those.
The question then before the class is, “Can Lennox
Lewis out heart Mike Tyson?” There are those that question not only
Lennox Lewis heart but his dedication to boxing. They point to Lewis’s
one punch knockouts at the hands of Oliver “The Lights Are On But No
One’s Home” McCall (1994) and Hashim Racham (2001). Lewis reversed the
results in re matches. When the question of heart is raised fans point to
Lewis’s match with Ray Mercer in 1996. “Experts” think that Lewis
escaped with a Majority Decision. The Mercer fight may have been Lewis’s
finest hour as he showed both heart and courage. Can Lewis display the
same against a Mike Tyson who hasn’t fought a real fight since the
second Holyfield fight in June of 1996? Can Lewis muster the interest,
courage, desire and heart to beat a Mike Tyson who knows that a loss and
he’s probably a candidate for the graveyard? Both Lewis and Tyson agree
that Lennox Lewis is not afraid of Mike Tyson. Big mistake. A loss on
Sunday makes Tyson a dead man walking. He’ll be alive and kicking by
Happy Hour Sunday afternoon at the TQ. He’s still got “fish to fry”.
Tyson by a KO in the early rounds. Make it Tyson in 5.
WBC bantamweight champion Veerapol Sahaprom (37-1-1)
was named the best Thai professional athlete of 2001 during a Sports Day
function organized by the Sportswriters’ Association of Thailand. His
trophy presentation was presided over by Princess Ubolratana. The event
was held at the Brew Pavilion in Bangkok. Others honored by the
Sportswriters were Thongchai Jaidee (the top of Asian PGA 2001 order of
merit) and Paradorn Srichapan (currently ranked ATP#67). I didn’t get a
vote.
How you like them apples?
Sam Snead
By Mike Franklin
Having
recently written about ‘all time great’ Sam Snead and his advice to
aging golfers to stay flexible, himself the best example ever, it was sad
to hear of his death at the age of 89. Diana Group PGA Professional,
Richard Livingston made a fitting comment a few days after the
announcement:
“Sam Snead died on the eve of his ninetieth birthday,
probably because God would not allow him to have a ‘ninety’ on the
card.” Nice one Richard!
‘Slammin Sam’, a golfing legend and winner of seven
major championships and eighty-one PGA Tour events, will be missed but
never forgotten.
Herb wins bragging
rights with 38 points
Three Sisters Golf
On the 28th of May, the Three Sisters golfers gathered
at Siam for their weekly session. The weather was beautiful with scattered
clouds but no rain. The sun even shined through for a while. Evidently the
sun was shining on Herb I. as he took the bragging rights with 38 points.
Hot on his heels was Jerry Lien also with 38 points but losing on count
back. Jerry came close to winning but stumbled on a couple of crucial
holes.
Jerry
Lien (left) lost on a count back with Herby (center). Both had 38 points.
Jim “Huh” Tully (right) came in last with 27.
Holding the bag this week was none other than good
“ole” Tully. Jim Tully did it again as he came in with 27 points to
edge out Paul Kraft for the bottom spot. Tully tried but could not crawl
out of the cellar. With 27 points, Tully felt sure that he had vacated the
bottom and discarded the bag, but as fate would have it, he had to keep
the bag again.
