Thai bowlers lead the nation to gold

Pattaya hosts the 7th World Youth Ten Pin Bowling Championships

The opening of the 7th World Youth Ten Pin Bowling Championships at the P.S. Bowl, Pattaya was honored by the presence of HRH Princess Ubolratana accompanied by her three loving children, on August 4th. Pol. Gen. Pornsak Durongkhavibul, president of Thai Bowling Association, Chadej Insawang, Chonburi governor, and Pairat Suthithamrongsawat, Pattaya City mayor did the honors at the opening ceremony.

There were 191 participants from 29 nations competing for 10 gold medals. Categories were divided into single, double, team and master categories.

The Thai team sent in 8 bowlers, two of whom having experience from the 14th Asian Games. The Thais were really on a roll and showed their mettle, as 2 out of 8 made it to the championship finals.

Ankana Nedvijit, 12, won the girls’ singles category and was beside herself with delight. She said she felt she was bowling well, but the high score of 244 was a surprise even to her.

Yanapol Lapapornrat won the boys’ singles and all-event categories.

Ankana is studying in Grade 7 at Rachavinit Bangkaew, Bangkok. Although Ankana developed an interest in bowling only a year ago she was listed in the 14th Asian Games national team. Her second trial here in Pattaya won her the gold medal.

The gold medal of masters category went to Wu Siu Hong from Hong Kong, the silver medal went to Kowoon Kim from Korea and the bronze medal went to Martin Larsen from Sweden.

Special prizes were given to Shonnon Pluhowsky from the U.S.A. and Wu Siu Hong from Hong Kong in honor of achieving Girls Step Ladder Champion and Boys Step Ladder Champion respectively.

The Thai team also received a trophy for coming first in the overall score, followed by teams from England and Sweden.

Pol. Gen. Pornsak presented the prizes to all the winners at the dinner party in Pattaya Park Hotel, Jomtien.

Wind 1, windsurfers 1 last weekend on Jomtien Beach

2nd weekend of DTAC Windsurfing Championships

by Daisy Vogt

There’s an old saying, “You win some, you lose some and some get rained out.” Last weekend that could have been slightly changed and applied to the windsurfers at Jomtien Beach - “You win some, you lose some, and sometimes there’s no wind,” as the first day of racing the wind didn’t cooperate and the windsurfers were beached.

Winners of the second race weekend of the DTAC Windsurfing Championships sailed off Jomtien Beach display their trophies at the awards presentation night at Nang Nual Restaurant in Jomtien after the event.

Nevertheless, August 10th and 11th were two bright days in the eyes of all windsurfers from the Eastern Seaboard because it was the second race weekend of the DTAC Windsurfing Championships.

In total there are four championships; surfers get points according to their placement in each event. The fourth championship will be the Final, and a huge party and amazing prizes will be distributed to the winners of each class. DTAC organized this so that the competitors have a constant goal when training for competition, and to increase the competitive spirit among the young surfers.

In total the competitors are divided in 8 classes depending on equipment use and age. For “Mistral”, also called “One Design” (the official board used in the Olympics), there are 5 classes divided by age - beginner, under 13, under 17, under 20, and over 20. However, the over 20 class generally consists of the Thai National Team, who uses the races as a practice for their ‘real’ competitions.

Then there is the “Formula” or “Funboard” class, whose boards and sails are bigger than the “One Design” and who need stronger wind to windsurf. The surfers of these 3 classes are divided by ability: Professionals, Amateurs/Beginners and Women.

During this weekend of competition a total of 44 windsurfers joined in the races and it was a beautiful view off Jomtien Beach on Sunday when everybody was on the water, surfing the courses and enjoying the wind. Saturday had been a quiet day, since most of the day was spent sitting on the beach, listening to the bands DTAC had sponsored to perform, and waiting for wind, which just did not appear all day long. Only one special race took place after the opening ceremony, where everybody was put on the water at the same time and raced around a boat and back to the beach. The first placers of this race received instant 1000 baht prize money and were very happy for their first piece of luck in the races.

Sunday early evening saw a dinner at Nang Nual Restaurant in Jomtien where officials handed out trophies to the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd placers in each class. Officials included the head of the Windsurfing Association Pattaya, Vitthaya Khunpluem, and Mayor Pairat Suthithamrongsawat. DTAC sponsored a beautiful dinner where athletes, officials and the national team sat together and enjoyed the fun and the friendship of each other.

The next DTAC Windsurfing Championships will take place in October and all athletes will be training hard before then to assure that they keep their current standing in the race before the big final in November or December.

Fifth Tibhar table tennis tournament stunning success

One hundred eighty five avid table tennis players battled it out for supremacy in the 5th Tibhar Table tennis tournament last weekend on the 5th Floor of Mike Shopping Mall. A large number of players from Bangkok took advantage of the long weekend to play in the monthly tournament and made it huge success.

Winners display their trophies after the 5th Tibhar Table tennis tournament last weekend on the 5th Floor of Mike Shopping Mall.

The men’s competition singles competition drew particular interest from spectators as Thailand’s number 8 ranked player Roungsak of Mike-Tibhar defeated the country’s number 6 player from Bangkok, Sarang in the finals.

Thomas Kunzlemann, tournament organizer said, “The organization has become more streamlined and things are running a lot smoother. This latest competition is good preparation for the major tournament due to be held in December in which players from around Thailand and the world will compete for cash prizes. This can only be possible through sponsorship, which is currently being sought.”

The next tournament is scheduled for September 7 and 8. For more details and information on the next competition or training classes contact training coach Thomas at telephone 038 775 312 or email: tkjaava@hotmail .com

After 1 year in new office,PSC partnership with charity stronger than ever

On the 18th of August 2001, the Pattaya Sports Club officially moved into its new Administration Building off Third Road. Positive response to this move has been overwhelming, as memberships have grown at a much improved rate in the past year. The PSC attributes this growth to the more efficient member services, easy parking, and convenient location. Additionally, new applicants no longer have to wait 24 hours to get their PSC Membership Card as all cards are now issued within minutes. The success of Pattaya Sports Club’s new home has exceeded all expectations, and on the 18th of August 2002, the Pattaya Sports Club Administration Building will be celebrating its one year anniversary, or its first birthday, if you will. The executive committee of the PSC would like to take this opportunity to thank all PSC members and the community for their continued support and dedication.

The 2002 - 2003 Pattaya Sports Club Executive Committee had their second meeting this past Tuesday, 6th of August. Bernie Tuppin, Charity chairman, presented several projects for approval. The executive committee voted unanimously on the following:

1. 25,000 baht to purchase bed linens for the Camillian AIDS Centre. The Camillian AIDS Centre is an organization run by Father Giovanni Contarin. They care exclusively for HIV infected patients of varying ages. They offer free counselling for outpatients and free inpatient care, accommodating more than 60 patients. They have approximately 10 volunteer workers who care for the patients, but they, themselves are infected with HIV.

2. 10,000 baht to purchase Pedonk equipment for the Huey Pong Boys Home in Rayong. The Huey Pong Boys Home is run by the Ministry of Social Welfare. It houses, clothes, and feeds orphans, abandoned children, and vagrant children from dysfunctional families, ranging from 5 - 17 years of age. The home supplies the life skills and education needed to return these children to the community.

3. 150,000 baht for a traction machine for the Ban Chang Community Hospital. The Pattaya Sports Club has had a long-standing relationship with the Ban Chang Hospital. Every month, Bjarne Nielsen, PSC registrar, delivers powdered milk for the AIDS babies there, and he also delivers large amounts of rice, eggs, cooking oil, and many other necessities. Over a year ago, the traction machine at the hospital stopped working and hospital administrators say that they are in desperate need of replacing it as it eases the pain of many elderly patients, patients who are undergoing physical therapy, and patients who suffer from arthritis and other painful ailments. The equipment was ordered immediately, and will be delivered to the hospital in approximately 45 days.

4. 56,200 baht for chicken and chicken feed for the Banglamung Boys Home. Follow up from last month: The Banglamung Boys Home is also run by the Ministry of Social Welfare and is identical in practice to the Huey Pong Boys Home in Rayong. It currently cares for the needs of 160 children. The Banglamung Boys Home required funding for the purchase and maintenance of 100 laying chickens. Last month, the executive committee approved a 2 year commitment to this project, totalling 56,200 baht. After approval, Bernie Tuppin, charity chairman, went with them to purchase 100 young chicks, ensured that they were vaccinated, and purchased growth feed for the first two months. Bernie will be personally overseeing the purchase of chicken feed every two months for the next two years. It is expected that the sale of eggs from these 100 chickens will eventually support the purchase of the feed required, as well as pay the boys who look after the birds a small salary of 100 baht per month. This programme is considered ideal for the Pattaya Sports Club as it allows for direct purchase of materials; it gives the children a sense of well being, as well as teaching them self-sufficiency.

If you should know of a charitable organization or a worthy cause that requires financial assistance or support of any kind, please contact the Pattaya Sports Club at (038) 361-167 or email: psca@lox info.co.th

A change in standard procedure should also be noted. Starting on the September PSC Member’s Tournament, the PSC golf committee will no longer be collecting a 200 baht refundable deposit, as this causes many unnecessary complications. Members will, however, be required to pay a 100 baht entry fee which will go towards tournament administration, i.e. golf cart for a course marshal. For more information, please contact Herbie Ishinaga, PSC golf chairman.

Dumas dominate in Shenanigans August Combined Pairs

by Mike Franklin

Rich and Jampa Dumas combined individual high Stableford scores to finish way in front in the Shenanigans August Combined Pairs competition at Plutaluang’s S & E courses. Jampa’s outstanding 49 points was boosted by Rich’s more modest 39 to produce a total of 88 points and the winners’ spot on the podium. Runners-up were Bill Hurd and Phil Groves with a combined 73 points.

Rich & Jampa Dumas (center) scored a combined 88 Stableford points to win this month’s Shenanigans Combined Pairs golf outing at Plutaluang. Mike Franklin (right) and Beautiful (left) offer their congratulations.

The South and East courses always provide a challenge and increasing familiarity with the layout provides the knowledge necessary for good course management and good scores.

Near pins were claimed by Phil Groves, Amphiw Rimngam, Usa Chaiyusit, and Jason Payne who also sank the longest first putt on South nine. Im Woodruffe claimed her usual technical prize by having the long putt on East nine.

The course was presented to its usual high standard and the navy managed the weather with some early light rain followed by an overcast and pleasantly breezy day.

Plenty of shenanigans back at Shenanigans for pasta night with speculation as to which mystery pairs will be drawn at the next visit to Plutaluang South and East on Tuesday August 20th.

Results:

Winners: Rich & Jampa Dumas, 88 Stableford points

Runners-up: Bill Hurd & Phil Groves, 73 points

Near pins: S. 4 Phil Groves, S. 7 Jason Payne, E. 2 Amphiw Rimngam and E. 5 Usa Chaiyusit

Long putts: S. 9 Jason Payne and E. 9 Im Woodruffe

Not lonely at the top

Pattaya Sports Club Friday Bowling League

After week 14 of the Pattaya Sports Club Friday Bowling League it is not lonely at the top. Due to Winchester Club’s self-destruction the past three weeks there are five teams which could tie or pass them next week.

Over 200 bowlers this week were: Samrak 201, Ken 202, Jon 203, and Mio

Mio is back and the Golden Coin is moving up, as expected, and are now in second place with a 3-1 win over Nice & and Sleazy. VFW Post 9876 beat Winchester Club 3-1 and took over sole possession of third place.

Shakey Pete’s and Cafe Ole split 2-2 and are tied for fourth place. Cafe Kronborg beat Three Sisters 3-1.

Mio stretches out their lead

Cafe Kronborg Monday Bowling League

Mio’s team remains on top of the Cafe Kronborg Monday Bowling League through 15 weeks of fun, and actually stretched their lead by defeating La’s team 3-1. Mio, who’s finally back after touring the globe, returned in form and helped her team’s cause with a 515 series. Otto also almost broke the 500-barrier, knocking down a total of 495 pins this week.

Tue (left) rolled a 225 this week and Suraphan (right) had a good first week, rolling a 202.

Second place Tue’s team kept pace, earning a hard fought 3-1 win over Jeed’s team. Tue led the way, rolling a 225 string and 563 series, the best of the week. Jeed’s team, meanwhile, once challengers for the top spot, have now lost 3 straight series.

Bill’s team leapfrogged over Kran’s team into third place with a 4-0 win. Both teams were bowling without two of their regulars - Kran’s team without Lada and Bill’s team without Bill, as both are on holiday. However, Nual and Udom represented Bill’s team well, and Udom’s 530 proved to be too much for Kran’s team.

New member to the league Suraphan had a good first week, bowling a 202 string.

The league enjoyed some good scores this week and managed a good showing of 17 bowlers during the summer holiday period.

Peter Dare wins two on the trot

P.S.C. Golf From The Cafe Kronborg

Monday 5 - Plutaluang Royal Thai Naval Golf Course (Stableford)

The Plutaluang Royal Naval Course’s South and East layouts were host to a Stableford competition in two flights: A flight 0 to 18 and B flight 19 and above. The course yielded some good scores and as usual was in good condition. The course services are amongst the cheapest and best in the area.

The A flight had a three way count back with the first three all on 34 points. Winner was Aussie Pete Dare, his mate Mick Knight was second and Ebrahim was third.

Once again the B flight was won by ‘Slammin’ John Swanson, this time with 40 points. Second on 37 points was ‘Gentleman’ Barry Kerr with Logger Jerry Winn third on 36 points.

Thursday August 8 - Natural Park Resort (Stableford)

As I sat outside the Kronborg in my car on Thursday morning with the rain drumming on the roof of the car and not wanting to run across the road and get soaked to the skin, I saw my treat for the week going out of the window. However, we golfers are a tough lot and with the road slowly beginning to flood I dashed across the road to be met with many others of seemingly similar mental instability such as I.

Peter Dare - winner A flight Monday and Thursday

Not withstanding the dreadful conditions it was unanimously decided to brave the floods and indeed with the Admiral with us what did we have to fear with a local flood? Needless to say we made the trip down to Natural Park Resort with some trepidation, but as the golfing Gods would have it as we travelled down Sukhumvit it gradually dried up and when we reached the course lo and behold we could even use carts. Lucky us.

Natural Park was as usual in fine condition, and we all set forth in good humour to set some good scores, but as the golfing Gods give so they take, so for some strange reason practically the whole field played some really mediocre golf. Maybe they were so relieved to be playing they forgot to score. It was with complete disbelief that some of the ‘winners’ were told they were in the shake up.

It’s an old adage that quality will out, so it was nice to see that first and second in the A flight 0 to 18 were the two lowest handicappers with Peter (Dan) Dare a 3 handicapper winning with 35 points, his friend Mick Knight, a 5 handicapper, second on 32 points and our own Ian Edwards third, and rightfully amazed, on 30 points but beating David Evans on count back. Second time in the week that Peter beat Mick into second place, pity Mick’s name isn’t Dan as ‘Dan Dare beats Desperate Dan twice’ would have been a great headline.

In the B flight, 19 upwards, our star of the day shone out, with Eddie Rudkin being the only golfer of the day to break net par when he shot 37 points to win. Second on 33 points was the shy and retiring ‘Gentleman’ Barry Kerr who shot 33 points, and third was Alan Pearce with 32 points.

The low scores of the second and third in each flight reminded us all that you only have to win the test on the day, and that one shot that you threw away may have lost a place.

Near pins: B4 Wayne Koch, B6 Dave Richardson, C4 Derek Brook and C7 Peter Dare.

George Meigh leads the way

IPGC Pattaya Golf Society at the Bunker

Treasure Hill Golf course may only be six years old but it has already established its reputation as one of the most difficult courses in the region to master. It played generous host once again to the Bunker Boys on Tuesday, 6th August, when the large group met there to challenge for the Bunker’s weekly stroke play competition. The field was divided into two groups with the cut being at eighteen and under.

In division one the Bunker’s most in-form player, Alexander Allan, once again dominated with his net 75, a country mile ahead of Harry Riley, on net 81 and the returning Dale Shier who fired net 83.

Division two saw the best scores of the day with steady George Meigh setting the pace with his net 72, which was just good enough to keep the chasing Duncan Lee (73) and Bryn Jones (77) at bay.

There were no two’s and so the Super Sawng award was kept aside until the next round.

As always, at Treasure Hill, there were a number of candidates for the Bunker Banana Booby but never tell Mr Loy beforehand how you intend to play the course! David Johnson made this mistake and his gross 113 served as a timely reminder to the others to exercise discretion. It pays to be discrete at Treasure Hill.

Rookie McNichol tops at Green Valley

Green Valley is one of the most well presented courses in the area and one which is always very popular with the Bunker Boys. Once again they turned out in force on Friday, 9th August to pit their wits against Peter Thompson’s tough creation.

There were two divisions as usual, with the cut at nineteen and under and in division one the Icelandic Samurai, Kerry Jonsson played some disciplined golf for sixteen holes to win with 35 Stableford points. This was just one ahead of Chia-Lung “Charlie” Chen, with smiling Harry Riley shooting 33 points to take third place.

In division two Bunker rookie, Brian McNichol fired the day’s only par round to secure the win with 36 points, a long way ahead of runners-up Len Jones and Bill Cook, somewhat at sea with their 28’s.

For the second round in succession there were no two’s but another award - the Bunker Banana Booby - was certainly presented. Mr. Loy, on the morning after his birthday celebration, chose to stay in bed and he was an early candidate but when Neil Cameron left a three-foot putt, for a birdie two, half the distance away there could only be one winner!

Results of the two man better ball team event at Banprakong Riverside Course on Thursday, 8th August, saw Alan Cole and Saranya Chaiyanont withstand the challenges from Mr. Loy and Len Jones and Andy Spence and Brian McNichol to win the very enjoyable competition on this immaculately presented course. Thursday is always “fun day” at the Bunker.

The wind blows up the TAGGS skirts

IPGC TAGS golf from The Haven

Monday August 5 Green Valley (Stableford)

1st: Peter Hall, 36 cb 18
2nd: Jimmy Little, 36 cb 16
3rd: Phil Groves, 35
4th: Richard Lyne, 34
5th: Brian Kelly, 33 cb 19
6th: Graham Davis, 33 cb 16

The large field found the strong winds made for a very difficult day’s golf and not surprisingly nobody managed to break their handicap. Peter played very solidly with 18 points on both 9’s to take the honours on his last competition before returning to Japan.

Jimmy and Phil, playing in the same 4 ball ran him very close but both faltered over the back 9. Both Richard and Graham played steady whilst Brian finished strong after a poor start, brought on by the trials of organisation. Ray Matti & Mike Davies shared the 2’s.

Prior to the prize giving, Richard welcomed back Mike & Ning Morris, whilst saying farewell to Peter Hall and the big hitting Dan Boserio.

Wednesday August 7 Burapha West Course (Bogey)

1st: Phil Groves, 2 up cb 2up
2nd: Mike Morris, 2 up cb 2down
3rd: Mo Bertrand, 1 up
4th: Jimmy Little, 2 down

Another large field from the Haven and they found the strong winds and deep rough encountered off the blue tees just too much for most of them. At the end of a difficult day it turned out to be a battle of the 9 handicappers, Phil & Mike, with Phil finishing the stronger. Mike should have been coasting to a win when 6 up with 4 holes to play, but tiredness set in and the course beat him on all of the last 4 holes. The 17th & 18th proving to be a complete nightmare for everyone. Mo Bertrand, playing steadily all day, was the only other player to beat “par” and Jimmy rounded out the podium places with what turned out to be a very creditable 2 down.

Not surprisingly, in the windy conditions the 2’s pool was not won.

Prior to the prize giving, Richard welcomed new members Bob Ziirsen from Denmark, Klaus Lukarsch & Christian Blatt from Beijing. He was also delighted to welcome back Bill Hurd from Eastern Star.

Friday August 9 Phoenix (Monthly Medal)

Ladies
1st: Srinuan Feaungoi, 67
2nd: Oradee Kaesavane, 69

Gentlemen 2nd Division
1st: Glyn Nicholas, 73
2nd: Serge Straeten, 76 cb9 35

3rd: Mo Bertrand, 76 cb9 38.5

Gentlemen 1st Division
1st: Graham Davis, 70
2nd: Phil Groves, 73
3rd: Stephen Beard, 76 cb9 39.5
4th: Klaus Schackt, 76 cb9 40
5th: Arthur Hancock, 76 cb9 40.5

Whilst the Ladies played off the red tees on the Mountain and Ocean courses, the Gentlemen’s divisions were a completely different kettle of fish off the blue tees, especially as the wind blew in heavy gusts all through the round.

Oradee, at last returning to the kind of form that saw her handicap plummet, had to take second best to Srinuan, who carded an excellent 5 under and secured her first Medal and ensured her appearance in the Gold and Silvers to be held at the end of the year.

In the gentlemen’s second division, Glynn led by three clear shots and never looked like being overtaken by either Serge or Mo, although Serge made a gallant attempt by shooting six better on the back nine, but had left himself too much to do over the closing holes.

At last Graham managed to get to the top of the pile in the 1st division, having been placed second or on the podium in 4 out of the last five competitions. He scored a very creditable gross 76 in spite of the conditions, which he said were “nothing new to a Scotsman and sorted the men from the boys and girls”. No doubt a vital necessity in a country where both sexes wear skirts.

Phil, taking his third placing of the week and the “Doc”, who struggled to get back to reality after his purdah in the UK where transexulism is now legal but thank god not compulsory, trailed him home.

Once again the wind proved too difficult on the par threes and the day did not produce a single two therefore leaving a double carry over for the next outing at Century Ban Chan.

Back at The Haven, Richard welcomed back the “Doc” to a chorus of bring back “The Bogey Man”, who did a fantastic job in his absence, and a farewell to Glynn Nicholas who returns to England to do his stint on the treadmill.

IPGC members can now check their updated handicaps on line at www.ipgolf club.com every Sunday.

Earle the Pearl Kershaw surges to the front

PSC Three Sister’s Golf

With a good turn out on Monday and the weather cooperating again, Earle the Pearl Kershaw surged to the front of the pack. Earle, playing beside his partner Kevin Mitch, showed the rest of the field that he too can make it to the top, shooting 41 points in the process.

Earl Kershaw won the bragging rites at SCC Monday Aug 5. Rollie came in holding the bag again until Bob Davis came in late and took it away from him!

Following close on Earle’s heels was former winner Gordon McKnight. Gordon tried to pass Earle but could not quite pull it off as he stopped one short at 40 points.

Just behind Gordon was his playing companion Chris John with 39 points, followed by Gerry Carpenter with 38. Competition was hot and heavy but the Pearl rose to the top.

Bob Davis managed to snatch the bag away from Rollie - better late than never.

Vying for the bag holder of the week was none other than Rollie Weese. Rollie had 27 points and had his picture taken along with Earle when along came the last group. A little late, but they came in with valid scores of 26 legitimate points to snatch the bag away from Rollie. With a sigh of relief, Rollie passed the bag over to Bob Davis who had won on count back from Gez Tracy. Both golfers came in with 26 big points but Bob managed to hold on to the bag in a hard fought battle for the last position.
