TAT penetrates Japanese school market
Thailand, for the first time, has signed a Memorandum of
Understanding (MOU) with Japanese tour companies to receive Japanese
students as special guests on their educational trip to Thailand from the
year-end of 2002.
Japanese student groups will become one of the major
targets of TAT with the number of 160,000 students traveling overseas each
year due to Japanese government’s policy that encourages secondary school
students to take a trip outside the country.
Japan Tourist Bureau Corporation (JTB) and Kinki Nippon
Tourist (KNT) are the tour agencies providing the services to Japanese
schools.
Juthamas Siriwan, TAT governor said that JTB and KNT
consider Thailand as a potential tourist destination because of its
popularity among Japanese people and its readiness to cater for the large
groups of Japanese pupils.
In accordance with the MOU, TAT will cooperate with the
two travel companies to arrange activities to give information about
Thailand to the targeted groups such as teacher and parent associations.
Moreover, TAT will facilitate Japanese schools in handling immigration and
customs procedures for their students.
Juthaporn Rerngron-asa, TAT marketing promotion
department director, said that in 2001, only around 10,000 Japanese students
visited Thailand. The figure is considered diminutive compared to
80,000-100,000 Japanese students visiting China and Korea each year.
The MOU will lead to the collaboration between TAT and
Japan travel companies to organize overseas tours for Japanese high school
students. Four hundred students from Mutsubara School will be the first
group going on excursion to Thailand in December 2002 after the signing of
the MOU. Ayutthaya, Pattaya, and Nakhon Ratchasima will be the destinations
for the first launched project. (TNA)
