Princess Ubolratana opens the Pasaya Textile Gallery
story and photos by Peter Cummins
HRH Princess Ubolratana recently presided over the
opening of "Pasaya The Textile Gallery", located on the third
floor of the equally-new Gaysorn Plaza, before a huge crowd assembled for
the event.
HRH
Princess Ubolratana receives a tribute from "Pasaya" owner Schle
Wood-Thanan.
The new facility is the dream of Schle Wood-Thanan and
the splendidly-appointed, furnished and beautifully laid out showrooms
display a wide variety of exquisite Thai silks and textiles. The Textile
Gallery complements Khun Schle’s Satin Textiles located at Klongsarn and
the up-country manufacturing facility at Ratchburi.
Schle
Wood-Thanan and wife Ratiya Chantien pose at the gallery opening.
The Princess took a lively interest in the splendid
exhibit, examining the wares minutely, moving with considerable agility
among the displays, while the large number of press and camera crews tried
desperately to keep up with her.
The manufacture, display and marketing of textiles is
second nature to Khun Schle who is equally at home managing his colourful
and serene products, as he is at the other end of the spectrum: driving a
yacht through the vagaries of nature: the winds, waters and tides which all
require superb management, otherwise known as seamanship.
Some of
the "Pasaya" principals - at the gallery, and later aboard the new
yacht.
In fact, Schle and others among his crew, who include
some of Thailand’s - and the region’s - best sailors, were out in full
force at the opening of "Pasaya". But the legend does not stop on
the third floor of Gaysorn Plaza. Down at the Royal Thai Navy base in
Sattahip is a state-of-the-art 40-ft yacht just waiting to take on the world’s
best at the Sixteenth Phuket King’s Cup Regatta, coming up this December.
Built by leading boat-yard DK Composites, operating out of Malaysia on the
Straits of Malacca and designed by the world’s leading naval architect,
Bruce Farr, the new craft is not only a beauty but, others out of the same
stable are champions. The DK Composite Farr-40s are the "Formula
One" of the sea-lanes.
Inside
the "Pasaya" Gallery.
Having raced most successfully, sailing Viroj Nualkair’s
Farr MX-41 "Octopussy", finishing first and second in the Cruising
Class in the last two Phuket Regattas, Schle is totally honed up to drive
his new craft to the finishing line - at the front of the fleet.
Schle
driving "Octopussy" hard at the 2001 King’s Cup Regatta: this
year, the "Pasaya".
And, of course, the floating "Pasaya" is, indeed, a water-borne
version of the Gaysorn facility, with the livery and decor right out of The
Textile Gallery".
Saranya best of the day in Diana Seniors & Ladies September Open
by Mike Franklin
In overcast, windy and humid conditions at Pattaya
Country Club, Saranya Chaiyanon returned 40 Stableford points to win the
Ladies Division and produce the best score of the day. Moon was Ladies
runner-up with 36 points. Next best of the day came from Michael O’Meara
in the Seniors Division with 39 points, closely followed by runner-up Graham
Buckingham with 38 points, beating newcomer Pertti Pyrro on count back.
For the Super Seniors Bob Short’s 38 points was enough
to win the division, with Andy Anderson runner-up with 37 points beating
Terry Phur on count back.
Alan Pearce claimed the near pin on #16 and a long putt
on #18. Mike Franklin sank the other long putt on hole #9, the other near
pins going to Gordon McKnight, Don Francis and Paul Greenslade on holes #5,
#7, and #12 respectively.
The next Diana Seniors & Ladies Open is on October
31st at Pattaya Country Club - sign-up for that at the Green Bottle on the
Diana Golf notice board, or at the Diana Driving Range. Make a note in the
diary too of the 2002 Diana Gold Charity Tournament at Plutaluang Navy Golf
Course on Friday November 15th. This will be a single shotgun start and
early sign-ups are advised.
Pleasure Dome become the sole survivors
Mickey Mouse Darts League
Pleasure Dome is the only undefeated team left in the
Mickey Mouse Darts League by virtue of their win over Rising Sun in week 5.
The undefeated Domers also snatched away the beer leg, leaving the Rising
Sun with a sinking feeling.
In other week 5 matches, Devonshire won the match but
lost the beer to the Lobby, Cheers won the match but went home thirsty
against Palmer’s, Mick’s Place swept match and beer from Bunker, and
Bulls Eye won the match but lost the beer to Smugglers Rest. In a makeup
match, Rising Sun won the match but lost the beer to the Bunker.
Devonshire Rocky’s 110 remains the checkout to beat.
This week (Oct 4) sees Pleasure Dome v Mick’s Place,
Lobby Bar v Rising Sun, Cheers v Devonshire, Palmer’s v Bulls Eye, and
Bunker v Smugglers Rest.

Pattaya Country Club
(Stroke)
Pattaya Country Club was host for a stroke play
competition in one flight and for a swimming competition for the second half
of the round as the heavens opened and made the last few holes a real
misery.
Dave
Richardson nearly got the mug, but settled for winning the B flight.
At the start the weather was fine and all were thinking
of a good round and fine scores, but here you never know and many a time its
the luck of the draw as one course sinks into a wet nightmare while down the
road the next course misses the rain. This time it was wet on the back nine
but even so the drenched players stuck it out and produced some good scores.
The winner was Bob Morrison with a fine net 70 in the
circumstances, closely followed by a count back on net 71 which saw Wayne
Koch in second and Norman Robinson third. Fourth with net 72 was Hwang Yong
Hwan. Hot showers were the #1 priority for all, even if the rain was warm.

The Monthly Kronborg Mug
A funny thing happened after the presentation of the ‘Mug’;
now this is against all the history of the event as one of the objects of
winning is the free drink from all the ‘losers’, but the winner rang the
bell. I don’t suppose the constant filling of the mug by the losers had
anything to do with it! What a nice new idea, never I suspect to be
repeated.
Bob
Morrison, winner at Pattaya and winner of A flight at Phoenix.
We are getting ahead of ourselves as earlier, close on
thirty had turned up at Phoenix to contest September’s Mug in rainy
overcast conditions, and at the start of the Lakes Nine it was umbrellas up
or at the ready as memories of Monday at Pattaya were still strong. But lo
and behold as the round progressed the skies cleared and we had some fine
and excellent golf weather and the Ocean Nine was a pleasure to play, lucky
us.
Even so the course was very wet after 24 hours of rain,
and with no buggies for the first nine, it played long, and as most of the
tees were back the course played difficult. Whilst you usually expect low
scores on this ‘user friendly’ course, surely this time we were going to
have higher scores.
Bob
being presented with the Mug by mine host Bjarne.
As the scores came in the early leader in the clubhouse
was the ‘Admiral’ with a net 66. Surely this was going to be his month!
Many other scores started to come in and it became evident that scores in
the 60’s were going to be fairly common, but still the 66 held, with the
saddest story being from Bob Morrison who returned a net 67 with an 8 on the
last, when a simple bogie would have won the competition for him. We’ve
all done it, its like walking in quicksand, the more you struggle the faster
you sink.
The winner of the A flight was Bob Morrison, with a net
67, on count back over Fabian, of ThaiGerLine fame, also net 67 with Robert
Lamond in third place on net 69.
With nearly the last card, in came Bob Benda with a net
65 to destroy the Admiral’s dreams and win the Mug. Come to think on it
not a bad result as Bob rang the Bell, now that is class in a champion. So
the winner of the B flight was Dave Richardson with net 66 and second on net
68 was John James on count back over Huang Yong Hwan, also net 68.
Near pins: L2 John James, L7 Wayne Koch, O5 & O7 Bob Morrison.

1st: B.J. Smith, all square
2nd: Mike Morris, 1 down
3rd: Dave Stockman, 2 down cb9 1 down
4th: Larry Ball, 2 down cb9 3 down, cb6 3 down
5th: Moe Bertrand, 2 down cb9 3 down, cb6 5 down
The week started off with a very wet and windy day out
that proved that the rainy season has really reached Pattaya at last. So
much so, that several groups decided to give "Old Man Par" the
last couple of holes and beat a smart retreat to the clubhouse.
B.J. Smith, showing his usual grit and determination,
stuck with it to the end although the conditions got the better of him,
losing three of the last four holes. But he still finished with a very
creditable all square in the end. Mike Morris was also determined to get a
full round in after his stint at work and took second place with a strong
finish over the closing holes.
Dave Stockman led home the chasing group, who all
suffered in the torrential rain, taking third place on count back.
Once again there were no winners in the twos pool and
therefore made a double carryover to Wednesdays competition.
Back at The Haven Richard Livingston, the resident PGA
professional welcomed new member Graham Bowden from England, whilst
welcoming back Mike Morris and his beautiful wife Ning.

Burapha East
Stroke Play
1st: Larry Ball, 71
2nd: Kerry Jonsson, 72
3rd: Phil Groves, 73
The recent rains made the East Course from the blue tees
very wet but playable. Although the run was non-existent, the greens allowed
the players to shoot at the flag and good iron technique was well rewarded.
Larry Ball made it a happy return to his golfing
activities in the Land of Smiles, just squeezing past Kerry Jonsson to claim
his first victory from The Haven for some considerable time, and promising
to continue in the same vein after an extensive course of lessons with
Richard which already shows signs of paying off for the man from Wyoming.
Phil Groves, after taking a double on both of the first
two holes, managed to get it back into some form of order to claim third
place well ahead of the rest of the field.
The quiet man from Australia, Phil Groves, swept the twos
pool including two carryovers to reinforce his new found belief in his short
game.

Stableford
1st: Richard Lyne, 38 points
2nd: Dave Stockman, 32 cb9 19
3rd: Arthur Hancock, 32 cb9 17
4th: Serge Straeten, 32 cb9 15
Having won twice last week, it was no surprise to see
Richard Lyne again vying for the top honours and on the day he did it in
style beating the rest of the field by a massive six shots on a day that
started with rain and continued until everyone had showered and left for
home. It cannot be long before he will be joining the other single figure
handicappers playing out of The Haven.
Dave Stockman and Arthur Hancock also continued with
their good run of form and took their usual positions on the podium after
count back from Serge Straeten.
The "Doc" took the twos pool on his own having
left it one day too long to make a real killing.
Prior to the prize giving, Richard welcomed back Peter
Christianssen from Denmark, who is struggling with his grip of the game
following a nasty accident that left him with a shortage of digits with
which to grip the club. Not helpful when playing off a single figure
handicap.
The day was also a counting competition for the on-going
Order of Merit and Serge took the first place from the qualifying players
together with 12 points to add to the 12 he scored in the previous outing.
The rest of the scores were: Jeff McLaury 10, Bob Lindborg 8, Russell Finch
7, B.J. Smith 6, Stephen Beard 5, Jimmy Little 4, and Moe Bertrand 3.
The Monster wins again
IPGC Pattaya Golf Society with the Bunker
Tuesday 24th September had another large contingent of
Bunker Boys and Girls travel to the hardest course around this area,
Treasure Hills (The Monster) which once again gobbled all the contestants
and left them wondering just how to beat this course.
Division two had David Johnson and Saranya on net 80,
behind the winner Duncan Lee with net 79.
Division one was not much better with Norman Brooks 78
coming behind Ken Lill and Alex Allan with net 78.
The Bunker Super Sawng award proved too difficult and the
bananas were awarded to Steve Nowell and Ashle, both 13 handicappers who
could not break gross 100. The man-eating monster course triumphed again but
the Bunker Boys will be back.
The First Nowell at Siam
On Friday, 27th September the Bunker Boys and Ladies
braved the inclement seasonal weather and travelled to the local course at
Siam Country Club for their weekly Stableford competition.
The ladies’ event was won by the returning Usa "Noi"
Chaiyosit who drove her way to 34 points, closely followed by Saranya
Chaiyanont on 33.
In division two there was a tie at the top with Jon Wood
and David Johnson recording 36 points and Martin Hanfelt coming third with
32 points.
Division one saw the only sub par round of the day when
Steve Nowell triumphed with 38 points, three clear of Magnus Johansson and a
further one ahead of Norman Brooks and PJ Redmond.
The Bunker Super Sawng award was shared by Magnus
Johansson and Lamud Chaidara who both managed to fire birdie two’s and the
Bunker Banana Booby found its way into the hands of Keith Saunders for his
24 point tally.

1st B Flight - Jim Munns - 41 points
2nd B Flight - Ron Dowell - 36 points

With eleven of the regulars traveling to Kanchanaburi for
a road trip, the balance of the club took the opportunity to jump into the
breach. Chris Fox and John McHugh, playing their last comp before returning
to Guam for four months of work, finished one-two in A Flight. Frank Trinkle,
in like manner found the podium just a couple of days before his return to
Japan. Jimmy Munns "The Word" found his form, albeit temporarily,
shooting the score of the day, 41 points.

1st A Flight - Rick Sharp - 37 points
2nd A Flight - Jim Brackett - 33 points
1st B Flight - Larry Nicholas - 33 points
2nd B Flight - Lee Adelly - 33 points
The tougher the course the more likely "The
Hermit" will come good and the par 74 St. Andrews 2000 adjacent to
Green Valley Rayong proved just such a test. Rick was the only member of the
field to better his handicap. Jim Brackett and Larry "Broken Beak’
Nicholas each fashioned 33 point efforts, garnering 2nd in B Flight and 1st
in A Flight, respectively. Lee Adelly dropped in from the Sugar Shack,
across the street, to steal away with a little second place money.

Medal/Stroke
1st Flight - Steve Donovan - 74 net
2nd Flight - Frank Sinclair - 74 net
3rd Flight - Rick Sharp - 75 net
The field once again dodged the precipitation and had a
fine day on this Nick Faldo design. It had been some time since many had
played to the postage stamp sized greens, but all agreed that it was an
incredible value. Donovan’s inept play on the front side naturally was
coupled with a good back nine, which, if nothing else, gave him the
advantage in a count back which he used to narrowly edge Pa Pa Sinclair.
Kanchanaburi Tour
September 23-26
Joe Mooneyham - 32 points - Champion
Phil Mitchell - 26 points - 1st Runner-up
Klaus Schackt - 24 points - 2nd Runner-up
One good looking golfer (An [Oradee] Kaesavane) and ten
not so good looking golfers played a warm-up round on Jack Nicklaus’
Mission Hills layout in Kanchanaburi on Sunday and then dug in for three
rounds of competition on Nichigo Golf Club. The competition covered the
three permutations of the 27-hole layout in two days of Stableford and a
middle day of stroke play.
Joe "I’m in the" Mooneyham walked away from
the field, as he did in the previous tour to Royal Hills, parlaying a first
and two seconds into a six point victory. Points on tour are awarded in
reverse order of daily finish, with the winner on the day receiving a bonus
point.
Joe wowed ‘em with 43 points, 78 gross, on Day 1. No
slight to Joe but the round of the tour went to newly arrived visitor Phil
Mitchell who shot even par 72, for 43 points off his seven handicap, on Day
3. Paul Phillips found the plot on day 2 as he shot a net 67 in stroke play,
a result that pundits would not have expected from the highest handicapper
in the field (20).
Daily results: Day 1 - Nichigo (River/Mountain): 1st Joe
Mooneyham (43 points), Klaus Schackt (39 points), Eddie Blackwell (38
points). Day 2 (Lakes/Mountain): 1st Paul Phillips (net 67), Joe Mooneyham
(net 72); 3rd Stan Fry (net 74). Day 3 - Nichigo (River/Lakes): 1st Phil
Mitchell (43 points), 2nd Joe Mooneyham (39 points), 3rd Eddie Blackwell (38
points).

Natural Park Hill - White Tees
Stableford
1st A Flight - Eddie Blackwell - 37 points
2nd A Flight - Phil Mitchell - 34 points
3rd A Flight - Jim Brackett - 30 points
1st B Flight - Joe Mooneyham - 39 points
2nd B Flight - Svein Vistung - 33 points
3rd B Flight - Larry Nicholas - 32 points
Tell me if you are tired about hearing about "I’m
in the" Mooneyham. He enjoyed the last day of his 14 handicap by
sliding into B Flight for a victory. Of course, it didn’t matter which
flight he was in as he shot the best of the day 39 points at the difficult,
well conditioned, but rainy, Natural Park Hill layout.
Eddie Blackwell came straight off the Kanchanaburi Tour
with 37 points to best his fellow A Flight competitors. Those of us who
stayed behind wondered in the Kanchanaburi gang played a competition or went
to a golf clinic. A couple of curiosities coming out of the day’s play
were: (1) Colin Stielow, one of three friends of Kevin Ward visiting from
Perth, whiffed/fresh-aired his tee shot on the Par 3 15th hole and then put
his second shot on the green and sunk the putt for a most unlikely par and
(2) only a lipped out putt by Julian Clarke kept his four ball (Jim
Brackett, Rick Sharp and Eddie Blackwell) of all having gross birdies on the
par 4 12th.
A closing farewell to the three lads from Perth: Colin,
above-mentioned, Doug Ewart and Kevin Buchanan, who along with their mates
Kevin Ward and "Tom Thumb" Smith, incurred injuries on an order
unseen by Australians since Gallipoli. Their wounds included numerous
abrasions, bitten thumb, conjunctivitis, the flu, food poisoning, and
sprained wrists. There was no information available on STD’s.
Reminder: Stan Fry’s Birthday Bash is on Wednesday,
October 16th at Green Valley. Its individual Stableford followed by a fine
buffet and the award of numerous prizes at the Classroom A-Go-Go.
9th TQ Masters teeing up at Thai Navy Course

or Kim Fletcher at Shenanigans.
The field this year is limited to 128 players to ensure
an enjoyable day, both on the course and afterwards back at TQ.
Entries are only confirmed with payment, and an early
sell-out is again expected, so sign-up please, without delay.
Sorry Dene, no bragging rights this week
PSC Three Sisters Golf
With storm clouds surrounding Siam and weather
threatening, the golfers from the Three Sisters braved the weather and teed
off as usual. Luck was with the golfers as the threatening weather never
really materialized. The last few groups got a little wet but not as bad as
it could have been.
Doug
Powell claimed the bragging rights with 39 points at Siam Country Club on
Sep 23. Eddy "The Ringer from St. Andrews" came in holding the
bag!
With the weather held in check, Doug Powell went around
the course in his normal manner with a steady drive and good approach shots.
Doug squeaked by with a winning score of 39 points. At first it was thought
that Doug had tied Dene Mundy at 38 points, but after checking the new
handicaps, it was found that he had won by a point. Sorry Dene, no bragging
rights this week.
On the bottom end this week it was a close call for Joe St. Laurent. Joe
missed holding the bag by a point. Stepping past Joe and firmly gripping the
bag for the week was Eddie Rudkin who came in with 25 points. Eddie had an
excuse as he just got back from England and was jet lagged. Eddie should be
ready next week to climb out of the cellar to discard the bag.
Mio’s team continues their winning ways
Cafe Kronborg Monday Bowling League
This week the Cafe Kronborg Monday Bowling League had
some surprise results in close matches. But Mio’s first place team still
beat Kran’s second place team 3-1 in a very even match, to stays on top.
Tue’s team in third place before the day, beat Bill’s
team by 4-0, to move up to second, with very good bowling from Aun, who
rolled a 202 and a 528 total, and Porn who knocked down 558 pins on the day.
From
left: Aun 202, and Suraphan 206.
In the last match, La’s team beat Jeed’s 3-1. Even
Suraphan’s good bowling of a 206 string and 537 series was not enough to
win it for Jeed.
Another good turnout this week, and it was good to welcome Lek back after
a long absence.
The Square ring: World Boxing Council in deep trouble
by Howie Reed
Last week a hurricane named Isidore hit the United
States, rearranging everything in its path. Women are like that. Homes were
destroyed, miles and miles of real estate flooded, #4 Florida State beaten
by Louisville and lives altered. The newspapers were full of the obligatory
pictures of flattened trailer parks, where the elite meet. Seems that
hurricanes and Elvis sightings always attack trailer parks. That’s just
the way it is.
The WBC (World Boxing Council) probably would have
settled for a mere hurricane. What hit them was a ruling by Judge Richard
Owen and a jury in New York. The pair combined to award $31 million USD to
Graciano Roccigiani (41-5-1) a former light heavyweight fighter now playing
the part of a convict in a prison in Germany. How could this happen?
Roy Jones Jr. decided that he had no interest in
defending the WBC Title against #1 challenger Michael "Better
Than" Nunn. Instead Jones was going to take on heavyweight Buster
Douglas. He surrendered the belt in 1997. Roccigiani and Nunn fought on
March 21, 1998. Rocchigiani defeated Nunn for the title. Well kinda. In a
faxed letter dated January 8, 1998, from WBC president Jose Sulaiman to the
promoter of the fight, Sulaiman referred to the bout as for the "Lt.
Heavyweight title". Both fighters signed a "WBC" contract
stating that the fight was for the "WBC Light Heavyweight Title."
For three months Rocchigiani was listed by the WBC as "Light
Heavyweight Champion". Then Jones decided that fighting a heavyweight
might be more work than he was willing to do. "Yo Dr. Jose," he
said. "I want my WBC title back." "No problemo," came
the answer from senior Dr. Jose. Wrong.
The jury trial in New York was not concerned with guilt
or innocence. Judge Owen had already ruled (February 2001) that the WBC
breached the contract it signed in connection with the Rocchigiani-Nunn
match. "The language in the written agreement admits of only one
possible interpretation," wrote Judge Owen, "the Rocchigiani-Nunn
bout was for the WBC Light Heavyweight Championship. The word ‘interim’
is nowhere to be found within the four corners of the document."
This trial was for the amount due the "ex
champion". If the judgment stands the WBC is out of business in
America, Germany and probably England. Out of business there means out of
business period. The WBC receives a sanctioning fee of 3% for title fights
with some caps. For the recent DeLaHoya-Vargas fight in Las Vegas that
amount was over $300,000 USD.
Any reasonable person must ask, "How could a
handshake between a German TV Network and a fighter result in a 31 million
dollar award?" One juror’s view provided some insight, "We
decided to increase the award to Rocchigiani because we have to bang the
drum a little louder because when it comes to honesty, they (the WBC) are
hard of hearing." There is ample evidence to support this position.
The attorney for Rocchigiani said, "It was certainly
justified by the evidence, not only of the arrogance with respect to Mr.
Rocchigiani but also by the WBC’s fabrications." This referred to a
phony letter the WBC submitted just before trial to support its claim that
Rocchigiani won only the interim, not the world title. The document didn’t
pass the smell test as there was no proof that it had even been sent or when
it was prepared. When the WBC took the title from Rocchigiani and returned
it to Jones, it didn’t even admit that it was stripping Rocchigiani. WBC
President Sulaiman testified under oath that his organization’s listing of
Rocchigiani as champion in three sets of ratings was just a
"typographical error." His testimony ranks right up there with
"The dog ate my homework" and "This Is Thailand".
The WBC is a major player on the Asian boxing scene
through the Asian Boxing Council whose president is Pol. General Kovid
Bhakdabhumi assisted by secretary Edward Thangarajah. The latter is listed
on the official WBC web site as from Sir Lanka. While this is probably just
a clerical error, we know that Edward is from Thailand. Both attended last
summer’s Tyson-Lewis fight as "official WBC Observers". To
highlight the importance of the Asian market last year’s WBC Convention
was held in Pattaya Beach. This year’s is scheduled for Tokyo. Three
fighters from Thailand currently reign as WBC World Champions. Sirimongkol
Singmanchi 40-1 (Super Feather), Veeraphol Sahaporn 38-1-1 (Bantam Weight)
and Flyweight Champion Pongsaklek Wonjongkram 45-1.
While none of the actions of the WBC should surprise
anyone in boxing, to the public at large it may be a different story. The
WBC and other organizations, the International Olympic Committee to name
another, operate like any good Banana Republic Dictatorship should. They set
and change rules on a whim. Usually with one strongman calling the shots.
Last year the WBC wanted Pongsaklek Wonjongkram to defend his world title as
the grand final to the WBC Convention in Pattaya. South American Luis
Alberto Lazarte was willing but the problem was that he wasn’t ranked in
the WBC’s top 15. No problem. The next day he was ranked #15. He fought on
December 6, quitting after one full round and disappeared from the rankings
never to be heard from again.
Dr. Jose Sulaiman and the WBC had their days in court. Using the standard
MO, they spun a tale of innocence, mistakes and sinister conspirators allied
against them. In the end the jury said, "No way Jose." How about
them apples?

Fitness Tips: The Dusit Fat-Shattering Diet
G’Day Readers,
Now that I have your attention in fitness tips today I’m
going down the nutrition road, with a couple of stories on some of the
benefits of eating a healthy breakfast and something that will come as a
surprise to a large proportion of you, settlement of the debate between
fresh and frozen vegetables.
A study conducted by researchers at Cardiff University in
the UK found that eating a regular healthy breakfast significantly reduces
the chance of contracting colds or the flu.
The 500 healthy volunteers were required to keep a
ten-week diary of illness, noting any physical symptoms and affects on
memory, attention span and general mood.
Researchers found that those who had developed more than
one illness throughout the study were less likely to have eaten a regular
healthy breakfast. The study also found that the 188 participants who
developed colds were more likely to drink and smoke than those who lead a
healthy lifestyle, including eating a regular breakfast, throughout the
ten-week program. They also found that smokers and participants who had a
lot of stress in their lives developed illnesses much quicker than
non-smokers.
The study also demonstrated a link between eating a
regular healthy breakfast and a reduction in stress levels and stress
related illnesses.
Let’s take this one step further and tie it up with
this week’s headline. Eating a full breakfast will elevate the body’s
metabolic rate, the speed your entire body functions at, which enhances
energy levels and brain function. While a good healthy breakfast will reduce
not only the need for morning caffeine to kick start the day, it will also
assist most people to limit the overall amount of calories that are consumed
throughout the day.
A big breakfast will generally dictate that the evening
meal is greatly reduced in size, allowing the body to rest better and not be
forced to store large amounts of late night consumed calories due to
inactivity (sleeping).
It’s a logical choice; if you want to reduce your
weight, body fat, then have a healthy breakfast. Ground breaking isn’t it?
Like the solution to being overweight, you can’t beat regular exercise and
healthy eating for sustained long term results.
Fresh Vegetables vs Frozen Vegetables
It has been a popular argument since frozen food
companies began packaging vegetables and putting them in supermarket
freezers, but the culmination of years of local and international studies
have concluded that frozen vegetables at the point of consumption provide
all the nutritional benefits of fresh vegetables.
A recent study commissioned by Heinz Wattie’s
Australia, conducted by the New Zealand Institute for Crop and Food
Research, analysed the nutrient composition of green garden peas at the
various stages of processing and storage.
The most significant discovery was the minimal difference
in Vitamin C content between fresh and frozen peas. It was found that
nutrient loss begins from the moment of harvesting and continues until the
vegetable is consumed. In frozen peas the vitamin C content did not differ
from the time they were frozen to up until three months later. What’s more
is that the total loss in vitamin C from harvesting to consumption twelve
months later was only 18%.
Fresh or frozen makes no difference as long as you have
lots of them in your regular healthy eating plan.
That brings up the final tip for the day, something that
I was discussing with the girls in one of my evening aerobics classes. These
girls, some of them at least, had convinced themselves that they had to eat
healthy food 3-4 small meals a day with fruits as snacks in between and
drink only 2-3 liters of water every single day for ever and ever amen.
You should have seen the looks I got when I brought up
this little gem: 1 day a week, you should eat and drink whatever makes your
heart content. It’s the only way to make 6 days of progress and avoid the
inevitable guilt trips after having fallen off a diet. Fact: 98% of people
gain back more weight than they were originally carrying before going on any
diet. That’s any diet. Healthy eating and regular physical activity is the
only combination to take the weight off and keep it off for life.
