The “Over 40s” steal the limelight 7th Tibhar Table Tennis Tournament
The 7th Tibhar Tournament, held on October 12 and 13 drew
competitors from around the country and from various part of the world, but
it was the over 40’s that took the limelight in this month’s
competition.
The
“Over 40s” stole the show at the 7th Tibhar Table Tennis Tournament.
With over 150 entries in the 7th monthly tournament local
players came from as far as Chiangmai in the North and Ranong in the South
to compete in Pattaya as part of the preparation for the ‘big’
tournament to be held in December this year.
The team of Thomas from Mike Tibhar and Pierre from
Switzerland won their match against Somyos and Montri from Ping Pong Pattaya
in the Over 40’s doubles category. Thomas again came up trumps to defeat
fellow team member Gallo in the men’s over 40 match.
However, the men’s open singles and doubles were
dominated by the Navy players who made their journey from Sattahip, while in
the boys over 18s the home players danced around all comers from Chiang Mai
in the doubles and Rayong in the singles.
Next month will be the final round monthly matches held
on Saturday & Sunday November 9 and 10 before the 3-day tournament held
in December with 100,000 baht in prize money on offer for category winners.

Bruce - Jackson partnership back in form
by Mike Franklin
Clive Bruce and George Jackson showed their old form in
the 15th October Shenanigans Pairs Scramble at Plutaluang by carding an
impressive 64.6 net off a combined handicap of 4.4.
Not too far behind were Bob Moberg and Carl Baumann with
a net 66, beating Jimmy Little and Malcolm Clare in third place on count
back.

15 Shenanigans pairs scramble. (Photo by Kim Fletcher)
A field of thirty-seven players enjoyed fine weather and
the South and East courses presented up to the usual high standard.
Newcomers to the fortnightly Shenanigans outing were Phil
Taylor, Carl Baumann, Chuck St. Laurent and Tom Buckley.
Phil Taylor claimed near pins on S.4 and E.2, Jimmy
Little on S.7 and Carl Baumann on E.5. Long putts were sunk on S.9 and E.9
by Michael Howard and Steve Ryser respectively.
It was back to Shenanigans for the prize giving and the
familiar party atmosphere.
Tuesday October 29th is the next outing, playing a
‘Four Clubs’ Pairs Scramble and the opportunity to be more creative than
usual over eighteen holes of navy terrain.
Muffy Kerr edges Joe Mooneyham in Stan’s Birthday Bash
It seemed appropriate that a guy named Muffy should stand
atop the victory stand at an awards ceremony held in the Classroom A-Go-Go.
His career best gross 74, 45 point outburst broke the heart of clubhouse
leader, Joe Mooneyham, who went low with a gross 76, 44 point showing.
Muffy and Joe, who both play competitively four times a
week and have well seasoned handicaps, relegated some fine performances by
some of the city’s best golfers to also ran status.
Coming particularly to mind are Magnus Johansson, who
shot 76, Stefan Andersson, who shot 75, and Ray Matti who shot 79. Muffy,
who had shown signs that he was coming into form, shot his handicap for the
first time on this leave from offshore work the day before the big bash.
Jack Grinvold edged Gary Blackburne on the second level
of count back, the last six holes, to take second place in the top flight.
Low gross went to Nirand Phimwong, the general manager of
Green Valley Rayong and St Andrews 2000 complex. Nirand shot a brilliant 73.
Morton Esseth, who has a well-recognized ability to
perform in the forgiving Stableford system, which was the format on the day,
mastered B flight. His 43 points left second and third place to Bill
Campbell and John Swanson, respectively.
The Ladies Flight with twelve competitors had to go to
count back on the last three holes, as Kaew Somkid edged An Kaesavane for
the top prize. An carried away an armful of prizes as she added the Lady’s
Long Drive to her second place finish. Her drive even outdistanced the
men’s winner, Graham Ball.
The prize winning was supplemented by a team award, which
went to the four ball that had the highest cumulative total of points as
determined by three of its members. The scorekeeper’s task was lightened
as soon as he added the scores of the Joe Mooneyham (44), Nirand Phimwong
(39), Terry Summers (38), Ivan Plunkett quartet. Their 121-point total made
them the unreachable victor.
113 golfers came out to celebrate Stan Fry’s birthday
and to play in a large competition held on one of the premier courses of the
area, Green Valley, at an exceptionally affordable price. The prizes were
numerous and buffet was well presented thanks to the good work of Palmer’s
Restaurant on Soi Pattayaland Two.

Winchester Club closing the gap on Shakey Pete’s
Pattaya Sports Club Friday Bowling League
Winchester Club closed to within one half a point of
first place Shakey Pete’s by taking three points from last place Three
Sisters. In a match where both teams really bowled bad no good games or
series were bowled and lanes 5 and 6 were the winner.
200
bowlers Mio, La & Ken week 23, Tue and Kran week 24.
Shakey Pete’s managed a two-two split with Nice &
Sleazy. Tue helped Nice & Sleazy to win total pins with games of 190,
166, 243, and 599 total pins.
Cafe Ole took three points from House of the Golden Coin,
with Cafe Ole’s Udom knocking down 516 pins and Nut toppling 501. Ooy led
Golden Coin with a 517 series and Captain Mio, bowling below form, picked
off 508.
The team no one could have beat on this day was Cafe Kronborg. VFW Post
9876 ran into a hot bowling House of the Golden Coin team last week and had
no chance on this day either as all four Kronborg players bowled great
series. Captain Kran had a 247 game, 577 series, Suraphan a 567 series,
Konrad knocked down 511 pins and Bill pushed over 510. VFW Post 9876 should
have stayed home.
Tue makes up more ground
Cafe Kronborg Monday Bowling League
On Monday Oct. 14 Tue’s team again made up ground on
Mio’s Cafe Kronborg Monday Bowling League lead, this time by beating
Jeed’s team 3-1, with Tue bowling a 207 game and Wan on Jeed’s team a
222 game. It looks like Wan’s new balls are starting to work.
From
left: Tue 207, Ooy 205, Kran 229, Toy 215, and Wan 222.
Mio’s team got beaten by La’s 3-1. La was helped well
by Toy and Ooy bowling 215 & 205 games.
In the last game Bill’s team had another good week, beating Kran’s
team 3-1 in a very hard fought match, where it came down to the last ball in
each game. Kran’s game of 229 was just enough to save one point.
Pattaya City and Horseshoe Point present 3rd Mountain Bike Competition 2002 for HRH Princess Soamsawali Trophy
Songklod Kaewvisit
Mountain bike enthusiasts get ready, as the 3rd Mountain
Bike Competition 2002 is right around the corner. The competition will be
held at Horseshoe Point Resort and Country Club on November 3rd.
Horseshoe
Point Resort and Country Club representatives and city officials announce
the 3rd Mountain Bike Competition 2002 will be held at Horseshoe Point
Resort and Country Club on November 3.
The city has been planning this energetic and
eco-friendly tourism-enhancing event for more than 4 months and it is
expected to be another very successful event organized by Pattaya City. Many
helping hands have joined together from both government and private sectors
to make this competition possible. The Horseshoe Point Resort has generously
agreed to put its professional racing track at the disposal of the
competitors and provide them with accommodation.
Thavil Meekeaw, resident manager of the Horseshoe Point
resort said, “It is an honor to be hosting such a big event. We are
delighted to receive these fine athletes from all over the nation and this
year’s competition should be the best one yet.”
Money raised from this charity event will go to support
Pattaya School No. 1 for computers and school equipment, the highway police
unit, Lions Club of Naklua, and Maprachan Dam beautification.
Races are divided into several categories according to
age and distance, 10 km, 20 km, and 40 km.
Anyone interested in participating can contact Chor
Namchai at telephone 038-222018 or at Horseshoe Point Resort and Country
Club Public Relation office before noon on November 3rd.
Races start at 9:00 a.m. The overall category winner
would be awarded the coveted HRH princess Soamsawali trophy.

P.S.C. Golf from the Cafe Kronborg
Monday October 14
Treasure Hill
(Stableford)
One of the beauties of playing this course is the peace
and solitude of this private golf club. However on arriving this time I
could have sworn I heard the tinkle of cowbells and the low of cattle but it
was only my imagination, surely?
Bob
Benda
The booking in was as normal, put your name down and pay
later, very quaint and very trusting but I bet they don’t get many people
forgetting to pay. So a quick change and onto the first tee. When you
organise these tournaments the first tee is always difficult, at times you
feel just like a shepherd, as most people who visit Pattaya seem to leave
something behind them at home. Could be the beer?
Ebrahim
So the first drive scuttled down the fairway and walking
after it I realised why I had been hearing the tinkling of cowbells, the
fairways were ‘not good’. There must be a problem as bare dry patches
were all over on most of the fairways, not very Treasure Hill like, still
the greens were fine and the air fresh, so make the best of it, and that we
did.
Big
Pete Galle
At the moment of reckoning in the clubhouse, with its new
menu, it was realised that despite the difficulties some good scores had
been posted and some good golf played.
Two flights were played: A flight was 0 to 17 and B
flight was 18 up. The winner of A flight was Ebrahim with a fine 40 points,
second was Wayne Koch on 37 points and third Derek Brook with 35 points.
Wayne
Koch
In the B flight, the winner was Big Pete Galle with 40
points, second Bob Benda with 37 points and third Dick Worden with 36 points
on count back over Hwang Yong Hwan.
Having a resident culinary expert with us in the guise of
Pete Galle I asked him what was good on the menu, and he replied,
‘Everything and its cheap too’.
Thursday October 17
Khao Kheow
Country Club
(Stableford)
Certainly one of the top courses around this area, this
Pete Dye designed course can give anyone who is not on top of their game a
lot of trouble. On this day all the golfers had to contend not only with a
difficult golf course, but high temperatures, high humidity and no wind. The
players at the end collapsed into the showers, dropping their golf apparel
onto the floor with comments that their clothes couldn’t have been wetter
soaked in a bucket of water.
Don’t let me give the impression it was all down hill,
with the last group on the last tee the heavens opened and a good old
tropical storm hit. The two sides of the coin. Still, it cooled things down.
The course itself was as usual in fine condition, with
fine consistent greens. A combination of the B & C courses combined,
along with the conditions, to beat the field, but not to reduce admiration
for this fine golf course.
The competitors were split into two groups, A flight 0 to
17 and B flight 18 upwards. The winner of the A flight was Wayne Koch with
35 points, second on 34 points was Philippe Berra beating David Cartwright,
34 points, on count back.
In the B flight that man Bob Benda won with 35 points
ahead of Dick Worden on 34 who beat Big Pete Galle, 34 points, on count
back.
Our resident gourmet says the Khao Kheow beef is worth the drive out here
anytime, and many were seen to tuck into it.
Steve and Saranya
steal the show
IPGC Pattaya Golf Society at the Bunker
The tasty and testing challenge for the Bunker Boys and
Ladies on Tuesday, 15th October, was the sumptuous ten-year-old Khao Kheow
Country Club, over the B and C courses.
The large field assembled on a glorious morning to
witness another fine performance by lady golfer Saranya Chaiyanont, who
easily won the ladies’ competition with her excellent net 69, six shots
ahead of Lamun Hanley. Her card even included a birdie two at the signature
hole, the Island Green (B8).
In division one the consistent Steve Nowell again headed
the group shooting a fine net 73, keeping the chirpy Ciano Glavinia at arms
length (77) with the smiling Irishman PJ Redmond filling the minor placings
on 79.
It was easygoing at the top of division two with big Bob
Lindborg hitting form to win with net 76, well ahead of a re-emerging Len
Jones on a watery 81, and Ian Phillips with 83.
The Bunker Super Sawng award went to Saranya, Ciano and
Arthur Busch who all recorded two’s on their cards. As the afternoon wind
got up the many candidates for the Bunker Banana Booby all had their moments
trying to pass water, including Wilf Latham, Len Jones and the eventual
winner Mr. Loy who took nine off the tee on the Island Hole as part of his
net 93. The returning Guru, Mick Jones, was later to prescribe a course of
diuretics to all patients!
Senior Citizens Successful
at Eastern Star
On Friday, 18th October, the Bunker Boys and Ladies were
guests at an improving Eastern Star Golf Resort for their weekly Stableford
thrash. The course this year has had its problems, especially on the greens,
but the general condition was good enough to host another large group from
the Pattaya Golf Society.
On a breezy day the course played long and in division
one Ken Lill, who regularly hits the ball further than most club mates go on
holidays, threw off the mantle of errors which has punctuated his recent
form to secure the win with a level par 36 points. Only one point adrift was
John King with recently returned Belgian Beau, Remy Guy sobering up on 33
points.
In division two the undoubted stars of the day were two
of the Bunker’s senior citizens, Norman Brooks and Andy Anderson, who tied
with 37 points each, their net scores matching their total ages! Another
senior in the picture was adopted Aussie Des Pearson who used his new
handicap to good effect in scoring 34 points.
The Bunker Super Sawng award was not made although Wilf
Latham had a strong case. However, by not signing his card he also
registered an early claim for the Bunker Banana Booby. He was eventually to
be overshadowed by a thoroughly awful day’s golf from David Johnson who,
only a month ago, was winning everything going. Isn’t golf a funny ol’
game!

Low Handicappers rule the roost
IPGC TAGGS Golf from The Haven
Monday October 14
Khao Kheow
Stableford
1st: Richard Garland, HC13, 37 points (cb)
2nd: Doug Campbell, HC9, 37
3rd: Paul Taylor, HC20, 34
4th: Barry Winton, HC6, 33 (cb)
5th: Mike Morris, HC9, 33
Khao Kheow played from the yellow tees is always a good
test of golf but when the wind blows, only the extra strong contenders
manage to stay the course. The rule was proved beyond doubt as the winners
nearly all came from the top of the handicap list with only Paul Taylor
securing third place and separating the big boys. A fine effort indeed.
Richard Garland led the field home with a well
constructed round that saw off Doug Campbell on count back after he had
three putted the last two greens.
It was also a welcome return for Barry Winton, who used
his famed power to good effect on most of the holes where he kept the ball
in bounds, to take fourth place from Mike Morris who faded badly after a
tremendous first nine of 38 which he was unable to repeat over the closing
holes.
It was no surprise to find that nobody could manage a two
on the day and therefore the pot was carried forward to the next
competition.
Prior to the prize giving Richard Livingston, the
resident PGA professional, welcomed new member Annalisa Elstad and welcomed
back Richard Jones, Barry Winton and Paul Taylor all from the UK, Al Rolnik
from the USA and Cliff Hornsby from the Canary Islands.

Siam Country Club
Stroke Play
1st: Dave Stockman, HC7, 69
2nd: Claes Ernlund, HC22, 70
3rd: B.J. Smith, HC20, 71 (cb)
4th: Chris Davisson, HC8, 71
5th: Dave Lee, HC30, 72 (cb)
6th: Malcolm Clare, HC22, 72
With over half the field scoring within two shots of
their handicaps it was no surprise to find the standard scratch on the day
went down to 70, which was a testament to how well the course was playing
after all the work put in by the green keepers over the past few months,
with even the greens belying their reputation for being amongst the slowest
in the area.
With the tourist season still to start, it all made for a
most enjoyable day’s golf, aided by the always-courteous starters and
staff throughout the club.
The days honours went to Dave Stockman, who, after
showing well in the recent competitions, at last manage to find that little
bit extra to hold on to top spot and keep Claes Ernlund down in second
place, with a great display of putting.
B.J. led the rest of the chasing pack just getting the
nod over Chris Davisson after a count back, with the latter at last playing
somewhere near his true potential. Fifth and sixth also had to be separated
by count back with Malcolm Clare being the unlucky one against Dave Lee.
It was good to see that Dave has returned from his
holiday reinvigorated and ready to take on the world, at least over nineteen
holes.
Back at The Haven, Richard welcomed new member Jim
Moreton from the UK whilst welcoming back Dave Lee from his holiday in Las
Vegas where he spent more money in a fortnight than he can usually spend in
three months in Pattaya, Brian Kelly from Alderny in the Channel Islands,
Sture Brisholm from a visit to Sweden and John Biangazzo from the USA.
The twos, including the carry over were shared between
returnee Brian Kelly and Bob Lindborg.
Wednesday 16th was an open day with most of the TAGGS
playing in “Stan’s Birthday Bash” at Green Valley.
Fitness Tips
G’Day Readers,
Off into a couple of different directions this week and
no nasty eye catching headline for the time being.
Saunas decrease risks of heart failure
A study released recently by a team of Japanese
scientists found that 15 minutes per day in a sauna might improve cardiac
function in heart failure patients.
The study analysed two groups of people with stable,
moderate heart failure. The first group spent 15 minutes in the sauna,
followed by half an hour rest under a blanket every day for two weeks. The
second group spent 45 minutes in bed rather than a sauna. Ultrasound tests
were performed at the beginning and end of the study testing the blood for
BNP, a protein marker that indicates how well the heart is pumping blood
around the body. Blah, blah, blah and so the study went on, the findings
indicated that the combination of 15 minutes in the sauna and the half hour
rest appeared to reduce stress on and the function of the heart. Have a
think about it.
Helping Osteoporotic patients through Aqua
It has long been recognised that weight-bearing exercise
is beneficial in maintaining and increasing bone density. But how beneficial
is aquatic exercise, which primarily reduces impact, for participants with
osteoporosis and other problems involving bone density?
Studies to date cannot conclusively show that aquatic
exercise creates positive bone mineral balance; however, they do show that
aquatic exercisers gain muscular strength, improve range of movement and
increase cardiovascular fitness. Research also indicates that participants
build bone at the same rate if exercising on land or in combination with
water exercise. Therefore, participants improve functionally, but don’t
actually reverse the osteoporotic process.
Impact loading seems to be the essential element in
increasing bone density, so how can you effectively use aquatic exercise to
help osteoporotic participants? Use aquatic exercise to improve fitness and
when the participants are strong and stable enough incorporate dry land
exercises as well as continuing their time in the pool. This will maintain
and improve strength, range of movement, overall fitness and all the other
benefits that aquatic exercise has to offer. We have just restarted the
Aquatics programme at Dusit Resort Sports Club; please give me a call if you
think I can help.
R.I.P. Chris, Mark and Clive.
A day in the life of a front-runner - PH3 Run 971
2 p.m. Woke up.
2:02 Joined my neighbour Uncle Fester in the pool for our
pre-run mobility exercises.
4 p.m. Told by Fini the Grand Maggot (hereinafter called
“GM”) that I am scribe today. Concentration broken. Good to see the
present GM no longer victimises me for spoiling his Belgian National Day.
Perhaps he’ll give this responsible job to Charlie Manson next week.
4:55 New shoes in the circle - and a new ploy by Nike’s
major shareholder, Hammer - now he buys trainers with raised soles to make
his virgins appear two years older and almost pubescent.
5 p.m. “On on!” called. Noting that my running mates
Tampax and SS had gone A.W.O.L. I latched onto the slipstream of two UK
Special Forces guys (“SF1” and “SF2”) who seemed intent on breaking
every land speed record in existence. Good to see their superior fitness
over their US counterparts - who only seem intent on breaking records of a
different kind every night down TQ2.
5:25 Front-running with SF1 and SF2 when the former falls
into a small crater left by a stray US munitions from the Vietnam War. SF2
continues while I help SF1 out of his predicament. Bomb safely diffused.
5:27 SF2 comes running back towards us. “It’s not
that way,” he says. “There’s some writing on the ground up there
saying “NOT IN”. Upon investigation we discover that dyslexia is not an
obstacle to joining the SAS - and the writing actually said “ON IN”.
5:28 Charlie Manson appears from the bushes and another
successful short-cut. “It’s up that hill,” he says, claiming superior
local knowledge. Foolishly we climb the hill to find a dead end, and that
the rest of the field had followed Charlie in the opposite direction and
were now safely back at the A-Site. Cheers Charlie.
6 p.m. Great after-run food by Big Chief Wombmaster and
family and staff of Shenanigans.
6-8 p.m. Took copious, apolitical notes of the circle.
Lots of sanuk, jolly japes and icings (somewhat spoilt by an altercation
between senior hashers - this is happening all too often). Notable icings
were: Hares, Teeny Weeny and B.C.W.M - for a good run and a great social
event; Christenings for Techno Prisoners and Junkyard Dog; Spamheads iced
for being follicularly challenged.
Belgians iced for being Belgian. Yours truly inexplicably
iced by GM for the second week running along with the convicts who stole my
100 run mug. Hash S@#t to Mobile for being the brains (God help them) behind
the operation. Ice spinning by SF1 and SF2 - a gritty performance in more
ways than one.
8:30 Tore up my scribe notes in disgust (this is from
memory) having been told by GM not to make any political comment. You tell
me to scribe and I’ll write what I want! I’ll even go further and say
that the Hash itself (not just the sheet) should not be used for anybody’s
personal or political agenda.
8:31 Threatened by a lance-corporal in the Belgian Mafia
for daring to have words with his Fuhrer. Has everyone gone mad!? This fun
run just ain’t fun no more.
Summary - Good run, very good food at A-Site and courtesy
of Oh La La Bar. Also (Fester tells me) very cheap drinks at Oh La La (50 bt
each) - well done! However, too much small mindedness, too many personal
vendettas and cliques forming. This is a drinking club with a running
problem in more ways than one - and until the running problem is resolved,
things won’t get better. On Off - F the Truth
Caggs takes top spot
PSC Three Sisters Golf
With beautiful weather and Siam drying out a bit, scores
came tumbling down. Dick Caggiano led the field with 43 points. Dick shot 24
points on the front then stumbled a bit on the back with 19 points. This was
more than enough to win the bragging rights for the day although others shot
fairly well.
Dick
Caggiano won the ‘Bragging Rights’ in his 17 year old CUDD shirt at the
3 Sister competition 14 October 02. Carl Bauman refused to accept the
‘honor’ of holding the bag!
Following Dick with 41 points was Alan Pearce. Alan has
been near the top for quite a while and should be coming down in handicap.
Just behind Alan with 40 points was Herb Ishinaga with 40 points. This was
the first time Herb has come in under his handicap for quite sometime.
Holding the bag for the week was Carl Baumann. Carl came close last week
and finally succumbed to the pressure. Right on Carl’s heels was Eddie
Rudkin with 26 points. Eddie has been trying to get the bag for a couple of
weeks - one of these days Eddie will manage to get a hold of it.

count back to collect the Lewiinski-Orchid Monthly Medal. All three will be
eligible for entry into the Gold Competition for 2002 held just after the
year’s end. Stan Fry and Eddie Blackwell were but a stroke back of the top
logjam. Darren Smith, who joined Ian Ashenden as the only players to break
80, also had two nearest the pin awards, a testimony to the quality of his
play.

1st A Flight - Pete Murray - 43 points
2nd A Flight - Bill Collis - 41 points

3rd B Flight - Paddy Wilson - 37 points
Pete Murray, whose years of golf are liberally sprinkled
with success, added to the chapter titled “Pattaya” as he logged his
first sub-eighty round on the Eastern Seaboard, shooting a solid 77, good
for 43 points. The grizzled veteran who always hits solid shots tee to green
finally conquered his sometime rogue putter. When that happens, the field,
as happened this day, doesn’t have a chance.
Bill Collis and Eddie Blackwell, who both had 41 points
while shooting 79’s, joined Pete on the A Flight podium.
The level of play in the sixteen member A Flight
(handicap 12 and under) was incredible as one shot 69, five were in the
70’s and 13 shot sub-85.
Svein “Sandbagger” Vistung, widely regarded as the
quickest player in Pattaya, showed that you needn’t dally on the golf
course as he led the B flight field with 39 points. Brian Wilkinson stepped
to the pay window a second time on the week, as he edged Paddy Wilson, 38 to
37 points, for second.

2nd A Flight - Ian Ashenden - net 69
3rd A Flight - Rick Sharp - net 72
1st B Flight - Eddie Beilby - net 71
2nd B Flight - Neil Cameron - net 73
3rd B Flight - Steve Donovan - net 73
Scheduling conflicts forced a change of venues from
Bangpra to Natural Park Resort. While it is a great loss to miss a day at
Bangpra, the field had no complaints as they were greeted by a
well-conditioned course with excellent greens. Pete Stonebridge, who had
been in the “zone” prior to his 6-week hiatus in England and the U.S.,
had seen his handicap creep up to a 13. That migration will be abruptly
halted when his gross 78, net 65 is entered into the handicap system. The 78
gross is a career best and bettered the field by four strokes!
Ian Ashenden continued his fine play with a gross 69.
Having to play off a merciless zero handicap has prevented Ian from ever
garnering a place on the podium until this second place finish.
Rick Sharp completed the A Flight winners list with a
count back victory over Arch Armstrong.
Eddie Beilby, who is a frequent visitor to Pattaya took
the gold in B flight with a net 71 despite having a 10 on the par 4 third
hole on the A side! Neil Cameron was the big winner in a three-way count
back between Steve Donovan and Brian Wilkinson. The latter came up empty
handed despite having a brilliant 39 on the front side C course.

Paulaner Bangkok International Rugby Sevens to go ahead this weekend at Police Stadium despite Bali Tragedy
October 25-27, Police Club/Stadium Complex, Bangkok
Chairman of the Paulaner Bangkok Sevens, Colonel David
Dufall announced that the Bangkok Sevens is to go ahead this weekend despite
the blanket of bereavement hovering above the city’s rugby community
following the senseless bombing in Indonesia last weekend that claimed the
lives of scores of rugby players attending the Bali Tens Tournament.
Colonel Dufall stated he has been in consultation with
diplomatic staff and police headquarters specialists to determine what
additional levels of protection may be appropriate in Bangkok to allay any
possible concerns players and supporters may have about attending the event.
The police have assured him that precautionary measures will be put in place
to raise current levels of personal protection at selected locations within
the city.
Sadly, the Indonesian Club ISCI who lost five members in
the blast, have withdrawn from the Bangkok Tournament. One minute’s
silence will be observed for victims of the Bali outrage on Saturday
afternoon at the Stadium.
The Men’s Champion-Ferodo Cup Competition looks like
being the toughest yet with star teams, Staroba Orange, NZ Legends, British
Army and NS Wanderers all on their way for the Sevens next weekend.
Staroba Orange has been developed from two top clubs from
Fiji and Malaysia, the Vio Club (Latuoka Rugby Union) and Bantura Orange
respectively. Five players have been recruited from Fiji, all of whom have
had representation at the Fiji national level with coach/player Ilaitimi (Jimilai)
Nasau, Viliame Romanu and Joseva Vunisa having played international sevens.
Romanu and Vunisa were both recruited in Kuala Lumpur this year to play for
Fiji when several players from the national team were injured during the IRB
Sevens. Top Bantura Orange players Badrul Hisham Basri and Mohd Shahuddin
Mohd have joined Staroba Orange and the team has already had many successes
at the Hat Yai 7s and Selangor 15s competitions.
The NZ Legends are an invitational team who select
players from various teams throughout New Zealand. Their players include the
‘seasoned campaigner’ through to the young ‘up and comer’ and the
‘Legends’ provides an opportunity for many players to experience their
first international tournament and to shine at a higher level. 2001 NZ
Legend Sam Harding played for the All Blacks this year. Under the Legends
motto ‘Serious Rugby Played for Fun’ three players are expected to stand
out, NZ representative players Bryan Milne, U19s and U21s Clarke Dermody and
Jimmy Cowan.
Surprise Middlesex 7s winners the British Army are also
entered for the Singapore 7s next month and are very strong contenders to
take the Champion-Ferodo Cup title. Following Middlesex team manager Howard
Graham stated four Army players were selected for the national squad and
promising U21 representatives are replacing them. The Army side have been
preparing for the Bangkok Sevens for some time and have assembled another
top side which now includes a strong meld of experienced and newer players.
The NS Wanderers are no strangers to the Bangkok
Tournament having been beaten in last year’s final in very muddy
conditions by Fijian Sevens masters, Davetalevu. The Wanderers, however,
also have a strong mix of top Malaysian and Fijian players and is coached by
former Fijian National 7s master, Tomasi Cama. The team has been bolstered
by the inclusion of Fijians Filamoni Seru and Iwoni Seru and the Wanderers
own Razak Manaf and Fahmi Jalil.
The high standard of teams in the Cup is mirrored in the
Sequoya Mazda Plate and Brunsworth Ltd Bowl competitions where the
Southerners, Thai Navy and Police and Kasetart sides will need to play well
against Beecroft-Cherrybrook, Alcatel and the South Darwin ‘Bad Bunnies’
to stay in the race for the honours.
In the Thaigem.com Women’s Division, the Royal
Australian Navy team look very strong contenders for the title but are
expected to be pushed by the experienced Singapore Blacks sides. The Navy
girls have been selected from all Australian States and are intent on
developing their sevens techniques in anticipation of future inter-service
clashes prior to combined services and national team selection trials.
Rounding out the program is the Pepsi Trophy for the Boys
U/14 years up-country “Rugby Challenge” on Friday and Saturday at Muong
Thong Thani Stadium and the Veteran’s Division to be played at Bangkok
Patana School Friday afternoon.
The women’s competition will commence at 1 p.m. on
Friday afternoon while the men’s competition will kick off at 9 a.m. on
both Saturday and Sunday.
Lions Club Fun Golf, Grand Buffet and Super Prize Draw this weekend
The International Lions Club of Jomtien would like to
remind Pattaya they are holding a Fun Golf, Grand Buffet and Super Prize
Draw on Saturday October 26 at the Diana Driving Range, North Pattaya.
It is going to be a big event and there are a large
number of super prizes on offer. The Fun Golf prizes include medical checks
at the Bangkok Pattaya Hospital, for the brave hearted bungee and parachute
jumps, weekends away, dinners, spa and beauty treatments, scuba dive
courses, and fitness center membership.
The Grand Prize Draw offers a motorbike, mobile phones,
flight ticket, holiday cruise, home entertainment center, mountain bike,
dining out and weekends away.
Why are we doing this? The Lions Club of Jomtien has
undertaken the task of rebuilding and refurbishing the Jomtien District
Hospital located opposite Soi Wat Boon on Sukhumvit Road. They are going to
enclose the ground floor area and create two trauma rooms, inside toilets,
five observation and recovery beds, a sluice and sanitary area and a secure
medical store.
Upstairs they will build two HIV/AIDS counselling rooms
and a hygienic food preparation area. Ambitious plans indeed, but Club
members recognise the urgent need for this work. The hospital serves a
patient base of over 9,000 people and regularly provides medical attention
to more than 600 patients per month with very little financial support.
The Club invites Pattaya to support this humanitarian
cause and buy tickets for the event. Even non-golfers should come along as
the emphasis is on fun. There will be entertainment throughout the event
including Pattaya’s favourite Elvis and the champion cheerleader troupe of
Thailand as well as dancers and musicians.
It is a family event so bring the kids and enjoy
yourselves; yes there will be kiddies’ games as well. The event starts at
4 p.m. and the cost is 500 baht for a book of five draw tickets, which
includes entry to the Fun Golf and Buffet. For those who just want to play
Fun Golf, enjoy the buffet and entertainment the cost is just 150 baht.
Children under 120 cm gain entry free.
Tickets are available at: S.C.R. Homefinder 038 420
960/1, The 2nd Hand Center 038 426 859, and Premier Homes 038 231 931. Call
and have your tickets delivered, or you can buy them at the Diana Driving
Range on the day.
The Square Ring
by Howie Reed
Tomorrow night in Davao City, Philippines, Thailand’s
Fabbrakob Rakkiatgym (35-2) tries to heist the crown from the King of the
IBF Super Bantam Weight Champ Manny Pacquiao (35-2). This is one of those
times when the key to the fight might not be location. Like Real Estate a
fight in Asia usually depends on location, location and location. Here’s a
case where maybe Rakkiatgym will actually have better than a 50-50 chance.
There are a couple of reasons for this optimism.
Rakkiatgym hasn’t lost a fight since June of 1993 running off a string of
33 on the trot. Rakkiatgym has been in “big” fights before and always
performed well. Unlike many fights in a foreign country the referee will not
be a “homer” in any sense of the word. New Zealand’s Bruce McTavish is
probably one of the most respected international referees and judges in the
world. He’s worked more major championship fights than “Lady with
numbers” at Tim’s.
Last December there was a rumor that he was seen in the
company of a “boxing writer” checking out the music and sipping ice team
as the Guest of Monkey House Fred at the TQ. Please don’t say anything
about him being seen with a “boxing writer”. This could bring on dire
consequences, serious penalties and destroy a lifetime of hard work and
dedication. The judges will represent three so called “third world
countries”: Thailand, Philippines and New Jersey.
Manny Pacquiao may be an unknown to sports fans but to
hard-core boxing fans he’s the “next” big “real deal” just waiting
to happen. Pacquiao should also be no stranger to boxing fans in the Land of
Smiles. In 1998 Manny came to Bangkok were he lifted the WBC flyweight title
away from local favorite Chartchai Sasakul (40-2) with an 8 th
round TKO. Pacquiao held the title less than a year when a return trip to
Thailand resulted in a 3 round KO at the hands of Medgoen Singsurat (27-2).
With the loss of the title, Pacquiao moved up in weight
to super bantam. Often a move up in weight means a decrease in power. That
wasn’t the case here. Pacquiao reeled off a string of 7 KO’s culminating
in Las Vegas when he won the IBF Super Bantam Title from Lehlohonolo Ledwaba
(W TKO). This will be his third IBF Title defense and probably his most
difficult. Rakkiatgym has a good set of “whiskers” with only a lone KO
loss early in his career at the hands of World Class Saohin Srithai Condo.
He reversed the loss later with a 6 round decision.
Hooks and Jabs. In order to qualify as a boxing
column there has to be a section called “Hooks and Jabs”. For what
it’s worth, an attorney for John Ruiz told someone who told The Square
Ring “that Roy Jones has finally decided to challenge Ruiz for the WBA
heavyweight title. Cardinale received the news from promoter Don King, who
said the fight will take place on March 1, 2003 at the Thomas & Mack
Center in Las Vegas.” Is that believable? Yes, if you also believe that
love is eternal.
There is ugly and then there is “really ugly”. Rumor
has it that if the above-mentioned fight falls apart then it will be
Ruiz-Johnson II. Not fair to living things or baht cab drivers. Couple of
fights coming up that have nothing to do with world titles but are just
“marquee” match ups. November 3 the conqueror of Naseem Hamed, Marco
Antonio Barrera (55-3) and Johnny Tapia (52-2-2) mix in up for no title just
big bucks. The MGM Grand in Vegas gets the action. Tapia lost his IBF title
for taking the fight but heck with the money he’s getting he can wear
suspenders. Wayne McCullough (25-3) is fighting one of the world famous TBA
Brothers in Belfast before his title shot early next year.
Now here’s one for the books. On November 9 in Bangkok
Deeden Kengkarun (21-6-2) is going to fight Marvin Tampos (9-1). The fight
will not be for Kengkarun’s bogus PABA Light Fly Title. According to ring
records these two gentleman met in the ring on May 23, of this year. At that
time Tampos had a record of 0-0. Tampos won by a KO in 7. He’s had no
fights since then. Now his record is 9-1. How can this be? “This Is
Thailand”. How about them apples?
