PM brushes aside concerns on adverse impact from war
Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra recently expressed
confidence the country’s economy would be only slightly affected if the
United States-led military action against Iraq occurred.
Thaksin stressed that the Thai government did not want to
see the war break out. But should it be unavoidable, it hoped the battle
would be restricted to a particular area.
In such a scenario, the Thai economy would be only
slightly affected by the war.
He acknowledged that uncertainty concerning this issue
has caused negative sentiment in the stock market and a certain amount of
volatility in the financial and oil markets.
The prime minister said his government has tried to
develop the Thai economy based on its actual fundamentals.
“Today, we are confident our economy is already
revitalized and will not be adversely affected by any external
uncertainties. We believe what we are doing now will show positive results
and are certain the economy will continue to grow next year.” (TNA)
