United Airlines issued a press release to thank its many
valued customers for their interest in the actions the airline is taking to
change the way it does business to keep pace with the changing airline
industry.
Over the past year, the entire travel industry has faced
a number of serious challenges as a result of the general economic slowdown
and the tragic events of September 11, 2001.
United has been working to bring its costs in line with
reduced revenues, and while the airline has made some progress, it recently
became clear that it was necessary to restructure their business through a
section of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code called ‘Chapter 11’.
Chapter 11 permits companies to reorganize under court
supervision as they continue to operate. It is different from bankruptcy as
it is known in many countries. During a Chapter 11 proceeding, United
remains in control of its operations, which continue while the company
develops a plan of reorganization.
This filing does not mean that United is going out of
business. On the contrary, this action enables United to make the changes
necessary to secure its future while continuing to meet customers’ needs.
During the reorganization of the company under Chapter 11
the company said it wants to inform customers that their top priority
continues to be providing them with safe, reliable and high-quality service.
United Airlines and United Express (operated by regional
airline partners) flights continue to operate.
Reservations, ticketing and refunds will continue as
usual.
Mileage Plus members will continue to be able to accrue
and redeem mileage as always.
Red Carpet Clubs, First Class lounges and Arrivals by
United facilities remain open and ready to serve members.
United Airlines stressed that it is committed to
remaining one of the world’s premier airlines, providing customers with
access to United’s and Star Alliance’s extensive global route network,
convenient schedules and services that make flying experience more
enjoyable. Ultimately, the Chapter 11 process will enable the company to do
that more efficiently and effectively.
