HRH Princess Galyani Vadhana opens 9th Asian Pacific Congress of Nephrology

Her Royal Highness Princess Galyani Vadhana recently presided over the 9th Asian Pacific Congress of Nephrology, which took place at the Pattaya Exhibition and Convention Hall (PEACH) on the grounds of the Royal Cliff Beach Resort.

The 4-day congress, which took place from February 16-20, attracted approximately 1,500 delegates, including members of the Asian Pacific Society of Nephrology and invited guests from around the world. An annual gathering, the congress was a mix of plenary lectures, symposiums and lectures on general medical topics related to nephrology.

The Australian Thai Chamber of Commerce (AustCham) held another of their very enjoyable Seaboard Sundowners in Pattaya last weekend. It was a chance for the chamber members in Bangkok, like Executive Director Annie Weber, to meet up with the G’Day Mates from the Eastern Seaboard, like Steele Lambrinos from Kirwan Industrial Services and newcomer Stuart Saunders of Esdesign. Of course there were others, like Welshman Gary (Taffy) Edwards from GE Technical Services, not from the sunburned country, but they were made just as welcome.

David Wright acknowledges the Pattaya Mail reaching its 500th copy.

The large crowd was treated to good food sponsored by the Pattaya Marriott Resort and Spa, and washed down with Australian wines supplied by the co-sponsor Transit Maintenance’s Rod Skinner, who was brimming with enthusiasm over his new environmentally friendly “soft” (sand) blasting project.

Carefully studying the field were headhunters Nisit Krutkaew and Kornkrit Johns from KPMG Executive Search, while Austrade executives Patama Puttiprawan and Sineenart Kuncharoen were on hand to keep the Australian government services in the picture.

David Wright, acting president of Austcham, congratulated the Pattaya Mail on providing the 500th newspaper (Vol. XI #9, Friday February 28, 2003) since the first (Vol. I #1, Friday July 23, 1993).

The function was held around the pool, and with Kitchen Operation Manager Stefan Heller on hand plus Thomas Christiansen, the resident manager present, there were no glitches during the well-oiled evening. Undoubtedly there were some thick heads the next morning when the members went off to do some voluntary English education at the Ban Khao Huai Mahad School, Rayong. So if you meet a Thai child who says, G’Day Mate, ow’re ya goin’ you know he’s from Ban Khao Huai Mahad!

Rotarians say farewell friend and fellow Rotarian Colin Ritchie

Members of the Rotary Club of Jomtien-Pattaya along with many friends and acquaintances paid their last respects to friend and fellow Rotarian Colin Ritchie.

Members of the Rotary Club of Jomtien-Pattaya, many friends and acquaintances paid their last respects to friend and fellow Rotarian Colin Ritchie.

Colin passed away peacefully after a long illness on Sunday morning February 23rd in Chulalongkorn Hospital, Bangkok. He was cremated at Wat Chaimongkol last Wednesday afternoon.

Colin was dedicated and generous and tirelessly served the community in which he lived. He was a police officer in Australia and then in Papua New Guinea. As a Rotarian, in the capacity as president, he achieved the Member of Paul Harris Fellowship which is the highest honor in Rotary.

Colin served as International Service Director in the Rotary Club of Jomtien Pattaya and educated many members with his weekly Rotary Information talks.

Colin touched many lives and had a real knack for finding ways to help people to help themselves. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

PAWS’ Hot Dogs

Through March 1, 2003, over 540 Pattaya homeless animals have undergone the sterilization process and have been returned to their origin or are in recovery. Eighteen percent or almost 100 of these dogs have been puppies.

Did you know that the Pattaya Animal Welfare Foundation (PAWS) offers these puppies as well as gentle, young dogs for adoption? In fact, PAWS has the best animals available in the entire Pattaya area.

PAWS has a wonderful puppy waiting just for you.

Puppies, and more puppies.

Every one of the animals is “value added.” They have known, friendly dispositions and will make a great companion for you or your children. Except for the very young puppies all animals have already been rabies vaccinated, sterilized, and recovered at a cost savings of B800 to B1,550. The dogs are all in good health, and have already survived any life-threatening, early puppy- hood illnesses. All animals receive two mange prevention injections. Puppies get two vaccinations against a multiple number of early life diseases. All animals are adopted out free of charge, although small donations will be accepted. They come with a guaranteed full return if not 100% satisfied. And from a civic aspect, adoption of PAWS’ animals improves the community by reducing the number of homeless animals.

Anyone interested in getting acquainted with the finest animals in town can contact one of the following foundation volunteers (language capability specified) who will arrange to meet with you and guide you to the PAWS site near Wat Yan.

Ron and Add Ineke (French, German, Thai, and English), Super Sandwich Express & Bakery (01) 862-3725; Jean Pierre Fothi (German, Spanish, and English) (01) 808-9318; and/or Edward Gibson (English), U.K. Kennels (01) 294-3407.

Those desiring to provide a home for a very young puppy that has not yet been spayed/neutered can do so. The person adopting can then bring the puppy back at a later date for surgery and recovery at no charge.

Madonna coming to Shenanigans!

It has finally happened! Madonna, the sex symbol of the 80’s is coming to Shenanigans! In a coup that can only be described as stunning and without peer, Kim Fletcher has induced the sultry songstress to Second Road, to be the queen of the Shenanigan’s 80’s night on Friday March 21st.

Following on from the previously wildly successful 60’s and 70’s nights, the 80’s night gives you the opportunity to act out your wildest fantasies from the star-studded decade of the 80’s. The decade that gave us Madonna, Prince and all the other way-out entertainers is yours for the remaking, retaking and reliving!

Select your 80’s star, get the glad rags out - if you haven’t any left from 20 years ago, then it’s down to the tailors (hint - Marlowe at Classic Tailors is used to wild eyed people wanting outlandish gear), and order something (un)suitable for wear anywhere else.

Casa Pascal’s sensational 2nd!

By Miss Terry Diner

Time flies when you’re having fun, and time has certainly flown for Kim and Pascal Schnyder’s fine dining restaurant, Casa Pascal. The 2nd anniversary is on Monday March 17th and to celebrate the occasion they are presenting a gourmet opportunity at their restaurant on Pattaya 2nd Road, which promises to be as special as any birthday can be.

Imagine a 6 course gourmet choice menu featuring some of Pascal’s delicate cuisine items such as crabmeat and smoked salmon in Pommery mustard and horseradish cream, or even an English roasted beef tenderloin with vegetables and Ardennes potatoes, plus another four courses as well, ending up with an assortment of cheeses or marinated oranges in Oriental spices served with home-made vanilla ice cream.

Imagine also that you will begin the evening with the house champagne as an apero, and then follow this with a Chateau les Tuilleries Sauvignon Blanc and a Butterfly Shiraz Cabernet and finish with a spirits selection which includes Remy Martin cognac, Calvados, Grappa and Kirsch.

Now, since this is year 2003, Pascal has decided to bundle up the entire birthday celebration package of the 6 course gourmet menu, including wines and spirits for the incredible all inclusive price of B. 2003! This should not be missed! Miss Terry and Madame will certainly be there at that price!

Soi 6 opens its first live music venue

Love live music? In a city full of entertainment possibilities, Soi 6 now has a new place for music lovers.

The in-house band plays nightly from 9:00 p.m.

The ‘Love U2’ Music Bar opened last week in the heart of Soi 6, off Pattaya Second Road. Unlike many other sois and streets around Pattaya this is the first venue of its type and looks set to offer a fresh style of music including country, rock and blues.

Owners of the new venue also plan to extend the bar and provide an upstairs guesthouse with reasonable daily, weekly and monthly rates.

The decor is modern and contemporary with murals exhibiting the finer curves of the human anatomy but not too extreme. The service, despite the staff’s first night, was well prepared and organized. Patrons were offered a selection of roast chicken, rather than the statuary shafted swine.

Drink prices are reasonable, catering to residents and tourists alike. The ‘Love U2’ Music Bar is open daily from 2:00 p.m. and the band performs nightly from 9:00 p.m. till late. The guest rooms will be completed within the next couple of months. New place, new style. Something familiar but still a little different. Check it out.

Rayong Ladies Circle still going strong

At a very peaceful and relaxing meeting, next year’s Rayong Ladies Circle (RLC) committee was elected. 8 out of 10 of the old committee members enjoy their work so much they decided to stay on for yet another year.

This year’s Rayong Ladies Circle committee (some committee members not shown).

Big RLC events, like the yearly May bazaar, this year on Thursday the 29th of May, and the big funfest at Plutaluang in November are organized by all the committee members; each woman doing whatever part she finds interesting. The women work together as a team and that is one of the reasons why the club has not had a president for years.

Apart from the big events, activity coordinator Carina de Boon and asst. activities Tiew Supha Mongkol present interesting cooking classes, or have something else up their sleeves. It’s a great way to meet fellow members.

Welcome coordinator Carmen Kelly makes sure the club meets once a month and have a good time together during the monthly coffee mornings.

Iris Wens is the club’s membership coordinator, and she is always on the lookout for new women/members in the area and making sure everyone feels right at home in Ban Chang.

Ivonne Wopereis has a very important job as the newsletter coordinator. The RLC monthly newsletter is the link between members, which makes the RLC an active club.

Treasurer Gemma Gibson and asst. treasurer Carla Augustine keep everything under control and make sure that the welfare coordinator does not spend too much money for charity.

Charity has always been a great part of the RLC. For 2 years the welfare coordinator Helle Rantsén has tried to find sponsors for the one big RLC project, the Huay Pong Institute. Three buildings have been renovated and 2 more will follow soon: a school building, sponsored by the Jesters Care for Kids Charity drive, and a dormitory on the girls’ side sponsored by the RLC and the PILC. But there is still a lot to be done and new sponsors to be found.

Please contact the club if you would like to meet the group: Helle Rantsén, welfare coordinator, 01 636 8165, email [email protected]
