Sports and tourism minister says 2.9 billion baht injection will heal ailing industry justified

To counter the negative impact of declining tourist revenue the government is digging deep into its budget in hopes of achieving its target planned earlier this year.

Speaking at the International Youth and Eco Travel Mart exhibition recently held at Queen Sirikit Convention Center, Thailand’s Minister for Tourism and Sports, Sontaya Khunpluem said, “I am sure that we will be able to reach the 10.56 million mark as we have many plans to support the industry during this crucial time. With the approval of the cabinet, the country is set to inject 2.9 billion baht into the tourism sector. The present situation justifies the government’s intervention to help the industry.”

Sontaya said most of the 2.9 billion baht would go to promote inbound international tourism and the balance would be used for domestic tourism promotions.

The country’s “Thailand Smile Plus” campaign will be promoted in countries in Europe, Australia and New Zealand.

A campaign called “Travel Thailand and Get Lucky” will target domestic tourism. Under the scheme tourists can win grand prizes including cars and houses, if they visit destinations around the country and register at the Tourism Authority of Thailand’s (TAT) office in different cities.

Applauding the government’s efforts, Kanok Abhiradee, president of Thai Airways International (THAI) said, “This is the first time that the government and the private sector have joined to support this industry, and it’s a very positive move.” (TNA)

Tourism Authority of Thailand, N.C.C. Management & Development, and VISA International Company Limited co-organized this year’s greatest tradeshow ‘Amazing Thailand Grand Sales Grand Service Fair 2003 between June 5 and 8 at Queen Sirikit National Convention Center, Bangkok.

The “Pattaya Fun Fair” was on display at the ‘Amazing Thailand Grand Sales Grand Service Fair 2003’ held at Queen Sirikit National Convention Center.

The organizers aimed at supporting the national tourism industry by putting together several kinds of products and services from all over Thailand to show at the QSNCC, Bangkok to promote their special discounts to their specific group of customers and endorse Thailand as the hub of tourism industry and national product exporting in the southeastern region of Asia.

The fair included two main zones, Grand Sale Zone and Grand Service Zone. The Grand Sale Zone promoted food, fruit, garments, leather products, shoes, ornaments, handcraft products, stationeries, house furniture and decorative items.

The Grand Service Zone promoted hotels, resorts, airlines tickets, tour packages, sports events, entertainment venues, herbal products, spa, vehicle renting, banks, and life insurance.

Hotels and entertainment venues from Pattaya displayed a colorful setup that drew a lot of fair attendants to their booths to get brochures and discount packages.

Pattaya business operators who displayed at the fair included Diana Garden Resort, Horseshoe Point Resort & Country Club, Royal Cliff Beach Resort, Tiffany Theater and Woodland Resort. Some booths spurred excitement through games and other fun activities.

Sopin Thappajug, managing director of Diana Group Pattaya who had set up a Diana Garden Resort booth at the QSNCC said, “It is a good opportunity for hotel business operators to promote their products to a large number of people at once so the economy can be boosted in the short and long term. However, this campaign might not be very helpful for hotels, resorts, and tourist attractions in Pattaya since our target market is not mainly the domestic tourist group. We must try to draw more foreign tourists to our city.”

Famous Everest climbers visit the Amari Airport Hotel

At the occasion of the 50th Anniversary of the first ascent of Mount Everest (8,848 m) by Sherpa Tenzing Norgay and Sir Edmund Hillary, Tashi Tenzing, Norgay’s grandson celebrated together with the Amari Airport Hotel management team and guests at the hotel’s Henry J. Beans Bar & Grill. Also joining the party were the newlywed, famous American climbers Ellen Miller and Bill Crouse and later at night, Peter Athans (climbed Everest 7x!) also arrived at the hotel. Ellen was the first American woman to summit Mt. Everest from both sides (with the “2001 Himalayan Experience Expedition” via the Northeast Ridge / Tibet and with the “2002 Adventure Consultants Expedition” via the Southeast Ridge / Nepal) - and Bill Crouse is an experienced mountain guide who reached the summit twice.
