David Jeater, Past President of the Rotary
Club of Jomtien-Pattaya passed away on Thursday January 15 in England,
the country of his birth.
David emigrated to Thailand in 1997 after his
retirement, having served, amongst many management positions, as a
consultant to British Rail in London, overseeing legal, research and
development projects.
David had lived in Thailand with his wife Da in a
country home just outside Pattaya. Asked why he chose Pattaya, David
said, “Pattaya has the best of both worlds. European style living and
yet so much of the Thai charm and culture all rolled into one. This is
the place for me to retire to.”
David was an avid golfer and was frequently sighted
on the various golf courses around Pattaya enjoying a day out with
Dennis Stark, his close golfing companion and another Rotary Past
President. He was also a great fan of jazz music and had a wealth of
knowledge about steam locomotives.
David joined the Rotary Club of Jomtien-Pattaya in
August 1999 and served in many capacities including secretary of the
club. In July 2003 David was installed as the president of the club, but
unfortunately had to retire early because of his failing health. He
returned to England for medical treatment last autumn.
Family and friends both in Rotary and the community
will remember David as a perfect gentleman. He was a calm and
calculating man. Most of all he had a most generous and charitable
character. David was always in the forefront of any work or outings
where it gave him the opportunity to serve his fellowman. He had great
compassion for the unfortunate and served them in whichever way he
could, dedicating most of his free time and much personal funds to do
so.
His friends in Rotary always spoke highly of him,
“He was a just a bundle of joy to have around. His vast knowledge of
the issues at hand help guide the members along the right path of
service.”
David once said, when asked if he missed England,
“Very little. Sometimes I yearn for the orderly way of life I left
behind, but then I realize the benefits of being here in regard to the
weather, the cost of living and the easy attitude to life and
tribulations. I must book my place in the local temple.”
Yes David, you will always be here with us, in our
temple, which is in our minds and our hearts. We will miss you dearly.
Rest in Peace. May God keep you in his care and grant you eternal peace.
