California Dreamin’

A spectacular evening with Ernest and Julio Gallo!

By Miss Terry Diner

The Pattaya Marriott Resort and Spa hosted a Winemakers Dinner at the beautiful Sala Rim Nam in their gardens - the type of dinner evening of which dreams are made. Held to introduce the Ernest and Julio Gallo wines to discerning palates, the diners were addressed by Andy Hicks, the South and South-East Asian sales director for the vineyards.

The winemakers dinner attracted a multitude of wine lovers fom all walks of life.

These wines are produced in one of California’s largest wineries, but despite being exported to over 90 countries, Thailand has not been well represented on the export sheets. After tasting (a polite word for drinking) several of the wines, I can assure you that it is a long time since I have been so impressed with a range such as was presented to us at the Winemakers Dinner.

Chef Bruce Riezenman takes a breather to enjoy a glass of wine.

To really drive the point home, the Ernest and Julio Gallo boys brought with them a Californian, Bruce Riezenman, a creative chef whose talents lie in blending dishes to go with the wines.

With this two-pronged approach we were regaled with such items as California crab cakes with pea shoots and Meyer lemon aioli mated to an Ernest and Julio Gallo Laguna Ranch Vineyard Chardonnay 1998. This is a very special white, with a deep colour and an aroma of toasted wood coming from its maturation in flamed barrels, and was a white to savour. Spectacular, is probably the best word to describe it!

The second course was simply entitled a Lamb Mixed Grill, but was a gourmet grill of the highest order with rack of lamb, leg of lamb and home-made lamb sausage served with a white wine whole grain mustard sauce, taken with an Ernest and Julio Gallo Frei Ranch Vineyard 1997 Zinfandel. A complex, and well-bodied red, that again was simply superb.

There also appears to be a contest between the major hotels as to which can supply the largest wine glasses. The Marriott Resort and Spa wins with huge glasses, both for reds and whites, that any large goldfish would be happy to call home!

Royal Cliff Wine Club to hold another great wine gala dinner

Royal Cliff Wine Club will hold another exciting wine event on March 14 in their Grand Ballroom at 19.00 hrs. The event will showcase top varieties from Chile - a highly reputable New World wine-producing country.

On this special evening diners will be privileged to enjoy and experience several Caliterra wines. This label is the result of a fruitful partnership between the legendary Californian winemaker Robert Mondavi and Chilean wine great Eduardo Chadwick.

The Caliterra brand was created in 1989 by the Chadwick family. Originally the label was intended to complement the family’s existing Vi๑a Errazuriz wines. Soon, however, Caliterra developed its own distinct style and overshadowed its older sibling. This achievement resulted after the Chadwicks began sourcing their grapes exclusively from Chile’s prime grape-growing areas.

Caliterra was named for la calidad de la tierra, because it reflects the “quality” (calidad) and the “finest land” (tierra) of Chile. The Chadwicks and the Robert Mondavi family began their partnership in 1996. It was the ideal opportunity for them to realize their global vision of winemaking centered on an exchange of cultures and winemaking philosophies.

Mondavi Wines regional director for Asia, Geoff Cook will join the president and founder of the Royal Cliff Wine Club, Ranjith Chandrasiri to share with diners some of these winning strategies as the dinner’s guest of honour. Another superb six-course menu from Royal Cliff Beach Resort Executive Chef Walter Thenisch and his team truly make for another event not to be missed. Baht 1700 net per person (price includes six varieties of fabulous wine, pre-dinner royal canap้s, six-course gourmet dinner, service charge and VAT).

As always, limited seating will be offered to members and friends of the wine club and prior reservation is essential as these very popular dinners get booked out very quickly. The past two years have been filled with world class events masterfully staged by the Royal Cliff Wine Club that have been highly applauded not only in Thailand but in international wine circles as well. Proof of this is the continuously growing number of elite winemakers, merchants and connoisseurs expressing interest in being a part of future wine dinners and tastings.

Bangladeshis commemorate International Mother Language Day

Ekushey, the 21st February is a national day of mourning and celebration in Bangladesh. It mourns five language martyrs, Barkat, Salam, Rafiq, Shafiq and Jabbar. They were slain on 21st February 1952 as authorities opened fire on a students’ procession in the university campus in demand of Bangla to be proclaimed as the National Language. Bangla was the language of the majority. The movement for Bangla as the national language gained momentum from this day. The incident triggered off a series of social and political movements, and it is claimed that 21st February, or in Bangla, the “Ekushey February” was the germinal for the Movement for an Independent and Sovereign Bangladesh.

Bangladeshi residents of Pattaya led by Jashimuddin Ahmed Khan Masud held a special function of remembrance and celebration to mark this Immortal Day of Bangladesh at the Grand Sole Hotel.

In 1999, UNSECO declared the 21st February as the International Mother Language Day. The date has been chosen in due recognition of the historic day of Bangladesh. The Ekushey has thus transcended the national limit and has become an internationally recognized event. Bangladeshis all over the world celebrate this day as the Mother Language Day.

Introducing Rayong Ladies Circle 2004 committee

Helle Rants้n
Welfare coordinator

On the 4th of February the RLC had their AGM. As always when we meet in was held in a very relaxed and informal atmosphere.

The new committee: Dolly Nibber: secretary, Iris Wens: membership, Monica Hunziker: asst. membership, Gemma Gibson: treasurer, Anne Westy: asst. treasurer, Lai Peng Jonsgard: activities, Tiew Supha Mongkol: asst. activities, Makiko Kamoi: asst. activities, Luisa Diaz-Guevara: welcome, Anne Westy: asst. welcome, Ivonne Wopereis: newsletter, Kiki Reisinger: asst. newsletter, Helle Rants้n: welfare, Anne Tadiello: asst. welfare.

There is especially one thing about the RLC committee, which catches people’s eyes when they attend our AGM. It is the fact that almost all old members of the committee would very much like to continue their work, and some have done so for years.

The reason for this is because the women in the committee have a very good relationship among themselves, but also because RLC committee work very quickly becomes an important part of your life when you are active in the RLC and live in the very close community surrounding it.

It is a community that makes sure that no new women to our area feel alone, and can feel that there is always someone to greet the newcomer and make them feel welcome.

We meet every second Tuesday in a member’s private house for a coffee morning. We start at 10 a.m. - just bring yourself and a snack. For more information call Helle Rants้n - 01 63 68 165.
