Couples invited to tie the knot in canoes
Thailand has been home to underwater weddings, mountaintop
weddings, and various other unusual marriage ceremonies, but never before has
the country - or indeed the world - seen several couples simultaneously tie the
knot in canoes.
But a canoe-based wedding ceremony is the latest scheme from
the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) and Phang-nga Province, who are
encouraging couples from across the world to get hitched on canoes this April.
The ceremony will kick off with vows said on Tapu Island,
with the marriage celebrations taking place on the island of Panyee, where
participants will also be able to observe local Thai Muslim marriage customs.
Once the ceremonies are over, the grooms will be asked to paddle their brides by
canoe into Lot Lek Cave. (TNA)

THAI reduces service to Los Angeles
THAI Airways International (THAI) will reduce its Bangkok-Los
Angeles flights from seven to four per week starting March 28. An airline
spokesman said the frequency of one flight daily had not been enough to compete
on the route and it was felt the aircraft used could be more profitably deployed
within Asia. The reductions will save the airline an estimated US$15 million per
year and will help to boost profits in other areas.
“We’ve had a Boeing 747-400 producing a very low yield on
the Los Angeles service. From the end of March, we’ll be using it to fly to
Beijing or on our India services where we anticipate much higher cabin
factors,” the spokesman said.
In a separate announcement, THAI said it would increase
flights between Bangkok and Tokyo from 18 per week to 21, which will mean three
flights daily, using B 747-400, B777-300, and B777-200 aircraft. (TTG Asia)
TAT prepares handbook for high class tourists
The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) announced that it has
teamed up with 50 top hotels in some of the Kingdom’s lesser known tourist
destinations to produce a handbook persuading ‘top class’ visitors to depart
from Thailand’s major tourist trail, and to visit locations off the main
tourist track.
Launching the ‘Unseen Paradise’ handbook last week, TAT
governor Juthamas Siriwan said that the TAT was banding together with KASIKORN
Bank and 50 hotels in ‘unseen’ destinations to provide information on
accommodation in lesser-known destinations. The handbooks, priced at 90 baht
each, will be on sale at Bangkok’s Siam Discovery Center.
Juthamas said that the TAT aims to encourage more tourists to
travel during the summer season, in particular by attracting visitors with high
purchasing power to hotels with unique features. (TNA)
