On Thursday evening, April 8, the PSC Friday Bowlers
gathered at the Green Tree Restaurant for the end of league free buffet
and free drinks to brag or complain about their bowling in the just
finished 30-week league.
Team
winners first to fourth place: (Front) Tien, Tui and La, (Second row)
Maliny, Tukata, Kran, Ooy, Mio and Lada, (Back) Bill and Gert.

and women high game and series handicap and scratch: Otto, Ken, Mio,
Bill, Tukata, Jim and Ow.
After the meal trophies were awarded to the first four winning teams
and to women and men who bowled high games and high series, scratch and

restaurant. The Green Tree management and staff did a great job and the
music was also great.
Peacock Place Indoor Bowling and Snooker League
In the mixed doubles it was unbeaten Gin who took the
honours. Gerry and Nid beat everyone who stepped up to play, 7 - 6 against
Double Trouble after being 3 - 0 and 6 - 3 down. Then it was 9 - 7 against
title hopers Spotty Dog and finally Love Nest 6 - 4. In the other match
Peacock tried to stop the rot with a 9 - 5 win over Double Trouble.
The ladies singles was again a week where Lek was
unstoppable with wins over Danny Sue 14 - 2 and Nid 17 - 1 to go top 3
points clear of Peacock Sue and maybe setting up a last game of the season
title match. In the other match Tukta beat Nid 12 - 3.
In the snooker George bounced back in a top of the table clash with a win
over Danny 65 - 35. Then Danny came back with a 64 - 31 win over Patrick 64
- 31 and finally Peter gets off the mark with a somewhat surprising win over
Patrick in a very tight game 35 - 32.
Mickey Mouse Darts League
Pleasure Dome continues with their winning streak by
taking all against Palmers. Rising Sun has lost ground by losing the game at
Smugglers, though they did take the beer. Bunker won the game well, but a
thirsty Devonshire won the beer. Cheers won all against Windsor Tavern. PSI
won the game, but Helicopter claimed the beer.
There will be no matches on April 26 as most bars do not wish to play due
to Songkran. Next matches will be played on April 23.

Q Car took all four points from Cafe Kronborg knocking them down to a

Green Valley - White Tees
Stableford
1st Place A Flight: John Emmerson, 42 points
2nd Place A Flight: Gary Blackburne, 41 points
3rd Place A Flight: Jim Wickstrom, 40 points
1st Place B Flight: Paul Walia, 42 points
2nd Place B Flight: Jim Munns, 38 points
3rd Place B Flight: Pete Stonebridge, 37 points
1st Place C Flight: Jez Lees, 44 points
2nd Place C Flight: Oddvar Rykke, 40 points
3rd Place C Flight: Fred Theobald, 40 points
1st Place Ladies Flight: Chaba Carney, 38 points
Near Pin: #13 Gerry Power; #16 Jim Wickstrom
Green Valley is typically set up in a forgiving configuration
for the weekly Sunday outings, that is, forward tees, but even that cannot
dampen the quality of Jez Lees’ 44 points to win C Flight.
Jez had been playing at or just around the Standard Scratch
Score (SSS) (SSS is the CONGU equivalent of USGA’s Course Rating) for the past
three Sundays and has clearly, and finally, taken his game to a level more
commensurate with his age and physical condition. We will see how he manages
with the forthcoming cut!
Jez’s fine effort made also runs of Oddvar Rykke and former
Omanian resident/new Pattaya homeowner Fred Theobald despite their credible 40
points on the day. As further testimony to the friendly course setup of the day
and the familiarity that the field has with the layout, both A and B Flights
were won by 42 points by John Emmerson and Paul Walia, respectively.
John continues to impress with his play despite his task as
Golf Manager to organize 50-60 hung-over Pattaya revelers each golf outing. As
is so often the case, Paul’s victory was his last chance to play in Pattaya
this visit.
John was followed in A Flight by two more scores in the
40’s, Gary Blackburne at 41 points and Jim Wickstrom with 40 level. It must be
noted that two people missing from the podium, local teaching pro/European Tour
caddy hopeful Ian Ashenden and Okinawa visitor Jason Perry, shot 70 and 72,
respectively.
B flight was filled out by Jim Munns with 38 points and
Classroom A-Go-Go owner Pete Stonebridge with 37.
Chaba Carney showed no ill effect of being cut seven (7)
strokes as she won the Ladies flight in the large Sunday field.

Century Banchang - White Tees Bogie
1st Place A Flight: Troy Misiak, plus 3
2nd Place A Flight: Perry McNeely, plus 3
1st Place B Flight: Peter Barathy, plus 1
2nd Place B Flight: Eddie Beilby, all square
The Lewiinski’s Golf Society decided to try on a format
enjoyed by its sister bar, The Haven. With some apt guidance from Haven owner
Stephen Beard, the lads and lasses took on the collaborative effort (sort of) of
Nick Faldo and Desmond Muirhead.
For the uninitiated, the Bogie format is simply match play
against the course. The course always has a par and it is just a matter of
whether your net score is better (+1), tied (zero) or worse (-1). You add up
your numbers at the end and that is your score. Troy Misiak, Perry McNeely and
Bob Patterson all caught on quickly, fashioning plus 3 (3 up) victories over old
Mr. Course, with Troy getting the better of the A Flight countback and Bob
getting the worst of it.
In B Flight Peter Barathy was the only one to beat the
course, while his second place B Flight mate, Eddy Beilby, fought the Peter
Thonpson’s layout to an All Square tie.

Bangpra - White Tees
Stroke/Medal
1st Place A Flight: Mike Allidi, net 67
2nd Place A Flight: Per Aschan, net 69
3rd Place A Flight: Gerhard Schulze, net 72
1st Place B Flight: Seamus Brennan, net 67
2nd Place B Flight: Tom Cody, net 70
3rd Place B Flight: Mike Craighead, net 70
Near Pin: #17 Seamus Brennan
It has been mentioned in this column before that Mike Allidi
has played superbly during his most recent protracted visit to Pattaya and today
was no exception as Mike shot level par 72 for a net 67!
Per Aschan’s gross 78, net 69 was good for second place in
A Flight. Gerhard Schulze edged Lewiinski’s regulars Ken Kutzing and Rick
Sharp on countback for third.
The story in B Flight was not the golf but rather that Eddy
Beilby took the wrong golf bag to the golf course. In a search rivaling in
scope, and success, the hunt for Osama Bin Laden, Eddy searched bag drop, course
and driving range relentlessly for the culprit who “kamoyed” his sticks. At
the conclusion of the day, John Emmerson noted that a bag similar to Eddy’s
was on the bag stand, the only difference being that it had “Titlest”
scrawled in foot high letters across it rather than “Ping” as Eddy’s did.
Upon return to Lewiinski’s Eddy’s bag was found just
where he had left it. The field passed the hat to provide Eddy with glasses so
that this situation can be avoided in the future. Eddy showed his thanks, and
embarrassment, by buying the house a round!
Back to golf in B Flight, the enigmatic Seamus Brennan came
very good with a net 67. Seamus may shot 108, forget to show up, or win the
field. To paraphrase Forrest Gump, “Seamus is a real box of chocolates.”
Tom Cody, who can certainly hit the tee ball, calmed down the
rest of his game to edge new Pattaya resident and friend to many, Mike
Craighead, on count back to sort the B Flight silver and bronze.

Khao Kheow - A & B - Yellow Tees
Stableford
1st Place A Flight: Mike Allidi, 37 points
2nd Place A Flight: John Emmerson, 35 points
3rd Place A Flight: Phil Mitchell, 35 points
1st Place B Flight: Nigel Cannon, 35 points
2nd Place B Flight: Ken Kutzing, 34 points
3rd Place B Flight: Mark Allan, 34 points
Near Pin: #B8 Troy Misiak
There is that always tough Mike Allidi again! Mike was the
only player in the field to better his handicap, in his case a stingy 5, off the
Dye Design’s demanding yellow back men’s tees.
Mike was followed in B Flight by John Emmerson and Phil
Mitchell, who were only separated by count back. Nigel Cannon just out touched
Kenny Kutzing and Mark Allan for the top spot in B Flight. Kenny had the better
of the count back with Mark.
Kelly, Johnson and Lacey prevail as winners

Stroke play
1st: Brian Kelly, 67
2nd: Stephen Beard, 70
3rd: Brian Wilkinson, 71 cb9 35
4th: Dave Lacey, 71 cb9 36
5th: David Johnson, 71 cb9 36.5
With the West course being given over to the Singha Open
to be held later in the week, the day’s event was rescheduled to the East
course, unfortunately as those who visited them would testify. The bunkers
were in an unbelievable condition no doubt due to the efforts by the ground
keepers on the other eighteen which made them almost unplayable. A great
pity to spoil such a good course by lack of a little attention to detail
that marred the day for many.
Brian Kelly playing his last game before returning to
Alderney for his annual holiday, and with the benefit of not finding a
bunker all day, swept to the front of the field by three shots. The Doc
finally making a comeback after a prolonged period of absence was well in
the hunt until he let the concrete holes get the better of him but still
managed a creditable 2 under to take second spot.
Brian Wilkinson led the final group of podium attendees
with a better count back by a shot from Dave Lacey and David Johnson.
Peter Emslie and Bob Lindborg shared the twos pool that
included two carry overs which netted them more than the days winner.
Wednesday April 7
Khao Kheow AB
Stableford
1st: David Johnson, 36 cb9 19
2nd: Stephen Beard, 36 cb9 17
3rd: Philip Cass, 32
4th: Pete Murray, 31
The green keepers at Khao Kheow are relaying a lot of the
yellow tees on the A and B courses, which meant that those tees were moved
back to the normal blue tees positions. This made for a very long day at the
office and found most of the field struggling to get anywhere near their
handicaps.
David Johnson and the inform Doc were the only players to
match their handicaps with David winning out on the last hole as “The
Doc” playing from the usual blue tee position, first inadvertently laid up
on to the ladies tee and then steered a nice looking shot into the water to
finish the hole with zero points to David’s one point and lose on
countback.
Philip Cass and Pete Murray were most surprised to be on
the winners sheet with their lowly scores, but gratefully added to their
wardrobes when all was done and counted.
Before presenting the prizes Richard Livingston, the
resident PGA Professional, welcomed back Ole Stamnes.
The Doc swept the twos pool to make up somewhat for the
disappointment of being runner up.

Pattaya Country Club
Stableford
1st: Dave Lacey, 43
2nd: Christoph Vielle, 40 cb9 25
3rd: Mike Spear, 40 cb9 22
4th: John Larder, 40 cb9 18
5th: Norman Isherwood, 39 cb9 22
6th: Mick Jones, 39 cb9 17
There was such a huge difference in the length of the
course from the previous outing that it was no surprise to find the scoring
so much better, although the margin of difference in scores by so many was
very surprising, non more so than for John Larder making a comeback only to
find that 40 points with 18 on the back only got him into fourth place.
He was overshadowed by an outstanding round of seven
under by Dave Lacey, who is belatedly getting to grips with golf and Pattaya
living, that took the days top honours by three from the chasing threesome
of Christoph Vielle, Mike Spear and John Larder. Christoph took third,
thanks to a great back nine which he covered in a gross 36 off his fourteen
handicap. Mike Spear, returning to Pattaya after a prolonged absence of
roaming the seven seas, at first was counted out by the scorers having
entered him for twenty two points, which was in fact only his back nine,
took third place, with John a very amazed fourth.
Prior to the prize giving Richard welcomed back Mike
Spear, Mick Jones, Robert Murray and John Larder.
Philip Cass achieved the only two to sweep the pool.
Natural Park Resort Golf Club
and Natural Park Hill Golf Club to re-open before mid-June
Bangkok, April 9 (PR) Legacy Golf is pleased to announce the signing of
its agreement with former members of recently acquired Natural Park
Resort Golf Club and Natural Park Hill Golf Club. The two golf clubs
located in Chonburi will re-open before mid-June.
“Joint-efforts have led to a very positive compromise,
co-signed by the Secretary-General of the Office of Consumer Protection Board
who endorses the agreement as just and fair; one that makes the courses’
commercial viability more possible and that will also suit former members who
wish to continue to play golf. Our staff members are also very much looking
forward to the new opening of the golf courses, which will happen as soon as
possible, following some improvements currently under way,” commented Mr.
Steven Willoughby, Managing Director of Legacy Golf.
Former members of Natural Park Resort Golf Club and Natural
Park Hill Golf Club who intend to continue playing golf will be invited to
register at their Golf course following invitations to be mailed to each former
member immediately after Songkran holiday.
Legacy Golf (Thailand) Co. Ltd. is a Thai registered Company
headed by MD Steven M. Willoughby and with three board members: Mr. Chairat
Attsavangkul, General Somchai Somprasong (Chairman of the Board) and Mr. Steven

IPGC Bunker Boys at the OK Corral
The Bunker Boys started their week a day early on Monday, April 5 with a
rearranged fixture at Century Ban Chang, as a result of the start of a mass
of public holidays when courses are full and expensive.
The format was medal and after arriving at the course
they found their tee off time had been usurped by an intruding group of
players from Lewiinski’s. It was not the best start to the day and worse
was to follow.
The course was well presented and the day was hot as the
two flights set out forty minutes late but in division two Andrew
“Smiler” Rides, playing his first round this year fired a paltry net 82
to take third place. Mr. Loy approached respectability with a hard earned
net 78 but this was a long way behind the score of the winner, Len Jones,
whose net 73 hinted at a consistency so long missing from his game.
In division one Bill Hewitt closed his stay in style with
a steady net 74 to take third place. Mark Joshua’s gross 37 for the first
nine held out great promise but the brakes were applied with 48 on the back
nine but his final score of 72 was good enough for second place. Playing
partner Steve Nowell showed what a good golfer he is, yet again, with a
scintillating net 65 and this shone through on a troubled day as a score
which will guarantee a reduction in his handicap.
Gary Matthews shot the only birdie two of the day and the
Banana Booby was awarded to Smiler after a caddy had picked up his ball,
three inches from the hole, and forgot to mark it!
The presentation at the OK Corral was fraught with
problems as three Lewiinski’s competitors claimed they were also playing
in the same Bunker Boys’ tournament, and all three claimed their prizes. A
hasty call to the R & A in Scotland gave clarification. It is not
against the Rules of Golf to play in two tournaments on the same course at
the same time, if the format is the same, but as Lewiinski’s were playing
bogey and the Bunker Boys were playing medal, disqualification was the
decision, and the three “intruders” left glum-faced and baht-less.
Well done Mr. Loy and the R & A as “fairness” won
the day at the OK Corral.
“Smiler” Rides to the top
at Eastern Star
On one of the hottest days of the year, Thursday, April
8, the Bunker Boys took on the hugely improved course at Eastern Star for
their weekly Stableford event.
Gone are the annual tourists and the course was
immaculately presented and almost empty as the two divisions set off. A
strong breeze blew all day and the golfers found they had to be masters of
their own destiny to produce good scores.
In division one Steve Nowell and Mark Joshua fought
head-to-head, recording scores of 32 to share second place whilst Keith
Hector celebrated his final round before returning to England, with a fine
33 points total, to take the victory.
In the second flight Roy Mitchell overcame a course he
dislikes to return a score of 29 points, which was good enough for second
place. Andy “Smiler” Rides enjoys his golf on his annual visits and he
usually wins the Banana Booby at some stage. Indeed he did two days
previously, but this time his long hitting was to good effect and, aided by
a good caddy, his putting was excellent and he recorded the best score of
the day, 38 points, to take the second division. There were no birdie twos
but the Bunker Banana Booby was awarded to the week’s previous winner, Len
Jones, for his meagre return of 21 points on a day when the wind blew his
woods to hitherto undiscovered parts of the course. It was all part of a
pleasant day at Eastern Star.
Sue and Jerry by a whisker at Plutaluang

South & East courses.
Mike
Franklin (left) congratulates winners Sue and Jerry Hough.
With both ‘Pairs’ having a team handicap of 4.6, and both
returning gross scores of 70, it was down to a count-back to decide the winners.
Sue and Jerry coming out best with net 32.7 on the back nine, just one stroke
lower than Usa and Moon’s 33.7.
Never far away in third place was the ever present Mikael
Andersson, partnered on this occasion by Robert Knutsson and scoring a net 65.8.
Runners-up
Moon & Usa.
The weather was fine with a cooling wind and, with plenty of
run on the fairways; it was no surprise that there was an abundance of good
scores. Always a pleasure to be back at the Thai Navy course and enjoy the
helpful co-operation of the staff there.
The usual technical holes were set up, near pins being
claimed by Usa Chaiyosit, Sue Hough, Jirapat Pattaranavik and Scott Cosban
(alias Corbett). Terry Phur sank the long putt on South Nine and Ronnie Gorrie
on East Nine.

Good course good weather, if a little hot, pity about the

played a bit of golf, then had a few beers at Bobby Joe’s.
Winners
with Bob, birthday girl Pee and son.
Explains a day passing so fast that it zooms by as do so
many days do here, you know it’s all a dream till you wake up screaming,
well that’s life and why should a day at Bobby Joe’s be any different.
The day, as usual, started out fine with the meet at the
60’s Bar then a full breakfast and a slow bimble down to Eastern Star as
the tee off was at 10:30. Of course as this time of the year is, as it is,
we could tee off at our leisure. So off we go and the course is in fine
condition, empty and we can zoom around, which we do, partly because we play
well and partly because we fancy a few glasses of the best draught in the
business, in the bar.
Max
with the technical winners.
Of course life being life, having found the best draught
in the business and lining up at the bar with tongues hanging out, “Sorry
no more draught Carlsberg”. Life can be so unfair at times, still Heineken
will have to do. And it did. After a shower the pancakes and maple syrup was
great.
We did play some golf, but soon it was back to Bobby
Joe’s and a fine cold meat salad and some ‘beans’ that certain people
had several helpings of, fortunately gas warfare is illegal.
We had one surprise as Bobby gave a Birthday cake to Pee,
one of his staff. Ever heard a Thai Ladies Birthday Party? Earplugs are a
requirement and can lead to nightmares.
Still after that the presentation went down well as Herb
won a three way countback from Bob Benda and Perry McNealy, whilst in the
background the sound of a Birthday Party continued far into the night.

There is something special about this course and when it

On the day the weather was hot and humid and the greens
not at their fastest, still the course provided a tough test.
In the A Flight, 0 to 15, we had a countback for the win
with 37 points, but helped by his recent rise in his handicap to 9, Rick
Evans shot 21 points on the back for the win, ahead of another fine back
nine of 20 points by Ted Morris but still second place. In third place was
Bob Wighton with 34 points.

Golf from The Bunker
On Thursday April 8 The Bunker played at the Thai Navy

Playing the North and West courses David Harvey shot 34
Stableford points to take top spot, John Preddy (permanently second) was
runner-up (again!) with 31 points and third came Mick Ramshaw with 29
points.
The Bunker Bonanza Bonus was not won this week but The

Parrott learns Songkran lesson
MBMG International Casuals League - Week 19
The Songkran festival began early in the MBMG festival
and with it brought the usual mixture of celebration, humour, disaster and
upset.
With the Vikings not playing, The Mighty Dubliner were
looking to go to the top of the table with a home fixture against the
British Club. Buoyed by the return to form of star striker James Parrott
who, after a much publicized return from rehab to deal with an over zealous
approach to Bangkok’s social scene, The Mighty Dubliner were looking for
an expected three point haul against the British Club, but things did not go
as planned. Prior to the game Parrott, seeking to enjoy his very first
Songkran, arrived at the ground in a military vehicle armed with 75mm water
canon and half empty bottle of whiskey. After several moments of mayhem the
Mighty Dubliner’s goalkeeper was being rushed to hospital and their two
starting central defenders were deemed unable to play, suffering from too
acute sock. With Robbo, the Mighty Dubliner’s manager forced to go in
goal, gloveless and talentless, the only surprise was that the Mighty
Dubliner held on for a 1-1 draw. After the game as repentant Parrott said:
“I thought I’d have a bit of harmless fun. But I’ve learn’t a 75mm
water cannon and a bottle of whiskey don’t mix to well. My advice to
people out there is, ‘Stay in. Stay dry. Stay alive.’”
Meanwhile, SCI opened the flood-gates and drowned beneath a torrent of
goals from Bangkok United, Yashuito Nakarta netting a hat-trick in the 8-0
defeat. A disheveled and glum John MacGuiggan said after the game, ‘I wish
I brought me brolly’. Elsewhere, the Bullshead Brazilians were singing in
the rain as they shipped eight past the hapless German All Stars and in the
final game of a shortened program Bangkok Glitz drew with The French 1-1.
PH3 Run #1048
Well, here we are on my 833rd Monday on the Pattaya hash.
Think about that... 16 years of solid hashing, 3,348 hours on the hash! And
what has happened in all those years? Pattaya Monday run is still the best
hash in the world!
Today’s run was set by our good friends, the
Norwegians.
Turning just after Nong Nooch Gardens, the bus stopped
and everyone jumped off to take a look at the lovely lake near the A-site.
The very competent hares had set a run with a choice consisting of a short
run, or... a not-long run!
Both were very scenic and well thought out. Let’s face
it, those Norwegians make great hares! Thanks go to P. Uphill and Odd-Job.
Charlie of the Talaban called a circle after hot dogs and
sandwiches and many beers. Bunny was first in, with the hash raffle. Before
she could get started she was busted by Mr. Manson for no hash T-shirt.
Imagine his Talaban surprise when she showed him her hash g-string! Another
first; well done, Bunny.
Next in was Fini to continue the short man saga. As you
remember, last week he named a young man Mac Dwarf, and today he named Mac
Dwarf’s brother Mac Faggot!
Soon after the sexy Norwegian girl was named Foxy
Cleopatra, and that good man P. Uphill took the ice-cold holy water for her.
We also found out ex-hash-s***-for-life E.T. was actually
the son of Bruce Wayne, and will soon inherit a zillion dollars!
Sharon Tate hash hero for untangling GM’s long blonde
hair from a sticker tree. And then something new, and those lovable
Australian’s (not including A-Holeo), Baby’s Arm showed us the “sheet
changing room”. A likely volunteer was found in A. A. and his missus, A.
Nose. They had only seconds to completely exchange clothes, covered from the
pack’s hungry eyes by a bed sheet tent. With a difference in body weight
of 100 kilos, I thought it was impossible, but with a lot of female
squealing and manly grunts, when the sheet was whipped off, they had done
it! Another record broken! Well done.
I was brought into the circle for some ice and a song by
our favourite hasher, C.F. He is so happy the bird flu is over. While he was
singing I had the sexy Foxy Cleopatra on my lap, and I needed the ice to
cool me down.
A big thanks to the committee, bus driver, hot dog lady,
and all the hashers, and especially the hash bars that put up with A-Holeo
week after week!
ON-ON,
Airhead
3 Sisters Golf
The first week of April was another good day for golf.
Many golfers came knocking on the door but the Goddess of Golf only opened
it for one.
The lucky golfer for the day was Danny Dyke. Danny came
knocking on the door for the past three weeks but on all previous weeks
someone beat him through the door. This time it squeaked open and Danny slid
through with 39 points.
Trying to pass Danny were three previous winners. Don
Ratcliffe, Carl Baumann, and Doug Powell were all in with 37 points but
could not put their “A game” together to beat Danny. Carl’s swing is
back and Don is hitting his drives well so it should be interesting next
week to see if they can beat the rest of the field.
The bag holder of the day slipped out early. He was tied
by pretty Lek Williamson whose picture was taken - better looking anyway.
Lek and Erle Kershaw were tied at 26 points each but Erle scored less on the
back nine and thereby won the honors to hold the bag. Due to urgent
business, Erle had to leave early and left Lek to take his place.
Clive Harris tried to slip passed both Lek and Erle but
only managed to come down to 27 points - one more than needed to tie the
cellar position. I’m sure that they will all be making their move out of
the cellar next week.
The Square Ring
by Howie Reed
Luigi Pirandello, who I’m sure you all remember, wrote
“Six Characters in Search of a Play.” Don King produced “Six
Heavyweight in Search of Stardom”. The latter a trilogy in three acts.
Act One was completed in the desert of Las Vegas last
Sunday (Pattaya Time). If Act Two next Sunday is as much fun this Don King
Production will not end up as “Much to Do About Nothing”. Lemon Brewster
(30-2), an average fighter, KO’d Wladimir “No Chin - No Heart”
Klitschko (42-3) after the 5th round. Prior to the fight Klitschko was a
11-1 favorite. By fight time it was down to 4-1.
Brewster took a terrific beating for 4 rounds plus 2
minutes. Brewster went down late in round 4 maybe twice but only one
counted. In the 5th Klitschko was visibly tired and when Brewster finally
landed a good punch Klitschko folded like an accordion. As Roy Jones Jr.
said, “he’s like a dog that can’t fight on the bottom.” Probably the
end of Fraud Klitschko.
Cory Spinks (33-2) defended his WBC/WBA/IBF title with a
convincing UD win over Zab Judah (30-2). The scores of 116-111, 114-112
twice indicate exactly the tempo of the fight which muddled along until
Spinks scored a knockdown in 11 which Judah answered in the 12th. The Square
Ring had the fight 116-112. How about that?
Let’s now look at the second act of the three act play
by Don King. Chris Byrd (37-2) defends his IBF heavyweight title on Sunday
Morning (Pattaya Time) against Andrew “The Foul Pole” Golota (38-4).
That fight, along with the companion title fight between John “The Boring
Man” Ruiz (39-5) and Fres Oquendo (24-2) for the WBA title, takes place in
historic Madison Square Garden. Doubtful that the days boxing will be either
historic or lasting.
If there is any allure for plunking down hard stolen
dollars to view the fight in the USA, it would be on the chance that Golota
will explode in the ring and go crazy. Nothing folks like more.
Lacing’em up the same night is Ricardo Mayorga (26-4-1)
making his last start, he lost his title to Cory Spinks, at 147 against Jose
Antonio Rivera (37-3-1) Woops.
Last week I wrote about Thai fighter Sintung Kiethbusaba
and the fact that he had only one “FIGHT”. “The Thai was 0-1 and
fighting someone with 20 fights “surprise” would be a word to use. Well,
got a note from Mr. Songchai Jr: “May I explain. In Thailand almost every
professional boxing style boxers will have at least 50 fights of
Professional Muaythai fights. Therefore, all Thai boxers have many
experiences. We have Muaythai everyday just in Bangkok, and in many other
provinces. This is why just 1 fight of Thailand boy means he has at least 51
fights.” Thanks to Mr. S. I was aware that there are Muaythai fights every
night, and twice on Saturday in Bangkok.
“WBC President Jose Sulaiman has finally issued a
recommendation to the governmental authorities of Indonesia to suspend
professional boxing matches in that country until the time their boxers are
submitted thorough complete medical examinations to the most up to date and
modern medical standards. Indonesia was also requested to investigate
promoters, commissioners, managers and all those people involved in bouts
where fatal accidents have occurred.”
It would have been more effective if Sulaiman would have
said, “We will sanction no fights in Indonesia, we will allow no WBC
fighters to fight there.” Chances of that? About like NO water thrown
after 6 PM in Pattaya during Songkran.
Michael Brodie (35-2) had plans after he defeated Injin
Chi (28-2-1) last Sunday (Pattaya Time) to capture the WBC Feather belt.
Funny thing happened in Manchester. Injin Chi came into hostile territory
and did the business. The Square Ring’s Chris Jones reports from England:
“Injin Chi dominated from the start and midway through the 1st sent Brodie
to the canvas with a crisp right cross. From there on the end of the story
was never going to be a fairy tale ending for Brodie. Round 2 saw the 1st
clash of heads, which left Chi shaken but it wasn’t until Round 4, that
the real clash of heads drew blood. Brodie was rightly deducted a point for
mistaking boxing for the NHL Play-offs. Chi realizing that Brodie had
nothing to offer other than a wayward head, completely took control and
finished him off in the 7th with a left body shot just below the heart.”
How about them apples?
If reports emanating from Sheffield are to be believed
the return of “Prince” Naseem Hamed is just waiting to happen. “Hamed,
when last seen, was booed out of the ring following a tedious win over the
ordinary Manuel Calvo in 2002.” Naseem, aka “The Lop-eared camel
jockey”, reportedly has his sights set on Michael Brodie (36-1-1). Scratch
that with the Brodie loss.
If Naz comes out of retirement, as broke fighters
sometimes do, he’ll need to shake the ring rust. How about a rematch with
“Pocket Rocket” Wayne McCullough? “If Hamed is looking for someone to
fight then he needn’t look any further than me. He said he’d knock me
out in three rounds the first time he met but he just ran from me really.
I’d love a rematch with Naz more than any other fight out there. We’re
both looking for another World title so I think it’s a perfect fight for
both of us.” Those are the words of Wayne McCullough.
The popular Irish fighter has been on the sideline since
his fight last March with Scott Harrison. Since then Harrison has lost and
won the WBO feather title to veteran Manual Medina. He now sets his sights
on his May 29 fight with William Abelyan. Harrison is promoted by Frank
Maloney who as they say “has a past”. For years there have been storyies
about his underworld connections and dodgy actions. He’s the Don King of
England.
He’s a guy that says what he thinks. He’s loyal to
his fighters as long as they’re making money. “Tell Michael it was just
business.” Maloney’s not a big fan of either Abelyan or his promoter
Gary Shaw. “Abelyan can’t want to fight too bad as he took step aside
money to let Harrison fight Medina.” Maloney saves his good stuff for Shaw
who called Harrison a one dimensional fighter. “He referred to Scott as
being limited in the ring and a one-dimensional fighter. But Gary is a fat,
uncouth Yank who thinks he owns the world of boxing. He is the worst of the
worst. A loud-mouthed, brash New Yorker who’s in charge of a fighter who
doesn’t want to fight.”
As it’s impossible to improve on perfection... that’s
a wrap for this week. A beverage perhaps? Bet on it.
