A helping hand to the Fountain of Life
Helping kids help themselves
Helle Rants้n
PILC/RLC welfare chairperson
For the past 8-9 years different hardworking and caring
groups of the Pattaya International Ladies Club (PILC) members and others
have been meeting at the Fountain of Life every Wednesday at 1 p.m. They
help and support the older children connected to the center by making cards.
The PILC
welfare team and vice president Amy Chillingworth visited the center to
taste the fresh spring rolls made by the children and the sister in charge
Sr. Kanyanee and meet the some of the caring PILC helpers.
The children make the most beautiful cards for all
occasions and with different teams. Some of the money made from the card
sales will be given to the children as much needed pocket money.
All the children at the Fountain of Life are living in
the slums of Pattaya and are being picked up every morning and driven to the
center. The children of eligible age and with a birth certificate will be
sent to the local schools in the area. The younger children and the older
children without a birth certificate will remain in the center.
For the older children the center has now created another kind of
activity, namely cooking classes every Monday supported by the PILC. The
future plan is that the children will be given the products of the cooking
classes to sell on the street and through that help support their families
and themselves.
Live and dangerous launched in Shenanigans
Half dead the next morning
Bar F. Ly
There aren’t too many occasions in Pattaya where you
have the chance see a live recording of a CD and then weeks later join the
release party. However, this was the case last Friday at Shenanigans Pattaya
when Pop Pattaya All Stars launched their “Dangerously Live”, and The
Bastards launched their “Dangerously Live” CD simultaneously.
Pop
on fire with a guitar solo and Harpic getting’ into the groove.
In fact so successful was the party, it left me half
dead, and half deaf the next morning, following a rampaging night of hard
rock ‘n roll and copious amounts of amber refreshment.
Kick starting the headline for the night were The
Bastards with their usual hard and heavy sound featuring some of my
favorites from good ol’ Acca Dacca, The Who and Creed.
On the album, which they covered that night, are a few
original tracks from the boys themselves with front man Keith performing
“Go Ask Alice” reminiscent of “Alice In Chains”. Nigel stepped out
from the drum kit to perform a little ballad, “My Way” from Sid Vicious,
to round off their set and leave the crowd screaming for more.
More drinks for me and more music for the closet head
bangers, such as myself. The only sad note (pun intended) was that it was
Alf’s swansong. Alf Hodges, who plays guitar and provides vocals, has
found a new home in the south and will hopefully drive out all insurgents
with some vindictive T-shirts and heavy guitar sounds. Nevertheless, good
luck Alf.
Pops Pattaya All Stars then took to the floor with lead
guitarist Pop unleashing a flaming fury of chords, spiking the energy on the
dance floor. Local songstress Harpic Bryant was raring to go and again
brought the audience to the floor.
The CDs are on sale at Shenanigans at 300 baht each or 500 baht for both
and if you purchase them, look at the copyright warning.
“Center of Enlightenment” created for hotel guests and staff at Hard Rock Hotel Pattaya
Hard Rock Hotel Pattaya, despite its international stature, has always
been accommodating to the local cultural and religious needs of its guests
and staff to ensure that they feel like home when enjoying the hospitality.
Andrew
Khoo (seated center), general manager of the Hard Rock Hotel Pattaya,
recently led a Buddhist ceremony with 9 monks to officially inaugurate the
new “Center of Enlightenment” at the hotel.
Buddhism is the predominant religion in Thai society and
Thai people usually keep at least a few Buddha statuettes in their homes for
worship. The statuettes are of high religious value to Thai people,
providing them a spiritual refuge when they feel insecure or disturbed.
Hard Rock Hotel Pattaya, bearing in mind this sensitivity, recently
opened a “Center of Enlightenment” in its hotel building so that hotel
staff have a facility for their daily religious activities. The room is also
open to hotel guests for worship.
