Jesters Pub Night: Shake Your Booty Time

On Saturday night September 18, six days after the Children’s fair, we will proudly present the final event of this years’ Charity Drive at our 7th Annual Jesters Pub Night. Once again the venue will be at Shenanigans and will herald the celebration of another successful effort. This year it is going to be a special theme night.

Eddy ‘the ... auctioneer’ Henheffer, Kim Fletcher and Woody discuss plans prior to the start of the evening’s events at last year’s pub night.

We have enlisted the talents of Nigel Saunders to help out with the festivities this year and get things rolling with our theme for the evening: 70s Disco Night. That’s right, it will be sounds and tunes of the 70s and the dress code will be the formidable fashion of this era. There will be music montages and top hits sing-along. There will be music trivia with great prizes, as well as spot prizes throughout the evening. And you will want to come along just to see the many faces of our guest DJ, who will be full of fun and surprises.

The crowd hit the dance floor last year when ‘Elvis’ entered the building.

Of course, we will have our traditional auction in between Nigel’s bits, with our man, Eddy, the colorful auctioneer. Headlining our list, at this point, are David Beckham’s autographed Euro 2004 shirt, an All-Blacks jersey signed by the team and an autographed book of Martin Johnson’s autobiography. We also have more sports memorabilia, and a myriad of antiques and art objects.

BA/Qantas tops our list of Grand Raffle prizes yet again with their annual donation of a Bangkok-Sydney return trip for two. Along with other airline prizes, we also have a 2-day, one night trip for 4 to the River Kwai, a 3-month Dusit Fitness Club Family membership once again, in addition to hotel stays, meal vouchers, jewelry vouchers, and other gift certificates.

After the Grand Raffle drawing, Elvis and Frank Sinatra impersonators will take us back further into nostalgia followed by our live bands who will play on till you drop, or your booties give you blisters.

So come out for a night of revelry and fun, and help us raise money for the kids at the same time. That’s Saturday, September 18 from 6 p.m. onwards. Be there or be square.

Now, this is the stage in the ‘Care for Kids’ Charity Drive that the value of the Pattaya Mail promotional partnership with the Jesters is best appreciated.

The weekly press articles, detailing progress of the Charity Drive and highlighting the most interesting activities and developments, supplemented with related television features and interviews on Pattaya Mail Plus, provide the basis of the media support campaign. Valuable support indeed, but as the dates of the two ‘Care for Kids’ events get closer the extent of Pattaya Mail’s support increases.

The production of the Children’s Fair Raffle tickets and the Grand Raffle tickets (already on sale) for the Pub Night, with an opportunity in both raffles to win really valuable prizes. People displaying the ‘Care for Kids’ bumper stickers can hope for a reward from one of the roving ‘Mystery Spotters’, such as an item of Jesters merchandise, a free Irish coffee or breakfast at Shenanigans, dinner at the Green Bottle Pub (courtesy of the Diana Group), a shirt or blouse from Classic Tailor or a free subscription to Pattaya Mail.

The support continues with the Children’s Fair poster announcing the two events in Thai and English and the setting up of a press conference at the Diana Garden Resort by Tony Malhotra and the Diana Group to present the 2004 Jesters Charity Drive to the Thai and Farang media.

Then there is the Children’s Fair Program – fifty-two pages in color to guide you round the six dozen or so stalls, tell you what is on and when - the attractions, stage and arena performances, organized games, kids’ play facility, bands, Children’s Raffle, live bands, where the Charity Beer tents are and, most important, the rules for the Children’s Tug O’ War. The 2004 Jesters Children’s Fair and Pub Night promise to be the best yet, so be sure to be there.

Stop Press: Standard Chartered Bank becomes this year’s 16th Platinum sponsor.

Teachers can raise awareness of oral hygiene among their students

Keep that Thai smile clean and healthy

Statistics gathered in July by the Pattaya City Public Services and Hygienic Improvement Department showed that more than 44.5% of Pattaya’s schoolchildren and nursery kids are suffering from tooth decay; 28.95% have tooth decay in their original teeth.

Deputy Mayor Wutthisak Rermkitchakarn told a gathering of teachers that everyone needs to help teach kids how to take good care of their teeth.

Sunai Leetranond, head the department, revealed the facts during a recent conference at the Pattaya Public Health Center on Soi 6. Sunai said that providing dental services to the kids at clinics was apparently not enough. He said if we want to promote oral hygiene to children, parents or their guardians should step in.

The project was initiated to follow up the idea of enlisting help from teachers to raise dental hygiene awareness amongst young school and pre-school kids.

On the day, dental specialists from Banglamung Hospital shared the oral hygiene care course with the attending teachers. They urged the teachers to practice the knowledge they had gained with their pupils.

The instructors were also encouraged to discuss problems with the youngsters’ parents regularly to build better understanding of oral health.

Deputy Mayor Wutthisak Rermkitchakarn said that everyone must pitch in to implement the program to insure that Thai children learn how to keep their teeth and gums healthy.

The Baan Aurhathai youth rehabilitation home in Sriracha, which provides young offenders a chance to reintegrate back into society rather than face jail time, was the recipient of a joint donation from the Pattaya Sports Club (PSC) and the YWCA Bangkok-Pattaya branch.

Bernie Tuppin, PSC charity chairman, demonstrates his barber skills as Nitaya Patimasongkroh, YWCA past president, Christina Bien (left) and others enjoy the show. It is unknown how much the “victim” enjoyed the turn of events.

The two organizations handed over 15,000 baht worth of barber equipment, used for vocational training, a water cooler and table settings to the home. The new barber chair and equipment will be used to teach the youths practical skills that they can use after leaving the facility.

Bernie Tuppin, PSC charity chairman and Nitaya Patimasongkroh, past YWCA president presented equipment to Arayar Nuengjumnong, Baan Aurhathai director on August 4.

Baan Aurhathai was founded in 2001 and has received support from the Ministry of Justice and the Chonburi Family and Youth Court as means of rehabilitating young offenders and allowing them to reintegrate back into society. Many of the offenders have been detained for drug use and other brushes with the law.

The home is a voluntary facility where parents and guardians bring the children to the home to stay away from bad influences. Many of the children stay from 1 to 2 years and during that time they are given a stable environment and taught vocational skills, which they can then use to support themselves once moving out of the home.

Baan Aurhathai is located 204/12 moo 12, Bangpra, Sriracha. For those wishing to help, please call 038 298 222 or 01 806 3755.
