Local Ladies clear the field in
Thai National Lawn Bowls Championships
Brendan Richards
Three ladies from the Bowling Green took out first,
second and third in the Thai National Lawn Bowls championship, held in
Pattaya last weekend. The two-day tournament, organized by the Thai Lawn
Bowls Association and sanctioned by the Sports Authority of Thailand, was
held to select players for next year’s South East Asian games in Malaysia.
Jirawan
Kalaya, Royal Thai Navy rolls the winning ball in the Novice competition.
Over 100 players from the Thai Lawn Bowls association
converge on the Bowling Green Pattaya to take part in the nationals
championships over the King’s Birthday long weekend. With some heavy
competition and skillful playing over the weekend the finals on Sunday wound
up with some tight scores on the greens, players vying for the 15,000 baht
first prize pool, trophy and selection for the national team.
The
Bowling Green’s top three ladies, Netnapar Rarpcharoen, second place,
Thong Omen, tournament winner and Oratai Jurutar, third place. They have now
put Pattaya on the map for the sport of Lawn Bowls.
In the women’s category it was down to the girls from
the Bowling Green as Thong Omen faced Netnapar Rarpcharoen in a tight match.
The ladies played well as Netnapar took an early lead over Thong but as the
game stretched and nerves withered, Thong took the opportunity to win the
final end 21 - 18 to take home the trophy. Oratai Jurutar, also from the
Bowling Green landed in third after losing in the semis.
Men’s
Winners, Theera Maitai (center), Thanongsak Klinson (left) and Rear Admiral
Prakorb Nicrodhanon take their positions on the podium.
In the men’s final the more experienced Theera Maitai
faced a much younger Thanongsak Klinson. Theera had the edge over his fellow
Royal Bangkok Sports Club member throughout the game, winning a spot on the
national team and first prize. Third place saw veteran Rear Admiral Prakorb
Nicrodhanon, playing for Kasetsart University, Sriracha Campus steam through
the much younger competition to proudly take his spot on the podium.
Poranee
Leenutapong (center left in black), Lawn Bowls Association vice president
and Maj. Gen. Niwat Buranakul (center right), Lawn Bowls association
secretary took the opportunity meet players and judges after the completion
of the Thai National Lawn Bowls Championships held at the Bowling Green
Pattaya last weekend.
In the novice class it was a mixed match as Jirawan
Kalaya, Royal Thai Navy was too strong for the army’s Sgt Maj. 1st class
Sakprasert Mitsaha. She easily took home the trophy in the Novice final. Sgt
Maj. 1st class Kiatsak Kongin, also of the Royal Thai Army, landed in third
after the weekend on the greens.
The prize giving ceremonies were held as the afternoon
sun began to heat up the athletes and the markers.
Poranee Leenutapong, Lawn Bowls Association vice
president was on hand to present the winners trophies along with Maj. Gen.
Niwat Buranakul, association secretary. Organizers were extremely happy with
the venue and the efforts made by the markers and referees.
“We are grateful for the cooperation and feel honored
that we have international referees for the competition. It gives the
competition a more professional approach,” said Lt. Col. Phetphanom
Phochai, Lawn Bowls Association office supervisor, who was instrumental in
organizing the event.
He added that the Lawn Bowls in Thailand is still a
relatively new sport, a mere 23 years, since being introduced by the
Princess Mother.
Under the direction of the Sports Authority of Thailand
the Lawn Bowls Association has plans to expand into the larger provinces and
build their own international standard green facility in Bangkok.
Lt. Col. Phetphanom added that there are only 12 venues
in Thailand, mostly in Naval, Army, Air force bases and major universities.
The sport was ‘given’ to the military to expand because of their
disciplined way of life and to build a strong foundation on which to build.
Thai bowlers have won both gold and silver at the SEA games and they hope
to bring home more gold next year after competing in next year’s event.

Thailand selected to organize one round of the UIM F1 Powerboat World Championship
Following the recent visit to Thailand by Union
Internationale Motonautique (UIM), the world sanctioning body for the F1
Powerboat World Championship has selected the Phuket Deep Sea Port at Ao
Makham for the staging of one round of F1 Powerboat World Championship.
The championship consists of up to 15 Grand Prix races
per year. From 2005 until 2009, and possibly till 2014, Thailand will be
included in the UIM F1 Powerboat World Championship annual calendar. In
2005, 13 races are expected to make up the World Championship.
The competition is the world’s premier waterborne
motorsport event. It is televised live to more than 82 countries around
the world, where it attracts up to 250 million TV viewers. F1 powerboats
reach speeds of 250 kilometers per hour, and negotiate turns at up to 6G.
Doing all of this on the water makes it one of the most spectacular

Plutaluang South
& East
Stableford
Turn right on Sukhumvit and you can be sure you are
travelling in the direction of the courses that people tend to have the
strongest opinions about, be it for or against. Still it is a fine drive.
Gery
Wedl,
A Flight winner.
Go left and the courses are uniformly admired along
route 7 and Sukhumvit. Even up route 331, the courses are all liked, and
more important, well priced.
Go right and all the courses have their admirers, and
those who dislike them. Think of Eastern Star, Phoenix, Century Bang Chang,
ask around and see the replies. Me, I like them all. Eastern Star is
potentially a great course, with dicey greens. Phoenix has made tremendous
strides of late, despite the restaurant, bar prices and Marshal Dillons,
and Century Bang Chang has to my thinking always been a real test, and is
not lessened by the lack of a splendid clubhouse. There has always been
something endearing about sitting outside as the sun goes down. Now a new
clubhouse is being built, but I wonder! We shall see what we shall see.
Kevin
Dinan,
B Flight winner.
So to the Royal Thai Navy Course at Plutaluang. There
can be no doubt that this is one of the friendliest courses with 4 fine
nine hole layouts, North, East, South and West. A new, fine, clubhouse, and
the best prices on food and drink, take this course a long way, and it is
certainly ‘The Admirals’ first club on the list every month. No doubt
it has many players who, like Dave, think it is the ‘Bees knees’, but
for me I only play it once a year. I personally do not like the long leaf
grass on the fairway, nor the long walks between some of the tees, Dave and
I have many a fine discussion on its merits. You either love it or hate it.
Clive
Robinson,
A Flight winner.
One thing is certain, whenever we book it we have a fine
turnout for the day, and this day saw a full list of ten tee times on their
way, right down Sukhumvit. One of the good things about this course is that
they always look after you, fine navy hospitality.
On this day the course was in good condition, and being
lazy, I took a cart to cut short the walk between tees. The greens also
were in quite good condition, but we had a strong wind blowing that caused
some concern.
Einar
Utoft,
B flight winner.
On the day we had two Flights, A Flight, 0 to 18, and B
Flight 19 upwards. It was interesting to note the A Flight played much
better than B Flight, maybe because of the tough conditions.
In the A Flight, the winner was Gery Wedl, playing well
of late, with 41 points. In second we had a countback on 40 points, won by
John Graham with Roger Pidcock in third. In fourth was the ever-dangerous
Ebrahim, with 37 points, ahead of John Healy, on countback.
In the B Flight, the winner was Kevin Dinan with 36
points, ahead of a three-way countback on 33 points. In second was Pete
King ahead of Henk De Bock in third and Colin Swann in fourth.
After partaking of some fine hospitality, at a fine
price, we returned to home base.

Lakeside Stroke
If this course were closer it would be played more
often. Fine open fairways, well grassed, with difficult shots onto rolling,
slippery greens, make it a fine test. The large imposing clubhouse seems to
dominate the skyline and probably a good thing as the course tends to be a
little flat and colourless when put against some other more picturesque
ones I could mention.
This is a course the players tend to score well on, if
you are straight off the tees it can be simple, but if, like me, you tended
to spray it around, the trees and tough rough took their toll.
The A Flight, 0 to 16, was won by the man with two
strings to his bow, Clive Robinson, with net 67. Clive on winning the PSC
Monthly Gross took up fishing, and as well as an 8 handicap golfer he is
now a 36 handicap fisherman. In second place we had a countback on net 69
won by Marty Allred. A net 69 for Marty means a gross 73, fine golf indeed.
In third was John Graham.
In the B Flight the winner was Einar Utoft with a fine
net 67, ahead of a countback on net 68, won by Norman Martin in second with
Bob Rasmussen in third. T.T.F.N.

Herbie Rides Again!
PSC golf from the Three Sisters Bar
With the real Herbie taking a rest after his exertions in the
Ryder Cup, it fell to his namesake Herbie Schwieterman to seize the day at the
usual Monday outing to Siam Country Club. Heading the field with 40 points, he
was well clear of the chasing pack led by Alan Pearce and Doug Chalkley on 38
points with Terry Curtis one shot further back. At the bottom end, Gordon
McKnight with 27 points went round the back nine asking everybody if Tully was
playing. He was but Jim Tully had one of his better days with 30 points, leaving
Australian Greg Perrin on a meagre 18 points to hold the bag. This gave immense
satisfaction to all the Poms present after Saturday’s rugby disasters against
the Antipodeans.
Winner
Herbie Schweiterman (right) with Greg Perrin left holding the bag for a
week.
Back at the Caddy Shack the venerable Dene Munday offered to stand in for
Herbie Ishinaga but only after Chris John, the golf chairman had done all
the work! The chairman was heard muttering to himself something about
“convict stock” and left for home to watch a re-run of the Rugby World
Cup final. Where’s Jonny Wilkinson when you need him?
Les Hall wins first ‘Golfer Of The Month’ trophy
Les Hall wins first ‘Golfer Of The Month’ trophy
Monday November
29 saw The Bunker Boys visit Eastern Star Country Club for the final game of the
month, a game in which the ‘Golfer of the Month was to be decided.
Mick
Ramshaw (left) presenting Les Hall with his “Golfer of the Month” trophy
at The Bunker Bar.
The ‘Golfer of the Month’ is decided by awarding
points for each competition played during the month, 10 points is awarded
for winning a competition, 9 points for finishing 2nd, 8 points for
finishing 3rd etc. and the best five competitions’ count.
Going into the final competition in the lead was Les Hall
with his best five finishes adding up to 40 points, in second place was Mick
Ramshaw with 38 points and lying in third place was John Hughes on 37
followed closely by Brian Wilkins still in with a shout on 36 points.
The golf course was in marvellous condition, the fairways
and greens maintained to perfection and on a warm and sunny day the scene
was set for the grand finale with the field split into two Divisions A and
B. Playing together, the four golfers above were struggling to hold their
nerve and it became clear after the front nine that the trophy would go to
either Les or John as Mick and Brian were having a torrid time. Coming off
the 18th John Hughes was two shots better off than Les finishing with a Net
74 to Les’ net 76, it would all depend on the other player’s scores.
Winner on the day was John King with Net 71 to take first
prize in Division A, John Hughes and Rodger Privett claimed joint second
with their Net 74. Winner in Division B was Jim Payne with a level par 72
followed by Kevin Sheppard and Neil Griffin both with Net 73. Near pins were
won by David Johnson, Mick Ramshaw and Rodger Privett.
After all calculations had been made Les Hall was indeed
Golfer of the Month still with a total of 40 points from his best five
finishes, three players were joint runners up all with 38 points from their
best five finishes, they were John Hughes, Mick Ramshaw and surprisingly
John King who almost snatched the trophy by getting 10 points for his win on
the day, Brian Wilkins was next with 36 points for the month.
Pattaya Country Club
Wednesday December 1, The Bunker Boy’s renewed their
challenge for “Golfer of the Month” by visiting Pattaya Country Club for
a Medal competition. On another sunny day with a pleasant cooling breeze
there was lots of run on the fairways and the greens were fast.
High handicapper Curtis Hessler won for the first time at
The Bunker returning a Net score of 69 to take first prize, second spot went
to Jim Payne with Net 70 followed by John King in third place with Net 71.
Near pins were shared between John King, Brian Bellis and Rodger Privett.
Great Lake Golf Club.
Friday December 3 the Boys from The Bunker went to Great
Lake Golf Course for an unscheduled stableford pairs competition. The course
was found to be in better condition than it has been for a long time and it
clearly suited the winning pair of John Hughes and Les Hall who shot an
aggregate score of 73 points to claim the honours. Second place was Rodger
Privett and John Preddy with an aggregate of 71 with third place going to
Brian Walker and Brian Wilkins with an aggregate of 59.

Friday December 3 Century Bang Chang Stableford
The day started as normal, a large crew turned up at the
first and milled around as usual, and they slowly sorted themselves and got
under way. There was a good turnout in windy, tricky, conditions, on a
course that is improving weekly, with more noticeable maintenance. This was
surely a good way to pass the morning until we could get some of Don’s
good food and refreshments in front of us. But fancy getting there at 8
a.m., while the moon is still out when you wake up.

Never the less, these hardy souls set forth to conquer
the course, a difficult thing on any day and particularly with the wind
blowing. Still there was an end aim, a cool bar and cool free food and cool
company.
Well the first to upset the normal sleepy Friday day out
was that expert fisherman, see December on the new PSC calendar 2005, Bill
Knight. Bill had 3 birdies and 1 Par on the Par 3s. As any golfer knows this
is a thing of beauty, however this was only good enough to earn Bill third
place with 38 points losing second to Rod Perrin on countback. Rod is
playing well of late. The winner with a fine 39 points was Andy Evans.
If this wasn’t enough to send all scurrying off for a
cool bar, the news soon came in that to top it all Herbie Ishinaga had a
‘Hole In One’ at the 15th, 135 yards par 3. It takes a lot to excite
Herbie, but with his recent ill health this was just the tonic he needs.
Well done Herbie.
Later back at McAllisters Bar & Grill, Don and Gerry
Carpenter PSC president, made a special presentation to Herbie of
‘Recognition’ from the Faces Bar, Bang Chang.
Don also presented the prizes to the winners. Then a good time was had by
all, especially Herbie, as the special guest, Matt Kirkland entertained with
song and wit, along with the music group. T.T.F.N.

Domicil in first place again
Pattaya Sports Club Friday Bowling League
Domicil won three points from House of the Golden Coin
and with both Friends and Brother D losing three they are now in first place
all alone. Friends went down three points to one to Three Sisters and
Brother D did like wise to Cafe Kronborg. Three Sisters and Cafe Kronborg
both moved up in the standings as a result of their wins. Shenanigans took
three points from VFW Post 9876. Mai’s Thai Restaurant took all four
points from last place Q Cars. Cafe Ole rolled over Jack & Tar taking
three in that match. The bowling was not that great on this day as equipment
and the lanes at PS Bowl continue to go down hill. We don’t know if it’s
a lack of parts or just poor management but you don’t need parts to keep
the lanes clean.

Chi-wowa! Richard Garland shoots low
IPGC TAGGS Golf from The Haven
Monday Nov 29
Sriracha, Stableford
1st Richard Garland, 44
2nd Dave Spendley, 42
3rd Chang Suh, 39
4th Robert Knutsson, 37 - c/b 22
5th Yasuo Suzuki, 37 - c/b 19
6th Norman Isherwood, 37 - c/b 18
A long awaited return to this fine course and what a
disappointment! Rock hard fairways and poorly maintained greens, yet despite
the condition, the scores were unbelievable. Richard managed to shoot 77
gross off his 13 handicap to narrowly win from Dave, who waited in vain for
a 30th card to come in, which would have meant two divisions! Nevertheless,
he was still able to celebrate his 90 gross which was his best ever score in
Thailand. Chang was again in great form shooting 78 gross for third spot, as
was Barry Winton with a 76 gross, which unfortunately was not good enough
for a podium position. Robert, Yasuo and Norman taking the minor placings.
However, Yasuo & Norman were able to celebrate their 2s, sharing the
handsome pool! Prior to the prize giving, Richard Livingston, the resident
PGA professional, welcomed John & Susie Lawton & Robert Knutsson.
Wednesday Dec. 1
Eastern Star, Medal

2nd Barry Chadbourn, 70
3rd Terry Morris, 71

Richard
Garland, shot his best ever competition score in Thailand.
A difficult day at Eastern Star with a two club wind,
which rarely seemed to assist and slow greens of varying pace, which made
for a tough day’s golf. Yet amazingly, David shot 95gross off his 31
handicap to win by a street! Trailing behind yet with very creditable scores
were Barry, Randall (who rarely shoots over his handicap) and Bob Lindborg.
In the 2s competition, Peter Johansson scoped the pool with the only 2 of
the day. Back at the Haven, Richard welcomed back Bob Turner before bidding
farewell to Dave Spendley.
Friday Dec. 3
Burapha C & D
Stableford
1st Barry Winton, 41 - c/b 23
2nd Guy Billings, 41 - c/b 18
3rd Barry Traynor, 38
4th Chang Suh, 37 - c/b 20
5th Norman Isherwood, 37 - c/b 19
As usual, the course was in excellent condition, though the greens were a
little slow and grainy, making putting tougher than usual. The winds were
still prevalent and made for a testing game even off the shorter white tees
and not surprisingly, it was a day for the low handicappers. Barry, Guy and
Chang, playing in the same group, fought it out to the finish with Barry
once again coming out on top. He must have had a great match play contest
with Guy as they both shot 72 gross off their 5 handicaps. Guy had the
better front 9 with 34 gross whilst Barry shot a 33 gross on the back 9 to
win on countback. Barry Traynor made a welcome return to form with a superb
38 edging out Chang and Norman. Other notable scores worthy of mention were
Chris Vielle with 37 (losing out on countback), Brian Kelly and Randall
Penrod missing out with 36 points each. One other remarkable incident
happened on the 10th, when Dave Lee, aided by the cart path hit his drive
325 yards, before dumping his second shot in the water! In the 2s
competition, Guy Billings, Mo Bertrand and Glyn Nicholas shared the pool.
Prior to the prize giving, later than usual, after a long wait for the
minibus to return, Richard welcomed back John Lyngby.
Dave Smith Takes the Helm at Plutaluang
IPGC Bunker Boys at the OK Corral
On the last day of November the Bunker Boys left the OK
Corral in fine spirits anticipating their weekly medal tournament at
Plutaluang, on a fine warm day and on a course which is always well turned
out. This time, the greens on the South and East nines were slightly slower
than normal but the fairways were standing up well to the lack of rain.
Division two struggled to find their form in the fresh breeze and Len Jones
faltered on the East nine to lose shots to par but still managed third place
with his net 79. Two shots better was new member Rob Hornsby, making an
instant impact with his net 77. It was Mr. Loy, Roy Mitchell, who took the
day in the flight with his net 76, despite being five over at the turn.
Division one was much closer, with five players shooting par or better. Both
Bob Pearce and Yasuo Suzuki, with 71 and 72 respectively, were eclipsed by
Brian Bellis and John Cunningham and their net seventies whilst Dave Smith
grabbed the helm and amassed eleven pars in his fine total of net 69! Both
Bob Turner and Mark Joshua took a share of the rolled-over “two’s pot”
whilst the latter also had the embarrassment of receiving the Bananas for his
woeful; net 85, having made a very positive assertion some months ago about
his game never warranting the fruit. Mr Loy has a long memory indeed!
Dave
Smith is all smiles after his 69.
Mr Loy Ends the Week in Style
On Thursday, December 2, Mr Loy led his troops from the OK Corral to the
attractive course at Century Bang Chang for their weekly stableford event on a
fine hot day with a freshening breeze. The course was generally in good
condition and the day was set fair for a fine competition. The two divisions
were cut at eighteen and under and in division two Richard Wardell and Len Jones
managed to attain scores of 34 points each top share runners-up position whilst
Mr. Loy’s skill with his five wood drew one more point out of the course to
win the flight on 35 points. Not for him the wayward driver, that stayed in his
bag! In division one Scot John Cunningham took third place with 32 points whilst
Cliff Hornsby outdid his brother this time to take second place with his 34
points. The best round of the day was fired by Don Frances and his thirty-seven
points took the top flight honours. John Cunningham and PJ Redmond scored birdie
twos to share the Super Sawng pot whilst Brian Bellis came very close to
receiving the Bananas for ceremonially ripping his card to shreds. Visitor Shaun
Donovan used his last competition to practice the art of immersing his
“rescue” club in a water hazard and the fruit was already heading his way as
he trudged back into the OK Corral having left the offending club submerged
somewhere in Ban Chang! For Mr. Loy it was a fine end to a week that saw him
take two wins in three days and when he gets his putter working again, he will
certainly be the man to beat.

3rd C Flight: Jan Eriksen, 36 pts
Near Pins: #13 Robbie Bennett; #16 Jim Wickstrom
The good Capt. put his imprimatur on the week in quick
fashion as he emasculated not only B Flight, but also the entire field, with
a 46 point lashing. Throwing a smart gross 78, his second career sortie into
the 70s, at the weekend version of Green Valley, Jim “Capt. Fogg” Munns
continued an onslaught upon his handicap, which began in June 2002 at 28.1
and would conclude this week at 13.1. Count back settled the 39-point tie
between Cliff Hornsby and Bob Lindborg, which represented the balance of the
B Flight prize winning.
Overshadowed by the Capt.’s outburst were the fine
performances of the A Flight Winner, Jack Grindvold, and the best of C
Flight, Paul Shaw, both spinning off 41 points. Jack’s round deserves
added emphasis in that it reflected a gross 76, joining fellow A Flighters
Ian Ashenden, Mark Heffenden, Jim Wickstrom and Phil Mitchell in the
rarefied decade. The aforementioned Mr. Mitchell snuck a count back past
Terry Phur to claim second place in A Flight. Longtime friend Kevin Moraghan
was a couple points clear of the consistent Jan Eriksen.

As often happens when a player does well on Sunday the
“purple patch” will continue thru Monday. Such was the case for Cliff
Hornsby, Bob Lindborg and Jan Eriksen. Cliff’s best on the day net 70 took
the top spot in A Flight over Colm Mullen and “coming-into-form” Simon
Philbrook. It looked like Cliff was in the pole position for this week’s
masthead notoriety with a 1st and a 2nd in two days of trying. Bob Lindborg,
no buddy’s fool, saw the hot finish that Cliff had on Sunday to win a
count back and slid himself down to B Flight. In so doing, Bob saw his level
to par 72 win a count back over Jan Eriksen. For those of you scoring at
home, that gave Bob a 1st and a 3rd on the week and Jan a 2nd and a 3rd.
Betty Koehler, who is now popping up in the podium positions with some
regularity, took the remaining B Flight on count back from another of the
Society’s fine playing gals, Marlene Prudden.

Khao Kheow - A & B Yellow or White Tees
Stableford
1st Yellow Flight: Rick Sharp, 39 pts
2nd Yellow Flight: Larry Nicholas, 37 pts
3rd Yellow Flight: Steve Mascari, 36 pts
1st White Flight: Sugar Ray Handford, 38 pts
2nd White Flight: Pete Stonebridge, 37 pts
3rd White Flight: Colin Davis, 37 pts
Near Pins: #A5 Klaus Schackt; #B8 Bert Griffin
Just when you think the ol’ Hermit has gone quiet on
the course, boom! There he is on the top step. So it was as one of the most
prolific Pattaya golfers continued his winning ways, this time off the
difficult Yellow Tees of Khao Kheow. It must be highlighted that Rick had
his best on the day 39 points off those longer tees! Larry Nicholas grumbled
about his handicap all the way to the second step of the difficult flight
with an excellent 37 points. The Society President kept a low profile with
sneaking into the bronze while gross 77 for a level to handicap 36 points.
Sugar Ray, who leaves a stroke behind when he plays with
the Society, given the 28 handicap maximum, served notice that he may not
need it as he bettered the White Flight gang with 38 points. Pete
Stonebridge pulled a little count back magic on The Donkey to snatch second
place in the junior flight.

3rd A Flight: Steve Mascari, net 71
1st B Flight: Bert Griffin, net 69
2nd B Flight: Fred Theobald, net 73
3rd B Flight: Seamus Brennan, net 75
Near Pin: #16 Jim Munns
Sorry, Cliff, Bob and Jan, but the good Capt.’s owns
the title slot. Whether done by computer rankings or by voter appeal, the
clear choice had to be Jim Munns, who ended the week just as he started it,
with a best on the day score. Jim needed every bit of his net 67 to edge the
fine play of two accomplished players, Martin Todd and Steve Mascari.
Martin’s gross 75 netted him a 68 and Steve’s gross 76 netted him a 71.
Ireland’s Bert Griffin, coming back after a hip
replacement, served notice that the operation was a success as he tasted his
first victory of the current season. Bert’s net 69 was four clear of Fred
Theobald and six clear of late entrant, Shameless Shamus Brennan.
The Square Ring
by Howie Reed
Now some of you will think that I either forgot or
ignored it when I failed “ to join the Kingdom of Thailand in celebration
of the December 5, the 77th Anniversary of the Birth of His Majesty King
Bhumibol Adulyadej the Great.” Not so! Last year I did mention it. This
year, I did mention that pal Patrick, “the Flying Fighting Frog”, was
having a birthday. He sent me a thank you. That’s the rule here. No thank
you, no birthday wishes. Life’s tough for us farangs.
This may not be earth-shaking news but there are super
stars of boxing and then there are stars. One of the “super stars” was
former WBC super flyweight Gerry Penalosa (48-5). Why? Mainly because he’s
a “fighter”. Try this on for size. He’s lost 5 fights from 53.
“OK!” Four of his L’s came at the hands of Champions In-Jo Chun and
Masamori Tokuyama, who in case we weren’t noticing aren’t “exactly
chopped liver.” In all of the losses a couple of points his way and
there’s a win. He received a TKO from Ratanachai Sor Vorapin (60-8) for
the WBC International title back in “Ought-Ought”. Vorapin is currently
the WBO Champ for what that may be worth. Penalosa retired in 2002 but like
all fighters the call of the ring brought him back. “Money!” “Former
WBC super flyweight champion Gerry Penalosa stopped previously unbeaten
Bangsaen Sithproprom in round seven. Penalosa (48-5-2, 33 KOs) connected
with a straight left to put Bangsaen down for the count at 1:47.”
Sithraprom “unbeaten? Yea, he was 3-0. After the fight Penalosa said,
“Walang time for tune-ups...Tuloy-tuloy na ito. Si Marquez ang hahabulin
ko ngayon.” What’s that mean? To me it means, “As long as they have a
hint of breath I’ll fight’em.” The guy in the ring when the bell rang
for the opening round in shirt and tie was cousin Bruce McTavish a sometimes
visitor to Pattaya.
“Death, taxes and Frank Warren. You can count on all
three being permanent. Good to know that we live in a world where
something’s are predictable and true. Warren announced that Kostya Tszyu
would be Ricky Hatton’s challenge for the IBF jr. welter title T’was
news to Tszyu. “I think Frank Warren is getting way ahead of himself,”
said Tszyu’s manager Matt Watt. “We have not signed any deal to fight
Ricky Hatton and he is just one of a number of opponents we are looking at
for Kostya’s next fight.”
“Hatton is the No. 1 contender for Kostya’s title and
Kostya has to defend against him within nine months but a lot can happen in
that time.” Warren said: “Tszyu said he wanted a big fight, and they
don’t come any bigger than facing Ricky in his own backyard in front of a
22,000 crowd.” Yeah, I’ll bet that Kostya gets all “tingly” about
fighting in the Manchester’s Men Arena with 22,000 beered up soccer
hooligans. Probably the one dream Kostya thought he’d never realize.
A tip of the cap to former heavyweight champion Wladimir
Klitschko. Unlike his brother Vitali who is in training for Sunday mornings
fight against Danny “I Beat Tyson” Williams (33-2) in Las Vegas, Wlad is
in the Ukraine protesting the corrupt election of Viktor Yanukovych as
President. Way to go Wlad. Maybe brother Vitali would have been safer with
you as there is many that think Williams will come out with the title.
“You’re kidding?” Nope! Everyone knows he can take a punch and has
stamina. The two things that give Klitschko trouble. Also on deck is the
Manny Pacquiao (38-2-2) vs. Fahsan Por Thawatchai (44-7-1) in Taguig, the
Philippines. Pacquiao trainer Freddie Roach has not been happy with
pre-fight training, “I want Manny to finish Fahsan 3K Battery first and
worry about (Marco Antonio) Barrera and the others later.” No worries
about Barrera! He’s said, “Nyet” to a fight against Pacquiao for the
time being.
If there is a bigger bag of hot air than Frank Warren, it
would be Murad Mohammed who promotes Pacquiao. Murad explained that the
Barrera camp didn’t think a fight with his guy was possible now,
“because there were too many distractions before the (previous) fight.”
His handlers also told me that his (Barrera’s) head was not right and he
had a bad night (in fighting Pacquiao last year).” So far so good! The
Barrera camp suggested that maybe the “Pac Man” take on WBC junior
featherweight champion Oscar Larios first: “By then, they would consider a
rematch sometime in September. Barrera is still afraid of Pacquiao,” said
Murad. Yeah right! He’s quivering in his shoes. I’ll bet a beverage of
your choice that if Manny dumped Murad and hooked up with DeLaHoya, King or
“insert a name” that fight would happen yesterday. Oh by the way,
Pacquiao will meet Juan Manuel Marquez in February ‘Ought 5" in a
rematch of their barnburner of last May. Pacquiao puts Marquez on the back
of his trunks three times in the first then held on for a draw. A draw? Yep!
Frog judge Guy Jutras had it 115-110 for Marquez. “How in the heck?”
Lots of trash talk prior to Alex Arthur/Nazarino (21-7)
for the IBF Intercontinental 130 pound title in Edinburgh last Friday. Much
to do about nothing as Arthur (19-1) retained his title with a UD (119-110
and 119-1110). The fight was notable only because this is the first time
that Arthur was extended the full 12 innings. WBA featherweight champion
Chris John knocked heads with and challenger Jose “Cheo” Rojas,
literally, in the 4th stanza. The fight was stopped as neither could
continue but Jones got the “W”. Now 34-1. In Las Vegas Former Olympian
Jeff Lacy took another step to the top of the super middles with a UD
(115-113,115-113,117-111) win over Omar Sheika. Sheika who was born and
raised in the State of New Jersey was wearing a T-shirt that stated “Free
Palestine”. Heck he ought to free New Jersey first. Remember this name,
Samuel Peter. The unbeaten heavyweight, 21-0, knocked Jeremy Williams colder
than a pole hangers stare to a “Bahtless Punter”. Peter landed a
“crushing left hook” that had Williams stretched tighter than a tourists
budget. Williams lay motionless on the canvas for 10 minutes before
re-joining the human race. WBC lightweight champion Jose Luis Castillo won a
split decision over Joel Casamayor in what one called a “tactical”
fight. Translation? Boring but then that’s what you get with Cassmayor.
The score were 117-111,116-112 for the winner and of course the female judge
had it 115-113 for the loser. Dah!
There is no doubt but that Barrera-Morales is probably the fight of the
year. I know cause the resident expert on boxing, golf and other things that
go bump from Thailand Vic “O.R” Cross told me, “We did get the
Barrera/Morales fight over here and I thought it was one of the best I have
seen in a long, long time. It was as much fun to watch as the Gatti/Ward
final. Those kind of fights are what boxing needs to attract new fans and
keep the old ones tuning in. Happy holidays O.R. Drink to that? In a
heartbeat! How about them apples?
Dons up the pressure
MBMG Casuals League -week 9
The Londoner continued its’ impressive start to the
season with an impressive 7-0 victory of the British Club. The highlight of
the match being a goal from the halfway line 3 seconds after kick off from
Andy Wild that found its’ way into the top corner of the BC goal just out
of reach of Vaughan Elias who was still putting his gloves on in the absence
of the BC’s usual keeper. Holding out 1-0 till half time the British Club
eventually ran out of steam, conceding a further half dozen goals before
full time.
Meanwhile, mid-table battles continued with the boys from
the Winking Frog playing two matches over the weekend and picking up 3
points for their trouble, losing to the travelling Pattaya Seaboard FC but
coming out 3-2 winners in a thriller with the boys from Patana, keeper Rory
pulling off a late penalty save to bag all three points.
RC Pattaya playing at home versus the Bullies, put on a
good display but were ultimately sunk by a goal from the Bullies Chatree,
keeping the Bullies in touch with the top teams.
The Scans finally found their winning touch, giving the
winless Blitz a 5-2 thumping, said Blitz captain after the game “It’s
our keeper, he just stands there doing nothing but signing autographs!”
A hard fought Sunday encounter between league leaders and
champions Dubliner and AFC Shrewsbury saw Dubliner maintain their very
slender league lead with a 1-0 win.
Unbeaten Gaulois cruised to a 3-0 win over Patana without
kicking the ball as Patana couldn’t get a team together for their double
header, more than one pundit was heard to say, “Not a bad result for
Patana!”
Week 9 Results: Scandinavian Vikings 5 - 2 Blitz FC;
Londoner FC 7 - 0 British Club Casuals; The Winking Frog FC 1 - 3 Seaboard

Diana Seniors and Ladies - November/December
Mike Franklin
The Diana Seniors and Ladies were out in force at Pattaya
Country Club on Thursday December 2, combining the November and December
Opens to see out 2004.
Curtis
Hessler, Mam Trayling and Bob Pearce back at the Diana Inn after a
successful day out at Pattaya Country Club, December 2.
A field of 62 players teed off from 1st & 10th in
what proved to be a smoother than anticipated round. Not so with the scores
though, as only five players managed par or better. The weather was fine and
windy but it was the quickness of the greens that caught many out. Three
putts were the order of the day.
Mam Trayling returned the best score with 39 Stableford
points to win the ladies division, Lamun Hanley coming second with 29
points. Newcomer, Curtis Hessler scored 38 points to win the Seniors with
Bob Pearce, in his last appearance as a ‘Senior’, runner-up with 36
points. Next outing he will more super than usual.
Bob Short had a good round with 38 points to win the
Super Seniors division, with the inevitable Arthur Bailey close behind with
36 Stableford points.
Near pins were claimed by Danny Dyke, Ursular Lehner, Jan
Svensson and Reine Helling. Cecil Williams and Chris John sank the longest
first putts.
On this occasion there were too many newcomers and
returning friends to mention all by name, so it was a general welcome all
round. John Cole was his usual efficient self on the admin. While I nursed
my plaster cast and looked enviously out on the course.
When the Christmas and New Year festivities are over we will be out
again, specifically on Thursday January 27, 2005. Sign-up at the Green
Bottle and until then, enjoy the golf and seasonal fun.
‘Win’ is a winner and grinner!
Insurance is generally something you take out to cover you in emergency
or disaster situations. Life insurance, sickness and accident, motor
vehicle, liability, marine, all-risk, travel, the list is endless. You pay
the premium and hope you never need to claim on it.
(From
left) Win received acheque from Jack Levy and Prapaisri Pangtao,
representing Safety Insurance Co.
However, there is one insurance policy that Asawin (Win)
Klaewkla is very glad he took out - and that is a golf policy. This ‘Golf
Lover’ policy (Safety Insurance Co.) is the usual hedge against disaster
and covers the player in the case of accidentally hitting other players,
breaking clubs, drowning golf karts or similar problems, but it had an extra
“non-disaster” benefit. Hole in One! In the event of this extremely
happy situation, the policy pays the player as well!
However, since the fortunate hole in one golfer is
unfortunately expected to buy a round or several at the 19th hole, the
insurance probably is needed to cover the extra expenses resulting from the
well-wishing from all the players on that day!
The Annual OK Corral Four Player Team Scramble
Len Jones
As the festive season approaches and the end-of-year
celebrations beckon so does the popular OK Corral Team Scramble (formerly
called the “Bunker Scramble”), organised jointly by the Pattaya Golf
Society at the OK Corral and the IPGC. Following last year’s successful
event at Pattaya Country Club, this year the traditional “school’s
out” event will be held on Thursday, December 30, 2004, at the beautiful
Green Valley Golf & Country Club, the member club for so many of
Pattaya’s golfers.
As usual, the format is for teams of four players, having
a team handicap allowance of 10% of their combined handicaps and mixed teams
are allowed, with no more than two ladies per team.
Golfers will tee off using the first and twelfth tees
from 9:30 a.m. Prizes will be awarded for the top three teams and in
addition technical prizes will include long drives in the gentlemen’s two
divisions and one for the ladies, as well as near pin prizes on all par
threes.
The entry fee is 1,500 baht, but Green Valley members
will pay only 1,000 baht and pay their “service fee” directly to the
Green Valley Club. After the event the presentation buffet will be held at
the OK Corral Bar in Soi Rungland, South Pattaya Road, where golfers will be
expected to wear their commemorative golf shirts. Non players are welcome
but will pay 200 baht for the buffet. Entry forms are available at
Pattaya’s IPGC golf venues, i.e., OK Corral Bar, the Haven Hotel and
Lewiinski’s, as well as online at http://www.thebunkerboys.com and entries
will close on Monday, December 27 at 6 p.m.
Teams of four should sign up early as the field is
limited to 32 teams and entries will only be confirmed with payment at the
OK Corral Bar. Come along and make this traditional event memorable,
friendly and fun!

What a difference a week makes
Jomtien 8 Ball Pool League
The league table has a new look after this week’s games
were played on Thursday December 2. The poison chalice of a bye dropped top
of the table Woaw’s Pub to 4 place while emerging Hide-A-Way leapfrogged
to the premier slot with a comprehensive home win over visitors Las Vegas.
Hide-A-Way’s 9-0 win gave them the best games difference for top spot
ahead of their rivals on the same twelve points scored.
Visitors Rose and Thistle took a 6-3 win over Moonshine
Place down in Soi 4 to move into the runners up slot. The home team were
disappointed with their performance; trailing 4-2 down at the break
Moonshine lost the first doubles game and the match. Les and Ron took the
second doubles for 3-5 but, again, the visitors were too strong in the final
game.
At Bolaget, Simple Simon handed their hosts their 4th 4-5
defeat of the season to give themselves a share of the logjam at the top of
the table. All games were hard fought with the visitors taking a 4-2 lead
into the supper break. Obviously refueled, Simple Simon quickly secured the
points by taking the first doubles game. Bolaget re-discovered a bit of form
and salvaged some pride in winning the last two doubles.
Down in Soi Welcome, Lucky Bar hosted the Country Club
who looked like pulling off a win against the reigning League Champions when
they went to an early 3-1 lead. However, it was not to be, the Lucky Bar
boys staged a great comeback to win the last two singles and the first two
doubles to get the points and are now only a game behind the joint leaders.
In consolation, Country Club took the last doubles game to make the final
score 5-4.
Next weeks fixtures include a bye for Bolaget so there are unlikely to be
significant changes at the bottom of the table. However, because Simple
Simon play the Rose & Thistle and Hide-A-Way are away to Country Club it
is likely that the top of the table will open out somewhat.
Many happy returns...
Mickey Mouse Darts League Week 7
After a week’s break due o Loy Krathong, the Mickey
Mouse Dart league got underway once again last Friday as Kevin from
Devonshire has returned, welcome back.
Congratulations go to Ron from Smugglers, he threw an
impressive 14 dart singles game, then won his doubles game, and threw the
winning dart on the beerleg.
Larry from the Bunker threw the winning dart for the
match and also checked the winning dart on the beerleg. Not bad for an
American. No reported 180’s or high checkouts this week.
