FC Bayern Munich donates for children in need
Happy faces abound during the
presentation.
Staff Reporters
Germany’s Bayern Munich is one of the world’s biggest football clubs. It has
some 170,000 members in 2,000 fan clubs all over the globe, and Thailand
itself has many keen supporters.
On January 20, Fritz Plöchinger, groundskeeper of the club, organized a
charity gala dinner at Berliner Bistro 2, with the funds to be shared
between children cared for by the YWCA, Pastor Sanay Srisa-ard and his
childcare program, and indigent children in Isaan.
Nearly 100 guests and fan club members came to celebrate. Hot band Artur and
Gerhard performed as the crowd awaited the start of the raffle and an
auction. Fritz and his fellow groundsman Uli Steiner brought many souvenirs
and mementos that could be auctioned and raffled. Bayern fan Niko from
Bangkok translated for the Thai guests. Jerseys signed by players like
Schweinsteiger, Lahm and Deisler attracted feverish bidding in the auction.
Eventually, some 116,000 baht was accumulated.
On January 27, Fritz Plöchinger handed over the funds to the YWCA and Pastor
Sanay. YWCA president Nittaya Patimasongkroh and Elfi Seitz happily accepted
40,000 baht, which will be for scholarships for children in need. Pastor
Sanay will use his 15,000 baht to support children in the slums.
The Bayern fan club in Pattaya plans to hold another charity gala dinner
next year.
Another full house
at PCEC weekly meeting
Not only was it noticeable that it was another full house
which attended this week’s meeting of the Pattaya City Expats Club (PCEC) on
Sunday January 28 at Henry J. Bean’s, but also a considerable number of
newcomers were welcomed to the meeting for the first time.
This
week’s guest speaker was Mukda Pattana-anek who is an audiologist consultant
with the D Med Hearing Centre, attached to the Bangkok Pattaya Hospital.
This week’s MC Gary Brown commenced the proceedings by welcoming back Pete
Mills. Pete’s presence had a dual purpose. Firstly, as one of the founders
of the PCEC some six years ago, he stated that he was impressed as to how
the club had grown and had flourished. Pete was then to return to follow up
this week’s main speaker.
Each month, the PCEC is always pleased to welcome a specialist from the
Bangkok Pattaya Hospital and this week was no exception. The guest was Mukda
Pattana-anek who is an audiologist consultant with the D Med Hearing Centre,
attached to the Bangkok Pattaya Hospital.
Mukda, as a hearing specialist, described how the body achieves hearing and
the causes of hearing loss. She also described the latest equipment which
can rectify hearing loss and which can automatically adjust to ambient
conditions and environment.
She recommended that those over the age of 40 should have a hearing test as,
as is often the case with most medical conditions, it is usually easier to
correct such a defect at an early stage.
Pete Mills then joined Mukda to relate his treatment for hearing loss and
was most complementary, thoroughly recommending the techniques and equipment
provided by the D Med Hearing Centre.
As is always the case when a visit is made by the Bangkok Pattaya Hospital,
nursing staff were on hand to provide free blood pressure and sugar level
checks.
Following the medical theme, Reina Rances announced that the Bangkok Pattaya
Hospital would be making available at the meeting on February 11 free
cholesterol tests to be taken on February 18. In the event of any high
results it would then be possible to participate, but at the individuals’
liability, in the testing of a new cholesterol reducing medicine.
The regular Open Forum was then underway, led by Roger Fox, and this proved
to be the usual lively and entertaining session. For more information
regarding not only PCEC Sunday meetings but also the varied mid week
activities, please see the Community Happenings section of Pattaya Mail or,
