Jameson’s for the 45 minute lunch

   by Miss Terry Dinerner

Have you only got an hour for lunch, and sick of the usual fast food outlets? Then the new 45 minute lunch (served 12 noon until 2 p.m.) being offered by Jameson’s every weekday suit. Last Wednesday, Madame and I decided to put them to the test - unannounced!
Now the Jameson’s Wednesday special, which costs B. 185, was a three course lunch which includes a choice of starter and a choice of dessert, with a steak and mushroom pie, cooked in a beer sauce, and chips. Hmm, B. 185 and 45 minutes go to whoa? Really?

Now, before I reveal how lunch actually went, for those who are unsure of how to get there, here are the two best routes. Firstly from Pattaya Second Road, turn right into Soi 4 (next to the Bangkok Bank, after the Grand Sole Hotel on the right and before Soi 6 on the left). Follow Soi 4 up to the top where it bends to the right. Nova Park and Jameson’s is on your left, drive 20 meters past and the large car park is clearly marked. The other way is to come down North Road from Sukhumvit Road, cross over Third Road and turn left into the Central Festival Center Road (the one that runs behind the Big C supermarket complex). Follow this road to the T junction at the end, turn left and follow the road round to the right (as you have joined the Soi 4 route at this point), and Nova Park and Jameson’s are again on your left. Easy.
The pub is decked out as your typical British pub, dark wood paneling, knick knacks on the walls, bar along one side and plenty of eating sections, as well as large screen TV and pool.
The concept of the 45 minutes lunch comes from the fertile brain of Landlord Kim Fletcher, the man who was born in a pub, and hasn’t left one since. The Wednesday offering included home made soup, mixed salad, or mussels ‘Vinai’ (cooked in their shells with butter, garlic and herbs).
Second course was steak and mushroom pie (cooked in a beer sauce) with crisp french-fries, followed by dessert - a choice of two items, depending upon the chef’s mood!
We set our stopwatches and began the order. Both Madame and I decided on the soup starter, which was a turkey breast broth, which was hot, rich and flavorsome. Great start.
The steak and mushroom pie also arrived hot to the table, and we requested spoons to get the last of the beer sauce out of the bowl. Filling and great taste.
Desserts? I hardly had any room, and the ice cream was more than enough. Madame went the whole hog and had a traditional English pudding with custard.
At 41 minutes we had our bill, and by 45 minutes we were driving off from the car park. It should be pointed out that the specials run all day, but the 45 minute offer is for lunch only.
The other daily specials are:
Monday: starter and main of fillet steak served on a sizzling iron platter with your choice of potatoes and vegetables and desert, for B. 175.
Tuesday: starter plus poached breast of chicken in a white wine sauce served with fried rice, corn on the cob grilled tomatoes and peas, and dessert for B. 175.
Thursday is kebabs, with no starter or dessert as the kebabs are so large. Two long skewers holding a selection of chunks of beef, chicken, pork, kidneys, bacon, and liver, with green peppers, tomatoes, mushrooms and pineapple. Served with fried rice for B. 175.
Friday: starter and deep fried fillets of fish cooked in a beer batter with french-fries and salad and dessert, for B. 165.
Just remember, if you want the special as a 45 minute lunch, go between noon and 2 p.m. All great value lunches. We enjoyed ours and I am sure you will too. Try them.
