The ceremony, held at Diana Inn on Second Road, was presided over by Deputy Mayor Wattana Chantanawaranon.

During the 2006 education year, Pattaya Education Department via the Education Supervision Unit had worked in conjunction with Pattaya School No 3 to run the One School One Hotel project. A total of 34 students from the school’s secondary classes 1-3 took part.

Certificates were presented to all those who had completed the syllabus, and Sopin distributed two scholarships worth 10,000 baht each to two students who intended continuing their hotel studies at Banglamung Vocational College. A special award went to the students who ended the course with the highest grades.

An education agreement was signed during the ceremony between School No 3, represented by school director Mrs Chanyarat Kanchanabut, and the Diana Group.

Following the ceremonies, the students presented flowers to the Diana Group staff members who had acted as their tutors during the course, which had lasted a total of 120 hours and been led by Sopin.

Sopin addressed the students, saying that the hotel business is hard work but satisfying. There are a great many hotels in Pattaya, and the number is increasing, but many of them lack good personnel. Training for this industry therefore offers the opportunity of a rewarding career and the chance to help Pattaya’s image as an international tourist destination.

The two students who were presented with scholarships to study hotel keeping at Banglamung Vocational College will also work with the Diana Group over a three-year period, dividing their time between theory and on-the-job learning.

Miss Wannapa Wannasri, head of the Educational Information Department, coordinated the project.

Leader of the staff instructors was Phimpa Sukhasem of the Diana Garden Resort food and beverage department, who said that the students had learned very quickly during the hands-on sessions.

On Thursday 8th March the PILC Welfare Committee visited Khao Bi Sri School in Plutaluang near Ban Chang for the opening of their renovated housing building.

The school has a student population of around 350 including about 40 students with disabilities. The disabilities range from Autism, Down syndrome, brain damage (caused by high uncontrolled fever or alcoholic mother) and physical handicaps. Khao Bai Sri has been catering for children with disabilities since 2000, the school itself originally opened in 1973.

Fans are needed to help cool the rooms during this hot season.

Khao Bai Sri School comes under local education office for Chonburi region 3 and is one of the few schools that will admit children with disabilities in the area. For this reason they have students attending from all surrounding areas from Pattaya to Rayong. Some of the students live too far away to easily travel daily to school. The renovated house is needed to allow five of the children with autism to reside at the school with one of their teachers.

The children with disabilities are integrated with the regular students if possible. Some of them attend regular classes while some are taught in separate classrooms to cater for their difficulties. There are four dedicated rooms for the disabled students allowing them to be taught in small groups. As the range of abilities is very wide it is necessary to have different approaches available. One classroom is for students that are capable of learning to read and write. Two other rooms are for those more restless students who take a lot more skill to teach and the other room contains fitness equipment for physiotherapy use.

After a need for some fan installations were pointed out, the PILC agreed to provide them.

Attending from the PILC welfare committee were Ingrid Cuniliffe, Mari Palino, Rosanne Diamante, Erin Castle and myself (Kathleen Petras). Also in attendance were Khun Bic (who helps us find worthy projects to get involved in) and some teachers, parents and students from the school. We were greeted for the presentation ceremony by the dedicated Ajaan Daeng (Getsara Pooaknang) the director of Khao Bai Sri School. Ajaan Daeng gave a welcoming speech thanking the PILC for the sponsoring of the house renovation and she presented the PILC with a framed certificate.

Mari from the PILC Welfare Committee graciously thanked Ajaan Daeng and expressed the committee’s happiness at being able to help. The presentation was closed by the assembled students singing a lovely thank you song in both English and Thai.

After the ceremony the PILC Welfare Committee along with Ajaan Daeng and some other teachers went over to inspect the renovation. All was found to be clean and comfortable with a need for some fan installations being pointed out. The PILC agreed to provide the fans and were happy with the renovation.

We then had a look at the playground area for which we have previously provided grass. Due to the dry weather that we have been experiencing the grass wasn’t in good condition and it also seems that even with rainfall the grass may not grow well due to being in a high usage area. The committee decided to investigate the possibility of laying another type of surface for the playground. Perhaps something that would provide protection for the children and would last better than grass.
The committee then departed from the school after a happy visit.

The children gather for the presentation.

The presentation was closed by the assembled students singing a lovely thank you song in both English and Thai.
