Regent’s students raise the roof with Bugsy Malone

Michael Thomas
Splat! Splosh! That was the sound of custard pies flying across the stage in the production by Regent’s School of the smash-hit musical Bugsy Malone, performed recently in the Globe Theatre.

Lieutenant O’Dreary (Kris Karkov) finds a clue for his boss, Captain Smolsky (Ralf Siegrist).
Based on the popular movie of the same name, the show featured a cast of forty Lower Secondary students.
The action, set in the crime-ridden Chicago of the late 1920’s, focused on the growing romance between a streetwise hoodlum (Bugsy Malone) and an ambitious cabaret singer (Blousey Brown) played against the background of the rivalry between Fat Sam Stacetto’s mob of ‘dumb bums’ and the stylish calm of Dandy Dan gang. In the end, no one was the winner as everyone was splurged by everyone else!
There were some excellent performances, including those of Alex MacDonald as Bugsy and Patricia Oon as Blousey, whose dream is to find fame in Hollywood. They were matched by Chris Haeberli as Fat Sam and Grant McMurray as the dapper Sam who is certain that ‘Sing Sing aint my style’. Urassaya Sperbund sang beautifully as Tallulah in the opening to the second half, as did John Petras as the lonely Fizzy in his song Tomorrow - and Ralf Siegrist, as Cagey Joe, in the rousing You’ve got to have It! Plenty of laughs were also to be had in the hilarious song and dance, Bad Guys, performed by Fat Sam’s gang and from Ralf Siegrist and Kris Karlov as the dopey detectives Smolsky and O’Dreary.
The orchestra, led by the Regent’s musical director, Mr Ian Alexander, provided the perfect accompaniment to the show which ended with the final rousing chorus of You Give a Little Love… and it all comes back to you! On both nights, the packed audience gave the cast and musicians a well-earned ovation. The production was directed by Mike Thomas and Corin James.

Urassaya Sperbund sang beautifully as Tallulah.

John Petra as Fizzy sings ‘Tomorrow’.

Bugsy Malone (Alex MacDonald) and Blousey Brown (Patricia Oon).

Shady (Nina Spence) gets well and truly splurged by Shoulders (Kay McCubbin).

Dandy Dan’s gang wait for their boss.

The finale pie fight!

Fat’s & Sam’s Grand Slam Club Chorus.

Fat Sam’s gang splurge Roxy Robinson.

The ‘Down and Outs’ Chorus.

The cast of Bugsy Malone celebrate a successful performance.

Dusit Pattaya marks World No Tobacco Day

Dusit Resort, Pattaya, led by general manager Chatchawal Supachayanont, organized a smoke-free environment campaign at Photisamphan Pitayakhan School as part of its World No Tobacco Day celebrations. The campaign is part of the hotel’s Green Leaf community outreach program designed to educate the young people of Pattaya about environmental issues.

The winners of the slogan-making contest at Photisamphan Pitayakhan School.
The hotel’s Green Leaf committee president, Prawes Akanimart, presided over the parade and campaign. The students of Photisamphan Pitayakhan School were asked to develop a slogan and create a message young people can relate to. The winners were given Green Leaf merchandise. The committee members also arranged an information drive through the school’s billboards and a lecture on the effects of smoking.
“Children nowadays are very intelligent. They know what they want in life and we believe the earlier we inform them of the hazards of smoking, the less probability they will pick up the habit,” Chatchawal Supachayanont said. “We also believe that parents should set the example to their children. Children who see their parents smoking are more than twice as likely to smoke later in life.”
Dusit Resort, Pattaya is aspiring for a 100% non-smoker staff in the hotel as part of its Green Leaf program and recognizes efforts of any staff who successfully quit smoking. This year, the management gave a certificate of appreciation to Saneh Bamrungya, Junior Sous Chef, who quit smoking for over a year now after 32 years of smoking.
Dusit Resort, Pattaya has been awarded three times the Green Leaf certificate with Five Leaves. Green Leaf certificate with Five Leaves is the highest level awarded to a hotel signifying excellence in environmental management.
Green Leaf hotels are awarded certificates for their commitment to environmental conservation by implementing strict in-house programs that fosters environmentally-friendly practices, such as the efficient use of energy and water, water management, recycling, proper waste management, and policies that favour the purchase of products and services from equally committed environmentally-friendly companies.

Jan Olav and Mio Aamlid organized a party on June 3 for their son Matthew to celebrate his ninth birthday, which will take place on August 15. The party was held at the Hard Rock Hotel Pattaya swimming pool. His friends from the Regents School attended, bringing along many birthday presents and participating with great enjoyment in the activities that the hotel arranged, such as water football.
Balloons shaped into cartoons were given out to the children, and a birthday cake in the shape of a guitar was cut to celebrate Matthew’s birthday.
Mio Aamlid said that Matthew’s party was held on June 3 because in August the children are on school holidays and it would be impossible to get everyone together. Matthew will celebrate the actual day with his family in Norway.

Mathew’s friends sing happy birthday to him.
